Jo Dee Messina - Video Collection
Released in DVD by Rhino (12 February, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Jo Dee Messina
Average review score:

Jo Dee is brilliant
I bought this DVD although I am in Australia, because I knew that the chances of getting a Region 4 copy are slim. Jo Dee is not that well known in Australia, and probably also not that well known in Region 4 countries. Luckily, my computer DVD Rom is capable of viewing Region 1, otherwise I would miss out. As an Australian customer, I have only seen Jo Dee occasionally on Pay TV, and had seen "Bye-Bye" and "Burn", but none of the others were familiar to me. The track listing is only 9 songs, and it would have been even better if there were more, but this satisfies my longing for the moment.

"Burn" is great, especially since she asked permission of our wonderful Tina Arena if she could remake her exceptional hit song. I thought Tina did a stunning job of it, but Jo Dee more than did it justice. I have to say the video isn't quite as good as I'd hoped though. Jo Dee is a beautiful woman, but the makeup did not make her look as wonderful as usual.

"That's the Way" - this video unfortunately annoyed me. It was too fun and cute for me. I had built a picture in my mind of the song, and the colourful silliness of this video just didn't really work for me. "Closer" is okay - I love the song, the video is alright. "Because you love me" was pretty good, very symbolic, although I swear there are times when you can see her sort of waiting for the shot to be over.

"Stand beside me" is great - classic song, great video. She does it wonderfully, and looks beautiful. "I'm alright" is also great. The older songs seem to embrace her strong beauty and really work with it, whereas the newer videos appear to try to soften her, which loses some of her appeal to me. "Bye Bye" again wonderful.

"Do you wanna make something of it" again great, as is "Heads Carolina Tails California".

So I really liked the first two albums and their videos, but the newer videos are trying to remake her look and I don't completely agree. She has a fantastic smile and when she's looking too serious you can't see it!!!

Great DVD though, I'm very glad that the internet has allowed me to purchase something like this. In Australia I doubt this will become available.

how can I find out?
I've seen most of her videos...I'm Alright is awesome, Bye Bye is my favorite video of hers, I saw half of Heads Carolina, Tails California, etc...but I don't have this yet, I might buy it, but I want to know what songs are on it, but I can't find that here. If anyone could tell me how to find out, or just give me a list of the songs, that'd be awesome. I mostly want to know if the video for "You Wanna Make Something Of It" is on there, or "Downtime" (I don't know if Downtime HAD a video though).

Jo Dee is the greatest!!

Okay, the verrrrrrrry rarely seen on CMT or GAC "Do You Wanna Make Something Of It" ALONE makes this DVD well worth the price, but add the never released "Closer" and this truly becomes a MUST-HAVE item!! "Closer" is like a video within a video and shows Jo Dee's light-hearted side.

The DVD also contains everything from the vintage "Heads Carolina, Tails California" (how hot is that guy?!?!) to "Burn". The release of the DVD was supposedly delayed by the record company for the addition of her latest "Bring on the Rain" - which is notably absent. :( The video for "That's the Way", Jo Dee shows off her dancing prowess with some very asthetically-pleasing dancers and "I'm Alright" actually features her MOM!

"Stand Beside Me" beautifully illustrates the song perfectly, as does the video for the Phil Vassar-penned "Bye Bye". My personal fave is the haunting video for the touching "Because You Love Me".

It is cool to seeing how Jo Dee has evolved from "Heads Carolina..." to "Burn", which was filmed in a castle in upstate New York. This is a great DVD for any country music fan. Jo Dee shares the screen with everyone and everything from a mini-Jo Dee, to her mom, to a '66 GTO, to a hot guy, and everything in between! Awesome, awesome, awesome stuff!! I wish there were some extras like behind the scenes footage or Jo Dee's commentary on each video, but oh well. Thanks Curb Records for giving the fans what they want!

My Little Margie - DVD Collection #1
Released in DVD by Vci Home Video (19 December, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: My Little Margie and Gale Storm
Average review score:

Albright, Get In Here And Watch These Episodes!!
Finally! The show I absolutely loved as a kid is available on DVD, and not just a few episodes either... 12 big episodes on 2 discs, plus a bonus color "Lucy Show" episode (a tease by VCI to get you to buy that set) and all at an extremely reasonable price too! Why this show vanished from syndication sometime in the late '60s is beyond me, and I've missed it dearly ever since. Several generations have been missing out on a true TV classic that fell through the cracks. The episodes hold up remarkably well after all these years too... in fact, they have held up better than "I Love Lucy", which is a unarguable classic, but let's face it, they're extremely dated overall.

A few of the classic episodes included are:
-The one where Margie babysits the chimp that likes to attack Vernon!

