The Avengers '64, Set 2
Released in DVD by A & E Entertainment (17 July, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Directors: Ray Austin, Peter Graham Scott, Roger Jenkins, John Krish, Robert Day, Jonathan Alwyn, Don Sharp, Don Chaffey, Bill Bain, and Robert Fuest
"Genuine eccentrics are a dying breed. Could be amusing," notes a character in "Build a Better Mousetrap," one of the six rarely seen black-and-white episodes in this three-volume boxed set from the third season of The Avengers. Genuine eccentrics and diabolical madmen plotting to plunge the world into chaos were The Avengers' stock in trade. Nobody on TV did it better.

As with the first set, which contains volumes 1 to 3, what makes this set a must for collectors is that these episodes, virtually unseen in the United States, feature Honor Blackman as Mrs. Cathy Gale, who preceded Mrs. Emma Peel as the leather-clad partner to Patrick Macnee's urbane, umbrella-toting gentleman spy John Steed. Blackman left the series after two seasons to star as Pussy Galore in Goldfinger. In "Lobster Quadrille," which concludes this set as well as the Gale era, Steed remarks that he expects the departing Gale to be "pussy-footing along sun-soaked shores."

Volume 4 contains two topnotch episodes. "Mousetrap" revolves around the Peck sisters, two "wicked" old ladies who seem to have put a curse on the surrounding countryside that causes all mechanical devises to stall. In "The Outside-In Man," James Maxwell steals the show as an agent presumed dead who materializes just as the man he was once assigned to assassinate arrives in Britain for arms talks. Volume 5 contains "The Charmers," which was remade in 1967 as "The Correct Way to Kill." "Concerto," in which Steed must cooperate with the Russians to prevent an assassination at a recital, is a classical gas. Even a weaker episode such as "Esprit de Corps," which opens volume 6, has its bizarre charms, as renegade Scotsmen plot a coup and plan to install Gale on the throne as Queen Anne the Second. --Donald Liebenson

Disappointing; waste of $$$
Perhaps I was foolish to think I'd be seeing the same quality episodes as the black & white versions with Diana Rigg. Well, actually, I was foolish, because these Avengers episodes are nothing like the ones we "fans" know and love. The quality of the picture is poor -- dark, for one thing, and when someone moves, there is a blur until they resettle into their pose. this gets quite annoying since the actors move about a lot, though rather stiffly, as if overrehearsed. You can see the camera continually refocusing in order to focus on the actors as they travel about. Everything is done in limited sound stages, in sets that are bare and hokey. The stories are also hokey, if you can understand them -- not that they aren't simple and clear but the sound quality can be quite poor, so I've even had the volume turned to max but still cannot make out everything that is being said. The acting, too, is way overdone. Imagine a Steed so jovial that he's annoying, and an Honor Blackman/Mrs. Gale so stern that she's, well, grim and uninteresting. Stick to the Rigg series if you want entertainment!

Early adventures for Steed
For all the fans of The Avengers familiar with the Emma Peel/Tara King era of the show, these early episodes featuring Cathy Gale and Venus Smith may come as something of a disappointment. In fact, fans of the later shows may find it hard to believe that they are even part of the same TV series!

After the initial run of 26 episodes featuring Police Surgeon David Keel and his cohort John Steed had aired in the UK in 1961/62, the producers of the program opted to bring Steed to the forefront of the action and give him a number of different "assistants." Thus, for season two, 26 further episodes were made and broadcast in 1962/63 featuring Steed abetted by Martin King, Venus Smith or Cathy Gale. Mrs. Gale turned out to be the most popular and successful foil for the suave agent, and the other characters did not return after season two. Unlike the later Peel/King stories which were all made on film, these studio based TV shows are much more reliant on dialogue and plot than visual elements, and can be somewhat heavy going as a result.

A&E is releasing these stories in a somewhat confusing order, and has started with season three. The first two sets released, Avengers 64 1 & 2, feature the LAST six episodes of season three. Next comes Avengers 63 sets 1 & 2 which comprises of the first half of the season. Next up in the release order is 63 sets 3 & 4 which precede 1 & 2 in running order and in fact feature the last seven stories from season two, plus the first from season three. Confused? Ultimately, it doesn't really matter, since thankfully there's no real reason to watch the stories in chronological order anyway.

