Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus
Released in DVD by Mpi Home Video (29 January, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Barbara Walters
This video, hosted by Barbara Walters, is based on the work of author John Gray. His bestselling book Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus deals with the premise that men, as Martians, and women, as Venusians, have extremely different ways of viewing coupledom. For this video, ABC News placed an ad in newspapers asking for couples looking to work on their marriages. They received thousands of responses, and from those they chose the six couples who appear in this special. Cameras follow the couples in their daily routines, and we also see them in discussion with each other, detailing the problems of their relationships with remarkable frankness. They don't shy away from discussing chores, intimacy, and the daily grind, and the picture is not always flattering. Next, each of the couples attends a John Gray lecture and workshops. After five more months, each couple is revisited (the entire process takes a total of eight months); all are in healthier, happier relationships.

Part of the intrigue of this video is the voyeuristic glimpse into the couples' lives. But more than that, each couple discusses issues that viewers can relate to. As the audience of the John Gray lecture nods along with his statements, it's hard not to find yourself thinking, "Exactly!" The video does not delve deeply into the philosophy espoused in Gray's book; rather, it shows his ideas in action. This video will benefit those looking for an introduction to the Martian-Venusian theories, and it will also serve well as a companion to the book. --Jenny Brown

Men, don't let your woman ram this down your throats
I work a long day. Is it so much to ask for dinner to be waiting for me? Am I evil just because I like to watch football and knock back a couple of six packs? Don't let your woman force this stuff on you. The author is not a real man - he's obviously been whipped good.

A Mixed Bag According to One Book Group
Our book group felt that there were some interesting points made and the book provided good insights on certain relationship issues with a fresh perspective. The point was well taken that men and women communicate differently about emotional issues. However, the group consensus was that this book did not offer any really helpful answers. It was felt that the writing was over-clarified, too repetitive, and drawn out. It almost seemed that all one had to do was read the sentences in dark print. A shorter version would have been preferred. Many were of the opinion that the book was written for a woman's improvement. The tone was condescending, often slick and arrogant. Some of the solutions Gray offers verge on the chauvinistic: go shopping, call a friend, eat something delicious. Makes one think: HOGWASH! END

Gray captures the essence of male & female relationships
ABC joins in on a John Gray seminar in which couples are seeking help with their marital problems. It takes a very specific look at the very difficult and complicated world of the female and male relationships. He describes how the man and the woman communicate, deal with their problems, release stress, etc. and is able to show how each sex is different. John Gray shows how to accept the opposite sexes ways of dealing with everyday life situations through realizing each others differences. From this video, you will get a very large insight into the way that several couples began with difficulties, and through the advanced understanding of each other were able to work through their problems and make life worth living together.

Not just another Women-In-Prison film...
This video won't win any academy awards but it will forever stand as one of the better classic cult 70's women-in-prison exploitation films. First off, the film is just flat-out fantasy fun, made in a time of American cinema history when gals were all-natural, good lookin', and good sports (nowadays, if you tried to make this film it'd be filled with silicone sisters trying to look like Pamela Anderson). What you get is a couple of American gals in a Filipino prison watched over by none other than the queen of 70's exploitation films Pam Grier (who managed a brief comeback in the 90's thanks to Quentin Tarantino). Eventually the gals cross Grier the wrong way and end up in The Playpen, the prison's torture chamber. Judy Brown, a fair-skinned brunette, ends up getting stripped, suspended, then placed in leather boots mounted on a slab that spreads wide enough to accept the smoldering charcoal from an evil-looking brazier. "This is our version of the hot foot!" Grier gleefully shouts. No lesbianism - too edgy for a 1970's audience - but there's plenty of topless frontal nudity in this and in another scene, where the other American gal, blonde-haired, blue-eyed Roberta Collins, is strapped to a wheel and spun around. Both scenes run about 2 minutes each, just long enough to be memorable and necessary for the plot, but not too long as to be obviously exploitative (at least not by today's standards). Flames from the brazier in Ms. Brown's scene and a strategically placed restraining strap around Ms. Collins' waist when she's on the wheel keep the nudity at an R rating, but its still pretty hot stuff. Eventually the two gals kidnap Grier, bust out of the prison, and escape into the jungle leaving Grier tied spreadeagled to a tree. She's later bumped off by a roving troop of bandits, and the other girls are double-crossed once they get back to civilization. What a great way to end a '70s exploitation film! Strap on your platform shoes, bellbottom jeans, and Foster Grant sunglasses for this piece of '70s low-budget cinema. I'm giving the film 1 star just for having Pam Grier in it and 1 star for each of the 2 torture scenes - Pam Grier just makes them so much fun!

