If you are getting 1 - This is it
After a 20 year absence from drumming.. i bought a drum set.. put it together and started playing. I ordered this dvd a few weeks later. Well the first thing I did after watching him set up the drums was take apart my drums and fix what i had done wrong.

As far as playing.. Ive checked hundred of web sites, downloaded lessons, and purchased 4 other DVD's to learn.. This is the best BY FAR. Several good fills, grooves to jam to.. its great. I never write reviews on stuff I get from amazon.. but had to give praise.. Buy many, you can't learn to much, but if you are just getting 1, get this one.. if you're buying many.. this is a must have.

Great DVD.

Amazing...a must buy for beginners
This is THE single video/DVD to buy for beginning drums. Tommy is an unbelievable musician, teacher, role model...everything! This video far surpasses all the other beginner videos out there. Parents if you're thinking of buying a drumming video for your child, this is the one to get.

Thanks Tommy for everything.

If You Want To Have Fun Learning The Drums..Get This DVD
My husband has been a drummer for 20 years.
I have always wanted to learn to play the drums, and have tried several times(with no luck).
My husband gave me The Getting Started DVD by Tommy Igoe.
I LOVE the DVD. Tommy is a great instructer. His DVD motivated me and gave me confidence to give it another try.
The DVD is very user friendly. It's also informative in a fun and relaxed way.
The DVD has also been helpful for my husband in teaching me.
I look forward to more drum DVD's by Tommy Igoe.

George Carlin - Playing with Your Head
Released in DVD by Mpi Media Group (28 January, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Rocco Urbisci
Observational humor had been George Carlin's specialty for over 20 years when Playing with Your Head--the comedian's fifth special for HBO--was recorded in 1986. Carlin's not resting on his laurels here, presenting an abundance of new, politically incorrect material while expanding a few older routines. In "Sports" he applies hilarious criteria to what does or doesn't qualify (hockey doesn't count; lacrosse is a "faggot college activity"), and "A Moment of Silence" pays mock-mournful tribute to an ill-fated (and presumably fictional) group of "43 elderly, mentally retarded Bolivian senior citizen volleyball fans." If that kind of irreverence puts you off (and if so, why are you reading this?), you'll fare better with the universal humor of "Losing Things" (we all do it, right?), and a characteristic survey of language in "Hello and Goodbye." In any case, Carlin's best enjoyed when seen and heard, and the film noir spoof "The Envelope" provides a clever introduction to the funnyman's entrance onstage. --Jeff Shannon

A good routine, a good audience......
This show, George Carlin's fifth HBO stand-up concert special, was taped at Beverly Theater, Beverly Hills, California May 2-3, 1986. Includes "Hello-Goodbye," "It's Not a Sport," which is a modified sport routine, much like "Baseball and Football", "Losing Things" which is hilarious, and a short film-noir spoof, "The Envelope," featuring George as private eye Mike Holder.

The Cliburn - Playing on the Edge
Released in DVD by Harmonia Mundi (Fra) (11 December, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: James Conlon

EXTRAORDINARY PERFORMANCES AND DOCUMENTARY
THIS DVD IS GREAT. IT GIVES A GOOD LOOK INTO THE LIVES OF THE CONTESTANTS DURING THE VAN CLIBURN PIANO COMPETITION. THE BONUS FEATURE PERFORMANCES ARE EXQUISITE. OLGA KERN IS MAGNIFICENT WITH RACHMANINOFF'S 3RD PIANO CONCERTO AND STANISLAV IOUDENICH IS GREAT WITH TCHAIKOVSKY'S 1ST PIANO CONCERTO.

Praise for Olga Korn
I searched out this DVD after seeing the last portion of it on a PBS broadcast. I love it BECAUSE of the facial expressions and body contortions which Olga Korn contributes to her performance-- for me it enhances and does not subtract from the enjoyment of the music.

Great Video
The documentary is excellent, but the best part is Stanislaw Ioudenitch playing the Tchiakovsky concerto in its entirety. Amazing virtuosity!
I orginally bought this video because I am a major fan of the Rachmaninoff concerto, but I was very dissapointed by Olga Kern's performance; not so much by the way she plays the piece, but by her facial expressions which have caused me to skip through all of the footage of her playing.

