Clubhouse Detectives- A very cute movie!
Clubhouse Detectives is a very cute movie and is a great mystery that will leave you on the edge of your seat! It is about a kid who wakes up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, and from his window, he sees his next door neighbor committing murder. He tells his mom, but she doesn't believe him. Neither do his friends. The only person who does is his little brother, Kade, who also witnesses it, but doesn't tell his brother. Now him and his friends must find proof that the neighbor committed the crime. This movie is full of mystery and adventure! I would definately reccommend buying it! It's a great movie for both kids and adults!

Ryan Merriman in Dangerous Child
I think that this movie is very good. It has a lot of good acting in it and so forth. Ryan did a very good job in this movie when he would get all pissed of and throw stuff...when he looked mad it was kinda scary. He would get all weapy too... This is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. For anyone who likes Ryan Merriman I would suggest this movie. It has alot of suppense too like what's up with him? and what is wrong with him he has problems? or issues as I like to call them.
It shows that there isn't just child abuse kids can abuse there parents too. and it shows what abuse is really like. It's a very good movie... I would recommend that you see it.

Dennis Miller - The Raw Feed
Released in DVD by Warner Home Video (09 September, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: James Yukich
Dennis Miller rolls out a highly polished new act in this HBO special, taped before a live Chicago audience on March 1, 2003. While Miller's social commentary remains rigorously middlebrow, it's his typically loquacious, often elegant, occasionally anachronistic (one wonders what the young, Windy City audience makes of Miller's coiffure reference to "the harmonica player from the J. Geils Band") delivery that makes The Raw Feed worth visiting. Surreal esoterica abounds from the moment the comedian takes the stage with references to the "sequin mines of L.A.," the India-Pakistan conflict as understood through the filter of Jonny Quest, the length of purchase receipts from Circuit City, and suck-up Saudi royalty described as "the Eddie Haskells of the Middle East." The occasional killer line emerges, including Miller's prescription for peace in Israel (give Palestinians the casinos) and a hard truth about nature: "It's like Nick Nolte with a clogged Eustachian tube." --Tom Keogh

An Entertainer With A Brain
Wow. Until his recent comments about the various states of the world at large on Jay Leno, the news and print, I knew him only from Saturday Night Live and Joe Dirt (I realize it's an abomination of a movie but it does have Christopher Walken). Upon reading about his various quips relating to the world today and various entertainers and celebrities constant whining, I knew I had to see his act.

Dennis Miller is a rare breed of entertainer. He talks to you, not at you. He doesn't espouse slogans and chants, he speaks with clarity, reason and incredible wit. Even when he's not particularly funny, he speaks with the mind of someone who; at the very least, is incredibly observant. He completely brushes aside the agendas of the whiny left and the argumentative right and breaks it all down the middle with common sense. He leans in neither direction but instead steps back and views the world from an objective stand point and even when you disagree with him, you still hang on every word because he speaks like someone who thinks constructively and free of the sheepishness of a good number of people. And, to top it all off, he is very funny.

What can I say... I'm sold.

Dennis does it again!
This is one of Dennis's best HBO specials! It contains a lot of new funny material like carobou living in Alaska,Iraq, his kids, and going to church. The people in Chicago are very lucky that he came to their state to do this! But on September 7th Dennis finally came to my state and cracked us up with a lot of the material from this very funny HBO Special. So see this you wont be dissappointed!

The Fight
Released in DVD by Spartan Home Enterta (17 December, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Ziad H. Hamzeh
Starring: Marc Sandler and Linda Amendola
Average review score:

An incredible movie, the 'new' title is deceiving.
I saw this movie in a theater in Hooksett NH and immediately raved to my friends about it. I kept looking for it for a year, eventually receiving information from Marc Sandler the writer/producer/star (after telling him what a great job he did with it) about it's coming release and I picked it up as soon as it became available. This IS Shadow Glories, critically acclaimed (info at [web address]) and the new advertising and jacket are deceiving because it's SO much more than a movie about 'the fight' CJ faces. It's a great character driven story, very dynamic, soulful (to steal fellow reviewer's words), and Marc/Penn's struggle to overcome his own darkness captivated me more than any other aspect of the movie. Incredibly well written, directed, acted. Once you see this film you'll understand my comments, this is far more than your average kick the snot out of 'em movie. I rave about very few movies, this is worth your time regardless of whether you're looking for action or for a powerful character driven story. One of my favorite movies of all time, as well as director and producer (credit also must be given to Hamzeh for powerful direction as well).