What is interesting is the development of the production standards. 63 sets 3 & 4, featuring the latter stories from season two, are far more rudimentary in terms of production quality. The sets are extremely small and sparse; The direction very slap-hazard; Camera work shoddy; Sound is extremely poor; and the acting is negligible. With no budget for editing or reshooting, all the actor's fluffs and goofs stayed in. Steed's character is far less suave and sophisticated then he became later during his familiar role alongside Mrs. Peel, and the relationship with Mrs. Gale in particular is at first downright hostile with very little warmth between the two. He seems to get along much better with Miss Venus Smith, a night club singer who he engages at various gigs to act as his eyes and ears. Venus is a very odd character, and played strangely, but enthusiastically by Julie Stevens. She looks about 12, sings like she's forty, and dresses like anything in between. She also seems extremely naïve and it's hard to imagine why Steed engages her to help him at all. The far more intelligent and elegant Mrs. Gale does eventually warm up to Steed, and in the season three stories where she is the exclusive companion to him, their relationship develops nicely and they become much warmer and closer to each other.

The production values on season three are also much better than the earlier episodes. The sets became larger and more elaborate. The direction, lighting and sound improved greatly and the acting was much less wooden. Some editing was clearly allowed on these later stories, whereas the earlier ones clearly were broadcast as if they were live. There's a terrific blunder in "Six hands across a table," where Cathy is called "Ros" in one scene, and both actors realize the mistake, but keep going. An even better goof comes in "Concerto" when Nigel Stock forgets his lines completely and a very audible prompt is given from off camera. Terrific stuff.

The quality of the DVD's is somewhat disappointing, even accounting for the age of the material and the production values mentioned above. It may not be the case, but it certainly appears that A&E have made no attempt whatsoever to re-master the original tapes, and the flaws, jumps, scratches and sound blips are too numerous to mention. Virtually every episode on 63 sets 3 & 4 are hampered by picture and sound flaws and defects. Things do improve for 63 1 & 2 and 64 1 & 2, but the quality is still disappointing. Mind you, it appears they have done nothing to clean up the Tara King episodes either!

As a big fan of the series, I wouldn't even consider not having these episodes in my collection, but if you're looking for the wacky camp humor and the tele-fantasy of the Peel/King eras, these stories may not be for you.

Build a Better Mousetrap and see for yourself
'The Outside-In Man' and 'Build a Better Mousetrap' are two of the best early episodes from this series. 'The Avengers" was a popular 1960's British fantasy-adventure series that focused on the exploits of a male-female duo in the service of the British government. The series underwent several changes of its female lead but its one constant male lead was John Steed always portrayed by the debonair Patrick Macnee (Originally the John Steed had two male partners but that format eventually changed). Kathy Gale portrayed by Honor Blackman became Steed's first female partner. However, when Honor Blackman departed the series and Diana Rigg entered as Mrs. Emma Peel, the show became an international sensation. Rigg brought sophistication, wit, charm and beauty, which hid her lethal and highly visual judo and karate abilities. Macnee and Rigg complemented each other beautifully with their carefree witty and charming exchange of dialogue. The show distinguished itself with bizarre and futuristic villains and fantastic plots. Popular at the height of the James Bond craze, the show was able to distinguish itself with its simply over-the-top visual style. Laurie Johnson's catchy and sophisticated main title theme matched the visuals of the show and still conjures up an image of the series when listened to today. When Diana Rigg left the series, Linda Thorson entered as John Steed's new partner Tara King. The series soon went off the air in the United States. It was a shame because the episodes with Tara King were quite good. The King episodes seemed to be a little more down to earth and contained some very good writing and intricate plotting. In any event series definitely left its mark amongst the finest. These DVD copies are gorgeous.

The 4th Floor
Released in DVD by A-Pix Entertainment (11 July, 2000)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Josh Klausner
Starring: Juliette Lewis, William Hurt, and Shelley Duvall
When interior decorator Juliette Lewis inherits a handsome, huge New York apartment at the rent-controlled monthly bargain of $400, it looks too good to be true. It is. Walking into the creepiest collection of neighbors since Roman Polanski's The Tenant, she's accosted by nosy first-floor busybody Shelley Duvall ("Is that your boyfriend? Oh, you like older men?"), a surly superintendent who isn't allowed his own set of keys, a mystery tenant who flees at the sight of her, and a reclusive fourth-floor neighbor who turns a war of wills into an all-out guerrilla campaign of terror. When her place is overrun with rats and maggots (yech!), pushy boyfriend William Hurt insists she leave, but she's determined to continue her first bout of independence...even if it kills her.

