ZOE
I'm from germany and don't know the original versions in english. It's difficult to get the uncut versions in germany (german language!!!). But I KNOW that the movie isn't called "killing zone". It's called "killing zoe". "zoe" ist a prostitute and one of the main charackters of the movie. Hope that someone will correct that misstake.

best regards

PS: very nice movies......if you like Tarantino

3 Crime Thrillers which Serve there Purpose.
Reservoir Dogs: 5 Stars, the Perfect Crime Thriller. The Greatest directorial debut of All Time (yes, better than Citizen Kane) and, simply put, one of the Greatest movies of All Time.

Suicide Kings: 4 Stars, Highly Underated thriller that deserves to be more Widely Seen (as does a lot of Sean Patrick Flannery's work eg. "Body Shots" and "The Boondock Saints"). Exception cast make a good film Great.

Killing Zoe: 3 stars, a downer but still efective. Eric Stoltz and Julie Delpy can make Anything watchable.

In Conclusion, 3 very worthy thrillers to add to Any Self Respecting movie fans collection.

For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf (Broadway Theatre Archive)
Released in DVD by Kultur (30 April, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Oz Scott
This video, from the Broadway Theater Archive of PBS's New York affiliate, WNET, offers an imaginative, if occasionally heavy-handed, television adaptation of Ntozake Shange's poetic theater piece. Originally staged at the Public Theater in New York, this 1982 production is directed by Oz Scott, who transforms what were a series of feminine monologues about the black woman's struggle to find her place in a man's world. What Shange's language conjures by itself onstage, Scott helps visualize on video, a proposition that misses as often as it hits. Language about boyfriends isn't made clearer or more vital by showing us who's being talked about. But the overproduction can't strip Shange's language of its juicy richness--and it is offered with power and humor by a cast that includes then-fledgling actresses Lynn Whitfield and Alfre Woodard as well as Shange herself. --Marshall Fine

An incredible piece of artistry...
I had the distinct pleasure of actually viewing this work while it was on Broadway. It was presented with such grace and impressionism that the messages contained therein have remained lucid in my mind for over 20 years. I was a mere teen at the time, and in early adulthood, I finally read the book. I can remember my Mom reading it after me and remarking how if she'd known the language was so strong, she may not have allowed me to see it at the theatre. However, it has been my experience that strong individuals have to use only the strongest and effective means when communicating "the" message. Although I have not yet viewed the video, I am sure that the focus couldn't have diminished much from it's origin as impeccable works of art only get better with time. Hats off to Sister Shange for keeping it real...even way back then!!

real life
this is a "must see" for every sister.

A BURLESQUE ON VIOLENCE AND CRIME/ HILARIOUS *****
This very entertaining, independent humourous action film could have been the suprise hit of the Summer of 2003 if any of the major studios had the cojones to put it in 3,000 theaters nationwide!

The plot revolves around the humorous misadventures of a hapless valet (Dale Paris) and a dangerous blonde(Beautiful and Sexy Angel Boris), co-starring a cast of colorful oddball chracters- Pepo and His Gang - Dogbreath (Bob Deacon a regular on the new hit TV series "Karen Cisco" = Achmed The Convenience Store Clerk = Skinnyman = Mr.Lovaglio (played by Mr. Schnozzercam himself "WIllie Blanco") = The Scorpian = and a 1971 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible, ( which is currently for sale and advertised at the end of the credits ). One of the best directorial debuts by director Edwardo Carrillo since Robert Rodriguez's "El Mariachi". A brilliantly humorous performance by Tony Pachecho, as the lead Latin Gangster " Pepo Duran ", and his three Marx Brotherish cohorts. Has the potential to become a "Cult Classic". Some cool extras check out "Behind The Blonde" on the DVD. The more times you watch this film the better it gets. A gem in the ruff. A very unconventional Love Story. Highly reccommended. Colorful, Action filled, humourous, offbeat and very entertaining. Check It Out !

