Men in Black (Collector's Series) - DTS
Released in DVD by Columbia Tri-Star (05 September, 2000)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Barry Sonnenfeld
Starring: Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith
This imaginative summer comedy from director Barry Sonnenfeld (Get Shorty) is a lot of fun, largely on the strength of Will Smith's engaging performance as the rookie partner of a secret agent (Tommy Lee Jones) assigned to keep tabs on Earth-dwelling extraterrestrials. There's lots of comedy to spare in this bright film, some of the funniest stuff found in the margins of the major action. (A scene with Smith's character being trounced in the distance by a huge alien while Jones questions a witness is a riot.) The inventiveness never lets up, and the cast--including Vincent D'Onofrio doing frighteningly convincing work as an alien occupying a decaying human--hold up their end splendidly. --Tom Keogh

Original, funny, and wildly comic--Thumbs up
Men in Black is a funny film. Tommy Lee is great as the straight man and Will Smith delivers as the eager know-it-all. Who knew they had such chemistry together? Great premise, plot, pacing, and characters! Don't miss it.

Very funny, original movie
This movie has such an original idea and is so funny! It harkens back to Ghostbusters. I just wish they wouldn't release it many different times in different DVD sets.

ENTERTAINMENT AT ITS BEST!
Are there extraterrestrials living among us? Is your next door neighbor one? How about the manager of your local supermarket?
Ah.....these are the questions you may be asking yourself after watching this outsanding movie, " Men In Black."
Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, Secret Agents who are secretely keeping the aliens that live on earth in line, are our main players in this movie along with many yucky creepy aliens from God only knows where. When one of these aliens threatens our world the action begins and the battle between alien and earthmen heats up.
This movie had great special effects, great acting and many downright laugh outloud times. It was outstanding entertainment for the entire family and a movie that you would not mind seeing over and over again.

The Faculty
Released in DVD by Dimension Home Video (06 May, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Robert Rodriguez
Starring: Jordana Brewster and Clea DuVall
Okay, you knew everyone in high school was just a little different: everyone looked at you strangely, the teachers were freaky, and you never could find the right groove to fit into. What if it turned out that it was all because your school was inhabited by creepy aliens from outer space? That's the enjoyably cheesy B-premise for this fun and scary flick from the pen of Scream's Kevin Williamson, the master of the post-modern teen horror film. Directed by Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi), it's The Breakfast Club meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers, as six disparate students from Herrington High School band together when they discover that an alien life form is invading both the student and faculty bodies, with plans to take over the world.

Each of the heroes represents a different high school type: popular babe (Jordana Brewster), picked-on geek (Elijah Wood), goth girl (Clea DuVall), sensitive jock (Shawn Hatosy), new kid in town (Laura Harris), and bad-boy rebel (Josh Hartnett). The plot isn't much--a basic kill-or-be-killed premise spiked with a healthy shot of paranoia--but Willliamson and Rodriguez do a great job of building the tension slowly but surely. The suspense set pieces are genuinely frightening, and the film pokes fun at itself without deflating its scares; Williamson is a master at shifting gears from comedy to horror quickly and adroitly. The young cast doesn't have a weak link among them (with special kudos to Wood, DuVall and heartthrob-in-the-making Hartnett), and Rodriguez gets maximum mileage from the titular faculty, which includes Jon Stewart, Piper Laurie, Salma Hayek, Bebe Neuwirth, and Robert Patrick of Terminator 2. Go to the head of the class, Mr. Williamson. --Mark Englehart

a what the hell is going on around school flick
very impressed with how this movie played out. there where some annoyinh scenes and then there where some gorey and cool scenes. without a doubt Josh Hartnett(Hollywood Homicide) stands out in this picture as the rebel kid and Elijah Wood(The ICe Storm) is great as the geeky kid. the alien at the end is really a let down though thats not the reason I liked the movie, I liked it on the premise of paranoia and the chills you get when one of those alien things comes out of the peoples ears. Jordana Brewster, CleaDuvall, Jon Stewart, Shawn Hastosy, Robert Patrick, Famke Janssen, Usher Raymond, BeBe Neuwirth, Salma Hayek and others also star

The Faculty
This movie was great but I thought it was a little too gruesome. but it has now become my favorite movie.

Our Teachers Are Aliens!!!
I am a very big fan of Robert Rodrigues films!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The kids don't know it but there teachers are behaving strangly and are ALIENS! This all revolves around the kids: The preppie girl, sports jock, goth girl, geek, and trouble maker. They now realizes that they must stop the queen, but the only problem is that they don't know who the queen is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ACTION PACKED THRILL RIDE describes this movie best!!!!!!!!!

