Kitty Hawk - The Wright Brothers' Journey of Invention (Collector's Edition DVD)

How did they do it? ............ Look, listen and learn!!
This is a excellent 2 disk set. It includes a brief introduction into the early life of the Wright Brothers and their close knit family, and quickly gets into the story of their experiences involved with their invention of the airplane.
Also included are some of the legal problems that they encountered years later in trying to protect their invention.

The footage of their early experiments of testing their un-powered gliders was actually shot near the site of their now famous First Flight, Kitty Hawk/Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. It is some of the best footage of these recreated flight's I've ever seen. Well worth it just for that footage alone. Also included were computer simulations of what the first Powered flight might have looked like. Not as exciting as the glider footage, being a simulation, they were none the less very educational in showing what the brothers went through on that cold, windy day 100 years ago.

The 2nd disk also includes interviews with some of the modern day pilots that are hoping to fly a replica of the 1903 Flyer 1 on Dec. 17th, 2003 at the Wright Brothers National Monument. In addition is a nice collection of some of the letters that the Wright Brothers wrote and received during their years of experiment and inventing. Also included, a collection of original photographs that the Wrights took of their gliders, and later powered aircraft. To me, the highlight of the 2nd disk is the collection of early motion pictures that were taken by news reporters, the military and I would guess friends of the Wright's. I've seen bits and pieces of some of these Black and White moving pictures but to have the collection included in this 2 disk set was an unexpected bonus.

I would recommend this 2 disk set to anyone interested in early aviation history, and having a great documentary of the Wright Brothers and their experiments that concluded with the invention of the airplane.

A great piece of work created for the Centennial of Flight, 2003.

Kitty Hawk - The Wright Brothers' Journey of Invention
Very good documentary about the first flight at Kitty Hawk, NC. It is evident that alot of research and work went in to making this documentary. Particulary recreating the early experimental gliders. Old photographs combined with computer graphics help tell the story of how two young "average" Americans conquered the air. The narrator even continues the story after "Kitty Hawk". Providing information on what followed the first flight. Former astronaunts Neil Armstrong and John Glenn provide the voices of Orville and Wilbur Wright. It is clear that these two men were selected primarily for nostalgic reasons. The voices of men in their 80's don't quite match the Wright Brothers who were in their 30's. However, the story is told with great detail and deserves a place in every High School library. If you are looking for an entertaining film with literary filler this is not the movie for you. But, if you are looking for a clear and accurate account of the first flight, told in a documentary format, you will be very pleased. Great historical - I loved this film!

Can anything gigantic really be bad?
Wow. What a tour. The skating in this video is just sick. There's nothing so mind blowing that you'll never see something similar elsewhere, but there is definitely some progressive, creative, and overall ridiculous skating.

The lineup of skaters is awesome, with Mike Vallely, Bam Margera, Eric Koston, and of course, Tony Hawk, along with a mess of other pros and ams. You don't really get to see them at their best because of it being a demo atmosphere, where you don't get 6 months to test stuff out and film until you get it right, but there's still tons of worthwhile stuff in there.

If you just like human interest shows you'll enjoy it too. You get to see the stress touring causes both mentally and physically, as well as what they do on their days off (paintball, bowling, skating empty pools, ATV racing).

With 2 dvd's, its about 6 hours of film, and I watched it straight through without getting bored once. Its really a worthwhile purchase if you're a fan of skateboarding.

Tony Hawk's Trick Tips, Vol. 3: Secrets of Skateboarding
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (01 October, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Tony Hawk

Rockin' it oldskool with Tony and Mike V!
Now here's a retro twist on skateboarding instructional videos. A big grab bag of oldskool cool! Street tricks include: ollie grabs, half-cabs, ollie north, late shove-it, ollie finger flip, impossible, boneless, no-comply, pressure flips, street plants, acid drops, and bomb drops. Seeing these tricks again, expecially on a modern-day skate video, makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. I grew up on this stuff! The take home message: If it's fun, even if it's old, go for it!!!

The section with Bucky Lasek is a natural progression from the mini ramp skating we saw in the first two videos. This time the guys are out on a true vert ramp. Vert tricks include: dropping in, frontside airs, backside airs, air to fakie, fakie ollie, half-cab, rock to fakie, rock n' roll, inverts, and frontside tailslides.