A polished performance by Sofia Moran as "Theresa"
Recently seen this picture a few days ago and was impressed by the credible acting of Philippine actress Sofia Moran who played "Theresa". A very sexy, sultry, and popular actress in her country back in the early '70's. She was not "billed" during the opening credits of the film, but her character was the one I was able to sympathize compared to the other 3 main characters. Her portrayal of a victimized prison inmate and sexually abused by the Matron played by Pam Grier is a worthwhile reason to see this film. Overall, this "B" film is a Classic within its genre and is a fun film to watch with friends on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Nobody escapes from MY prison!!!!!
Get out your riding crop and hot candle wax! Pam Grier is ready to take you to her version of hell (Harlem baby, I came from Harlem). Watch Pammy whip, beat, torture, and [hurt] inmates all the while wishing it was you taking Pam's abuse. What be up wit dat? Sucka if you don't know the sweet, tempting hot babe, then you be lost! Pam is queen of the 70's flicks. Not only that, but she looks better now than every female 70's star. She is a fine wine that improves with age...

If you dig movies with nudity, senseless dialog, bad language, sadism, and violence, then this is the flick for you. Pam runs this whole show. And like I said, if you don't know Pam, you don't know nothing you jive turkey!!!!!

"The classis that made Candy famous"
The world has gone around to many times to keep this one on the shelf. The movie is so funny and a feminist classic about the low life getting together to make it rich life. The movie makes me sick it is so funny.Jane Forth... makes a part as a foot rubber.Jackie,Candy and Holly start a womens liberation group against men....

We're young, we're beautiful, and we're miserable!
Paul Morrisey's Women in Revolt, while a satire of Women's Liberation in the early 1970s, is really an homage to classic movie cinema of the 1930s, 40s, and 60s. In it, Morrisey alludes to the popular "woman's picture" or, "weepies" of those eras by presenting us with the story of three career girls -- a set up that is most reminiscent of How to Marry a Millionare.
Candy, the beautiful and more aloof one of the trio, has her head in the clouds and aspires to become an actress. It is Candy who makes allusions to old time movies and stars by quoting such campy lines such as "I want to live" from Susan Hayward's movie, and the above. Her scene when she auditions for the movie agent is so reminscent of Lana Turner's audition with the agent in Imitation of Life (the set is so similar, right down to the swinging door!)
In real life, Candy Darling was obsessed with old movies and old movie stars. Her mother was a big fan of them and Candy used to entertain her by impersonating Joan Crawford or Garbo and dressing in drag. Candy is also the more convincing woman when compares to Jackie Curtis.
Curtis, a school teacher and a repressed lesbian, is also fighting for women's rights. But she, too, is a character grouneded in cinema. A "working woman" or "career girl," she is single, beautiful, and a survivor. But Jackie's character is annoying: she gets upset at her houseboy for no apparent reasons and is very cruel to him, at one time throwing matches at his naked body. Still, Curtis is a fantastic performer to watch. He is so alive and funny, having starred and written many off broadway plays. It is ineresting to note that the only reason Curtis started dressing in drag was because he wanted to become a star and knew that Andy Warhol was intrigues by transvestites. Holly Woodlawn, however, just knew how to lie.
When he was preparing to shoot Trash, Morrisey says that he cast Holly without even meeting her. Having read a story in a magazine in which Woodlwan described herself as a Warhol Superstar (without officially being one), he was curious and cast the talented Woodlawn. Unlike her perfomance in Trash, which was brilliant and funny, Woodlwan is reduced to a supporting role that leaves her with less screen time. In her memoir, Woodlawn wrote that she felt intimidated by Darling and Curtis who just dominated every scene and thus she handed the movie over to them. This is a shame because I was really impressed by Holly's acting in Trash and in this movie, she plays a kept women who simply screams and has sex with many men.
Overall, Paul Morrisey's Women in Revolt is a gem. If you like old movies and obscure cult films, you might be able to recognize the allusions to old Hollywood in the film. If not, that is okay too because this is really a good movie. It is funny, interesting, and good.
My only regret is that Image Video does not issue a commentary for this film. There are so many stories on the making of and background of this movie. I would love to have insight into the actress' private life. Someone at Image should hurry up and get Holly Woodlawn (the only surving actress of the trio) and Paul Morrisey's commentary on this important film! The same should be done with Trash because all three of the main characters are still alive.
Still, a good movie to add to your cult collection.

Surprisingly good!
This was surprisingly good. I had heard about this film for many years, but finally decided to get it now that I own a DVD player.Any film that can keep my interest for more than five minutes (unlike "Star Wars") is a decent film, and this movie got more and more interesting as it went. The print on this DVD is good, Marty Kove is another reason to get this (full frontal nudity), and the final scene in the movie is classic. Get it.

Wrestling Women USA
Released in DVD by Image Entertainment (18 December, 2001)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director: Robert C. Dertano
Average review score:

boring stuff
This dvd contains a lot of old black & white wrestling stuff but it is not interesting at all. It contains a small black & white movie which is about a female wrestler and also a long boring catfight with very bad sound and picture. If you love womens wrestling and catfighting do not buy this movie.

