Gravity Games - Winter One (Skiing, Snowboarding, Chills & Spills)
Released in DVD by Vidmark/Trimark (16 October, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Gravity Games
From Mammoth Mountain in California comes a mountain of material from the inaugural Gravity Games, the hippest competition ever to hurtle downhill. This DVD, with a running time of more than 200 minutes, features elaborate coverage of events including Big Air, Superpipe, Boardercross, and Freestyle Snowboarding. Shot by a number of video and film cameras, the action footage is often stunning, and some high mountain panoramas that frame the competition scenes are gorgeous enough to look at home in a National Geographic nature documentary. Billed as a "winter lifestyle music and adrenaline sports festival," the two-week event attracted the most talented practitioners of what the narration calls "adrenaline sports." The creative presentation of the action suits the frenetic pace of the downhill events, and a soundtrack of rock and rap accompanies shots of snowboarders performing tricks high in the air.

Very brief profiles of the exuberant young athletes provide perspective on what sort of person would go rocketing down cliffs on a snowboard. "The feeling of fear turns me on," says one female high mountain snowboarder. "I don't feel any more happy than when I'm laying it on the line." This is a visually arresting and highly entertaining look at snowy sports that seem designed for a video extravaganza. In addition to the coverage of competition, a selection on the DVD aptly titled "Chills/Spills" contains about an hour of rock accompanying reckless stuff on skis and snowmobiles you don't even want to think about doing at home. --Robert J. McNamara

gravity games dvd
I was not impressed with this DVD. For the price, much better ski or snowboard videos can be purchased. The skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling was good, but the editing was terrible. The music was repetitive (the each song was used 3 times in the movie). The DVD was not fluid. It was very hard to follow tricks. The movie switches cameras as many as 4 times for one trick. The camera switches are not well timed either. The interviews were not entertaining either. The only people mentioned in the video were the top 2 or 3 from each competition. Even though this was a Gravity Games coverage, most of the competition was not shown.

Hoffman Bikes Testimony

MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Mat Hoffman

Disappointment.
I've been a Hoffman since the very earliest 90s when I saw a programme called High5 which profiled him. He was doing mad jumps, king of dirt comps, others were doing flat-land etc way before ESPN etc got involved. Those were the days before major corporate interest. It was just cool.

I was looking forward to watching the DVD and seeing more of the same. Perhaps because there are so many xtreme shows on TV now with the X-games etc that this looked very familiar and nothing fresh.

I am not a huge half pipe fan and prefer street - of which there was little. Of the street they did have I hated the death metal "music" - it's so boring, intrusive and predictable to have this sort of junk on the soundtrack, at least surf vids have some decent tunes. I also didn't liked the dodgy images of Christ during that sequence - completely unnecessary and distasteful. And it was filmed at night mainly so it was hard to see what was going on. I would have liked a lot more street stylin.

Some of the stuff went on way too long as well - such as Mat's loop and the 50ft jumps - yeah it's cool, but for 15-20 minutes of the same stuff? Nah.

As I say, if you like half pipes this is good stuff, if you like street this isn't so good. And the soundtrack plain sucks.

I doubt whether I'd watch the DVD again.

What a wasted opportunity
With the arrival of the new 4 strokes and their magnificent sounding engines Duke video could have hit a home run with this DVD, but to my great dismay and frustration they struck out. Duke have yet another northern English sound alike in Jack Burnickle commentating. Not only does Mr Burnickle's droll delivery dampen any sense of excitement his voice is dubbed over the original audio with the resulting muting of the actual race sounds. Why can't Duke use a combination of Nick Harris, Randy Mamola and Dennis Noyes (at least for the American market)?. In addition the seismic shift from two to four strokes is given a scant 90 seconds in the introduction.

Thankfully the visuals are good, otherwise I would have sent the DVD back to Duke.

Shotokan Karate Vol. II

of historical interest only
i have come across this dvd before in a martial arts webstore. unfortunately there have been no reviews on the product to help me decide whether to purchase it or not. after going through the dvd in a little less than an hour, the only high point of this grainy, black and white dvd is the opportunity to see gichin funakoshi, as well as masatoshi nakayama and other senior karate senseis go through various techniques briefly. it was clearly intended to explain karate to those who do not know what karate is, and not to those who are interested in further instruction. sensei nakayama's dynamic karate, or master funakoshi's karatedo kyohan would be a much more useeful investment. if you already have both and a member of a good dojo, you can pass on this one.

Not worth the money
I'm a soccer junkie, and I suppose I did get my fix. But this product did not blow me out of the water, and as such, recieves 2 stars.

1) It's expensive ($30).

2) 2 hours long. For the $ should have gotten a double DVD with at least 3 hours, I figure.

