George Carlin on Campus
Released in DVD by Mpi Home Video (28 August, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Directors: Steven J. Santos and Bob Kurtz (II)
The dean of observational humorists in America preaches to a like-minded choir in this lively 1984 college performance by George Carlin. Beginning with a little offstage psychodrama (albeit funny) about the pain of being a class clown in Catholic school, Carlin on Campus soon hits the boards with the former Hippie-Dippie Weatherman's take on Brooklynese pronunciations of the names of sexually transmitted disease ("hoipes"), plus a prayer for the separation of church and state, feuds between breakfast foods, and the absurdity of wearing jungle camouflage in a desert. Carlin's tone and choice of material toughen up as the show goes along: he makes an astute assault on passive-aggressive drivers, lobbies hard for his "world's most obscene cheer," and suggests that people may be ready for "full-contact chess." Much of this stuff is pretty funny, though the program is marred a bit by reliance on some lowbrow, pretaped material that punctuates Carlin's monologue. A contrarian to the end, however, Carlin is going to do what he's going to do, and that's part of his charm. --Tom Keogh

more, feed me more
In my opinion this is some of Carlin's best work. He does three classic monologues including "A Place For My Stuff", "Baseball and Football", and "Cars and Driving". I think a person who loves carlin should have this but one flaw is he throws in strange cartoons at odd moments.

Leaves you hungry for more
My favorite part of this DVD is the bit on Cars and Driving. This one's also got his classic bits on Stuff and Baseball vs. Football, along with some inspired observations on flamethrowers and the Rain Dance. There's also some fun memories about his Grandpa and his famous dog, Tippy. He even offers tips on how to deal with your boss ("Hey, it's MY JOB, I'll do it MY WAY!"). After watching the whole show, I've decided that you can't possibly own just ONE George Carlin concert on Video/DVD. Also, I found that it's even better to actually WATCH the guy perform than to just listen to his act on CD. Carlin's so good with pantomime and facial tics.

Stuff is the best of his work
I want to buy only the gig entitled "Stuff" Can I get this without purchasing an entire album??

Dead Man on Campus
Released in DVD by Paramount Studio (24 June, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Alan Cohn
Starring: Tom Everett Scott and Mark-Paul Gosselaar
Well, it's a good idea. Dead Man on Campus had the potential to be a classic dark comedy: Two students at a prestigious university are flunking out; however, due to a provision in the school's charter, if they had a roommate who committed suicide, they'd both get straight A's as a form of reparation for grief and trauma. So, to stay in school, they seek out the most depressed student on campus and transfer him into their three-person dorm room. Unfortunately, rather than satirizing the real issues--academic narrow-mindedness, parental pressure, the obsessiveness of late adolescence--the movie is a compilation of frat-boy clichés and jokes that want to be in bad taste but are actually quite tame. The leads (Tom Everett Scott and Mark-Paul Gosselaar) are pleasant and the soundtrack (produced by the Dust Brothers) has some very hip selections, but after a snappy opening-credit sequence, the movie stumbles along, aimless and sluggish. Alyson Hannigan (American Pie, Willow on TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer) has a small role and is her charming geeky self. --Bret Fetzer

I love college
not a three star movie but a 2 in a half star movie. this one pits Tom Evertt Scott(American Werewolf In Paris) as Josh in a college and he meets his new roomate Cooper played by Mark Paul Gosselaar(Saved By The Bell, NYPD Blue). they learn that if any of your roomates dies then they get straight A's and they try to move in a few roomates so they can push them over the edge and kill them but things go a little wonky. also in the mix is Lochlyn Munro(Dracula 2000), Poppy Montgomery(tv's Without A Trace) and Alyson Hannigan(Willow on Buffy The Vampire Slayer). some good moments include the scene where they meet Munro and he starts humping things, also the sperm song sung by Corey Page, is hilarious.

