Ballin' Outta Control
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (19 March, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
From New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and North Carolina, this follow-up to Ball Above All takes it to the streets to bring home more hard-core footage of rim-grabbing dunks and legerdemain ball-handling and passing. Fast-forward through brief segments hosted by rapper DJ Whoo Kid about "Hoop Honeys," Kobe Bryant, and various product placements to get to the main event: awesome clips from playground contests, invitational tournaments, and prep games. As with Ball Above All, this approximately 45-minute video pulsates to an authentic rap and hip-hop soundtrack (obscenities edited), and there is gratuitous, albeit fleeting, T&A (no nudity). What it lacks in slick packaging and marquee superstars, Ballin' Outta Control more than makes up for in street cred, with footage of local heroes such as Sebastian Telfair and LeBron James, who astound with their Matrix-like moves on the court. --Donald Liebenson

Highlights of the 2001 Masters Tournament

MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Tiger Woods and David Duval

Disappointing
I expected a thrilling summary of at least the final day matches, as you would see them on tv, but the DVD just contains selected scenes with no story nor thrill.
There are no major scene selections available. The only part covered in full detail is the ceremony.

Just a copy of the VHS - Bad quality
I love the Masters, and thought that this DVD version would be a great addition to my collection. I was wrong! I have a very fine in home theater with a front projection system that allows the quality of DVD movies to shine. This DVD is no better than just putting a VHS tape player into the projector. Don't waste your money on the DVD. Hopefully the future will bring quality productions on DVD.

Golf Tournament
I enjoy the Masters series. Love the theme music too. Tiger won!

NHL: All-Access!
Released in DVD by Warner Home Video (27 January, 2004)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
This collection of film segments promises to show the viewer "the game behind the game," and by taking cameras into National Hockey League locker rooms and putting microphones out on the ice, it accomplishes just that. Features include coverage of a milestone, the night goaltender Patrick Roy set the record for career victories, and a segment focusing on ordinary games, as sensitive microphones pick up spirited comments uttered by players, coaches, and officials on the ice and on the bench. NHL veteran Ray Ferraro offers his perspective on how the game is really played, and some bone-crunching film footage punctuates his explanations of how fast the players are skating and how hard they really slam into each other. The camera enters the locker room to show techniques coaches use to motivate players, and officials are seen suiting up and preparing for a game in their dressing room. The officials also provide perspectives on their jobs, and how it has only gotten harder in recent years thanks to intensive coverage of every single NHL game. Wayne Gretzky's final NHL game and a tribute by the fans is chronicled, and after the game the Great One is seen literally hanging up his skates. This is a very entertaining look at aspects of pro hockey that the usual television coverage tends to overlook. --Robert J. McNamara

Where's the good stuff?
"All Access" my @ss.

Where's the cursing? Fighting? Backstabbing? Where's the real NHL? It is falsely represented on this disc.

This disc is simply clips from "Cool Shots" re-edited into a special.

Do not spend your money on this. I repeat, do not.

a nice show of behind the scenes of the NHL
yes this is NHL Cool Shots repackeged but it is a good movie that allows you to see behind the scenes of hockey. i particularly liked the Ron Wilson stuff when he coached the CAPS after all the cAPS are the best team ever so they deserve coverage

A great look at what happens behind the scenes at the NHL.
NHL All Access, hosted by NHL veteran and ESPN analyst Bill Clement, is an entertaining, albeit short, look behind the scenes of the NHL. From on-ice chatter, to a look at the unsung virtues of the referees and linesmen (that is, BEFORE all this obstruction nonsense), All Access affords hockey fans to get a better feel for how the NHL works. It's short length is the only thing recommending against a purchase.

2000 WORLD SERIES VIDEO - NEW YORK YANKEES VS NEW YORK METS
Released in DVD by (01 December, 2000)
MPAA Rating:
Following three world championships in four years, the New York Yankees' dynasty was starting to show a little wear in 2000. Still, the Bronx Bombers managed to stumble into the playoffs and get past the Oakland A's and Seattle Mariners. Meanwhile, the Mets disposed of the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals, leading to the show everyone in New York wanted to see: Yankees vs. Mets in the first subway series since 1956.