Extras include: a lunch break with Tony (watch him scarf 6 hotdogs on a stick hehe), a parking lot session with Mike V, and the game of S-K-A-T-E pitting Tony vs. Bucky on the vert ramp. I had fun watching this DVD. I hope they put out at least one more, perhaps one that would focus on some advanced vert tricks like backside and frontside 540's, varials, flips, and maybe even 900's? Wuhahhahahhaha!

Lewis & Clark - The Journey of the Corps of Discovery
Released in DVD by PBS Home Video (28 August, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Ken Burns
Starring: Hal Holbrook and Adam Arkin
Another reliably well-crafted, generally engrossing documentary from Ken Burns, Lewis & Clark employs the director's now-familiar approach to his subjects, from its elegant juxtaposition of period illustrations and portraits against newly filmed footage of historic sites to Burns's repertory of accomplished actors to provide gravitas for quotes from the key figures. Granted the formula has become familiar enough to allow parody, but Burns knows how to invest his historical investigations with movement and drama, making this four-hour journey a worthwhile trip.

As narrated by Hal Holbrook, Dayton Duncan's script explicates the agenda presented by Thomas Jefferson to Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, placing it in the context of the young country's gamble in Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase, and the expedition's goals for opening the West. While preserving the heroic scale of the undertaking, Burns also finds time to delve into the politics of the venture and the disparate personalities of the two explorers; in particular, Duncan and Burns look at the career of Lewis, the presidential protégé, his moody demeanor, and his untimely death. The film also looks beyond its titular leaders to examine the personalities of their corps of soldiers, their boatmen, and the Indians they met and depended on, most notably their female Shosone guide, Sacagawea. --Sam Sutherland

Another American History Classic by Ken Burns
This is a pure classic of American History. Before Neil Armstrong and "Buzz" Aldrin" walked on the moon, Lewis and clark began a journey of equal importance over 150 years before. We are now approaching the bicentennial of that voyage. This journey is equal to the United States quest of the moon. In the video they commented that during the Apollo 13 emergency JIm Lovell and crew were in constant communication with mission control in Houston. Lewis and Clark were completeley isolated from Washington. Any communication would take weeks to travel.

In 1803 Thomas Jefferson Purchased the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon. Jefferson Comissioned his friend Merriwether Lewis to explore this new territory. Being a naturalist, Jefferson wanted Lewis to record all of the nature of this new area. His main purpose was to discover the northwest passage.

In 1804 Lewis and his partner William Clark set out along the missouri river. Ken Burns does a great job of capturing the beauty of this area. The Buffalo herds today were not any where near the size of the herds when lewis and clark first saw them. They also saw prarie chickens as well as prarie dogs. Lewis sent a couple of prarie dogs back to Jefferson.

Lewis and Clark never found the northwest passage, but they returned as heroes. Ken Burns includes what happened to Lewis and Clark after their journey, including the tragic suicide of Merriwether Lewis. The journey of Lewis and Clark was a major accomplisment for the young United States.

One of the Finest Documentaries Ever
I first saw this film on PBS quite by accident. I was channel surfing, and in a very restless mood. When I came upon it, what initially transfixed me was the spectacular photography. The sweeping vistas of the American West captured in this film are almost breathtaking. Then the narrative itself reeled me slowly into shore and I could not stop watching it. I have seen hundreds of documentaries over the years but few have made me almost forget that what I was watching and hearing was fact, not fiction. Ken Burns, the director, producer, and jack-of-trades behind this production has put forth a yeoman's effort nearly rivaling in vision what the explorers themselves were guided by. The film editing is superb--giving the story a variety of narrative voices needed to sustain it over such a lengthy project. I was especially impressed by the way the commentary of historians who have written on this monumental undertaking were added to the voices of the journals themselves. Even if you are not a history buff, you will enjoy and appreciate this film. It is instructive on many levels, both practical and spiritual. As others have said, its retelling is poignant, sensitive, and engaging, particularly in relating the fates of these men and women. This is one of those films you buy as a family investment, to share with the younger generation when they are ready to receive it.

