Incredible performance
Powerfully Profound!
amazing

The Good Moral to the Story is....
This contains eight episodes and are short in time length. So, it doesn't take a long time for the little ones to watch. The stories are to the point and don't take alots of time to get the message across. The shows may be a little 60ish decade but their lessons are timeless. If you're going to give a gift of entertainment to a child then I'd recommend a great ministering teacher like Davey & Goliath.

I previewed this and it was great!

A wonderful SURMMARIZED version
IT'S A MUST SEE.

Excellent Production of Pre-Millennial EschatologyThere are a few things that should be noted. Though mentioned in the film, it may not be emphasized enough that the "watch" which occurred at the end of 999 A.D. failed because Israel had not returned to her land, as necessitated by Zechariah 12/14, Ezekiel 36/37, Isaiah 66 and Revelation 11/13. Also, Herod's work on the Second Temple to God was actually a renovation of the Second Temple built after the Jews returned from Babylonian Captivity, having been liberated around 534 B.C. In addition the film shows footage of an idol which is strictly forbidden by God as an object of worship or reverance in Exodus 20:4 KJV and Leviticus 26:1 KJV (use the KJV as certain versions have "edited" these passages).
Whether the European Union will become the feet of iron and clay from Nebuchadnezzar's dream in Daniel 2 remains to be seen. But it certainly seems well on its way. Nonetheless, the footage of European armies shows that a new economic power is on the rise. However, most of the aircraft shown are American-made, not European.
The film appears to have potentially focused on the year 2000 rather than overtly stating that it is the "Signs of the Times" that are significant in prophecy, not any particular date. And in relation to the "Signs of the Times" the film does an excellent job, starting with the reborn nation of Israel; miraculously founded on May 14, 1948 in a striking fulfillment of Isaiah 66:8 and Ezekiel 36:24. The most recent foreshadowing of the coming son of perdition (2nd Thess. 2:3; cf. John 17:12 KJV), Adolph Hitler, and his Axis-power buddy, Benito Mussolini, are well-documented with prime footage. Even though it may have been movie footage, the schoolchildren singing an homage to Adolph Hitler is beyond frightening and definitely accurate.
If you're a church pastor who is looking for teaching materials or just want a quality product for a presentation on Bible Prophecy, this is a great video. DVD has chapter access and, like the VHS, has excellent viewing quality.
I'm glad they made this available on DVD. Amazon.Com also carries "End Times in the Words of Jesus", probably the best prophecy video on End-Times Bible Prophecy. Buy both "7 Signs of Christ's Return" and "End Times in the Words of Jesus" for study!

