Blue's Clues - Shapes And Colors
Released in DVD by Paramount Home Video (03 June, 2003)
MPAA Rating: G (General Audience)
Directors: Bruce Caines, John Rowe (VII), Lucy Walker, Elizabeth Holder, Koyalee Chanda, Nancy Keegan, Paul Zehrer, Daniel Silverman (II), and Alan Zdinak
Starring: Steve Burns
Joe and his friend Blue tackle the preschool basics of circles, rectangles, even trapezoids while sorting through Blue's hints as to where she would like most to see more shapes in "Shape Searchers." If the clues cash register, cart, and food don't add up for you, the kid chorus will help you out. The second episode finds the pair in their backyard making a "portrait of pals," a painting of their many-colored friends. But they only have primary colors, so in order to paint Orange Kitten, for instance, they have to mix red and yellow. Joe makes the most of this opportunity for a color lesson with the assistance of Shovel, who turns out to be a superb artist without the help of a brush. Who knew? (Ages 2 to 6) --Kimberly Heinrichs

My 2 1/2 year old now knows his colors
My son loves this tape, he'll ask to watch it almost everyday. He has learned his colors and alot of shapes. The music is alot of fun too. This tape is a winner in our house!!!

My toddler loves it.
The only reason I'm giving this DVD 4 stars is that I prefer Steve to Joe, but this is a wonderful DVD, full of fun images and music that any child will love. (Parents, too.)

Great for learning shapes and colors!
This is my 24-month old daughter's first Blue video, and she loves it! The focus on shapes and colors is very appropriate for her age, and she has become quite good at naming them since she began watching this.

Pilot Candidate - Working Together (Vol. 3)
Released in DVD by Pioneer Video (05 March, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Hongo Mitsuru
As training continues at the Academy, Zero's special ability--his extraordinary speed--comes to the fore when he's paired with a senior candidate, the telepathic Erts Cocteau. They make an effective duo, fighting together in the test mecha, the Pro-Ings. Erts sees into Zero's rather simple psyche and approves of his single-minded dedication to becoming a pilot. But their partnership proves short-lived: Erts is promoted to commissioned pilot when his older brother Ernest is killed in a battle with the alien Victim. (Zero's rivalry with Hiead falls by the wayside during these episodes.) The designs of both the Pro-Ings and Ingrids are flashy and dramatic, but they're badly animated: the supposedly huge, multi-ton machines have no weight when they move. Rated 13 Up: Violence, minor profanity, tobacco use. --Charles Solomon

Confusing
I found this anime very confusing. Like most animes the episodes can seem confusing but they reveal themselves in the end. What makes this anime even more confusing is that it has a cliff hanger ending and it never really reveals itself in the end.

good mix of drawn and cgi
Had seen it on Cartoon Network, and wanted to see what it was like unedited. Only thing I don't like about it, is the fact that they appear to not have finished the story.

This anime is great!!! I wish everyone would love it!!!!!
In the future, mankind lost 4 planets due to a terrible mistake. They reteated to space and built colonies, huge domes with glass protecting it. There is only one planet left, Zion. The alien form known as VICTIM is out to destoy it. So.....

Mankind built huge mechas called Ingrids or Goddesses. The candidates must first train to become one of the 5 Goddess pilots. They go to the Goddess Opperating Accademy or GOA. And when they become pilots they go to GIS. And.....
To be a candidate you have to have the abiltity of EX. Having a reaction to such a power turns your hair teal. It may be telepathy or the power to move fast without being seen. OK.....

The story follows 5 candidates. The main character is Zero Enna. He is a hyper boy and can't stop talking about his dream to pilot the White Ingrid that saved him when he was younger. He has a rival named Hiead and friends Yamagi, Roose, Clay, and another senior named Erts whose brother is a pilot.
Zero and his classmates train and live on GOA. And the story also go into the lives of the pilots. Now...

I love the anime and I'm getting the DVDs. It came on Adult Swim on Cartoon Network but was cancelled for some strange reason.
Get it because it's in space and space is COOL!!!!

