Robert Mirabal: Music From a Painted Cave
Released in DVD by Wea Corp (25 September, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Robert Mirabal
Fusing traditional Southwestern Native American tribal music and modern beats, Robert Mirabal: Music from a Painted Cave is a fascinating performance. It's a combination that you might question, but Mirabal is such a talented singer-songwriter that not only does he make it work, you could argue he has created a new genre.

The first part of Music from a Painted Cave finds Mirabal, the Mirabal Singers/Dancers, and Rare Tribal Mob in traditional tribal dress, using native instruments and performing tribal dances. A song he heard from his grandmother, "Ee-you-oo," is a paean to children, and "Little Indians" is a lovely folk ballad he wrote in the same vein. Later in the program Mirabal changes his traditional garb for leather pants, and the music becomes more like rock & roll in the energetic "Hope," although the native-drum backbeat is always there. Besides being musically inspired, Music from a Painted Cave is visually stunning: the costumes are beautiful, the staging elaborate, and the choreography gorgeous. --Dana Van Nest

AWESOME!!!
This DVD is SO wonderful! I have seen Robert Mirabal and the RTM in concert and it is an experience that changed my life.
This DVD is of the PBS special a few years back but it is like being at the concert when you watch it. They put on a GREAT show and Robert tells the stories behind the songs on most of his songs. If you love Native American music with a touch of "rock" in it, you will love this music. The dancers, as well as Robert will show you their culture through this DVD and you will never forget it.

A musical bridge
Hauntingly beautiful, powerful lyrics, wondeful imagery -- this is a great CD. Robert Mirabal is creating a musical bridge between his Native American culture and mainstream America. Listening to it goes beyond a joyful experience; it is an entry into a whole new world.

Show me the mystery!
If you want a mystical journey through the Native-American experience, this is it. Robert Mirabal (flute, drums, vocals, dance and narration) and his group (Rare Tribal Mob) excel in this musical and visual extravaganza. Not only is there ultra-hip music, but a wide assortment of Native-American dancers and costumes. Mirabal's wife (Dawn) and four year old daughter (Aspen)are among the featured performers (Aspen steals the show). Mirabal (A Pueblo from Taos, New Mexico) has evolved from being strictly a flute player to become a greatly versatile artist. If you saw Robert in the PBS production of "SPIRIT" and liked what you saw, this takes it a step forward. This DVD puts Robert Mirabal at center stage and lets the spotlight shine. Shine on you crazy diamond!

a Soul of a People
I may be wrong but to me Kitaro's music captures the Soul of Japan, and this is a superb example! The negative rating probably came from a Rock Concert Junkie. This is Class, Pure Class.

the best
If there is one, and only one, concert I had to choose from the work of master Kitaro, this would be it.
Best sound, visuals, and harmony.

Advise to buy
Very good disk. When I his(its) bought I not even thought about such excellent concerto. And sound simply super (DTS)

Mannheim Steamroller - Fresh Aire 8
Released in DVD by Navarre Corporation/ (23 April, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Followers of Mannheim Steamroller's 28-year-old Fresh Aire series will welcome this ambitious program of mesmerizing music and video. Series creator Chip Davis spared no expense in creating this final Fresh Aire opus, supporting Mannheim's electronic soundscapes with the London Symphony and compelling visual counterparts, each exploring the central theme of Infinity. Musically, this is one of Mannheim's least inventive efforts, but noteworthy exceptions (like "Fractals") come to life in exquisitely discrete 5.1-channel sound. While the visuals range from cheesy re-creations of Plato's ancient symposia to the hypnotic progression of mathematically generated fractal imagery, the DVD's behind-the-scenes featurettes include enlightening "professor's notes" from scholarly experts, lending the entire enterprise an all-ages air of exploratory spirit. Other featurettes reveal Davis's all-encompassing input, and you can't help but admire the synthesis of art, music, and education that Davis has created. There's magic here, if you're receptive to the enduring Fresh Aire vibe. --Jeff Shannon

"to infinity and beyond is FRESH AIRE 8"
American Gramaphone presents - "Mannheim Steamroller - Fresh Aire 8" on DVD, which brings us to the completion of the "Fresh Aire Series". Chip Davis takes the listener on a musical odyssey, with the theme - "Infinity" for "Fresh Aire 8", ranging from wedding band, philosophy, mathematics, art, cosmology, music, the Egyptian afterlife and Leonardo da Vinci (the infinite thinker)...mankind's curiosities about himself and the universe.

