Deep Tissue Massage and Myofascial Release: A Video Guide to Techniques
Released in DVD by Audio Video Consultants (15 June, 2003)
MPAA Rating:
Average review score:

Wonderful intruction set!!
I am a licensed massage therapist and I purchased Art Rigg's "Deep Tissue Massage" manual about a year ago and loved it, but really needed to see what was being explained in the book. I had very high hopes for the DVD's and was not disappointed, rather the opposite, they exceed my expectations. Mr. Rigg's is an enjoyable instructure to watch, as well as extremely skilled and knowledgeable. It is apparent his goal is to help massage therapists become well-informed and successful practitioners. Cultivating touch, anatomy review, biomechanics, and working with injuries - together with hours of excellent demonstrations of applied techniques, you can't go wrong with this set. These videos move at a very comfortable pace, each building upon the next. The DVD format is ideal for easy reference. I couldn't be happier with my purchase and highly recommend this set to recent graduates of massage therapy programs as well as long-time practicing massage therapists.

Like having private instruction at your fingertips
Art Riggs' Deep Tissue Massage manual is of the highest quality. But it pales in comparison to his videos. Being able to watch Art doing bodywork "live" is like being in his classroom, only you never have to leave. The expert instruction and demonstration of his techniques is of the highest quality. Art is extremely enjoyable to watch and listen to as he generously shares his years of experience and obvious advanced knowledge of the body. The camera angles and close-ups make it very easy to see even subtle moves. The DVD format allows you to find just the specific part of the body you wish to review using the numbered manual that is included. I highly recommend these videos to those new in the business as well as those with advanced knowledge of deep tissue massage. My clients especially appreciate the new techniques I have incorporated into their massages, and they eagerly await me learning more as I continue to view these videos.

Like having private instruction in your own studio
I am a certified massage practitioner for Swedish/Esalen Massage. But I have always been interested in deep tissue massage. I first purchased Art Riggs' Deep Tissue Massage manual, and was thoroughly enthralled with it's excellence. So I eagerly awaited his release of the videos. For certain, the book pales in comparison to the videos. For half the amount of money I would have spent on an advanced deep tissue class, I now have his videos that I can watch innumerable times. Seeing Art doing the bodywork "live"is like having a never-ending massage course that I can attend over and over, in the convenience of my own studio. Art Riggs' instruction and demonstration is of the highest quality. He is extremely enjoyable to watch and listen to. The close-up camera shots make it very easy to see even subtle moves. I highly recommend these videos for those like myself who are new to the massage business, all the way up to those who have been in the business for decades like Art. I have received totally enthusiastic responses from my clients for the moves I have been putting into practice. Although I do not own a DVD player, these videos are also available in that format, which makes it very easy to follow the manual that is included to find exactly the part of the body you wish to view.

Sex Without Bodies (Audio Only)
Released in DVD by Chesky Jazz (11 March, 1999)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Dave's True Story
Average review score:

Reviewer idiocy
The "flowerboy" must have been smoking quite a bit of a certain type of herbal substance.

"Sex without bodies" is not a movie ... it is an audio only recording -- using the DVD video format. As the Amazon documentation notes it is a PCM 2 channel deal, not the 5.1 which "flowerboy" asserts.

I wonder if the "boy" was out there with the Protocols reviews.

A great representation of an old classic porn!!
Surround sound adds to the sensuous effect of perfect love making. The deep rumble of multiple explosions shakes the whole room. The Soundtrack cums alive in Dolby 5.1 channel sound. Can't wait for the sequel!!!

Hobo (Audio Only)
Released in DVD by Chesky Jazz (11 March, 1999)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Sara K.
Average review score:

stunning 96/24 Audio DVD
This version of Hobo by Sara K. is actually a 96 kHz, 24-bit DVD that essentially has no video, just high-resolution audio. (Note to editors: it probably belongs in the music section of the store!) It can be played on any DVD-Video player but will give best results on ones that have internal 96x24 DACs, or for optimal results 96x24 on digital outputs. With a player like the Pioneer DV-414 the digital outputs can be connected to an external D/A converter like the Assemblage DAC-3 or other types for phenomenal results.

Even without the external converter, the high resolution of 96 x 24 is like nothing you've ever heard before. It blows away CD on depth, width, timbre, reverberation and sense of space, and because of all of this, the emotional impact and involvement in the music.

The tunes here are beautifully arranged and performed. They're sexy jazz and pop pieces played with minimal instrumentation, a perfect beat, top-notch playing, and outstanding recording engineering. The music is at the same time engagingly fun and incredibly cleanly recorded. The topic of most of the songs is sex, but in a way that's intelligently stimulating, rather than bludgeoning as in mainstream rock.

