A Christmas Wish (aka The Great Rupert)
Released in DVD by Fox Home Entertainment (04 November, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Irving Pichel
Although it's now more of a curiosity and a quaint reminder of a time when movies possessed a quality of innocence that has long since vanished, The Great Rupert was something of a marvel when it was released in 1950. Produced by special-effects pioneer George Pal, who had delighted audiences of the 1940s with his innovative series of Puppetoon shorts, this charming comedy employs Pal's technique of animated puppetry to bring life to the title character--a lovable trained squirrel that comes to the rescue of a down-and-out family of vaudeville performers in the depths of the Great Depression.

Jimmy Durante leads the struggling clan, barely able to pay rent in a converted garage adjoining the home of a man who's been stockpiling lucrative investment dividends in the floorboard between the two homes. From his cubbyhole in the wall, resourceful Rupert has been tossing wads of $100 bills to Durante's wife, who thinks it's cash from heaven! Ol' Jimmy cracks wise with ancient puns and one-liners, making this a treat for Durante fans looking for squeaky-clean family entertainment. And once he's saved the day for all involved, furry-tailed Rupert goes back to his own vaudeville gig with his devoted owner, played by another veteran of vaudeville, Jimmy Conlin. It's all a bit too sweet by today's tarnished standards, but The Great Rupert stands as a testament to George Pal's optimistic spirit and creative imagination, which would later bless the productions of such films as The Time Machine and The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao. --Jeff Shannon

Can't wait for the release!
I often watched this movie on Christmas with my children and more recently with my young grandchildren because it touches the very essence of the Christmas season. I've always loved Terry Moore from her serious and not so serious movies (especially Mighty Joe Young) and of course Jimmy Durante is a clown that everyone loved and loves.

I personally feel The Great Rupert should have been produced originally in color and released as a Christmas movie. I'm so I'm so happy to learn it is now considered a Christmas classic and is available in color. Can't wait to see it in color and listen to Terry's commentary.

Re-discover this Jimmy Durante Christmas Classic
A Christmas Wish is a heartwarming holiday classic that truly captures the magic of Christmas. This well-written film combines a genial underdog (Durante) whom you can't help rooting for, an inspiring tale of young love, unforgettable comedy bits by Durante, and an irresistible guardian angel who saves Christmas.

The film has a touching love story between Terry Moore (Mighty Joe Young) and Tom Drake (Meet Me in St. Louis). Rupert the Squirrel (created using George Pal's Academy Award winning puppet animation technique) will charm young and old alike. Jimmy Durante shines when he sings Jingle Bells and other Christmas Carols.

Originally titled "The Great Rupert", this film has been restored perfectly and is being released in color for the first time. It looks absolutely beautiful. There also is an engaging special DVD commentary by star Terry Moore (secret wife of Howard Hughes). If you've already seen It's a Wonderful Life and are looking for something charming and new for Christmas, this is the film.

This Film Is A 100% Must-See For The Whole Family!
You'd Know Why I've Given This 5 Stars, After You've Seen This!
To MAke The Long Difficult Plot Quick, Rupert Helps 2 Poor Families Overcome Their Obstacles. GREAT FILM! I RECCOMEND TO ANYONE WHO WOULD LIKE A GOOD LAUGH AND A GOOD CRY!

Incrediably Heart Warming
This movie is so incrediably touching. Its also very realistic to peoples everyday lives. It givs a great sense of hope that no matter what the situation is, everything will work out. Campbell Scott ad Kimberly Williams were phenominal together. This movie is filled with so much love that I think we sometimes take for granted in everday lives.

Touching and Warming Movie
I first saw this movie when it came on T.V. I work with children and adults whom have special needs and to me this movie was so enlighting. It made me realize that a moment should never go unwasted because you don't know what tomorrow will bring. Kimberly Williams and Campbell Scott were both spectacular. It is a movie of truth, hope, dispair, and so much love.

