Great film
Great great film. Direction, performances, writing, casting all first rate and better than any other modern boxing movie. Don't miss this film, it is great entertainment for everyone- family, adults, and kids. You will not go wrong with this movie.
Should have won for Best Picture of the Year.

great boxing film!!!!
The best boxing film out today by far, outshines the Rocky films, due to if you have seen the first rocky, you have seen them all. 'Gladiator' is a refreshing story line and has some great performances.
GREAT!

Outstanding Movie
This wasn't just a boxing movie, it was a full scale drama that certainly puts Rocky to shame. Actor James Marshall did a super job in the lead role of Tommy Reilly; and the rest of the cast was likewise excellent, Jon Seda in particular.

Zebrahead
Released in DVD by Columbia Tristar Hom (18 June, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Anthony Drazan
Starring: Michael Rapaport and DeShonn Castle
A hard-hitting and impressive low-budget independent film about love and racism, Zebrahead is a volatile mix of social commentary and powerful acting. Michael Rapaport (Mighty Aphrodite, Beautiful Girls) is a white urban high school student enamored of black rap culture who pursues and falls in love with the cousin (N'Bushe Wright) of his black best friend. Their intense romance brings out racial tensions in their school, among their friends and at home. Problems escalate as a notorious gang banger goes after the girl, forcing a schoolwide confrontation with violent results. With the flavor of a modern urban Romeo and Juliet love story and a showcase for the debut of two exceptional young actors, Zebrahead is a provocative sleeper film well worth checking out. --Robert Lane

SHADES OF WEST SIDE STORY AND ROMEO AND JULIET...
This is an intriguing independent film, deftly directed by Anthony Drazan, which explores the concepts of interracial romance and reactive racism. Done in the best tradition of independent films, it features some powerhouse performances and a provocative storyline.

The film takes place in Detroit, Michigan, a predominantly black city. Zack (Michael Rappaport) is a white, middle class, jewish, urban teenager whose mother died when he was young. He lives with his father, Richard (Ray Starkey), an erstwhile swinger and owner of an inner city music store. Zack attends the predominantly black, local public high school, and his best friend, Dee (DeShonn Castle), is also black and middle class. Zack is very taken with black culture.

When Dee's cousin, Nikki (N'Bushe Wright), who is black and from East New York, Brooklyn, moves into town, Zack, who has just been dumped by his white girlfriend, finds himself smitten by her. They gradually begin a romance that attracts a lot of unwanted attention. When the high school hot head and bad boy, Nut (Ron Johnson), a black gang banger wanna be, develops the hots for Nikki, it is the beginning of the end with the inevitable violent result.

This is a surprisingly good film with superlative performances by Michael Rappaport, DeShonn Castle, Ron Johnson, N'Bushe Wright, and the late Ray Starkey. The tension throughout the movie is kept taut and believable. Though somewhat predictable, the film manages to keep the viewer engaged throughout. This is a well made film that deserves a viewing.

Excellent!
A beautiful, realistic Romeo and Juliet drama. The acting was wonderful, the writing brilliant. My only compliant is that more people haven't seen this movie, or heard of it. Definitly something I recommend to lovers of urban dramas.

honest and realistic
I love this movie. Really, really love it. I went to a school like this with kids like these.I was in the cafeteria and some other places durring the days racially-charged situations almost went to critical mass, and I was part of a group discussion the following week, in which nothing was resolved.

Which is what I like most about this movie. It doesn't end with everyone singing. Or dancing, or marching towards the camera, or anything like that. The goomba and the Spike Lee guy duke it out while the Asian girl despairs, and the white guy and black girl embrace each other hopelessly. That is life. Some differences will never be resolved, and the best you can hope for is that *some* people will reach each other. I was praying all along that this would not have some pat ending that could never have happened at my school, and I was rewarded. There are no resolutions, just moments.

