Messenger of Death
Released in DVD by M G M, Inc (04 February, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: J. Lee Thompson
Starring: Charles Bronson and Trish Van Devere
Charles Bronson stars in yet another tale of murder and vengeance. After the brutal massacre of a Colorado family, reporter Garret Smith (Bronson) investigates the blood feud between two brothers of an isolationist Mormon sect, only to uncover a conspiracy that leads to the heights of Denver society. Messenger of Death aspires to be some mixture of Witness and Chinatown; the movie has a workmanlike structure, but there's not much inspiration to be found. Bronson, puffy-faced and graying, isn't doing much more than earning a paycheck. Also featuring Trish Van Devere and Daniel Benzali. --Bret Fetzer

Bronson Vs. The Mormons!
After a string of sleazy action flicks with Chuck(Evil That Men Do, Murphy's Law, Death Wish 4: The Crackdown), director J. Lee Thompson seemed like he wanted to do something a little different with his next Bronson picture. Messenger Of Death is a little more on the drama/suspense side than action. Sure it's got bits of action here and there, but most of the film has Bronson trying to get to the bottom of a brutal murder. It's not terribly exciting, but it certainly isn't a bad film. I guess I'm just used to the vigilante Bronson, which is unfortunate coz he's capable of more than that. But this movie won't give you anything you haven't seen before, although it certainly makes mormons out to be a creepy bunch. Bronson really doesn't turn on the Bronson until the last five minutes or so of the film, but he does it with that flair we all love. All in all, not too bad, but it's main function will be to make your Bronson collection larger.

Bronson searches for a mass murderer.
An investigative reporter (Charles Bronson) tries to unravel the mystery behind the assassintation of an entire Mormon family. An above average murder mystery with action scenes, Messenger of Death is flawed only by an ending so abrupt it's nearly comical. Still I recommend it to the former action superstar's fans.

a wonderful plot twisting action drama
Charles Bronson is in my opinion the best action movie star because he didn't LOOK the type. he didn't have over-bearing muscles and a majority of his characters were appealing to the "common man" who felt helpless in the face of the system. on this tale, Charles plays a reporter named Garret Smith who investigates the brutal murder of two women and a group of little children. the murder opens up this movie and we see who does it so this isn't a mystery figure to the viewer that Charles is looking for. the fun is watching how the police and the newspaper are going to solve the case. Charles wouldn't be the same without some tough love and he dishes it out as only he can. the movie ended without a wrap-up or a conclusion. it simply ended with a murder...i won't say who. the entire movie is based on a family feud, mormons, relgious zealots, the Colorado Water Company, and two outsiders who stand to gain from the family feud. it's a complex story and it's the kind of Bronson film most people wouldn't like because it requires a person to think like a criminal or an illogical person. most viewers generally root for the cop or the good guy, right? when you deal with oddballs and deranged killers like Bronson does in mostly all of his movies, the "good guy" HAS to do things illogical or things that don't make sense in order to get in the mind of a crook and therefore solve the case as the movie progresses. having said that, "Messenger of Death" is one of Bronson's last great action movie. this movie came out in 1988 and i think that 1989 was his last big year as far as the box office goes. i could be wrong but after "Kinjite" in 1989, i can't recall any other movie of his pulling the sort of money at the box office one requires to make to land in the Top-20 list? i'll do some research on that subject later on. meanwhile, catch this movie because it's entertaining and that's the key element.

Faces of Death IV
Released in DVD by Mpi Media Group (30 July, 2002)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Starring: Louis Flellis

garbage!!!!!!!!!!!!
just like my review title this is garbage it really sucks i thought that these were real scenes of death but it is 110% all fake crap.when i saw it the first time in the year 2000 i could've sworn that it was real but its not it is the most fake crap i've ever watched.if you want real try traces of death or banned from tv.cause i was really disappointed

YOU SICK LITTLE MONKEY
Never have cartoons made a better point than in Ren from the Ren and Stimpy show

This film is a rather monotonous look on the morbidity of death. It ain't the prettiest of pictures to watch ( although you kinda know that ). The commentary is like a big joke really. When the presenter tries to look fearsome he looks like a goofball trying to play a psychotic doctor whose " fascination with the artform " of death is hilarious. After a half an hour you become numb to the images of death that surround this movie. Weak stomachs are not something you should have watching this movie. And yeah parts of it are fake but even still they do a pretty good job at grossing you out

For those who love this movie - maybe therapy is required!

