St. John in Exile
Released in DVD by Alpha Omega Publicat (06 March, 1998)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Dean Jones
Average review score:

Incredible performance
The performance by Dean Jones in this 90 minute monologue is such that he will have you laughing at pulling locust legs from his teeth one moment and only a minute later in tears reliving the martyrdom of the apostles. Everyone I have shown it to has said nearly the same thing when they first realized they were going to watch one actor speak for 90 minutes "This is boring" and within 5 minutes they are glued to the presentation and in need of the intermission just because of the emotional depths they have traversed.

Powerfully Profound!
I have a vast range of experience and beliefs about spirituality. When I recommend a product, it is because it touches my soul and makes a difference in people's lives. This production is the finest of it's genre and I share it often with Christians, but especially with non-Christians - because it captures the essense of the EXPERIENCE of Christ's love versus the BELIEF in Christ's teachings - it IS the soul behind the beliefs. It is a glimpse of the profound, lifechanging influence that discovering your heart and knowing that you are unconditionally loved can make in your life and the lives of others. I use this as my witness - there is no need for more. Dean Jones truely allowed his soul to shine through the words and he is absolutely brilliant in his portrayal of St. John. I believe this was Mr. Jones finest performance. I have been blessed to have discovered this tool and this masterpiece.

amazing
This was an amazing depiction of the story of Chirst........and one of the best versions of the crucifixtion that I have ever seen.

Davey and Goliath - Vol. 2

The Good Moral to the Story is....
If a good show teaches it's done the job well. That's what Davey and Goliath show did for me when I was a kid. Every Sunday I watched the program cause I loved the talking dog, Goliath. Doesn't that get a kid every time there's a talking animal around. It's ashame they don't have good animation that teaches a good message to kids. The kind that teaches them good morals, loving your neighbor, how important it is to care about our world and not giving into peer pressure. Each episode is based on the biblical principles of God.

This contains eight episodes and are short in time length. So, it doesn't take a long time for the little ones to watch. The stories are to the point and don't take alots of time to get the message across. The shows may be a little 60ish decade but their lessons are timeless. If you're going to give a gift of entertainment to a child then I'd recommend a great ministering teacher like Davey & Goliath.

Wonderful Children's show that delights and teaches
I watched Davey and Goliath as a child and was happy to see that they are now available on DVD. Watching them was not just a journey back in time as they still delight and teach very important messages on how to live life. I think children (and Adults) of today need to see shows like this, which explain why it is important not to litter our enviroment, spread false witness against others, give in to peer pressure, etc. I would highly recommend this DVD series.

Tired of your kids watching worthless animation??
Are you tired of your kids watching animation where everybody in the show gets blown up, shot or smashed (but none of the characters ever dies)or everyone has some sort of magic power & incantation? Then these DVD's are your ticket to an entertaining (but not mindless)kids show. The DVD's have eight 14 minute episodes which deal with topics such as sibling rivalry (Lemonade stand),hostility towards immigrants (The Shoemaker),community responsibility (Good Neighbor)& child safety (Chicken). My 2 kids (4 yrs & 14 months) both like to watch these DVD's. My oldest child actually is learning traits which will help her later in life (such as paying attention to danger signs, self-worth, etc...)by watching these shows. There are 64 episodes of this show, & almost all of them are available on either DVD or VHS. If you grew up watching these shows (as I did) you'll enjoy the nostalgia effect and your kids will get a kick out of hearing you say (in Goliath's voice) "I don't know, Daa-vey"!

Refreshment for your soul.
This video satisfies that spiritual desire we all have for God's love. With His loving Words set upon the beautiful skies, and spectacular seascapes, you'll find Peace and Love in the magnificant tape. I've given it to many of my friends over Christmas and they all enjoyed it. A great gift of Love for all!

Serene beauty, quiet stillness, healing scriptures and...
time to ponder them. Soothing Scriptures is easy on the eyes and ears. The overall sound and images are beautiful and flowing. I'm very fond of this one for it is faith renewing and inspring at the same time. A great gift for anyone in need of the Lord's guidance and love.

Reconnect with God and nature in a prayerful setting
Soothing Scriptures is a powerful channel to experience God's gift. The Scripture quotes are well chosen and inspire the mind and spirit to marvel at God's creation. At the end of a tiring day it can provide a fitting time to reconnect with God, oneself and nature in a prayerful and relaxing setting. I am grateful to Greg Voevodsky, the creator of this video, for the many relaxing moments he has given me through this wonderful work.