Selena
Released in DVD by Warner Studios (03 June, 2003)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Gregory Nava
Starring: Jennifer Lopez, Jon Seda, and Edward James Olmos
Gregory Nava (Why Do Fools Fall In Love?) directs this more-or-less official film biography of the late Mexican-American singer, Selena Quintanilla Perez (the film is coproduced by her father), which emphasizes sentimentality over conflict and plays down the star's horrific death at the hands of a deranged fan. Jennifer Lopez is quite good as Selena, whose roots we come to know through the story of her father (Edward James Olmos), a Corpus Christi singer who was rejected by white audiences. The script focuses primarily on Selena's inspiring rise, and it tries to muster some sense of urgent conflict over not-particularly-contentious issues (such as her relationship with a guitarist). But Olmos does a fine job portraying the elder Perez as a possessive sort, and the music and general buoyancy of Lopez's performance are infectious. The unavoidable subject of Selena's killer--a woman who happened to be the president of her fan club--is considerably and oddly downplayed. --Tom Keogh

A very good movie but also very sad!
This is a very good movie but also a very sad movie. This movie is about the singer Selena, who was a popular singer when she was doing concerts and such back then in the early 90's, but then in 1995, Yolanda Saldevar shot Selena, in Yolanda's hotel room, and Selena died that day. This movie tells everything about Selena's life and when she was a child! And I must say that Jennifer Lopez does a really AWESOME job of acting as Selena in this movie!! So, if you're a Selena fan then you must buy this movie!!! It's a must-see!

Wonderful Movie
Every time I watch this movie, I cry at the end. It is such a touching story about a beautiful, amazing young woman whose life ended early. Rarely does a movie like this focus on the person's childhood for more than a few minutes. I appreciated that every event built off of the last, from childhood to adulthood. That helped me understand more about Selena and her life. Jennifer Lopez did an amazing job acting for this movie. It's just harder now to see her in this role since she has been in many movies and performs often for her music. Jennifer is her own performer and it's harder to see her as Selena anymore. Anyway, this is definitely a great movie with an awesome cast and a touching story. Not to mention we get the chance to hear Selena's beautiful voice and the music she sang with such passion.

I WAS AN EXTRA FOR THIS MOVIE
i had the privilege of being an extra in several parts of the movie and actually meeting/having a conversation with jennifer lopez herself. i thought she did a great job and i still cry every time i see the selena movie. it has the strength to make me cry still.....

Boys on the Side
Released in DVD by Warner Studios (06 November, 2001)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Herbert Ross
Starring: Whoopi Goldberg, Mary-Louise Parker, and Drew Barrymore
This female-bonding film takes your basic soap opera and twists it inside out. Although director Herbert Ross draws superb performances from his actresses, he occasionally wallows in that maudlin, Hollywood melodrama in which close-ups are crucial. Remember, this is the man who directed Steel Magnolias. However, Ross also does something you don't expect: he makes you fall in love with his characters. Whoopi Goldberg is a down-on-her luck singer who hopes to start over in Los Angeles. Mary-Louise Parker is the realtor whose life is going nowhere. After Goldberg answers Parker's ad in the paper for a companion to drive to LA, these two completely different women grudgingly find themselves emotionally involved. Drew Barrymore enters the picture on the first leg of the trip when Goldberg insists on visiting her. After battling with her drug-dealing boyfriend, the flighty, sexy Barrymore throws in with them. During their trek west, the women learn to take life as it lands on them while recognizing true friendship. The film is enlightened in that it accepts the complications and blurred family ties of the '90s. At the heart of the story is the realization that people can expand past expected boundaries. The movie gels in other areas as well. The all-female soundtrack is powerful and works to underscore, not overpower, certain scenes. The same can be said of the supporting cast, specifically Anita Gillette and James Remar. --Rochelle O'Gorman
Average review score:

"I do the best I can, honey."
Herbert Ross' "Boys on the Side" is a road trip film with a different perspective. In the cinematic world, the road trip film typically revolves around a gang of friends who hit the road hoping to find their true calling along the way. There are highs and lows during this voyage of discovery, but ultimately matters end on a generally positive note. Not so with this film. "Boys on the Side" is a road trip film with such a depressing low at its conclusion that any joy found along the way is seriously muted.

