10,000 Black Men Named George
Released in DVD by Paramount Home Video (12 August, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Robert Townsend
Average review score:

Captivating!!!
A simple movie in a college, something other than the usual lecture, a few hours to relax during an early morning Saturday class... That's how this movie started; yet it opened my eyes, taught me some history and made me wonder where the strength of the "Georges" came from. Captivating, enjoyable and action packed, this story also teaches the viewer an important history lesson, as well as a lesson of life and freedom and our fellow man. Maybe the directing wasn't perfect - I don't remember. Maybe the actors weren't the best - I don't remember that either. But for what I walked away with - I give the movie: Five Stars!!!

3-2-1 Penguins - The Amazing Carnival of Complaining
Released in DVD by Warner Home Video (07 January, 2003)
MPAA Rating: G (General Audience)
3,2,1, Penguins, by the creators of VeggieTales, is a wholesome show that promotes virtuous behavior (without being preachy), while sporting a hip animation style similar to that of Jimmy Neutron. Three flying penguins--Zidgel, Midgel, and Fidgel--whisk a bored Jason away from his Grandmum's house into outer space to a place called "Uncle Blobb's Carnival Moon." The carnival promises to be great fun, but carnival-goers are instantly turned into chronic complainers thanks to the interference of Uncle Blobb. It's Uncle Blobb's plan to allow those "seeds of discontent" to spread until the planet becomes uninhabitable--then he can dispose of the "seeds" and earn a fortune repopulating the planet. Can Jason and his penguin friends stop Uncle Blobb and save the planet? Will Jason's interplanetary experience have any relevance to his potentially boring summer at Grandmum's house? My Son really enjoys this!
He's 2 but loves the penguins, especially Kevin who wasn't mentioned in the review. I like it because it throws in a lot of subtle humor that I get! I don't think he gets the lesson yet but maybe it's being drummed in there subtly !! This is a must have to your Veggie Tales collection!

3-2-1 Penguins - The Cheating Scales of Bullamanka
Released in DVD by Warner Home Video (01 October, 2002)
MPAA Rating: G (General Audience)
The adage "cheaters never prosper" takes on new meaning after spending a half hour with Zidgel, Midgel, and Fidgel, a trio of space-exploring penguins. After pig-tailed Michelle cheats her brother in a game of Squid-Tac-Toad, our feathered friends whisk her off to Bullamanka in a last-ditch effort to make peace between a couple of galactic kings. It seems that cheating is a universal phenomenon, and the Lizard King is the culprit. Now, Michelle must agree to contest his victory to save the good Bandicoot King from certain doom down the "gurgler." In between clever one-liners and general zaniness, viewers will catch the central message that "when you cheat, everyone loses." From the creators of VeggieTales, 3-2-1 Penguins! adheres to the same winning formula: quality cartoon-style humor wrapped in a timeless moral message, presented in a nonpreachy fashion. While the new series is still a fledgling, once these penguins find their, er, flippers, they will be as well loved as Bob and Larry. (Ages 5 and up) --Lynn Gibson

Whoa! Déjà vu!
After you've watched the first episode (Trouble on Planet-Wait-Your-Turn) you should see this one!
In the Cheating Scales of Bullamanka, the familiar characteristics of the Penguins are developed a little bit further, making then more interesting and enjoyable. It also includes several scenes that are closely relate to the previous episode. These are hilarious for the fact that they've been added at the perfect time with a clever twist. What I got a kick out of the most was the new landing gear. It's just a silly contraption that I guarantee it will make you laugh out loud!

The video starts with a brief, carry over scene that recaps the origin of the Penguins and the attitudes of the twins. Then things get rolling after Michelle plays a trick on her brother to win a game of Squid-Tac-Toad. The concept and techniques of this strange game are not made very clear. But it's a key element that later teaches Michelle the value of playing by the rules. Which she learns after experiencing a much more dramatic, live version of the game that also requires the participation of the penguins. There are a few new characters that appear in the video, two of which talk with a quick Australian accent. So at first it's difficult to catch their rapid banter, making the video one that needs to be watch again and again.

