Eloise at the Plaza
Released in DVD by Walt Disney Home Entertainment (11 November, 2003)
MPAA Rating: G (General Audience)
Director: Kevin Lima
Average review score:

cute, well written, just like the books..........
This is such a cute movie! The details are exactly like the book. Sofia plays Eloise quite well. Sometimes, I have to get my way! Ms. Andrews plays nanny perfect! DON'T be confused to her other NANNY roles. NANNY is Eloise is THE OPPOSITE then MARY Poppins! All in all, ELOISE AT PLAZA in cute, well written, and just like the books, just with added characters. I recommend the DVD with all the bonus Making of Eloise at the Plaza and How to draw Eloise, plus previews for ELOISE AT CHRISTMASTIME and all the Eloise books. It's great! Eloise, you hate but gotta love her! :-)

Eloise is absolutely Brilliant!
It dawned a rainy day here in Pennsylvania. My five year old woke up with the flu, feeling positively miserable. I reached into my secret stash of Christmas gifts and pulled out the Eloise movie (recently purchased).

Let me tell you, this sweet, funny movie made my daughter giggle, even through her body aches and upset tummy.

This movie is a brilliant, absolutely fabulous. The casting was wonderful. Julie Andrews as a totally different kind of Nanny is funny and warm. Sophia V, the girl who plays Eloise, is hilarious and extremely talented. The Plaza in the 50s comes to life through the colorful, elegant sets.

Get this movie. It is adorable and fun.

I loved this movie!
When I was little, I loved the Eloise books. When I saw that a movie was being made, I was really excited. I made sure to tape it and have watched it many times, but the quality is, of course, not as good as the DVD will be- so I am going to buy the DVD! The casting in this movie is really good- Sofia and Julie Andrews are wonderful.

Home Alone Collection
Released in DVD by Twentieth Century Fox (21 August, 2001)

Starring: Culkin, Linz, M Culkin, and A Linz

Home Alone 1 and 2 *****
Home Alone Trilogy is best thing to own. I'm 16 now I remember watching Home Alone 1 and 2 as a kid best movies I ever saw.. FUNNY, THRILLING, EXCITING! Oh did I say Funny I mean drop dead laughing I still laugh how Marv and Harry took those falls. But one thing still stands? How did they still get up after all those hits... lol Home Alone 3 is ok....I guess. Culkin is way better for the part.. Marv and Harry are part in that comedy...

A classic Christmas trilogy!
HOME ALONE is one of the best holiday trilogies you can own. Now finally, they put together this trilogy box set featuring all three films! My favorite film out of the HOME ALONE trilogy is HOME ALONE 2: LOST IN NEW YORK, particularly because it is the funniest one. HOME ALONE 3 is just okay, and HOME ALONE is a classic. Macualay Culkin was better for this kind of role, but Alex D. Linz was pretty good, too. Anyway, here are the plots of all three films:

HOME ALONE--this is the first classic. This is the film that started it all! In HOME ALONE, an eight-year-old misunderstood kid named Kevin (Macualay Culkin) is left behind at home by accident when his large family leaves on a Christmas vacation to visit some relatives in Paris, France. Then, just as Kevin starts to think being home by himself is so cool, he comes across two dumbwitted crooks named Harry and Marv who are after all the rich and big-looking houses in Kevin's neighborhood to steal all their valuables! Kevin wants the two crooks locked up in jail where they belong, so he sets up all kinds of boobytraps to capture Harry and Marv on Christmas Eve when the two crooks plan to robb Kevin's house! This movie is very hilarious. It never gets boring. I give this part in the trilogy *****[5 stars]

HOME ALONE 2: LOST IN NEW YORK--a lot of people find the first one to be the best in this trilogy, but I actually enjoyed this second one more! It's bigger on the laughs and has more of a crazy, complex plot. Anyway, it's a year later after that incident last Christmas at the MacCallister household. It's Christmas again, and this year, the MacCallister's are planning a trip to Florida. On the day of their flight, they get all nervous because of what happened last time. But they end making sure Kevin is with them. While at the airport (running to catch the plane - again!), Kevin gets separated from his family after getting distracted. He sees someone that looks like his father and runs after home, only this man isn't his father and he's getting on a plane to New York City! Of course, Kevin doesn't know that until after he's there. When he gets to New York City and discovers he got on the wrong plane, he decides to make this seem like his own vacation - and uses all his father's credit cards and cash money (he was holding his father's bag at the airport) to get into this fancy hotel. Life's a ball for Kevin until he comes across Harry and Marv again who escaped jail and now are after a big fancy expensive toy store in New York. Kevin overhears this plot and decides to stop the two crooks once and for all, using a whole new set of boobytraps and schemes. I give HOME ALONE 2 **********[10 stars] because it's the best one!