Guts, Blood, and a lot of heart
Hold on to your seats boys and gals. The punches in this one will be flying into your living room making you truly feel like you are there. Its an unusual love picture that reaches hights I had not witnessed before. It is not a simple film by any streach of imagination. It is poetic, complex, and heart wrenching. I give it an A plus for the gutsy way it delivers.

Most under rated film of 2002
I was fortunate to see this film on the big screen when it was first released. Brilliantly haunting story that will stay with you for a very long time. The cast was amazing. The direction superb. The music remarkable and the cinematography execuisite. Buy this one with solid assurance it will resurface as one of the great uncompromising films of 2002.

Awesome
This movie is awesome for kids. This movie has a great story to it. An all time favorite to all the kids I know! Give it a shot. Or maybe to shots.

"You call that a soccer ball, I'd rather kick you!!!"
"Come on, lets get him!!!" Flyin Ryan is a totally trippy film. It's about a tinny poor kid that gets a magic pair of heelies tht grant him the ability to fly. He moves to a new town and he does'nt even own a skateboard. Mean, spoiled, rich kids, who own skate boards, are always pestering him and they push him into a lake and then Ryan somehow floats 20 feet out into the lake. "Are you having fun yet?" Sorry if this seems confusing but "my brain must of got a little water-logged in the lake." Ryan and his girl paddel all the way across the biggest lake in california to buy some wheels in an old town. Also ryan flys to, and breaks into a factory to save his dog. Then he ecscapes using a rope. A black belt in karate kicks a kid in the chest, jumps over a motorcycle, and then catches a tenis ball all in a row. It was awsome! Dirk is the best bully I've ever seen in a movie. You have to watch out for the crazy aunt, shes always steling things. It's because she's poor. And also watch for Tobys' magic shirt that changes during the first chase. I am very confused about the many incoherant scenes that would randomly pop in and out. I got to go, "I'm going to take this box upstairs."

Grateful Dead - View from the Vault III
Released in DVD by Monterey Home Video (08 October, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Average review score:

Very unusual second set, good bonus segment.
The Dead's third View from the Vault installment takes us to their home court of Shoreline Amphitheater in June of 1990. These would sadly turn out to be Brent's last Bay Area shows with the band before his death from drug overdose. Like most Bay Area shows, I was in attendance for this one, and it was one of the more unusual shows I saw. The first set is fairly average, but features Truckin' into Touch of Gray and a rare Garcia version of Big Boss Man. What makes this show special is the second set. Garcia experiments with a number of different MIDI effect sounds on his "Rosebud" guitar. Brent is clearly in bad shape on his "We Can Run," forgetting large portions of two verses. Weir lets loose at the end of Estimated Prophet, with his "worry about me no" falsettos, which stimulates director Lenn Dell'Amico to introduce some great video effects. But the really amazing part is that after Terrapin ends, Garcia, Weir, and Lesh continue to jam wildly all through the part where "Drums" would normally be. Eventually, Mickey does move to the big drums at the back of "the Beast," but the guitarists play on endlessly and with great imagination. Though you can't really tell from the DVD, there was a point when everyone left the stage and the music is only carried on by Dan Healy and Bob Bralove. The band returns and delivers a fragile rendition of the rare China Doll, followed by the obligatory Weir rocker, "Sugar Magnolia." There are six first-set bonus tracks from the Dead's first run at Shoreline in 1987, which I also attended. Weir and especially Kreautzmann appear surprisingly younger here for it being only three years earlier. Garcia is generally much more inspired and active, playing on his classic "Tiger" Irwin guitar. During Minglewood, Weir sings, "T for ... wherever the hell we are ... a trash-heap" referring to Shoreline's being built over a landfill. I heartliy recommend this DVD to fans of this later Grateful Dead period, for the strange and beautiful Jam and Drums and Space section of the second set and the contrast between 1987 and 1990 versions of the band.