I'm a straight guy...and even I liked it
I'm a "Enter the Matrix" kind of guy, but even I liked this movie. It is a very sensitive movie about 2 women trying to make the right decisions about their bad relationships, and how they are able to cope with their troubled daughters.

Great movie to watch with your kids. Buy it!!!

Gardens of the World with Audrey Hepburn
Released in DVD by Goldhil Home Media (28 April, 1999)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Bruce Franchini

Wonderful
I ordered this series because I am an avid Audrey Hepburn fan. The candid footage of her in England and Holland was a joy to watch. I also found myself very entertained by the wonderful Gardens shown as well as the historical info on gardening, different types of gardens (Zen, Flower, Formal, etc), and the interesting information on the development of flowers. A+

Devine intervention
Yes! Yes! Yes! I just got it, and it is wonderful! It is good and it is worth it coz you see Audrey being herself. And there is a great special feature about her...on location in UK behind the scenes, which is at least 20 min long. You get to see her wonderful and infectious personality and she wins you over all over again. She does an episode about Rose Gardens, and little does she know that she outshines the Rose. She also quotes a line from a poem: "O Rose! who dares to name thee?"
Well, I say..."O Audrey! who dares to name thee?"
Is that enought to tempt u...?
Lol. Well, I am not a huge gardens fan, but i enjoyed this series alot coz she made it fun and interesting to watch

Enjoy this DVD over and over.
Audrey Hepburn is charming, Michael York narrates, and the filming is stunning. Features gardens of the world. Favorite sections are the roses and public gardens. After watching several times, didn't realize that the DVD flips over to play the opposite side. You can also play the classical music that is used in the filming. Highly recommend this DVD.

Seriously......the movie was good.
Take my word for it. It was a great movie. Actually all the Pokemon movies were great. What happened a few years ago to Pokemon was that many people (especially adults) didn't quite understand a few of the earlier movies released a few years ago. This movie was really well developed even for a non-Pokemon audience to understand. I rate it 5 stars for a good reason. I'm sure this movie will satisfy ALL audiences.

WOW!
This movie was quite a pleasent suprise! I have known about Pokemon ever since it started here in the U.S. I didnt really like it a ton, but this movie made me! It was just so great! The storyline was great, the picture was great....it was just overal wonderful! My Mom (I just turned 14) even said it was good (TRUST ME-That means something)!

I really think the movie would've done a lot better if there were more advertisments. I found out about it by literally going onto a theater site, and seeing what was playing. Also the fact that it was only a limited release movie, that people didnt know about it.

But, I hope there are commercials and previews for the Video and DVD Release. That will help a lot!

Thanks so much for taking time to read my review! :)

Delightful surprise
This picture was sharp, fast paced, quite funny and touching. It also looked fantastic. It had a wonderful, ambiguous ending whose meaning my wife and I debated for a while. It's not Miyazaki, but then what is?

My kids, who are pretty discerning (they love Miyazaki), think it's the best of the Pokemon feature films.

I'm getting sick of big name celebrities doing voice acting for animation--it takes me right out of most animation. Having the TV folks do the voices is the right decision.

Not quite sure why there was a theatrical release, since the only marketing support was tiny newpaper ads. Too bad--I think a lot of people would have liked this one...Well, they will on video.

Sex and the City - The Complete First, Second, and Third Seasons
Released in DVD by Warner Home Video (21 May, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Starring: Sarah Jessica Parker
Sex and the City is based on Candace Bushnell's provocative bestselling book. Sarah Jessica Parker stars as Carrie Bradshaw, a self-described "sexual anthropologist," who writes "Sex and the City," a newspaper column that chronicles the state of sexual affairs of Manhattanites in this "age of un-innocence." Her "posse," including nice girl Charlotte (Kristin Davis), hard-edged Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and party girl Samantha (Kim Cattrall)--not to mention her own tumultuous love life--gives Carrie plenty of column fodder. Over the course of the first season's 12 episodes, the most prominent dramatic arc concerns Carrie, who goes from turning the tables on "toxic bachelors" by having "sex like a man" to wanting to join the ranks of "the monogamists" with the elusive Mr. Big (Chris Noth). Meanwhile, Miranda, Cynthia, and Samantha have their own dating woes.

