Hallowed Ground
Released in DVD by Red Distribution, In (24 September, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: B Burnquist and S Berra
Average review score:

Hallowed Ground has the same spirit as Chin
Hallowed Ground isn't so much about who can do the biggest, longest, or most technical trick. It's certainly chock full of amazing technical skating, but the soul of this movie is in the joy that skating can bring, not who does it the best. Though not as goofy or fun, it has the same sort of overall feel as Chin. Friends skating together and loving it for it's purity, not for what sort of video game contracts it may bring.

The footage is beautifully shot, the soundtrack well matched to the skating. I had personally never seen some of the spots in Brazil, and what Hurley video would be complete without a huge session on Burnquist's famous ramp with the over-vert bowl section? Bob and Lincoln soar while Ben Harper is playing, the skating reminiscent of Hosoi. Black and white plus glorious color footage are both included throughout the movie.

Old-schoolers will be pleased with the homage paid to vintage style during Mike Vallely's part, among others. There aren't too many professional skaters around that can session a 10' x 10' concrete square. Mike does it with style and flair, and reminds us what skateboarding is all about. Skaters of the more technical breed won't be disappointed either. Plenty of big, precision skating can be found as well.

One of the great skate videos, or DVDs as the case is now, thankfully, Hallowed Ground shouldn't be missed. If you only pick up one modern skate video, make it Menikamati. If you pick up two, add Hallowed Ground to your library.

Hallowed Ground
Hallowed Ground is a very good skate film. It has footage of Mike Valley, Bob Burnquist and many others. It has a good combination of street, and vert as well as footage from South America. The DVD version is a must have.

King Of The Cage - Cage Wars
Released in DVD by Brentwood Home Video (16 January, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: King of the Cage and Don Wilson

Good clean fun
This fifth installment of the KotC series of mixed martial arts action continues to improve. Unfortunately, this time, there are no guest celebrity commentators, leaving Don Wilson and Eddie Bravo to their own devices, not that that's necessarily a bad thing. There are about twelve fights, including a fascinating bout between Dean Lister and John Jensen where not a single strike is thrown. Instead, the fight is a fast and technical bout where the athletes trade submission attempts. Other great fights include Jerry Bohlander's return to MMA in a bloody battle against Brian Foster, and Chris Brennan's title defense against Joe Hurley, a young Lion's Den fighter. Good action overall, with plenty of knockouts, tapouts, and hard-won decisions.

KOTC puts on the BEST Mixed Martial Arts shows in the US!
King of the Cage is the best American Mixed Martial Arts show out there! The level of their fighter and the way they present the show is far above the UFC. And now that the King of the Cage has teamed up with the PRIDE orginazation, there is no telling what might be next on American soil. Could it be Sakuraba vs. Tito Ortiz. I guess we will have to wait and see!

The only problem I have with the DVD version is that you only get 10 of the 12 fight. I dont know why they could not have added them on as well. I have all the other King of the Cage events on VHS, and all the fights are included.

NFL - 50 Greatest Quarterbacks
Released in DVD by United Services (30 October, 2001)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
"The quality of a great quarterback is being able to deliver when you have to," says Bart Starr in this rich and rewarding documentary about professional football's field generals. Starr, a Hall of Fame quarterback for the Green Bay Packers during the Lombardi years, ought to know, of course. The legend ranks high on 50 Greatest Quarterbacks's list of most accomplished QBs, guys who know how to get the job done when the stakes are high and the pressure is unbearable. Starr's in great company. The listings here include not only such obvious giants as Joe Montana, Joe Namath, and Johnny Unitas, but illuminate the overlooked careers of Frank Ryan of the Browns, John Brodie of the 49ers, and Ken Stabler of the Raiders, among others. Still, the high points of this video are extended chapters on Namath, who legitimized the AFL for many skeptics, and Montana, whose confidence made greatness look all too easy. --Tom Keogh

karl...
Are you an idiot karl? You can tell you are from Canada because you dont know anything about the NFL. I think its surprising that Dan Marino isn't ranked number 1. He holds every meaningful passing record. Just because he did not win a superbowl does not make terry bradshaw a better quarterback. I love Terry Bradshaw but he could not have won a superbowl without the players around him. Thier defense, Swann and Stallworth. Dan Marino did not have that. If Dan was playing on the Dolphins team today, believe me, he would have a ring.

great video shots but questionable ratings
I loved the game footage on this DVD. However, I had a problem with some of the QB ratings. I wholeheartedly agree with Joe Montana being the undisputed number 1 quarterback. Where I disagree with the ratings is when they rank non-Superbowl winning QBs such as Dan Marino and Jim Kelly so high. I simply can't believe Dan Marino is ranked ahead of Terry Bradshaw! This is pure foolishness. Otherwise, a nice NFL films product.