great show
this show from 1990 is one of brent mydland's final performances and he is in good form (even though he forgets the words to we can't hide), but to me jerry garcia really sticks out in this show. in the 2nd set he just takes over. from terrapin station to china doll, garcia leads the band into a long jam ad at times its almost like he's the only one you hear. i bought this dvd at a the other ones show. i enjoyed the show, but after viewing this dvd, i was reminded of how much garcia can never be replaced. i rate this as the best of the VFTV dvds to be released so far. it is a more solid all around show then the previous. the bonus material is wonderful also. they give us 2 songs (hey pocky way, my brother esua) that wern't frequently played. if you're a fan i'm sure you have it. but if you never saw the dead, this is a wonderful introduction to the live concert they were so famous for.

great video
Brent was alive and well when this show took place. i know i saw him in july of this year just a month after this show. brent's last show was tinley park in chicago in late july he left us a week later. the dead were on fire that summer so this is a keeper.

The Cockettes

A Complete Surprise
As a result of purchasing a used video at a local chain, I saw the preview of this title on the video. Even though I was a young adult at the time, this documentary was a total surprise to me. I knew nothing about this subject, nor had I ever heard any reference to it. Of course I had heard of the "Hippies" and what San Francisco was like at the time.
The interviews with participants, while making this film years later, was fascinating. One can see the devastating result of drugs and AIDS on some of the participants.
I certainly thought it was interesting and very well done. I highly recommend it.

loved it
I saw the documentary at a film festival in London this year. I love John Waters and Divine and this documentary gave me an insight into the times and their wonderful wackiness. ...

Go see the Cockettes
John Waters, Janis Joplin, David Bowie, Elton John, Bette Midler and many others got some of their style and attitude from this local San Francisco theatrical group. It was theater that literally scraped itself up off the streets and onto a stage at the Palace Theater -- and nothing has been the same since. You owe it to yourself to see something here that you will not see the likes of again. The film is beautifully made, historically accurate, and true blue. Don't miss this movie!

Dorothy L. Sayers Mysteries - Have His Carcase (The Lord Peter Wimsey-Harriet Vane Collection)
Released in DVD by Warner Home Video (14 May, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
The great Lord Peter Wimsey embodies amateur sleuthing at its best in Have His Carcase. Dorothy L. Sayers's impeccable plotting, wry humor, and touching fondness for her favorite characters all shine in this perfect adaptation of her novel. Wimsey's special friend Harriet Vane (Harriet Walter), fresh from a murder trial of her own, tries to get away from it all and ends up stumbling over a freshly killed body. Unable to resist a crime (or, for that matter, Harriet), Wimsey is soon on the case. Edward Petherbridge is perfect as Wimsey, revealing his brilliance and allowing him to be hopelessly in love without ever damaging his dignity. Walter plays Harriet with rich nuance, saying as much with her silences as she does with her lines. Most fun is Richard Morant as the astonishingly resourceful Bunting. The mystery spools out over four episodes, and very satisfyingly too. --Ali Davis

Codes and Alibis
Having had her life saved by Lord Peter Wimsey has been a mixed blessing for Harriet Vane. Not eager to cope with his obvious affection for her, she opts for a walking tour of England. On her way to Wilvercombe, a vacation spot for the slightly doddering, Harriet stops on the beach for a picnic lunch and a quick nap. She wakens to discover the tide coming in and a recently dead body with its throat cut on the nearby rocks. Fortunately, Miss Vane, like all good tourists, has brought her camera, and so is able to take pictures of the scene before the tide washes everything away.

Once Harriet has reported to the police, she succumbs to a writer's need for publicity, and leaks an exclusive to the London press. The resulting todo brings Lord Peter to the scene, prepared, with his usual combination of good manners and light-hearted banter to save the day if it needs saving. The police believe the death (of a local dancer) is suicide, but Lord Peter suspects murder. Various plot twists ensue and before long Vane and Wimsey have teamed up to solve what is a particularly devious and repellent crime.