The entire DVD is refreshing, just what you would expect from this ground breaking group of talented musicians, and just for good measure the London Symphony joins in, plus a full motion in DVD 5.1 Surround Sound, what more could one ask for. This album is what you hoped for and more, don't pass this one up...and extraordinary collection from the "King of New Age", outstanding and original...Chip Davis has done it again...another WINNER! There is a wide variety of styles on this DVD, loaded with exciting and intriguing arrangements. "The Heart and the Feather" is wonderful, as is the "Greek Thinkers Suite", being of Greek descent I'm a little prejudice. "The Steamroller" gives the viewer just what they want to see and hear ~ ENTERTAINMENT! Love the "Back To The Future", touch with saxophones, and I thought the different style of this piece was a nice change. Mannheim Steamroller compositions never should be put into any certain category, though; whether they like it or not, I think "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" and "Joy To The World" is the epitome of Mannheim. This DVD is excellent for another journey into the world of science and exploration into the mind and body of the creatures that roam this planet Earth.

So step right up and buy a ticket to a trip to infinity and beyond, all through the eyes of Chip Davis and his friends The Mannheim Streamroller, gotta love it!

FRESH AIRE 8.1
I've been a Steamroller fan for many years now, and I have to admit that I thought Fresh Aire 8 (CD version) was subpar compared to the brilliant Fresh Aire 7. It was good, but somehow lacked something. Then I got the DVD.

The DVD version is really the way to experience Fresh Aire 8. The sound is incredible, the videos are pleasant enough (though the Fractals video could just be a screensaver), and the insights from Chip Davis are truly the next generation of liner notes!

The DVD isn't flawless. Some of the videos are cheesy, and the Greek Philosophers' Suite plods along a little too slowly for my taste. But you have to admire the sheer amount of work that went into this project. More importantly, the music from Fresh Aire 8 suddenly seems better when paired with the images. Chip admits that he wrote the music as a score for these videos (unlike most artists who do it the other way around), so may account for why the CD version didn't hold up as well. Just like how a movie soundtrack is less effective without the movie.

I've been a bit rough on Chip Davis over the past few months. His Ambience albums weren't up to Fresh Aire standards and Christmas Extraordinaire paled in comparison to the first two Christmas albums. But he really came through here. If you're a Steamroller fan, you ought to get this, even if you already have the CD version.

Technical Achievement
The music on this disk is easy listening and, in my opinion, is good but nothing special. What really shines here is the technical quality. First, it's multi-format. One side is DVD-Audio, the other has DTS and Dolby 5.1 soundtracks. Don't you wish ALL disks were like this? Secondly, your get a second CD disk of the music in HDCD. Good value. On the DTS-Dolby side, you can watch graphic and real-life images that were shot and edited to go with the music..... which has a theme: Infinity. Unfortunately, those images are not available on the DVD-Audio side. A clever contest has even been worked into the DVD which gives you a clue and then you use that clue on the web site to enter a drawing (through 2003). The music is good, the sound is excellent and the value is very good. What's not to like? If you are an audiophile, a fan of new age music or you are already a Mannheim Steamroller fan, you'll want this.

Natural Splendors, Vol. 1 - Nature Scenes from the American West & Southwest
Released in DVD by Dvd International (14 May, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Jim Delutes and H Bekker

Awe-inspiring!
The best thing about this DVD is the photographs - the color is vivid and the images are stunningly beautiful. The use of light is truly unique. The way the images flow from one to the next is flawless. A sense of movement is created by the way the cinematographer pans images, starts close and zooms out to reveal the entire image. This creates a sense of involvement by the viewer...gives one the sense that one is a part of the photograph. I love this DVD - it has a calming and uplifting effect on me.

SPECTACULAR ZEN!!!
With a high stress job, and the single mother of a disabled child, I found this DVD to be extremely helpful at the end of the day. The feeling of soothing relaxation is phenomenal! And so much cheaper than a day at the spa! I was so into this DVD for myself, I failed to think about what it might do for my autistic 9 year old daughter. One evening, after getting into trouble at school for her hyperactive mischieviousness, she climbed on the couch with me and sat their quietly, totally engrossed in the images and music. I decided to try it every morning while getting ready for school and what a difference it made! This DVD could be used extensively for therapeutic purposes in special needs children, not to mention, the mothers of these childrend! I plan to give this DVD to many of my friends who also deal with the stress of special needs children.

Relaxing
I have used this DVD as background ambiance for a dinner party and it was well received by all of the guests. It also has been extremely helpful in winding down after a hectic day. I can choose any of the 13 chapters from the menu and just chill for 10 minutes. The stresses of the day just melt away after a few minutes of these stunning images and the wonderful music.