Cube
Released in DVD by Lions Gate Home Ente (15 April, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Vincenzo Natali
Starring: Nicole de Boer, Nicky Guadagni, David Hewlett, Andrew Miller, and Maurice Dean Wint
If Clive Barker had written an episode of The Twilight Zone, it might have looked something like Cube. A handful of strangers wake up inside a bizarre maze, having been spirited there during the night. They quickly learn that they have to navigate their way through a series of chambers if they have any hope of escape, but the problem is that there are lethal traps awaiting if they choose their route unwisely. Having established some imaginative and grisly punishments in store for the hostages, cowriter and director Vincenzo Natali turns his attention to the characters, for whom being trapped amplifies their best and worst qualities. The film is, in fact, similar to a famous episode of Rod Serling's old television series, though Natali's explanation for why these poor people are being put through hell is a lot closer to the spirit of The X-Files. Cube has some solid moments of suspense and drama, and the sets are appropriately striking: one is tempted to believe at first the characters are lost inside a computer chip. --Tom Keogh

What a big disappointment
I've heard so much about this movie in the last year,so I thought I'd give it a shot. And boy,was I let down.It was dull, boring and pointless.I couldn't get a damn about who lived and who died,I liked only one thing about the movie and that's the first death in the film.I know alot of people love this film and some people (like me) didn't.But,to each his/her own right?

Canadian Indie Flick Is Definitely Not Square!
Although the plot of this low-budget Canadian indie flick could be defined, at its rawest level, as a typical watch-your-back or who-can-you-trust paranoia story, CUBE actually rises above its cliché foundation to become a very clever and engaging sci-fi thriller. One of the reasons the film seems so fresh and original is the setting. CUBE takes place inside of a giant metal cubic structure, which is itself composed of thousands of smaller cube-like rooms. It is possible for occupants to navigate the structure by passing from one room into adjacent cubes through portals on each a cubic room's six sides, but such travel is not without its dangers. Some of the rooms are booby-trapped with deadly devices. And from time to time, the myriad of cubic rooms shift their positions within the larger structure.

The actual story centers on a group of seven people--each with a different lifestyle and background and each therefore a stranger to the others--who awaken to find themselves together in one of the many cubic rooms, but with no recollection of how they arrived there. They soon learn that they must reach the outside of the cube-shaped prison if they want to survive--most importantly, they have no access to food or water--and as their journey through the structure progresses, they realize that each of them has some unique talent that contributes to their ability to map a safe route through the overall structure. However, as one might expect, they do not trust each other, and the resulting paranoia eventually leads to....

Sci-Fi and STAR TREK fans will be interested in watching the excellent performance of the cute and sexy Nicole de Boer, who would later go on to recurring roles on TV's STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE and THE DEAD ZONE. Here she portrays a gifted mathematician whose talent is central to solving the riddle of escape from the cube. Genre fans, especially those who watch lots of TV, may also recognize Maurice Dean Wint, who plays the primary antagonist in CUBE. He has had guest roles in numerous Sci-Fi and Horror television series, including FOREVER KNIGHT, THE OUTER LIMITS, ROBOCOP, and FRIDAY THE 13th, just to name a few.

Few low-budget films are as literate or as engaging as CUBE. What's even more impressive is that the filmmakers have created such a high-quality and entertaining Sci-Fi flick without relying on the usual inordinate amount of special FX. A good story, an appropriate or interesting setting, and good actors--those are the basic ingredients for all successful films. Anything else is mere window dressing. And CUBE proves that you don't need too much window dressing to hold an intelligent audience.

Excellent horror film!!
Six strangers awake to find themselves in a seemingly endless maze of interlocking cubical chambers armed with lethal booby traps. With no food or water, they only have a few days to live. None of them have any idea why or how they became imprisoned, but soon discover that each of them possesses a skill that could contribute to their escape. However, tempers flare when their is a fight for leadership. But as they fight to free themselves, they come to realize that unless they can work together, none of them will get out alive.

"Cube" is one of those films that you assume will be horrible because of the unknown actors and the fact that it came straight to video. However, do not let that keep you from watching this film. It is by far one of the most suspenseful and scary films that I have ever seen before. You never get bored or frustrated, despite the fact that all of the characters are put in a frustrating situaion. I was on the edge of my seat! All of the actors are quite good considering that they are all unknown. The emotion that all of them portray is extremely realistic. Also, all of the characters each have different personalities as well that you will find entertaining. Watching them slowly lose their minds is great. Perhaps the best feature of the film, is the cube itself. It is one of the best set designs I have ever seen. Every booby trap is set off differently, and all are extremely lethal. Not only is each booby trap different, but the color, size, and shape of the rooms are as well.

