The Crime of Padre Amaro
Released in DVD by Columbia Tristar Hom (22 April, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Carlos Carrera
Starring: Gael García Bernal, Sancho Gracia, and Ana Claudia Talancón
This controversial film follows a handsome young priest, Padre Amaro (played by Gael Garcia Bernal from Y Tu Mamá También and Amores Perros), who arrives in a small town and finds himself surrounded by hypocrisy and corruption--and also finds himself tempted by a beautiful young woman who confesses that when she "touches herself," she thinks of Jesus. What makes El Crimen del Padre Amaro (The Crime of Father Amaro) particularly effective is that Amaro is no innocent--he skillfully forces a newspaper publisher to retract a scandalous story about the Church and is willing to take extreme steps to preserve his career. Some of the movie's harsher digs at the Catholic Church have provoked accusations of prejudice; but though Padre Amaro portrays a world in which no one's hands are clean, it also finds redeeming qualities in every character. A complex, completely engrossing movie. --Bret Fetzer

The sin that has been the same throu the years.
Believe it or not, the Padre Amaros's crime, which in my opinion should be also called, "sin of Padre Amaro", does not have anything new, except for the fact, that this old novel has been taken to the big screen. This caused a big controversy not only in Mexico, but worldwide. The feelings of thousands of people have been hurt with this explicit film where its shows the reality of a part of the catholicism. Crowds demostraited their anger, right in front of the theatres where the film was playing. The Padre Amaro's crime is not an aisled case, for the last decade we have seen too many cases around the world and in particular in USA where a crime has less impunity.

The controversy of Padre Amaro's Movie.
The crime of Padre Amaro is a movie based on novel wrote last century, that relates the controversial behavior of a young priest recently ordenaded, who was sent to a small town in rural Mexico. In his arrival to the town he met a pretty young woman with very strong religios believes and faith. Padre Amaro came to this comunity to help the old priest who was runinig the church for a long time but Padre Amaro found out that too many things were wrong, he starts trying to fix everything but he relaized that was almost impossible to change the sistem. He found conexion religion-narcs, and even he discovered the affair in between the old priest and a mature woman who had a restaurante in town. After a while Padre Amaro began runing the church in the same way and under the protection of the cardenal, soon he knew that he was in the middle of a mafia. Besides he fell in love with the religios woman and both of them gave up into a pationary relation-ship. Finally she died by accident while trying to have an abortion and nobody knew what really happened because Padre Amaro never told the truth.
This is a good movie in my opinion, because it keeps you interested since the begining to the end.
It is amazing how the directors could create this movie based on a novel and spacially at this time when the world is suffering a religios crisis, in particular the christianism.
At this time in USA we know about a lot of cases that relate with Padre Amaro. So the movie was on big screen for several weeks becoming a hit while controversy is still a topic to talk about.

2002, Father Amaro Picture makes it big in Mexico!
Evaluation of the Movie:

This is a Movie that will make one think.
There is just so much controversy on the issue
that will be shown here in this movie. I want
to say that this movie was a blockbuster hit
in Mexico, it made history at the box office.
The movie deals with Manipulation of words
and situation for convenience, money, love,
lust, and the love of a woman toward a priest
that really is just a no no, but occurs.
This movie has to be approaced at a higher level
of thinking when viewing this film. "The Crime of
Father Amaro" is a recommended movie to All who read
this review. In the end, man is just evil by himself.
This film
just involves the greed of man, and the temptations of life
in where many fall, and is sure is
the case with the young Father Amaro who falls to the pleasures of the flesh.
This film is truthful, and realistic, and this story was
written in 1847 if one pays attention to the detail when
the movie is beginning. In the end, Man is Evil, and without
Jesus Christ they are just damned. The characters in this
story were not devout Christ Catholic followers of Christ
and about his word only, but followers of their own lustful greed actions for power/control, and pleasure for flesh.
In the end, one will find out that no one in real life on
this earth by viewing this film will like to be told the truth.
The real true preachers who preach the Gospel on this planet are the ones who behave well in all daily actions-public and private, and who interpret the Word, and Most importantly always mention 24-7 Christ in a positive light.

The ending storywise in this
motion picture will surprise all-You cannot miss this movie-
El Crimen del Padre Amaro-The Crime of Father Amaro.
This movie will make you think that there is a darkside out there in this world, a world that many just want to blind
because they just say so. The truth is the key, because lies just build over more lies, and get the characters of this story into a big vortex(black hole) of hurt.

Other films i recommend to readers who are reading this
post, movies that i consider to be good are:

1. Solaris-George Clooney
2. Swimfan-Erika Christensen
3. L'Ennui-Sophie Guillimien

5. Lawnmower Man-Pierce Brosnan

Seeking Asylum
Released in DVD by Image Entertainment (18 May, 1999)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Marco Ferreri
Young Roberto Benigni plays a nonconformist kindergarten teacher who brings his brand of creative chaos to the classroom in Marco Ferreri's comic drama. This is a much calmer Benigni than the hyperactive rubber-face we're used to, but though he manages to play the entire film reigned in at second gear, he takes just as many wild turns. In one scene he tries to convince his young charges that he's pregnant. In another he drops them off at the gate of the factory where their parents work and skedaddles out of sight to watch the fun. The title refers to a young runaway Roberto "adopts," but it could just as easily apply to Roberto himself, who seems to seek refuge from the real world in his little child-like paradise--in one scene he guiltlessly extricates himself from any responsibility when he gets his girlfriend pregnant. At times it comes off like an episodic sketch comedy as directed by John Cassavetes: comic scenes drag out into uneasy character dramas and uncomfortable confrontations, only to jump into the next lighthearted segment. Benigni cuts a cheerfully sincere (if indulgently irresponsible) figure in this pre-hysterical period of his career and pulls together this offbeat character drama with good humor and plenty of heart. Fans of the bouncing-off-the-walls Begnini may be better served with the slapstick Johnny Stecchino or his two collaborations with American director Jim Jarmusch: Down by Law and Night on Earth. --Sean Axmaker

Benigni, e la sua bomba
This movie was horrible. If you are expecting to see the same Roberto that we all love in Life is Beautiful, The Monster, and Johnny Stechino this movie is not for you. Seeking Asylum was very slow moving with very little humor what so ever. In fact, this movie is so bad that it will turn you off on Benigni. So if you are a Benigni fan skip this one for your own good.

Difficult to watch
Being a Benigni fan, I purchased this video on faith. The film and sound quality are poor and the plot difficult/impossible to follow. With three of us watching, we had to stop the tape to discuss what was going on; not because we were enthralled, but because we were lost.

Decent
For all of you die-hard Benigni fans out there, this is a must have. However, don't expect to see the same sort of acting style that has made Roberto famous. This is an offbeat film where Roberto plays a cooky kindergarden teacher. Benigni's character experiments with his teaching by amusing the children in crazy ways, like bringing in a donkey as their class mascot. Nonetheless, Benigni plays it straight whithout the witty humor we have grown to love Benigni for. It is a lovely tale with various side plots. I wouldn't reccomend this film to somebody who is just getting to know Benigni, because it will turn him off. But if you are already a fan, this may interest you. Just be aware that the visual and audio quality of this low-budget 1979 film is poor.