First-time director Josh Klauser manages an entertaining if not quite engaging bit of urban paranoia--what apartment dweller hasn't worried about a secretive neighbor?--but lets it all slip into a silly, half-baked climax and a thoroughly predictable final twist. He also slips in references to Rear Window and Pacific Heights (two other paranoid tales of nasty neighbors), but none of it compares to morning-show personality Hurt's creepy TV weather clown routine: he sings, he dances, he chirps "Rise and shine" with the droopy-eyed intensity of an over-caffeinated drug addict. Now that's scary. --Sean Axmaker

Put on your seat belts and get ready for a thrill ride!
In one word, you can describe "The 4th Floor": INTENSE! In this not quite new thriller, Juliette Lewis (Kalifornia, The Other Sister) plays as Jane, a woman who moves into her dead aunt's recently vacated apartment only to find out that she is surrounded by a whole lot of really nosey people. Things really start getting exciting when she starts getting terrorized by the person on the 4th floor. Some people say this movie is a waste of time, well I have to say, that this movie is worth it. Just rent it or buy it. Buy it on DVD for the alternate ending that should've been left in the finished cut.

Loved It...
Personally, I found this movie to be quite engaging. It had been awhile since I actually sat down and watched a movie but this one came on the other night on HBO and I was glued to my screen. I thought the movie was full of suspense and at times humor. I admit it's not the greatest film in the world but it's worth checking out.

Shut off the Lights...get the Popcorn!
I picked this movie off the shelf having never read a review or plot outline. From the very start I was sucked into the mystery of "The 4th Floor". I watch a LOT of movies (1-2 per day)and very few keep me as glued to the screen as this one did. I had no idea what to expect, so I just let it lead me to the edge of my seat. All of the characters in the apartment building were skillfully introduced and given quirks that lead you in all directions to keep you guessing. Not until the end does everything they said and did make sense.(Kinda like the 'Sixth Sense') I loved the fact that I had no idea how it was going to end until the end and then was suprised at the ending's "ending". I thought it was fresh and creative and unpredictable.

I liked it so much I bought a copy the next day! Perhaps the people who don't like it feel there wasn't enough gore to be "good". I was thrilled that a movie could be so enthrawling without all the gore that has creeped into the movie mainstream. I call this a top-notch thriller/mystery!

It does help if you do NOT know how it ends!

Silent Trigger
Released in DVD by Twentieth Century Fox (17 December, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Russell Mulcahy
Average review score:

good story but horribly acted
wooden characters all around, including that damn spider seeing dude and the chick has some stilled acting as well. some good action though but that cant save a lot of holes in the story, I mean dont get me wrong the place where they made it looks like a cool place but come on, Dolph Lundgren is a horrible action hero, period

2 stars as an action movie; 4 stars as a personality clip
Silent Trigger, especially during its opening sequences and several flashback episodes, shows clearly the handy work and influence of director Russel Mulcahy of "Highlander" lore.

For anybody expecting a fast-paced action movie, this film should not be their first choice. If, however, one is interested in a personality study of the relationship between a rookie spotter and an experienced sniper, and how this may be affected by their employer, "the Agency", the viewer is in for a treat.

While this picture includes some action scenes, the plot is overall developed at a rather slow pace.

It seems unfortunate, however, that the studio did not include the original cinematic wide-screen on this DVD, and provides only the standard full-screen cut, which proves to be a real boon for panoramic scenes, as well as several of the action scenes in which a good part of the action happens off-screen or on the perimeter.

From the looks of it the studio also omitted a few scenes, rendering the DVD shorter than the original feature length.

While this motion picture is a must-see for any Dolph Lundgren fan, all viewers would be better served if the studio would finally elect to release a full-featured wide-screen version of this movie.

SOLID MOVIE
Silent Trigger is a solid movie, it's two main charecters are complete with their own personalities. In the begining Clegg "Gina Bellman" is a rookie spotter for "the agency" but a few years later "big fast forward" she is a highly experienced woman. Keep in mind folks, that Gina Bellman is a stuningly gourgeous female and in this movie she looks absolutly stunning. Plus she carries a gun and wears tight black clothing so the eye candy aspect of the movie is deffiantly there. Dolph Lungren is a great action movie actor "even though in real life he doesn't really like being an action charecter". This movie shows the other side of him that you don't see much of in other movies. In this movie he starts questioning his profesion and why he works as an assasin. Clegg also wonders why they are assasins as well. The diologe is great in this movie, Gina Bellmans diologe supports the personality she has, "Strong, Sassy, Sexy" *pefect woman heh?* lol. In real life both Dolph Lungren and Gina Bellman are really cool people who are passionate about acting so thats always a good to know. The movie doesn't get boring at all unlike countless hundreds of Hollywood "blockbuster" movies that just plain sucks. Silent Trigger is one of those movies that doesn't get boring after the 4th time watching it. Everytime I watch it I pick up on something different, it has real life themes scattered in the movie and great action scenes and this great film will get you thinking, guarenteed! I'm praying for a "Silent Trigger 2" to someday be released.