Mountains of the Moon

Starring: Patrick Bergin and Iain Glen

Sanitized History...
Though I give it credit for fine acting and cinematography, this film is yet another example of a long list of films that disturbingly sanitize history. Anyone who has done any critical research on this subject will quickly discover that Burton and Speke hated each other well before the expedition ever began. What is more, Speke never married nor had children and there is evidence to suggest that he was probably homosexual. In addition, the interpersonal relationships between the characters in the film are grossly skewed to support the filmmaker's desire to produce a film that is not rooted in historical accuracy. Finally, Speke's death is portrayed as a suicide and any evidence that exists as to Burton having possibly murdered him is practically non-existent in the film. Again, a sad film in my opinion for butchering history into some type of myopic re-presentation. Booooo!

Whatever happened to Patrick Bergin?
This movie is fantastic, that is until it decides to roam aimlessley through history, picking up bits of plot from Speke's consequent journey, and discarding the events of the first expedition entirely. This movie should by seen by people whoe either have no idea of what actually occurred, or by people who have a complete idea of what occurred, otherwise one would become completely lost. The viewer has no sense of time or place, only through casual reference, sometimes none at all, is the chronology or place of events given to the viewer. Anyone who thought the plot of this movie was good should immediately read "The White Nile" by Alan Moorehead for more casual reading, or the journals of Burton and Speke themselves to realized the travesty of diverting the plot. Why do screenwriters insist on changing history when the history is far better than anything their pea brains can come up with? I will never know. However, despite the historical indolence, the movie does have superb casting, dialogue, and cinematography, I know why the Coen brothers always use Roger Deakins as their DP, the man is a genius. But what the hey ever happened to Patrick Bergin? He is fantastic in this movie, it seems to me that "Sleeping with the Enemy" killed his potentially great career. But then again I havent seen any of his other work, so maybe his career is as great as it should be. Mountains of the Moon, although badly titled, since the movie has absolutely nothing to do with the Ruwenzori mountains(mtns. of the moon), is a good movie, but the divergence of history cannot be overlooked says me. When are they going to make a Samuel Baker movie? That's what I want to know.

Excellence!!
I first saw this movie in 1991 and instantly fell in love, wishing I could go out and dicover something as monumental as the source for the Nile River. The acting in this movie is stupendous, Patrick Bergin as "Richard Burton", Iain Glen as "John Speke", and Fiona Shaw as Burton's wife,(I forgot here name in the movie), they all deserve Oscars for their performances. This movie was highly overlooked by hollywood and that is a huge mistake by them, this movie could and should have won best picture honors. The scenery is breathtaking the way it is filmed and the history is potrayed in a fairly accurate light. This movie should be on everybody's top ten list.

Three Wishes
Released in DVD by Hbo Studios (07 August, 2001)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Martha Coolidge
Starring: Patrick Swayze and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio
What happens when a widowed mother and her two sons invite an injured drifter into their home? Put aside those modern, jaded visions of a psychotic killer on the rampage and enter the gentler, yet extremely rigid world of 1955 Suburbia USA. Jeanne Holman has lost her husband to the Korean War and is doing her best to support her family in a community that reveres conformity and frowns upon anyone who dares to be different. As Jeanne questions her chosen path, her oldest son Tom struggles to fit in with his peers and her youngest son, Gunny, who's frightened of virtually everything, is soon to be diagnosed with a serious illness. Enter a chance encounter with drifter Jack McCloud and his dog Betty Jane, and the pair temporarily move in with the Holman family. What essentially begins as one woman's act of guilt-induced charity evolves into a magical journey of personal growth for each family member. The end result is a wish come true for everyone involved. This film has widespread appeal: there's romance, magic, physical and spiritual journeys, self-revelation, and even a celebration of diversity and personal strength. The PG rating seems apt due to the film's intensity and one short almost nude scene. --Tami Horiuchi

Fails to deliver
This film has been billed as a "touching", "family" film. I beg to differ. I bought the film mainly because it has a couple of my favorite performers: Patrick Swayze and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. They both did a fine job in this film, but it just wasn't enough. What I failed to notice when I bought this movie was the HBO logo on the back of the box. When I popped the DVD into my player and the HBO logo came up on the screen I knew I was sunk. I have never yet seen an HBO film that I thought was worth watching. This was no exception. In my humble opinion HBO should have never gotten into the movie business.

