Wanted Dead or Alive
Released in DVD by Anchor Bay Entertainment (03 December, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Gary Sherman
Starring: Rutger Hauer and Gene Simmons
Average review score:

A Fast-Paced Thriller
Rutger Hauer stars as Nick Randall, a former CIA man turned bounty hunter. He's a steely nerved, icy professional who rounds up the scum of society for very high prices. But now, Randall finds himself as bait in a tug of war between the CIA, FBI, and LAPD. Once the hunter, Randall has become the target of international terrorist Malak Al Rahim, played by Gene Simmons of the rock group KISS. What once was a job for Randall has become a mission; get Al Rahim at all costs!

The action in this movie is well done. Simmons does an excellent job as Al Rahim, and the pace is fast. The special effects are dazzling, and Rutger Hauer has some good one-liners along the way. If you're a fan of good action and shoot 'em up movies, then this movie should be included.

What about the bonus Rutger?
Bounty hunter Nick Randall (Rutger) is alleged great-grand son of famous TV bounty hunter Josh Randall (played successfully
by Steve McQueen back in the 50's). Rutger may not be a
psycho (The Hitcher-'86), a space con (Blade runner-'82) or
a blind white Samurai (Blind Fury-'90) but no problemo!
Gene (I was the masked bass player of KISS) Simmons takes
over. After the absurd hermaphrodite creature he featured in a John Stamos movie (Never too young to die-'86), this is
trully brilliant casting (though not very politically correct,
I mean him being a Jew and meanwhile portaying an Arab
terrorist in this movie). If you're a fan of action movies you have already seen this one. If you're not, hey, let me tell
you this: The end scene with the grenade stuffed in Gene's
mouth is one of World Cinema's all time classic scenes and it
makes this movie a must-see just to hear Rutger say his
famous BONUS line.....!

Double Hauer Power
Rutger Hauer is great in both of these movies. In Deadlock, he plays a diamond thief who gets betrayed by his fiance, which lands him in a prison where the prisoners are the guards. Prisoners wear an exploding necklace that is linked to another prisoner. Go outside the 100 yard limit and BOOM!!
In Wanted Dead Or Alive, Rutger Hauer plays a bounty hunter who is seeking a terrorist played by Gene Simmons of KISS.
Wanted Dead Or Alive is a fast action filled movie with a lot of surprises.

FUN DVD's and the Power Of Cheese
OH THE POWER OF CHEESE!

I love schlock! I can't help it, I just do. I have several of these Killer Creature Double Features and I think that they are great. The whole drive-in motif and the cartoon intermissions are really fabulous.

The Killer Shrews is a good way to see James Best (remember Roscoe P. Coltraine from the Dukes Of Hazzard?) Well, this is Roscoe, only MUCH younger. The Shrews (poor dogs dressed up with fangs and long hair) are a stitch.

I Bury The Living is a surprisingly good movie and not as schlocky as The Killer Shrews.

I like watching films of this nature and these DVD's are a steal! Yes, the quality isn't there, but who..[cares]! The lines and poor sound actually ADD to the whole experience. For those of you who are HARD CORE DVD lovers, this is bad news for you . But I think that the [bad] quality is great. It's like listening to an old LP on a turntable...

To view all of the Killer Creature Double Features, just do a search under : MADACY

They are the distributor of these gems....Keep em' coming Madacy!

Great low budget turkey - lots of laughs!
"Wa(t)ch ou(t) for the killer shoes!" says the actress who can't pronounce her "r"'s or her "t"'s in this fun packed B fossil. There is much here to enjoy for bad movie lovers: the co-pilot of the boat who is such an offensive African-American stereotype that even racists would roll their eyes, the actress who has so many speech defects that she is sometimes unintelligible ("don' you evah wonduh abou' the many unusual dings around heah? The shews, my accen(t)?"), the absurd shrews who are nothing but dogs with silly masks on them, the studly lead actor with bad skin who has the best line in the movie when the scientist, relieved that the shrews are no longer a danger, states that we still need to worry about overpopulation. Our manly hero grabs the heroine, plants a wet one on her and says, "oh, I don't think I'll worry about overpopulation for a while" (maybe not, but make sure your kids get a good speech therapist if the heroine is going to be their mother!). This is everything a low budget horror movie should be. The disc also contains a Gumby movie, trailers, and another B movie. Lots of fun!