The documentary side of the disc has some GREAT footage, although none of it is full footage. For example there is a great 2 min clip of Ioudenitch playing Liszt's Hungarian rhapsody no 6, but all they show is the last 2 minutes with all the quick octaves, which is fine, but it would be nice to see full footage for sure.
Otherwise, Great DVD!

Playing by Heart
Released in DVD by Miramax Home Entertainment (04 February, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Willard Carroll
Starring: Gillian Anderson, Ellen Burstyn, Sean Connery, Anthony Edwards, Angelina Jolie, Jay Mohr, Ryan Phillippe, Dennis Quaid, and Gena Rowlands
This amiably amorphous comedy-drama about a myriad of articulate and witty people pondering the meaning of love was originally titled Dancing About Architecture. As one of the lovelorn puts it, in trying to explain the elusive nature of desire, "Talking about love is like dancing about architecture." However, with the way the characters in Willard Carroll's film talk, it sounds like they could dance a samba around Frank Lloyd Wright. This undiscovered gem doesn't have a particular destination in mind, as it weaves in and out of the stories of its high-profile ensemble, but it does offer some hilarious, sharp dialogue and quiet surprises. Carroll focuses his film on four couples, all in one way or another battling with the problems of relationships, ranging from long-marrieds (Gena Rowlands and Sean Connery) to Gen-X club-hoppers (Angelina Jolie and Ryan Phillippe). Ostensibly, part of the film is invested in the mystery of how all these characters are interrelated, but keen viewers will be able to discern the connections among everyone. It's the uniformly excellent performances, though, that make Playing by Heart compulsively watchable. Most striking, surprisingly enough, are Jolie and Phillippe, the youngest members of the cast who reveal heretofore hidden depths of talent. Jolie in particular increases her already-soaring stock as an actress. Equally impressive are Gillian Anderson and Jon Stewart, who transcend their yuppie personas in their awkward enactment of the timeless dating rituals. Other cast members, including Dennis Quaid, Anthony Edwards, Ellen Burstyn, Jay Mohr, and the always luminous Madeleine Stowe, are quite good, though saddled with story lines that are occasionally less than compelling. The only complaint you'll have is that once everyone's connections are revealed, you'll wish this cast had more of an opportunity to interact. The journey toward the film's bittersweet end, however, is marvelous in and of itself. --Mark Englehart

EXQUISITE.
I don't often shower all the 5 stars in my reviews here at Amazon, but this precious film deserves 6!

An amazing star cast, a theme that will have you guessing until the end how all the entertaining but diverse vignettes are connected, some very mature and intelligent humour, and above all some enchantingly memorable and sincere dialog about life, relationships, love.

Mind you, none of the characters is in a simple straightforward predicament. Angelina Jolie especially pitches in an absolutely stunning performance, although everyone is convincing and memorable in their role.

What a cleverly crafted movie. You know the satisfaction you feel when you've just had a complete meal, that's what I'll bet you'll feel.

Highly recommended absorbing film, for *owning*, not just for seeing once. It's one of those.

I LOVE this movie
I really, don't know what to say, this is my all-time favorite movie! Great cast, great storyline, and not so romantic that the man in your life will be able to enjoy it! A must see for anyone who was, is, or ever has been in love!

Know thyself
This movie is awesome! If you're into deep, conceptual movie plots this is good movie for you to see. The first time I rented this movie I watched it three times in a row. The message this movie sends is powerful and uplifting.

Playing For Keeps
Released in DVD by Universal Studios (12 August, 2003)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Directors: Harvey Weinstein and Bob Weinstein
Starring: Daniel Jordano and Matthew Penn
Average review score:

WOW!
What a fun movie with outstanding music! While it IS an 80s movie, I think you will find a slightly more tolerable rating on your Eighties-Cheese-O-Meter.