The only Faces of Death you need!
When I first saw this, I fell in love immediately! Louis Flellis is remarkable. His independent study of death is unveiled in this documentary and is un-paralleled by his predecessor - Francis Gross (who was the host of the first three Faces of Death documentaries). In this fourth installment, Flellis' cunning shrewdness and intelligence mixed with his uncanny, unique hint of humor is sure to keep you glued to the television. It's almost like watching the television show C.O.P.S. only with all the blood, guts, and gory gruesomeness included! Not recommended for one with a weak stomach. But definitely the ONLY Faces of Death you need!

Kung Fu - The Punch of Death
Released in DVD by Brentwood Communications (20 March, 2001)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Chai Yang-Min

A nice gem to add to your collection
This is a nice little movie to add to the collection if you are a fan of the older style martial arts films as I am. Definitely a bargain and not a waste of a few bucks. A similar plot seen before featuring revenge. A guy repeatedly goes after the martial arts masters who pretty much cripple him each time he attacks them. What's weird about this one is you're kinda glad the punk keeps getting his butt kicked and has to be taken home in a wheel barrow. You kinda root for the masters who always let him off by not killing him. He did after all kill a student of the masters. :)

above average at best
This is a fairly enjoyable old-school kung fu flick with a story similar to Fists of the White Lotus(guy gets repeatedly beaten by the villain until his repeated training helps him eventually to defeat his enemy). The lead is fine, but the fights are a little on the slow side, which is expected from an early 70's movie. The dvd has a nice widescreen transfer, a Casper cartoon short(don't know why either), short trivia game and dvd dictionary. Overall not a great movie or extras, but if you're a die-hard collector(and at this price with really good dvd picture quality) you might still want to pick it up.

btw, the reviewer from CA a couple reviews back is obviously reviewing something else.

Good to add to Collection !
This movie is in widescreen witch is good. The picture quallity could have been better but it's 10 times better than alot of other flicks that cost 10-25 dollors and it's worth buying for [this price].The old jappanese guy who fights Jet Li blinde folded in FIST OF LEGEND is in this movie, of corse 30 yrs younger. I think this movie is about FONG SAI YUK but it dosen't say it on the box. In the flick the main character's name is Fong siu Yi, don't know if there is two ways of saying the name but some one reading this will know.

Death is Just the Beginning, Vol. 7
Released in DVD by Caroline Distributio (28 January, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)

Even Death can't save this DVD
Death is just the beginning Vol. 7 , A title wich in itself brings hopes of ogre metal cave troll bashing riffs, but do you get it? No, "Death is just the beginning Vol. 7" Wich has cover art of skeletons and graves brings hope of gore metal hatchet to the head mentality but do you get it? No, what you get is extreme power metal with big fluffy hair, dragon-heart themed rock ballads wich where supposed to be dead and gone with the fall of the year 1989 and the rise of the 1990's. This DVD is a waste of time, well unless you like 40 year old men dancing around in leather and studs singing about taking over the whole world with their heavy metal, or unless you work in a steel mill.
With very few exceptions the bands on this DVD have as much talent as finger nail clippings so do their fans. Thanks Nuclear Blast for making me smash my TV!

Pure Majesty
This dvd was pretty cool with all the hammerfall videos and live stuff. I think that anybody who would complain that this video has too much power metal, probably didn't take the time to read the track listing before purchasing it, and thus is a victim of their own stupidity.