Twenty minutes into the film I was asking myself: "Does this movie have a point?". Thirty minutes, same question. An hour later, same question. FINALLY, at the end of the movie, the point of the film comes out and by that time I'm just glad it's over. To those who say this is a family film for kids, I would dearly love to do the following science experiment: get a diverse cross section of a hundred kids and put 'em in a room and start up this film. By the end of the film measure how many are still in the room (and awake). Anybody want to place some bets?

There are plenty of excellent, "feel good" movies out there. This sadly is not one of them unless, perhaps, you are a junky of the genre. Best to rent before buying, or give a miss altogether.

starts good then pancakeville
well this movie starts out exellent and one can only wonder what would happened if it staid on this track because by the end of the first half hour it becomes boring and mindless. This was very unfortunate because it started out with some great ideas but very quickly lost its way. This was very frustrating because i saw its potential.

This One Is A Real Tear Jerker... Not For Faint At Heart!
I have seen this movie two times and am purchasing it on DVD, because it deserves to be in my collection. This movie is awesome, if you have kids its a must see!

Macross Plus - Movie Edition
Released in DVD by Wea Corp (28 May, 2002)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Directors: Shinichirô Watanabe and Shôji Kawamori
A recut version of the four-part OAV (1994), the Macross Plus movie plays like a mixture of Top Gun, Gundam Wing, and Key the Metal Idol. It's 2040 on the planet Eden: former high school rivals Isamu Dyson and half-human/half-Zentraedi Guld Goa Bowman have become rival mecha test pilots. They're also still competing for the affection of Myung Lone, the producer for cybernetic singing sensation Sharon Apple. When an illegal "bio-neural" chip is implanted into the computer that generates Sharon, she becomes sentient, attacking Myung and attempting to lure Isamu to his death. Wild and crazy Isamu and serious Guld defeat the plot with their hotshot piloting. The film boasts elaborate computer-animated special effects and exceptionally well choreographed aerial battles, but director Shoji Kawamori correctly summed up Macross Plus as "a serious story with a silly plot." Unrated; suitable for ages 16 and up: Nudity, violence, sexual situations. --Charles Solomon

A sub-par DVD for the Movie Edition
I've heard good things about the movie edition for Macross Plus for a while. How it's better then the 4 part OVA. I've never gotten to see it until now, and IMO it isn't better. It feels a little choppy in the pacing department. The new music for the montages wasn't as good as the music they had in the OVA. I don't like that the battle scene with the VF-11B Thunderbolt and the board meeting talking about the YF-19 and YF-21 tests were cut but I like what they did with the rest. The ending is worth (at the very least renting) the Movie Edition of Macross Plus.

My biggest problem is with the picture. The video for the DVD releases for the OVA looks great. But for the movie it looks like a VHS tape. It's not like another company released the movie edition. I know it was put out for the Macross fans but it doesn't mean the video has to look as bad is it does, esp. when the OVA looked so good. I don't think it can be blamed on source material. What is up with the video quality? No one is going to be using this as a demo disc.

My next problem is with the Subtitles. From what I've read there never was an English dub recorded for the Movie Edition and of course to do it for the dvd would cost more money (and I have a feeling it wouldn't be that inspired anyway). I'm fine with it only being in Japanese. What I do hate is burnt in subtitles. Why oh why? It looks tacky and makes the video quality look a little worst. Again, they were going for the VHS look I guess. The audio does sound good though.

The extras are a laugh. The character bio's would have been better if a fan of the the series wrote them, the photo gallery isn't that great and the rest of the extras are just commericals for Manga. But I guess that's what is to be expected as they are pretty much the same (if not the same, but I don't feel like checking) extras for the OVA dvds. Still, Macross is pretty big and it would have been nice to see at least an interview with the director.

Overall I can't recommend this disc. There is no excuse for the bad video and the burnt in subtitles. They must have ported the movie from a VHS tape and re-mixed the sound. If you like Macross I'd recommend picking up the OVA. If you are a Macross region 1 dvd completist then you'll pick this up no matter what, just like me.

