MLB - The Ultimate Blooper Collection (This Week in Baseball)
Released in DVD by Wea Corp (02 April, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Average review score:

Very Funny
When I first watched this DVD, I didn't expect it to be very funny. But after the first 10 minutes I was surprised. Almost every blooper I found funny. There is also a special feature on the DVD to watch a highlight of bloopers from a certain year. I recommend this DVD to anyone who enjoys baseball.

Ultimate X
Released in DVD by Buena Vista Home Vid (04 February, 2003)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Bruce Hendricks
Starring: Bob Burnquist and Brian Deegan
You could chug a 12-pack of Mountain Dew and it still might not equal the caffeinated rush of this breakneck 40-minute IMAX film that should lose little of its visceral jolt on the smaller screen. This is the real fast and the furious, as worshipped Generation X superstars such as Carey Hart, Tony Hawk, Bucky Lasek, Dave Mirra, and Travis Pastrana careen down city streets or hurtle off ramps on skateboards, street luges, and motocross bikes. Filmed at the 2001 X-Games in Philadelphia, Ultimate X comes complete with a revved-up rock soundtrack, more slow-mo shots than a John Woo film, and pound-back-the-Dramamine POV action. The gravity-defying stunts are not for the faint of heart, which may explain why these fearless athletes have been so wildly embraced by a new generation of thrill-crazed sports fans. This is best appreciated as a ""docu-mercial"" for the X-Games (in its seventh year in 2002) rather than a thoughtful analysis of the zeitgeist (for that, check out the documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys), but one picture of former BMX Gold Medalist Mirra performing his signature backflip is worth a thousand words. --Donald Liebenson

Thrills and Spills!!!
ESPN's Ultimate X is the most entertaining IMAX film that I have seen. It features Thrills galore with amazing stunts done on moto cross vehicles, skateboards, BMX racing bikes, and the Street Luge. The music in the film also provides a rush and ads a lot to the stunts performed. The only thing I didn't understand was in the opening credits, they showed a guy doing stunts on a wakeboard, and I got really excited thinking that they were going to have a segment on wakeboarding. But, as the movie time wound down, there wasn't one. So I was kinda disappointed, but it wasn't really a flaw in the movie. It was very well made. I also didn't like how it was only 40 minutes long because I ached for more. It was a fun film, and I think that it has something for everyone to enjoy. The 75 year old grandma taking tickets at the door kept talking to me about how neat it was. This movie is definitely worth your time. Check it out!!!

Killer movie!
I'm not an avid sports fan but I like taking a look at movies like Ultimate X. Even with the short 39 minute time limit, the movie still manages to make you enjoy it. It's pretty much lots of footage gathered from past X-Games enhanced to fit the huge IMAX screens that it was shown on. Many people don't like watching IMAX movies on video because you lose the greatness of the movie. I will agree but the movie while not being presented in widescreen (it's presented in 1.33:1 fullscreen, not a shock for these IMAX transfers) the image still looks very nice. The audio doesn't suffer much either, because you not only get a Dolby Digitl 5.1 track, you get a wall pounding DTS 5.1 track also. Over the two, I'd pick the DTS because it was more bass filled and more environment enveloping but if you don't want to wake up your neighbors listen to the DD 5.1 because it has almost the same ambience just a slightly softer track. They're both good don't get me wrong but I'd pick the DTS. I didn't get a chance to take a look at the bonus features on the DVD, but from a look at the titles they looked really interesting....

This DVD Rocks!!!
I just got this DVD, it is the coolest thing. I love the movie, and the extras are awesome. There are so many, I can't hardly watch them all. The menus are really cool as well... I have never scene DVD menus like this before. I definetly recommend this DVD for anyone who likes the X-Games or sports in general. These guys (and girls) are amazing atheletes!!! This DVD Rocks!!!

