Thomas The Tank Engine and Friends - Races, Rescues & Runaways
Released in DVD by Anchor Bay Entertain (23 July, 2002)
MPAA Rating:
Director: David Mitton
Thomas and his English engine buddies face floods, landslides, and taunting trucks in these half dozen 5-minute stories narrated by Alec Baldwin. As in their previous adventures, the spunky toy vehicles survive their mishaps with a combination of quick thinking and help from their fellow vehicles. The hard-working Percy is irked at how dirty he gets hauling rock and coal until being trapped by an avalanche from a mine-shaft collapse puts things in perspective. Competition comes to the Island of Sodor when lorries (British for "trucks") with a bad attitude try to take the engines' places. But a series of accidents and breakdowns restores the engines to their rightful place. The 35-minute video is capped off by a 3-minute "music video" featuring kids singing "Accidents Will Happen" over a series of clips showing the vehicles involved in a series of crashes and other misadventures involving jelly, snow, and a runaway "boulder" that looks suspiciously like a tennis ball. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Fun stories to keep the kids amused
Thomas and Friends never fail me in entertaining my three-year-old. The stories are always short and simple, but interesting enough to keep a kid's attention. This one is especially entertaining because of all the flooding, crashes, and angry characters who eventually learn a lesson or two in the end.

Very great DVD!
Thomas & his friends like to race to the rescue when in trouble.
In this release, Thomas & his friends teach some horrid lorries a lesson, say bye bye to George the steamroller, & get to see Henry in trouble. But it was really the driver's folt Henry had a accident. Sir Topham hatt should blame it on them! I say this DVD for all ages!

Great and Cool!
This Thomas video is one of the best. My favorite story was Horrid Lorry becasue at the end of the story you get to see some funny scenes. I'm still wondering why people say its scary for kids when it really isn't. I thought Percy was brave when the mine was collsasping and when Toby was floating down the river.
This is a must have for your collection. You are going to like it!

Chaplin - The Collection, Vol. 3 - Kid Auto Races in Venice / The Rival Mashers / A Night Out
Released in DVD by Madacy Entertainment (02 February, 1999)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Charles Chaplin
Starring: Charles Chaplin and Chester Conklin

Crude, unfunny
I don't believe that Chaplin achieved comedic excellence until his features. These shorts are crude physical humor and totally unfunny. Dated stuff.

Another nicely restored set of Chaplin films!
Okay, this review is for the Image dvd of the Chaplin Essanay Comedies, Volume 1. If this review appears on any other product, with the exception of a Kino product, then know that this review has NOTHING to do with whatever you are looking at. If you are looking at Madacy or Koch videos, then just go away now, and look for a good video, because Madacy and Koch videos of Chaplin are garbage.

ANYWAYS...

I give this five stars, because the restoration, music, and presentation are awesome. The films are the most complete they have been in over 80 years, and are mastered from the best available materials. David Shepherd worked on these for a decade or so, and some of the films come from as many as five different sources. This can be a little odd sometimes, as the picture will change in quality and framing every so often, which is a bit of a jumpy sensation, but it's either that or just miss the footage altogether.

As far as the films go - well, this is not Chaplin's best work. "His New Job", "A Night Out", and "In the Park" are slight, derivative, and not terribly interesting. "A Jitney Elopement" is fascinating for the fact that Chaplin relies on a lot of tracking and racing shots for the chase, which all happens in cars. "The Champion" is a very good film, and is the best of this lot.

Chaplin made better films than these for Essanay, which can especially be seen on Disc 2 of the series.

This is NOT a good disc for the person who is just getting interested in Chaplin or silent films. You would be better of with the later features, such as City Lights, The Kid, The Gold Rush, or The Circus, which should all be reissued in 2003 in gorgeous quality - I can't wait!

But if you are acquainted with Chaplin, and have read a good book or two about his career and development, then this is a fine dvd to get.

Enjoy!

WELL DONE
This is a must have for an avid Chaplin fan.Great restoration by David Shepard and musical score by Robert Israel and Eric James.I highly recommend this and Vols.2,3 for your collection.

Alot of fun for any enthusiast
If you couldn't catch the race in person, or on TV, this DVD allows you to see highlights of each class event as well as a nice chunk of the acrobatics. The image quality is good, it appears to come from the same master as the VHS version, although the quality is still good enough not to detract from the enjoyment of the event. I do wish the packaging contained more information, such as definitions of the classes and a map of the course.