Jane Deluca (Whoopi Goldberg) decides to head west after she loses her job in New York. She hooks up with Robin (Mary-Louise Parker) who is heading the same way and wants to share the driving with someone else. The pair picks up a third traveler in Pittsburgh when Jane's friend Holly Pulchik (Drew Barrymore) joins the westward trek in order to escape her abusive boyfriend Nick (Billy Wirth). Along the way there are a series of revelations with one in particular leading to a painful loss.

"Boys on the Side" is a film with the dramatic twists and turns of a soap opera. However, it fares much better in comparison because of the higher quality of acting and the more mature approach to the material. The whimsical interaction between the three women is a joy to watch as Goldberg, Parker, and Barrymore light up the screen from start to finish. Parker's performance is especially powerful and will most likely be the one aspect of the film that will continue to linger in your thoughts after it concludes. "Boys on the Side" is about the strong bond of friendship and how this strong bond helps friends to deal with the sad realization that life is difficult and unfair. It is not the easiest film to sit through but it is a rewarding experience for those that manage to do so.

Heart and Soul
This review refers to the WB/Regency DVD edition of "Boys on the Side".....

"Sometimes...if you don't have anyplace to go, it's probably best to stay where you are" is one of Whoopi Goldberg's bits of wisdom in this film. So that's what they did....

Two strangers, women who couldn't be more different then night and day begin on a journey that will take them places far better than their intended destination. A journey of life, discovery and a friendship that knows no bounds is what unfolds in this wonderful story.

The journey begins in New York. Jane(Whoopi Goldberg) and Robin(Mary-Louise Parker),both for their own reasons want to start a new life. Looking to share a ride to California, they meet and agree to make the trip together, even though from the outset it's obvious these two woman have nothing in common. When they hit Pittsburg, Jane stops in on good friend Holly(Drew Barrymore). There's trouble amiss in Holly's life though, her drug-dealing boyfriend is abusing her.The girl's take matters into thier own hands and free Holly(leaving the boyfriend tied up and injured), grab her and take her along with them.On the road with them we come to realize each has a secret of their own. As their stories unfold, these three very different woman become close and are there to help each other at any costs. The become their own little family. Men, as Robin's mother puts it,"are merely side dishes, you girls stick your fork in, when you want a taste."

It's not just a story for women though. It's a story of bonding. Sharing one's own strengths with the people you are close to. It's an emotional roller coaster, you'll need the kleenex for this one!(But there's lots of laughs as well). If you like "Terms of Endearment", you'll love this one. It's a story from the heart that will touch your soul.

The casting of the three stars is a stroke of genius. Goldberg, Parker, and Barrymore have a connection to each other that is a joy to watch. They put THEIR hearts and souls into this film. The supporting cast includes Anita Gillete, Estelle Parsons and Matthew McConaughey(who is just so,... well Matthew McConaughey).
The music is as much a part of the story as the characters and is excellent with songs by Bonnie Raitt, Melissa Etheridge,Pretenders,Sheryl Crow, and Whoopie herself does some singing.Oh and don't forget to see whose band is playing in "The Cantina".

The DVD is as beautiful as the movie. A sharp clear picture( a little dark in some places but nothing to distract from the enjoyment of the film),nice colors, and great sound(Dolby stereo surround)is what you'll find. You have the choice of widescreen or a standard format. There are no special features(might have been nice to have a music video with all this great music), but there are subtitiles in English and French and may be viewed in those languages as well.

So get the popcorn, Kleenex, and maybe a side of Brad Pitt ready for this one.....enjoy..Laurie

Gritty, Funny, Heart-Wrenching, Inspiring
A mix of complex characters, believable in their actions and reactions, builds a powerful experience of the lives of three unique women. I espicially like the tension of unspoken love between the lesbian character (Whoopie Goldberg) and the frail young woman trying to find some joy in a hard life. The cameo by the Indigo Girls is a special bonus!
Get together some close girlfriends and some kleenex and enjoy!