-Mrs Odetts trying to get the money from her trust fund to buy that fast sports car with the chrome manifold!

-Margie's mental breakdown/The horse that is or isn't there.

-Vern & Margie pose as hillbillies to regain some old stock certificates that have some worth after all.

So don't be a lunkhead like Freddy... be as cool as Mrs. Odetts and pick this one up! If you're a fan of classic TV, you will not be disappointed! If you've never seen this show before, you're in for a real treat.

Keep 'em coming VCI! I'll buy all the Margie on DVD that you can put out there!

Looks great, still funny!
When I first discovered that a two volume DVD set of My Little Margie was to be marketed, I couldn't believe it! I didn't think I'd ever see even one show from this great old series again, let alone the 24 that are included in these two sets. Besides, I figured, even if this early/mid-fifties gem ever surfaced again it would be on TV Land or Nickelodeon and would be ruined by nightmarish commercial breaks (we have DSS), squeezed end-credits, and inane voiceovers.

VCI to the rescue! I've just reviewed the two DVDs in this first set and watched the first two shows on disk #1 and am extremely pleased! Knowing how things unfortunately are sometimes done these days, I had feared a poor quality transfer and a certain amount of butchering to have been done, but that's not the case at all, thank goodness!

I recall these shows from my early childhood, and they look and sound exactly as I remember them. Even the elaborate musical score that accompanies the end credits is there, complete and impressive as when brand new. The opening gimmick, where the facing images in the father/daughter photographs talk about each other, are there too--still clever, still cute, still funny! In fact, these shows are exactly as first viewed almost 50 years ago, but thanks to the clever writing (those early TV writers cut their teeth in the demanding medium of radio comedy) and the outstanding talents of Charles Farrell and Gale Storm (sigh!), these shows are still funny and engaging. I couldn't be more pleased!

One last note about the quality. We tend to forget how relatively murky television was in the Fifties. Broadcasting equipment was primitive but improving rapidly. However, because microwave and satellite transmission had not yet arrived, network affiliates in the major cities actually got their prime time shows from the networks in the mail!!! Yes, the studios sent out 16mm film copies of the shows, and that's how the local stations showed them in the appointed time slots. Over the years ensuing, hobbyists have collected these old affiliate films, and that's in part why they are now available and in such good condition. Since these My Little Margie DVDs are made from those fine 16mm broadcast originals, instead of kinescope copies, the image quality is actually better than when they were originally broadcast! And the sound, while not stereo or anything like it, is at least up to mono TV broadcast standards of 15 or 20 years ago.

My verdict -- these are terrific DVDs, and if you like lovely, perky, endearing, sparkly-eyed feminine firecrackers, you will love Gale Storm, just as I did as an 8-year-old boy!

Classic TV Series Back From The Dead
How wonderful for VCI to bring this classic TV series to DVD.This extremely popular show from the 50's even rivaled "I Love Lucy" while at it's height. DVD quality is surprisingly good considering that no restoration has been done - images are clear with only a slight visible grain - sound is acceptable. However bios. are sketchy ad incomplete - Gale had an immensely sucessful recording career(check out her CD - Dark Moon - The Best Of Gail Storm on Varese Sarabande), which she gave up at it's height to work on another prosperous TV series "The Gail Storm Show", a precursor to the Love Boat" TV series. Margie is real classic TV - contrary to public opinion, the 50"s are classic television - not the 60's or 70's. Hey, ... - pick it up!! PS - Gail Storm - alive and well in LA - Hey Gail - how about a recorded interview for vol. 2!!

Orphen - The Perfect Collection
Released in DVD by A.D. Vision (22 April, 2003)
MPAA Rating:
Based on a series of fantasy novels by Yoshinobu Akita, Majutsushi Orphen (literally Sorcerer Stabber Orphen, 1998) is a rambling but entertaining saga of a pure heart triumphing over seemingly insurmountable challenges. Orphen is the adopted name of Krylancelo, a promising young sorcerer. Azalie, an older girl who was like a sister to him during their training, tried to use magic that was too powerful for her--and was transformed into the dragon Bloody August. When their wise instructor, Childman seemed bent on destroying the dragon, Orphen left his tutelage in the Tower of Fangs, vowing to save Azalie himself. Six years later, he's still on that quest, joined by his apprentice Majic and feisty blonde Cleao, plus the comic brothers Volcan and Dortin. As they wander through cities and enchanted ruins, Orphen's story is recounted in flashbacks. The world they wander througn is a decidedly odd one that mixes elements of feudal kingdoms, the American West, and Europe during the Industrial Revolution.