Macross Plus: Movie Edition
First of all, I would like to mention that I have not seen the Macross Plus OVAs, so I do not know the differences between the OVAs and the Movie Edition. What I am reviewing here is the movie edition, and the movie edition only. Macross Plus is probably my most fav Macross production to date. I've really enjoyed this movie. It is about two life-long rivals, Isamu and Guld, who're not only rival test pilots, but also are rivals for romance, as they both compete with each other for the affection of the beautiful Myung, who is the director of Sharon Apple, the world's first virtuid pop singer. The movie is mostly about the love triangle involved with Isamu, Guld, and Myung, but there is lots of sci-fi and mecha action involved, too. The animation and music are simply beautiful. All of Sharon Apple's songs are execellent, although my fav Macross song is defientely Information High. The only thing I didn't ilke about Macross Plus: Movie Edition was the bad quality of the DVD. While the picture quality is still defientely better than VHS, it is still not up to par with the DVDs of today, and it feels like Manga Entertainment just took their Master VHS copy and slapped it onto a DVD disc. The special features are pretty poor, too, in which you just get the OVA Ending Credits, the trailers for the OVAs, and those annoying poorly written character profiles. I'd highly recommend seeing Macross Plus, but you may want to check out the OVAs before the movie edition. The only reason I bought the Movie Edition was because it was cheaper than buying the OVAS, IMO, but if you've already seen the OVAs, stick with the OVAs, or if you haven't seen Macross Plus yet, either buy the OVAs, or try and find this DVD at a good, cheap, price.

spoiled by sloppy DVD production
Macross Plus movie edition was first released in Japan in theatrical double bill with the Macross 7 movie. Macross Plus itself is a prequal to Macross set between the original series and Macross 7. (incidentally Macross 2 is not part of the main continuity due to it's poor performance) Macross creator Shoji Kawamori directs once again with Co-Director Shinichiro Watanabe (assistant director for the OAV). Shinichiro Watanabe is probably best known for directing Cowboy Bebop a few years later.

I prefer the movie version to the OAV. There are quiet a few extra scenes and a lot of the story has been rearranged. There really isn't anything in the OAV that isn't in the movie and I felt the OAV dragged a little. Even though there is nothing dramatically new the tone is a little darker and the characters seem more rounded. The biggest changes are probably too Isamu. In this version he's a little more mature, in some ways he's seems like a prototype for Cowboy Bebop's Spike. In the OAV there was very little emphasis on Isamu and Lucy's relationship so watching it in episodes you could forget about it, in the movie it's more prominent and it seems more important. Overall the story is better and better presented and better served by the movie format.

Now for the kick in the teeth. The picture quality is awful (it is better than my VHS copy but not up to scratch for a DVD), the subtitles are hard and there is only one sound track (sound quality is pretty good though). I think all Manga has done is use their master for the VHS version. Why did they do this? Well just a guess but... Manga has the rights to both the OAV and movie in the UK. They released the lovely picture quality episodes on two discs and then strapped (literally) the movie DVD on in a nice package (if it's any consolation all the discs are mislabelled for example the movie has episodes 3 and 4 printed on the disc). The movie makes a fantastic extra but not so great at full price.

This is a great film, I really enjoyed it but I expect a lot more from a DVD release.

Stonebrook
Released in DVD by Mgm/Ua Studios (07 October, 2003)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Byron W. Thompson
Whenever a farm kid gets accepted to a fancy college, there is the potential for comedy (Loser) or for thriller-like tragedy (The Skulls). From the opening voice-over narration, Stonebrook opts to be the fish-out-of-water thriller. With the help of a friend of the family, 23-year-old Erik (Brad Rowe) gets a scholarship to the Ivy League-type school called Stonebrook. His dorm-mate is a nerdy hacker named Cornelius (Seth Green). When his scholarship is yanked, the two of them team up to pull increasingly ambitious scams to keep him in tuition money, eventually crossing paths with mob boss Mr. Tali (Stanley Kamel). While Rowe is perfectly fine playing off his Brad Pitt looks with his Brad Pitt style of indifferent acting, Green turns in a disappointing performance. The stronger actor of the two, Green has been consistently good in movies (Austin Powers) and on TV (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), but for some reason this time he decided to overplay his nerd characteristics as if he were a reject from Weird Science. Then there's the plot. With its scams within scams within scams, logic soon flies out the window and the question of who's scamming whom is quickly replaced with "Who cares?" In the end, Stonebrook wants to be a college version of The Usual Suspects but doesn't quite make the grade. --Andy Spletzer