I Bury The Living getting bottom billing? I don't think so.
This transfer of I Bury The Living is OK, if a bit dark and contrasty. It is nowhere near archival quality, but there's nothing in this particular transfer to destroy the experience.

The films basic plot involves a man's discovery that people seem to die every time he marks their plot with a black pin on the caretaker's map of a cemetary. Richard Boone is memorable as the inheritor of the position of cemetary caretaker. Boone was notable among actors of the '50s for being able to generate deadpan credibility without being either too Method on the one hand or too Jack Webb on the other. And although it is jarring at first, after a couple of viewings, even Theodore Bikel's thick and near-vaudevillian Scottish brogue may grow on you.

I Bury The Living is really about the ordeal the Boone character undergoes through his encounter with The Unknown. The dis-ease the film achieves with minimal means is impressive. The score suffuses every frame with a subtly eerie mood, and for film history buffs, the fx may at times make the film feel like a flashback, believe it or not, to German Expressionist cinema of the 20s.

Recommended. This is definitely not just another 50s drive-in flick. Director Albert Band made one other thoughtful late 50s moodstudy --usually bundled in TV movie packages as a horror film, too-- entitled Face of Fire, based on a short story Stephen Crane. Find that if you can. (As for The Killer Shrews, which shares this DVD and inexplicably has top of the box billing, it IS pretty much just another 50s drive-in flick. But we won't dwell on it.)

"KICKIN'!"
Black Heat is not as hard to find as one might think. I was in Hollywood video browsing the action section and it jumped off the bottom shelf and kicked me in the shin. It hurt like a muther!

So bad it's good!
Yet another pick from classic 1970s blaxploitation. It's definitely not Dolemite, but it had enough action to keep me occupied for all 96 minutes. This one's hard to find in regular video stores. Amazon is about the only place I know that even carries this film. A great addition!

Rent it....
A decent movie about a cycle of poverty and addiction...Brittany Murphy and Jeremy Jordan (yes, Jeremy "The Right Kind of Love" Jordan!) stand out with their performances in an otherwise Lifetime-movie-of-the-week caliber film. Worth a watch, for sure, and at a low price might be worth purchasing if you're a big Murphy or JJ fan...

FALLING SKY IS AMAZING!
This touching film has truely moved me! Brittney Murphey did an AMAZING job! this film follows a single part in poverty with daughter (murphey) and is so incredibly INSPIRATIONAL and TOUCHING! with many SHOCKING and SUPRISING twists and turns! ITS SURE TO BE LOVED, it should be a LAW for EVERYONE TO WATCH IT!

Mary Pickford - A Life on Film
Released in DVD by Image Entertainment (28 August, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Hugh Munro Neely
Average review score:

The Life of a Legend
I was really excited to see this after I bought it because I am a huge Mary Pickford fan and because many of her movies only partially survive. I had a seen a preview on another Milestone release and was happy to hear that Buddy Rogers and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. were commenting on her. The story was told and not a whole lot of new information was given that could not be found in books, but clips from rare movies were shown like Kiki and Secrets. However, some information seems to contradict some things that I have read, so I am not sure how completely accurate this film is.

