Outlaw Star (Collection 3)
Released in DVD by Pioneer Video (06 March, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Directors: Wendee Lee and Hongo Mitsuru
This rollicking comedy-adventure concludes as the characters finally reach the mysterious world known as the Galactic Leyline. After searching for clues about it in the cyclopean ruins of "Grave of the Dragons," Gene Starwind poses as a prisoner to free the man who knows its coordinates. The expedition to the enigmatic planet turns into a four-way race that pits Gene and his crew against Hazanko and the Kei Pirates, the MacDougal Brothers and Professor Gwen Kahn, and a Ctarl-Ctarl battle cruiser. At the Leyline, Gene, Melfina, and Suzuka confront the pasts that shaped their identities. Suzuka duels with the Pirate who murdered her family--and copied her face (a new twist on identity theft). Gene remembers his life as an orphan after his father sacrificed his life to save his son during a pirate attack. Melfina, who wants to know her true origins, receives a surprising answer. Katsuhiko Chiba's screenplay sometimes staggers, like Gene the morning after a heavy night. Episode 23 is a long digression set in a hot spring with lots of slapstick comedy and jiggle shots, but very little story development. However, the filmmakers do a noteworthy job of preserving the tone of the series and the personalities of the characters while raising the stakes. Gene demonstrates his untapped potential when he engineers an interplanetary jailbreak and battles the maniacal Hazanko, but he remains a devil-may-care rogue: he doesn't turn into a smarmy Good Guy. All the major characters survive the climactic fights, including the evil MacDougal Brothers, which leaves open the possibility of sequels. Gene, Melfina, and Jim Hawking may have returned to the backwater planet Sentinel III--and to a staggering debt to equipment dealer Fred Lou--but they're not likely to stay there. Rated 13 and up: nudity, profanity, sexual humor, and violence. --Charles Solomon

A comparison of anime finales
Of all the anime series I have collected and seen (Cowboy Bebop, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, Gundam Wing, etc), this series has the most lighthearted and fun endings of them all. All you anime collectors out there know what im taking about when I say the most great anime endings are sad and dissapointing. The characters die, or are separated. Being tired of all the grief caused by such anime endings, I am glad to find one that leaves the viewer satisfied. I recommend the entire series to every body because of its light heartedness, its superb graphics and fast action. Enjoy!!!

The Best?
Well, of course it is...I am 15 and a collector of anime. I have Lots of anime but this is my favorite anime of all time. I think the story is cool and the technology Evan cooler. The caster (a gun that shoots magic shells) is my favorite weapon. It has 9 episodes on 2 dvds and all the episodes are grate but the last 2 are my favorite...the Hot springs planet tenrai episode (I think that's how its spelled) got into the history of the caster and was funny to boot...if you like action adventure and a guy with a cool gun get this!

Outstanding
Not often does an anime series come around that not only has beutiful artwrok, wonderfully built characters AND one awesome story. Outlaw star follows in the footsteps of Cowboy BeBop and Gundam Wing. The 3rd collection is by far the best of all. It has it's share of very serious and comedic episodes. The final episode may come as some of a shoker leaving you with many questions (not as shocking as cowboy bebop's ending) and it left me depressed for several days. I highly recomend that any anime fan checks this show out.

Fishing With John - Criterion Collection
Released in DVD by Criterion Collection (27 April, 1999)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: John Lurie
Starring: John Lurie and Willem Dafoe
Originally produced for the Independent Film Channel, John Lurie's idiosyncratic take on the classical fishing program places the genre in entirely alien terrain--and that doesn't just refer to the strange and exotic locations. Best known to filmgoers for roles in Stranger Than Paradise and The Last Temptation of Christ, Lurie is also a composer, a saxophonist, the leader of the jazz group the Lounge Lizards, and a painter. Fisherman, however, is nowhere to be seen on his résumé, so this city-bred hipster's foray into rod and reel country is obviously another kettle of fish. Reeling in buddies Tom Waits, Matt Dillon, Willem Dafoe, Dennis Hopper, and director Jim Jarmusch to join him on his fishing trips to such faraway locales as Jamaica, Costa Rica, and Thailand, Lurie takes his show completely out of the "how to" realm: imagine a talk show defined by its contemplative silences. Fishing with John teaches nothing about fishing. Instead, John simply enjoys the company of his buddies as they venture out into unfamiliar territory and drop a line in the water, tossing in a current of absurdist commentary (dryly intoned by Roy Webb) and surreal speculation for good measure. This is the ultimate fishing show for people who could not care less about fishing. --Sean Axmaker

Offbeat and Weird! The Best!
If you have a DVD collection and some interesting friends, you should have this original. No run of the mill Hollywood production crap here. I loved this movie and couldn't stop singing (and laughing as I sang) the theme song.

