Pocahontas (Not Disney)
Released in DVD by Good Times Home Vide (06 August, 2002)
MPAA Rating: G (General Audience)
Average review score:

This seems to be more like the real story...
You have probably seen the Disney version of "Pocahontas", well you may have noticed that the story is totally wrong. Pocahontas was about 12 years old when John Smith arrived at her village. Well, in the Goodtimes version the story seems to be the real deal. Pocahontas is a young girl who wants to keep the peace alive between the white men and the indians, there is absolutely no romance between J. Smith and Pocahontas. There is also great songs in this film, songs like "Land of Pocahontas" and "Did they come to take our land?". The movie is short, just long enough to keep your child's attention.

Praise

MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: John Curran (II)

loving puts your heart at risk
Apart from featuring constant screen cigarette smoking, this Australian film directed by John Curran defies expectations. Set in a Brisbane boarding house it presents Peter Fenton as an asthmatic who begins a romance with eczema sufferer Sacha Horler. Curran's formal style lessens the grunginess of the locale, though at times he overdoes the soundtrack with aural effects, so we can concentrate on the phenonema of the relationship. What is remarkable about the treatment is that neither of the characters are shown to be losers, in spite of their physical challenges. Rather there is much emphasis on flesh, in particular Horler's physical insatiablity and the demand it makes on Fenton. In response to Horler's comment that she thinks herself "hideous", Curran cuts to a crowd's apparent look of disapproval which is later revealed to be their fear of being group photographed.
In spite of the suggestion that Horler is a monstrous child/woman, the actor invests her with a vulnerability that is very appealing. And Fenton's tenderness is also pleasing.
The film suffers without Horler, and Curran doesn't know how to end, which may be the fault of the source novel by Andrew McGahan. Depicting residents of a boarding house as men without dreams or levity is perhaps too easy, but at least we get to see a physical transformation. Curran repeats one set-up from a longer shot, which predetermines the ending, and provides an amusing if inexplicable parallel between the boarding house and a hospital ward after hours.

Now I'm a fan
Up until yesterday, I had only heard of Red Skelton, and saw a few clips on TV from time to time. I saw this DVD in the sale rack at [a physical store] for less than seven bucks. What could I lose since it's just over ? After watching this short film (less than an hour) I became a full fledged fan.

The prison escape is absolutely priceless. Now I'm on Amazon looking for more Red Skelton films.

Raiders of the Sun
Released in DVD by New Concorde Home En (08 April, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Cirio H. Santiago
Average review score:

Great Cormania!
As presented by Roger Corman, the famous producer whose SciFi
epics have launched stellar Hollywood careers, "Raiders of The
Sun" on DVD allows current audiences the nostalgia of a return to the movies of the 1980s and '90s that were influenced by the success of "Mad Max" and "Road Warrior." Martial arts movie great Richard Norton proves to be a compelling hero in one of his early lead roles - demonstrating the charisma upon which he built his starring career in action films. Solid character actor William Steis shows up as a henchman. The plot has all the classic apocalyptic ingredients. We are treated to
generous doses of anarchy, insurrection, and ultimate salvation
from the dark forces who rule with an arsenal of explosives and
vehicular hardware. Typical of Corman's releases, the budget is
not so generous, but a reliance on emerging talent and film
makers - over high costs - is often part of the Corman formula
and always a part of the fun in seeing his movies again. Enjoy!

Range of Motion

MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)

This movie helps people get through hard times
I was attracted to this movie since I read "Range of Motion" by Elizabeth Berg. Watching Rebecca DeMornay (proving to be a great actress in this one) in this movie version lived up to the greatness of the book. Melanie Mayron (Melissa from the television show Thirtysomething) is her friend. This is a fantastic movie of quality. I have a similar incident where a family member is grasping on for life, and this movie (which I have watched a number of times) always helps me in hoping for the impossible to happen, and shows everyone that hoping is not the most foolish thing. Sometimes loving someone and believing in only the positive aspects of life...and what one has (as opposed to what one does not have) are the most rewarding qualities of life.

TRULY a RARE EXPERIENCE
Upon viewing these DVDs it was truly "the experience " of rare moments with EP. I was able to see for the first time some television show clippings where ELVIS had appeared that filled up the edited versions from other videos or DVDs I have seen. Watching these DVDs ended my search of ever wondering what event happened before and after a skit. One of my favorite at the Milton Berle's show where Milton was mistaken to be Elvis and got his clothes rip by avid fans . Anyone who really wants to get to know EP should get this DVD and be the first in their collection and one thing I am sure of. you will want to have more....

The Real Untouchables
Released in DVD by Goldhil Home Media (04 October, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Real Untouchables and James Woods

Showcases the crime fighting careers of Eliot Ness
The Real Untouchables presents three outstanding productions showcasing the crime fighting careers of Eliot Ness, Melvin Purvis, and Thomas E. Dewey. Ably narrated by James Woods, and blending historical photos and newsreel clips, with commentaries by historians and family members, here are the authentic biographies of unusual men who rose to the occasion and fought against crime during the lawless years of Prohibition. Eliot Ness is best known for the fictional television series based on his "autobiography", a memoir that had a great deal of embellishment. He was a most remarkable man who was incorruptible and fearless in the face of Al Capone and Chicago's organized crime syndicates. Melvin Purvis was an FBI agent who tracked down some of the most notorious bank robber gangs to plague the Midwest. Thomas E. Dewey took on Lucky Luciano and the New York mafia families. The DVD format provides wide screen presentation, character profiles, production notes, chapter selection, as well as cast and crew profiles. The Real Untouchables is a very highly recommended addition to personal, school, and community library DVD collections.