A WELL MADE BIOGRAPHY
IF YOU LOVE MARY PICKFORD AND WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HER LIFE, THIS IS A VERRY WELL MADE BIOGRAPHY. IT`S HOSTED BY WHOOPIE GOLDBERG ??? AND IT TAKES YOU THROUGH HER BIRTH IN 1893 TO HER DEATH IN 1979. YOU SEE PEOPLE LIKE DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS JR AND HER LAST HUSBAND CHARLES "BUDDY" ROGERS TALKING ABOUT THEIR FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH HER AND OTHER ACTORS AND FRIENDS TALKING ABOUT WHO SHE WAS AND WHAT SHE DID. YOU ALSO SEE A CHRONOLOGY OF THE FILMS SHE MADE FROM HER FIRSTS SHORTS TO HER FEW TALKIES, THIS WAS INTERESTING TO ME BECAUSE THERE`S A LOT OF STUFF I NEVER SAW BEFORE. SO,IF YOU LOVE MARY PICKFORD LIKE ME AND DON`T HAVE TIME TO READ A BOOK ABOUT HER YOU`LL PROBABLY LIKE THIS. IT ALSO HAD A NICE RUNNING TIME OF 96 MIN.

The Monkees - Our Favorite Episodes
Released in DVD by Rhino Video (12 June, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Directors: Richard Nunis, Micky Dolenz, Bruce Kessler, James Komack, Bob Rafelson, Sidney Miller, Gerald Shepard, Russ Mayberry, James Frawley, and David Winters
Whether you're indulging nostalgia or experiencing the Monkees for the first time, Our Favorite Episodes--chosen by Davey Jones, Mickey Dolenz, Peter Tork, and Michael Nesmith--is a curious time capsule. Even for veteran Monkeephiles, it's obvious that the TV series, totaling 58 episodes from 1966 to 1968, hasn't aged very gracefully. It's fun as a pop-cultural artifact, and original fans will fondly recall the eagerness with which each week's episode was anticipated. Looking back, however, the shows are marginally amusing, and their improvisational, low-budget strategy tends to limit their lasting appeal. For die-hard fans it won't matter a bit; any chance to own and archive the Monkee phenomenon (with brief latter-day interviews included) is going to be welcomed and thoroughly enjoyed.

Because Jones's favorite episode was actually the Emmy-winning "Royal Flush," the inclusion of "Hitting the High Seas" is a conspicuous blunder, but it's compensated by Peter's "Monkee vs. Machine." Directed by series producer (and then-budding filmmaker) Bob Rafelson, and featuring comedian Stan Freberg as a stodgy toy-company executive, this early episode was a first-season highlight. Mickey selected (and directed) the series finale, "Mijacogeo (The Frodis Caper)," which is noteworthy for a filmed performance of Tim Buckley singing a rare acoustic version of "Siren Song" (further proof that the Monkees were hipper than their TV personas). Mike's favorite "Fairy Tale" is a wild romp indeed, with Nesmith in drag (as a fairy princess), sounding shockingly like Cher from her later TV variety show. They're semi-inspired at best, but these vintage episodes still capture the lunacy that accompanied the meteoric success of the "Pre-Fab Four." --Jeff Shannon

Their Favorite Episodes
You can't really disagree with someone else's favorite episodes, they are THEIR favorites. For the most part, I found myself agreeing with the Monkees. While I think Mike's and Micky's pick are the standouts, I also enjoyed Peter's MONKEES vs. MACHINES.

I do wish Rhino would release a Monkees Holiday DVD with the two Halloween episodes and the Christmas installment featuring Butuch Patrck.

A Good DVD "Stand In"
This disc was Rhino's first attempt to package Monkee episodes in the then-new DVD format. Clips of each of the Monkees from their 1997 documentary are used to introduce their favorite episodes.

It has already been noted that the episode that Davy mentions is really "Royal Flush" ("Hitting the High Seas" is shown instead as his favorite). "Royal Flush" would have been a better choice because it would've balanced the DVD better to have 2 episodes from the first season and 2 from the second, instead of having 3 from the second and only 1 from the first.