How much fun is that?
I've never giggled so much in my life. What a weird series. It's like hanging out fishing with your friends, only your friends are not Bob and Jane, but John Lurie, Dennis Hopper, Tom Waits, and what Tom Waits has in his pants. What? Just watch it. Everyone needs a little weirdness in their lives.

John Lurie at his best
From the improvised scenes to the incredible shots of foreign lands, this is the most entertaining DVD I have watched in a long time. John Lurie teams up with such strange bedfellows as Dennis Hopper to catch the "elusive giant squid" in Thailand and Willem Defoe in Maine with whom he went ice fishing. John is able to coax the most sincere moods from his guests while forcing them to act out his often child-like adventures.

The DVD includes the commentary with John Lurie which fills out the experience with the tales of how he came up with such interesting shots, the locals that helped (and sometimes didn't) and most of all the not-so-behind the scenes look at what his guests are really like. It was also surprising to see how well John is at editing the film to make a specific impression of time or mood.
Everyone should watch! Always will be a DVD I come back to on a rainy day.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Collection 0-3
Released in DVD by A.D. Vision (23 January, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Hideaki Anno
Brash new Eva pilot Asuka seems to take a sadistic pleasure in deriding shy, melancholy Shinji. When the two of them are required to fight as a unit to destroy an invading Angel, she moves in with Shinji and Misato, complaining all the way. After practicing to music, they win the battle with a mecha version of a rhythmic gymnastics routine. Asuka volunteers to take her Eva into an active volcano to capture an Angel in its chrysalis stage; she's nearly killed when it escapes and has to be rescued by Shinji. After the volcano adventure, the pilots and Misato take a well-earned rest at a hot springs, where Shinji discovers the principal of thermal expansion can have embarrassing personal applications. Asuka also insults Rei, but all three pilots have to work together to defeat a huge, spidery Angel that secretes a corrosive acid in episode 11, "In the Still Darkness." A mysterious power failure that occurs during the Angel attack points to the actions of Shinji's father, Commander Ikari, who ruthlessly pursues his private agenda. All three episodes display the strong storytelling that has made Evangelion one of the most popular anime series. Not rated; suitable for ages 14 and up for robot versus robot violence, brief nudity, and minor profanity. --Charles Solomon

A warning against the English dub.
First of all, I have to give this DVD two thumbs up, as it brought me back into the anime circle of things. It's an excellent set featuring three (yes, just three -- sad, I know) excellent episodes of an excellent series. You won't regret buying this item.

However, I STRONGLY recommend you view it in Japanese with English subtitles. The voice acting is EXCELLENT (yes, that's my adjective of the day ^_~), and the dub pales considerably in contrast. If you understand Spanish, I encourage you to view the episodes in it -- AFTER you watch them in Japanese. In particular, I'm complaining because of the changes in the characters' voice tones. That alone can kill the essence of the story. It's not that the voice actors did a bad job -- on the contrary, I rather like the dub cast. It's just that sometimes the lines are read... wrong, to put it simply.

And if that doesn't help at all, this will: Asuka's "Back roll entry!" and "Hello! Guten mortgen!" sound MUCH cuter in Japanese. ^_~

"Your innocent eyes as yet have no idea"
On this third collection of Evangelion (episodes 9 through 11), Asuka commands most of the attention. Which is no surprise, considering that the young woman from Germany is still looking to prove she is the best of the three pilots. Her interplay with Shinji and Rei shows that her overweening pride is simply a mask to hide deeper insecurities, yet her fierce bravery is undeniable in these episodes.

The first of the three tales finds Asuka and Shinji pitted against an Angel (Israphel) who can magically duplicate itself when it is under attack. After a failed first effort, the two EVA pilots must learn to coordinate their efforts perfectly. Considering how little they like each other this may be harder than destroying the Angel. It certainly is funnier.