Punishers Of The Ring
Womens wrestling as it used to be:women who sat on your face or
squeezed your head between their thighs till you you were barely conscious, and did not feel sorry for you. This DVD is brimming with the head scissors and face sitting you loved to watch. Women, especially, will enjoy this retrospective, watching their own kind laying on their sides, crushing heads between their powerful legs, or staring down at their oppponents eyes, the only part of their faces visible, as their bottoms smother the consciousness from them.

Samson Vs. Vampire Women

MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)

Samson or Santo the Wrestling Hero
Samson vs. the Vampire Women is about Samson/Santo, a wrestling hero who fights evil. In this episode, Santo protects a woman from a group of vampires that want to mate her with the devil and the "mistress" uses hypnosis to disguise how ugly the vampire women really are. Santo is a batman like character with his own hideout and a wrestling mask to hide his identity.

If you like wrestling there are plenty of wrestling scenes.

I purchased "Samson vs. the Vampire Women" and "Sampson in the Wax Museum" out of the cheapie-bin based on their title. I had never heard of these movies before and decided to take a chance based on the cover (not always a good move) and on the short write-ups.

Roger Corman And His Babe Army Are Here!
Alright, this movie started out as a straight-forward sci-fi epic about the first ship on venus. Filmed in eastern europe (I've heard it was made in hungary, poland, czechaslovachia, and / or russia; take your pick) in 1963 or so, Roger Corman got a hold of it, brought it to america, and "fixed" the film for american audiences. Some "dull" scenes were removed and scenes with Faith Demergue (floating in a spacestation) and Basil Rathbone (at a moonbase) were added. Both performers seem as bored as they are boring. This "new" movie was called VOYAGE TO THE PREHISTORIC PLANET. Next, in about 1967, Corman removed the Demergue / Rathbone scenes, turned over the camera to Derek Thomas (aka: a young Peter Bogdanovich), and inserted Mamie Van Doran and a host of scantilly-clad uber babes. Thus, the confoundingly confusing mess, VOYAGE TO THE PLANET OF PREHISTORIC WOMEN was born! Instead of a venusian adventure, it's a playboy bunny sunbathing contest, with a few astronauts and a robot running around! Unfortunately, there's a load of unnecessary narration in this one that's only slightly less painful than swallowing a porcupine. I'm not really complaining. I mean, I enjoy this type of hyper-schlock. If you like babes in seashell bras (and who doesn't), then this one's for you...

Women In Film
Released in DVD by Lions Gate Home Ente (06 August, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Bruce Wagner
Average review score:

Odd...interesting...hard to explain
Ok you've got 3 women. That's it. The flick alternates between each of them and the camera in a series of monologues that are like diary entries...sort of.
There's a Producer (beverly)whose entries are headed to a book publisher. A massage therapist (Portia) who believes she can steal energy from her Hollywood clients, whose entries are part of a book there is no publisher for. And a casting director whose entries are a combination of letters to her newborn blind son and letters to Holly Hunter (her son's godmother).
The thing is that there is a lot of movie references and it's more of an art movie than a movie with a plot. There is no interaction between the three or between them and anyone else that is seen.
However, a few times in the film you find that they are connected to each other in obscure ways. For instance, Portia sets out to seduce a man, who turns out to be the husband of the casting director. And there is a twisted connection of all three of them with a psychiatrist.
It's a flick that is interesting for the first 30 mins. At an hour, you notice the clock and realize there is about 45 minutes more of this that you will have to sit through. Then at an hour and 15, you find yourself reluctant to turn it off, just because you need closure with these women and with this bizarre sequence of events.
It's not terrible...the three women starring in this flick make that impossible. But there are just some things you never really need to see (like Portia on the toilet).
I say 3 stars, only because if you are in the mood for something like this flick, you might really enjoy it. But if you're not prepared or in the mood, it would be very easy to become bored or fall asleep.

Women Who Kick Butt

MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)

Not as bad as I feared, not as good as I hoped...
When I saw this DVD boxed set, I got the sneaking suspicion that a production company was simply trying to unload some excess inventory. But I decided to get it, because I love female action heroes, and it was a pretty good deal- ten movies for [money]. Well the results, as it turned out, were somewhat uneven. There are some good ones (Sister Street Fighter in particular is loaded with great action scenes) and some that were simply awful (Street Angels had very little action and must have had a budget of about [money]), while others had their own merits (TNT Jackson is simply hilarious, a blaxploitation kung fu movie in which the fighters don't even come close to hitting each other!). All in all, the movies have their moments, but if you're into badass action movies with female leads, then I suggest going the Hong Kong "bullets and breasts" route, or maybe tracking down some Russ Meyer movies.