I've got some beer lets drink them
this movie is so darn funny. the story of a pothead and his straight lace roomate who have to resort to drastic measures to stay in school is a story almsot all college students can relate to. Just worry if your roomate is like mine and never went to a single class and belives this movie is true and tells you he is going to make straight A's man my roomate was retarted but you got to love cowboy bob

"Quick man... kick me in the junk"
I never heard of this movie before my friend introduced me to it. I thought, "The dude from Saved by the Bell? How lame is this going to be!"

Au contraire! This has to be the best movie MTV films ever put out. While the idea is somewhat funny in itself (passing college by finding a suicidal roommate, guaranteeing yourself A's from the trauma regardless of your failing grades), it's the characters that make this movie. Cliff, the drooling party-animal frat boy who is so high he sets a chick's hair on fire trying to lite a bong... Buckley, the egocentric computer geek who believes Bill Gates wants him for his brain and will sacrifice himself to prevent an apocolypse... and let's not forget Matt, the depressive British muscian who wears everything he brought to college and might not make it long enough to play the pre-finals party. Even the locals at the bar are great. "Some people eat bugs!"

Believe me, if you liked Happy Gilmore, Tommy Boy or anything of that genre, you will love this movie. It's got tons of hilarious quotes you and your friends will be saying again and again.

I leave you with one more... "Cooper, I'm really serious when I say I need to study! And Josh, I'm really serious when I say I need to clean my bong."

The Mack - New Line Platinum Series
Released in DVD by Warner Home Video (03 September, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Michael Campus
Starring: Max Julien, Don Gordon, and Richard Pryor
The Mack, a 1973 pimping epic, is at once a laughable, schlock classic and a harbinger of more serious black-themed films to come. Starring the now-forgotten Max Julien as Goldie, the preening ex-con whose dream is to rule the streets with a fine Cadillac and a fleet of topnotch hookers, this film is full of whip-crack, mostly improvised dialogue and hilarious stereotypes (the evil white cops, a wisdom-spouting blind man, and more trash-talkin' pimps than you could shake a walking stick at).

Not only is the film one you can chuckle at in the postmodern, ironic mode, it is also a window on the world of today's rap superstars, many of whom have sampled, invoked, or quoted lines from this gaudy paean to pandering. In other words, The Mack is a kind of godfather to a future stark frankness about life on the streets. But forget the sociological hooey and dig into the piece as an urban costume picture with a greasy/funky score by R&B genius Willie Hutch.

Also, it features an amazing supporting turn by Richard Pryor, who, playing Tonto to Julien's Lone Ranger, unleashes torrents of nearly incomprehensible verbiage in the film's finest moments. Mind you, such brilliance is a direct comedy-organ transplant from Pryor's stand-up act: he was performing his "Pimp on Blow" routine at about the same time The Mack was filmed. Seventy percent of this piece is dross, but the other 30 is the apex of urban surrealism. One vignette to tantalize: Goldie hypnotizing his "ladies" into docile submission as they sit in a planetarium, mechanically repeating his words: "I will remain a lady at all times..." --David Was

Campus Comedy Classics
Released in DVD by Universal Studios (21 December, 1999)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Starring: Campus Comedy Classics
Before he became an overrated filmmaker, Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire) was a reporter for Rolling Stone who was so youthful looking that he could go undercover for a year at a California high school and write a book about it. He wrote the script for this film, based on that book, and it launched the careers of several young actors, including Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates, and, above all, Sean Penn. The story line is episodic, dealing with the lives of iconic teen types: one of the school's cool kids, a nerd, a teen queen, and, most enjoyably, the class stoner (Penn), who finds himself at odds with a strict history teacher (a wonderfully spiky Ray Walston). This is not a great movie but very entertaining and, for a certain age group, a seminal movie experience. --Marshall Fine
Average review score:

Fast Times and Social Warnings
Wrapped in a package of 80s marijuana schtick and sexy teenage actresses, is a serious message in this film. Jennifer Jason Leigh's character goes through some serious life-altering things in this film. She learns some hard lessons and we feel for her as she does them. But, that is easily lost while you focus on Spiccoli and his antics, or Jennifer's brother and his struggles.