Next, NERV scientists discover an Angel embryo (Sandalphon) deep in the lava of an active volcano. Asuka, deprived of a chance to go on a class trip, is determined to destroy it on her own... If she can just get over the embarrassment of her special heat-resistant suit. Misato's determination puts Asuka in severe danger and the outcome is in doubt to the very end.

The final episode finds NERV headquarters in darkness due to human sabotage. Without power, Shinji, Asuka, and Rei must break into NERV to get to the EVAs before they can face an acid wielding Angel (Matriel) determined to liquefy Tokyo-3.

These episodes show the EVA pilots at their best and their worst. We do get a tiny glimpse of whatever it is that motivates Asuka's abrasive bravado, and how this balances and contrasts with Rei's calm acceptance and willingness to do whatever is needed. Poor Shinji, cursed with a brilliant but cold and distant father finds himself attracted and bewildered by both. Writer/director Hidako Anno again uses short glimpses, rather than long exposition to build interest. This enables him to accomplish a great deal of layering of story, development and symbol in the sparse context of the Anime medium.

Excelentes Episodios

Revolutionary Girl Utena - The Rose Collection Vol. 2
Released in DVD by Cpm/Software Sculptors (21 March, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Revolutionary Girl Utena
The mysteries of Ohtori Academy unravel a bit more in this second collection of episodes. Our noble heroine, Utena, is drawn into a series of bloodless fencing duels, the winner receiving the loyalty of Anthy, the mysterious Rose Bride. Being the first winning female Duelist, Utena has some peculiarities to resolve, sometimes quite comically. Nevertheless, she wants to free Anthy of her obligation and allow her to be a regular student, much to the chagrin of the shadowy student council who dub themselves "End of the World." Director Kunihiko Ikuhara (the inferior Sailor Moon) adopts a variety of tones in this series. "Curried High Trip" is played for laughs while the next episode, "Castle Where Eternity Dwells," deals ominously with Utena's past when her parents died (offscreen) and she is brought hope by way of a prince's gift--a ring, the symbol of a Duelist at Ohtori. Several duels take place in these episodes as we see the sides more cleanly defined: Utena will have to face down the student council at some point. The final episode recaps the first 12 episodes and tantalizes us with a key development for future episodes (there's 39 in all). Some mild domestic violence and oddly subtitled songs ("Absolute Destroy Apocalyptic," "Paleozoic Era in the Flies") will ruffle some parents, but girls ages 9 and up accustomed to anime will find this engaging entertainment. --Doug Thomas

Great Series
I bought the Utena DVDs on a whim, after hearing good reviews on the many anime sites that I frequent, and I was not disappointed. This is a cute anime that also makes you think. Its become one of my favorites! I recommend this series to any anime lover! However, there are some SLIGHT lesbian undertones, although not as many as in the movie, so homophobs should beware.

revolutionary anime
utena rocks! i rented the rose collection 1 on netflicks and was hooked by the first episode. what's nice about the rose collection 1 or 2 is that it has 7 episodes on it, so you can really get into the characters and the story. the character designs are great and the story is very mysterious. this is a very character driven show. i have seen a lot of anime and this is one of the best. other anime i love: evangelion, mobile suit gundam, gunbuster, macross.

An essential adult anime series
Don't be fooled by that "shoujo" or all the pretty flowers; Utena, followed all the way through, is a very disturbing series full of captivating imagery and memorable characters. Beware this show if you can't handle: incest, stabbings, betrayal, malice, abstract theatre, and some of the strangest scenes ever to come off a DVD.