The second season builds on the foundation of the first season with plot arcs that are both hilarious and heartfelt, taking the show from breakout hit to true pop-culture phenomenon. Relationship epiphanies coexist happily alongside farcical plots and zingy one-liners, resulting in emotionally satisfying episodes that feature the sharp kind of character-defining dialogue that seems to have disappeared from the rest of TV long ago. When last we left the NYC gals, Carrie had just broken up with a commitment-phobic Mr. Big (Chris Noth), but fans of Noth's seductive-yet-distant rake didn't have to wait long until he was back in the picture, as he and Carrie tried to make another go of it. Their relationship evolution, from reunion to second breakup, provides the core of the second season. Among other adventures, Charlotte puzzles over whether one of her beaus was "gay-straight" or "straight-gay"; Miranda tries to date a guy who insists on having sex only in places where they might get caught; and Samantha copes with dates who range from, um, not big enough to far too big--with numerous stops in between.

The third season was the charm, as the series earned its first Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series to go along with its Golden Globes for Best Comedy Series and Best Actress (Parker). One of this season's two principal story arcs concerned hapless-in-love Charlotte and her pursuit of a husband; enter (if only...) Kyle McLachlan as the unfortunately impotent Trey. Meanwhile, Carrie has a brief but memorable fling with a politician who's golden, but not in the way she anticipated. She then sabotages her too-good-to-be-true relationship with furniture designer Aidan (John Corbett) by having an affair with Mr. Big (Chris Noth), who himself has gotten married. Like I Love Lucy, the series benefited from a brief change of scenery with a three-episode jaunt to Los Angeles, where Carrie and company encountered, among others, Matthew McConaughey, Vince Vaughn, Hugh Hefner, and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Sex and the City
... "Sex And The City" is one of the BEST television series ever to grace the screen. The first 3 seasons are especially great. Brilliant television at its best. Thank you to all who have worked so hard to bring truly intelligent, funny, touching and integral television back with an edge that reminds us we're not children anymore. Television is evolving and "Sex And The City" is a series that will be remembered as being one of the first to break new ground and bring integrity back to TV.

Some of the best television ever made.
I am in my mid-thirties and I can't tell you how many episodes of this show get me all choked up. I don't think this happens because I'm grieving over the loss of my youth, my single status, or city living, but because I remember how the pain of being single felt. I think the writers are great at expressing the complexities of female emotions through the 4 main characters. I can see a bit of myself in every one of them (no wonder men find us confusing). The one episode that got to me the most was the baby shower in Connecticut. I felt I was watching someone walk into my life in suburban heck. Although I never want to return to the single life again, I can't wait for the day to ditch the house in the burbs for downtown living.

If you haven't seen the show, I highly recommend purchasing/renting them all. Remember, it is HBO programming so the content is much more graphic than most R rated movies but probably closer to real life than most people will admit to.

Thank God For Sex & The City!!
When Sex and the City (SATC) premiered on HBO a few years back, it took a while for it to catch on. But once it did, there was no stopping it. SATC is one of those pop cultural phenomenons that everyone had to see coming, but no one was prepared for. Easily one of the top comedies on television, SATC follows the lives of four trendy, funny, upper class single gals in New York City as they date and sleep with what seems the entire male population of New York City. Each episode we're treated to their chat sessions, where they discuss their philosophies on dating and secrets about the men in their lives.

One of the great things about SATC are the characters. Each main character is very different from the others. Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) is a journalist, who writes a sex column (called Sex and the City of course) for the New York Star. On a weekly basis she takes inspiration for the lives of herself and her friends and poses questions in her column such as: "can there be sex without politics?" and "can we really have it all?".