Pat Metheny Group - Imaginary Day
Released in DVD by Pioneer Video (11 September, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Pat Metheny Group
Average review score:

Not a happy fan...
When I ordered this DVD, I expected a show, much like the one provided on the 'We live here, live in Japan' DVD... NOT.

All that is on this DVD is music with a picture accompanying each musical piece. I'm a Metheny fan, having all his albums on 33 1/3 plus CD, even got the PM Songbook. But had I known that this was nothing more than music and pictures, I would have never bought it. Of course, I had to take it out of its package to witness the desaster... so, no refund possible.

By the CD. And beware of the DVD...

Awesome Audio, Awful Video
I've had this DVD of Imaginary Day for some time now, and since I've had it and watched it a few times I really don't like to look at the visuals anymore...The whole thing visually plays like an early-80's rock video. It kills me to think that Steve Rodby, PMG's bassist/producer, who has been in the band for 16 years at the time the film was shot would make decisions like that. It seems to me like he took the raw film and ran it through his computer and said, "Hey, I just picked up this cool video editing program and it lets you do all these neat special effects! Let's see what I can do with it..." All that's missing in the video is a cheesy star wipe. To some this might not be such a bad thing, but a lot of people (like myself) are just totally in awe of Pat's guitar technique. When we're watching him blaze through a solo like it was the easiest thing in the world, and for some reason the video switches to a camera shot behind Pat's back shown at 12 fps it's extremely frustrating. Thank goodness the effects (mostly) take a break for the ballads, otherwise I don't know what I'd do. Those effects might be plausible for an in-studio session, but I like my live DVD's to give me the "you are there watching it all happen" illusion.

Now, the sound, however, is nothing short of astonishing. I would go so far as to say that the reproduction of sound was as faithful as it could possibly be, which is a vast improvment from the "We Live Here" DVD (which was by no means bad, but the sound was a little thin at times).

If you were looking for a great concert VIDEO you may be disappointed, but the sound may be enough to justify purchansing this DVD if the Group is your cup of tea.

Imaginary Day concert at VILLA MONTOLVO
I was fortunate to have been at two of the three
nights they were filming this DVD at Villa Montolvo
in Saratoga,California.

In as much as the performence pales in comparison
to a "LIVE" Pat Metheny Group concert the DVD still
does a wonderful job of capturing the essence of what
this band it about.A no frills kind of group that is
and always has been about the "MUSIC".If you want to
take a nice long "TRIP" go see them "LIVE" you will never
ever forget the experience. Thanks Steve Rodby and band for your
hard work and efforts on this DVD project. Can't hardly
wait to see you again in November.
Best

Mommy II: Mommy's Day
Released in DVD by Roan Group (17 August, 1999)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Max Allan Collins
Average review score:

Don't let the warm & fuzzy titles of these movies fool you.
Aside from a ludicrous scene early on depicting a lethal injection sentence being carried out in what looks like a nurse's office in a suburban elementary school (which, as we find out in the commentary track, was actually filmed in a church basement!), "Mommy 2" is an entertaining, clever thriller, and a good follow-up to "Mommy". I especially liked how writer/director Max Collins didn't give us more of the same. Whereas "Mommy" was more of a horror thriller about a deranged mother, "Mommy 2" is essentially a straight-up murder mystery, where Patty McCormack's "Mommy" character- supposedly rehabilitated through the wonders of modern chemistry- is just one of many suspects in a series of brutal killings. In addition to the well-told mystery story, the DVD emulates the first "Mommy" DVD and includes a load of extras, my favorite of which is a terrific commentary track featuring Mr. Collins and his actors and crew. And, hey-- when you're done with the "Mommy" films, be sure to check out Mr. Collins' latest DVD thriller, "Real Time: Siege at Lucas Street Market". Story and extras wise, it's a blast, maybe his best DVD yet.