This 70-minute video offers over 50 minutes of Series coverage, including pitching duels, base-running blunders, and surprise heroes. Game 2, of course, is best known for the infamous bat-throwing incident between Yankees hurler Roger Clemens and Mets slugger Mike Piazza, which you'll see from several angles (the overhead is the most unusual and most interesting). A bonus is this video's inclusion of something as small (yet significant) as Paul O'Neill's tough 10-pitch walk that began the tying rally in Game 1, and there are interviews with role players such as Luis Sojo and Benny Agbayani as well as stars Derek Jeter (the series MVP) and David Justice. After five hard-fought games, the Yankees had won their fourth championship in five years and carried an emotional Joe Torre off the field. Bernie Williams comments, "It's just amazing the fact that we have been able to do it year after year after year." It might not be so amazing considering the Yankees' $114 million payroll for 2000, but of all baseball's big spenders, the Yankees are far and away the most successful. The dynasty continues. --David Horiuchi

Yankees Rock !!!!
The New York Yankees beat the New York Mets in the first Subway Series since 1956. You see Don Larson & my favorite, Yogi Berra headbutting a umpire from a previous Subway Series. This is a definet for both Yankees & Mets fans.

Yanks Rule the Subway
In the first Subway World Series since 1956, The Yankees show they are N.Y.'s team. Best games 1,2,and 5.

Preserve your memories of the 2000 Subway Series
Of the recent Home Video Champions World Series tapes, this 2000 edition featuring the Subway Series between the Yankees and Mets is far and away the best. There is a little less on the regular season and playoffs than we usually see on these tapes, making room for a historical retrospective on the Subway Series going back to the first Yankees-Giants match up in 1921. What makes this tape so good is that in addition to capturing all the highlights of the five games series, this particular tape takes the time to dissect the key plays, the prime example of which would be Todd Zeile's ball off the top of the fence in left-center. They also make much better use of the interviews with the players and especially of Joe Torre in terms of getting his thoughts on the key moments from a manager's perspective. Consequently, this tape provides some nice insights for true students of the game. I have four tapes in my collection and this is clearly the best of the bunch and the way they should be doing it in the future.

On Any Sunday Revisited
Released in DVD by Monterey Home Video (06 June, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: On Any Sunday Revisited and Steve Mcqueen
After filming a series of successful surfing documentaries, filmmaker Bruce Brown turned his attention to motorcycle racing and shot On Any Sunday, which attracted a wide audience and was nominated for an Academy Award in 1972 as Best Documentary. In this look back at the phenomenon of On Any Sunday, Brown's son Dana interviews racers who appeared in the original movie as well as people who fondly recall watching the film over and over during its theatrical run. The elder Brown, with his trademark understated sense of humor, talks about the eccentric characters who became involved in the film, including movie star and biker Steve McQueen, who helped provide financial backing. Outtakes from the original documentary are shown, including some unused scenes featuring the legendary "helmet-cam," a clumsy device that provided spectacular footage even if the racer wearing it on his head looked ridiculous. Several of the racers profiled in the original film have remained friends with Brown over the years, and scenes at a reunion show that the camaraderie forged on the cycle tracks 30 years ago still survives. Anyone who remembers the thrill of watching On Any Sunday will find this nostalgic return enormously entertaining. --Robert J. McNamara

Beat It !
This horse cannot be beaten to death !

Although not as good as the original, (how could it be ?!), it is a worthy tribute to the riders and stars of On Any Sunday.

Meeting them again after 30 years and seeing how this revolutionary movie of it's time affected their lives is what I wanted to see. (You can see Malcolm Smith in OAS.3).

History in the making before your very own eyes - How can you beat it !