The film quality was a bit of a disappointment, especially during parts of "Fairy Tale". The quality is much better on Rhino's second Monkee DVD (Monkees Volume 1 & 2) although there are some good moments on this disc. Some of the episodes have the original end credits with Kellogg's products. It's fun on both discs to pause the picture and use the "step" button on your DVD remote to discover things that have never been noticed before on VHS copies.

The chapter breaks are much better than on Rhino's second Monkee DVD and there are actually breaks for all of the songs in each episode; even the Kellogg's commercial shown during Mijacogeo has a chapter break.

Since the DVD format was still young when Rhino released this, it has no extras, not even closed-captioning. It's too bad that the Monkees couldn't have recorded audio commentary in addition to introducing the episodes. A photo gallery and some more Kellogg's commercials wouldn't been a nice extra also.

Fans desparate for any Monkee episodes on DVD will want to pick this up but keep in mind that the VHS edition is packaged better in a retro-style metal Monkee lunchbox with a mini-ceral box and puzzle. This DVD will have to do as a "stand in" until Rhino gets around to issuing the entire series on DVD.

Love Me Tender
Released in DVD by Fox Home Entertainme (13 August, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Robert D. Webb
Starring: Richard Egan, Debra Paget, and Elvis Presley
Here's the alpha point of Elvis Presley's film career, the introduction of the raw-boned Mississippi boy into Hollywood pictures. E.P. takes a supporting role, and his entrance is delayed for nearly 20 minutes: kid brother to returning Civil War soldier Richard Egan, his character marries Egan's sweetheart Debra Paget when Egan is presumed dead. It's a chance for Elvis, his face still trembling with baby fat, to emote dramatically and finish tragically, both of which he does passably well. A serviceable Western, the film shamelessly shoehorns four Presley tunes into two sequences: E.P. crooning on mama's porch, and performing at a country fair (where starchy locals don't seem disturbed at the boy's gyrating hips and happy feet). All in all, a shrewd way to put a foot in Hollywood's doorway, and, of course, one of the last Presley movies to feel like a real film and not a vehicle for the King. --Robert Horton
Average review score:

Elvis Presley's first film at the age of 21.
Nothing extra in this DVD but the original trailer of "Love Me Tender" available to see in English and the Spanish version and trailers of FLAMING STAR (1960) and WILD IN THE COUNTRY (1961). This film is shown in squeezy widescreen.

Reno Brothers
Good movie worthy of any western collection as well as Elvis collection. Again for those who don't think Elvis had talent to act this first movie showed what could have been developed. The death scene is good. Good movie for the whole family.

My Favorite Elvis Movie!
Love Me Tender is, by far, my favorite Elvis movie. Yes, Elvis sings but it is the storyline that clinches my 5 star rating.

Elvis plays Clint Reno, the youngest of his brothers who stays behind to tend the family farm while the others go off to fight in the Civil War. The family receives word that the oldest brother, Vance (played by a very handsome Richard Egan) is killed. Cathy, Vance's love, has lost her family in the war and now that Vance is killed, she has no one. Clint marries her and believes that she loves him the way in which he loves her. He does not realize that her heart still belongs to Vance.

Their lives are forever changed when Vance along with his brothers, reappears. He is intent upon marrying Cathy, of spending the rest of his life with her. He soon finds out that she is not free. She is now Clint's wife. Shattered and heartbroken, he conceals his feelings from his younger brother. Yet, he cannot contain the overwhelming love he has for Cathy. Nor can Cathy remain so indifferent. Knowing that Clint will soon discover the feelings they still have for each other, he makes plans to go away. But Fate intervenes.

One reckless act during the war jeopardizes Vance's future. He and his fellow soldiers have taken money. Money that has been traced back to them. They are ordered to return it or face prison. Vance and his brothers agree to this intent upon finding the other members of his troop that took part in this robbery.

