BAD GIRLS!!!!
THIS DVD WILL BLOW YOUR MIND AWAY!!! THESE WOMEN ARE THE BEST FEMALE FIGHTERS I HAVE SEEN!!THERE IS NO DIFFRENCE BETWEEN THE WOMEN AND THE MEN BECAUSE THESE WOMEN FIGHT JUST HAS HARD IF NOT HARDER THAN THE MEN AND THAT SIMPLY BECAUSE HAS FEMALE FIGHTERS THEY HAVE SOMETHING TO PROVE TO THE PUBLIC AND THE M.M.A. INDUSTRY..SO WHEN YOU SEE THEM FIGHT THEY ARE EXPLOSIVE!! THE ONLY NEGATIVE THING I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THE DVD IS THAT THE FIGHTS ARE FAST BUT STILL VERY GOOD..

who says women can't fight
Hook N Shoot took a big gamble by having the first ever all women's MMA card in North American history. After watching this DVD, you will have to agree that the gamble paid off big time. 7 fights in all with only one going past the first round. People who say women MMA fighters have no skill will be forced to shut their mouths after watching this event. All 14 women show amazing heart and they show some pretty impressive skills levels too. The main event has Debi Purcell, my favorite female fighter, taking on Chris Van Fleet. An excellent event that would be a shame if missed.

Wing Chun Kung Fu
Released in DVD by Pro-Active Entertain (25 March, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Woo-ping Yuen
Asia's top action actress Michelle Yeoh plays martial-arts legend Yip Wing Chun (the lone female Shaolin Temple student, who created her own style of kung fu) in this farcical action comedy. In their village, Wing Chun and her Auntie Abacus (King Dan Yuen) make a formidable team. Abacus is a shrewd and sharp-tongued businesswoman while Wing Chun (who developed her martial-arts skills to be less attractive to men) is known as a topnotch fighter. When a beautiful widow named Charmy (Catherine Yan) rolls into town and is taken in by the duo, their tofu business booms with customers fighting to catch a glimpse of her. But Charmy also grabs the attention of loutish bandits, who decide they'll steal her for a wife. More of a gender comedy than an accurate historical film (Yeoh doesn't actually perform the fighting style made famous by her character), Wing Chun is a combination of sitcom-style mistaken identity antics and kung fu action sequences. It lightly turns the gender politics of the traditional patriarchal China on their ear, as the female leads are always a step ahead of the men. Yeoh gives somewhat of a straight and stoic performance in this comedy film, which might have been due to a back injury sustained on the set. But it doesn't hamper her from performing impressive stunts, including bouncing up and down on an inch-wide pole like a diving board. And her costars provide plenty of humor to even out the film. --Shannon Gee

Wing Chun Kung Fu
The DVD cover looked good online but it is nothing more than a inkjet printed cover. Poor audio. No structure on topics covered. Nothing more than a home video with the Master and his students demonstrating some aspects of wing chun. Could be better but for now really poor show. For the price I paid for it, simply not worth the money.

big fun (other than the subtitles)
A great martial arts movie. The story line is funny and entertaining, and the fight scenes are well-executed. There's a bit too much wire-fu for my taste, but there's plenty of non-wire stuff that kept me happy. Michelle Yeoh (sigh) is wonderful, and Donnie Yen has great comedic sense, and both have super kung-fu skills.

The only annoyance was the appallingly bad subtitles, though they're sometimes bad enough to be fun in themselves. They're not up to the standard of the rest of the DVD, though, by a long shot. I have the HK version by Modern Audio Ltd., and I suppose that this issue may be specific to their release. That aside, I heartily recommend the movie.

ADCC: Best of ADCC Vol. #3

Tons of talent, not a lot of action
For those of you looking to see the best of the best grapplers from UFC and Pride (Ortiz, Kerr, Belfort, Hughes, Sperry etc) competing in the most prestigious submission grappling tournament in the world, this is the DVD for you. For those people looking for all these great submission experts to be placed in the greatest submission grappling tournament in the world with tons of "action", this probably isn't the DVD for you.