Only if you were there, can you "re"visit
Henderson in Nevada, you missed the point. "RE" is the key word here. What I hoped and expected; the young crazy kids, grown up and now grandfathers as they hash over old times. They're in their 50's and 60's even. They all looked terrific; still good pals, which just goes to prove the sport is for real. Malcom Smith and Jim Rice weren't featured and I was looking forward to seeing them. If you weren't around back in '71 to appreciate the original release, or you didn't ride; you probably won't appreciate this. WE were involved and my husband died since then; so it was like going home. Odom, Bugsy, Dave Aldana, Kenny Roberts, Mert Lawwill, Palmgren, Nixon, Gene Romero; if these names don't sound familiar, don't bother. It's exactly what the title says; "REVISITED"; IF YOU WEREN'T THERE THE FIRST TIME, YOU CAN'T "RE" VISIT anyplace. I did hope to see some Widow Maker in Utah, how many people have made the top since. Teeth clenching "endo's" that would kill most. I'm happy with it; just too short. Death of one rider; sad, but can we say "UNEXPECTED?" I think not, since when you see some of the accidents left out of the original; you should know why.

Teriffic for old timers
If you loved motorcycles in the 50's & 60's, you will enjoy this film. It contains footage not used in On Any Sunday, with interviews with some of the riders featured in On Any Sunday.

Watch the old bikes ride again!

Pride FC - New Blood

MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Average review score:

there are better ones....
this pride was very slow and dull compared to the others. this and the PRIDE GP opening round may have been the slowest events in PRIDE history to take place. the fights are as followed:
1)Heath Herring vs. Willie Peters-nice quick finish and good display of skill
2)Carlos Barreto vs. Tra Telligman-relatively slow match of two fighters never really tryingvery hard to finish the fight
3)Alan Goes vs. Vernon "Tiger" White-ok fight but quite slow to. some action by Alan
4)Carlos Newton vs. Naoki Sano-slick ground kills displayed by newton
5)Akira Shoji vs. John Renken-average fight. renken was quite overmatched
6)Gilbert Yvel vs. Vitor Belfort-nice opening of the fight by vitor then it's stalling to the end. not the kind of fight you would expect from either fighter
7)Igor Vovchanchyn vs. Daijiro Matsui-lot of heart shown by matsui but what did PRIDE have in mind by making this match? Matsui had virtually no chance of winning over Igor. one of the better matches on this event that didn't go too long or too short
8)Ricco Rodriquez vs. Gary Goodridge-quite dissapointing for a main event, even to a real MMA fan. good technical Ground n Pound by Ricco.
this PRIDE had its share of slow matches and quick finishes. wouldn't recommend this over any of ther others but if you want this in your collection, go for it

Ground and Pound returns to haunt us
This show has lots of my favourite fighters but it is not as stellar as RETURN OF THE WARRIORS or BATTLE OF THE RISING SUN but PRIDE FC always puts on a better show than the clowns at your local YMCA could. Newton vs Sani is impressive ... also the Vernon White v Alan Goes match is pretty exciting but there are better PRIDEs you can buy. Even the Gilbert Yvel v Vitor match turns unfortunately dull....ground and pound...BORING!!!!!!!!!! Your money is better spent on either of the two Pride's I mentioned earlier...but thats just what I reckon.

It's all good.
It's brutal, it's bloody, it's the entire program, not just highlights. Ricco Rodriquez vs. Gary Goodridge; Igor Vovchanchyn vs. Daijiro Matsui; Gilbert Yvel vs. Vitor Belfort; Akira Shoji vs. John Renken; Carlos Newton vs. Naoki Sano; Alan Goes vs. Vernon "Tiger" White; Carlos Barreto vs. Tra Telligman; Heath Herring vs. Willie Peters.