Unexpectedly, Clint meets up with the members of Vance's troop and learns the horrible truth. Vance had always loved Cathy. Had longed to marry her. He believes that he was played for a fool and his jealousy and anger escalate causing him to act rashly.

Love Me Tender is an excellant story. This isn't a musical nor does Elvis sing in every scene. The plot is tightly woven with sadness, betrayal, jealousy and a love that will not be denied.

Beforwarned, the ending isn't happily-ever-after. Elvis does die yet I believe that there could have been no other ending. He could never have made Cathy happy especially once Vance came back. With every glance she cast his way, the longing was there in her eyes. And this he knew . . .

An excellant plot, believable characters and the sound of the King's voice. What better way to spend an afternoon. :)

White Fang 2: Myth of the White Wolf
Released in DVD by Walt Disney Home Video (06 May, 2003)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Ken Olin
Starring: Scott Bairstow and Charmaine Craig
Scott Bairstow takes over for Ethan Hawke in this spirited (if clichéd) sequel involving a peaceful Haida Indian tribe and a con man in preacher's garb (Alfred Molina, just oozing evil) in 1906 Alaska. Bairstow discovers his inner wolf as he bonds with the tribe and falls in love with the chief's spirited daughter (Charmaine Craig), White Fang finds true love in a snow-white female wolf, and together they take on the dastardly villains who have stopped the caribou and imprisoned the hunters of the tribe. Less Jack London than a juvenile Dances with Wolves, this clunky but action-packed cliffhanger combines old-fashioned matinee Western clichés with Native American spiritualism and a celebration of nature. Though it's hardly subtle, the energetic action scenes and the beauty of the Alaskan summer make this an engaging adventure for the younger set. --Sean Axmaker
Average review score:

Disney made this up.
I've read White fang and there is no mention of Myth of a White Wolf. Disney had to have a sequel, so they made up this story.

Another Great Adventure...................
In this movie Jack has gone back to San Francisco and his friend Henry is mining his claim and caring for White Fang.
This story is mixed with Native American spiritualality and mysticism. They are in need of the white wolf (White Fang, or is it Henry?) to lead them to the caribou they are in need of to prevent starvation among their people.
This sequel is very entertaining with beautiful scenery.
A great family film.

Great Family Movie
I have watched this movie a number of times and still find the story to be interesting. The simplicity and predictability of this movie makes it a great movie for younger elementary children, but there is enough plot and action to keep the family entertained. I enjoy the Alaskan setting and the images of the Haida village. There is a love story woven in with the young hero's role of finding the caribou and saving the village, but neither plot goes into anything overly sentimental or complicated.

I have used this movie in a fourth grade classroom to have them identify the main characters, the setting, the problem(plot), and the solution: things that are found in any good story, be it written or in a movie. They enjoyed the movie and it worked well for the assignment. This is a great family movie because it contains these basic story elements and does it well, making it watchable again and again.

Head of the Family
Released in DVD by Koch Full Moon Releasing (23 April, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Charles Band
Average review score:

Small Town Mutants
The Stackpooles are different from the rest of the town. They have money. They keep themselves apart from the town except when stocking up supplies. They are also quadruplets mutated in unusual ways.

One brother is dumb but super-strong. Another brother has super-senses (and really big eyes), the sister has unresistable powers of sexuality. The last brother, Myron, has all of the brains. He is the head of the family with a head as big as most peoples' torsos. They are also connected telepathically.

Grifters, infidelity and bribery drive a plot that reveals what the Stackpooles are up to in their isolated home. But Myron really hates not being in control and the battle of wills and tortures begins.

With liberal amounts of nudity, sex, and colorful characters this is an enjoyable and sometimes silly horror film that is very light on the blood and guts (although there is some finger breaking). I found it to be quite rewatchable and one of the better thought out Full Moon films. Myron is a wonderful evil genius.