As books, I prefer 'Have His Carcase' to 'Strong Poison,' and the same thing is true to of the BBC productions. This, the second novel in the developing romance between Harriet and Peter, is a much livelier story, from both a plot and a character standpoint. Sayers goes to a great deal of trouble to invent an archetypical British coastal town and people it with an entire cast of remarkable characters. The video manages to bring much of this to life without large quantities of ornate scenery or excess production. This is in contrast to 'Strong Poison' where we are constantly distracted by a historically correct 1930's London. This is a much cleaner performance.

In addition, both Edward Petherbridge and Harriet Walter have settled into their parts and deliver smoothly over a range of contexts. I still do not feel that Richard Morant's Bunter is quite right, but at least I have grown used to it. Good work comes from all, especially the actors who play the Weldon's, Jeremy Sindon and Rowena Cooper. Once again, however, director Christopher Hodson has given in to the need to muck with the ending to provide a romantic segue into the next in the series, 'Gaudy Night.' Sayers developed the Wimsey/Vane relationship in a very controlled fashion and I greatly dislike Hodson's unnecessary tinkering for little purpose. So this video also receives four stars where it should have risen to five.

One of THE BEST TV Series Ever Made!!
Edward Petherbridge is brilliant!!

I recently acquired these DVD's (Strong Poison/Have His Carcass/Gaudy Night) and they are now my most treasured set. The performances by Edward Petherbridge and Harriet Walter are flawless!

This series is a MUST HAVE for all mystery buffs (especially Dorothy Sayer's fans!) For those who were disappointed in the Ian Carmichael series produced 10 years earlier, take heart--you have now found the answer to your prayers!

My only criticism is that there were no more titles produced in this series. I can't understand why they did not continue to make more of these wonderful productions. And furthermore, I can't understand why the BBC took so long to release this series onto Video/DVD. If I had known of the existance of this series sooner, I would have launched a campaign to demand that they make more episodes. Oh well...I guess we will just have to make do with the three gems that were made. (In fact you should probably buy two sets of these, as you may wear out your original DVD's from watching them over and over and over and ...ahem...oh yes back to the review...)

The first two films, Strong Poison and Have His Carcass, are faithful to the books and each is truly a pleasure to watch. The third, Gaudy Night (or "Gaudy Lite" as I have seen it referred to) skimps a bit in comparison to the novel. However, the extraordinary acting on the part of Edward Petherbridge and Harriet Walter more than makes up for this, ensuring that this version of Gaudy Night is a highly entertaining one. This series should have segued into "Busman's Honeymoon." However BBC dropped the ball on obtaining the rites and left us all hanging.

Perhaps it isn't too late for a continuation of this series after all. It has ONLY been 16 years since the last episode. Surely if Ian Carmichael could have the audacity to play Lord Peter Wimsey at his age, Edward Petherbridge could pull it off for at least another 20 years or so (and do it brilliantly I might add!)

Needless to say, I have become an instant fan of Mr. Petherbridge and can only hope I may find more of his work on film. (This is a daunting task since this distinguished stage performer seems to shy away from the camera. Something about acting for the love of the thing and not the money. Oh these serious actors!! By the way, isn't he WAY OVERDUE for some sort of Knighthood or something ...hmm??!!)

WARNING: Ordinary television will seem even more unsatisfactory after viewing these DVD's.

As I said before, you'd better get at least two copies of each of these DVD's (or to be on the safe side, you'd better make it three!!)

(NOTE: It seems that the UK version of the DVD's contain an interview with Edward Petherbridge as a bonus feature. Unfortunately for me, the American version does not. You lucky Brits!!)

Enjoy!

As My Whimsy Takes Me
I never thought I'd see this series again, but miracle of miracles, The Powers That Be have released it and on DVD, no less! I first saw these episodes on PBS in the late eighties when I was entering junior high school. I've been watching those Friday night mystery programs on PBS for as long as I can remember, and no one can top these three adaptations of Dorothy L. Sayer's three most popular Wimsey novels: Strong Poison, Have His Carcass, and Gaudy Night. Absolutely brilliant performances by Edward Petherbridge as my quintessential Lord Peter and Harriet Walter as Harriet Vane. I hope that now this much-loved series will receive the long-awaited praise and recognition it richly deserves.