Michael Jordan - An American Hero
Released in DVD by Platinum Disc Corportation (01 October, 1999)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Christopher Jacobs
Average review score:

Watch the real deal, get Ultimate Jordan
If you are going to pay the money, get the geniune article. Get footage of MJ doing what he does best in the Ultimate Jordan DVD set. Regarding earlier comments, Michael Jordan inspires people in ways others do not. He is an original human being of astounding athletic ability and admirable work ethic. Sure, firefighters and policemen do risk their lives everyday in service of society, and they should be applauded. Jordan should be applauded for being an inspiration for a generation of lost souls. In a society where drugs and violence are major problems, Michael Jordan's success provides young people with hope of a better future. Just because Michael Jordan makes a fortune for his career pursuits does not detract from his accomplishments. He has inspired a generation of youths to pursue their dreams, and that should be worth something. It is quite cynical to dismiss him because he is a charismatic spokesman for products. That is only one facet of a dynamic man, to crucify him for just that one area is narrow-minded.

spare me your jealousy
So you're saying that Michael Jordan's image was created by marketing? Wake up! Did you watch him play? He was the greatest basketball player ever. He scored at will, was one of the best defenders ever, and commanded respect from any opponent or teammate. Neither the media nor large corporations are capable of marketing a player as the greatest. If that were possible, we'd all think Kobe Bryant or Vince Carter were the greatest, with all the attention they get now. Ask Larry Bird or Magic Johnson if "the marketing business propelled Michael Jordan's image into media mega-stardom...". Larry Bird once said that Michael Jordan was god (after Jordan scored 63 on him in the playoffs). Not that I agree with Bird, but the point is, Michael is a hero because he was simply the greatest. Any non-partial basketball fan is aware of this. But he's also a hero because of the way he became the best. Now that players are going from high school to the NBA, one can respect much more that Michael Jordan was cut from the varsity team his sophomore year. Do you think that happened to Kobe Bryant or Kevin Garnett? They were getting calls from major universities when they were still in junior high. On the contrary, Michael showed us that through a hard work ethic, determination, and a will to win, that man can overcome any obstacle to be the best. No, he wasn't perfect. Who is? He overcame inner conflict and rough spots in his own personal life--and even the murder of his father, to win SIX championships, a feat that is near impossible these days with free agency and the salary cap. That's why Michael Jordan is--and always will be--an American hero.

Open your eyes
I don't understand how someone can think that Michael Jordan's image is a product of commercial marketing. Did you watch him play? His image is the the result of him being the most dominant basketball player in the history of the game. The Nike deals and millions of dollars came later. And no, Michael's ego doesn't outweigh his talents; he was the best. For all we know, he'll always BE the best, especially with the direction the NBA is going right now. Confidence is a deadly weapon in sports, and his confidence on the court was taken as an ego. Sure, he knew he could score at any time on any person, but so did his opponents. And Michael Jordan is an American hero because he overcame obstacles in his life that would cause most poeple to give up, but he rose above them, and the rest is history. He inspires young people around the world to pursue excellence with a hard work ethic, determination, and will to win. Call me old fashioned, but I was expect anyone to save a baby from a burning building if they saw the opportunity; sure it's heroic also, but nevertheless, ANYONE can be that type of hero, not just firefighters and teachers and doctors...helping others in this way is a part of humanity. Michael Jordan became a hero through blood, sweat, and tears, and that's why he's become such a role model for young and old alike.

Extreme Summer
Released in DVD by E-Realbiz.Com (13 June, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
This documentary about extreme athletes challenging dangerous but awesomely beautiful conditions in Hawaii features an offbeat format in which the cameramen are often shown doing their work, so the film itself has a curious "making of" feel to it. Shot with IMAX cameras, the video features awesome footage of "tow in" surfers, intrepid souls who are towed with jet skis onto enormous waves, which they then surf down so that it appears as if they are snowboarding down a mountain. The surfers appear in interviews, with one describing the challenge as "the culmination of everything you've learned in surfing." The massive walls of water look like they really belong in a National Geographic special about extreme weather, and it's a little unsettling to see men challenging these monsters. Much of the footage was shot from helicopters, and even footage of the camera-carrying choppers ducking in and out of the waves is heart-stopping. Other segments on the video feature astonishingly gorgeous IMAX footage of rock climbers tackling towers of stone in Arizona, and again techniques of intrepid cameramen are prominently featured in the production. A concluding segment featuring windsurfers tackling enormous waves in Hawaii concludes a production that is as visually pleasing as it is exciting. --Robert J. McNamara
Average review score:

be aware, this is not the imax movie!
This is not the imax movie. It is just the "making of" of half
of it. Boring...
2/3 of the DVD is just the director talking about the imax camera.