I'm new to Jazz, but get a feeling I'm listening to some of the best of it in these Chesky DVDs.

Cowboy Junkies - Open Road (Includes Audio CD)

MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)

The reality and what it could sound like
I noticed in the 3 reviews for this DVD none noted THE one flaw. The disc is not encoded in 5.1digital surround sound. If you don't know what this means don't worry about it. That's the only flaw, everything else is perfect and Amazon.com should do more to say "is in 5.1 surround" or "is not in 5.1 surround sound" That's my bone I'm picking, thanks for reading.

Fantastic
I would like to add to the other reviews that while allof this is great, the highlight which stands out for me is the chance to see the River Trilogy performed all together in sequence. A truly chilling experience as the romance/life goes from its early heights to its final depths. Having seen the Junkies live I can confirm that they are even better live than on record - this DVD isn't quite like being there, but it is the second best thing.

Just what you would expect
Just what you would expect, great live footage of the band, good interviews, glimpses behind the scenes with the band. If you love the band you'll love the DVD. The bonus CD is very good, but not great. If you're new to the band start with the Lay It Down CD or The Trinity Sessions. After you fall in love with them, come back and buy the DVD (and the rest of their CD's).

Rascal Flatts Live (DVD & Audio CD)
Released in DVD by Universal Music & VI (16 September, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
A paradox: The multi-platinum wonderboys of Rascal Flatts catch up with meteoric chart success on Rascal Flatts Live while nudging beyond limits imposed by it. Sudden success can be constraining, and the Daytona Beach-based Live finds guitarist Joe Don Rooney and cousins Jay DeMarcus and Gary Levox--the band's multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, respectively--occasionally (okay, very occasionally) indulging musical passions beyond the slick-and-safe country pop and frothy love-anthems that have endeared them (as a supporting act) to Alan Jackson and Toby Keith's audiences. Among other things, the trio sounds fit to burst with gospel, as suggested by DeMarcus's cameo role as vocalist on a cover of "Lean on Me." (Um, do these guys know he's a better singer than Levox?) There's even a detectable groove on "Prayin' for Daylight," and the group's blowout encore, a cover of Boston's "Long Time," suggests a healthy restlessness within Rascal Flatts' ranks. --Tom Keogh

If you own their other CDs, don't bother with this
Let me first say, I am a HUGE Rascal Flatts fan! Now, with that out of the way, this CD/DVD set is a great purchase for someone who doesn't own the other two CDs and/or hasn't seen the concert specials on TV, but if the aforementioned don't apply to you, don't spend the money... save it to buy their concert tickets next time they are through your town. There are only five songs on the CD, most of which are available on their previous CDs. Although their version of "Lean on Me" is beautiful, it's really not worth spending the money for one new song. Can't wait for the next new CD to come out...

Lots of talent, lots of fun, and lots of energy.
I want to say that I did not expect much from this DVD.I am only an occasional country fan, and dabble in other music genres much more often.I played this and watched for the very first time while on my treadmill at home.It is very entertaining, high-energy, and very light. What strikes the viewer immediately is how much the audience affects Rascal Flatts as performers. The louder the applause, the more enenegy Rascal Flatts infuses into the performance. Rascal Flatts is clearly having a great time on stage in Daytona, and the crowd sees this and encourages them. What can I say? It becomes a fun-fest, and I highly recommend it for light viewing. It stays in my DVD player near my treadmill, and I can honestly say that if they can successfully entertain this mostly college-age crowd in Daytona Beach, Florida during spring break, they will certainly entertain you.Sit back and relax.Enjoy the beach and bring your suntan lotion.

AWESOME
Rascal Flatts fans won't be disappointed. It's nice to be able to get a glimpse of their life on the road and the people they get to travel with. Also if you haven't had the opportunity to see them live this gives you an idea of how powerful and exiting their shows are. I would highly recommend buying this for those of us who enjoy their music.

Baby Superstar - Explorer (with Audio CD)
Released in DVD by Image Entertainment (15 April, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Created in consultation with child development and infant-learning experts, Baby Superstar: Explorer blends classical music, animation, and live-action photography in an appealing program that facilitates sensory, language, emotional, and cognitive development in children ages 3 to 36 months. Explorer focuses on land, sea, and space; juxtaposing footage of stuffed animals, toys in action, animation, live animals in natural settings, authentic space shuttle launches, and real space photography. Rich classical music like Handel's Water Music and Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, accompanies the visual images. Baby Superstar presentations are similar to Baby Einstein programs in that both combine animation, toys, and classical music. What makes Baby Superstar different, and infinitely more appealing to adult viewers, is the real-life photography and the use of full orchestral renditions of the classical music rather than the synthesized, heavily stylized arrangements presented by Baby Einstein. The DVD includes an audio compact disc of the musical selections as well as a parent guide that features video of psychologist Joyce Brothers and pediatrician David Namerow offering advice on topics like stimulating brain development, separation anxiety, and common physical ailments in infants. Twenty percent of Baby Superstar's profits will be donated to children's charities. --Tami Horiuchi