Fawlty Towers, Vol. 1 - A Touch of Class/Builders/Wedding
Released in DVD by Warner Home Video (16 October, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Directors: John Howard Davies and Bob Spiers
Starring: John Cleese and Prunella Scales
John Cleese has always maintained that Fawlty Towers was inspired by a real hotel that was run by a proprietor who treated guests as an inconvenience to running a business. No one in the world, however, can possibly match the sheer insolence and incompetence of Basil Fawlty, perhaps the most brazenly rude character in the history of customer disservice. "A Touch of Class," the series pilot, finds Basil bemoaning the riff-raff he's forced to deal with when he signs in a Lord Melbury. Immediately melting into an embarrassingly obsequious toady, Basil is blinded by nobility and becomes the perfect patsy for the old con man. In "The Builders," Cleese proves there are no limits to what lengths Basil Fawlty will go to save a few quid. Enlisting a resistant Polly in his plot, he quietly fires the respectable carpenters hired by his wife, Sybil, and brings in a cheap crew with a history of disaster. Sure enough, they wind up walling up the entrance to the dining room, sending an insanely outraged Basil into a frenzy as he tries to correct the blunder before Sybil returns. Davis Kelly (Waking Ned Devine) costars as the genial but incompetent O'Reilly. Basil smells hanky-panky in the air in "The Wedding Party," when he signs in an unmarried couple and soon sees foreplay in every innocent kiss and embrace. Meanwhile, a sexy French antique dealer sends Basil into red-faced vexations with her flirtations and Manuel's birthday results in a drunken binge and a morning-after hangover that only adds to the bellhop's usual incompetence at the morning breakfast service. When Sybil overhears that "The Hotel Inspectors" are in the area, Basil makes an about-face in his brusque treatment of a demanding guest, falling all over himself to cater to the guest's every whim while he boorishly insults every other customer. When he discovers his mistake he makes up for lost insolence in a campaign of comic terror. --Sean Axmaker
Average review score:

just a minor quibble
yes, these shows are excellent. i can't recommend them enough - so i won't. my quibble has to do with the director's commentary. the director's voice comes across as a phlegmy, watery sound effect. then there's the puntuating of long silences with the sluuurping of whatever he's drinking. i have to admit it was funny for 5 minutes, but i then became nauseous and had to turn it off. the shows are worth the price of admission without the director's commentary.

A Much Needed Laugh
Faulty Towers brings laughter and a great deal of relief from a barrage of news which offers nothing but gloom and doom. John Cleese and the entire company can cheer anybody with their farce and comedy. Highly recommend this series to anyone who wants to get a good laugh.

grab a branch and beat your car
john cleese may be the funniest man in the world, fine example of verbal and physical comedy

Feast of July
Released in DVD by Buena Vista Home Vid (02 September, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Christopher Menaul
Starring: Embeth Davidtz and Tom Bell

Purefoy a Delight in Feast
I mainly bought this film to see James Purefoy. Purefoy did a masterful job as the charming yet bossy older brother in his small role. This film was vintage Merchant Ivory in terms of the lovely scenery and great costuming. The film also had a tragic story in rural England Thomas Hardy type quality reminiscent of Tess of the D'Urbervilles and The Woodlanders, eventhough this is not a Hardy story. I'm glad I got the film, but be prepared for an unhappy ending.

feast of july --- my favorite movie that nobody knows
This is an amazing film --- exquisitely executed, shot and acted with a simple story and gorgeous period detail --- both Embeth Davidz & Ben Chaplin are brilliant.
I saw this movie twice in the theatres because it was such a "gem" and then nobody was interested --probably because there were no stars in it --- but see it,,,,it's a tragic and beautiful love story. Pay special attention to the cinematography which is extraordinary.
steven

feast for the heart
This movie is one of the few that made me cry! I was pleasantly surprised to see Davidtz in a more compassionate and warm character than the one we remember as 'Natasha' from 'Bridget Jones's Diary'....the costumes were lovely in this film, and although the character goes through so much burden, she comes out on top with strength and understanding. A touching film that moves the heart.