The translation is problematic, with the English dub differing substantially from the subtitles: the blue puppy Cleao adopts is called a "Deep Dragon" in the subtitles, but a "Wolfen" in the spoken dialogue. The animation is erratic, and the design of Orphen's face changes noticeably in the last few episodes. But Orphen remains such a likable character, the viewer willingly overlook any flaws. Note: the plastic case comes apart easily. (Rated 12 and older: violence, grotesque imagery, nudity) --Charles Solomon

Average review score:

A fantastic experience
Having gone into Orphen with no idea what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised from the beginning. I'm not normally a fan of fantasy titles, but there was something about this one that just demanded I keep watching.

The story is the highlight here; it's interesting and mysterious from the get-go and unfolds excellently throughout the series. One of my favorite aspects about this series is that it sort of begins in the middle of the story, and it unfolds not just forwards, but backwards as well, slowly piecing the past together via flashbacks and revelations.

I found the characters to be interesting and enjoyable. They made me laugh when I needed to, and made me sympathetic at just the right moments. Most interesting is the way things are turned on their head halfway through the series; you'll find yourself wondering who's an enemy and who isn't.

In the end, I thoroughly enjoyed this series. It was funny, intruiging, and dramatic. This is a title that definitely gets overlooked far too much; take my advice and check it out. I highly recommend it.

Addictively oustanding
The first time I seen Orphen a friend had it. I did want to give it back. Orphen is magically addictive and oustandingly plotted.

Seriously enchantingly heart warming
Orphen is one of the most enchanting magical shows I have ever seen! The serious adventures Orphen draws me in and the romance steals me over. I give Orghen five stars because the well thought out story line. I hope there's more to come!

Sailor Moon Super S - Pegasus Collection V
Released in DVD by Geneon Entertainment (19 November, 2002)
MPAA Rating:
These adventures follow the pattern established on the previous disc, as the search for the "Mirror of Beautiful Dreams" continues. Zirconia, the agent of the evil Nehelenia, summons the Amazon Quartet (Cerecere, Pallapalla, Junjun, and Vesves) to find the Mirror. Curiously, the four girls in circus costumes refer to Zirconia as "Old Hag" and "she," although the character's English voice is clearly male. The members of the Quartet attack a girl who literally has stars in her eyes for Raye/Rei, and pose as dentists to trap Serena/Usagi and Rini/Chibiusa. Their other victims include a preschool teacher, a starving artist (who's hungry enough to eat Serena's cooking), and two boys from Rini's school. Each member of the foursome uses a "Remless" to battle the Sailor Scouts and Tuxedo Moon, but they're undone when Rini (Chibiusa) summons Pegasus with her "Twinkle Yell." (Rated 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery, brief nudity) --Charles Solomon

funny stuff
Most people didn't like SuperS for its turn to comedy after the seriouse Super. But I liked it and this DV has some of the funnier episodes.

I hate Sailor Moon.
I used to love Sailor Moon when I was in high school. Yeah I loved the dub. I had no problem with the subtitled version because I pretended it never existed. My head is clear and I'm more grown up. I realize now that SM is pretty much a kid's cartoon with questionable content. I don't recommend it for anyone. It's too dumb for 13+ crowd and too mature for kids.
It's just plain dumb. Oh by the way Pink Sugar Heart attack. ^_^ if you are older than seven you'll look pretty dumb twirling around with a moonstick shouting that dopey phrase.
I recommend more mature serials like Vampire Hunter D and kid safe shows like Kimba the white lion.

Amazon Quartet !
Six episodes with the Amazon Quartet as the nemesis of the Sailor Soldiers. The Amazon Quartet are some of the most interesting villians in the Sailor Moon series since they embody innocence and cruelty often at the same time. Each episode is about someone with her dream symbolized by a dream mirror. It is interesting that when the character has her dream mirror knocked out of her, the character becomes lifeless. I suppose that is what happens when someone's dream is lost, the person is still alive but yet lifeless since all passions are knocked out of her.

Incidentally, the Japanese voice actress that played Sailor Moon also voiced Agent Excel in the Excel Saga.

Bob Hope Tribute Collection - Monsieur Beaucaire / Where There's Life Double Feature
Released in DVD by Universal Studios (01 April, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Sidney Lanfield
Starring: Bob Hope and Signe Hasso
Average review score:

Double feature - double pleasure
"Monsieur Beaucaire" (1946), this is Bob Hope at a top performance for a Costume Comedy at the style of "The princess & the pirate". The action occurs in the courts of France and Spain, nations on the verge of war. Bob Hope is Monsieur Beaucaire, the King Louis XV's barber forced to impersonate a duc named Le Chandre, or lose his head. At the same time, in Madrid, the traitorus Don Francisco commander of the spanish Army, wants to prevent the upcoming marriage of Le Chandre with Maria (a Spanish princess) and plans eliminate a Bob Hope, in order to destabilize the crown, unleashing a war between the countries. At the end, we see a Bob avoid the homicidal plans with lots of comic situations and gags. Very very Funny!