3) Broadcast-quality picture. Not DVD-caliber. Imagine my angst.

4) UK bias in the reporting and time appropriation.

5) Got the 'Highlights' on purpose -- wanted to follow the storylines. If I wanted all the Goals, I would have gotten the 'Goals' DVD.

Be ready for lotsa Spice Boy facetime + goals. That's all this Eurotrash has.

Tao of Skateboarding
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (26 August, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Bam Margera
Average review score:

Tao of Two Stars
This is a Brian Sumner film, produced by the slick heads at 900 films. Insight into why Sumner (spirtually) has talent as a skateboarder, is offered up here. However, this film is advertised as being a Bam and Tom Green kinda thing, not the case. Bam's total time in the show is around two minutes, and Tom's bonus footage equals out to four or five minutes. Half of the video is filled with kid's who can skate, but are not instructor's by any means. The music editing is horrible and leaves you guessing as to what is was that Sumner had just said. He is already hard enough to understand, without the crappy soundtrack mixdown. The cinematography is first rate. There are very intense angles and close-ups on the tricks themselves. Some of the best slo-mo work that is availible, resides on this disc. The detailed camera work and menu of tricks does not save this "film" from the slew of "how to" videos out there.

XPW what happened???
OK I am a big XPW fan and this is a pretty bad video fromthese guys. There's really no great match on this video. And it is wierd that this happened because they put out so great action and this video lacks that. Here's the run down.

'Vicious' Vic Grimes vs. Psichosis. Now how can you put a highflyer like Psichosis up against a 300 pound hardcore wrestler. The match was pretty lame and nothin to shout about.

Konnan vs. Damien Steele [loses Leaves XPW]: this was the second best match on the tape and it wasn't all that great. The winner of this match would get an XPW title shot at the champion at there next show. So some good moves put on by these two!

[King of the Deathmatch Title]: Supreme vs. Steve Rizzono. This was a great match but there was no sound to it, it was lame. There were some good moments in this match but it was not the best. It is the best match on the tape. I can tell you that much.

[XPW TV Title]: Kaos [w/ The Enterprise] vs. Pogo the Clown. This is ok match, the dumbes match on the tape all together but it was a match.

[XPW World Title]: Webb vs. The Sandman. I am a bigg Sandman fan and this match he was a big joke. The worst title defense I think in XPW history. And the ending is so lame I don't even feel like typing it here it is so dumb.

This homevideo was probaby the worst XPW video ever released. If you want to see a great XPW video go see Blown To Hell, Freefall those are XPW titles not this one. Thanx for reading

Best of Sports Bloopers
Released in DVD by Madacy Entertainment (27 February, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Average review score:

useless, not entertaining
stay away...

most of these old clips aren't 'bloopers' at all. there's a really bad music track, that's the only sound, besides occasional sound effects that must have come from a 99 cent cd rom.

NOT Worth the Money
Very disappointing! The footage is ancient and there really are not any good ones in here. When someone thinks about bloopers, you expect to laugh...not much laughable here. A lot of them were actually scary..not funny. Do not buy this....save your money!

Best Of Sports Bloopers
NOT worth it. No commentary or narration. See better bloopers on TV news programs

The Sports Blooper Encyclopedia

This DVD is absolute trash
I would love to meet the idiot who thought up this concept. I want to force him to watch this show. It is nothing short of tedious torture. As a matter of fact, how can Amazon sell this with a straight face. No bloopers, no quality, no comedy of any kind....I mean nothin. Like a very bad home video where NOTHING EVER happens that is remotely funny. Does make a great frisbee.

Not Funny... Old Clips.... Not Bloopers
Terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible ! A collection of old clips that are not only NOT bloopers they are not funny, amazing or special in any way. A lot of repeating the same clips for no apparent reason. I would not even pay 98 cents for this DVD. I was forced to give it one star only because it was a required entry.

411 Vm. Snowboarding Issue 04

MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Marc Frank Montoya

Phat moves, and tricks, but over before you know it...
This is a good documentary on extreme riding. I have seen others with snowboarding, and skiing combined, but this one is far better. It's strictly focused on snowboarding. If you ask me, I have no interest in viewing skiing at all, so being exclusive to snowboarders is something I like. However, due to the length of this feature, the price is practically highway robbery. Your talking about a half an hour feature (and I'm being generous with that), that is filled with more promotional commercials than anything else. The front of the casing boasts a skateboarding bonus, and thats pretty cool. Also, I'm noticing this feature retails for around [price] used as well. Still far too much money for the amount of material you get to view. [price] to [price] is a more reasonable price, and I'm the furthest thing from a cheapskate. I gave this flick 1 star for the length, and price. The footage was great, but there has to be a lot more footage for a hefty [price] price tag.