A wonderful telling of one of the great American stories
This is another well-made documentary by Ken Burns. What I love most about his films is that they incorporate beautiful and relevant images and scenery with important quotes, figures, and anecdotes from the event in question. It would have been a difficult task to produce a four-hour documentary on this expedition--there were no photographs taken, and little physical evidence still exists from the trip. But the scenery is still there, and Burns makes ample use of it.

The best part about this documentary, however, is the characterization--not only of Lewis and Clark, but also of their men. This film portrays them as a closely-knit family, a band of brothers. And, most importantly, it shows that they were ALL heroes, down to the last and weakest of the men. Lewis and Clark are portrayed as the extraordinary individuals and talented leaders that they were, but the ugly side of both men is also apparent. Lewis and Clark were human, and this is one of the things that makes them such spectacular models of American spirit and courage. This film helps us to see Lewis and Clark, as well as Thomas Jefferson, as the great heroes they were.

Like Burns's documentaries on Mark Twain and the Civil War, this film successfully conveys the emotion, the feeling of the Lewis and Clark expedition. This is much more than just a rambling of dry historians or a rattling of dates and facts, this is a story. Most importantly, it is a true story, told in a true manner, one which will give inspiration and courage for many generations to come.

This DVD rocks
I borrowed my friends VHS copy of this and it ruled. The only problem is that the DVD version has a slightly different edit in some places, and the soundtrack has for the majority, been changed. However, the extras are pretty cool. Bottom line, is that both versions are great, but if you like rock/metal with your skating, get the VHS.

Great skating, great editing, some alterations
It's been mentioned again and again here that the range of styles is impressive and that many of the skate parts here just blow you away, but I'm surprised to see little mention of the editing on this video. It's amazing visually from beginning to end and the flow between parts just keeps it moving--something a longer skate video really needs not to make it seem excessive by the end of an hour. There are some editing and musical changes from the vhs version but I don't think it necessarily detracts from the overall effect of the video (sumner's part was the only real disappointment in that i think the original song by and you will know us by the trail of dead really added to it and kept with sumner's aggressive style but oh well). The making of documentary is great and the other extras had no trouble keeping me glued to the screen. Definitely worth buying!

greatest skate video yet
i love this video ive watched it like 100 times and just gets u pump and ready to skate get it and the skate parts in it are incredable and the extra content is cool to get this product if u love awsome street skatin and mad tricks buy bam margera tony hawk brainsuner and kenny anderson

Awesome, OUTDOES THE FIRST TWO!!!!
Even more excitement than the first 2. 2 flaws, they don't go to woodward and no Mat Hoffman, but other than that very cool.

Outdoes the other two
Just as good if not better than the first two. They go wakeskating, paintballing again, New Orleans(no nudity,DARN), Whitewater rafting,to a spa and more.

Tony Hawk¿s Gigantic Skatepark Tour 2002.
What a great collection of shows and extras! This series aired on ESPN in the latter half of 2002 and if you missed it, now is your chance to get it. Some of the highlights that stand out in my mind include Kerry Getz, Eric Koston, and Willy Santos getting SUPER tech all over the place; Mike V. destroying himself to pull off the gnarly stuff; Tony Hawk, Bob Burnquist, Bucky Lasek, and Shaun White just killin' it on vert. Basically, everyone on this tour rocks. Too many riders, tricks, locations, and situations to exhaustively list right here, so buy the DVD and check it all out for yourself!

Some of the more interesting extras that were never aired include Tony getting kidnapped by the B-team; Getz and Chalmers tearing up the real streets of St. Paul, MN; Kris Markovich and Sal Masekela getting ready to throw some blows after someone put something in someone's drink; and Bam's gruesome trip to the dentist (hey can I have that tooth?).

The current DVD format has more options compared to the 2000 and 2001 discs. You can now play all shows consecutively instead of just one at a time. You can also pick individual shows and navigate to specific tour stops therein. It is interesting that some of the original music in certain segments has been changed. I've always felt that skateboarding and video making are works of art and this kinda sets a different tone/mood when watching parts that I am thoroughly familiar with. Also, the "Best Of" segments, where the boyz are reminiscing about the tour, are not included. Anyhow, if you have the series taped as aired (and are cultish on anything and everything Hawk), you might want to hold on to those cassettes even after getting this DVD.