This is NOT the IMAX film!
I was disappointed to find that this is not the actual IMAX film transferred to DVD. Instead, it is a documentary ABOUT the IMAX film. It does indeed show some impressive footage from the original, but it was frustratingly interrupted by interviews with the director and shots of the camera crew. The disc does NOT provide the "sit-back-and-relax" experience of awesome visuals and cool music that I was expecting, as the constant voice-overs and back-and-forth switches between the beach and the studio do become annoying. It seems redundant for the disc to have a "making of" section, as the whole disc is just that. On the bright side, there is some great footage on sports that you don't easily find on DVD (or anywhere else, for that matter). I'd recommend buying it, but caveat emptor!

Not IMAX Original, but Making-Of
This is not the IMAX original of "Extreme", but really a documentary of how they made it. In that respect, it deserves five stars. If you read about IMAX going to Everest ("Into Thin Air", etc.), you get an idea of how much more difficult it is to get large-format films made (200 pound cameras that cost $300,000). BUT, with this film, you also get behind-the-scenes interview snippets with surfers, climbers, and filmers as well as more shots of the waves and such. If you keep that in mind, you will be better off.

Destroying America (Skateboarding Film)
Released in DVD by Redline Entertainment -- Red - (22 May, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Jeremy Klein, Heath Kirchart, and Erik Estrada
This attempt to elevate a skateboard video to an action-adventure film nearly makes MTV's Jackass look like Masterpiece Theater, but that will probably be its greatest appeal. What little plot there is concerns two skateboarders who ride into and over just about everything in their path in a battered van that has miraculously escaped the junkyard. There are some other characters, including two women who seem to have wandered over from the set of a porno film while busting out of their tiny nurse's uniforms, a young Asian woman (played by martial artist Ming Tran) in a schoolgirl's uniform who kicks (and kicks and kicks) the hell out of what she terms a "dirty white guy" who tries to lift up her plaid skirt, and a vengeful cop played by none other than Erik Estrada of CHiPs fame. Skateboarding champion Tony Hawk even turns up to play a drunken pizza delivery guy. As if that's not enough entertainment, the skateboarders drive their malicious white van through a Christmas tree stand (they don't murder Santa, but sure mess up a lot of trees) and a sidewalk cafe (though, in fairness, they were provoked). A cop car gets made into a skateboard ramp, which seems like a huge deal to Estrada's character until the car is later attacked with a pickax, doused with gasoline, set on fire, and blown up. None of this makes much sense, but there's a lot of raucous music, plenty of very nifty skateboard tricks, and enough bizarre visuals to thoroughly entertain those who find themselves in the right frame of mind. Extras on the DVD include a featurette on the film's premiere, where fans celebrated by tossing a lot of stuff at the van and the cops came to cool things off. --Robert J. McNamara
Average review score:

Not a great skate film, but . . .
This isn't a very good skate movie. The pacing of the non-skate stuff is tedious and cumbersome and not all that entertaining. The scenes with the nurses, for example, are incredibly boring, as the novelty of volleyball-sized twins wears off almost instantly. The destruction of the police car at the end is boring too, at least until they dump it off the building. Tony Hawk's segment left me thinking "huh?" The references to Hawk's Gleaming the Cube role is funny for a second, but it goes on for minutes.

The saving graces are the skate segments, Ming Tran's segments, Gayblader, and the behind the scenes video (especially all the Ming Tran segments). If you can pick this up cheap, it's worth it for that.

tHE EFFECT
i THOUGHT IT WAS A GREAT MOVIE BECASUE OF THE FACT THAT WAS ALOT LIKE CKY OR JACKASS, WITH HEATH KIRCHART AND JERMEY KLEIN SKATING WAS A BONUS. bUT I THOUGHT THE BEST PART WAS WITH BAM IN IT , I WOULD TELL YOU WHAT IT IS BUT IT IS MORE FUNNYER SEEING THE MOVIE .