Summertime - Criterion Collection
Released in DVD by Criterion Collection (25 August, 1998)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: David Lean
Starring: Katharine Hepburn and Rossano Brazzi
There was a time before Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago when David Lean made smaller, more effortlessly picturesque movies, and this splendid Venetian travelogue and love story is one of them--the last, actually, before the epic onslaught started with the Oscar-winning The Bridge on the River Kwai in 1957. "Sometimes I think a schedule in Venice is just, well, all wrong," observes a bewitched tourist to Katharine Hepburn's vacationing spinster near the beginning of Summertime, which is based on Arthur Laurents's play The Time of the Cuckoo. Before the end, however, Jane will have thrown her idealized romantic notions into the canals and embarked on a passionate affair with a married art dealer (Rossano Brazzi). More blissful than Lean's adulterous fable Brief Encounter 10 years prior, but not entirely guilt- or pain-free, this deceptively simple romance is an often-fascinating glimpse at a time when sexual revolution for Americans--and especially middle-aged women--was confined to fanciful European trysts. Plus, with all the architecture, art, Italian conversation, music, and fine cuisine around you (all richly photographed on location by Jack Hildyard), who's to pish-posh a furtive all-nighter between one repressive country and a free-loving one? The two leads are graceful and even musical in their movements and line deliveries. Hepburn's initial outrage at the idea that illicit love is part of her impossibly beautiful surroundings may at first seem outdated, but the Academy Award-winning actress is too good not to suggest as well the poignant, deep fear her character has of opening up emotionally to anybody. Ultimately, Summertime is the movie equivalent of a deep, satisfying sigh. --Robert Abele

Magnificent
Summertime is one of my favorite films. Katharine Hepburn and Rossano Brazzi are superbly cast in this great film. Venice is
a dream. Sad ending though. I would have stayed in Venice.

A Love Story Never to be Forgotten !!
I have only seen this film once, probably about 15 years ago when I was in my early twenties, but it stays with me as one of my all time favourites. I had scived an afternoon off work, came home with a bottle of wine, turned the TV on and Summertime or Summer Madness as it was called in the UK appeared. I instantly fell in love with this film, probably because I am a romantic at heart and you want the girl to get her man ! The innocence of Hepburn in this film is there for all to see, she gives her all and you cannot help but feel for this very naive woman in a city where inexperience in love is rare. Venice itself is shown to be a beautiful city, alive and full of energy, a perfect setting for this story to unfold.

I am English and live in the UK and have been unable to get a video copy of this film that will play on my TV, but I would recommend this film to anybody who enjoys a love story. It tugs at your heart and really does stay with you as one of Hepburns best films and her main main Rossano Brazzi is great too, he plays her emotions magnificently - Sit back and enjoy a truly wonderful film...

KATHERINE HEPBURN AT HER BEST
I LOVE this movie... it is one of my favorites...right up there with Katherine Hepburn's ALICE ADAMS, another favorite Hepburn movie. It is romantic, has spectacular Venetian scenery, is superbly acted, as are all Hepburn movies. Rosanno Brazzi is soooo handsome and most appealing. Many characters are just what I enjoy, somewhat eccentric, but very endearing. There is plenty of humor. Hepburn befriends an adorable young Italian boy who will steal your heart away. He lives 'on the edge', worships Hepburn, weaving his way throughout Venice wheeling and dealing his way through life ... charming all he does 'business' with. Who wouldn't love this enchanting movie? The story is A+++++.

I'll watch it over and over and over again and again...when I want to see an excellent story, have a few laughs ... and a good cry. It is that good! Highly recommend it...especially for sentimentalists who appreciate a good tearjerker.

The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Vol. 1
Released in DVD by Wea Corp (12 November, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
This four-disc set, bundled together in an appropriately cheesy but charming package that sports pop-up-book-styled artwork, compiles four episodes of the Peabody Award-winning comedy series. The "experiments" in question (Bloodlust, Catalina Caper, The Creeping Terror, and The Skydivers) aren't necessarily MST3K's finest hours--they don't hold a candle to the show's takes on The Magic Sword, The Atomic Brain, and The Brain That Wouldn't Die. But the barrage of verbal zingers and pop-culture references slung by hosts Joel Hodgson and Mike Nelson and their puppet pals Crow and Tom Servo are still quite funny, and should please both longtime fans and science fiction aficionados who don't take too much umbrage at having their beloved movies heckled.