Pride FC - Cold Fury 2
Released in DVD by Bci Eclipse Llc (22 October, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: A Otsuka and W Silva
Average review score:

Good, technical exhibition
Cold Fury 2 is a must buy for MMA fans but not for the casual fight fan. There's hardly any fireworks in this DVD. Silva fans might also be a little disappointed, as he fought an overmatched Otsuka who seemed more concerned on surviving than winning. Semmy Schilt's fight was probably the most brutal of the fights. The fights of Ninja Rua and Alan Goes are two examples of world class mixed martial arts,, with the Rua fight involving more strikes and the Goes fight showing more grappling skills. On a funny note, the Rampage Jackson fight against Matsui was an odd one. Listen to the commentators describe Jackson as "relaxed," but any honest observer will not be able to deny that Jackson was high on something coming in to the ring. See it for yourself.

Fight listing for Pride 18 - Cold Fury 2
The fights may be in a different order on the DVD.
Putting Otsuka up against Silva is just disgusting.. Otsuka didn't have a chance

Vanderlei Silva vs Alexander Otsuka
Semmy Schilt vs Yoshihiro Takayama
Jeremy Horn vs Akira Shoji
Igor Vovchanchyn vs Valentijn Overeem
Yoshihisa Yamamoto vs Jan Nortje
Murilo Ninjya vs Alex Andrade
Alex Steibling vs Allan Goes
Daijiro Matsui vs Quinton Jackson

Pride FC 6 - From the Yokohama Arena
Released in DVD by Brentwood Communications (16 October, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Pride Fc, M Kerr, and N Takada
Average review score:

Another good show from Pride.
Pride 6 was held on July 4, 1999 at the Yokohama Arena.

The first fight is between Lumax Cup, Shooto, Super Brawl 12 and Pride veteran Eagan Inoue and in his MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) debut pro wrestler from the Battlarts Carl Malenko. A solid match but it does get dull at times.

The second fight is between Pride veteran Daijiro Matsui and Extreme fighting, Japan Vale Tudo and UFC 17 veteran Carlos Newton. Excellent fight with little or any stalling.

The third fight is between Universal Vale Tudo 6 tournament winner, International Vale Tudo and UFC 15 veteran Carlos Barreto holds wins over Mikhail Illoukhine, Daniel Bobish , Paul Varelans and Kevin Randleman against IFC 1 tournament winner, WVC 5 tournament winner and AFC 3 tournament winner Igor Vovchanchyn. This was an interesting fight but dull.

The fourth fight is between Lumax Cup and Pride veteran Akira Shoji and UFC veteran & former King of Pancrase Guy Mezger. Good fight with a controversial ending.

The fifth fight is between UFC 8 finalist and IVC 1 tournament winner Gary Goodridge and in his MMA debut Naoya Ogawa. Another good fight with a controversial ending.

The sixth fight is between UFC Japan tournament winner and Pride veteran Kazushi Sakuraba and Universal Vale Tudo, International Vale Tudo, Ultimate Brazil and Pancrase veteran Ebenezer Fontes Braga. Great fight with a excellent ending.

The main event is between WVC 3 tournament winner, UFC 14 & 15 tournament winner and Pride veteran Mark Kerr and Pride veteran Nobuhiko Takada. Good fight but it is not main event quality.

I recommand this for anyone who likes MMA.

The best NHB promotion in the world!
Matches are: Takada vs Mark Kerr
Carl Melenko vs Egan Inoue,
Igor Vovchanchyn vs Carlos Barreto,
Akira Shoji vs Guy Metzer,
Nobuaki Kakuda vs Hiroki Kurosawa,
Daijiro Matsui vs Carlos Newton,
Sakuraba vs Ebenzer Braga,
Naoya Ogawa vs Gary Goodridge

Soccer Secrets Complete Boxed Set
I purchased the set for help with coaching a U14 team. I was somewhat disappointed in the actual technical content of DVDs. This is definetly for beginner coaches, even the advance tape was on the simplistic side. I purchased the Coerver and Vogelsinger series prior to buying this collection and those two are hard acts to follow. If you want some mildly inspirational and simplistic technical instruction buy Soccer Secrets. But I feel there are much better options out there Coerver/Vogelsinger). Good for the girls not so good for coaches!

No where as good as 2002 edition

No Heidi, Elsa, or Yamila in this edition. Aside from Molly Sims and Daniela it is comprized entirely of new faces, who for the most part do nothing for me.

The quality of the footage is as good as it gets and if you're looking for some thing new and fresh, then this product may entirely be your forte.

Great locations and beautiful models.

The Story of Golf
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (30 May, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Tiger Woods
Veteran sportscaster Jim McKay narrates this three-part series on the history of golf and takes us on a journey from its humble beginnings to the multinational, multimillion-dollar franchise that it is today.

Volume 1, The Early Years, examines golf's mysterious and almost mythical beginnings, with commentary and speculation from some of today's top historians of the sport. Beginning with early stick-and-ball games, the episode delves into the history of the equipment and early evolution of the game. We are given great insight into the types of clubs and balls used and hear the stories of long-ago golf legends such as Tom Morris, Charles Macdonald, and Harry Vardon, the sport's first superstar spokesman and commercial endorser.