Lord Stanley's Cup - Hockey's Ultimate Prize
Released in DVD by United Services (10 October, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Hockey's coveted Stanley Cup, the most remarkable trophy in sports, is the subject of a glowing tribute on this DVD produced in association with the National Hockey League. The fabled cup is all about tradition, and it is unusual because it is the only major sports trophy to contain all the names of the players on the teams who have won it. The addition of new silver panels engraved with each year's victors is the reason the cup's base has grown larger with the passing of decades. This documentary, hosted by comedian Denis Leary in an uncharacteristically respectful mood, features crackling game footage as well as interviews with players who explain their lifelong quest to skate around an arena victoriously holding the legendary trophy high above their heads. An unusual aspect of winning the cup is that each player on the triumphant team gets to keep the cup for 24 hours during the off-season, and an offbeat segment of the documentary shows how players have taken the cup fishing, have taken it on visits to patients at hospitals, and have even snuggled up and slept with it. A feature on fan craziness during the playoffs features a lighthearted montage showing a multitude of homemade Stanley Cups worn by fans as headgear, and special features on the DVD include concise and lively highlight films focusing on the final games of the 1999 and 2000 Stanley Cup finals. Lord Stanley's Cup is a fitting celebration of this storied trophy. --Robert J. McNamara

Kind of short
Interesting info. but only runs about 50 minutes. Not worth the price of admission I'd say.

A Great DVD for the Collection for all Hockey fans
If you are a hockey fan or even if you wonder why hockey fans are hockey fans, this is a pretty good DVD to add to your collection or to answer your questions. While most of the footage included is of recent vintage, there is enough film of "old time hockey" to keep the long time hockey fans interested. Denis Leary, who hosts the DVD, has the perfect personality to narrate this video, bringing the appropriate mixture of reverence and humor in leading the viewer from the history of the cup to its latest home in New Jersey. During the 50 minutes of the DVD, the producers present some of the greatest performers during the playoffs as well as the Dynasties that have held the cup more times than any other teams. In one of the more interesting segments presents what the cup means to NHL players, past and present, both who have been on Cup-winngin teams, and those who have fell short in this quest. Another very interesting segment, the Cup's Escorts from the Hockey Hall of Fame discuss what happens to the Cup after the final game.

All in all, this was a very good DVD, the bonus footage of games 6 of the 1999 and 2000 finals allow the viewer to relive (or to experience for the first time) these two games that really presented what hockey is all about. It also presents additional footage of some of the greatest players to play for this award.

I would, in a second, recommend this DVD to any hockey fan, either a casual fan or die hard. It's well produced and doesn't leave out too much. The only thing that could be improved is if it were longer.

A tremendous history of hockey's ultimate prize
Fans of hockey don't need to be reminded of how truly special Lord Stanley's Cup really is. For many, winning the Cup is a dream, and the road to realizing that dream is long and arduous. This documentary, hosted by Denis Leary, is a tribute to the history of the Stanley Cup, and the passion and dedication it takes to earn the right to hold the world's most famous trophy above your head.

Over the course of an hour, this film covers the roots of the Cup, the great hockey dynasties of the Habs and the Islanders, some of the best moments along the path to the Cup, some of the most heartbreaking defeats, as well as a chronicle of Cup history in the making.

Included on the disc are a slew of special features, the best being tense highlights from the '99 and 2000 Cup finals.

This is a must for any hockey fan.

NHL - Ultimate Gretzky
Released in DVD by Warner Home Video (27 January, 2004)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Wayne Gretzky

Need more...
Like the other poster said, the video is lacking. There is more time devoted to camera shots in that tropical room than there is to highlights, which, if I recall is the reason this DVD was possible in the first place. I was expecting much more footage, particularly from the Edmonton days. Lots of great stories that could have been delved into, but they weren't even acknowledged.

Why Keifer Sutherland is involved is beyond me. Maybe he's hockey fan, so what? A narrator over the video would have been fine.

Also, you might think 2 discs means lots of footage, but what you have is the wedding fantasy camp, bloopers...the only good things on it are the last game in Canada and the last game, but those are on the first disc.

It seems whoever put this together wanted to show they can package something, and they would rather tell people how great Gretzky was, rather than show it. Case in point: he got 200 points 4 times and they spend about 15 seconds on that fact.