The Collection is decidedly Mike-centric, with The Creeping Terror, Bloodlust, and The Skydivers all culled from his reign during the sixth season. Series creator Joel Hodgson's participation is relegated to season 2's Catalina Caper, a fan favorite that at one time was pulled from circulation over rights issues. As with most of Rhino's MST3K DVDs, each disc is dual-sided, with one side devoted to the original, uncut version of each film, and the other given over to the "MSTied" version. Theatrical trailers for each movie round out the remainder of the supplemental features. Given the size of this presentation, it might have been interesting to include some interviews with the show's writers and performers (Comedy Central once ran a passable special about the series), but fans will still appreciate having these four episodes together, each providing a wealth of laugh-out-loud moments. --Paul Gaita

Average review score:

not the best of, but a good collection
that really sums it up. These aren't the 4 best mst3k movies, but they'll still make you laugh.
Bloodlust stars Robert Reed(brady bunch dad) and not much else. Clincher is when the other guy gets refered to as the techie, and also complains that computer haven't been invented yet(the guy's a total nerd)
Sykdivers stars the sky in it's best performance yet.. and some people jumping out of planes. Once again the title of the film says it all. Don't expect a plot, just sky diveing. Somehow it's suppose to be a movie but feels more like a skydiving documentery. Clincher is the bar scene, which didn't fit into the moive.
Catalina Caper stars adults pretending to be kids, and of course creepy girl. Clincher is of course creepy girl song. It has a 60's Disney feel. yep it's lame.
The creeping Terror stars an alien with a long rug trailing behind it. This movie was so bad that before mst3k got it, it was overdubbed with a narrator, cause the acting is just that bad. Clincher is the dance scene. Ten minutes of a dance hall ends eventually with the creeping terror actually eating everyone, and not one person runs!! This is the best of the 4 movies.

Absolutely hilarious
This is a great set with a wide variety of film genres getting the MST3K treatment. Bloodlust is a gruesome remake of the Most Dangerous Game, Catalina Caper is a Tommy Kirk beach romp with some intentional "comedy", The Creeping Terror is possibly the worst and lowest budget monster-on-the-loose picture ever made, and The Skydivers is a Coleman Francis (doesn't that say it all?) "drama" involving some skydivers, a love-triangle gone awry and lots of cups of coffee from the same guy who brought us Beast of Yucca Flats. A great selection for both the long-term MST3K fan or someone just wanting to check out the show for the first time. Catalina Caper is worth it alone, as this comes from the legendarily hilarious second season of the show; when you hear Tom Servo singing "Creepy Girl" you'll know why MST3K is possibly the funniest show ever to be on television.

So It's a Skydiving Film... Without Skydivers. 'Nuff Said!
If you want a prime example of what it means to be a "cult classic" television series, MST3K is it. It even has a following that is very similar to Monty Python's Flying Circus. The show is loved by so many people all over the country. It was only a matter of time when we'd see some of these shows put into volume sets. "Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume 1" is an excellent set with some very funny shows.

Who would've thought that the perfect instruments of torture could be B movies? Well, we quickly learn that this is possible with the show. MST3K is all about a man (either Joel Hodgson or Mike Nelson) and his robots being forced to watch some of the worst movies ever created. In the process, they wisecrack their way through every single one of them. It is a talent to admire, as many of us can do the same thing; however, many of us cannot get the same hilarious results as these guys do.

The set includes the movies "Bloodlust," "Catalina Caper," "The Creeping Terror," and "The Skydivers." The best ones are "Bloodlust" and "The Skydivers," as they are really lousy movies; meaning that the boys are able to come up with some hilarious lines and observations. You also have the chance to see these films without the MST3K crew (why in the world would you want to subject yourself to that??!!). Theatrical trailers for the movies are also available on the DVDs.

This is a wonderful show that is brilliantly clever and fresh. It will always remain a favorite of mine, that's for sure. "Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume 1" is a treat to have and a joy to watch. You'll be watching each episode over and over again. A MUST for MST3K fans all around.

Shania Twain - The Platinum Collection
Released in DVD by Uni/Mercury Nashville (06 November, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Shania Twain
Nothing encourages one to ignore those silly contradictions in Shania Twain's music (is she country? is she pop?) like a collection of her highly playful videos. The Platinum Collection rolls right over boundaries of tradition and genre with its concentration of imaginative, often surprising visuals. "The Woman in Me," for instance, is set among Egypt's pyramids, while "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" finds a stunning Twain fronting a band of mindless hunks in a funny reversal of Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" video. "You're Still the One," easily one of Twain's most affecting songs, still holds up as a softly erotic short film. Even Twain's more prosaic videos (the go-kart mania of "You Win My Love") bear repeat viewing, but it's her heck-with-it aesthetic that leads to such unexpected sights as Irish step dancing in "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)." Then, of course, there are those hot pants in "Rock This Country!" Long may Shania wave. --Tom Keogh

Quite Boring and Slow
I think Shania has an amazing voice and i really like her albums but her videos are nothing great. She usually stands around in a eye catching outfit singing in most of these videos but nothing that would put you into a state of awe. I dont regret buying it cause it did have a lot of videos however i will probably not watch it again. I think you should look into buying her cds not this. Madonna however has GREAT videos and dancing and is very eyecatching. I recommend buying those instead of this.