My baby loves it
My baby loves it. Just seeing him focused on the TV with his big blue eyes is a beautiful sight. The Dvd works like a babysitter when we need 30 minutes alone and get stuff done around the house. Every parent knows how important that 30 minute break is and this Dvd definitely gives us that.

well thought out
I think the space exploration piece towards the end of the dvd is a really smart way to get a childs young mind to begin growing and learning at such a young age. The video covers the different animals on land, in the water, in the air, and then finishes with the solar system and space exploration. The explorer dvd is very well thought out, and I would refer any parent to the explorer video and the other baby superstar videos if they're looking for something fun and educational for a young one.

What would we do without it?
My son is absolutely in love with this video. My brother brought over his baby, both him and my son could not stop watching it. It's amazing!

The Super Audio Collection & Professional Test Disc
Released in DVD by Chesky Jazz (09 June, 1998)
MPAA Rating:
Average review score:

Great intro to 24/96 audio. Too much music, not enough test.
If you want to get your feet wet in 24/96 audio, overall, this isn't a bad way to go. The tests included are pretty much the usual lot (1k 0dB, L/R ID, FR, Sweeps, etc.). The nice thing is the tests are given in two sets. The first set is all at 48kHz, the second set is at 96kHz. There is a little variety in bit depth.

A word about the warnings on the disc. In a couple of places, you are warned about turning your speakers off before going on to the test tones. I couldn't understand why, so I gave Chesky a call. I don't remember the name of the person I spoke to (she was, I think, their main engineer). You don't have to exercise any more caution than you would using any other test disc. Test tones are very clean recordings (usually), and because of the dynamics involved, you want volume settings very low. For those of you with meters on your amps, output readings should be around 1/10 of a Watt. For those of you without meters, turn the volume down to zero, then bring it up while the test is playing.

For the novice, something recorded at 0dB FS is brutally loud when compared to everything else. Use extreme caution when using any test tone CD.

At the risk of calling down the wrath of Cheskians (Cheskites? I don't know the proper term for Chesky worshipers), I think there is a significant shortcoming on this disc: too much music.

There is about an hour of music on the disc that serves (partially) as a test bed. My personal preference would have been for less music and more tests tones, including more spot frequencies and disc error correction tests.

The sonic impact of the music and the new technology behind it could have just as effectively been relayed using three of the nine music tracks included. I understand part of this disc's intended function is to serve as advertising for acts on the label. That might not be so bad, except the disc runs full price.

Delivering short where it counts (for me, test tone content), and going long where it hurts (price) is why I'm giving three out of five stars.

Great Intro into 96/24 (No 'But')
I already own several test CDs, so when I bought this DVD I was looking for a wide introduction to DVD's 96/24 format to compare with CD's 44/16 format. For me, this is a perfect mix. It starts with almost a CD's worth of music, most of it with a startling dynamic range and clarity, and a pitch black background, as well as a large enough selection of test tones and the likes for me to get a great view of what this format can do. I ended up loving more than half the musical selections enough to buy the DVDs of them. A few I merely liked and two just wasn't my cup of tea.

I guess, I wanted to know what music was available using DVD's higher resolution and if it were worth the higher price. If I hadn't bought this DVD and listened to it for a year, I would have had no other way to find out about the various music available using DVD's higher resolution without buying them all.

In short, I bought this DVD to answer the questions, "Does a variety of music recorded on DVD's 96/24 format sound better than what I'm generally used to from CD," (my answer: YES, much better.) "What, of the music available in this format, are recordings I'd like to own?" (My answer: more than half.)

It seems to me that this format makes it easier to produce a spectacular musical recording--almost all the musical selections on this demo DVD were as good as the best CD recordings I'd heard from Eargle. The best John Eargle recordings match this in quality of recording, but few others. The musical selection ranges from pop, jazz, and classical to Celtic, African, and Caribbean.

So if you're looking for a stereo demo DVD to give you an across the board look at what DVD's higher audio resolution sounds like, using selections from available DVDs, then buy this one. If you're looking for a complete collection of test tones on DVD, maybe there's a better one out there, I don't know.

