Angel & Badman/Winds of Wasteland
Released in DVD by Good Times Home Vide (25 June, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: James Edward Grant
Starring: John Wayne, Gail Russell, and Harry Carey

Excellent DVD release of 2 early John Wayne Republic movies
As these 2 and many other early John Wayne movies that he made for Republic are in the public domain,it often results in many DVD and VHS releases of the movies with some releases having excellent picture and sound quality, others not as fortunate usually from companies such as GoodTimes, Madacy, UAV Entertainment, Platinum Disc Corporation and oterhs. In this case, the picture and sound on this GoodTimes DVD release are excellent for these 2 movies in the public domain. Although there are no extras to note of aside from scene access, the picture and sound quality make up for it and for this low price and this is a dual sided, dual layer DVD so you get Angel and The Badman on 1 side and on the other side of the DVD, you get Winds of The Wasteland. You get the original B&W movies with their original mono sound in the original aspect ratio being full frame as there was no widescreen at the time. If you are a vintage western fan, a fan of classic movies, or a John Wayne fan, this dual sided, dual layer DVD is a must have, especially if you can find it in discount store (Wal-Mart, KMart, etc.)budget DVD bins for about .... I do have another DVD of Angel and The Badman on a Platinum Disc Great American Western series DVD which has apparently came from either a VHS tape dub complete with the "blips" in the imaging during 1 part of the movie.

Lisa Rinna & Gail O'Grady share the same man (w/o knowing)!
Lisa Rinna and Gail O'Grady become best friends..not realizing that they share the same man! Both women perform very well in this movie...I have been a big fan of both of them since Melrose Place and NYPD Blue. Sally Kirkland also does a great job in this movie as Gail O'Grady's mother. This movie is filled with so many different ingredients: intrigue, lessons on overcoming fears, and it helps one become stronger in believing inside what can truly make your life happy. I've seen it a few times, and enjoy it more each time.

This DVD is also contained in the boxed set of AYBS
When I purchased the boxed set of the first 5 series of "Are You Being Served?" Amazon.com suggested this DVD as well. It seemed only natural, since it's labeled "Volume 6" -- but note that this is a duplicate of the Volume 6 disc in the 7-DVD boxed set!

So despite Amazon.com's suggestion, don't buy this if you're also buying the boxed set. :^>

(I didn't intend to review the disc itself, only to make this information available ... but this DVD is one of the best, and it includes a somewhat rare episode that isn't often shown in on U.S. PBS stations: "Founder's Day," in which the staff put on a "This Is Your Life"-type presentation for Mr. Grace.)

Aviation Week Two-Pack (Superior Airpower, Ultimate Dogfighting)
Released in DVD by Goldhil Home Media (27 March, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Superior Airpower
The three hour-long programs on Superior Airpower provide a look at the people and technology that define American airpower in the modern era. The first program focuses on the role of the aircraft carrier, and some spectacular footage shot aboard the USS Constellation vividly illustrates how thousands of crewmen, from the all-powerful "air boss" to sailors laboring several levels below the flight deck, must carefully coordinate their efforts to launch and land jet fighters. An informative segment details the capabilities of all the various planes based on today's carriers, and of course there is plenty of heart-stopping action footage of jets taking off and landing. Another program follows the development of "stealth" aircraft, planes that are virtually invisible to radar, from the drawing board to deployment over Baghdad in the Gulf War. Interviews with engineers who labored to make what seemed a far- fetched fantasy into a very effective airplane provide a glimpse into the shadowy and super-secret world of designing modern weapons.

A textbook study of how airpower is deployed on a modern battlefield is the theme of the third program, which details the American air deployment during the Gulf War. Interviews with veterans, including General Chuck Horner, who commanded American air operations in the Gulf, as well as a considerable amount of action footage shot from cockpit cameras, provide a look at the planning and execution of what is considered the most effective air attacks in history. These three programs offer a diverse but reasonably coherent look at how the modern American military can project its power virtually anywhere in the world. -- Robert J. McNamara

Ultimate Dogfighting
Ultimate Dogfighting features two complete programs spanning the entire history of aerial combat. The first program tells virtually the entire story of fighter aircraft, beginning with the biplanes piloted by pioneering aces in World War I. Through archival footage and interviews with veterans, the evolution of fighter planes through the decades is detailed, and the pivotal role played by fighter pilots in World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam is examined. The second program on the disc gives the viewer a look at the modern training programs for fighter pilots, with a particular focus on the intense training America pilots receive in air combat maneuvering (ACM) classes. Great fighter pilots hone their skills endlessly, and the cameras follow American fighter jocks who take to the air and engage in mock combat with instructors flying jets that mimic those of enemy powers. The cameras aboard a modern fighter provide a pilot's-eye view of the adversary, down to how an enemy jet would look while in the sights of the advanced electronic weapons system that would launch an air-to-air missile. These programs are intelligently assembled and very well photographed, and together they provide an entertaining and informative look at how fighter planes and tactics have developed over more than 80 years. --Robert J. McNamara

MODERN AIRCOMBAT
I was very pleased with these two DVDs. Ultimate Dogfighting is in two parts and covers dogfighting from WW1 to the present day. Interesting interviews with the aces like Robin Olds (WW2 and Vietnam) and Ray Brookes (WW1). Second Part covers the training and has excellent in cockpit video during DACM sorties. The bonus tracks are neat too. Loved the computer animated sections that illustrated two aces talking you through their moves as they successfully downed their enemy. First guy was WW2 in the Pacific and the second an F86 pilot vs MiG-15s in Korea.

The Second DVD is Navy oriented and is just as much fun as the second. I would not hestitate to recommend.

Her first Baby Genius video and she loves it
My daughter is 15 months old and has been watching this DVD for about a month now. I hate to admit it, but she enjoys it more than most of her Baby Einstein movies! I think some of the scenes are cheesy, but the important thing is, she enjoys it. She dances around when she hears the music and she recognizes the animals and says them aloud. The music is a lot more peppy than Baby Einstein. Although I'm a big fan of Baby Einstein, especially for the learning aspect their movies, this Baby Genius DVD is more for entertainment and fun. I find it a great addition to her video collection.

The Bachelor/In Love and War
Released in DVD by Warner Home Video (29 April, 2003)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Richard Attenborough
Starring: Chris O'Donnell and Sandra Bullock
Average review score:

fine acting
A great combination of acting and directing. I didn't expect to find this level of maturity and emphasis on acting skills from Sandra Bullock. No question the combination with Chris O'Donnell was a success and the directing by Richard Attenborough masterful. In my opinion it took his directing to bring out the acting ability of Sandra Bullock that I always felt lay just below the surface. Don't get me wrong, some of her other performances and movies have been great, but they relied on great stories/beauty to be a hit. This one adds great acting as well, and what a combination it makes. I don't quite understand why it hasn't already become a major hit, but I'm quite sure time will justify my rating of 5 stars. For those viewers who have seen other versions of Hemingway's story, this one is so far ahead it's not even funny. The supporting cast is exceptional as is the quality of the production/filming. Lets keep our fingers crossed that more performances like this will be forthcoming.

Irish "Exposure"....
This is a fantastic show which my mother hooked me on a few years ago. If you've never caught an episode on PBS, now is your chance. Unlike glitzy American prime-time soap operas, these characters have a great deal of depth and the status quo can change, dramatically, at any time. If you liked the quirky characters and situations of "Northern Exposure", you will love this show!