12 Monkeys - DTS
Released in DVD by Universal Studios (02 September, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Terry Gilliam
Starring: Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, and Brad Pitt
Inspired by Chris Marker's acclaimed short film La Jetée (which is included on the DVD Short 2: Dreams), 12 Monkeys combines intricate, intelligent storytelling with the uniquely imaginative vision of director Terry Gilliam. The story opens in the wintry wasteland of the year 2035, where a virulent plague has forced humans to live in a squalid, oppressively regimented underground. Bruce Willis plays a societal outcast who is given the opportunity to erase his criminal record by "volunteering" to time-travel into the past to obtain a pure sample of the deadly virus that will help future scientists to develop a cure. But in bouncing from 1918 to the early and mid-1990s, he undergoes an ordeal that forces him to question his own perceptions of reality. Caught between the dangers of the past and the devastation of the future, he encounters a psychiatrist (Madeleine Stowe) who is initially convinced he's insane, and a wacky mental patient (Brad Pitt in a twitchy Oscar-nominated role) with links to a radical group that may have unleashed the deadly virus. Equal parts mystery, tragedy, psychological thriller, and apocalyptic drama, 12 Monkeys ranks as one of the best science fiction films of the '90s, boosted by Gilliam's visual ingenuity and one of the finest performances of Willis's career. --Jeff Shannon

I didn't like it.
I never liked this movie. I thought the characters and acting was stupid. The blood in the end looked so fake.

Confusing, many times over.
I'm still not sure what to think of this movie. I have seen it quite a few times and yet it still doesn't make sense to me.
When mental patient James Cole (Bruce Willis) is sent back in time to find information on a lethal virus has wiped out five billion people in 1996. Mistakenly, he arrives in 1990. After explaining his plea to Dr. Kathryn Railly, (Madeleine Stowe) he is placed in a mental institution. In 1996, he kidnaps Railly, using her to find the 12 Monkeys, a group of revolutionists that are planning to release the virus into select cities. But he is wanted by the authorities for murder and kidnapping, plus he refuses to return to the future.

Good movie, I have to watch it a little more to . . .
This is a good movie. I didn't give it a five because it seems as if something was lacking. I don't know what it was, but that is probably why I'm not a director.

I think the whole movie is summed up where Cole (Bruce Willis) has trouble deciding what is real about half way through the movie. And, also, the theme that goes along with that is who is crazy and who decides that they are crazy that I think is echoed in the beginning mental institution scenes. I can't say much more. Yeah, too much, and I'll give away the movie; which I hope I haven't already.

Brad Pitt, Madeline Stowe, and Bruce all do a good job. It's funny, and frightening (a little), and deep. I'm still trying to figure out a few things. I've watched it about 8 times.
Brad Pitt is pretty funny throughout the scenes that seem to be important for the movie. Maybe the writers did it on purpose- to lighten it maybe, but nonetheless they are pretty powerful and moving scenes.

And that's about it.

Primal Fear
Released in DVD by Paramount Studio (12 March, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Gregory Hoblit
Starring: Richard Gere, Laura Linney, and Edward Norton
Clever twists and a bona fide surprise ending make this an above-average courtroom thriller, tapping into the post-O.J. scrutiny of our legal system in the case of a hotshot Chicago defense attorney (Richard Gere) whose latest client is an altar boy (Edward Norton) accused of murdering a Catholic archbishop. The film uses its own manipulation to tell a story about manipulation, and when we finally discover who's been pulling the strings, the payoff is both convincing and pertinent to the ongoing debate over what constitutes truth in the American system of justice. Making an impressive screen debut that has since led to a stellar career, Norton gives a performance that rides on a razor's edge of schizophrenic pathology--his role is an actor's showcase, and without crossing over the line of credibility, Norton milks it for all it's worth. Gere is equally effective in a role that capitalizes on his shifty screen persona, and Laura Linney and Frances McDormand give memorable performances in their intelligently written supporting roles. --Jeff Shannon
Average review score:

THIS MOVIE SHOWS THE WIDE RANGE OF THE GREAT EDWARD NORTON.
"Primal Fear" is an entertaining thriller with some plot twists, good performances and interesting story. But the best part of the movie is the Edward Norton performance, he steals the show from good actors every time he appears on the screen.