Suicide Kings
Released in DVD by Artisan Entertainment (20 February, 2001)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Peter O'Fallon
Starring: Christopher Walken, Denis Leary, and Sean Patrick Flanery
Here's another gritty independent film that tries to invade Tarantino territory by casting Christopher Walken--that most reliable of indie-film actors--as a Mobster who gets chummy with a group of preppie-like young men and becomes the victim of a kidnapping scheme. One of the kidnappers (Henry Thomas) has a sister who's been abducted by another group of kidnappers, and they've bagged Walken for his Mob connections and negotiating power. What follows is a game of psychological strategy in which the desperate group of guys slowly lose their advantage to the smarter, more experienced gangster--even though they've got Walken tied to a chair. The situation turns volatile when the young men start to doubt the wisdom of their strategy and suspect betrayal within the group, and Suicide Kings turns into a talky, repetitious thriller only partially redeemed by Denis Leary's cagey role as Walken's Mob lieutenant. The movie's a showcase for its cast of rising talent (including Jay Mohr, Jeremy Sisto, Johnny Galecki, and Sean Patrick Flanery), but not even Walken can hold it all together. What's best about the film is Leary's sinister presence in a peripheral role and Walken's trademark villainy, here toned down to a steady, simmering menace. --Jeff Shannon

The best Christopher Walken movie ever?
I saw this movie on cable a few years ago and was absolutely floored by it...couldn't understand how it never made any kind of a splash in the theatres (it was only upon the director's commentary track wherein the the complications involving distribution due to the insolvency issues surrounding the movie's original distributors that this became clear).

What we have here is a crime conspiracy mystery/potboiler the caliber of "The Usual Suspects" that features a spectacular ensemble cast of young male actors, offset by good veteran character actors (including Denis Leary, executing a terrific turn as the Cam Neely of bodyguards/hitmen, having as much a heart of gold as a vicious mean streak). But of course the thing that really makes this movie go is Christopher Walken, as effective in this role as any he's ever held. You could almost believe his role is an older, somewhat more mellow version of the mob caporegime he portrayed in 1993's "True Romance", longsince having made it to full boss and retirement to respectability. The plot revolves around his kidnapping by the aforementioned youthful ensemble cast in an attempt to cash in on a kidnapping/ransom scheme; the fact that Walken spends most of the movie taped to a chair and bleeding profusely, yet still unquestionably maintains the upper hand within his situation and exudes the air of pure menace only lends further testimony to Walken's stature as one of the finest actors of our time, often relegated to the status of cult films icon and undercredited for the sheer magnificence of his ability (it is easy to forget that his performance in the now 25-year old "The Deer Hunter" warranted him the Oscar for "Best Supporting Actor", after all).

The plot resolution is not necessarily new and can be easily enough fleshed out at the first viewing if you're more inclined to spend your time solving the mystery as opposed to just enjoying the actors' performances, but it still detracts in no way from this extremely stylish movie involving a very fluid and fast-paced narrative interspersed with several flashback sequences dating back from a period of several days to twenty-something years. The only disappointing aspect of this movie in my view was that Jay Mohr was not given the chance to further immortalize his own brilliant and hilarious imitation of Christopher Walken in the final print; how could this movie have been made without exploiting that obvious comedic opportunity?

Best movie I have seen lately
This action packed movie was done extremely well. Worth watching over and over!!

Honorable Hoods & Depraved Rich Kids
A great guy's flic. A great little study of male character. Leary's sardonic cruelty as a gangster "button" is nicely balanced with his gritty heroism towards the vulnerable (cf. scenes with the "busket" man and the hostess' abusive stepdad). Walken plays a retired don who, with humor and humility, has a heart for damsels in distress and sympathy for scheming, but pathetic prep boys trying to be bad-asses. The ex-godfather exudes this avuncular, Jedi-like street-wisdom that's hard to swallow as reality but is entertaining to watch, but only cuz it's Walken. The film doesn't try to sugar-coat anyone's criminality, but it admirably explores the place of honor among thieves and the capacity for moral vapidity among the suburban elite. It appears ruthlessness and compassion aren't so incompatible after all. Such morality plays are what make this film interesting. It also does a great job of probing male roles, friendship, and trust.

Great showcase performances most of the characters. Galicki as the wet-behind-the-ears Ira and Jay Mohr as the smart-mouthed control-freak were fabulous. Henry Thomas was solid but not stellar (more the script's fault than his acting). The set designs and script make this film feel like an on-stage drama. Fine balance of tragedy and comedy.