Next to the collection of Veggie Tales videos, 3-2-1 Penguins is a series that is well deserving of a spot on your self. Colorful, creative, entertaining and educational, it's another example of quality entertainment that will interest the minds of kids and adults. Big Idea does this all with natural ease and this second scenario earns them a five star rating 'Fair and Square'

Affliction
Released in DVD by Lions Gate Home Ente (20 May, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Paul Schrader
Starring: Nick Nolte, Sissy Spacek, and James Coburn
Average review score:

Deeply Affected by the Deep "Affliction".....
This review refers to the May 2003 release of Lion's Gate DVD edition of "Affliction".....

1998 was a year when World War II films and English period pieces took center stage. But amidst those wonderful films, there was also "Affliction". An excellent film and brillant character study that may leave you thinking about it for days afterwards. A superb piece of filmamking. Artful direction and a beautiful screenplay by Paul Schrader(who also wrote the screenplays for "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull"), skillfully filmed by Paul Sarossy, and exquiste acting by a cast that includes, Nick Nolte, James Coburn, Sissy Spacek and Willem Dafoe make for one deep and moving drama.

Dafoe captivatingly narrates this story of Wade Whitehouse(Nolte). A small town cop, whose past has a grip on him and won't let go. Wade who was raised by an alcoholic and abusive father(Coburn), now seems to be losing his own grip on reality as he tries to juggle his own dysfunctional life. He is in the midst of an investigation of an "accidental" hunting accident, he is trying (unsuccessfully) to mend his relationship with his young daughter, and trying to make some sort of life with his new girlfriend(Spacek). His past and his present come crashing down around him, as he examines his life and the bad memories are flooding back to him. Wade must try to break this cycle or live his life burdened with the chains of the past.

Nolte turns in what may be the performance of his career and was honored by the Nat'l Society of Film Crtics, and The New York Film Critic's Circle Awards for Best Actor in his role. Coburn is also superb and recieved an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the abusive father. I highly recommend this film to anyone who appreciates fine filmaking and an excellent drama.

This Lion's Gate DVD is an excellent transfer. The picture is sharp and clear and the colors vibrant. The sound is in Dolby Digital Stereo and is great for this film of almost all dialouge.
There are no bonus features, but it has subtitles in both English and Spanish and if you click on to the Lion's Gate logo in the main menu you will find some trailers as well.

A not to be missed film for lovers of great cinema. Thanks and enjoy...Laurie

Alfred Stieglitz - The Eloquent Eye
Released in DVD by Winstar Home Entertainment (10 July, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Alfred Stieglitz and Alfred Stiegliitz
Average review score:

Breathtaking!
This documentary is one of the finest I have seen. It chronicles the life and work of Alfred Stieglitz, with reflections by his wife, artist Georgia O'Keefe, and several other important 20th Century American artists and photographers. The film is illustrated with many of Stieglitz' powerful photographs and demonstrates his singular impact on photography as an art form. Stieglitz' support and influence on other artists is explored, as are exhibitions of paintings, photography and literary works that he introduced to the public via his New York galleries and his publication "Camera Works". I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BEAUTIFUL FILM!!!

All Jokes Aside
Released in DVD by Mti Home Video (13 November, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Harell Smith
Average review score:

Very Funny
Very funny and insightful look at several comics trying to reach stardom. A look into TryFlynn's life as he struggles in the business. His Answering Machine bit is hilarious and the commentary from his ex-girlfriend about the real-life incident makes it priceless. A must have for any real comic fan because stand-up comedy is the only pure entertainment artform. Eddie Griffin makes a great contribution.

Alone with a Stranger
Released in DVD by New Concorde Home Video (24 September, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Peter Liapis
Average review score:

Five stars.....
Alone with a Stranger is one of the best independant films I've seen in a long time. The story line was great and the actors did an amazing job with the film. I was hooked from the very beginning. If you are a William R. Moses fan this is the film to watch. He is so amazing playing Max/James. Nia also does an amazing job. I recommend this for those who don't mind watching a movie with a lot of not so nice words.