Low budget, well made horror flick
Mommy 2 very different from Mommy 1 in which Mommy is now the good guy or should I say gal. Patty gives a new dimension to her "Bad Seed" role - a real good actress - funny she never made it big time. Some good bloody scenes such as the ice skating rink. But my favorite being the electrocutionshower bit with chunks of hair going down the drain - nice touch! Some funny dialog - But i"m innocent. Yeah, so was OJ. Hey Max when's Mommy 3 coming out. Good DVD quality.

Riveting Suspense!
Mommy has done some pretty bad things and in this sequel to "Mommy" she is about to pay for her crimes. But wait, Mommy is not through yet; a woman like her cannot be disposed of so easily. After all, she only wants to clear her name and reunite with her precious daughter Jessica Anne. The media and those around her however are relentless in trying to get her to confess and discover the truth. In addition the famlies of her former victims would like nothing better then to see Mommy dead. Can she riase above it all, and still regain the love of the daughter she once nearly killed? If you have read "Moommy" then you have to read "Mommy's Day." It is just as suspenseful as the first book and the ending will positively shock you! Great book highly recommended. Hope Mr. Collins writes a third in the series.

The Babe
Released in DVD by Universal Studios (01 July, 2003)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Arthur Hiller
Starring: John Goodman
Average review score:

Best Baseball Flick
Yes, I know it's not 100% accurate and whatnot but it's still a great movie. I think this movie goes best with HBO's DVD bio on Babe Ruth.

My only gripe about this movie is that it's been a decade now and it's not on DVD yet! Tell Universal to wake up!

A fine well made film, which is Based on a True Story.
When he was a Orphan as a Child named Babe Ruth, he discover his hidden talent for the love of Baseball. When he turned Adult (John Goodman), he become unexpectedly a Baseball Legend.

In this film, which is surprisngly well made:an old-fashioned Hollywood-Style Bio-Pic. John Goodman hit a home run as Babe Ruth with his Amazing Performance. This movie has its grit and seeming no-holds-barred honesty. A memorable film, based on a True Fact. Directed by Arthur Hiller (Taking Care of Business). Grade:B+.

Reviewer Jeff Smith Nailed It
Jeff's review says it all about this movie. I thought it was well done in spite of some inaccuracies. But as John Goodman said when interviewed about it: "It's a movie, get a life".

The James Bond 007 Special Edition DVD Collection, Volume 3
Released in DVD by MGM/UA Video (18 November, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Sean Connery
Thunderball, Sean Connery's fourth excursion as 007, upped the Bond ante with the most ambitious adventure--and budget--to date, and turned out to be his most successful venture in the series. George Lazenby, a handsome Australian model with a self-effacing confidence, made his first and only appearance as James Bond in the underrated On Her Majesty's Secret Service, a witty and action-packed adventure that makes 007 history when Bond marries the girl (the lovely and talented Diana Rigg, fresh from her duties as the butt-kicking spy on the TV series The Avengers). Roger Moore brought an altogether lighter tone to 007 with Live and Let Die, softening Connery's rough edges with a more romantic persona as the films became even more exotic. Octopussy, a colorful cold war thriller and one of Moore's better outings, stars Louis Jourdan as a corrupt Afghan prince and Maud Adams (making her second Bond appearance) as the ringmaster of an all-babe traveling circus team that unknowingly carries a nuclear bomb. Christopher Walken hams it up under a platinum-blond hairdo while his Amazon bodyguard, Grace Jones, growls through A View to a Kill, a silly but often visually impressive adventure that made it obvious Moore was too old and stiff to carry on the Bond legacy. No such problem with Pierce Brosnan, whose fourth outing, Die Another Day paired him with sexy American agent Jinx (Halle Berry) to take on a genetically altered North Korean villain (Rick Yune) armed with a satellite capable of destroying just about anything.

Duplication of dvd in a series
I purchased The James Bond 007 Special Ed DVD Collection
Volume 1 and 2 from Amazon. Regretfully, Live and Let Die, On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Thunderball which were already part of previous collections are included again in Volume 3. I would not recommend buying the Vol 3 if you are collecting the James Bond Series.

The crappiest of the 3 bond sets. only ohmss is good
This dvd set has too many bad movies for it to sell as much as the other sets will. First of all, there are only six discs. Also, five dvds suck and one is GREAT. Not worth 60 dollars

Octopussy-although some do not like this movie at all,I must say I enjoyed it.(HIGHLY). Roger Moore is a better James bond when he was old then when he was young, although never as good as Dalton but better than the rest. John Barry's score is great and a relief after Bill Conti nearly messed up For your eyes only. Moore already had done much better. Check the part where Rog is climbing outside the Monsoon palace and he sees Prince Kamal Khan greet General Orlov, Great MUSIC!!!