Sadly, this is probably the last of the "Gigantic Skatepark Tour" series, however, I do believe that the 2003 "Secret Skatepark Tour" will be coming to DVD soon. Check out Tony's website for details.

Gleaming the Cube

MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Graeme Clifford
Starring: Christian Slater and Steven Bauer

This movie s GREAT skater classic!
I enjoy watching this movie over and over because it is just too good. Christian Slater is the great lead skater boy in the film, and he's so young with spiked blond hair. I enjoy his performance as well as the other actors involved. I give this movie 4 stars because at some parts you can tell it's NOT Christian doing the stunts for the skating parts.

I recommend this movie to anyone who is BIG Christian Slater fan, like myself. I've been following and collecting his movies since I was eleven years old. I'm only twenty-one now, but I think I've been a fan for a while.

Go out and rent this or do whatever you can to get this movie. It's a keeper!

Dogtown and Z-Boys
Released in DVD by Columbia Tristar Hom (06 August, 2002)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Stacy Peralta
Starring: Sean Penn
In the early 1970s, a group of young surfers from a tough neighborhood south of Santa Monica took up skateboards and offhandedly changed the world. At least it appears so after watching Dogtown and Z-Boys, a documentary about how twelve "Z-Boys" (including one girl) resuscitated a dead sport and created a lifestyle that spread infectiously to become a worldwide counterculture phenomenon, namely high-flying "vert" (i.e. vertical) skateboarding and punk rock abandon. Director Stacy Peralta, one of the original Z-Boys, and Craig Steyck, the photographer whose publicity first made them famous, would have you believe that with empty pools as their springboard, the clan single-handedly carved a niche that grew into what is now referred to as "extreme sports" (snowboarding seems particularly implicated). Degrees of accuracy aside, the hoard of original footage Peralta and Steyck have access to makes for an engaging portrait of "accidental revolutionaries" whose mythology as expressed by themselves (all but one of the original crew give extensive interviews) and those they influenced (including Henry Rollins, Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam, and Sean Penn, who narrates) is far more entertaining than any evenhanded version could ever hope to be. --Fionn Meade

Awesome movie...even for non-skateboarders like me!
My brother-in-law lent us this DVD to watch. I ended up watching it twice in 2 days and then running out to get my own copy!

An absolutely fabulous documentary on the So. Cal. skateboarding scene in the 70's. Even if you don't skateboard, the stories on these athletes are riveting...in particular Jay Adams.

I can't say enough about the music in this movie. Great songs, one and all. Every song clicked perfectly with what was going on visually at the time.

Very impressive directorial work by Stacy Peralta.

Poetry in Motion
This movie is a love letter to a sport that to those of us who've never skated, helped us understand the passion these people feel for it. With it's absolutely breath-taking visuals, very artistic still photography, and killer sound track, who could resist but be a bit envious of these sunshine golden-boys and their awesome talent? Learning the history behind each person's humble beginnings, and how their passion for a fading trend, helped launch a counter-culture extreme sport is exhilirating to watch. I have a lot of skater friends, and none of them are getting any younger, knees have been ravaged and bones are weary. This film allows those folks, who grew up in this era, and equally loved to skate, relive the reasons that drew them to skating in the first place. To see someone's eyes light up, and catch a glimpse of the sparkle in them, that this awesome sport incites is really beautiful to behold. And the movie definately shows we "non-skaters" why these guys have so much love for their boards! The movie truly is a work of art, beautifully filmed, with actual footage from the era, still photograghy that any world-reknowned photgragher would envy....watching it will make you want to go and grab a board and at least TRY and feel the love!! I just had tickets to Tony Hawk's Boom-Boom Huck Jam exhibition, and seeing this film, showed me he may be the Michael Jordan of the skate world, but he is simply carrying the torch, in a sport where it's founding fathers were all plain old kids from middle-class neighborhoods, who loved something enough, to help turn the sport into what it is today!!!! A MUST see movie!!!!!!!

Awesome Old School
This movie was the best overall skate documentary that I have ever seen. It showed everything about the gang. I reccomend it to anyone who loves true skateboard videos. It shows all of their struggles to big-time skatin'. Buy this movie!