The second chapter, Golf Comes of Age, introduces us to the growth of the game in America. The beginning of serious tournament play, along with ever-changing technology, created more of an audience for the sport. Golf stars such as Sam Snead and Ben Hogan revitalized the game, and the overwhelming support of women's participation was only pushed forward with the founding of the Ladies Professional Golf Association and the rise of Babe Zaharias.

The Modern Game is the third and final installment of the series, and it follows golf into the television age, right up through the triumphs of Tiger Woods. With Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus taking the reigns, golf evolved from a pastime into an industry. Golfers became course designers, and the sport found its biggest audience ever.

The Story of Golf is a definitive history of a grand sport and instills in any viewer an intense attitude toward the game. As both education and entertainment, this three-tape set hits a hole in one. --Zachary Lively

A comprehensive Story for Golf ... but not much with Tiger!
This video covers a wide scope for golf history. From how to make a feather golf ball to golf course. Golfers can make use of the contents to test other colleagues. One point to be criticized is that there is little to link with Tiger Woods (...) (actually it is Narr. by Jim Mckey). There is only one chapter mentioned Tiger but it also mentioned other great golfers, in similar manner. That's why one star has been eliminated. Dear Tiger fans, please note.

Story of Golf
The Story of Golf is an amazing journey that traces the beginnings of golf through today's game as we know it. It is beautifully shot and edited and you'll love Jim McKay's narration. This is a must have for golfers of any age. Bravo !

Tony Hawk's Gigantic Skatepark Tour 2000
Released in DVD by Red Distribution, In (10 September, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Tony Hawk
Average review score:

Somewhat dissapointing
Well if you're trying to choose between the 2001 and the 2000 tour, get the 2001 tour. After watching the 2001 tour, this DVD was a little dissapointing. The lineup of skaters is just as good, but they just don't do as much. The only people who get much air time are Tony Hawk and Jason Ellis and the bikers. Which would be cool, but when you've got people like Andrew Reynolds and Brian Sumner listed on the video, but they have about 3 minutes combined air time on a 6 hour DVD its kinda sad. And the complete lack of Mike Vallely and the very sparse footage of Bam Margera means everything is pretty much tech, rather than burly, and the tech isn't that impressive.

Having said that, the skating isn't too bad. They got stuck with a bunch of rather undesirable parks to skate, so there's nothing that's especially progressive on here. And the extra cirricular activities aren't that much fun to watch either. If you're a fan of the series, its kinda cool to have, and I'm glad I bought it, but it really isn't that great of a skateboarding video. Get the 2001 tour.

Hours of Entertainment
This video is outstanding. Jason Ellis is laugh out loud funny every time the camera is on him. Of course Tony Hawk's skating is amazing. A good view of life from the road, and a snapshot of how skateboarding's popularity has soared. The rest of the skaters / bmxers also get some good footage, and the 'off days' adventures when the crew is not skating are pretty entertaining as well.

1961 World Series - New York Yankees vs. Cincinnati Reds

What happened after Roger Maris hit home run number 61*
The 1961 World Series might have been one of the most anti-climactic Fall Classics in baseball history, after Roger Maris hit home run 61* on the last day of the season (it is shown on this video). But even with Mickey Mantle playing in only two games and getting only one hit, the New York Yankees defeated the Cincinnati Reds in five games. The series was memorable for the Bronx Bombers for several reasons. Series MVP Whitey Ford, 25-4 during the regular season, won two games and continued the bad year for the Bambino as he broke Babe Ruth's 1918 record of 29 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings with 32. Ralph Houk became only the third first-year manager to win the Series, and second baseman Bobby Richardson, who set a record with 12 RBI's the previous year, set another record with nine hits in a five-game Series.

The 1961 Series started out being dominated by pitching and the long ball. Ford pitched a 2-0 2-hit shutout in Game 1 with Elston Howard and Moose Skowron hitting home runs. Joe Jay, who won 21 games for Fred Hutchinson's club, evened the series with a 6-2 victory but when the Reds returned home to Cincinnati the Yankees won all three games. In Game 3 Red's pitcher Bob Purkey gave up only six hits but lost when John Blanchard hit a pinch-hit homer in the 8th inning to tie the game and Roger Maris hit his only long ball of the Series in the 9th to give the Yankees the lead. Ford, who hurt his ankle in the 5th inning and had to leave the game, combined with Jim Coates for 7-0 victory in Game 4. Then the Yankees scored 5 runs in the top of the first of the final game on way to a 13-5 route (with both Mantle and Yogi Berra out of the lineup no less) as scrub Hector Lopez drove in 5 runs.

In winning their 19th world title the Yankees hit 7 home runs to the Reds' three. NL MVP Frank Robinson had his first taste of World Series play but only batted .200 with one home run, but things would go better for him in the future in the other league. However, let no one pretend that taking care of the Reds in five games got rid of the bad memories from losing to the Pittsburgh Pirates the year before. This black & white video runs 37 minutes.