HOME ALONE 3--I was kind of disappointed with this one, but it is still pretty good. This one is about another young boy named Alex (Alex D. Linz), who is left home alone with the chicken pox. This time, four crooks (including a female) break into his house and it is up to Alex to stop them with the famous boobytraps. I give this one ****[4 stars] because it was okay, but not great or specatular.

All in all, if you love these HOME ALONE movies, then you have to get this DVD collection! All three movies have great acting by the entire casts, good solid funny scripts, and cool special effects. In my own personal opinion, HOME ALONE 2 is the best. But everyone has their own personal favorite! So buy this DVD box set today and you won't regret it!

A collection of all-time classics await your eyes and ears!
I will confess that this collection brings back tons of good memories of my life. From Home Alone 1, all the way to the third. Each film has its own magnificent score. And of course, that score would enhance Christmas time. (And don't forget the hymns please! LOL)

I started watching the first while I was in grade school. I used to be a dummy and think that the violent parts were as funny as they can be. But the humor had died down as time went by. And the second film wasn't as funny, though it had more violence! (And speaking of the second film, I had seen it on one of my most memorable (and yet very outdated) times in my life: my 8th grade trip to Washington D. C. (Boy, I wish I got saved back then, being a Christian.) And that movie will remind me of Washington D. C. every time I see it. I didn't see the third until late 1997. It wasn't about Christmas or Mr. Culkin, but still good.

I watched these films an uncountable number of times when I was in High School. They are good any time of the year.

Each film has its own score. I find the first and second the most magnificent, and a Christmas essential. But the third is still good, though still wintry. (And it had Dean Martin's "Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.) I find "Somewhere In My Memory" the main highlight, with inspiring lyrics, sentimental background, and those magnificent bells at the end make you picture snow on the ground and those trees and houses decorated with lights. I wonder what I'll come up with when listening to Christian Christmas music this holiday season. I'll let you know.

Overall, you should at least give these films a try. And if little kids see this, make sure they don't do the same stuff Culkin and Linz does in these films. (It's all fake anyway!)

Until then, Godspeed!

I Love Lucy - Season One (Vol. 7)
Released in DVD by Paramount Home Video (01 July, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Directors: William Asher, James V. Kern, Ralph Levy, and Marc Daniels
Starring: Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz
Average review score:

Classic if there ever was one!
I've been very impressed with Lucy's talen ever since I saw an episode of this show. I've bought many of the shows for my collection. This one is particularly good.

more classic "Lucy" moments
I LOVE LUCY continues on DVD with the 7th volume of episodes from the historic first season.

"The Gossip" - Lucy and Ethel make a wager with Ricky and Fred about who is the biggest gossip. The wager culminates with the nervous young milkman becoming a part of one of Lucy's kooky capers!

"Pioneer Women" - Lucy and Ethel want to buy a dishwasher, but the boys won't have it. They decide to live as they would in the early 1900's (no electricity, baking your own food, etc) and see who will crack first. Lucy and Ethel love the period clothing, but how on earth will they get through a giant loaf of rye-bread?!!!

"The Marriage License" - To her horror, Lucy discovers on her marriage certificate that Ricky's last name was misspelled as 'Bacardi'. This prompts her to think that her marriage to Ricky was illegal, so she decides to marry him all over again, starting with the proposal!

"The Kleptomaniac" - Lucy is busy gathering and organising items for a big charity auction, but Ricky thinks that she has turned into a thieving criminal!

Starring Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance and William Frawley. The DVD includes restored elements, bonus footage, an episode of the "My Favorite Husband" radio show, flubs and guest-cast information. (Single-sided, single-layer disc).