On her majesty's secret service- This is in my three favorite Bonds section(along with For your eyes only and the living daylights). The story is GREAT and Telly Savales is the best Blofeld which after all is Bond's arch nemesis. This movie has an awesome score, Lots of great action and the story flows like water and does not EVER get boring, which some of Connery's previous ones do(like Thunderball). I cannot believe how many people have never heard of this movie or George Lazenby, MGM did to this movie what they did to CLOWNHOUSE, which was also a GREAT movie that is also highly underrated and deserves more respect

LIVE AND LET DIE- this is not a good movie in any way.It is cheesy like most of Roger Moore's movies. Everyone loves the title song but i hate it.Roger Moore is at his best-looking though. The only good thing about this movie is that Yaphet Kotto, who is suprisingly vicious and a great villian!!!

A view to A kill-If you are going to overload a dvd set with Roger Moore don't do it with his worst movies.(You might as well have put the man with the golden gun and moonraker in there too).
If you want a Bond set and good movies in it, then get Volume 2 which has Moonraker and For your eyes only, two good MOORE films but completely different. A view to a kill plain out sucks. There is no good action, no story, and ATROCIOUS acting. How could they let this movie be made, they should have straight out skipped directly to the living daylights and give Rog the final good movie that he deserves to end his legacy with. TRAGIC

THUNDERBALL-One of Connery's pretty good ones, GOOD score and great cast and locations, but the story needs a serious jumpstart. Connery really started to suck after this movie, but he is better than Brosnan ,at least. Sir Sean kicks some ass at the end of this one. His best line in it "can my friend rest, she's just dead". Terence Young was a great director to. This is the only good movie in this box set, except for Lazenby's.

Die another Day- THIS MOVIE is just plain out awful and does not deserve to be in same class as these other movies i reviewed that are far superior. Was i the only one who noticed that at the end they totally duplicated "The Living Daylights" when Brosnan does the same thing with a helicopter that Dalton does with the jeep and they copy Licence to Kill because Bond goes rogue. They also copy the end of Goldfinger by trying to make a tense airplane fight, but the cheesy special effects make this movie even that much worse. Halle Berry is a horrible Bond girl. I wish Bond would strangle her for information or feed her to some sharks, but I never got that. My father's girlfriend told me this was good? What is wrong with people today. No real tense action, all crap.
BUY the james bond collections volume 1 and 2 and buy ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE SEPARATELY, BECAUSE THE REST HERE SUCK!

A serious presentation for owning the collection
MGM offers a new chance for 007's fans to have the complete collection by presenting the complete collection in three sets (except Never Say Never Again, available at Amazon for $13).

I do not agree with various comments from other reviewers complaining about the bad marketing of MGM, since they have already presented the movies in singles and in three sets before. And by presenting them, once again, with improved quality and logic price in three packages, there is no harm at all.

What is beautiful in James Bond movies is the concept. The imminent illusion of the "non-reality" in all his movies is something comfortable to every potential viewer. No one would be offended by the unbreakable hotshot imperialist; timely, everybody would enjoy the sophistication, manners and cold-blood brutality of a professional spy (and gentleman) mastering the world and women' hearts.

There is always something new in every movie, the sequence of the incidents, the very well woven plots and the presentation of psycho genius personalities or pathetic authoritarian leaders or governments. All are offered in new ways, new places and from different points of view that would necessary put you in suspense. The British sense of humor and the mysterious touch added to the colors of the hero have a lot of show-off in comparison to American-made movies, where heroes are presented from reality and where "nobody care if you believe it or not".

My best movies are "Diamonds Are For Ever", "The Spy Who Loved Me" and "Die Another Day"; but I always have a reason to watch other titles for the 10th or 20th time (I already saw "Die Another Day" for three times).

Probably, it is the best collection ever made to date, so if you believe that action movies are an important part of real Cinema, and that real entertainment is a just aim of it, I believe that you are having a very good chance to have the best of it in a very reasonable price. I am personally grabbing the chance to replace my old VHS collection with this sophisticated DVD one, I started with the first set and I am buying the other two, one in every next month.