It's important to remember that this is a submission grappling tournament. That means the majority of the matches are going to be spent either stalking, the guard, side mount, or mounted position. If you hate these positions and want something with a faster pace, then this is not the DVD for you.

This DVD IS for:
-People who don't mind when UFC or Pride fights stay in the guard for 5+min (in this case without striking)
-People who understand the very technical aspects of grappling instead of seeing people "Just lying there"
-People who can appreciate ground grappling

This DVD is NOT for:
- People who want tons of action
- People who don't understand submission grappling strategy (position and points)
- People who look for the "ground and pound" seen in UFC and Pride
- People who hate when matches go to the ground

The broad casting quality is decent. They have different camera angles, but is no where close to the quality we're use to in NHB competitions (KOC, UFC, Pride). I give this DVD 3 stars because it gives THE best submission experts in the world, puts them in a tournament and delivers what it says it does. On the other hand, even for someone who studies BJJ with a Gracie, I found a lot of the matches kind of slow myself.

GREAT STUFF!
Historic grappling matches in the richest country on the planet.

This is the ONLY tournament where you get to see the best against each other.

Ultimate Fitness for Martial Arts

Excellent quantity, lesser quality
There are an astonishing number of drills and techniques presented here. They are divided into the following categories: Speed, Agility, Timing, Power, Stength, Stamina, Flexibility, Reflexes, Coordination.

However, there are no multi-camera angles or slow motion presentations. Production values are adequate but not even close to state-of-the-art. The narrated descriptions are terse and the accent of the narrator makes it a bit hard to understand. The presentation of the material is quite fast paced. This DVD's value to the beginner is limited in that there are no modifications show for less flexible beginners and no hints on how to work up to the full technique.

With these limitations in mind, this DVD presents a treasure trove of valuable information. With a bit more effort Turtle Press could have achieved near perfection. Sang Kim is an amazing athlete and martial artist--he definately has the "right stuff".

Capoeira! Brazilian Style Fighting

A Capoeira class but nothing else.
First of all I think what is shown is pretty good stuff, and it shows capoeira in a good way and gives a good feeling of how a Capoeira class is.

BUT, just taping a class isn't quiet enough in my eyes. The Camerawork is just realy bad half of the time you don't even see the whole action. The Camera itself musst have been pretty bad as as soon the action goes faster you just see a blurr.

Also the techniques shown are not commented in any way, nothing to give you maybe a deeper insight. At the end there are also a few 'self defence' moves (sadly mostly from Jui jitsu), they are pretty complex, but no words of what it's important to look to do it right or not injure the partner...

The History arn't realy big, the just give you a very very brief introduction of it.

So like I said, what's on it is quite good if you look over the camerawork, and the feeling of it all is realy quiet good, but well... it's just not enough...

NICE>>>!!!
Excelent DVD overall. Exciting roda, decent techniques,
very energetic capoeira music, nice moves. Even though the camera work isn't so great, the capoeira in it makes up for everything.

dope
the movie is cool but I only so a small peak on it but it was dope, but the camera wasn't so good on keeping the film but the ladies were hotttttt yeah.

Don't buy
The wrapping on this dvd and disc label is printed on a home printer. The DVD did not work on my Sony DVD player, desk computer, or laptop. I would not recommend putting down money for this product.
I was unable to watch the product, however the back label states, "the question of successorship is discussed without bias or prejudice to a logical conclusion based on the facts." Sounds like a biased statement in and of itself.