The first time I saw PLAYING FOR KEEPS was in a dark and dirty movie theater in Queens, New York. It was the 80s and I was a rebellious teen who judged every movie by its references to Michael Jackson, Cindy Lauper and break dancing. Now that my brain is no longer infected by the "80s-Lack-of-Common-Sense-and-Good-Taste" Virus, I like the movie. in fact, I like it a lot. Now I understand that the producers were poking fun at 80s mentality I held in such high regard.

If I had to pick a fault it would be the slowness in the middle of the film, but the rest of the movie makes up for it. Also, I wish the set designer threw away his 80s color wheel when he designed the set for the final, climactic, party sequence.

Overall, Playing for Keeps is a fun movie with great music and a very sexy Marisa Tomei. If you want to have a good time and listen to some great music I recommend purchasing Playing for Keeps and adding it to your library.

I wouldn't be surprised if this movie became a cult classic.

Four Dogs Playing Poker
Released in DVD by Warner Studios (11 December, 2001)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Paul Rachman
It's not a question of who will turn on each other so much as when in this trust-game thriller. Four friends who fancy themselves art thieves suddenly owe a million dollars to a powerful thug (Forest Whitaker). The solution they come up with is morbidly ingenious: one will die to save the others. But that's never the sort of pact you can expect people to follow through on, and therein lies the suspense. While it isn't Hitchcock (or even Tarantino), it isn't half-bad and it maintains a compelling pace. With the exception of a cartoonishly written druggie character, the plot holds together fairly well, and the four young leads (including Olivia Williams from Rushmore) are suitably dodgy. Veterans like Tim Curry and Whitaker drop by to help out, and just to make sure you know it's an art-house movie Four Dogs Playing Poker carries the hallmark of all movies with edgy aspirations: onscreen vomiting. Don't think too hard or you'll figure it out early. But if you sit back and relax, you'll have a good time. --Ali Davis

Tim's a hottie...but he dies
I knew going into this movie that Tim Curry dies (poor guy, he always dies), but this was a very gruesome death. Too bad becasue Felix was a cutie! The rest of the movie, in my opinion, is pretty cool. Yes, it's confusing @ first, but a second watch clears a lot up. Of course everyone's entitled to their own opinions. :-)

Tim steals the show
Great movie...in my personal opinion it was completely under-rated. I hadn't even heard of it until a couple of months ago.
Tim steals the show...despite the fact that he dies considerably early. Why is it that he dies in every damn movie? There's something about his English accent that exudes sensuality, and for an older man he is extremely attractive...but to each his own, I'm sure there are those that would disagree with me. Go rent or buy this movie today...you won't regret it.

Great Movie!
Four Dogs Playing Poker was a very suspenseful film. Casting as very terrific and it was wonderful that every single one of them can act! Although I am a huge John Taylor fan and was quite disappointed that he didn't get more lines in the film.

Playing Mona Lisa
Released in DVD by Buena Vista (06 May, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Matthew Huffman
Average review score:

Amusing Movie, Crappy DVD
This is the kind of DVD that makes me quite sad. Basically, the only advantage you have over the VHS version is that it is widescreen. Other than that, it really doesn't have any features, so the price seems a bit high.

The movie itself, however, is pretty amusing. Claire Goldstein(Alicia Witt) is a recent graduate in the field of fine arts -piano playing to be exact (which is appropriate since Witt plays the piano quite well in real life). When her boyfriend proposes to her, she is on the top of the world... and then falls all the way down when it turns out he was drunk and forgets all about it. Will her family and friends be able to bring her back up?

Some of the relatively minor characters are great, such as Estelle Harris, aka Estelle Costanza as Aunt Velva, and Elliot Gould and Marlo Thomas as Claire's parents. Overall, I'd say that this movie is more of a rental fare, unless your sure you'll watch it 8 or 9 times, given that there is no extended content on the disc.

Hilarious and Spontaneous
"Playing Mona Lisa" is the story of a talented musician whose family is completly wacked out and whose personal life is even more so. Alicia Witt, who actually plays the piano pieces on and off-screen, plays the character tremendously. What a talented young woman! The rest of the cast, including Ivan Sergei, Brooke Langton, Johnny Galecki, Elliot Gould, and Marlo Thomas, add a wonderful humorous touch, each fitting his or her part flawlessly. One of my favorite characters from Seinfeld is present; George's mother, playing her typical hilarious obnoxious self. Perfect!