"Where There's Life" (1947), a year later Bob had a royal performance, when he is convinced by the General Katrina Grimovitch (Signe Hasso) that he is the heir of Barovia, and must ascend to the throne in order to let organized the fist democratic election in the country avoiding that an evil organization take the control. Of course this is a good excuse
for persecutions and gags of all kind. Very funny (only?).

This double feature disc represents a good value for Hope's fans and for all who want an inexpesive laugh now or later.

GREAT movie and DVD
Because I was only looking for "Monsieur Beaucaire", I was reluctant to buy this disc (it is only one disc not two) but I did and was pleasantly surprised by the hidden treasure "Where There's Life."

"Monsieur Beaucaire" is often seen on TV and is Bob Hope at his best. If you liked "Princess and The Pirate" then you will enjoy this title.

"Where There's Life" rarely shows on TV and is one of those movies you remember seeing, enjoying but just can't remember the title. It is a Hope "GEM" with an ensemble cast that delievers a wonderful movie.

The greatest gift....
I own 5 of the titles in this collection and find them all really interesting from a film history and entertainment point of view. My favorite is Spielberg. That said, I recently needed a gift for someone who is a major major film buff, and I got this for him and he loves it. Not only do the DVD's make him smile, but the box itself is stupendous and looks amazing on his shelf (impresses the visitors:)

Sure wish someone would spend this kind of money on me:)

The Directors Series
This series is fascinating for filmmakers as well as people that simply enjoy movies. It takes you on an indepth journey with 22 feature film directors as viewed through their eyes as well as famous actors that they have worked with. As in any documentary setting, the editions vary in quality, but the good ones make the purchase well worth while. In particular I enjoyed the interviews with: Ron Howard, John McTiernan, Steven Speilberg, Milos Foreman, and Joel Schumacher. These interviews expand the viewers horizons and allow them to get an inside look at the successes and failures that each feature director has experienced. Well worth the purchase...

Fish: Kettle of Fish - Video Collection

MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)

US Fan
Fish CDs are almost imposible to find in the US. So I have never heard any of his solo work, but bought this DVD knowing and loving his music and lyrics while he was in Marillion. I was not disappointed. Not a bad apple in the 'Kettle'. What even suprised me more was hearing some of the lyrics from the Unreleased songs from Marillions 'Clutching at Straws' disc 2. Fish is probably one of the best artists in music today. It is unfortunate that he gets no airplay in the US(why?? I don't know)!

The First Fish DVD!
I was thrilled to be able to see all the videos Fish made during the early nineties that most of America has never gotten to see. Worth the wait. Fish is excellent. When this item arrived the packing slip had this listed as Kettle of Fish - Artist Unknown. This should be available with all of Fish's stuff. Instead it is just miscellaneously filled under titles with Fish in them. It is not that hard to figure out who the artist is, really. To all Marillion fans, Fish fans, and Progressive Rock Freaks - this is for you! Hope that Fish will soon release some of his live concerts on DVD. Seeing him in concert is an amazing experience. One of the best performers in rock music. America wake up! Buy this! (Also includes an interesting interview where he describes the making of each video).

Good Night Gorilla & More Bedtime Stories (Scholastic Video Collection)
Released in DVD by New Video Group (26 August, 2003)
MPAA Rating: G (General Audience)
Average review score:

Moons, Hats and Bedtime
A wonderful collection of animated tales based on popular children's books. I bought this one because Good-Night Gorilla and The Napping House are favorites at home.

In Good-Night Gorilla a small gorilla manages to sneak out of the zoo and takes the other animals with him to the zookeeper's house. Very true to the original book.

In How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight, we learn that they do not fuss and fume and neither should you. Very interestingly done as the story moves from house to house.

Happy Birthday Moon is about a little bear who decides the Moon must have a birthday and sets out celebrate. A charming story.

The Napping House is creatively done with stills to show a house where everyone is sleeping and what happens when an awake flea comes by.

Patrick is a wonderful wordless story of a boy/man who buys a fiddle and fills the world with wonder and color.

The Paperboy tells the story of a small boy and how he runs his paper route when the rest of the world is sleeping. Illustrated with sequential stills to simulate movement.

The Hat is the story of a penniless veteran who comes across a marvelous hat that changes his fortunes around.

Good Night Gorilla
My 2 1/2 yr old son and 3 1/2 yr. old daughter love this dvd. My daughter loves the gorilla and although the hyenna tends to look like a bear, this dvd does the book well and gets its giggles. The other stories are winners too, my son loves How Dinosaurs say Good Night. I recommend this one and if you dont have Where the Wild Things Are, I recommend that one as well.