Different. Definately different.
I love bad movies. I have dozens of truly silly flicks and this one just fits right in. The special effects were considerably better than I expected, as was the acting. As usual, Jacqueline Lovell took what was given to her and made the best of it. Not nearly as bad as BEAST OF YUCCA FLATS (which is in my opinion THE worst movie ever made) but still fun.

Let's face it, people, if you want to enjoy yourself and watch these movies you need a great sense of humor, a willingness to overlook flawed material, and a good stiff drink. Otherwise, you're wasting your time. This ain't Oscar material. This is sit back with your friends, crank up the sound, relax and get ready to laugh your butt off. That's what bad movies are all about. This one will do just fine, thank you.

Funny Movie If You Like Big Heads
This movie is about people backmailling a family of freaks who
do brain operations on people. These poor blackmailers do not know what they got themselves in for. If you like B horror movies then you will like this one. No one in this movie is normal.

The Screaming Skull/Werewolf Vs Vampire
Released in DVD by Madacy Entertainment (20 March, 2001)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Directors: Maurice Vaccarino and Alex Nicol
Average review score:

Madacy evil strikes again!
Yet again, Madacy has gone out of their way to find the worst prints imaginable to sell to the unsuspecting viewing public.

The first feature, "The Screaming Skull" (a title that's given me a headache for decades!), is exceptionally muddy and dark, obviously an extremely poor dub from a several-generations old video source. The second feature on the tape, "The Werewolf vs. the Vampire Woman" is pure pan n' scan from a very scuffed and chopped print. Distortions and color blur are obvious on the edges of the picture.

In "The Screaming Skull", young and nervous newy wed is terrorized by a skull, supposedly that of her new hubby's ex, who died from a crushed skull/drowning in a lilly pond. Grade Z acting all around.

While "The Screaming Skull" is a classic low-budget horror flick from the 1950's, "The Werewolf vs. the Vampire Woman" is of European 1971 vintage.

In this one, two college girls travel to eastern Europe in search of a legendary grave of a lady vampire. They meet up with a spooky guy when the run out of gas. Naturally, he's a werewolf. Well, with at least one of the two college girls, I'd be howling at the moon, too.

Anyway, they stupidly awaken the lady vampire, and after a bunch of killings, the werewolf and vampire have it out. Obviously the "director" was a fan of "The Six Million Dollar Man", because the lady vampires run and jump in slow motion (not as sexy as it sounds). There are hints of breast from time to time, but if there were any naughty scenes originally, they appear to have been cut (European versions have five to six more minutes then the US drive-in release, which this seems to be).

I would strongly urge DVD collectors to avoid any of the horror titles in this Madacy set.

I gave the disc two stars only because of the interactive menus. They are the only part of the disc that was nicely done, and there is a Popeye cartoon added for "intermission".

Let's all go to the lobby!
There wasn't much problems like people, were saying. Sure the quality of these movies were like the quality of VHS, but don't spoil yourself with all of that, just watch the movie, that's what it's for. The only part of this DVD that skipped or really messed up for me was during the Werewolf vs Vampire woman trailer, when they were showing a close-up of the moon it kind of skipped but that wasn't a biggy. This DVD features trailers from the 2 movies on this, and Draculas Daughters. There is also an intermission cartoon when one movie is finished. I found that to be pretty neat, The Screaming Skulls trailer was funny, because it said that if you died when watching this movie that they would pay for burial cost. The only thing you would die of from watching this film is the price you payed to see it! The Werewolf vs Vampire Woman was an interesting movie I had never heard of before owning this DVD. It has alot more blood and gore than I expected (which was none)! This DVD is worth a look, really!

You'll love it or hate it.
Want to know if you'll either love this or hate it? Okay, here goes:

The "screaming skull" makes it's appearance by being rolled across the floor.

Now, do you A) think that that's funny or B) think that that's stupid. If you chose A, then you're in luck, this double feature is for you. If you chose B, well then why are you even looking at reviews of this schlock?