4 More Great Episodes With The Queen of Comedy: Lucille Ball
I was very happy to see the release of the next two DVD's (Volumes 7 and 8) containing 8 more episodes from the first season of the classic television series "I Love Lucy", which aired on television for six seasons between 1951 and 1957. Lucy Esmeralda MacGillicuddy Ricardo (Lucille Ball), Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz), Ethel Mae Roberta Louise Potter Mertz (Vivian Vance) and Fred Mertz (William Frawley) have more hilarious hijinx occur in the four episodes presented in "I Love Lucy Season One (Volume 7)":

Episode 24: "The Gossip" (March 24, 1952). In this classic "battle of the sexes" episode, Ricky is unhappy with Lucy's incessant need to gossip. To share some vital information with Ethel without speaking, Lucy improvises with charades. Then, claiming that men gossip just as much as women, Lucy & Ethel are challenged by Ricky & Fred to a bet to see who can keep from gossiping the longest with hilarious results. Viewers may recognize the guest actor playing the milkman, Bob Jellison, who returned periodically in Seasons 4 & 5 to play Bobby the bellboy.

Episode 25: "Pioneer Women" (March 31, 1952). This classic "battle of the sexes" episode is often remembered for the giant loaf of bread that attacks Lucy. The premise of the episode involves a $50 bet to see how long Ricky & Fred or Lucy & Ethel can go without using most modern conveniences while Lucy & Ethel are trying to gain acceptance into a posh women's club.

Episode 26: "The Marriage License" (April 7, 1952). After cleaning out their desk, Lucy becomes concerned that her marriage license with Ricky isn't valid; so she insists that the two travel back to the same Connecticut town where they were first married to renew their vows. Viewers will probably recognize a guest appearance by Elizabeth Patterson, who later played Little Ricky's frequent baby-sitter Mrs. Trumble starting in Season Two.

Episode 27: "The Kleptomaniac" (April 14, 1952). In this funny episode, Lucy doesn't want Ricky to know that she's raising money for the women's club that she & Ethel are in by managing an auction. Ricky comes across a large sum of cash in Lucy's purse, as well as her stash of items to be auctioned, and mistakenly concludes that Lucy's a kleptomaniac. Ricky enlists the help of a psychiatrist, played by guest actor Joseph Kearns, who is best remembered for his portrayal of "Mr. Wilson" in the TV sitcom "Dennis the Menace" (1959-1963).

If you are debating whether to purchase any of the episodes on DVD, you won't be disappointed if you are a long-time fan of "I Love Lucy". As with the previous six volumes released so far, picture quality of the episodes is superb; and being able to watch the episodes uninterrupted and uncut is fantastic. I rate these 4 episodes with 5 out of 5 stars.

King of the Jungle
Released in DVD by HBO Home Video (04 February, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Seth Zvi Rosenfeld
Starring: John Leguizamo and Cliff Gorman
Average review score:

Unique characters, fine acting and good story. I liked it.
This 2001 film stars John Leguisamo as Seymour, a mentally challenged young man on the tough streets of New York. He has the mind of a five year old, and yearns to be accepted. His mother, Julie Carmen, a civil rights activist, babies her son and tries to protect him. His divorced father, Cliff Gorman, tries to deny that anything is wrong with his son. Rosie Perez, his mother's lover, tries to help him. And so does a friend, Jeff Rappaport, who tries to teach him to fight and see himself as "king of the jungle."

Seymour's troubled world is shattered when his mother is murdered. That's when everything seems to spin out of control. The story pulled me in and kept me there because I wanted to see how it would all play out. Marisa Tomei plays a small role as a tough detective. And Annabella Sciorra plays the murderer's mother. It's a fine cast and they all do a good job.

I liked the film. It's tight, moves fast, and introduces some unique and interesting characters. And John Leguisamo shines in a difficult role. Recommended.