A Good AdaptationThis movie is from the book of Esther. If you are watching the whole video series, you should watch "Jeremiah" before this one. It will explain the first part of the movie. The actor playing the king in "Jeremiah" is also the king played in this movie. This was not intentional.
To keep the movie to an hour and a half, there have been some things added. I do feel that these neither change anything in the Bible nor do they distract the viewer. I find this to be a good tool in learning the book of Esther.
The end of the movie speaks of Ezra and what he did for the people. It sounds like a lead-in to another movie, but alas, there is no movie on the book of Ezra.
I would recommend this movie.
Exquisite and Compassionate
Beautiful movie
1. The existence of suffering, or dukkha
2. The cause of suffering (karma)
3. The cessation of suffering
4. The Path that leads to the cessation of suffering
This set of four videos collects a series of lectures on the Four Noble Truths given by His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama in 1997 in England. The lectures were a landmark event, bringing together for the first time in the West a nonsectarian Buddhist and lay audience for over six hours of emotional and intellectually challenging engagement with these central teachings of the Buddhist canon. The impressive intellect and scholarship of His Holiness is everywhere evident in these tapes as he traverses the expansive body of Buddhist scriptures and commentaries. One also catches glimpses of his mischievous sense of humor and, of course, his inspiring compassion.
The first tape is a framework for the discussion of the Four Truths. His Holiness discusses the importance of developing a critical insight toward one's perceptions of reality, and he emphasizes the value of the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha) in finding the way to this insight. Though he begins in English, as he gets into the finer points of Tibetan philosophy he turns to his native language and speaks through a translator. The tape concludes in a lighthearted mode with a question-and-answer period, again in English, in which he giggles over the Western interest in finding the "quickest, cheapest, and most efficient" way to enlightenment.
The second tape addresses the First of the Truths, of dukkha, or suffering. Here His Holiness searches for the roots of this suffering in an understanding of cosmology, both among Buddhist writings and among the work of contemporary physicists, but ultimately he points to our human ignorance of the fleeting nature of pleasurable experience as the root cause.
Tape 3 opens with an analysis of the causes of suffering (the law of karma). He begins to set out the Buddhist path, which, he says, must always be grounded in the aspiration for "freedom from samsara"--life amid the world of afflictive emotions. In the most impassioned moment of the hours of lectures, His Holiness uses his surprisingly deft English to explain how our emotions are the true "enemy" and destroyer of all of our happiness and health. If you believe, he argues, that one can do something about one's feelings of greed, anger, etc., then one should dedicate oneself to study and mental training to root out the afflictive emotions and foster the positive emotions. The end of tape 3 briefly addresses the Third Truth, of the cessation of suffering.
Finally, tape 4, which is peppered with references to classical Buddhist texts, takes up the Path (The Eight-Fold Path, as it is usually called) to "direct, intuitive realization of emptiness." At the root of this path, His Holiness says that one most foster bodhichitta, the altruistic desire to attain enlightenment for oneself so that one may help others. He recommends that one devote oneself, above all else, to seeing oneself as interconnected with all other beings. To stay on the Path, one must be devoted to single-point meditation and analytical meditation. And one must be determined. Enlightenment may, he admits, take eons.
One curiosity of the videos is the cameraperson's roving eye. Frequently, the picture will settle on a rapt or amused audience member. On a couple of occasions, the faces in the audience are famous: John Cleese and various British TV personalities. Each of the four videos also includes a brief introduction by Tibetan Buddhism scholar Robert Thurman, who contextualizes the lectures within the many Buddhist traditions. --Patrick O'Kelley

words of wisdom
Worth every penny
A rare opportunity....
Davey and Goliath: The New Skates and Other Stories contains the following episodes: "The New Skates," "Cousin Barney," "The Time Machine," and "The Mechanical Man." It's a nostalgic return for old fans and will open up a whole new generation to the moral magic of Davey and Goliath. --Rob Bracco

Pleasant but perfunctory DVD
Classic Entertainment
More than entertainment --these are lesssons for lifeIt is rather obvious that no work was done to clean up the picture or improve the faded colors. In one story, their is a hair or string in the upper left corner that remains viewable for several mintues! Sound is adequate, but you won't be needing a THX certified sound system to bring this disk to life. (Nor will you need Dolby Digital, Dolby Surrond, or even plain old stereo...mono systems will be more than adequate.)
This disk itself is just a plain boring silver affair with the "Davey and Goliath" logo imprinted on it. The case is one of those cheap paper & plastic things like Warner Brothers uses for their fine films. It is obvious that as little money as possible was spent on the production and distrubtion of this DVD.
It is also obvioius that as little money as possible was spent on the actual production of Davey and Goliath...but that's understandable seeing how this was a non-profit televisionn show. The Lutherans were not looking to pick up a lot of ad revenue with their two claymation hereos.
So with all that out of the way, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the purchase of this DVD, especially if you are interested in grounding small children in good, old fashioned moral lessons.
Davey and Goliath wildly succeed where 90% of children productions fall down and die --it gives children valuable life lessons while still managing to be entertaining. In the last 40 years or so, the only thing I can think of that suceeds as well are the very recent "VeggieTales" productions. What's even more amazing is that these profound little lessons in morality are done without being preachy or condemming; rather, they are done in a very gentle and loving manner. Many of these Davey and Goliath episodes would be as welcome in a Jewish or Muslim household as they would in a Christian home.
The animator, Art Clokey, and the writer, Nancy Moore, deserve a tremendous amount of praise and gratitude. My two children (ages 4 & 6) love watching these episdodes, just as their father did when he was their age. And while they are watching they are learing some valuable things about life and morality that no child should be withhout.
This particular disk contains the following episodes:
1. The Waterfall
2. The Parade
3. Officer Bob
4. The Dog Show
5. The New Skates
6. Cousin Barney
7. The Time Machine
8. The Mechanical Man
The total running time of all eight episodes is 113 minutes.
No home should go without a copy of this DVD.