seth green kicks!!
Seth Green is my favorite actor, period. This movie is ok, but the shootout at the finale feels dumb but its uplifted by its striking sorta "The Usual Suspects" ending, which I liked in this movie. Green sorta dissapeared for like god knows how many minutes making people think hes dead but then comes back, great performance by him, in a geeky way. a must see for Green fans

A Pleasanst Surprise
Some think this was a direct to video movie and it was not. I personally saw this movie at the theatre! I can say I was honestly surprised. It is very suspensful, with a number of unexpected twists. Brad Rowe is very believing in the character he plays. I personally saw a couple of the scenes in this movie being filmed in Chapel Hill, NC, and it is a professional flick, not amateur as stated by a couple of other reviews here. If you like suspense, thrillers, twists, catch this movie!

WOW!
You don't see many indy films like this anymore. What sets it apart? Great acting, great directing, and yes great writing. Shot for just under 750,000 dollars this gem stars Brad Rowe and Seth Green. As it is a mystery (of sorts) I wont explain the plot (plus you can read that in other reviews), however let me just raise my hand and say "wow."

Captured
Released in DVD by Avalanche Video (29 June, 1999)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Peter Liapis
Average review score:

Nick Mancuso at his best
I loved this picture. First, the twist of the story itself and a moral dilemma in it, second - brilliant performance by Nick Mancuso - his character , who used to be IN CONTROL AND LOVING IT, now being on the edge of insanity... Well, Nick Mancuso IS IN CONTROL of your attention till the very end. Add music, photography... An hour and a half very well spent!

Peter Liapis definitely did a good job with this movie.
This movie was so good, all I can say is, "wow." One of the best thrillers I have seen in a long time. Peter Liapis who starred in Ghoulies and Ghoulies IV wrote and directed this movie. It was creepy and suspenseful.

Andrew Divoff stars in this movie as a petty thief who gets caught trying to steal a car owned by Holden Down (Nick Mancuso) and ends up trapped in the car.

During the middle/end of the movie, Andrew (Robert Breed) gets out and then things get really interesting. From the beginning to the end the movie kept up with the plot, and it never got boring.

I think in the beginning though, it is kind of hard to understand until you see Andrew's character and his Brother going after Holden's car, then it starts from there when Holden catches his Brother and breaks his arm. The acting was really good, Andrew Divoff was the best actor in this movie. I enjoyed his performance as well as Nick Mancusos.

A Great Straight to video release
Just like to say simply, that this is one of the best straight to video titles I have ever seen.

It's one of those movies that is SO much better than it sounds, and therefore greatly under -rated!

I was on the edge of my seat all the time!!

Jack Be Nimble
Released in DVD by Image Entertainment (07 September, 1999)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Garth Maxwell
Average review score:

A complete disaster!
If you're like me, you probably wanted to check out this movie because it sounded like it really could be an excellent supernatural Gothic horror tale full of goblins and wicked things alike. Well, don't make the same mistake I did and actually watch it. It's horrible. Terrible. An honest to goodness waste of film. The acting is wretched, the film quality is rotten (it actually looks twenty years older than it is), and the plot is thin, weak, and does not give you what it's supposed to. The only reason I bothered to give this film 1 star is because of Alexis Arquette -- he's great looking, but should have left this film out of his career.

Jack Be Fumbled
Glum film tries too hard as adopted blood siblings reunite later in life. He has a hypnotizing machine, an attitude, and four angry sisters after him, she is psychic and pregnant. Brooding and dark, dull and silly.