How about some great sound?
Where is the sound? If you are a Shania fan you will love the crystal clear picture quality of this DVD....but the sound is terrible. The VHS versions of her videos is far superior to this effort.

What's Not To Like?!
I bought this DVD last Summer and have watched it quite a few times since. It has all of Shania's music videos except for "When", which is no big loss. Shania is a pleasure to see and hear--what's not to like?! I highly recommend it.

John Waters Collection #2: Polyester/ Desperate Living
Released in DVD by New Line Studios (04 September, 2001)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: John Waters
Director John Waters broke new boundaries of bad taste with his hilariously trashy tale of suburban misadventure Polyester. His favorite leading lady, transvestite Divine, plays Francine Fishpaw, a dissatisfied suburban housefrau who longs for a little romance in her life because her husband and children drive her crazy. Salvation arrives in the form of Tod Tomorrow (Tab Hunter), a drive-in owner who sweeps Francine off her feet (a mean task, given Divine's girth). But he's not all he's cracked up to be.

Everyone in Desperate Living's Mortville has some horrible secret to hide. The mentally unstable Peggy Gravel (Mink Stole, in a superb display of overacting) and her 300-pound-plus maid Grizelda must take it on the lam after Grizelda smothers Peggy's husband under her elephantine buttocks. They find themselves in Mortville, a shanty fiefdom ruled by the grotesque Queen Carlotta (the incomparable Edith Massey). The evil queen delights in tormenting her subjects, but Peggy and Grizelda soon team up with a pair of lesbian outcasts, and a rebellion is in the air. Notable for the absence of Waters regular Divine, this movie pushes the rest of the cast to their over-the-top best. Nasty, shabby, gross, and hilarious, this is John Waters at his best.

Average review score:

Do you have taste?
I'd rather be held hostage in a septic tank than ever sit through this horrible mess again. A real test of whether someone has any taste. I only recommend this to the most ghetto unfabulous people who live on Cherry street.

edith massey and those sets!
nuff has been said about polyester. as for desperate living; it ranks with female troubles. massey makes you forget divine (not an easy thing to do) and the visual look of the film stands with the look of both ulmer's the black cat and cocteau's blood of a poet. i genuflect to the waters of both female trouble and desperate living.

A classic
After having seen this movie for the grillionth time I still fall in love with it every time. You have to appreciate the campiness about it to "get" the film. The characters are over the top, the story line is filled with drama, and the ending is priceless. I absolutely recommend this movie to anyone who has not seen it. A++++

The Omen Collection
Released in DVD by Twentieth Century Fox Home Video (04 September, 2001)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Starring: Gregory Peck
Average review score:

A true thinking mans horror movie
I've always loved the Omen since it first appeared on screen. Now I have it on DVD in the entire 4 part series. I feel that although part one is the pace setter and is a great movie, part 2 is the best written story of the 3 originals. Damian's inability to escape who he is and go his own path is excellent.
Part 4 is a branch off the first 3 and has a few good moments but just doesn't quite have the edge that parts 1-3 have. It appeared that the writer was trying too hard to tie in the story with the new age crowd. In all, this series is a must have for the horror, psychological thriller fan in everyone.

a scary classic horror dvd set!!!
The omen came out in 1976, I think. It was after the exorcist which was one of the scariest movies made. i like this set it has all the omen movies.

The Omen series 1-4 / Rated 666 Pentagrams
The Omen

The Devil's childe incarnated here in the form of an adorable little English boy. Born into wealth & prestige, the son of senator destined for the presidency --- it seems that "Satan" planned well {of course}, to place "His" son in prominance, instead of in some dungheap of a manger {who does that remind you of?}.

