Blowin' Smoke
Released in DVD by Avalanche Video (02 April, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Paul Todisco
Average review score:

Pretty good!
I was channel surfing a few nights ago, and the reason that I stopped on this movie was because I recognized the Carousel Center Mall in Syracuse. At first I couldn't believe anybody would ever do a movie in Syracuse, so I continued watching it. After a few minutes, however, I began to like the movie because of the plot. It's a good comedy, and yet has a good story line.

Absolutely unbelievable movie.
This is a movie I can watch over & over without ever getting bored. At first, I when I watched it, I found it enjoyable in something of a Mallrats sort of way, mainly because Steve Zahn just blows you away with his humor & stories.

But it is greater than that. The depression that Josh Hamilton is going through is very strong & very real. He is apathetic about most everything, and floats around with his post relationship depression, but does care strongly for his friends Nicole & Freak.

This movie is hypnotic. You find yourself thinking about it long after having seen it. The humor is amazing & it is brilliantly human.

A Wonderful Film That Will Make You Laugh And Think
This film is a great little discovery. It mixes humor, alienation, drugs, introspection, love, pain, sex, and the meaning of life in a way that'll keep you talking with your friends for days afterwards. It's rare to find a movie that brings together light-heartedness and profundity with such seamlessnes, especially in a first-time director. Paul Todisco takes us inside the world of David Keenan, through his exploits, his failures and his joys...and by the time he's done, were better people because of it. A truly classic depiction of growing up in modern America, Blowin' Smoke (aka Freak Talks About Sex) excels at touching upon what's real in each of us. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Pillow Talk
Released in DVD by Universal Studios (04 February, 2003)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director: Michael Gordon
Starring: Rock Hudson and Doris Day
Jan Morrow (Doris Day) and Brad Allen (Rock Hudson) have never met, but they're sworn enemies because of one small appliance in their lives: the telephone. The two share a party line, and Jan is outraged over the amount of time Bill spends wooing women over the phone. A convenient triangle emerges when a client (Tony Randall) of Jan's--she's an interior decorator--falls in love with her and happens to be Brad's old college chum. When Brad makes the connection, he decides to try to court Jan himself, to make her more sympathetic to his phone woes. Of course, she'd never go for such a heel, so he passes himself off as Rex Stetson, a Texas rancher visiting New York. The ensuing tale, albeit predictable, is lots of fun, with some quick-witted dialogue and some clever use of split-screens for the phone calls. Thelma Ritter is hilarious as Jan's always-hung-over maid, Alma; and the pairing of Rock and Doris works beautifully, as always. --Jenny Brown

Ah, Pillow Talk between Doris and Rock
This is a classic and I never miss it when it's on television. A terrific tale of mistaken identity turned deception. Tony Randall is delightful as a cad who wants Doris! Terrific plot, excellent performances, pacing, and twists. Terrific movie!

Fun and entertaining!
Rock and Doris are magic together in this delightful 1959 romp. The film is too fun and Thelma Ritter's comments are the capper. I highly recommend this delightful pairing in this film. Although it may seem terribly sweet and dated, in contemporary film genres trashed with violence, sex and computer wizardry, this film relies upon acting.

An all time favorite!
I have to admit - I love this movie. It is very, very funny and so clever that even though it is a very dated product of it's era - it still always feels fresh and lively to me. Doris Day is adorable here and Rock Hudson is hysterical. (Shades of truths to come!) Tony Randall was a great comic foil and Thelma Ritter still makes me alugh out loud even after 100+ viewings. It is so 60's chic - the clothes, cars, apartments - it still seems cool! Enjoy! They can't make them like this anymore.

Party Girl
Released in DVD by First Look Pictures (10 December, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Daisy von Scherler Mayer
Starring: Parker Posey and Omar Townsend
"Queen of the Indies" Parker Posey (Dazed and Confused, Waiting for Guffman, The Daytrippers) shines in this lightweight comedy about a romance between a floundering downtown party girl and a falafel vendor set in Manhattan's trendy loft and club scene. Posey is utterly charming as Mary, the 23-year-old whose talents are pretty much limited to "partying, flirting, making stuff up." Her penchant for partying gets her evicted from her apartment, whereupon--unable to pay her fine or decide what she wants to do with her life--she receives financial and career help from her godmother, who gets her a job in the New York Public Library system. Does the Dewey decimal system hold the key to Mary's future? Director Daisy von Scherler Mayer went on to direct Madeline (1998). --Jim Emerson

Very stupid!
Rated 1 star. As low as it gets at rating these movies. I am trying to resell this at another website. Best to rent or borrow from local library.