At the heart of the movie is a warm cautionary tale marketed wisely as a sexy romp.

Still Missing Some Great Things
The movie is a classic and you should get it anyway, I just wish they would of added some extra scenes. I'm just confused because there really are 3 versions of this film, the vhs, the dvd and the edited for tv version. I've noticed that they've changed the music around from the vhs to the dvd as well, other than that it's a great movie and a great buy

Spicoli man
Sean Penn is the standout in this classic involving teens and their troubles and fanstasys. Ray Walston is great as the teacher who babbles on to Penn about life. great cast include, Judge Reinhold, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Nicolas Cage(Nicolas Coppola), Forest Whitaker, Phoebe Cates, Anthony Edwards, Eric Stoltz and other great people. favorite scene is when Penn orders a pizza to the classroom and dont forget that famous scene with Phoebe Cates and the red bikini

The Education of Sonny Carson
Released in DVD by Vci/Ffi (22 October, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Michael Campus
Average review score:

Great Movie, horrible reproduction
There is something wrong with this DVD at chapter 5 where Sonny takes a hit of weed from 2 pimps at first I thought the echos I was hearing was part of the scene but as soon as the scene continued into the high school scene with his confrontation with the hawks the echoing continued. It ends as soon as chapter 6 starts up with the 1st gang battle between the lords and the hawks. I decided to check the old tape I had of TEO Sonny Carson and the guess what, the echos were not present anywhere in the movie. That means somwhere between the master print and the DVD master somebody forgot to check for audio sync in the transfer. To top it all off all throughout the movie there is video noise on moving edges; I though only amateur/hobbyist of VCD/SVCD/DVD did this. This is a great movie about the tough times that young black Sonny Carson faced in Brooklyn and rose up from. But the production that went into this DVD practically destroys any enjoyable experience one can get from this movie. So my suggestion is to wait for a re-release (not likely) or buy the tape; then you yourself can make a better DVD version of the movie than the guy jonfilms@aol.com did. (jonfilms@aol.com is in the credits for digitizing this movies and I think he is responsible for the error in transfer from master to DVD print). Great movie gone to waste because of carelessnes in the video transposing process.

Average movie... poor quality audio!
I must admit that I was disappointed with this film. It suffers from some common mistakes made in many blaxploitation films of this time. I feel that given the man's life, the same budget and actors, I could come up with a better film. Why...?

I never saw this movie before I purchased it. I was expecting something like Cooley High. I did not, and still, do not know much about Sonny Carson. The film ends right at the turning point of his life!

If you sat down in the theater in 1973/4 and watched this film, knowing nothing about him, after the film you would have walked out wondering why they made this film at all.

He gets out of prison and finds that all of his friends have either been killed, succumbed to drug addiction, or are incarcerated. The movie ends here.

We see nothing of the positive changes that he made. We don't know why he joined a gain in the first place. What motivated him? His parents seemed loving and he supposedly got good grades in school. It didn't appear that everyone in his school was in a gang either. Another enigma is his girlfriend, who appears to be clean-cut when we first meet her. When he gets out of jail, she's strung out on heroine. How did this happen? No explanations given in this film.

Instead the movie wastes valuable time showing long scenes of people dancing and other scenes of people singing gospel. This appears often in blaxploitation films... why? I don't like watching people dance and sing, it wastes time, and hurts the flow of the movie. If there was some purpose for the gospel singing i.e. Sonny had an apparent interest in church, that would be ok... but he didn't. And have you ever seen a parade where they allow street gangs to march in them?!?!?! Well you'll see it here!

As for the DVD: the video quality is good but the sound is a real joke! As noted by an earlier review. The synchronization is off by a fraction of a second and it is quite noticable. Think of a bad dubbing on a low budget kung-fu movie.

Buy this only if you are a die-hard collector of blaxploitation films, like me... otherwise steer clear of this one!