A Class Act
Charlton Heston really does a superb job in this wonderful presentation.
A great actor (and American) with great material!
What more can one ask?

Heston brings the Bible to life
Charlton Heston is to be commended for his fabulous job in "Jesus of Nazareth". He brings the story of Jesus' life on earth to life as he shows us the places where Jesus lived and taught, while interweaving the appropriate Biblical narratives. Charlton Heston's dramatic readings give this DVD a truly emotional impact. A+++

7 Signs of Christ's Return

MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Average review score:

Excellent Production of Pre-Millennial Eschatology
I highly, highly recommend this video for those who want an accurate and quality documentary on Bible Prophecy for the Latter Days. Graphics, Biblical context, archived historical footage and sequencing are superbly presented.

There are a few things that should be noted. Though mentioned in the film, it may not be emphasized enough that the "watch" which occurred at the end of 999 A.D. failed because Israel had not returned to her land, as necessitated by Zechariah 12/14, Ezekiel 36/37, Isaiah 66 and Revelation 11/13. Also, Herod's work on the Second Temple to God was actually a renovation of the Second Temple built after the Jews returned from Babylonian Captivity, having been liberated around 534 B.C. In addition the film shows footage of an idol which is strictly forbidden by God as an object of worship or reverance in Exodus 20:4 KJV and Leviticus 26:1 KJV (use the KJV as certain versions have "edited" these passages).

Whether the European Union will become the feet of iron and clay from Nebuchadnezzar's dream in Daniel 2 remains to be seen. But it certainly seems well on its way. Nonetheless, the footage of European armies shows that a new economic power is on the rise. However, most of the aircraft shown are American-made, not European.

The film appears to have potentially focused on the year 2000 rather than overtly stating that it is the "Signs of the Times" that are significant in prophecy, not any particular date. And in relation to the "Signs of the Times" the film does an excellent job, starting with the reborn nation of Israel; miraculously founded on May 14, 1948 in a striking fulfillment of Isaiah 66:8 and Ezekiel 36:24. The most recent foreshadowing of the coming son of perdition (2nd Thess. 2:3; cf. John 17:12 KJV), Adolph Hitler, and his Axis-power buddy, Benito Mussolini, are well-documented with prime footage. Even though it may have been movie footage, the schoolchildren singing an homage to Adolph Hitler is beyond frightening and definitely accurate.

If you're a church pastor who is looking for teaching materials or just want a quality product for a presentation on Bible Prophecy, this is a great video. DVD has chapter access and, like the VHS, has excellent viewing quality.

I'm glad they made this available on DVD. Amazon.Com also carries "End Times in the Words of Jesus", probably the best prophecy video on End-Times Bible Prophecy. Buy both "7 Signs of Christ's Return" and "End Times in the Words of Jesus" for study!

The Bible - Esther
Released in DVD by Vidmark/Trimark (26 September, 2000)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director: Raffaele Mertes
The biblical story of Esther, the Jewish woman who saved her people when they faced annihilation, is told in this production featuring British actress Louise Lombard in the title role and F. Murray Abraham as Mordecai, Esther's cousin and foster father. As a girl living under Persian rule, Esther was essentially kidnapped and taken into the harem of the king, Xerxes. The king, taken by her beauty, made her his queen, and as dramatized in the film, she found herself involved in a delicate balancing act between the ruling Persians and her own Jewish people. While this is a fairly elaborate production with a solid supporting cast, it proceeds at a relaxed pace and never quite takes off dramatically. But it does provide a solid telling of Esther's story, and if considered as something of a docudrama, it's successful. The story is clearly told of how the king's chief minister, Haman, had hoped to see the Jews annihilated, but thanks to Esther's intercession the Jews were able to defend themselves and destroy their enemies (events which are celebrated at the Jewish Feast of Purim). The production does provide much of the period flavor of ancient life, and the major facets of the story and portrayals of the characters coincide with biblical accounts. --Robert J. McNamara

A Good Adaptation
This film is part of the Trimark Home Video Bible series. It is refreshing to know that new movies about the Bible are still being made.

This movie is from the book of Esther. If you are watching the whole video series, you should watch "Jeremiah" before this one. It will explain the first part of the movie. The actor playing the king in "Jeremiah" is also the king played in this movie. This was not intentional.