Sheer brilliance
I tuned in to Jack Be Nimble when it was on TV today, & I was blown away by Alexis Arquette's acting ability. I've read some reviews saying it was a dissapointment because it wasn't a supernatural gothic horror film with ghosts & goblins, but Arquette's character was so real & memorable I truly felt what he felt throughout the film. I'm rarely touched by movies, which is why I wanted to write this review. I'm a tough critic, believe it or not, being someone who has studied dramatic arts for years, & although this psychological thriller had its weak assets, Arquette's performance was nothing short of sheer brillance.

A Brother's Kiss
Released in DVD by Fox Lorber (14 December, 1999)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Seth Zvi Rosenfeld
Average review score:

Bit typical story but still the best!
I believe the plot of A BROTHER"S KISS, sort of typical
Hong Kong gangster movies very 80's theme..like brotherhood, drugs and violence..with very tragic tales however the director
Seth Zvi brought heart warming moments with great actors' performance...worth to see it anytime!

A biting and seedy look at NY street and drug life ....
In this movie we follow two very different brothers raised by an alcoholic street walking mother ... One brother manages to overcome the adversity of his upbringing always striving for a long term goal, while the older brother takes a more hedonistic look at life and doesn't really plan further than tomorrows thrill .....

This certainly is one of the hands down best depictions of how drugs really ruin your life and your loves ... it certainly must be noted that this 1977 is NOWHERE close to the violent drug movies of today where we are treated to super close up shots of users inserting heroin needles ....

excellent acting and cast
the cast is great and so is the storyline.Cathy Moriarity does an excellent job,John Leguizamo is great,Marisa Tomei is masterful, and Rosie Perez is simply the best. The story of two brothers going seperate ways in life into a dramatic conclusion that is simply an original heatfelt film.

Seth - The Hard Way
Released in DVD by Brentwood Communications (21 November, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Seth Enslow
This frenetic documentary about motorcycle daredevil Seth Enslow chronicles his career as a madman on two wheels, focusing on his attempt to set the world's distance record for jumping a motorcycle more than 250 feet from one ramp to another. Enslow's reckless style is portrayed vividly with clips showing him doing things on a motorcycle that no sane person would even envision. He tries to ride up vertical mountainsides, he goes rocketing off cliffs, and in one segment that shows how he literally dropped onto the scene and established himself as an up and coming wild man, he sails through the air and lands on a desert hillside filled with parked motorcycles (whose owners madly scramble to avoid his unexpected landing). Enslow is interviewed on the radio by rapper Ice T, and he's followed on tour in various countries, doing motorcycle stunts and partying with his friends, who are, like he is, heavily tattooed dudes. The Hard Way showcases Enslow's obsession to set the world's distance jumping record, and even interviews the fellow who designed Enslow's ramp. Footage of the great jump includes Enslow's rough and bloody landing. As if that's not enough, the DVD contains an extra feature containing X-rays of Enslow's injuries. --Robert J. McNamara

Seth - The Hard Way
If I could give zero stars I would. I agree with the review by Ken L.

If you have kids DO NOT buy this video. Seth Enslow is reckless & irresponsible. Not the guy to be your kids hero.

McGrath, Carmichael, Pastrana etc., are guys you can look up to. Great riders, professional, responsible......

TRASH
THIS FILM HAS VERY LITTLE TO DO WITH MOTORCYCLING AND MORE TO DO ABOUT SETH AND HIS WANABEE GANGSTER FRIENDS. SETH BEHAVES LIKE A PUNK IN THIS VIDEO, KIDS LOOK UP TO HIM, AND HE HAS LET THEM DOWN, HE HAS SHOWN THAT HE IS NOT WORTH LOOKING UP TO. IN ONE SCENE HIM AND HIS "POSSE" ARE WALKING DOWN THE STREET HOLDING ASSAULT RIFLES, WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH MOTORCYCLING?? I ADVISE AGAINST BUYING HIS VIDEO, GIVE YOUR MONEY TO TRAVIS OR MCGRATH

Seth Rules
Seth rocks, this video is awesome, the best, and those who think that not showing it to their kids is a good thing, I mean please who are they kidding, would they rather them be watching Seth on a bike or big arnie shooting someone up or some homeboy selling drugs in half of the hollywood flicks today, I hate to shock them but kids have seen it all, a motocross video will do nothing to them, this one will however amaze them