"Cube" is one of the most suspenseful films you ever see. The acting, story, and cube itself are all done to perfection. The DVD extras are actually decent. You get deleted scenes, comparative and alternate storyboards, production design, schematic set design, special effects artwork, and production commentary. Plus the quality of the film is excellent. Definately a must own

Blade II - New Line Platinum Series
Released in DVD by New Line Home Entertainment (07 October, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Guillermo del Toro
Starring: Wesley Snipes and Kris Kristofferson
Aptly described by critic Roger Ebert as "a vomitorium of viscera," Blade II takes the express route to sequel success. So if you enjoyed Blade, you'll probably drool over this monster mash, which is anything but boring. Set (and filmed) in Prague, the plot finds a new crop of "Reaper" vampires threatening to implement a viral breeding program, and they're nearly impervious to attacks by Blade (Wesley Snipes), his now-revived mentor Whistler (Kris Kristofferson), and a small army of "normal" vampires who routinely combust in a constant conflagration of spectacular special effects. It's up to Blade to conquer the über-vamps, and both Snipes and director Guillermo del Toro (Mimic) serve up a nonstop smorgasbord of intensely choreographed action, creepy makeup, and graphic ultraviolence. It's sadistic, juvenile, numbing, and--for those who dig this kind of thing--undeniably impressive. With the ever-imposing Ron Perlman as a vampire villain. --Jeff Shannon
Average review score:

A somewhat worthy sequel.
This film, though not as good as the original, is a marvel of special effects. The plot is less coherent (and, ultimately, less believable) and moves a bit more slowly. What's missing here is some originality. We've seen most of this in the first Blade movie.

Rental only. Buy if you're a fan of the series.

An exhausting experience...
Let me first say that I'm against this new action movie craze in which the heroes and villains are always squaring off in Matrix-style kung fu action. It's a trend that's simply getting dull and boring; not to mention some of it looks downright cheesy. The first Blade had a glimmer of this attribute even though it was out before the Matrix so, as most sequels do, Blade II tried to outdo it's predecessor by throwing in more action sequences with even more of this Matrix-esque kung fu action. But you know what? It rocks.

What we have here is a non-stop gore fest served up to near perfection by the talent of Guillermo Del Toro and Wesley Snipes who makes Blade, in my opinion, the coolest horror movie protagonist since Ash from the Evil Dead films. Granted, there's nothing really terrifying in either of the Blade movies to qualify as real horror, but you get the idea. This guy sports a long leather jacket, a pair of shades, a badass sword and a plethora of sharp objects. And he kills vampires. Lots of vampires. In his second outing, he has more of a sense of humor and is kind of starting to enjoy what he does (in the same way that Ash progressed between Evil Dead and Army of Darkness). Thusly, this makes his character more enjoyable and easier to root for. Simply put, he rules.

The villain in the second Blade outing is a lot more wicked than Deacon Frost was in the first. This time we have this thing called a "Reaper" who can't be killed as easily as a normal vampire and is also not as easy to look at. This guy is ugly with a capital "F." He's also a much better fighter than Frost was and, to a lesser extent, a little scarier which makes him a lot easier to hate. But in a strange way, he's a tragic figure who you almost feel bad for. Not to get sentimental, but it's not his fault he is the way he is and you'd really like to see him carry out HIS mission before Blade turns him into vampire soup.

The casting of supporting players is also terrific. Kris Kristofferson and Ron Perlman are a blast to watch.

As far as the title of my review goes, well, this is a sweat-inducing movie that rarely lets up. The action is fast-paced and the editing is hyper to the point of almost breaking the reel. But it's not that MTV type stuff we've all come to get sick of. I won't lie and say that the action comes out as poetic as some of John Woo's early stuff, but it comes pretty darn close. The action is certainly crazy, but even when there aren't bullets, blood and limbs flying around, there's a sense of "can I trust this guy?" throughout the film. Blade has to work with a band of leather clad vampires to stop the reapers, so they're not exactly the best team to pair up. And because of this animosity between the vampires and Blade, despite the fact that they need each other to carry out the mission, you just never know when one will suddenly turn on the other.

Blade II is an almost perfect action movie, but some of the CGI work is a little offbeat and doesn't blend well with the real action. Plus, even if this is an action/fantasy movie, there's no way in the world Blade's sunglasses could have stayed on his face during his fight with the Reaper. You'll agree once you see what I'm talking about. Oh, well. Small potatoes. The rumors are true: this is the best action movie of 2002.

Just awesome
A tremendous movie from Guillermo del Toro.....the action and special effects are top notch. If all out dazzling action is your thing then this one is for you.