WWE Judgment Day 2003
Released in DVD by Sony Music (Video) (15 July, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Average review score:

Judgment Day? More like Insult Wrestling Day
There was nothing on this card that was worth watching

The first match is a five-minuete insult to the talents of Chris Benoit, John Cena, Rhyno, and Brian Kendrix

La Resistance vs Test and Scott Stiener, ANOTHER let-down of a match between four poor wrestlers.

Mr. America vs Roddy Piper: FOR THE LOVE OF MIKE, DON'T PUT PIPER IN ANOTHER MATCH, HE CANNOT PHYSICALLY DO IT

World Heavyweight Championship: Triple H vs Kevin Nash, This is'nt worth five stars, or ANY rating, Nash is a broken-down wreck and can't be carried by anyone, not even the equally crap Triple H, the DQ ending is an insult.

Intercontinetal Battle Royale: DUD, Christian's win was a nice little surpise, but the match itself was'nt great at all.

Fatal Four-Way for the Women's Title: Jazz vs Trish Stratus vs Victoria vs Jaqueline, a worthy match on the card, but only due to the incredible talent on the female RAW roster.

WWE Championship: Brock Lesner vs Big Show, this WAS a shcokingly good main event, Big Show has improved incredibly and his matches with Brock are often good, this had a great ending.

The card however, cna';t be saved by Brock Lesner vs Big Show, the decisions were horrible and the match times pathetic

Poor
The May PPV Judgment Day shows just what is wrong with WWE at the moment- stuff like A) not giving matches enough time, B) favouring feud-building, promos and storylines over actual wrestling, C) giving main event slots to the bigger, slower guys and burying the talented smaller guys in pointless feuds or on Velocity/Heat. I've been watching wrestling for 11 years and I'm sad to say that (despite an extensive and talented roster) this is the worst it's been for some time.

this was bad
Judgment Day 2003 was not good. The strecher match and the ladder match were the only two good matches. Matches like HHH vs. Kevin Nash and roddy piper vs. mr. america (hogan) are a disgrace. This was just a bad ppv.

The Worst Horror Film Ever
I seen this movie it is truely horrible. This is one of the worst b- movies I have ever seen. I recommended you not to rent or purchase this film. You will be very disappointed.

A great movie! One of my favorite 80's horror movies.
I'm obsessed with this movie! When i first saw it in the theatres back in the 80's, this movie was severely cut due to the graphic violence. I love everything about this movie, from the casting, to the location shots, to the storyline and acting. For those unfamilar with the Troma movies, Troma is a company that specializes in grade B horror/sci-fi exploitation flicks. Many of the Troma movies have a very dark and twisted sense of humor to them, in additon to the drama and suspense or horror. Mother's Day is no exception. The story is about three girls who were best friends in college, who go on yearly reunions where they camp in the woods. This time they have chosen to camp out in an area where a demented family of hillbilly rednecks are living. Mother is the head of this strange family. She is living with her two backwoods sons and schooling them in the art and specialty of attacking and rapeing and killing of young women. This whole premise sounds totally sick and demented, and it is....as only the Troma team can present it. You have to see this movie to believe how incredibly over-the-top it is. The performances are excellent, especially the two sons. They are both adults, but behave like children due to their backwards upbringing. All that these boys want to do is make their Mother proud and be the best killers possible. The chemistry and interaction between Mother and her two sons makes for fun viewing. Even the three girls who eventually get kidnapped give credible performances. A lot of the female victims in horror movies are disposable characters that you really don't care if they get killed off or not, but there's enough character development here that you'll find yourself caring about the girls in Mother's Day. The final climactic showdown scene between the girls and the sons is exciting and memorable, mostly for the creative use of weapons. The only cheesy part of that scene was when one of the girls was shown holding a television set over her head as a murder weapon. You'll have to suspend your disbelief on that one. I guess tv sets were really light way back then (i'm being sarcastic!).The dvd extras include commercials for other Troma films, a few comedy skits about Troma that are so-so, and other stuff about Troma Studios. The best extra has to be the director's commentary because it is one of the best i've heard for a grade B horror movie since the commentary for The Evil Dead. I learned so much trivia and interesting info on the making of Mother's Day from the commentary. Fans of the movie will love the commentary! This movie has elements of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Last House On The Left, and i highly recommend this movie if you're a fan. Please keep in mind that Mother's Day is a dark comedy horror movie. It IS a horror movie, there's no denying that, BUT there are enough elements of twisted dark comedy to it involving the personalities of the two sons and their interaction with each other that it reminds us we're not watching a totally serious horror movie such as The Exorcist. Mother's Day is not for everyone, and many of the reviewers here on Amazon have said it's the worst film they have ever seen, blah blah blah. Anyone who says that is not a true fan of Troma films because they obviously don't understand the genre. You'll need to watch more than one Troma film to understand that statement. Just watch the trailers for the other films on this dvd and you'll know what i mean. This movie is excellent and i'm glad to see the dvd is the director's cut with all the violence and gore that was cut from the theatrical print lovingly put back in. If you loved Motel Hell (and i DO!!), you'll love Mother's Day.