One after another, obstacles {human & otherwise} are removed from the path of the Devil's son's path --- whomever dares get in His way.....

This movie draws from JC-mythology from the book of "Revelation" of an apocalyptic anti-christ / tyrant born to dominate the earth. He carries the dreaded "666" birthmark upon his head --- proof positive he is "The One".

In one particularly dramatic scene, Damian refuses to be led into an Episcopal church. Instead, his mother takes him to the zoo, where the resident animals panic & lash out in fear & anger. Small wonder --- he is Thanatos made flesh.

Born of a jackal, Damian is protected by exarchs of Hell --- a good-natured woman, & a strong & beautiful doberman --- erego, the diabolical connection. Damian.....the name has since been the favorite for infernal children.....

Damien Omen 2

The second six in the saga of this classic infernal trinity. Here, in military school, Damian comes to grips with the realization that he is this antichrist character, after being reassured by an official. Damian learns to grasp His power, & even his own brother is annihilated, who threatened to stop Damian's destiny.

Again, his parental guardians get the proverbial axe, as 'The Antichrist' continues on his path to world dominion.

Damien III: The Final Conflict

Damien is all grown up here, & has taken his place as President of 'Thorn Industries', a global conglomerate incorperating everything from product manufacture to food charities, & is firmly allied with the UN {of course}.

In the darkest of plans, children are sacrificed, a politician commits suicide {by the auspice of satanical forces}, & the homicidal efforts of a secret xian order to murder Damien Thorn rotinelt prove to be ineffectual & laughable.

Thorn has his own "Ritual Chamber", in which the nazarene is crucified, not inverse as you would expect, but turned around so that his naked posterior shows most humiliatingly. Thorn blasphemously rants at the nazarene in a messe noiresque fashion, & shows what proves to be one of the most powerfully sacriligeous scenes in cinematographic history.

"Nazarene......you have won NOTHING....."

Omen IV: A New Awakening

Damien Thorn is reborn in his subsequent sister Delia, a dark-haired little girl who is adopted by a politician destined fo the presidency --- sound familiar? The Antichrist is persistent.

A nun turned prostitute then evangelical jesus-freak is tormented with the knowledge of helping to bring 'the evil' into the world; she prays to 'god' for forgiveness that she didn't kill the child when she had the chance. Mother Superior has a heart attack after slapping the holy sheizer out of the pre-nun, & a crucifix inverts during an agonizing supplication.

Very early on, she shows signs of her 'wickedness' --- scratching her mother across the cheek while still but an infant.

As might be expected, her whole childhood is filled with a series of anomeles.

While at school, a ...-disturbing little brat picks on little Delia for some undetermined reason, perhaps as an exercise in masochism. In a particularly memorable scene, the brat makes off with Delia's lunchbox, dumping the contents onto the floor, stamping on it while laughing idiotically. Well, Delia doesn't take kindly to this antagonistic gesture, & forthwith slams her lunchbox square across the brute's ugly mug --- he just sits in the corner crying his little beady eyes out, after managing to strike little Delia. But she gets her revenge --- the next day, during a break, Delia makes off with his lunch, & runs out to mount & climb a ladder leading to the roof. When she gets quite a ways up, the little pigface follows, & begins to climb, but lo & behold, he's afraid of heights!

He ends up urinating all over himself in front of the whole class. Ah, sweet revenge......

Next, babysitter selection comes along, & who manages to get the job, but a new-age flake / weakan type.

One day, Delia comes in from playing, & notices the babysitter sitting in the kitchen with her mother, with a book displayed on the table, entitled, "The Book of Light"; I paraphrase --- "It's all about healing, & crystals.....", "And stupid junk!" yells Delia, slamming the book on the floor. A truly wonderful scene.

Another scene involves curious Delia inspecting the weakan's crystal necklace. Guess what? It turns black. As do all of the crystals in her drawer.

Another incident involved the babysitter taking a shower, when all of a sudden, she sees an inverted cross appear in the steam on the mirror. Frightened, she finally employs one of her 'wippie' friends to 'feel the vibe' --- well, he promptly becomes quite ill, almost smashing his car into Delia's 'mother's'.