Hey Hey Helloooo......
I saw this movie for the first time right out of college and it inspired me to move to NYC. It brilliantly captures the recreational substance induced hazy world of party goers all over Soho. Mary, the ultimate party diva is forced to learn responsiblity when her godmother, Judy, gives her a job as a library clerk..."A trained monkey learned this system on PBS in a matter of hours!" Mary works. Mary shoplifts from other people's closets..."Hello Chanel!" Mary falls for her local falafel vendor. Mary gets the guy. Mary loses the guy. Mary parties. Mary learns something about herself...mostly that her shallow lifestyle will only last so long. The dialogue is crisp and funny, the characters are well developed, and Parker Posey's performance is brilliant. A very young and very sexy Liev Schreiber delivers the goods as well. This movie is filled with so much fun....the scene with "Natasha" alone is worth the price of the disc. This is a must have!

As only Parker Posey can do...
This is a great Parker Posey film. It may seem cheesy at first, but it gets better. I love this film the more I watch it. Parker Posey plays Mary, who works at the library at first against her will but she grows to love the library along with the falafel boy. There are several classic Parker moments as only Parker can do them.

Watch this film with the intent of watching Parker do her thing.

Bananas
Released in DVD by Mgm/Ua Studios (05 July, 2000)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Woody Allen
Starring: Woody Allen and Louise Lasser
Woody Allen's second film as a director was a wild, unpredictable, and unlikely comedy about a product-tester named Fielding Mellish (Allen), who can't quite connect with the woman of his dreams (Louise Lasser, Allen's ex-wife). He accidentally winds up in South America as a freedom fighter for a guerrilla leader who looks like Castro. Once he assumes power, the new dictator quickly goes insane--which leaves Fielding in charge to negotiate with the U.S. The film is chockfull of wonderfully bizarre gags, such as the dreams Fielding recounts to his shrink about dueling crucified messiahs, vying for a parking place near Wall Street. Look for an unknown Sylvester Stallone in a tiny role--but watch this film for Allen's surprisingly physical (and always verbally dexterous) humor. --Marshall Fine

Quiero la Noche
If you love Woody Allen, you'll love this movie. The sheer wit and sardonic humour makes me laugh till my stomach aches. There are many immortal lines like when the dictator says, "I've been poisoned so many times, I've developed an immunity." I used to know a spook who said the very same thing. The satire on Communism, Dictatorship and Fidel Castro is hilarious! Woody's girl is the typical pinko liberal who lusts after rich, powerful and famous men. The classic scene is where Woody as the guerilla leader robs a sandwich shop to feed his men. And when Woody practices grenade throwing, he holds the live "pineapple" grenade and throws away the pin with ludicrous results. Finally, when the government is overthrown, the leader of the guerillas goes bananas and says, "L'etat c'est moi" which translated means "I am the State". When it comes to dictators, that's what they all say. I love the meaningful theme song, "Quiero la Noche" It means I like the night in Spanish. Enjoy! By Dr. Michael Lim the Travelling Gourmet

EXCELLENT SCREWBALL COMEDY
LOVED THE SCENE WITH THE TRANSLATOR BY THE PLANE. I STRIKE LAUGHING THINKING ABOUT IT ON THE SUBWAY SOMETIMES, PEOPLE START LOOKING AT ME WEIRD, WHICH JUST COMPOUNDS THE LAUGHER FOR ME.

YEA BABY YEA!

Still Hilarious
Within a brief period of time Woody made Take the Money and Run, Bananas, and Sleeper, establishing himself as the funniest actor-director in ages. Like Take the Money and Run, this parody is mostly a series of sketch pieces, strung together by an unlikely premise. Just as when I first saw it over 30 years ago, some of the bits don't work, but more do. I particularly liked Howard Cosell commenting on a political assasination, and Woody trying to seduce a beautiful young revolutionary.

Jerry Maguire (Special Edition)
Released in DVD by Columbia Tristar Hom (30 April, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Cameron Crowe
Starring: Tom Cruise, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Renée Zellweger
One of the best romantic comedies of the 1990s, this box-office hit cemented writer-director Cameron Crowe's reputation as "the voice of a generation." Crowe could probably do without that label, but he's definitely in sync with the times with this savvy story about a sports agent (Tom Cruise) whose fall from grace motivates his quest for professional recovery, and the slow-dawning realization that he needs the love and respect of the single mom (Renée Zellweger in her breakthrough role) who has supported him through the worst of times. This is one of Cruise's best, most underrated performances, and in an Oscar-winning role, Cuba Gooding Jr. plays the football star who remains Jerry Maguire's only loyal client on a hard road to redemption and personal growth. If that sounds touchy-feely, it is only because Crowe has combined sharp entertainment with a depth of character that is rarely found in mainstream comedy. --Jeff Shannon

Overrated? Perhaps. Good? You betcha!
I'm sorry... but this was a good movie. Was it earth-shattering? Life changing? NO. Was it worthy of an Oscar? Was it socially conscious? NOpe. But did it touch us??? Oh, yeah, baby! You complete me... Oh, my, goodness!! How many people on their first date that night ended up going further than they meant to???