Spectacular!
I can't think of any other actor who could have played John Leguizamo's character in King of the Jungle; Leguizamo is brilliant yet again. He plays a 25 year old 'retarded' man, Seymour, who lives with his lesbian mother and loves to play basketball. After his mother is murdered, he struggles to find the killer... It's a great story, and I have gained even more respect for Leguizamo... It's great to see him in a small budget made for HBO film. It just proves that he acts for the joy of acting, not money. If you like John Leguizamo or great plots and great acting, this movie is for you. He definately plays the part well; I felt sorry for Seymour.

the jungle - NYC
this movie is great. it conveys the feel of new york city's streets with an excellent 'urban' cast including rosie perez and michael rappaport. john leguizamo has turned out to be an excellent actor as well.

The Good Mother
Released in DVD by Buena Vista Home Entertainment (02 September, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Leonard Nimoy
Starring: Diane Keaton and Liam Neeson
Average review score:

So Powerful, So Wonderful
I was warned before watching this movie that it would not be one of those 'sit in front of the television with a bowl of popcorn' movies. For half of the movie, I just sat there, my eyes glued to the screen, watching Diane Keaton in a simply wonderful and dramatic role.

Anna Dunlap (Keaton) is a newly divorced woman with an adorable six year old daughter. They have a wonderful relationship, and it is very evident when you sit down and watch them together. Enter Liam Neeson. He starts out as a person with whom you would not want to get to know, but after a few minutes, he reveals that he's just in a bad mood and he is actually quite nice. When he first meets Molly (the very adorable Asia Vieira), she is very shy towards him, but she learns to like him and you can see that there is a bond between them. When something happens (I don't want to say what), and Molly's father wants full-time custody of her, the movie becomes a full-blown drama. It is, I admit, hard to watch some of the courtroom scenes, but they are so powerful and they draw you into the story. In a way, I saw the end result coming, but not exactly like it did. It definitely showed finality in the family.

Keaton's performace, like I said above, was incredibly powerful and she does a wonderful job portraying Molly's mother. The main reason I bought this movie was because of Diane Keaton, since she is my favorite actress and this movie shows her in her best dramatic role, in my opinion. If only it had received higher reviews when it came out. But I go by what looks good to me, and to me, this looked good, mainly because of the cast and the story.

Simply a must-see
Being a tremendous fan of Diane Keaton's work, I rented this movie (I'm still... that this movie isn't sold anywhere), and it immediately rated as one of my top-ten favorite Keaton videos. It honestly is an enigma that this movie didn't get enough praise it deserves. Most of the scenes are incredibly sweet, warm, and intimate. That's what makes this movie so great. When Keaton's character, Anna, meets Liam Neeson's character, Leo, there's a unmistakable bond forming. I especially love the scene when Anna goes to Leo's apartment and Leo and Anna becomes one, dancing in front of Leo's sculpture, making shadows on the wall from the light shining on them from behind. This is an esoteric concept of first love. I really thought it was so sweet when Anna confessed to Leo that she thought she wasn't very good at sex, and he gently assures her that they can fix that. There's no judgment in that scene;it's obvious that Leo really loves Anna, and their love is vivid. Another favorite scene is when Anna and her daughter, Molly, are in the bathtub with Leo reading to them. This is truly intimate, and I just love the fact that they were so open-minded about being naked in front of Molly. There's just so much tenderness and love. It was, to me, beautiful. And yet another favorite scene is when Molly has a bad dream and goes into Anna's room while she and Leo are making love, and they comfort her until she falls asleep. There's another display of intimacy, about caring and love. The three of them together was absolutely wonderful. That is why I found it incredibly appalling that Anna's ex-husband, Brian, goes to court for something that happened between Molly and Leo that had absoluely no intention of happening. (I won't ruin the ending for you). But I found the ending truly sad and final. A soon-to-be family are wrenched apart by an innocent mistake. I felt bad, because I knew they could have had a wonderful life together. I also felt bad for Anna and Leo. I could really see their love shown for each other. They were so comfortable together; their feelings for each other were vivid and beautiful. This is a movie of non-judgment and unconditional love, and that's what makes it so special. I honestly don't understand why this movie was considered a failure. Keaton is at her best in this movie, and Neeson is simply wonderful. I consider myself as an efficient movie critic, and I know which movies are bad or good. This movie is a MUST-SEE!!! I acclaim Keaton especially for her wonderful work in this movie. 'The Good Mother' is proof that Keaton is one of the world's most rare and special actresses. If you're not suffering from brain deterioration, immediately rent this movie! You won't regret it.

tenderness
I saw this movie 2 years ago on TV and I was deeply moved by it. I'm looking everywhere to find this movie on video but I haven't found it yet. I also read the book, before I saw the film and I think it's the first time that I like more the film than the book of a same story. I must confess that since this film I became a fan of Liam Neeson. It's a film that sensitive people must see. The scene before the mirror has remained with me all along.

