Who is Helen Slater?
This movie is so awful I don't even know where to begin. OK. Let me start. First of all, who is this so called Helen Slater who delivers this awful poor performance in this movie. She plays this woman who recently became blind and began dating Eric (Andrew McCarthy). Slater who plays the character of Carley delivers a performance that is sooo predicable and just plain boring. This movie is so unrealistic that I don'e believe it should have ever been made into a movie. Eric played by Andrew McCarthy of course was great, even though I don't think Andrew McCarthy is very convincing playing the bad guy. Who would believe he would be the bad guy in this movie, after looking into his baby blue sparkleing eyes. Now don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Andrew but this part just was not, and I stress not right for him. Overall I do not reccommend this movie to anyone who is an Andrew McCarthy fan. If you are don't see this movie because you'll be highly disappointed. Besides he only came out in the movie for a total of about 20 minutes. Before spending 12.99 + tax, rent it first. The only reason I gave this crappily made movie two stars was because Andrew McCarthy appeared in it, not for the movie it self. Sorry, but the truth hurts.

Remake of the Classic "Wait Until Dark"
Modern remake of the Classic "Wait Until Dark", pits Helen Slater against 2 psychotic killers.

As in the original, the lead is a woman newly blinded and having trouble adjusting to a world without vision. The brightest spots in Carly's life are her relationship with her lover, Eric, and the new loft they move into in the deserted warehouse district. Not surprisingly, one evening when Eric is away two parolee's break into the apartment and hold Carly hostage hoping to extract the combination to a safe full of diamonds from her. While a few others try and help, inevitably, Carly finds that the only person she can truly depend on is herself.

This was an OK updating of the classic movie with Audrey Hepburn, but to be honest that movie was so good I wonder why anyone would re-do it. Frankly too much material leads up to the home invasion espcially the criminals hstalking their hapless victim unseen. It doesn't add to the plot and the characters are thinly drawn enough to not need too much on-screen time to show us their motivation. A tighter story that focused on the lead would have worked much better.

I thought the acting was good and that Helen Slater does a great job as the defensless woman who discoves her inner strengh. I also really liked the nice job of forshadowing by having her practice Braille on a quote from Shakespere's Sonnet 94 "sweetest things turn sourest by their deeds".

This was a an OK movie but it suffers by comparison to such a classic as "Wait Until Dark". I have the DVD but there were no special features on it so the VHS would be just as good.

Slater is excellent, as usual.
Helen Slater has always been one of my favorite actress and I must admit she was the reason I bought this movie. As usual, she didn't disappoint me, playing an amazingly convincing blind woman. She also writes and sings "detour", the main song of the movie: excellent! How come she never released an album?

As for the movie itself... Well, it's not a bad story; but there's nothing really unpredictable in it and the two bad guys are way too caricatural.

The DVD edition has no feature at all, not even a chapter menu.

VERY MEDIOCRE HORROR MOVIE
A MAN [ISAIAH WASHINGTON] BEFRIENDS A PACK OF KILLER RATS. AFTER HIS BROTHER IS KILLED, HE USES THE RATS TO GO ON A KILLING SPREE. THE TALENT THAT THIS FILM HAS IS BASICALLY WASTED. THE PLOT IS JUST STUPID AND THE MOVIE IS JUST BORING AT TIMES. ICE-T BREATHES SOME MUCH-NEEDED LIFE INTO THIS MOVIE AS A RENT COLLECTOR. THE MAIN PROBLEM WITH THIS MOVIE IS THAT WELL, IT'S JUST BORING. THOUGH THIS IS MEDIOCRE, I HAVE SEEN MUCH WORSE HORROR MOVIES ABOUT KILLER RATS THAN THIS. YOU'RE BETTER OFF WITH A RENTAL ON THIS ONE. DON'T BUY THIS.

Not a great movie but excellent score.
The movie wasn't great but I enjoyed it. I was really impressed by the score. Very cool percussive textures,screeching/wailing guitars.

Ultimate Writer's Cramp
Once again Imax has tried to combine a story with spectacular photography. I would think by know I would have learn my lesson. But you mention the word Imax combine with the Grand Canyon,Lake Powell and aerial photography I took the bait. This story is so simple that it takes away from the film. I feel if you do not have an interesting story to tell why try. Instead of going the educational or thrill route they went with a story that was hard to get through once let alone twice. Why Imax could settle for a plot like this when they are consistently A+ in the photo and sound department is a wonder to me. There standards can be so high on one end and at the bottom of the scale on the other. Imax has produce quite a few good films. But for my money those are films that are educatonal or have thrilling photography. This film has some of the photography but it allso has a story that will put you to sleep.

at least the 3-D is good...
Rating this on the movie alone, I would give it only 1 star. It's a bad story and really boring. I only purchased it to see the 3-D version, using the special glasses that you must buy seperate. The 3-D effect is really good. Not as fully dimentional as the other DVD's available for the 3-D system, but still works very well. As with the other three 3-D Slingshot DVD's available, the sound is really good too.
Overall, the movie itself is poor, but the visuals (in 3-D) and the sound (DTS) is very good. I would recommend checking out the Ultimate 3-D Collection (which includes the glasses and the three other 3-D DVD's, that is listed at Amazon.com) before purchasing Ultimate G's.