Some terrific comedic moments as well--Tom Cruise closes the deal, he's riding on victory and he wants to blast the radio to something appropriate and what's on??? The slip and slide pace of Free Falling... Funny.

A good movie. Not as good as the hype, but don't punish a film for its buzz.

Very Overrated but Good Movie
I am not a Tom Cruise fan. I was a child of the 80's and didn't like his films then and still do my best to run from them. J.M. was seen as a comeback for Cruise whose career had stalled since the early nineties.

J.M. travels through Jerry's mind which left me asking the question why. Jerry wasn't the true center of the story so he shouldn't have been the center of the film. The supporting characters that Jerry surrounded himself with were the ones that brought us closer to Jerry's thoughts more than Jerry himself. A better title and narration from Cruise or Cuba Gooding Jr. would have added an extra spark to the vehicle.

The supporting cast ruled the show and left Cruise in the dust. Tom's acting was bland and boring. He played Jerry like he didn't want to touch the role with a ten-foot pole. He wasn't believable because he seemed too young to be such a successful sports agent and Cruise doesn't have the persona of someone with such a fast paced life. In my opinion he was not the right choice for the film. This movie is packed with extra talent. Cuba Gooding Jr. had his breakout role here and his Oscar was well deserved. Rod Tidwell kept this film at its best. The movie should have been named after his character because he stole any hope Cruise had of claming J.M. as his star film. Kelly Preston is overlooked but good. Renee Zewellegger was another weak spot next to Cruise. Every time I saw her I asked the question why she was cast. Being a fellow Texan I think Renee's acting could have been better. She played Dorothy too giddy and she wasn't believeable as a single mother. Plus Renee and Cruise had zero chemisty and I fast forwarded every scene they were in together. Regina King was wonderful. She had sparks with everyone including Cruise and I wanted to see more of her on the screen. Jay Mohr is not someone I care for but he played the slimy sports agent part to the T. There were a lot of cameos from sports stars and actor Beau Bridges.

The story was rather weak. The movie was way too long and there was no reason it had to be. A lot of footage wasn't necessary. We didn't need to see Jerry's bachelor party or every single client Jerry had. The movie went off base and should have stuck to the basis. The length was the biggest problem. This was a modern 90's film it didn't need to be this long.

J.M. is a wonderful sports movie and you learn the football life and lingo fast. It was interesting to see the deals and the problems sports figures and their agents go through. The football game scenes were the best. They were realistic and kept up the momentum of the movie even when you felt it was dragging along. The love story was weak and not needed. When Dorothy and Jerry got married I totally gave up on Cruise and Renee's acting because it seemed like they were just rolling along with no point.

J.M. brought a lot of talent to the big screen and is a pretty decent movie. It got hype for the wrong reasons. Instead of pumping up Cruise's timid performance the glory should have been given to the true star of the film, Cuba Gooding Jr. This is great for sports fans.

Excellent
Great acting, great script. Has all sorts of emotions. An awesome movie that will make you smile, laugh and cry. The scene where Cruise and Zellwegger are on the front porch after their first date is the most sensual in cinematic history.

My Science Project
Released in DVD by (03 February, 2004)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Jonathan R. Betuel
Starring: John Stockwell and Danielle von Zerneck
Faced with not graduating unless he completes his science project, a high school gear-head sneaks into a nearby Air Force base, looking for some gizmo he can pass off as his own invention. What he finds is an alien energy device that rips holes in both time and space, infesting the school with everything from dinosaurs to the Viet Cong. Writer-director Jonathan Betuel tries to mine some of the same veins as Weird Science and Real Genius (all three films were released in 1985) but with less success--mostly due to a slapdash script. The film veers from being The Breakfast Club to WarGames to Rambo, leaping over plot holes all the way. As the hero, John Stockwell is too low-key for his own good, but Danielle Von Zerneck is appealing as his emerging love interest, and Fisher Stevens and Raphael Sbarge do their best to inject some life into the material. Dennis Hopper (as a hippie-dippie science teacher) chews the scenary with gusto--and at one point shows up wearing the costume he wore in Easy Rider. --Geof Miller

My Science Adventure
The story is good and the cast is great. Who would know that Dennis Hopper and John Ratzenberger would add such great comedy. This is one of those sleeper movies like "Adventures in Babysitting" and "The Last Starfighter" that turns out well worth your time.