Krishna Das - The Yoga of Chant
Released in DVD by Bmg Distribution (VI (05 February, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Krishna Das

Like being there
Spend an evening with this DVD and you will feel as if you have spent the evening with Krishna Das and his friends and followers. The music and chanting are excellent and the warmth of the people involved provides good rapport. At the end of the disc, you will feel uplifted and relaxed.

Beautiful Chanting
The tape was very rich with meditative music-Kirtan.
It even has some footage on his Guru.
Next best thing to a live performance.
KD has a rich and powerful voice that keeps ringing in one's head.

KD's "Yoga of Chant"..the next best thing to a kirtan!
I just LOVED this video! Having been to kirtan with KD..this was the next best thing. The chants were very beautiful ones{I have all his CDs & am very familiar with all of them}-I was pleased with what was selected for the video. His speaking was also very moving and captures the "emotions" that accompany chant. The photography & editing were wonderful-they also caught the "mood" of an evening spent with this remarkable man,and his fellow musicians.Speaking of which...ALL the players were glorious. They speak to a place far beyond emotion{and description}.All the people in attendance that were viewed on the video, including the children, were ecstatic & joyous{as it is & should be,at such a gathering}.Jivamukti Yoga Center, where this video was filmed is a very pious space, which also adds to the experience. The photos & film clips of KD's beloved guru,Neem Karoli Baba are very, very moving. If you enjoy Krishna Das,chanting or BOTH-DO NOT MISS THIS VIDEO/DVD.If you never experienced either, try it anyway-it will really move you!!!While it obviously isn't an actual KD kirtan,it will tide you over till he comes to your area again.Enjoy fellow yogis & yoginis...OM SHANTI,SHANTI PEACE!!

Timeless... A National Parks Odyssey
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (25 February, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Patrick O'Hearn
Average review score:

Extraordinary !
I just purchased TIMELESS photographed by David Fortney & scored by Patrick O'Hearn. This is brilliant stuff. The 45 min presentation sends the viewer into another dimension with a mesmerizing effect. Fortney does complete justice covering major National Parks within the United States & Canada. Using amazing camera techniques & time lapse photography, Fortney is able to create images never probably seen before ! I am a big fan of Patrick O'Hearn's music & in spite of some of my favourite tracks not being included, O' Hearn has done full justice to the score & the 5.1 mix which is a hidden feature in the menu section.

Amazing visuals and music
"Timeless" is a DVD by photographer David Fortney and composer Patrick O'Hearn, with stunning scenery from US National Parks coupled with O'Hearn's highly cinematic music.

I've been a fan of Patrick's music for years, and this was just what I was waiting for - a chance to hear his music coupled with visuals, a match made in heaven. I have problems finding a musician who makes more picturesque music than Patrick; Fortney clearly made the right choice when turning to him.

If you've seen the opening credits of the movie "White Sands" from 1992, a film which Patrick scored, then you know how this DVD looks like - terrific recordings of deserts, oceans, waterfalls, mountains, forests and skies put to O'Hearn's music.

The music material is taken from all but two of his solo albums; "Rivers Gonna Rise" and "Eldorado" is not featured, probably because these two albums are a bit too "poppy" to fit with the visuals. But when that is said, I wouldn't have had problems finding a track from each of those too.

There is a couple of tracks I miss, like "Devil's Lake" and "Sacrifice" from "Indigo", but you can't have all. The last track on the DVD was a surprise to me, as long as I don't have the "Ancient Dreams" album, which this track "Beauty In Darkness" is taken from. That song is another Patrick O'Hearn classic, I especially love the end with those tender piano tones which segues into those last great words from Roosevelt.

A DVD for any music lover with taste and feeling. If you like this you should check out the "Visions" DVD from Spotted Peccary Music and Enigma's "Remember The Future" DVD.

Only sit down and enjoy!!!!!!
The images and his music are really exceptional...
Is incredible how the camera can gather so many details and is capable of placing in places full of mystery.

I recommended also for Patrick O'hearn's fans music. Last track is Ancient Dream beauty version, very "So Flows...".

Congratulations also to Fortney. WHAT A GREAT TEAM!!!!!!!!

Rhythm of Resistance - Black South African Music
Released in DVD by Shanachie (10 October, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Jeremy Marre
Starring: ladysmith Black Mambazo
Average review score:

Excellent documentary, the soundtrack is even better!
This is an excellent documentary not only of the South African music scene, but also about life in Black S/A during the aparthied days while Mandela had yet to be freed. We enjoy the entertaining music along with seeing the horrible conditions that produce this genre. However, if you like this, there is an excellent soundtrack of this documentary that features some music that did not appear in the film that was on a CD from Shanachie records. Y'all need to BRING THAT BACK in print and enjoy.

