Transworld Skateboarding - Sight Unseen (Video No. 12)
Released in DVD by Redline Entertainment -- Red - (23 October, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: John Cardiel, Henry Sanchez, and Tosh Townend
Transworld Skateboarding takes skateboarding videos to a higher level with its latest feature, Sight Unseen. This 40-minute video makes boarding look less like a hobby or sport, and more like a graceful art. Great music, including catchy raps or a smooth beat, combined with precise and inventive editing gives Sight Unseen a sophistication lacking in most other boarding videos. But even with the extra polish, Transworld keeps it simple by focusing on just five main skaters, John Cardiel, Henry Sanchez, Tosh Townend, Dustin Dollin, and Heath Kirchart, who are at their best (and occasionally their worst). High points include an 18-stair jump by Dollin, tons of air time from Cardiel, bonus footage of Bob Burnquist doing the loop switch on his first try, and plenty of wipeouts. And don't miss the credits section at the end. It features even more offbeat and creative footage. --Neal Marks

Good Video - but don't get sucked in buy the real DVD
Apparently there are two versions of this DVD. The one you get from here distributed by Redline and the "Special Edition" one that has all the extra goodies...

I recommend this video it's one of my favorites, I all ready have the tape version of it, just was hoping to get the DVD version with all the extra bits like:

Improved edit and audio, Behind-the-Scenes footage, skater's and director's commentaries, additional audio and footage, photo archives with commentary, alternate intros, isolated audio score, plus much more

So when you order it make sure you get the "Special Edition" one.

WONDERFUL CAST
if these men were famous movie stars this would have to be the most outstanding cast other than flips "sorry" or es's "menikmati"i would think that this has to be my most favorite tws video now but, hey its your decision not mines!

FANTASTIC, BUT CAREFUL WHICH VERSION U BUY!
One of the best skate video's ever made in my opinion (and ever since watching the Bones Brigade Video Show I've seen most of them), it's worth buying for John Cardiel's mind-blowing part alone!

The version you can buy ...(produced by Redline) whilst being amazing does not have any of the extras that you get if you buy this DVD from a skate shop (or direct from TWS), so it's up to you - 40 minutes from here, or an hour plus (including a guide to the accordian with Matt Hensley, outtakes, photo gallery, chomp trailer and alternate edits) if you get the "real" version....

Drive - My Life in Skateboarding
Released in DVD by Image Entertainment (25 February, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Mike Vallely
If skateboarding has its St. Paul, then that brittle apostle may very well be Mike Vallely. Intense, serious, purposeful to a fault, Vallely took to the (still vaguely disreputable) sport in the early 1980s and found not just a hobby but a ticket to personal expression bordering on the mystic. Instantly embraced by the then-reigning champions of skateboarding (e.g., Lance Mountain), Vallely became legendary for the intuitive brilliance of his movements and stunts. This 55-minute documentary finds him still in great form and inspired by an alternative vision of the world as a miracle of potential: walls, sidewalks, and benches awaiting the brushstroke of his motion. Like Paul, Vallely has loads to say (in an unnervingly repressed voice) wherever he goes; here he picks up converts in Russia, Alaska, and Finland. Vallely may never be an ambassador of cheer, but he has the soul of an artist and prophet. --Tom Keogh

Great, the only word needed
Honestly this is the BEST movie/Dcoumetry I have ever seen. I am a fan of Skateboarding, of Mike Vallely, and of life....So this just hits home, and hard! IF you never watch another movie, watch this first. IT might not change your life but you think about it diffrently. its worht more then you will ever pay for it! "You want to change your life? Start with your perspective!"

Mike V. is Zen Master
This is one of the best sk8 videos I ever. Mike V is truly a deep, thoughtful, talented, dedicated, tough, sk8er. This video drives that home. It follows Mike on a criss-cross journey around the USA and other countries, on a mission to "promote skating as a positive form of creative Self expression".
The skating is great. Mike V does some sick tricks. He has one of the most unique styles around. Nobody does the stuff he does. But he also is one of the most thoughtful and insightful sk8ers around. All of the scenes are voiced over with his thoughts and perceptions about sk8ing and life in general. He takes the time to drive down to Florida to visit a fan with cancer. He drives his own car 1000+ miles to go meet & hang out with a child that may not live long enough to ever sk8 again. And he does it simply because he wanted the kid to have a positive experience about sk8ing and a chance to make one day in his life better.Mike V. is dedicated to his beliefs on a level that few people can even perceive let alone achieve.
The cinematography is gorgeous. The music is good. The sk8ing is rad. Buy this DVD if you like Mike V. Buy this DVD if you like Sk8ing. Buy this DVD if you simply want to watch something that makes you want to deepen your convictions, whatever they may be.