Attention Shoppers
Released in DVD by Mgm/Ua Studios (07 October, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Philip Charles MacKenzie
Nestor Carbonell, a supporting actor on the sitcom Suddenly Susan, wrote and stars in Attention Shoppers, about a day in the life of a supporting actor on a mediocre sitcom. After a night of fighting with his wife, he leaves to make an appearance at the opening of a K-Mart in Houston. His limo driver in L.A. criticizes the authenticity of his character's accent; on the plane, he gets recognized as "that guy ... on that show"; he meets a soap opera star (played by Luke Perry from Beverly Hills 90210) who talks about the philosophy of Nietzsche and the movie Scarface; and when he arrives at the K-Mart, the entire appearance is a bust. He even gets beaten up by some local toughs. As a story, there's not much to it, but what rescues Attention Shoppers is the authentic texture of Carbonell's experiences as a minor celebrity. There's no vanity to either the script or his performance. If anything, he's ruthless in depicting his own need for attention and the indignities that result from it. At best, he learns a little humility by the end of things, and maybe that's all anyone can hope for. Attention Shoppers features some sharp cameos from Martin Mull, Kathy Najimy, Casey Affleck, and particularly Lin Shaye, who's best known for her comically frightening roles in Kingpin and There's Something About Mary. Her appearance as an offended fan of the sitcom's leading man is one of the high points of Attention Shoppers. --Bret Fetzer

Worse than I thought it would be
The subject line says it all. Don't go there!

bad bad bad bad bad
By far the worst movie I have ever seen. I was physicially painful to finish it. I feel cheated over the loss of 2 hours of my life.

The worst film I have ever seen.
I can't believe this film ever got made. I cringe every time I see it in a video store. I'd like to sue the producers to get something for the couple of hours of my life I spent on this.

Summary: I'd give it zero stars but it won't let me.

The Rowdy Girls
Released in DVD by Troma (25 April, 2000)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Steve Nevius
Average review score:

A Must See For Men Who Love Big Breasts
There's an unwritten rule that all movie fans know: If you see the name Shannon Tweed in a movie's credits (she also co-produced this one) the movie will be garbage. Sure, you're guaranteed there'll be scenes of gratuitous nudity, but the movie itself will stink worse than Mickey Rourke after an all night bender.
THE ROWDY GIRLS is basically Troma's attempt to make a soft porn western, as the video slick says "Careful not to shoot your load!" Clever.
The plot: A prostitute and an unhappy bride (both Playmates) liberate themselves in the Wild West 1886; but are taken captive by another liberated, big breasted woman (Playmate) and her posse. After that not a lot happens, except this awful country-western balladeer keeps popping up for no discernable reason. ROWDY GIRLS also features the daftest clmactic shootout your'e ever likely to see.
Obviously this is not one of Troma's best, but they have made far worse (like FEMME FONTAINE and DEMENTED DEATH FARM MASSACRE which I also recommend for guys who like big breasts). I just hope (again) there's no sequel in the works. Actually Shannon Tweed's acting is OK in this, which is a big surprise. Still it could have been worse. It could have starred Ron Jeremy and Divine.

Lousy simulated sex at best
I have to say I was extremely disappointed in this movie. If you buyers out there are expecting to see great sex scenes from 3 former Playboy playmates, don't waste your money here. While I was a little amused at seeing Shannon Tweed nude, the acting in this movie was just horrible. There was no plot and it seemed like the lines to the movie were strung together by a high school play director. Miss Deanna Brooks couldn't act her way out of a shoe box, and what little nudity we see of her isn't enough to hide her acting skills. Her simulated sex scenes were a joke, which are surprising considering she used to be a nude dancer. You couldn't tell it here. I also wasn't impressed with Julie Strain's role as I have definitely seen her in better movies, and this seemed to have been a somewhat less than stellar career move for her. This movie looks like it was put together in less than a day for a shoestring budget. Don't waste your time watching this, and for sure don't buy it. I have a feeling we will be seeing some of these actors in a grocery store checkout line asking us if we want paper or plastic soon.