Herbert Von Karajan - His Legacy for Home Video: Dvorak - Symphony No. 9
Released in DVD by Sony Classics (26 June, 1999)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: A. Dvorak
Average review score:

Well Done
The DVD medium and the Dvorak piece serve each other well in this performance. 5.1 sound allows for greater articulation of instruments, despite the 448 kbs bandwidth. The film's editing reinforces this articulation by focusing on individuals or groups of performers during key passages. This is accomplished at the loss of a wider perspective and 'wall of sound' that devotees of a traditional concert might relish. What is gained, in the fusion of audio and video detail, is an appreciation of the roles played by the instruments and a better sense of the structure of the composition.

The power and dynamics of this piece highlight the capabilities of a good system. Properly reproduced, the horn sections are sweeping and the lower register strings and percussion are tightly focused.

Quantitative Evaluation
Audio Merits:8/10; Video Merits:8/10; Cinematographic Merits:8/10; Musical Merits:10/10;Overall Artistic Performance:10/10;DVD Extras:10/10;Recording Total Quality:9/10. Professor's Recommendation: Unique reference including Dvorak scores on DVD medium.

The indian spirit
This another example of fenomenal late Karajan. He really got into the inner aspects of this symphony. My most favorite part is the intentional delay in the low string notes just before the first crescendo in the opening movement. It really gets the american indian spirit like no other version does. The performance is magnificent, almost I would like to see it with the Berliner instead of the Wiener. It seems that at the time Karajan was having problems with the Berliner because of his favoritism to a female clarinetist while the orchestra member said she didn't match (she can be seen performing some Beethoven symphonies in other DVDs of this series). But, coming back to this performance, the Wiener philharmoniker is wonderful and the sound is rich and pure. I you already know this piece, you'll rediscover it in this version. I recommend it.

La Cucaracha
Released in DVD by Fox Home Entertainme (17 December, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Jack Perez
Eric Roberts has been toiling away on the straight-to-video shelf for far too long, as he proves so well in La Cucaracha, a sunbaked Western noir set in Santiago, Mexico. He plays a perpetually soused would-be author escaping an imagined past of murder and mayhem, writing letters in his head that he'll never send and pondering the novel he'll never write. Roused from his inebriation by an epigram-spouting American, he's haplessly enlisted to assassinate a killer for a local drug lord (Joaquim de Almeida). Damned if he does and doomed if he doesn't, he miraculously survives and crawls from a shallow grave: "If I didn't have such a good survival instinct I would have killed myself long ago." Crippled but spurred by his newfound raison d'être--revenge!--he celebrates his self-discovery by munching defiantly on a cockroach. But not the cockroach of the title. That honor goes to Roberts, a scurrying little survivor who scuttles along desert roads in his beat-up wheelchair.

The picture tries too hard to strike a deadpan vein of dark humor and too often lets itself get lost in unnecessary details and side alleys, but the world of adobe buildings and dusty streets is like a film noir by Sergio Leone, full of blood-red sunsets and humid nights. Roberts always strikes the right balance of determination, desperation, and futility, never really winning but, like the cockroach, managing to survive underfoot. --Sean Axmaker

Average review score:

Great contemporary film noir - Roberts can still act
Those of you familiar with Eric Roberts' film work of the 1980s (Raggedy Man, Runaway Train) will not be surprised to learn that he does a superlative job in this indie film noir.

Roberts plays a down on his luck alcoholic American would-be writer, stuck in a dirt-poor Mexican town. When given the chance of making some quick money to "do a favor" for the local crime boss, his life begins a wild downwards spiral.

Despite the subject matter, this film is far from depressing - it's more like a black comedy film noir. Too bad no one ever saw it, otherwise Roberts would be back making Oscar-caliber films instead of toiling in B movies and in sitcoms. The entire cast is teriffic, and the director does a stellar job on a miniscule budget. Buy this film and enjoy it, and tell someone else about it. It's that good!