Video Essentials: Optimizing Your Audio/Video System
Released in DVD by Dvd International (21 July, 1998)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Joseph J. Kane Jr.
Starring: Sam Dalton
Average review score:

Poor layout, difficult navigation, poor explanations.
First of all, like most DVD's you are not able to simply navigate this DVD with the Title and Chapter Menu buttons. No, the author decided in his infinite wisdom to make navigation a chore by accessing a "Program Menu" which only after significant effort I was able to finally figure out how to get to point A to point B and even then it required cumbersome navigation and took far too long. It was really an aggravation and frustrating since my principle concern was not learning how to navigate the damn DVD but learning how to calibrate my system.

After wasting far far too much time figuring out how to navigate through the DVD I then undertook to calibrate my system. The author's introductory chapters are interesting and informative, BUT he fails to follow up on the initial promise of the DVD by leaving you without adequate instructions on how to use the test tones and video tools.

For instance, he has half right speaker tones, but never explains what in the heck they are for. After a brief and disappointing intro to both audio and video he simply throws the test tones at you. Why didn't he have a thorough step by step explanation of exactly how to use them.

The other problem is that he uses terms he does not completely explain or define leaving this user confused and scratching his head.

If you are an expert and know what you are doing then this DVD might be more useful than it was to me.

Hopefully, I'll eventually figure out how to use the darn thing.

Summary impression: EXTREMELY cumbersome navigation! Poor incomplete explanations of vital information. My next step: Try Avia with hopefully better luck!

BUY THIS THING!
Made all the difference for our 65" wide-screen Mitsubishi TV. We had a tech come out and try to improve our picture, and he accomplished nothing. This DVD made things fantastic in no time at all!

Excellent and well worth the money
I have had this DVD for years. It was tought to buy it at first since $25 seemed like a lot for something I would only use once. And I figured I would just use it to tune my audio, who worries about their TV anyways? Well, I used it for both and it made a big difference. Since then I have used it on other TVs and all of them have been improved.

But something recently just amazed me. The text menus on my DVD player started looking funny and were hard to read. I really thought something was wrong with my DVD player or maybe the component video cables. Well, finally I put this disc back in and re-tuned my TV and it looks perfect, once again. I guess my settings were messed up at some point...

Baby Superstar - Farmer (with Audio CD)

MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)

One of my son's favorites!
This video is one of my 6-month old son's favorites. It shows real farm animals and plenty of tractors! He loves it all and I think it will be a favorite for a while. We had a 4-year old and 2-year old over one day and they loved it too. I think it makes a nice addition to the Einstein series.

who needs a title? this video is good
My 5 month old daughter is watching the Farmer DVD right now as I am writing this. We ordered the video 2 months ago and I don't think a day has passed when she hasn't watched it. Also, the audio CD that comes with the DVD is great for playing in the car.

This is a good review
I like this video a lot and I would suggest any parent looking for a good educational video for their child to get this one. The soundtrack that goes along is also very good and in tune with what is on the screen. They also make good gifts.

Baby Superstar - Forest Ranger (with Audio CD)
Released in DVD by Image Entertainment (15 April, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Mother bear and cubs lope along stream banks, otters wrestle, and elk (gently) vie for dominance in the striking footage that anchors this program designed to attract and educate babies. Similar in content and execution to the Baby Einstein series, Baby Superstar combines images of real life intercut with toy replicas. Viewers see a stuffed squirrel and then a litter of baby squirrels so new their eyes have yet to open. They watch a wind-up duck, footage of a mama duck and her parade of ducklings floating down stream, and then puzzle pieces put together to form images of ducks. Much of the footage is shot in U.S. National Parks; end credits thank the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, among others. Stirring classical music is the only audio. The wildlife footage is high quality enough to interest older animal lovers, but Forest Ranger is primarily for infants through toddlers. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Forest Ranger Review
My 7 1/2 month old daughter and I enjoyed the Forest Ranger Dvd very much. She was able to sit through the whole thing without any fussing or crying, which is a big plus in my book. As far as the video itself, I thought the different animals being shown along with their toy version makes the child think and begin making associations. The classical music soundtrack helps my daughter to relax and makes watching the video even more enjoyable.

5 Stars
I would just like to say my baby had her eyes glued to the TV screen watching the Forest Ranger DVD. She loves the different animals in the forest and I like the fact that she enjoys the video so much. I have recommended this video to all my friends with an age appropriate child and I give it 5 stars.

Good enough for me
Being a mother who is very concerned about what I buy for my child, I tend to be very critical of products on the market. I was always a little skeptical about educational videos for toddlers but when I got the Forest Ranger Dvd as a gift I was very pleased with my baby's reaction to it. He was very focused and interested in what was on the screen. I give the video a high rating because if my child agrees then it must be something good.