I would recommending purchasing something else as a gift. This collection is not going to satisfy anyone who grew up in those days and wants footage. The SportsCentury on ESPN Classic will give you just as much.

Lacking, but still great
There is something lacking about this DVD. It's hard to put your finger on, but after watching it, I felt slightly unfulfilled by it. It has some great Gretzky footage, but there is no question they have more. If anything, I would say this DVD is short on footage. Don't get me wrong, there is some terrific footage here, some that I had never seen before (I also own the Above and Beyond video), but there no high-lights of brilliant passes to Kurri; Gretzky doing ridiculous stuff on the penalty kill, stuff I was hoping for. They also managed to gloss over like four or five years in Edmonton. They talk about winning the first cup, then they just show a montage of the Oilers hoisting three more. Not a single shot of him in a Blue's Uniform, not much about the King's either. That being said, it is still a great DVD and I highly reccomend you purchase it.

Just bought it today and wow
Finally something comes out for hockey on DVD. This is a good start for any hockey fan out there. Although Wayne did eliminate my leafs in 93' I still think is the greatest player. The shocking part was that Wayne never passed any of his physicals and that proved knowledge of the game might be more than strength.

It has game footage dont worry about that. I was worried it was going to be all commentary and interviews of Wayne. It has footage of a couple of clips in certain games.
My brother loved Gretzky he was his idol and mine was Cujo(Blues, Oilers, and Leafs then I stopped liking him since he left them). I started to watch hockey because of my brother and was cheering for the kings in 93'(but since then I have been a leaf fan so I wish it went the other way).
Oiler Years for sure was Gretzky's best years. They have to give credit to Jarri Kurri, Glen Anderson, Mark Messier, Kevin Lowe, and Grant Fuhr for greta years.

The overal dvd has so much stuff I have not seen it all yet. I watched it for 2 hours and not done yet. I give it a ranking of 9/10 or 5/5. Go Leafs GO and Oilers

Freefall Extreme - Ultimate Skydiving Rush
Released in DVD by Goldhil Media (03 April, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Average review score:

Good for everyone, not just skydivers.
This double featured DVD containing two documentaries that complement each other. It has great replay value; being new to the sport I have seen it several times and tortured my friends and family with it. It is a good introduction to the fastest non motorized sport in the world that walks the viewer through some basic principles on the physics behind skydiving and offers a brief historical view on the sport.
Seasoned skydivers will probably take exception to the strong bias in the documentaries that overemphasize protagonist, Adrian Nicholas, while more prominent figures are ignored. This is the main reason while I cannot rate this DVD above 4 stars.
All in all this is a good bang for the buck and a useful tool fot skydivers to explain the sport to outsiders.

Ultimate Fitness for Martial Arts
Released in DVD by 1 (01 September, 2002)
MPAA Rating:
Average review score:

Excellent quantity, lesser quality
There are an astonishing number of drills and techniques presented here. They are divided into the following categories: Speed, Agility, Timing, Power, Stength, Stamina, Flexibility, Reflexes, Coordination.

However, there are no multi-camera angles or slow motion presentations. Production values are adequate but not even close to state-of-the-art. The narrated descriptions are terse and the accent of the narrator makes it a bit hard to understand. The presentation of the material is quite fast paced. This DVD's value to the beginner is limited in that there are no modifications show for less flexible beginners and no hints on how to work up to the full technique.

With these limitations in mind, this DVD presents a treasure trove of valuable information. With a bit more effort Turtle Press could have achieved near perfection. Sang Kim is an amazing athlete and martial artist--he definately has the "right stuff".

Multidiciplinary Crash Video
Oh well, maybe didn't do a good job of spelling my review title, but it looks okay. Same thing goes for the DVD - it's okay. The cover looks as though there is a lot of mountain bike footage but it is lumped together with the bmx (bmx is cool, don't get me wrong) but altogether, I'd say there is less than 2 minutes of mountain biking in there.

The other diciplines like in-line, surfing, etc. are great. I guess I just wish there was more mountain biking to it. If you do want to get, I would probably suggest getting it used.