I have read a few critics' reviews of this movie, and I think that some are a bit too harsh. This is not an Oscar-worthy movie, so why treat it as one? Sit back and have fun, laugh at the ridiculous antics and play along with the at-times-unplausible yet intriguing story line. Bravo to the cast and crew for creating an uplifting, airy tale of life, love, music, and growing up.

This is one of my favorite all time movies!
I saw this movie on the Independent Film Channel on Direct TV just a few weeks ago and I must tell you that it is exellently writen and produced! It's a funny, emotionally moving film. It doesn't move too slow, had a wonderful cast and the cinematography/lighting/sound track perfectly fit the scenes and moods that the director wanted. I was totally impressed. I'm ordering 3 copies so I can give them to my closest friends. The story really speaks to women who have been in relationships that didn't work out or that had some rocky patches, and reminds us of the independance and self reliance that we each have within ourselves. It's really motivating!

Playing God
Released in DVD by Touchstone Video (06 May, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Andy Wilson (IV)
Starring: David Duchovny and Timothy Hutton
After his bloody showdown with Brad Pitt's psychopathic redneck in Kalifornia, David Duchovny used an off-season hiatus from The X-Files to star in this 1997 thriller, in which he plays a doctor whose fall from professional grace leads to a dangerous career in the criminal underworld. Having lost his license after drug abuse caused him to lose a patient during surgery, he's recruited into his illegal career by a slimy but charismatic millionaire (Timothy Hutton) whose associates have a way of getting shot all the time. Before long, Duchovny comes to realize the extent of Hutton's evil, and he finds himself caught in a criminal trap that also involves an alluring femme fatale (Angelina Jolie) and a Faustian bargain that could cost him his life. The plot's rather absurd and fairly predictable, but fine performances by Duchovny and especially Hutton (who makes a memorable screen villain) make this stylish thriller intriguingly worthwhile. The DVD includes the original theatrical trailer. --Jeff Shannon

The WORST movie of all time!!!
I should have known to stay away from this when our local newspaper gave it an F. But, 9 times out of 10, film critics are usually wrong, and I end up loving what they hate. So, we went anyways.....Well, for once, we should have listened to that paper. This movie is SO ridiculous, and the acting is SO horrible, and the plot is SO completely asinine, that it brings a question to mind....who in their right mind could have possibly thought this script was worthy of committing to celluloid??? My friend and I managed to keep people from walking out and lamenting on their lost 7 bucks by cracking jokes throughout the whole movie, and halfway through, we had the whole theater (all 6 of them, my party of 3 included) turned around in their seats watching us to see what we were going to say next. I don't think any of us actually saw the ending.....I do have a sort of affection for this movie for the fact that I realized that no matter how bad the movie is, I can always manage to keep myself entertained, simply by making fun of it. For that, it gets my one measly star. Well, that and you're required to put at least one when you review these things. Although I do have to agree with one of the reviewers..I haven't laughed so hard in a while either!

Morality Play as Duchovany Plays God
Some reviewers call the premise absurd.... I don't know... I didn't find it to be such a stretch of the imagination. Some one loses their license to be a doctor and gets roped into doctoring for a bad guy... It could happen! I thought Timothy Hutton performed well as well as David Duchovany. Nicely done.

A very enjoyable movie
I would give it five stars because it is my favorite movie of all time, but some would say that it's far from perfect. I really like this movie because the main character, has flaws. It makes it seem more realistic to me when people in movies aren't perfect. It has good camera work that I really like. It makes for some cool shots and I never felt lost when some action was going on. It has a cool car chase, just the right amount of comedy here and there, a decent story, fairly good acting, and some good action! This definatly could have been better, but I think it has just the right combination of things to make it an enjoyable movie that I think anyone that is a fan of action or David Duchovny should definately see. I don't think you'll be dissapointed!