The movie introduces a cynical, narcissist and ambitious famous lawyer Martin Vail, he is played by Richard Gere, and of course he has no problem with the role because Richard Gere is cynical, narcissist, ambitious and famous. Anyway, when Martin Vail watches on TV the arrest of a boy accused of the homicide of a Chicago archbishop, he immediately sees the opportunity of raise his profile by defending the boy.

Then he meets Aaron Stampler (Edward Norton), a quiet and harmless boy; then the lawyer realizes that Aaron is innocent. After that, the movie becomes an entertaining thriller / mystery / courtroom drama, with some plot twists, interesting characters and revelations.

But the most interesting part is to see all the changes and emotions that Edward Norton prints in his character; he is just an amazing actor, his performance is by far the best in the movie. After this film, Norton delivered his best performance in American History X, and established himself as the best actor of his generation.

I don't think he did it!!! It was Roy!
Ok, first off, I watched this movie when it came to theatres in 96, and I thought the ending was so messed up, but I was only 14. Young Ed Norton (one of my favorite actors) was outstanding. Going from stuttering innocent little alter boy Arron Stampler, to diabolical, foul mouthed, ruthless Roy. The movie had suspense, some humor, originality, and a surprise ending, which entertains you from beginning to end. And in real life this could happen. That is why it's hard to prove insanity because they get off so easily in the court of law. Richard Gere deserved an award for this film too. Playing the part of a naive and optimistic attorney. I felt like the end defeated the whole purpose of the beginning and middle, but hell i didnt expect it. It was a well thought out unexpected twist. It's a great movie, and it's been on tnt like every night. If you wanna see the actual movie with all the adulterated scenes left in, rent it.

Two words -- ED NORTON
Since I have never really been a big fan of Richard Gere, I ignored this movie when it was in the theaters back in '96. One night at the video store, I wanted a mystery/drama and thought "what the heck, it cannot be that bad." 2 hours later, after watching it once, I wanted to watch it again.

Ed Norton delivers an amazing and very disturbing performance. Although this was his first major movie, he created a character that one moment you feel for and the next ... well I will let you learn that from the movie. Richard Gere is also very good in this movie. He sheds light on the good and bad side of defending the accused. The movie takes you step by step through his investigation and you understand why his character believes in Norton's character so much. As a law student, the court room aspect of the movie is a little weak, overall it is the best legal thriller avaliable.

Out of Africa
Released in DVD by Universal Studios (04 March, 2003)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Sydney Pollack
Starring: Meryl Streep and Robert Redford
Sydney Pollack's 1985 multiple-Oscar winner is a sumptuous and emotionally satisfying film about the life of Danish writer Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep), better known as Isak Dinesen, who travels to Kenya to be with her German husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer) but falls for an English adventurer (Robert Redford). The film is slow in developing the relationship, but it is rich in beautiful images of Africa and in the romantic tone surrounding Blixen's gradual discovery of her life and voice. One downside: while we may all love Redford, he is as convincingly British as Kevin Costner is in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. --Tom Keogh
Average review score:

An Epic with blemishes
This is indeed a beautiful movie. I saw it for the first time last night and its comparable to 'The English Patient' in more ways than one. Undeniably, it is Meryl Streep who holds the film together, as the supporting cast does her no favors. The direction is superb and the background score is very captivating. Universals' DVD presentation of the film is commendable, complete with an hour long documentary called 'The Song of Africa' which documents the crews' travails in the dark continent and also gives one some insights on how the film made it from page to screen.