Outstanding Trash...Gotta Love It!!
I have seen this movie several times, the special FX are nothing more than [junk], the storyline is tolerable, and the acting is ridiculous. All in all a wonderful "B" Flick to sit down and sink your teeth into. Any reviewer that feels this movie has to be analysed to be death has too much time on his hands. This movie is what it is and that's all!! Just enjoy it for that simple reason.
I have enjoyed this movie for many years and will continue to enjoy it for many to come. I am still trying to get my hands on the unrated widescreen version (if there is one...)(fingers crossed!!).

The First Man into Space
Released in DVD by Image Entertainment (21 July, 1998)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Robert Day
Starring: Marshall Thompson and Marla Landi
The early reels of First Man into Space should delight fans of the Mercury/Sputnik era in rocket technology... though it may delight fans of low-budget '50s sci-fi even more. A small manned rocket, launched from a jet cruising at high altitude, manages to poke its nose up about 250 miles above the earth---thus making its cocky, reckless pilot the (you guessed it) first man into space. Unfortunately, weird cosmic debris clings to the spacecraft when it crash-lands, and also to the astronaut: he's now covered with a layer of scaly, sparkly space rock. To put it in technical terms, the returned pilot is categorized as "a great big lumbering deformed monster." He's lumbering around a rocket facility in New Mexico, and the monster-pilot's brother (played by the always sober, always reliable Marshall Thompson) must find the thing before it kills again. Oddly enough, once the cheesy space-flight FX wear off, First Man into Space turns into a competent and surprisingly thoughtful thriller; give this movie some points for at least trying to emphasize the science in its fiction. --Robert Horton

Well acted with a cool monster
When the First Man Into Space gets a cosmic dusting it does some strange things to his mind and body. Pretty good monster and a very good leading man, Marshall Thompson make for a better than average 50's genre sci-fi story. Close to a classic. There was some light speckling in the transfer but all in all the DVD played well and the sound ( Mono ) was acceptable.

GREAT FILM HAMPERED BY WEAK ENDING.
Let me first say,if not for the last ten minutes of this film I would have given this movie a five star rating and proclaimed it one of the all-time classics of 50's sci-fi.But because of poor execution in the finaly I am unable to give it my highest recommendation.

As for the rest of the picture,I was thoroughly pleased. From the cast to the spfx,it was apparent that the film-makers were doing there best to make a good film.

The cast is lead by Marshall Thompson;a veteran of 50's sci-fi;and other than a few moments of "gee whiz" delivery he turns in one of his best on-screen performances. The rest of the cast is solid as well. From the leads to the bit parts, everyone was adequate or better.

The spfx were effective and superior to what you would normally expect from this type of film. Also, the stock footage was seamlessly blended into the movie. As for the monster,it was actually very effective looking in the night time scenes. The first time you get a look at it coming through the bushes I was very impressed.Unfortanetly,it isnt nearly as frightening in the well-lit scenes. And who told the guy in the monster suit to walk around like he had ... in his pants?

Which brings me to the reason the ending disappointed me so much.In an effort to place their film above the pack, the movie makers attempted a more thoughtful ending rather than the typical "destroy the monster" ending. It just doesnt work because the monster looks so cheezy in the well-lit room its hard to forget your just seeing some actor in a rubber suit. Its also difficult to feel sorry for someone who killed so many innocent people, despite the extenuating circumstances.

Even though the ending was such a let down I still think this would be a solid addition to anyones sci-fi collection. ...you'll definetly be getting your moneys worth.

THE BEST
THIS MOVIE SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ME WHEN I SAW IT IN THE MOVIES IN THE BRONX NY ,WHEN I WAS EIGHT YRS OLD.I HAD NIGHTMARES FOR A WEEK. THE PART WHEN HE COMES THRU THE BUSHES I FELL OFF MY SEAT.BLACK AN WHITE FILMING MADE IT EVEN BETTER.THIS IS A MUST HAVE.