Titan A.E. - Special Edition
Released in DVD by Twentieth Century Fox Home Video (06 March, 2001)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Directors: Don Bluth, Gary Goldman, and Art Vitello
Starring: Drew Barrymore and Matt Damon
A visual knockout, Titan A.E. is an ambitious animated feature that combines traditional animations, computer-generated imagery, and special effects in the service of a science fiction adventure plotted with narrative conventions familiar from Star Wars and Star Trek. Credit directors Don Bluth (An American Tail, The Secret of NIMH, Anastasia) and Gary Goldman with crafting a vivid, convincing look to this deep space saga, which conjures some stunning images. A tense opening sequence climaxing in the destruction of Earth, a watery planet where delicate but deadly hydrogen trees float, joyriding in a starship while pursued by playful "space angels," and a nerve-wracking journey through a lethal maze of massive ice crystals each qualify as mesmerizing sequences in any film context.

What's visually stunning proves intermittently stunted on the narrative front, however. Orphaned when the evil Drej atomize Earth, protagonist Cale (voiced by Matt Damon) must journey across space to unlock the mystery of his late father's final project, the Titan spacecraft, in a test of faith and filial identity that echoes Star Wars. The Titan itself ultimately poses a cosmic potential familiar to admirers of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Comical sidekicks (Nathan Lane, Janeane Garofalo, John Leguizamo), a sultry love interest (Drew Barrymore), and a roguish mentor (Bill Pullman) all verge on the generic, narrowly redeemed by dialogue from a writing team including Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon.

It's likely that Titan's target audience of young males prompted the filmmakers to walk a tightrope between softer family features and more violent, hard-edged anime. Titan's brief bloodshed and coy nudity stop short of PG-13 terrain, though younger viewers might be unsettled by the violence. Young teens will find the proceedings tamer than the video games and anime fantasies that have influenced it. --Sam Sutherland

Ok, so at age 24 I'm a bit out of the intended audience for this show, but I still found myself greatly enjoying it. The plot doesn't hold up very well, but it's simply a very fun and fast paced movie (which, if I'm thinking correctly, is what most films are supposed to be.)

The soundtrack is a bit grating, but overall, just enjoy this one. But don't think too hard about it.

A real space gem.

Revolutionary Animation At Best
It calmly came and went in theaters a couple years ago, and maybe that's why Titan A.E. is so appealing: it doesn't try to outdo itself or copy others work, and is both eye candy and classic characters in one simply wonderful package.

Titan A.E. follows the tale of an ambitious young space rogue named Cale Tucker, and is set in the 31st century. After the earth is destroyed by alien Drej, Cale is embedded by his father as the savior of all earthlings in the universe, a savior to construct a second earth for all the earthlings; earthlings now living on drifter colonies space ships scattered through the galaxy. However, this is not an easy task: the Drej scum want Cale killed before he can establish a new humanoid planet, and this turns Cale into a human McGuffin. This movie basically follows Cale on his adrenaline rush search through the Galaxy to find the means to rebuild this Titan 'After Earth,' and the plot is rather structurally simple: get from point A to point B before the badguys do first.

This does not, however, diminish from the fun. It never appears to be simplistic on the surface; indeed, it would just be annoying to analyze every plot twist to fit to the basic plot structure. This movie is designed to distract you away from that increasingly annoying display of average movie range.

One of the ways these distractions may happen is the simply beautiful background design, based off of photos courtesy of the Hubble Space Telescope. I couldn't help but utter "cool..." at some scenes, especially the ending sequences. I'm telling you, this movie is sheer eye candy.

The character interaction between the key players in the movie is well done, and there is also a little touch of a love story in the movie as well. The crew on board the ship, the one Cale uses to travel about in, ranges from sour to creepy to just plain cool in the characteristic aspect, and layers of medium-toned character development are present from beginning to end. A definite strong point of Titan A.E.'s storytelling is the ability to have more than adequate storytelling right off the bat. For example, in the movie Cale has an old alien friend that watches after him. All it takes is 30 seconds for you to begin liking that rather 'incidental' character. This is one of the things that have levitated this movie to it's popularity: when this friend of Cale's is put in potential danger five minutes into the movie, you fear that certain friend is going to be hurt.

This movie could be said to be based off 'Treasure Island,' because of definite same plot twist proportions. For instance, Cale has a map that everybody's vying for, resembling Jim Hawkins won map, and another character called Korso could be said to based off of Long John Silver. Completely coincidental or not, it works without a doubt and provides clever fun comparing the movie with the famous book.

This movie isn't really violent. There was a scene at the beginning were our hero Cale is clipped by wild blaster fire, and there is a gash in his arm, but the whole movie isn't like this. Mostly the heroic characters are blasting Drej, and Drej are blue and shiny and break similarly to the way a crystal would if dropped. So this movie isn't really violent or offensive. There is a scene of brief, coy nudity, but besides that not much is not suitable for the whole given family.

All these reasons add up to a great movie that shouldn't be passed up if you find it. It isn't worth renting, because even in the unlikely event you find yourself consistently hating the plot, characters and animation, the special effects and sound effects, mixed with the catchy music and background modeling make this movie a piece of animation worth having.