Classic Documentary on South Africa
This is a well-known classic music documentary on South Africa. A point of reference as a report and as one of the first explorations of this rich scene. It is mentioned on the 'Graceland' album cover notes as the place where Paul Simon first saw Ladysmith! Beautifully produced, edited and shot. Pleasurable!

Windham Hill in Concert
Released in DVD by Geneon Entertainment (23 April, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Stanley Dorfman
Average review score:

Captivating Performances by Windham Hill Artists
This is a great DVD if you love the music that Windham Hill was producing in the 80s. Where else can you watch Michael Hedges performing Aerial Boundaries, or William Ackerman performing with an accompanying lyricon, along with Shadowfax and Scott Cossu performing their original compositions? Michael Hedges was the Paganini of the acoustic guitar. Nobody ever did more than he did to redefine the instrument and explore its possibilites. Unfortunately for me, the video of him performing Aerial Boundaries was somewhat disappointing in that you can't make out what his hands are doing through half of it. Obviously the producers weren't considering aspiring guitarists when they edited this video. And since Michael was tragically taken away in an auto accident in 1997 we will never have a video of him teaching his pieces and his unorthdox but brilliant style.

The biggest complaint I have for this DVD is the lighting and videography. Too often the camera catches the subjects in the shadows, or a glare coming from the lights reflecting off of the instruments, or a haze created by the lighting of the stage. Also, there are some puzzling shots of the landscape surrounding the outdoor theater. Still, the performances are well worth the price of the DVD as they capture a moment in time when "New Age" music came into its own.

He lives on...
This DVD would be worth buying if all it had was the Michael Hedges performances. However, the other artists turn out unique and delightful music. Hedges steals the show, and as a guitarist, the chance to see him performing visually is priceless. Wonderful music and an amazingly helpful tool when deciphering Hedges' complex creations.

Get Blown Away
I remember it clearly - it was 1987 & i was browsing in a Blockbuster waiting for my laundry to finish next door. There was this amazing guitar playing & when i looked up at the TV monitor this guy just blew my mind! Michael Hedges was a one of kind guitar player who changed everything. Tune into his spirit in this video & you'll understand what i'm talking about.

Underworld Live - Everything Everything
Released in DVD by Bmg/V2 (10 October, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Yes, electronica has taken over the world of music. All you need to do is take a look at the first shot of Underworld's live concert video to see that. The sprawling, dancing masses that cover the fields testify that the medium has found its way out of dark, sweaty raves and into the global mainstream. The shot makes the crowds at Woodstock seem small. However, while seeing electronica live can be a thrilling experience, watching it performed at home on your television is a completely different story. The British trio Underworld is widely considered to be one of electronica's most popular acts (same class as the Chemical Brothers and the Orb), and this DVD presents nine of their hyper, 10-minute-plus jams in five different countries (Japan, Holland, Belgium, England, and Ireland). While the sound is crisp and the beats infectious, there's not much to watching an electronica band (you usually have your eyes closed at a show, frantically dancing). The band tries to rectify this problem by using Alan Parker-esque, headache-inducing editing techniques and more strobe-lighting effects than the human brain can possibly handle in one sitting. Also, to make up for the lack of dynamics, Underworld has packed this DVD with a ton of goodies. You can program the concert any way you'd like to hear it; it contains five minutes of outtakes and a couple bonus tracks; and, most quizzically, they included the full 90-minute visuals shown on the large video screen behind the band. Some hardcore fans may find the screen graphics mesmerizing, but mostly it feels like watching a screensaver with a soundtrack. If you can't wait for Underworld to come to a field near you, grab the DVD; otherwise, just go to a rave. It's cheaper. --Dave McCoy

Not the trippiest thing ever
A friend told me to watch this because he thought it was the trippest thing he'd ever seen. I wouldn't say that, but it's still pretty cool. The music and graphics are nicely choreographed.

Wow

Like meditation under water
It's a nice DVD for divers and all friends of the underwater world. There is no word - only very soft meditative wonderful music. Only the quality of the filmed scenes is not the level as for example IMAX films. But nevertheless I can recomend it very much!

Very Relaxing
And great pictures! Also check out the "Relax with world animals and Fish" from Captain Jon Explores the Ocean -- Also on Amazon.

exceptional

Partly because of the fabulous music by Hilary Stagg!
ITs a very soothing dvd! I recommend it highly!