Great Historical Footage!
I received a copy of this dvd that didn't work either. I contacted the company and they said that they had just started putting this on dvd and were adding it to their list of products, but they had a problem with there distributor, so they
had made some preliminary copies to fill the orders. They have since then fixed the problems. They sent me a replacement (very
quickly) that had been professionally packaged and worked great. The video itself is some great historical footage of a martial arts legend. It's well done and well produced. In my opinion, it's the best documentary on Chojun Miyagi I have ever seen. If you have bought one and it didn't work, call them and they will replace it free of charge. 1-800-299-YAMA

The Cat - Gogen Yamaguchi, 10th Dan
Released in DVD by Pro-Active Entertain (25 March, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Average review score:

Appalling quality
The quality of this DVD is appalling, and virtually unwatchable. Althought I understand that the footage is old, I had no idea that it would be so bad that it makes most amateur videos look like award-winning examples of cinematography!

It is difficult to see the kata being performed clearly, and due to the absence of audio in the clips (the only sound is the narrator and the funeral scene at the end), the breathing cannot be heard.

The video is blurry, dark and visually "noisy". The funeral scene at the end is so dark, it is difficult to see anything at all.

Don't waste your money

Good historical document
Generally, the quality of the picture is very poor. It's understandable, though, because this DVD is a reproduction from an old footage video. However, as a Goju Ryu student, seeing Yamaguchi himself performed Sanchin and Suparinpe kata is already worth the money.

If you are a Goju Ryu student, especially from Yamaguchi style, you may want to have this DVD in your collection. If you are a general practitioner from other style and looking for some references and instruction material, this is not what you are looking for. Morio Higaonna's Kata series is a better instructional aid, but this Yamaguchi DVD is definitely a wonderful historical document.

So it's not High quality,SO WHAT?
This looks to have been put together quite awhile back. If you want High Quality, bring Gogen Yamaguchi back from the dead and do a retake. This footage is very rare and you probably won't find it anyhere else (I haven't). So quit whining and watch it for what it is-- Very rare footage of Grand Master Gogen Yamaguchi. Excellent Historic Footage!

DVD blank, returned to company five weeks ago, not replaced
I ordered the DVD over five weeks ago. I recieved the DVD
and tried to play but it was blank. I called the company and they said to send it to them. They knew a batch of DVD's were blank.
Over five weeks later I have not recieved a replacement, a letter or anything. I was ripped off. I would be happy to recant my statement if the DVD shows up in my mailbox and write a glowing review about it. So maybe this would get the company to send me the replacement DVD or send me a refund check. DO NOT BUY THIS DVD!!!!!

They finally sent me the DVD
They finally sent me the DVD and it is not blank. Please disregard the first statement I made. It did take them three months to replace it, but I did recieve it. The sound quality
is a little rough, but the picture quality is better than most
of the training videos I've seen.

The Power of Uechi Ryu Karate

Don't Buy This!
I ordered this DVD because my daughter takes this type of karate and I wanted a guide to help her learn the routines, which can get complicated. However, the quality of this DVD is COMPLETELY unacceptable -- it's so dark and pixilated in most places that one cannot even see what is happening. It is truly awful, and totally unwatchable. If there was a negative stars rating I would have used that -- I hate to give this even one star. I have written to Amazon and suggested they remove this piece of, well, you know, from their site to avoid disappointing more customers.

Very well pleased!
I just got done watching this DVD and can't understand why someone would give it such a low and negative rating. I don't see any problem with the quality, it's not digital, but so what.
I found it to be well orchestrated and highly informative about the Uechi Ryu style and the history of it's techniqes. It teaches alot about the style and as I said before the quality is fine and completely acceptable.

of historical interest only
i have come across this dvd before in a martial arts webstore. unfortunately there have been no reviews on the product to help me decide whether to purchase it or not. after going through the dvd in a little less than an hour, the only high point of this grainy, black and white dvd is the opportunity to see gichin funakoshi, as well as masatoshi nakayama and other senior karate senseis go through various techniques briefly. it was clearly intended to explain karate to those who do not know what karate is, and not to those who are interested in further instruction. sensei nakayama's dynamic karate, or master funakoshi's karatedo kyohan would be a much more useeful investment. if you already have both and a member of a good dojo, you can pass on this one.