Very Moving Film
I finally got to see this Film recently&couldn't stop feeling the depth&Realness of the film.this Film is straight up in your face&doesn't hide from what went down back in the day.it touches on so many levels.Films like this truly Kept it real&also are a front runner to much of what we see&hear today.

Campus Man
Released in DVD by Paramount Home Video (09 September, 2003)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Ron Casden
Starring: John Dye, Steve Lyon, and Morgan Fairchild
Average review score:

A Nice Story, Well Acted with a Good Feel
This is one of those movies that really can't be catagorized by Comedy/Drama/Suspense..etc. 'Campus Man' is a low-budget story produced in the times of Good-Natured movies directed at teenaged audiences (A dying breed of film by now). The movie features 'Touched By and Angel's' John Dye, Morgan Fairchild and a young model named Steve Lyon who appears in this..one of his only two movies. A young entrepreneur-to-be (John Dye) spends his last year at Arizona State University struggling to come up with the perfect marketing idea that will secure his future. He invests his new idea of a 'male calender for women' in his long-time friend and classmate (Steve Lyon), a handsome and promissing young diver for the school. When a tough buisness shark (Morgan Fairchild) and an outlaw loan officer put weight on his shoulders, he is forced to mend the damage to his friendship with Brett choose between a great deal of money and getting Brett's diving scholorship back. It's an 'Alex P. Keaton' type story which was popular in the 80s', very well done by all four lead actors with comedy and mild drama that makes it a nice summer vacation movie. It falls into the same catagory as 'Summer School', 'The Allnighter', and 'One Crazy Summer' and it's worth a try if you're a fan of 'beach-comedy' type stories from the 80s'.

Cinematic Classic!
My girlfriend originally wanted to rent James Cameron's Titanic, but instead I argued for one of Ron Casden's more controversial works. Boy are we glad we decided on this. For the girls, this movie has John Dye, and for the gents, need I say more than Kathleen Willhoite? This uproarious comedy has you in stitches while still tugging at your heart-strings with its many twists and turns. Morgan Fairchild also makes a guest appearance as the editor of a magazine, now that's star power!!! This movie makes you feel great, case in point the now infamous high five scene at the end ; ). Side note for you movie buffs, Bob G. Anthony turns in an early stellar performance as the loan officer. Breath taking. If you're looking for an hilarious comedy that really makes you think and keeps you on your toes the whole way through...DROP EVERYTHING!!! and BUY this movie today!!

Good College Movie
The movie is a comedy/Thriller non horror movie, When i say non horror thriller, another words you wonder what is going to happen next. The movie is about a college student who needs to come up with $10,000 in 30 days for tution or he will be thrown out of college. He comes up with an idea to make a Sports pin up calander with college boys on it. He borrows $12,000 from a loan shark to start his project but with a %30 interest rate. He has to come up with $25,600 in 30 days OR ELSE.

Big Shot - Confessions of a Campus Bookie
Released in DVD by Fox Home Entertainme (03 June, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Ernest R. Dickerson
Based on actual events, Big Shot: Confessions of a Campus Bookie plays like a frat-house blend of Casino and Goodfellas. Originally broadcast on FX, it's got the sanitized veneer of a TV movie, but it's an honest, R-rated appraisal of Bennie Silman, a Brooklyn-born student at Arizona State University who reaped--and lost--a fortune in 1994 by fixing basketball games with the help of star player Stevin "Hedake" Smith. Perfectly cast as Silman, the always-interesting David Krumholtz ("Bernard" from the Santa Clause movies) speaks to the camera, inviting us into his first-person account of money, girls, and the Mafia. It's a party animal's fantasy until the bloody-nosed climax, directed with edgy energy, but not enough substance, by Ernest R. Dickerson (who fared marginally better with his Showtime film Our America). Krumholtz and Tory Kittles (as Smith) make this a compelling enterprise, however, and the real Bennie Silman appears in a coda that roots the movie in harsh, cautionary reality. --Jeff Shannon

edited subsequent to price drop; still 4 stars
originally i said this was a very good movie to buy if you could stomach the then-high price, which i could. i went to ASU around the time the hedake smith story was reaching full media realization. this is an interesting take on the whole mess.