Positive, inspiring, and worth your time.
This is the greatest skateboarding related video I have ever seen (and I've seen a lot). Not so much for the skating that's in it (which is pretty great), but for the message in it. If you are a skater, were a skater, know a skater and you want to understand it better, get this. Now. No excuses. Mike Vallely is a true ambassador of good will for skateboarding, and this video proves it. If you're dissapointed by this video, then you don't love skateboarding. It was far better than I expected and presents a message that the entire skateboarding community needs to hear. And there is some pretty great skating to go along with it.

The Gravity Games - Summer Two (Freestyle Motocross, Thrills and Spills, Bikes, Skateboarding)
Released in DVD by Vidmark/Trimark (03 June, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Gravity Games-Summer Two
This celebration of the 2000 Gravity Games, a collection of extreme sporting events held over nine days in Providence, Rhode Island, features coverage of the various competitions as well as bonus material, including outtakes and music videos. The freestyle motocross competition, in which intrepid riders perform tricks while making jumps on motorcycles, contains footage of Carey Hart breaking new ground by doing a back flip on a motorcycle, a feat that sends the crowd, and his fellow riders, into ecstasy. In the "bike dirt" competition, bicyclists tackle a course made of piles of earth, while in "bike vert" the riders perform stunts while riding up and down a large wooden u-shaped ramp. In the "skateboard vert" finals, some of the best skateboarders in the world rocket up the ramps, defying gravity while performing acrobatic stunts and then somehow skating back down.

Other events on this lengthy (nearly three-hour) DVD include inline skating (in "street" and "vert" styles), downhill skateboarding, wakeboarding (in which participants are towed behind speeding boats), and the ever-popular street luge. If some of the events seem bizarre, the coverage, which was originally shot for NBC, tends to provide a lot of background information as well as profiles of the participants. Lest anyone think this is solely a playground for totally rad dudes, there are some fearless female participants, and some of their exploits are featured in a bonus music video titled "Sick Chicks." --Robert J. McNamara

Tony Hawk's Trick Tips, Vol. 3: Secrets of Skateboarding
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (01 October, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Tony Hawk
Average review score:

Rockin' it oldskool with Tony and Mike V!
Now here's a retro twist on skateboarding instructional videos. A big grab bag of oldskool cool! Street tricks include: ollie grabs, half-cabs, ollie north, late shove-it, ollie finger flip, impossible, boneless, no-comply, pressure flips, street plants, acid drops, and bomb drops. Seeing these tricks again, expecially on a modern-day skate video, makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. I grew up on this stuff! The take home message: If it's fun, even if it's old, go for it!!!

The section with Bucky Lasek is a natural progression from the mini ramp skating we saw in the first two videos. This time the guys are out on a true vert ramp. Vert tricks include: dropping in, frontside airs, backside airs, air to fakie, fakie ollie, half-cab, rock to fakie, rock n' roll, inverts, and frontside tailslides.

Extras include: a lunch break with Tony (watch him scarf 6 hotdogs on a stick hehe), a parking lot session with Mike V, and the game of S-K-A-T-E pitting Tony vs. Bucky on the vert ramp. I had fun watching this DVD. I hope they put out at least one more, perhaps one that would focus on some advanced vert tricks like backside and frontside 540's, varials, flips, and maybe even 900's? Wuhahhahahhaha!

Pretty good.... a lot of kids in it..
Video was good and there were a bunch of kids in the dvd that were learning to skate. Not a lot of crazy tricks in the video but teaches basics....

The dvd was great
I bought this dvd for my cousin who wanted to learn how to skateboard and it was a really great dvd. The instructions were clear and by the next day she was getting the hang of things perfectly. I highly recommend this to people who really want to learn how to skateboard.

Awesome Video
This video is awesome stuff. I got it because of the help it gave a friend of mine. I have to say that this DVD is by far the best out there. If you want to learn the basics for boarding then this is the DVD to get.