Not at all rowdy enough
A very disappointing effort at creating a sexy western action spoof. The producers put tall former Playmate Of The Year/B-Movie star Shannon Tweed (good girl) and tall former Penthouse Pet of The Year/B-Movie star Julie Strain (bad girl) together in a western setup, and somehow fail to exploit this casting coup. Next to no face-to-face rivalry between these two, and at times Tweed and Strain seem to be playing in two different films, shooting on two separate sets. The two might have been paired in a sexy girl/girl scene, or certainly set against each other in a catfight parody of the Old West showdown. But neither possibility is explored--- haven't the producers learned the true meaning of the word "Exploitation"?? Film is competently made, but has no real raunchiness or gusto to its concept. A golden opportunity wasted.

MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: David Marsh

Erotic only to the ultra-suppressed
To find this slow-paced film "erotic", you'd have to have been recently released from some Middle East sexually-repressed regime. It seems aimed towards over-40 Bible Belt types. (...)

Should Be Swept Away
Scenario: Friend wanted a movie with sex and I wanted a horror movie. Compromise: Stormswept...supposed to be erotic horror
Result: We were both disappointed...very disappointed.
The basic premise of the movie is that a group of people end up in a creepy old mansion which is haunted by a ghost that periodically takes over members of the group and thereby causes them to get extremely horny. Sounds intriguing but it is absolutely awful!!! This is as scary as a Disney movie...aside from the creepy house, nothing is remotely frightening. The erotic/sex part of the movie is anything but erotic or even arousing. The picture quality is bad, the acting is worse, and the plot is the worst. Stay away from this wretched flick!!!

More erotic than horrifying.
This movie is interesting in the moods that it sets for the viewer. Several people end up staying in a mansion to ride out a storm. Meanwhile, they are sequentially possessed by a spirit that makes them horny. Best looking collection of babes I've seen in a long time. Acting not as bad as expected, actually it's pretty good. My wife loved this movie. The horror elements are barely noticable, but I didn't mind because it more than makes up for what it lacks. After seeing mine a girlfriend of ours had me order her a copy. The only thing bringing this down from 5 stars is the video and audio are both a little below average but the movie is great erotic mindless entertainment. Highly recommended to the right audience.

Stalled
Released in DVD by New Concorde Home En (04 November, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Stefan Haves
Average review score:

One Word....Awful!!!
This dvd was absolutely NOT worth the $5.00 rental fee!! Judging by the back cover it appeared to be a funny movie.Boy,was I wrong!! It had no real plot line, the actors didn't really show any talent, and the "humor" (if you can call it that) was not real comedy. This is definitely on my list of worst movies I've ever seen.Don't buy it!!!Don't rent it!! Don't even borrow it from a friend!! It's not worth the time or money!!!

Not worth the rental, don't waste your time
I actually rate this movie a big fat "0". The plot was very weak and the characters were even weaker. I can't recall laughing once through the whole movie. The "I'm stupid white trash from the south" humor was just not funny. I'm still trying to figure out why this movie was made. It was pointless from the very beginning.

Unfortunate cover hides interesting film
This is a much better film than it's been marketed as, and unfortunately those judging by its cover will probably be disappointed. "Stalled" is not a romping, down-south, hillbilly comedy. It's actually an intricate ensemble piece, juggling a number of engaging and bittersweet plot threads. The result is far from perfect and sometimes a bit dragged out, yet each plot does cash out satisfactorily.

Where does one begin? The cover tells the more prominent story: a touring band from Chicago is stranded in the small town of Hereabouts until their van can be repaired. They are put up for the night by the family of Len, Lacy, and their daughter Sheri. Sheri pines to escape Hereabouts and see the world, and the band is her big ticket out. In the background is Pat, the filthy local mechanic, who has eyes for Sheri. The band, meanwhile, is coping with the drug habits of their lead singer Dave (whose foul mouth alone earns the film a solid "R" rating). The band's romantic couple, Ross and Joy, are on the verge of breaking up, causing further strains. And their bass player, Brendon, is the first target for Sheri to carry her away on their tour.

Alongside all of this is the town's stripper, Leanne, who also desires to escape Hereabouts. Her eyes are set on a traveling salesman, Ward, who is too obsessive-compulsive for his own job. Keeping him sane is his daughter, who is losing her innocence to the dark secrets of her mother.

It's a large number of characters to follow, yet the film manages to give each character's story due attention. By the time "Stalled" is over, you'll discover the secret that every character carries with them. And while there were numerous opportunities for Hollywood endings, the movie has the guts to follow its own lead. This rarity in itself is what makes "Stalled" a movie worth checking out.