One of the best films that nobody's ever seen!
I used to be a big fan of Eric Roberts, so took a chance on this DVD, after having read some good reviews. I'm so glad I did - this is probably one of the best performances Roberts has ever given. It's a shame that this movie was unseen and unheard of by most people - it's really a little gem.

Roberts is perfect as Walter Poole, a down on his luck would-be writer languishing in an alcoholic haze in Mexico, who, by a series of chance circumstances, finds a strange new purpose to his life. Unlike some recent indies, this film never substitutes mood for substance. The story is well written, the characters are memorable, and the direction and production are near perfect. The DVD is also visually teriffic, although I agree with previous reviewers that it should have been released in wide-screen.
If you like original, engaging movies that aren't like all the rest, then grab this one. Now if Eric Roberts would just keep making them like this, he'll be nominated for another Academy Award someday!

Down Mexico Way
This is one of the best indie films I have seen in such a long, long time! A fresh and novel approach to film noir, rated by CREATIVE SCREEN WRITER's Magazine as the best film noir in the past few decades! The director has a special talent for taking the low-budget limits and making a BIG movie. Eric Roberts performance is par with his early performances in "Run Away Train" and "The Pope of Greenwich Village". I strongly suggest all film lovers adding this film to their library, as I have seen it in two festivals (winner of BEST PICTURE AWARD in 98' Austin film festival & ERIC ROBERTS winner of BEST ACTOR award in NY International Independent Film and Video Festival 99'). I only wish films like this would appear on the big screen more often.

Larryboy - The Cartoon Adventures - Leggo My Ego
Released in DVD by Warner Home Video (27 August, 2002)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director: Larry Whitaker
Larryboy, the superhero alter ego of the cucumber made famous by VeggieTales, takes animated center stage in this couplet of morally sound yet nonpreachy sagas. In the 22-minute title story, devious carrot the Alchemist and Mother Pearl--his evil onion of a mommy--plot chemical sabotage on the citizens of Bumblyburg. The good citizens look to Larryboy for help, and he's willing, but wants all the credit. His ego not only diminishes the contributions of others, but shrinks them physically. Will he share the glory before he's reduced the entire town to a plate of baby vegetables? In the seven-minute "Cuke of All Trades," the cucumber of steel helpfully agrees to watch two neighboring shops at once, with predictably disastrous results. Young DVD watchers will delight in the extras, which will teach them to draw the mother and son villains, take a pop quiz, and "read" a Larryboy storybook. (Ages 4 and older) --Kimberly Heinrichs

Larry Boy To The Rescue Again
Another nice Big Idea production. Good values, cute story and a reasonable price for a kids video. I'm not as fond of the style of animation - a bit too Saturday morning cartoon for my personal tastes but a nice fill for their normally excellent fare while they were making "Jonah". Larry Boy is a cute character who bumbles about trying to save the world in his own superhero with plungers way. While Larry is a great veggie on his own I tend to miss Bob and the rest of the gang who form a wonderful ensemble comedy team. This series doesn't seem to have quite the ability to enthrall my kids as the others do and they haven't asked to watch it over and over (like Dave & The Giant Pickle etc). But again not a bad substitute until the production company gives us another "classic" video.

*~*AWESOME FOR CHILDREN OF ALL AGES*~*
This Larry Boy cartoon is simply put "ONE OF THE BES!" My 2 year old REALLY enjoyed it. And it kept my 6 year old interest...(he happens to be into super heros!) And my little girl couldn't stop laughing! Fun for the entire family!

My Kids Won't Leggo This Cartoon!
Installment #2 in the Larryboy Cartoon Adventure Series is truly terrific! The villains ("The Alchemist" and "Mother Pearl") are brilliant baddies, whose ... scheme teaches us that our own ego can be our undoing. The look of the animation is great -- this is some of the best classic, "cel" TV animation I've seen in recent years. My kids love the characters "Herbert" and "Wally", and have even tried to reenact their "Operation Jellybelly Floppy Woppy" maneuver. Make sure your carpets are scotchguarded. My family can't wait for Larryboy #3 ("The Yodelnapper") to come out next month!