Her three best friends come in the form of: Miranda Hobbs (Cynthia Nixon), an independent and somewhat cynical lawyer, but with a soft side to her too that she sometimes lets us see, Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) a promiscuous and extremely confident PR agent, and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) a rather more refined and shy woman who works at an art gallery and is always on the lookout for a husband. It could even be said that the 'fifth' main character is New York City itself. The city plays such an integral role in the show that you really feel you are there.

If you like irreverence and bawdy humor, SATC is a must. Highly recommended!

Discover Bellydance
Released in DVD by Goldhil Home Media I (11 February, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Average review score:

Sensual, fun, and a lot easier than I thought it would be...
I purchased the DVD set (not having ready any reviews) wanting to learn something new, have fun doing some sort of exercise, spice up my sensuality, and really to try to bring my body back to some sort of shape four months after giving childbirth.

I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED!

I really enjoy this DVD set. The lessons are fun to learn with several movements much easier to learn that I thought they would be (like shoulder shakes and body shimmies) I didn't feel like any of the moves were impossible to master. You're working out while you're learning and having fun at the same time.

One bonus for me is that my four month old son enjoys watching lovely Veena and Neena dance while I follow along (looking silly right now). So I can get in my physical activity without waiting for him to nap.

I look forward to the time I can show my new talent to my husband, which I have no doubt he will enjoy. Until then I'm going to keep practicing, practicing, practicing, with Veena and Neena.

The extra dance videos are fun to watch and really get your imagination going. They show the different forms of belly dancing there are out there. The costumes are lovely (and inspiring)and so are the ladies performing them. I've gotten several good ideas as to the type of costume I would like to make for myself.

If you decide that to buy this DVD set, I doubt you'll be disappointed. It's fun, lovely, and tastefully done.

Best instructional bellydance videos
Neena and Veena are fabulous instructors. There are three videos included: Basic Dance, Beyond Basic Dance, and Mystic Dance. If you are deciding between VHS and DVD, I strongly recommend the DVD. The DVD has some great bellydancing extras on it, including some fitness bellydance examples. You can choose having the instructional voice on or off.

My one complaint about these videos revolves around the instructional voice, which is not always in sync with what Neena and Veena are currently doing. If I'm not paying attention, when I'm learning the steps, I can get frustrated by that, as I tend to listen to the voice more. (habit left from dancing and aerobics)

I LOVE the videos. These are the best bellydance instructional videos I've tried. The camera focus is almost perfect - when small movements are occurring (say with the wrist), it's focussed on the wrist, or if there is a bit of trickier footwork - focus is on the the feet. Otherwise, it's mostly a whole body shot - which is much better than many of the other bellydancing videos.

Instruction starts slow - I like how they teach arm positions for you to be able to experiment. The progression from slow to tempo does occur a little fast, but it's allowed me more enjoyment of the video because it has been a little more challenging. It's not too difficult!

The steps all come together in the end with a choreographed dance, which is great fun. The videos definitely build skills from one to the other. Once you've practiced a few times, and are getting the dance routines down, you will be getting a workout!! My arms already look totally different, and I have more hip flexibility than I use to.

These videos gave me enough experience to feel confident enough after three weeks of (secret) practice to give a dance to my husband. He thought I'd been taking lessons on my lunch break. (and no, he's not suave enough to have just come up with that!) :)

Fun and energizing exercise, with an element of sensuality - for what more could I ask?

Excellent
This set is particularly valuable for the beginning dancer who is more interested in learning the technique than in a workout video or weightloss. (Of course it is good for these things, too.) The focus is on teaching the basics of dance and putting everything together into choreographies that you don't mind showing off.