Betterman - Seeds of Death (Vol. 3)
Released in DVD by Geneon Entertainment (08 October, 2002)
MPAA Rating:
The threat from the monster Algernon fades, as Keito, Hinoki, and the gang battle the sinister Dr. Umezaki. Instead of researching food sources for the burgeoning human population, Umezaki has created vast swarms of insects he can control. He's also bred giant bug-slaves and used humans to feed crops of the "Animus flower" (whose seeds enable Lamia to transform into Betterman). Keito and Hinoki are rescued once again by Chandy, who slays Umezaki, even though he's apparently her father. Betterman is also on duty, fighting dragonlike clouds of bugs, as is his unexplained female counterpart. The visuals make no more sense than the dialogue, which includes such howlers as Umezaki's declaration, "The holy water of the Salamander shall transmit my brain impulses to a belladonna lily." The new settings weaken the claustrophobic tone, the only thing that distinguished this muddled Evangelion clone. (Rated 13 and older: violence, nudity, grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon
Average review score:

It's starting to degenerate....
After cleaning up the mess left by the killer worms that appeared in "Tenth Night" Keita, Hinoki, and the rest of the gang head to a special research facility to consult Dr. Umazaki, a wormy scientist who has supposedly been researching future food sources to benefit humanity. Little do they know: Umazaki is the madman behind all the mysterious hanky-panky our heros have been investigating.

Umazaki turns out to be a real crack pot. He's used everything from mind control to genetically engineered insects to reek havoc, all so he can grow animus flowers, which allow Betterman Lamia to transform.

Still with me? Were it not for the visuals in this series and the soundtrack, BETTERMAN would impossible to enjoy. Some of the dialog is a tad cheesy. Besides that, the creators of this series have sprinkled random scenes and flash-backs all over these episodes, which may confuse the viewer rather than enlighten. It's these details that stop me from giving BETTERMAN a full five-star rating.

There are, however, some excellent action sequences in this volume. Keita and Hinoki battle hordes of monstrous insects using their NueroNoid. Unfortunatly, they and the rest of the Akumatsu crew end up going crazy after getting a wiff of Umazaki's latest creation: a huge flower-like creature that uses chemicals to control human beings. The best part of "Seeds of Death" is when Hinoki inhales some of the noxious brew and starts laughing like an idiot, (which is a big change from her moping around calling herself one). We get a little more character development from Shou, but Keita is still the only main character with any deep development.

This volume is only worth your time if you are a big fan of BETTERMAN. It features four episodes rather than five, but there are still plenty of nice extras.

MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)

CAUSE OF DEATH
This film is NOT BAD, it has a real noir feel to it even for it's small budget. Good action and thrills. Jones seems to really have a good grasp as a writer and director. I can tell he must be a "Marathon Man" fan. I really enjoyed this film.

Death Sentence
Released in DVD by Essex (13 November, 1997)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director: E.W. Swackhamer
Average review score:

"Death Sentence" doesn't really star Nick Nolte
The real stars of "Death Sentence" (originally a 1972 Movie of the Week entitled "After the Trial") are Cloris Leachman and Laurence Luckinbill. Nick Nolte is in the picture, though in a relatively minor role as a man on trial for the murder of his wife. Leachman is a bored housewife who's thrilled to have been picked to be on the jury ("I think this is the first time I've ever felt like a full-fledged member of this community!").

Her excitement turns to fear, though, when the unfolding evidence begins to indicate that someone close to her may have actually committed the murder. The suspense culminates in a middle-of-the-night confrontation during (what else?) a raging thunderstorm.

This film is a good example of the "suspense" genre of TV movie, with some genuinely suspenseful moments. It's solidly acted and scripted, if not exceptional in any way. The generally poor quality of the film and the sound detract somewhat, but are to be expected in TV movies that are nearly 3 decades old. If you can get it at a low enough price, "Death Sentence" is diverting enough for an evening.

Politics of Violence/Death & G
Released in DVD by Madacy Entertainment (31 August, 1999)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Great Events of Our Century
Average review score:

Good, affordable documentaries
The Great Events of Our Century DVD set is a 5-disc set, each disc comprising of 2 1-hour documentaries relating to a theme of the past century (actually, up until the late 90's). While the documentaries are well-researched, the fact that each documentary is only 1 hour long necessitates just a very brief touching on the various subjects. Still, the documentaries are diverse and talk about everything from human rights to entertainment, to wars to science.

The DVD's themselves are nothing special. Full frame, no special features to speak of. However, the fact that there are 2 episodes per disc ... makes this a decent set if you're a History-channel type. The only thing I wish the set had was what happened in the last 3 years of the century (as we all know, there were a few very signficant events just in those last 3 years), but alas, guess we'll have to wait for the "Ultimate Edition."