Tony Hawk's Trick Tips, Vol. 1: Skateboarding Basics
Released in DVD by Redline Entertainment -- Red - (23 October, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Tony Hawk
Skateboarding idol Tony Hawk leads beginners through an introductory course, starting with selecting the right equipment and ending with intermediate tricks. Hawk teaches the basics of several of the most popular styles, including street, vert, and grinds on rails, with help from Kris Markovich and Brian Sumner, two other pro skaters. The 39-minute video starts out with Hawk and his sidekicks demonstrating balance on the board and the correct way to push and turn. Then they move on to the ollie, kickflip, shove- it, heelflip, and 180s, and finally more complicated moves like dropping into the mini-ramp and how to kickturn and rock-to-fakie. For the finale, they teach the correct way to boardslide on a rail. These pros spend about five minutes explaining in detail how to carry out each trick correctly (and incorrectly--all of the pros take some entertaining intentional falls showing how not to do a trick; fortunately, they wear helmets and encourage all skaters to wear them). A helpful popup dialogue box offers information about the subject.

This well-produced video is fun to watch, whether or not you are trying to learn tricks, since it also contains skateboarding humor and the culture of boarder life. It's a great video for beginners, and it will still be useful once you master the basics. It also teaches more advanced tricks that will provide a challenge for quite a long time, since, as Hawk himself says, it takes years to master them. --Neal Marks

Average review score:

Not THAT much help
Though the movie does show step by step how a trick is done its nothing like jsut doing out and practicing yourself. It does not let you know that skateboarding is much about your own style and how YOU compelete a trick. Don't waste the money...just go ask a friend how its done and learn it your own way.

Helpful I suppose
Basically, they show tricks being done slowly and give advice on how to do them correctly. This can be very helpful or totally useless depending on how you use it. It is something that you only watch a couple times and then never watch again.

Excellent
This is an excellent video for beginners (and parents of beginners!). My son is just getting started, after having watched Tony Hawk for many years and playing video games. This video really covers a lot of ground, which parents should also watch. It gives a great start for beginners to learn tricks. Definitely recommended.

Transworld Skateboarding - I.E. (Video No. 11)
Released in DVD by Redline Entertainment -- Red - (22 May, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Mark Appleyard, Diego Bucchieri, and Caine Gayle
This documentary, which profiles several young men whose creative expression consists of doing tricks on skateboards, rises above being a standard skateboard flick, thanks to some very professional photography. The camera often follows skateboarders as they careen through public places, managing to keep pace with the action so risky tricks can be appreciated up close. Common techniques involve hopping a skateboard up onto steps and benches, or better yet, onto steel banisters that run alongside concrete stairways. In tight shots of skaters zipping down the banisters, the split-second timing and perfect balance required to perform such feats is impressive. There's a montage of skaters seen hurting themselves when tricks fail, reinforcing the aspect of danger more effectively than the obligatory warning at the beginning of the film not to try these stunts at home. The need to always find a new challenge is apparent, and there's a brief visit to a garage outfitted with ramps where skateboarders practice new tricks before showing them off on public sidewalks. A running theme of the production is how the young men are constantly being hassled, with security guards always seeming to show up to order them off private property. Depending on your point of view, of course, a skateboard hero can be just an immature nuisance. But this 35-minute film provides a generally positive look at some of the flashiest skateboarding captured on video. --Robert J. McNamara
Average review score:

Great sk8 video on a no frills DVD.
The skating and music are simply awesome. The focus is mainly on street with a little bit of vert in the montage sections. Excellent performances throughout, but Daewon Song and Diego Bucchieri really stand out. Daewon demonstrates his ability to skate roof-gaps and picnic tables in "weird configurations." Diego shows a lot of speed and guts when it comes to stairs and ledges. The encounters with authority figures are equally entertaining and disturbing. An extra special montage of injuries is included for your horrific pleasure.

There are no extras or bonus material, not even a menu. You just load the DVD and it plays from start to finish without chapter breaks; kinda annoying if you want to get to a particular section right away. At least it's not like VHS, where repeated playback will cause diminished video quality, and you'll probably be playing this one a lot! The audio dynamics are a bit muffled. This problem can be compensated (somewhat) by turning up the treble.

Overall, a very magical and hypnotic viewing experience that will leave you reminiscing about those crazy summer days of yore. I highly recommend.

a dvd with nothing special at all, pretty dissapointing
I would have given this video five stars, but this is a horrible dvd. Skating is top notch in this video, but the picture quality is just the same as vhs, which is lame. Plus, you can't even skip to people's parts. There is no bonus footage, no menu, nothing special. This is a great skate flick with great music from people like Built to Spill, The Sea and Cake, and Mr. Dibbs and is definitely worth viewing, but don't get it expecting a lot from it since it is a dvd like I did. Redline Action Sports who put this video on dvd obviously just wanted to cash in on skateboarding's current popularity and didn't really wan't to make a high quality dvd for skateboarders to enjoy.

illustrated example
great video with dyrdek and his tf, caine gayle, the butcher, mark appleyard with short hair, it's great