However, Robert Redford ruins most of the film with his dull uninspired take as a British expatriate living and trekking in South Africa. I have never particularly liked any of this mans' performances, and his role here only serves to reiterate that he is one of the most overrated American actors of all time. I can even imagine Tim Curry or Danny DeVito doing a better job here than he does. His character is supposed to be British. Why on earth does he then sound as if he just stepped off a trailer in Mobile, Alabama? Did Mr. Redford do no research on this part? This is truly unpardonable and one of the reasons why I have to ultimately give this film only three stars. And they all belong to Meryl.

Mildly recommended.

A Good Intro
If you know little about Isak Dinesen's story, this movie will enthrall you, and give you a good introduction to it. The actors, especially Meryl Streep, do a great job, and the vistas in the background are everything you'd expect in an ode to Africa: plains with buffalo, elephants, giraffe, and the mountains in the background.
However, if you've read anything about this, the movie may be a bit jarring. Specifically, Robert Redford is jarring. I'm sure he's a great actor, but he's just not playing the part of Denys Finch-Hatton. He portrays a Great White Hunter of the British Empire as a Great White Conservationist with a strong American accent. Words are put in Finch-Hatton's mouth that make little sense. Don't give up on the movie however, just concentrate on Streep.

one of my favorites ever
This movie combines so many different emotions, and sets up a dreamworld and story for you to fall in love with. But if you're thinking of buying it, you've probably already seen it. The only reason to buy this DVD is if you want to see it over and over again, and if you want see the added features...which are interesting once. As far as the movie goes, I can do nothing but give it 5 stars.

Bad Boys II
Released in DVD by Columbia Tristar Hom (09 December, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Michael Bay
Starring: Martin Lawrence, Will Smith, and Gabrielle Union
No one goes to a movie directed by Michael Bay for delicacy and grace; you go because Michael Bay (Armageddon, The Rock) knows how to make your bones rattle during a high-speed chase when a car flips over, spins through the air, and smacks another car with a visceral crunch. Bad Boys II fulfills this expectation and then some. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence may be mere puppets amid all this burning rubber and shrieking metal, but they actually provide a human core to the endless cascade of car wrecks and gunfights. Their easy rapport makes their personal problems--a running joke is Lawrence's attempts at anger management--as engaging as the sheer visual hullabaloo of bullets and explosions. The plot is recycled nonsense about drug lords and dead bodies being used to smuggle drugs, but orchestration of violence is symphonic. If that's your thing, then this is for you. --Bret Fetzer
Average review score:

The best gun fight and car chasing movie of the year!
It's quite a long action movie with a very standard story, two hot tempered guys chasing after a cuban ectasy dealer.....That doesnt matter. The gun fights, the car chasing scenes are so fantastic with much improved cinematography than the first episode, certainly attributed to a much higher budget and the pressure on the whole original team including the producer and the director with their current superstar status that could not allow them to disappoint. I am bold enough to say that the amount of "good stuff" can actually be spilt into two more average action films. More importantly, some scenes are quite "new" or "creative", such as dumping cars from a big truck along the highway .....

In short, a must rent and watch! If you got a good 5.1 AV system, it's a must buy.

A Great Action Movie That I Am Very Pleased In Watching!!!
... Well I finally got to see Bad Boys 2 a few weeks ago and I was very pleased. I can't wait for the dvd to come out.

The movie is ACTION packed to say the least. There is action, brief nudity, a lot of cursing, violent and digusting killings, and a lot of drugs. It is not a kid's movie and I was disapointed to see how many people brought their kids with them to see this movie.

Anyway, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence make a great team and yes their jokes were sometimes annoying and dry but not enough to be overshadowed by the really funny scenes. I liked the first Bad Boys film but I really feel that the sequel is much better. I would not be surprised to see a third installment.

If you like action, good special effects and great stunt coordination, this film is for you. I can't wait to watch it again!

Bad Boys 2
I really enjoyed this movie. It was the best 2 1/2 hours of my summer. If it ever comes back in theaters, I will see it again. Regardless where it is playing at.