Janacek - Kat'a Kabanova / Davis, Gustafson, Palmer, Glyndebourne Opera
Released in DVD by Kultur (26 March, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Derek Bailey
Kát'a Kabanová, Leos Janácek's 1921 tragedy, is proof if any were needed that tales of personal oppression and turmoil will always make fine raw material for opera composers. Janácek took Ostrovsky's tumultuous drama of infidelity, The Storm, and created a compelling piece in which his music heightens the relationship between the troubled landscape of the heroine's inner mind and the elements doing battle outside.

In 100 minutes of intensely emotional operatic drama, this 1988 Glyndebourne Festival production successfully captures Kabanová's wretched journey from put-upon wife and daughter-in-law to suicide via the ecstasy of a forbidden love affair. At its heart, Janácek's unique tonal score underlines a powerful, almost naturalistic dialogue and exposes the impact of the experiences of Kát'a on her escalating self-destruction. Felicity Palmer's Kabanicha--the mother-in-law from hell and the real instrument of Kabanová's downfall--is curiously remote and muted rather than the domineering figure of fear that we might expect. But the singing, particularly by Nancy Gustafson (tremendously affecting and emotionally convincing in the title role) and Ryland Davies as Kabanová's weak husband Tichon, is outstanding. Gustafson's performance alone makes this essential viewing for anybody with a passion for the great modern soprano roles. --Piers Ford

Average review score:

OK at Best
This production of Katya Kabanova is OK, but not much more than that. It has respectable singers, especially in Nancy Gustafson and Felicity Palmer, but they appear bloodless and dull, and the orchestra, as another reviewer has pointed out, has faded into the background. Add this to Glyndebourne's totally non-descript sets and costumes, and you get something that's sort of dull. Also, there are some cuts from Janacek's original score, which is absolutely unfathomable in an opera that doesn't run for an hour and a half in its full version

A much better choice is the Salzburg Festival DVD of this opera by TDK. First, the negatives: it's one of those productions by a European director who thinks that Janacek would have done it this way if only he had just been as clever as the director. It's set not on the banks of the Volga, but in the courtyard of a Soviet-era apartment building somewhere in Eastern Europe. There are a few distractors: a non-singing drunk/demented person (take your choice) who is on-stage all the time; a broken fountain that substitutes for the Volga; the Kabanicha's room perpetually open onto the stage, and so on.

However, the positives far outweigh the negatives. Angela Denoke is incandescent as Katya. The entire supporting cast beats the Glyndebourne cast, one-on-one, hands down. Dagmar Peckova (Varvara) and Rainer Trost (Kudryas) elevate their roles through their artistry to primario status. The orchestra(the Czech Philharmonic, Sylvain Cambreling conducting) is clear and powerful, and well-balanced with the singers. Worst case, you can turn off the picture and just listen to it.

I got my copy of this version of KK from the Royal Opera's website (Region 0 encoded). ...

Where's the orchestra?
Listening to this over high fidelity stereo loudspeakers, I found this video largely unsatisfying. It's pleasant to look at, and the singing is fine. The main problem is the balance. The orchestra is much too far in the background, as if the engineers mistakenly considered it to be accompaniment to the singing. As a result the spectacularly colored orchestrations, the harmony, and much of the DRAMA (!) of this work are lost in this video. In short, musically it makes no sense...except for a number of scattered moments when the beautiful sound of the music is discernible. I suspect that this was a good performance, badly recorded or engineered.

musically interesting, but very cold staging
The cold and abstract staging here is clearly meant to reflect the suffocating world of the title character, but two hours of it becomes very disagreable. Better get the CD version: the music is gorgeous and there is no distraction from the intensity of the music.

Body Strokes
Released in DVD by Simitar Video (07 April, 1998)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Edward Holzman
Average review score:

Good Couple's video. Little heat. Nothing to crow about!
One hot looking girl and the other 3 were average. Probably a good rental flick.

Made in 1995 this film is showing it's age. This film wasn't rated. Mostly topless scenes with nothing explicit. Nothing you couldn't see on cable. An PG-17 rating would be a better fit.

Gave it 2 stars for the storyline not for the sexiness (lack thereof). Camera tends to pan too quickly and closeups are too brief. Edward Holzman has made better movies like "I Like to Play Games Too" which is way-hot. I thought this would have the intensity of that, but alas it pales in comparison.

Good for a night out with your girlfriend.

Sorry, was this the VHS version?
I know small companies will never be able to technically match big ones like Dreamworks, 20th Century Fox etc. but they could at least make some effort.

"Body Strokes" looks, for all it's worth, like a bad copy of a VHS tape. The film is blurry, the colours are smeared and washed out. Overall picture quality is horrible.

Sound is your basic stereo, and there are no extras on the disk, but it was the lousiness of the picture that got me the most. I should have bought the VHS version...