To keep the movie to an hour and a half, there have been some things added. I do feel that these neither change anything in the Bible nor do they distract the viewer. I find this to be a good tool in learning the book of Esther.

The end of the movie speaks of Ezra and what he did for the people. It sounds like a lead-in to another movie, but alas, there is no movie on the book of Ezra.

I would recommend this movie.

Exquisite and Compassionate
Esther shines as a light in a dark place, and the story follows closely the biblical account in a beautiful way. Esther is portrayed radiantly, as is her uncle Mordecai, played with intensity by F. Murray Abraham. History has shown what the consequences of her actions were - "how God has allowed you to live in such a time like this." It's a wake-up call for us all.

Beautiful movie
With so much tasteless stuff comming out of hollywood these days this movie was a refreashing change. I enjoyed the fact that it remained with the biblical storey of Esther...ever so much portraying the king as a flake. Great movie and well done just like Jacob, David, Abraham and the rest of those movies that have been recently produced. Louise Lombard was perfect for the part of the biblical Jewish Queen Esther.

The Dalai Lama - The Four Noble Truths
Released in DVD by Mystic Fire (02 April, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Four Noble Truths
In his first sermon at Deer Park, the historical Buddha spoke of the Four Noble Truths of sentient existence:

1. The existence of suffering, or dukkha

2. The cause of suffering (karma)

3. The cessation of suffering

4. The Path that leads to the cessation of suffering

This set of four videos collects a series of lectures on the Four Noble Truths given by His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama in 1997 in England. The lectures were a landmark event, bringing together for the first time in the West a nonsectarian Buddhist and lay audience for over six hours of emotional and intellectually challenging engagement with these central teachings of the Buddhist canon. The impressive intellect and scholarship of His Holiness is everywhere evident in these tapes as he traverses the expansive body of Buddhist scriptures and commentaries. One also catches glimpses of his mischievous sense of humor and, of course, his inspiring compassion.

The first tape is a framework for the discussion of the Four Truths. His Holiness discusses the importance of developing a critical insight toward one's perceptions of reality, and he emphasizes the value of the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha) in finding the way to this insight. Though he begins in English, as he gets into the finer points of Tibetan philosophy he turns to his native language and speaks through a translator. The tape concludes in a lighthearted mode with a question-and-answer period, again in English, in which he giggles over the Western interest in finding the "quickest, cheapest, and most efficient" way to enlightenment.

The second tape addresses the First of the Truths, of dukkha, or suffering. Here His Holiness searches for the roots of this suffering in an understanding of cosmology, both among Buddhist writings and among the work of contemporary physicists, but ultimately he points to our human ignorance of the fleeting nature of pleasurable experience as the root cause.

Tape 3 opens with an analysis of the causes of suffering (the law of karma). He begins to set out the Buddhist path, which, he says, must always be grounded in the aspiration for "freedom from samsara"--life amid the world of afflictive emotions. In the most impassioned moment of the hours of lectures, His Holiness uses his surprisingly deft English to explain how our emotions are the true "enemy" and destroyer of all of our happiness and health. If you believe, he argues, that one can do something about one's feelings of greed, anger, etc., then one should dedicate oneself to study and mental training to root out the afflictive emotions and foster the positive emotions. The end of tape 3 briefly addresses the Third Truth, of the cessation of suffering.

Finally, tape 4, which is peppered with references to classical Buddhist texts, takes up the Path (The Eight-Fold Path, as it is usually called) to "direct, intuitive realization of emptiness." At the root of this path, His Holiness says that one most foster bodhichitta, the altruistic desire to attain enlightenment for oneself so that one may help others. He recommends that one devote oneself, above all else, to seeing oneself as interconnected with all other beings. To stay on the Path, one must be devoted to single-point meditation and analytical meditation. And one must be determined. Enlightenment may, he admits, take eons.

One curiosity of the videos is the cameraperson's roving eye. Frequently, the picture will settle on a rapt or amused audience member. On a couple of occasions, the faces in the audience are famous: John Cleese and various British TV personalities. Each of the four videos also includes a brief introduction by Tibetan Buddhism scholar Robert Thurman, who contextualizes the lectures within the many Buddhist traditions. --Patrick O'Kelley

words of wisdom
dvd quality very good. the radiant smiles from his holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and his words of wisdom is a wonderful way to spend the day or evening. Very good explaination of the four noble truths, who else could explain it any better. lay people might find it intense and needs a great deal of contentration of the meaning of his words.