If you like movies like "Explorers", "Goonies", and "Flight of the Navigator" you should love it. This is a movie that can be enjoyed by the whole family. The sets, music, and directing is excellent. Even the special effects which are a bit dated now are still quite good.

A science project made from a hidden device in a secret military stockpile can lead to some unpredictable results. When the school starts to transform into periods of the Earths history including the dinosaur age, the students must keep on their toes to survive.

I pre-ordered my DVD because I am sure there will be extra features as well. Even if there weren't any this is a great price for couple hours of comedy adventure.

Excellent 80s Nostalgia
As some others have said, "My Science Project" is pure 80s absurdity - but that doesn't make it a bad thing. With surprisingly high production values and a premise that was every misfit's high school dream (as in saving the day, getting the girl, and winning the respect of your peers), it's hard for an 80s-born nerd such as myself NOT to enjoy it. Since I was a kid I've always had a soft spot for this cheesy flick, and it hasn't changed with time. It may be too campy for much of today's audience, but it's jam-packed with that nostalgic 80s flavor and some really fun moments.

Good Clean Fun
I liked this movie when it first came out, I like it now
and my kids who are Star Wars , Lord of the Rings fans,
like it too.
Yes it's geeky and very 80's. But that was the audience, it was made for. Just take that into account because your not going to get Jurrassic Park and Fhantom Menace, special effects in this time frame. If they did this movie now with the effects of today it would knock your socks off. It's just fun escapism.

Point Break
Released in DVD by Twentieth Century Fox Home Video (22 May, 2001)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Kathryn Bigelow
Starring: Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves
An unbelievable movie, and deliriously better for it. Keanu Reeves is a hotshot law enforcement dude--Johnny Utah by name--investigating a series of bank robberies in L.A. Four gunmen, disguised in rubber masks of ex-U.S. presidents, have never come close to being caught, but veteran agent Gary Busey has a theory: The bandits are surfers. This prompts the superb line, "The ex-presidents rip off banks to finance the endless summer!" This movie's full of dialogue like that, but instead of sounding ridiculous it creates its own infectious comic-book energy--ride the crest of it and you'll find the film's giddy zone. Patrick Swayze plays Bodhi, zen-master leader of the surfing clan, humming serenely with the wisdom of the waves. (Alarmingly, Swayze also did his own skydiving stunts.) Director Kathryn Bigelow (Strange Days) stages the action sequences with a visceral snap, and clearly has a gift for orchestrating pulp fiction. Though not a huge hit when was first released, Point Break has a well-deserved cult reputation thanks to its video afterlife. The film's executive producer is James Cameron, Bigelow's husband at the time. --Robert Horton
Average review score:

the movie with the ban robbing presidents
Keanu(Neo) is a undercover cop who investigates a robbery done by people who dress up in ex-president masks and the clues follow to the man he gets close to, a surfing frizzy haired Patrick Swayze. Point Break breaks into good action with some great surfing and a tubular cast man. Neo knows how to surf those waves. the wave at the end is monstrous. for diehard Reeves and Swayze buffs

I was swept into the excitement of the world of surfing.
This 1991 film stars Keanu Reeves as Johnny Utah, an FBI agent trying to solve a series of bank robberies in the Los Angeles area. His partner has a theory that these robberies were committed by surfers. And so our hero goes undercover in the surfing world.

First, of course, he has to learn how to surf. And there just happens to be an attractive female surfer, played by Lori Petty, to teach him. Naturally a romance develops but what is surprising is the remarkably short time it takes him to learn to surf. There's conflict with the other surfers too, but as he was once a football hero, he plays football on the beach with them and wins the respect of Bodhi, played by Patrick Swayzee. Bodhi's into the spiritual side of surfing. And he's also into free fall sky diving, night surfing and the ultimate thrills riding the waves. The two men learn to respect each other. It's too bad that Bodhi is also a bank robber. And that he just happens to be Lori Petty's ex-boyfriend.

What follows is an action packed ride including chases on foot and with cars. There's several false leads and a bit of violence. The story follows a formula, which is to be expected, but yet it is done very well. The best part of the film though is the surfing. It was able to make me feel the thrill of it all while I was sitting comfortably in front of my TV. I'm sure they used a lot of stunt doubles and special effects. But I didn't care. I just let myself be swept into the excitement of it all.

Recommended -- especially for action film buffs.

Very satisfied!!
first of all, this title has a DTS audio format. It maybe attracts you. Because the story is about surfer and surfing.
the sound is very important, i think.
anyway, if you have seen this movie before and like it, you should have this title. the sound and clear screen will make you happy and satisfy.
and you'll see what the "100% adrenalin" is.
