Greatest Heroes and Legends of the Bible: Joshua and the Battle of Jericho

Great video with accurate Bible facts
I purchased this dvd along with Jonah and the whale (part of the Greatest Heroes and Legends of the Bible)very sceptically. I was debating about another Bible series videos which has more actual videos but is much more costly. When I first watched it with my 2 1/2 yr old, I found the animation well done. The actual events in the movie were fairly accurate. Charlton Heston gives a brief synopsis before the video. My daughter loves this video and we plan to purchase more in this series.

This is the REAL deal!
GOODTIMES had to use 16mm prints BUT it doesn't matter...the original SOUNDTRACK is intact. The GOODTIMES DVDs are the ones to buy over the altered RHINO discs. Don't let the price fool you! This is the GUMBY and POKEY you grew up with!

Storyteller's Delight!
I own the VHS of this movie, and can tell you it is based on fact. What a tragic tale told so wonderfully. It has been said there is a lot of nudity, but truly not as much as one could expect. This film really does give the viewer a trip into the royal Turkish harem at the end of the Empire! You won't be disappointed.

Herbert Von Karajan - His Legacy for Home Video - Richard Strauss - Der Rosenkavalier
Released in DVD by Sony Classics (12 June, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Ana Tomowa Sintow and Agnes Baltsa
Average review score:

A melancholic Rosenkavalier, for a change
I suppose this is the Karajan Rosenkavalier that used to be available on LD on Sony. Karajan's view of this comedy always was grand an romantic, with more than a melancholic overtone. In his first video with Schwarzkopf and the delightful Anneliese Rothenberger and Sena Jurinac, maybe because he was younger, the tempi still retained some vivacity and animation. Here, things are quite slower, but the Vienna Philharmonic prevents it to sound heavy or flabby. The production is the traditional Salzburger, but it works really nice still. Every instruction is carefully followed and it has a historic quality of itself anyway. The cast couldn't be starrier and I think that everybody is singing better here than in the DG CDs. Anna Tomowa-Sintow is in heavenly voice - actually, I think that she never sang better in her whole life. The voice is in its creamiest and the pianissimi are unbelievable. But she doesn't quite look as the Marschallin. She's not sophisticated, elegant, womanly or attractive enough. She's not even motherly and warm. She is there and has a somewhat congenial attitude. Agnes Baltsa is one of my favourite Octavians - the voice is incisive and has the necessary guts for a male role and she does look boyish. However, I think that in this video she lacks the ultimate conviction as an actress and I wasn't so impressed as I was with Fassbaender or Ann Howells. Janet Perry looks lovely and has sensational pianissimi, but that's all about her. She lacks charisma and the voice is a bit on the "doll soprano" category. She is no rival to Bonney or Popp. However, I suppose, that the main source of interest is Kurt Moll's sensational Baron Ochs. There may have been funnier and more chcaracterful Ochs, such as Edelmann himself in the older Karajan video, but nobody sings this role as gorgeously as he does. His Ochs is a bit too gentlemanly, but he's at ease and gets everybody's attention. The minor roles are splendidly taken - especially Vinson Cole's Italian Tenor and Helga Müller-Mollinari's Annina.

Superlative recording
This DVD recording of the Alpine Symphony by Strauss is amazing. Having had his release on the Karajan Gold edition for a while, I thought it would be good to pick up yet another Karajan interpretation.

The Berlin Philharmonic play beautifully especially at the section following the storm. Karajan appears to be completely overcome by the passionate BPO strings. I would dare say Karajan gave this music his all to prove how valuable this piece is in the repetoir.

The storm sequence is wonderfully played. I wish the cameraman could have captured a shot of the wind machine...as i have never seen one before. Other than that though there are some fabulous shots of Karajan's conducting, strings, brass, woodwinds, ect. The only neglected section is the percussion section. The picture appears clear, and the sonics are great in my opinion.

The music itself really packs a wollop and deserves to be played on a quality surround sound system. This is my introduction to the Karajan Legacy Series and i am very impressed with this recording of the Alpine Symphony.

Herbert Von Karajan - His Legacy for Home Video: Giuseppe Verdi - Falstaff
Released in DVD by Sony Music (Video) (26 March, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Herbert von Karajan

An excellent Falstaff performance
This is a live 1982 production of Verdi's last opera, at the Salzburg festival with Herbert von Karajan conducting the Wiener Philharmoniker. The singers are Giuseppe Tadei (Sir John Falstaff), Raina Kabaivanska (Alice Ford), Rolando Panerai (Ford), Francisco Araiza (Fenton) and Christa Ludwig (Quickly).
Musically, the performance is excellent and the stage is finely designed, specially the forest in the third act. Video quality is high and sound quality is good. I highly recommend this recording of Verdi's probably best opera.

It is not the wright video
It is supposed that this VHS will also include the Tchaikowsky's First Piano Concerto performed by Alexis Weissenberg, but there is nothing of that on it. I had the same problem with another VHS I bought thinking it would include the Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto, performed by Weissenberg too.. The one I received was a extremously bad biography of the composer.