The weakan arranges to trick Delia into attending a weaker - blindlight convention, where all manner of occultnik idiocy is enacted. By & by, as Delia passes the different booths, the practitioners are horrified by her presence, much like rabbits in the face of a stalking predator, until she is finally sabotaged, & forced to take a Kirlian photograph, which develops quite predictably. Swirls of black & red paint, which denotes chaos.

Eventually, one of the flame tossers ignites himself, which catches upon the roof of a booth, & soon, the whole place is a raging inferno, with Delia smirking in its wake.
Eventually, Delia's 'mother' gets the 'xoid cooties', the paranoia bug, consulting priests & pastors about the rise of the Antichrist, the book of Revelations, etc.

Finally, with the help of the 'lambs of god', she manages to justify her paranoia, & makes up her mind for infanticide. Not surprising, actually, considering that the judeo-xian god has been guilty of this atrocity twice {jeezwiz & Ezekiel's son Abraham --- the latter, which was a cruel mind-scrambling joke}.

The Detective helping her gets demolished, amidst a chorus of spechtral dark angels.

The little nun finally finds relief by the fang, & the weaker is destoyed. The 'mother' stalks towards the bedroom, as Delia holds the infant; the 'mother' points her gun, the baby displays the characteristic 'Mark of the Beast', & then.........?

Overall, Omen 4 is very entertaining, without the demoralization. Delia proves herself to be quite a demon-spawn.

M. Hulot's Holiday - Criterion Collection
Released in DVD by Criterion Collection (06 January, 2004)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Jacques Tati
Starring: Jacques Tati and Nathalie Pascaud
Forefather of Rowan Atkinson's Mr. Bean, Jacques Tati's Monsieur Hulot--a recurring character in several of his movies--is a blithely clumsy troublemaker, an insouciant twit who leaves uproar in his wake without being aware of it. Trying to describe this 1953 comedy is next to impossible except to say it is a series of vignettes at a vacation resort, with the distracted Hulot providing a lot of laughs. Tati directs, and in a way what that really means is that he composes this movie with a perfect eye and ear for the comic possibilities in everything: composition, lighting, minimal marble-mouth dialogue, certain sounds (a duck call, a door repeatedly opening and shutting). This is a superior work that ranks among all-time classic comedies. --Tom Keogh
Average review score:

At last, it's back again
This magnificent movie will again be available from Criterion in early 2004. It'll be well worth waiting for.

Criterion DVD back in print in 2004 !
Criterion has just announced that their long-discontinued DVD versions of Jacque Tati films will be put back in print in 2004. They released a statement that reads, "At long last Criterion has succeeded in renewing its rights to Jacques Tati's classic films Mon Oncle, M. Hulot's Holiday, Jour de Fête and Playtime. The original Criterion editions of Mon Oncle and M. Hulot's Holiday will be back in print starting in January of 2004. These DVDs will be identical to Criterion's original releases in every way. Watch [ Criterion's web site criterionco.com ] for further news about Playtime and Jour de Fête."

Hence, to those who are planning to buy these DVDs, avoid buying those highly-priced used discs from other sellers.

(For those who are interested in the film, please refer to my April 19, 2001 review.)

The Wonderful Mr. Hulot
Jacques Tati's Monsieur Hulot has been compared to Mr. Bean and Charlie Chaplin and that's not a bad comparision. Tati has said that he patterned Mr. Hulot after Buster Keaton and that's closer, but he has put his own spin on the character Mr. Hulot.

Mr. Hulot's Holiday is a good place to start admiring Jacques Tati's Mr. Hulot films but they are all great, all full of sight gags and observations on human nature. Mr. Hulot wanders and blunders through his holiday like a big kid observing, but not even trying to understand the odd behavior of the adults around him. The sight gags are fabulous, often leaving Mr. Hulot wondering how did this get from here to there or how did that happen. If you blink you will have to watch the film again to catch what you have missed. There is very little dialog - Jacques Tati was an aficinado of silent films - so if you do not like watching a subtitled film don't be put off. And don't be put off by the statement: "non-American" humor, this is funny stuff. Jacques Tati is one of the great comics.

All the Mr. Holot films are equally brilliant; they will leave you smiling, laughing, and ocassionally - as when Mr. Hulot is trying to put out a fire in a shed full of fireworks - gasping for air.