Worth every penny
A great lecture! Very informative. Robert Thurman's introductions are well done. I especially liked it when the dalai lama spoke in english; which he did several times throughout the discs. I used to watch this every night to help me go to sleep and i remember having dreams of enlightenment. Even though the dalai lama speaks in his native tongue most of the time, certain messages are spoken through his countenance that i have never seen another person express. its truly amazing just to observe him. very soothing and comforting. i loved it. im sure you will too!

A rare opportunity....
After waiting patiently for the arrival of these DVDs I want to say that I feel very priviliged to have at my fingertips an opportunity to see and hear the wonderfully compassionate Holiness right in my own home. Technology is great. It is a rare opportunity indeed and I'm sure I will cherish these DVDs for a long time. They will be very useful also for study groups. I want to thank all the people who made it possible.

Davey and Goliath - Vol. 1: New Skates/Waterfall
Released in DVD by Image Entertainment (25 January, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
In the tradition of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, Davey and Goliath is the long-standing children's stop-motion 3D-animated television show many of us grew up admiring. Conceived by Art Clokey, creator of Gumby, in the mid-1960s, these stories were embraced as a welcome alternative to the "violent" children's programs and cartoons of the times. What set Davey and Goliath apart from the rest was believable characters, state-of-the-art animation, and familiar situations that taught children the importance of forgiveness, acceptance, acknowledging differences, patience, and hope.

Davey and Goliath: The New Skates and Other Stories contains the following episodes: "The New Skates," "Cousin Barney," "The Time Machine," and "The Mechanical Man." It's a nostalgic return for old fans and will open up a whole new generation to the moral magic of Davey and Goliath. --Rob Bracco

Average review score:

Pleasant but perfunctory DVD
A nice selection of episodes from the classic series. I wish they had given some thought to some extras, but what's here is good enough. The film sources could have used a little cleanup here and there, but it's certainly better than the Gumby DVD, also from Clokey Productions.

Classic Entertainment
Fun for kids and adults alike. Timeless. Good messages.

More than entertainment --these are lesssons for life
This is suppose to be a DVD review, so let me tell you about the "features" of this DVD: there are none. (Unless you count a couple of screens of background info on the creation of the Davey and Goliath series as a "feature.")

It is rather obvious that no work was done to clean up the picture or improve the faded colors. In one story, their is a hair or string in the upper left corner that remains viewable for several mintues! Sound is adequate, but you won't be needing a THX certified sound system to bring this disk to life. (Nor will you need Dolby Digital, Dolby Surrond, or even plain old stereo...mono systems will be more than adequate.)

This disk itself is just a plain boring silver affair with the "Davey and Goliath" logo imprinted on it. The case is one of those cheap paper & plastic things like Warner Brothers uses for their fine films. It is obvious that as little money as possible was spent on the production and distrubtion of this DVD.

It is also obvioius that as little money as possible was spent on the actual production of Davey and Goliath...but that's understandable seeing how this was a non-profit televisionn show. The Lutherans were not looking to pick up a lot of ad revenue with their two claymation hereos.

So with all that out of the way, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the purchase of this DVD, especially if you are interested in grounding small children in good, old fashioned moral lessons.

Davey and Goliath wildly succeed where 90% of children productions fall down and die --it gives children valuable life lessons while still managing to be entertaining. In the last 40 years or so, the only thing I can think of that suceeds as well are the very recent "VeggieTales" productions. What's even more amazing is that these profound little lessons in morality are done without being preachy or condemming; rather, they are done in a very gentle and loving manner. Many of these Davey and Goliath episodes would be as welcome in a Jewish or Muslim household as they would in a Christian home.

The animator, Art Clokey, and the writer, Nancy Moore, deserve a tremendous amount of praise and gratitude. My two children (ages 4 & 6) love watching these episdodes, just as their father did when he was their age. And while they are watching they are learing some valuable things about life and morality that no child should be withhout.

This particular disk contains the following episodes:

1. The Waterfall

2. The Parade
3. Officer Bob
4. The Dog Show
5. The New Skates
6. Cousin Barney
7. The Time Machine
8. The Mechanical Man

The total running time of all eight episodes is 113 minutes.

No home should go without a copy of this DVD.