The audio quality is very poor for a DVD, but tolerable, especially considering the basement price. ...

Double Suicide - Criterion Collection
Released in DVD by Criterion Collection (22 August, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Masahiro Shinoda

MEN IN BLACK
Come on, raiders of unusual images, Masahiro Shinoda's DOUBLE SUICIDE is a movie for you. Shot in black and white in 1969, this Criterion release will satisfy your delicate taste deceived by the clichés Hollywood serves you by the dozen each week of the year. In DOUBLE SUICIDE, one and only actress plays the two main feminine characters and, believe me or not, I didn't notice it until the end of the movie. Adapted from a 1720 ( ! ) japanese doll drama, DOUBLE SUICIDE relates the tragic love story of a courtesan and a paper merchant. The establishment, symbolized in the movie by the family and the moral code of the bourgeoisie, will lead the two lovers to take a dramatic decision.

The story is melodramatic but Masahiro Shinoda's cinematography transforms this simple story into a universal drama by adding a prologue and an epilogue that I let you discover by yourselves. Another interesting idea from the director is to imagine that the men who traditionally handle the puppets would appear on the screen. Invisible for the characters, these men dressed in black will cross the path of the heroes and become for us a symbol of the Fate that doesn't leave the slightest chance to the unfortunate lovers.

I don't recommend this movie to those of you who are not familiar with japanese movies but I'm sure that the curious ones will appreciate DOUBLE SUICIDE and its stunning cinematography. Superb copy with only a Claire Johnston essay as bonus feature.

A DVD zone rising sun.

A gift to life and cinema
With the barrage of bad summer films it pleased me to no end to view Criterion's issue of Masahiro Shinoda's Double Suicide. For many years I have been attracted to the well-known image of the two dead lovers lying side by side but had not actually seen the film. Prior to viewing the DVD I rented the early VHS release. The transfer was dull and murky. It's as if the video format was intent on hiding the beauty of this film. Criterion's DVD is like a shining light in a dark void. The disc is absolutely beautiful. Toichiro Narushima's stark photography is crisp and sharp. One can even see the faces behind the kurango's sheer black veils. The clear soundtrack does justice to Toru Takemitsu's haunting score. The English subtitles are enhanced and easy to read. The disc does not come with any extras (which explains my 4 star rating instead of 5). But it does come with an informative essay by Claire Johnston. She confirmed my thoughts about many of the films details and filled in what I did not know. It's rare that one sees a film as inventive and beautiful as Double Suicide. I urge all interested film lovers to seek out this DVD.

Stunning
A number of reviewers of Criterion discs have commented that it's too bad that some of their discs have lots of extras while some (such as Double Suicide) have none.

My response is to judge the film on its own merits. If it weren't for Criterion, I probably never would have heard of this film, and I certainly never would have seen such a luminous transfer. The film is beautiful and strange, and warrants multiple viewings.

Critics of the lack of extras should also note that the more "bare-bones" Criterion discs are priced less than the fully-packed ones.

I think Criterion did a really great job with this wonderful film.

It's a puzzlement
I find it interesting that Amazon and IMDb are both running rave customer reviews of this movie in contrast to Netflix.com, the online DVD rental company, whose customer-reviews are unanimously scathing. And with good reason. I saw this on DVD, and because I have a friend who's a budding filmmaker, I tried to think of something encouraging to say about this amateurish debacle. Best I could do was--concept: fine; execution (double entendre intended): DOA.

My Sweet Suicide
This movie suprised me with its intriguing cast of characters. Although it is obvious that production costs were low, each cast member portrayed a love of their craft and put their hearts into this production. I see a future in all of the actors.

The story itself is heartwarming and fun. It lifts my spirits and keeps me laughing every time I watch. It is a good escape for me. I recommend it to anyone who has ever felt depressed about lifes circumstances.

Everyone can enjoy this movie!
I was browsing through film titles one day and stumbed across this one..I decided to go for it and watched it that night..Needless to say, it was a great movie..It made me want to cry, but I believe I was able to hold back because of all the laughing I did..My boyfriend and I really thought this was a great uplifter.