Heartbreak Hotel
Released in DVD by Buena Vista Home Vid (03 September, 2002)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Chris Columbus
Starring: David Keith and Tuesday Weld
Average review score:

One of the best Elvis impersonations ever!
It's 1972 and Johnny Wolfe(Charlie Schlatter) and his band prepare for a performance for a talent show at their high school. His mom Marie(Tuesday Weld) is a die-hard Elvis Presley fan. So to "make her happy",Johnny and his buddies "kidnap" Elvis(David Keith) after a concert via an anesthetic, and drive him to the Wolfes' home. It was there when Elvis awoke. Johnny wanted Elvis to stay so his mom can meet him(Elvis). Elvis subtracts 16 years off his life. He shaved off his big heavy sideburns and wore an outfit that he regularly wore in 1956. Johnny told Elvis,"My mom says you looked the coolest in '56!) Marie had returned home from the hospital after being severely beaten up by her drunk and physically abusive boyfriend(Chris Mulkey). She finds "young" Elvis at the top of the Wolfes' staircase, playing guitar and singing one of Marie's favorites,"Love Me". A shocked Marie changes into a beautiful dress and invites Elvis to stay for dinner. Johnny's little sister(Angela Goethals) is so afraid to sleep in the dark until Elvis convinces her that doing that is not scary. Elvis even redecorates the Wolfes' home and in the process, discards Johnny's rock band posters. At the talent show,Elvis appears with Johnny and his band backing him up. Then Elvis' band of bodyguards fly to Elvis' whereabouts so he can go on with his touring elsewhere. Elvis was like a husband to divorced Marie and a father to Johnny and his sister. At one point in the film,Johnny beats up Steve,Marie's boyfriend, revengefully("You stay away from my mother!") At another point, while returning from a grocery store,Johnny is later beaten up by Steve and a couple of Steve's buddies in front of a bar where Steve and his buddies were shooting pool. I dedicate this film to the memory of Elvis Aaron Presley(January 8,1935-August 16,1977). HEARTBREAK HOTEL is strictly fictitious and is no way based on actual events that occurred during the real Elvis' life. The film was directed by Chris Columbus, who also wrote the story and screenplay. Columbus also directed ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING,a year before this film.

GREAT
My wife bought this movie used from a video store preveiwed for $$ many years ago. When she saw I had found it on DVD she was delighted. We watched it together (I have said no way for 10 years) We BOTH enjoyed the movie.

Good... but Kieth sounding and looking like Elvis?
I love this movie. Its a great feel good movie. And while other reviewers here have stated that Kieth sung ALL the music in this movie... is simply NOT TRUE. He did sing some in it... like the scene where he is coming down the steps. BUT... if anyone thinks he sounds like ELvis then they haven't listned to Elvis that much. If anyone thinks he sounds better than any impersonator... I would ask for you to listen to a man by the name of Doug Church.

I have been an Elvis fan for a VERY VERY VERY long time. Kieth doesnt look anything like Elvis... however, as one reviewer stated, he DOES capture that essence superbly. He does a great job in this movie all things considered.

This movie can be enjoyed by Elvis fans and non Elvis fans alike. ITs a good, humorous story with a feel good ending. It does Elvis justice and leaves you wishing that this had happened.

A Home of Our Own
Released in DVD by MGM/UA Video (22 May, 2001)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Tony Bill
Starring: Kathy Bates and Edward Furlong
Average review score:

Must of been unadvertised
I had never seen any promotion for this film when it came out. I am a Kathy Bates fan and was switching channels and happened across this. I started watching it and loved it. I wonder why I had never heard any word of mouth on this movie? If you haven't seen this, please either rent the movie or buy it. It is worth the time to watch it.

It is basically about a family whom is living in LA and the father ups and leaves them. So the Mother must support her children. Her oldest keeps getting in trouble so she decides to take what little they own, and find a new home to restart their life. Mind you they are very poor and they vehicle they own is on it's last leg. They end up in Ohio living in a farmers half built home. It lets you see through the oldest son's memories of everything that happened along the way.

You end up loving the family and hoping for the best. I hope you watch it!

Wonderful movie
This movie is a wonderful drama. Kathy Bates plays a mom who one day decides to leave the city for a better life. She finds the perfect house: a half built "shack". From then on the family goes through many trials, but she goes from having only her family being close to... well I don't want to give away the movie. just see it.