Jeremy Klein and Heath Kirchart...what more do you want?
At first I hated this video, but after a long hiatus I watched it again and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was having a Jackass marathon and this fit in perfectly (along with the Big Brother videos and cky videos). Anywho...yeah there's not much skateboarding but it has Jeremy Klein and Heath wrecking havoc in a van...and Mark Gonzales makes an appearnce. The music for the tour footage is by Cher and surprisingly it fits well. You also got Willy going potty behind some bushes which was funny. Jeremy Klein dressed as a dorky rollerblader annoying Dan Rogers was great. The little skating in it was good along with good music. If you like Jackass, I recommed this, if you want to see amazing skateboarding skip this and get p.j. ladd's wonderful horrible life and tiltmode army's man down.

And 1 Mixtape, Vol. 6 (Street Basketball)
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (16 September, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Average review score:

AND 1 Vol 6
I rated this a 4 because it is "And 1" afterall. But i was not too impressed. Dont get me wrong there was some sick moves, and tight beats, but it was to short and alls they showed was ali and sauce. What im sayin is, u put everyone else in the video and it makes it 20-30 minutes longer. Make me wait another month, and put some more effort in it. but what the hell, It is "And 1" so you gotsta pick it up.

Going Back To The Good...But Going A Little Short
After the disappointment that was Volume 5, AND1, purveyors of the nasty, borderline-illegal, ankle-breaking streetball moves, went back to what they were best at: true streetball footage against people actually trying to defend against being put to shame.
Longtime streetball fanatics will love the new addition of an old favorite: Alimoe a.k.a. the Black Widow, a Harlem native with an already established rep at legendary Rucker Park (you can catch him in the Entertainer's Basketball Classic Season 1 DVD). Ali-baba is the consumnate streetballer: great handles and tricks, solid defense, a jumpshot and enough ups to make highlights--Hot Sauce, 50 and Skip all rolled into one. Jaws will drop for newer fans of the Mixtape series as Alimoe takes his smooth-but-tough NYC style around the country. Nearly a third of the DVD and the first 10 minutes are pure Black Widow.
Noticeably absent are finishers Main Event and 50, whose appear sparingly with Vol. 5 debutante High Octane throwing a majority of the sick oops down. Hot Sauce, Shane, Headache, AO and Sik Wit It put up most of the highlights, but the producers give a pretty big chunk of the video to local ballers holding their own.
Don't worry about hitting the rewind button to watch someone's ankle's break again; there is no shortage of instant replays, even up to five or six times per play. However, they get a little too creative with the video work sometimes, making some plays difficult to enjoy.
Now for the money...you wanna know about the tricks. There's a fair share of old familiars--the ball through the opponent's legs, the ball on the head, the big cross--but Vol. 6 does bring some new hash to the pipe. You'll see new spins on old tricks, and sick new variations to the good ol' spin move, courtesy of Alimoe.
Watch the video all the way through for the "Hidden Track" featuring grainy tournament to high school to college footage of NBA stars Shawn "The Matrix" Marion, Stephon "Starbury" Marbury" and Rafer "Skip To My Lou" Alston, as well as Alimoe. The "Sauce's Crosses" section is merely a short, short, short montage of maybe one or two broken ankles, and a ton of just big crossovers. The "Garage Battles" is a fair warning to AND1 wannabes to NOT, I repeat, NOT send in tapes of yourself when your skill level is AND None.
Way too short of a video...it seems as though too much emphasis was placed on interviewing players and fans, wasting five to 10 precious minutes that could've been streetball.
Those who decided not to buy the ESPN Streetball DVD and instead wait for this to come out may want to go back and buy that package. It'll be a nice complement to this DVD and has tons of stuff that never even shows up in Vol. 6.
A cool, old school return to the grainy, tournament footage-style of mixtapes that put AND1 on the map. If only they played it 10 minutes more.

This DVD was CRAZZZZY!!!!!!!!!!!!
I must say that this dvd was off da hook. I guess it could have been a tiny bit longer, but the dunks were tite, Sauces Crosses was cool, and the mess ups were hilarious!!!!!