the DVD's best extra, of the real benny silman explaining what happened, is a raw take on the situation from a guy who genuinely seems to understand he did wrong. (note that, as best i could tell, no footage was added or subtracted from the TV version of the actual movie, in case you hoped to see callie nude or witness benny brutally unloading a machine gun on big red and his posse.)

flaws: the video transfer, though generally glossy and praiseworthy, is a little messy in a couple spots (most noticeably when benny is selling suits). and the spanish subtitles consistently refer to ASU as the university of arizona - an obvious sore spot for any ASU alum!

anyway, i watched it twice the first day i bought it, and this was a movie i'd already seen once on TV.

highly recommended. thanks for releasing this, FX.

Penthouse: On Campus
Released in DVD by Image Entertainment (22 February, 2000)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Average review score:

Be warned of that '1980s' look.
Be warned. This video has its drawbacks - particularly the dated, puffy-haired appearance of many of the models. Sure, there are several sexy skits worthy of a glance: A blonde student stripteases in a campus courtyard; a sizzling girl-girl scene in the dean's office. But disappointing chapters far outnumber the handful of quality ones. I'd say skip it.

Hot College Chicks! - Get NAKED !
Why not get this video? Who cares about the video quality or sound or whatever. These girls get naked man, and they are hot too, and they are in college, or so "The Man" would like for us to believe that they are in college, I never saw any chicks like this in college and I've been here for 9 years man. So, if your a fan of naked chicks and stuff then get this thing. I rock...

Girls Gone Wild: On Campus
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (03 September, 2002)
MPAA Rating:
Average review score:

Disappointed
The adds for this title are misleading. There are extremely few good moments in this dvd, and those are not that good. If it was $$$, I'd say you got what you paid for. And I've noticed they reuse footage in other titles in this series. I was very disappointed.

2.5 stars, or 5 out of 10...
I don't know how the other girls gone wild movies are, but this Girls Gone Wild ON CAMPUS isn't all that good. It has a FEW good shots of girls showing up or taking off their skirts and showing good shots. But mostly this is basicly different girls flashing the camara for like 5 seconds. I'd say this is just for something to watch at a bachelor/frat type of party where its just you and your boys watching while rating girls. I'd say RENT THIS if you can.

The Best GGW Video Yet
I own most of the GGW videos, and I have to say that this is hands-down their best work. There is everything you'd expect - cute (mostly) college-aged girls taking it off for beads or a GGW tank-top, but the guys behind the camera are more experienced in cutting the "deals" than ever before. They often get the girls to show for longer, and do it over and over, claiming everything from, they weren't ready, or their hands were in the way, etc. Plenty of stuff inside clubs, in the bathrooms of clubs, and out on the street. Just enough talking to the girls before and after they flash, fleshing them out as "real girls." (All the really showy ones had southern accents, which is interesting!) But the best part about this video is just how often they get girls to "show it all." There are several segments where the camera lens ventures up a dress or a skirt, or just plain gets girls to drop it all in front of groups of guys! I get the feeling that the GGW crew takes their best stuff and puts it together and makes the rest of the videos with the remaining footage. However, don't be fooled by the title. Most of the footage was shot on what seemed like Spring Breaks throughout Florida, not on college campuses. There is one scene near the end of the video, previewed on the box art and on the commerical, that features the Hottie of all hotties on a swing. It is not to be missed! Get this title now!

Boring
Seen one flashing you've seen them all. Not worth your time or money.

ON CAMPUS 2
Well, this is another example of the late GGW videos. Only topless flashing is featured in this DVD. Nothing breaks the monotony of the breasts. Is not worth buying. What happenned to the winning formula of the first GGW DVDs?

Going Going Gone Wild
The intrepid manner in which this documentarian formulates his ouvre in this, the latest episode of a genre which he can call his own, is impressive. Still, the bit with the horse shoes was, in my view, uncalled for. How do they defy gravity, anyway?