Excellent By Far
The Lacey clan as the mother calls her children. Poor and fatherless living in the city find a new world and a home of their own in the country. A story of a stubborn, strong woman trying to raise her children and build a foundation. I absolutely loved this movie, and can compare it to no other.

Homicide Life on the Street - Season 3
Released in DVD by A & E Home Video (28 October, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Ned Beatty and Braugher
If the first two seasons introduced one of the great television crime dramas, Homicide really came into its own during the third. Instead of the mere 13 episodes scattered between 1993 and 1994, NBC ordered up a full 20 for the 1994-1995 season. The entire terrific cast is back, with the exception of Jon Polito, whose absence is explained in the fourth episode ("Crosetti"). There are other changes, like the addition of Megan Russert (Isabella Hofmann) as shift commander. Aside from the fact that the mostly male staff now has a woman to report to (alongside Yaphet Kotto's Lt. Giardello), it turns out that Russert has a "history" with one of the detectives. Homicide always excelled in its exploration of racial and office politics; now sexual politics would become a bigger issue. Religion also comes to the fore as Pembleton (Andre Braugher) is finally forced to confront the loss of his faith while working on a case ("The White Glove Murders") involving several aid workers (episodes 1-3). Meanwhile, his partner, Bayliss (Kyle Secor), is coming to resemble the naive young rookie of the first two seasons less and less by the second... while getting to enjoy a little more romance than the rest of the squad--especially the hapless Meldrick (Clark Johnson). But all is not sturm and drang. Humor still finds a place in each episode and Munch (Richard Belzer) still gets many of the best lines. In the season premiere ("Nearer My God to Thee"), for instance, he tells Bolander (Ned Beatty), "There is no such thing as gratuitous sex. Gratuitous violence, yes... Sex cannot and will not ever be gratuitous." He could be describing Homicide itself, in which nothing is ever gratuitous, especially the sudden loss of human life, which is never--and should never be--treated lightly. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Homicide is a WONDERUL show minus sub-titles.
Homicide is one of a few DVDs that I will keep once I watch it. What a wonderful show. I am just answering the question about subtitles. That's the ONLY reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars - no subtitles! And for those of us that like OR NEED subtitles - it's a real disappointment. But that's the ONLY thing that will let you down about this wonderful show.

Spectacular! Keep them coming!
Favorite all-time drama now blissfully available in my DVD player whenever I want! But I do wonder what's going to happen when they get to the Law & Order cross-over episodes ... will we only get the Homicide half? Or will they work out the tricky licensing issues and give us both halves? Please, A&E! Work it out! For the benefit of the fans who gladly gave up more than a few Friday nights over the years!

Great Show
Does anybody know that if the season 3 DVD set has text captions? The captions were missing from the Season 1&2 DVD. Thanks!

Audio/Video not in sync and missing episodes
i have a few issues with this dvd, first of all the audio is not in sync with the video,so the peoples mouths are still moving even after they spoke. This is very annoying,i dont know if i have a defective dvd or if its like that for everyone, ill probably exchange it next week to see if its like that after the store gets more instock, since i got the last copy in the store.my other issue is the dvd skipped over a few episodes.if the audio and missing episodes were fixed i would have gave this dvd 5 stars,

Funniest and classiest "talk show" recently on TV..
This show is great....seeing old tv stars from Gilligan's Isle, Batman and ChipS being interviewed by a campy-cartoon super-hero is fun...The funniest thing is when Zorak, during the Erik Estrata interview, justs starts yelling--"may the power of PONCH compell you!!!" A cartoon praying mantis with attitude, a super hero and a cartoon cameraman makes for clean humor, nostolgia and getting to see familiar faces on the tv is funny in my book---To me, this show certainly blows away any of those shameless, self-indulged reality-garbage tv---when in doubt, tune in to the CARTOON NETWORK!

Essential
If I could only have one television show for the rest of my days...yes, yes it would be SGCTC. To everyone who THINKS they have a 'unique sense of humor': the DVD has finaly come to put you all to the test.
