Linda Richman - I'd Rather Laugh
Released in DVD by Fox Lorber (10 April, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Linda Richman
Yes, this is the Linda Richman, the mother-in-law Mike Meyers made famous in his "Coffee Talk" skits on Saturday Night Live back in the 1990s. But she's not dishing about Streisand in this PBS special. Instead, she deals with some serious issues ranging from depression to agoraphobia. Subtitled "How to Be Happy Even When Life Has Other Plans for You," this 75-minute lecture outlines Richman's less-than-happy life. Her father died when she was 8, her mother was eventually institutionalized for depression, she married a chronic gambler when she was 19, she became housebound for 11 years, and then after recovering she lost one of her two adult children in a car accident. But Richman manages to find humor in her life as she addresses the audience while strolling about the "living room" set. She offers homespun advice, all self-tested, on how to wallow in misery and then get on with life. Richman is a compelling enough speaker that the camera wisely stays with her, making for mercifully few audience shots. She recounts conversations from her life, tells stories about her friends, and even includes an anecdote or two about her daughter and that famous son-in-law. --Kimberly Heinrichs

I'd Rather Laugh
This is one of the most touching books I have ever read. I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Here is a book about a woman who managed to overcome tragic adversities, and has the will to come out on top with an amazing attitude . This book was heartwarming and a fast read. I wholeheartedly recommend it. I would give this booK * * * * *

A RAY OF SUNSHINE IN THESE DIFFICULT TIMES
I WASN'T SURE I COULD FIND MY SMILE DURING THESE DIFFICULT DAYS FOR OUR COUNTRY. I RECALLED SEEING LINDA RICHMAN ON A T.V. SHOW, SPEAKING ABOUT HOW SHE HAD LEARNED TO LAUGH AGAIN. I DECIDED TO ORDER HER BOOK TO SEE IF SHE HAD ANY INSIGHT WORTH SHARING. FORTUNATELY, I FOUND THE FUNNIEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ. ALONG WITH A GUIDE TO LIVING JOYOUSLY UNDER INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES, LINDA MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD. I SURE HOPE SHE INTENDS TO KEEP WRITING. I FOUND MYSELF WISHING THERE WERE MORE PAGES TO DEVOUR. BRAVO MS. RICHMAN. KEEP 'EM COMING. 5 STARS AND THEN SOME

How Delightful!
I watched this special on PBS and had to buy it to keep and watch over and over again. Linda Richman is some kind of special lady, and her tape makes so much sense. Linda makes you feel like she is talking directly to YOU, giving you homespun advice about how to cope when life throws you a bunch of curve balls. Linda doesn't cry in her beer; she has risen above the complexities and hardships of her life and become a better person for it, and wants to share her knowledge with you. This tape will make you feel like a million bucks!

Think twice
I was surprised. The video reminds me of a B movie, with cheesy music, poor voice quality and poorly dressed actors. The excercises move quickly and certainly warm a person up. The ab work is good. Its not what I expected.

AWESOME!!!!
All I can say is...FINALLY!
A fun, upbeat, sexy, and great yoga workout. These tapes work. My boyfriend loves watching me do the routines, and I feel so good afterwards. I never liked yoga before, but Jaquie (the instructor)really does a great job of keeping you relaxed, no pressure in doing the difficult moves, etc.I used to feel uncimfortabl after work, all stiff, etc. Now
my posture is better, and I look forward to sex!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

i got it
well it ok but its real easy!its stupid click back and see what think abot bellydancing it tones your body, makes you more flexible and if you do it longs enough you lose WEIGHT!

A joyful, expressive, ladylike exercise
This is a wonderful dvd workout. It's almost strange for me to say workout, it is hula, it is a beautiful dance. It does takes some getting used to, but the women dancing the hula have so much joy in them, it relaxes you and makes you feel like you can just laugh off your mistakes. If practiced regularly it definetly conditions and strengthens your muscles, especially in your legs!!!

I would reccomend this dvd to anyone!! Kick boxing and Tae bo can be so violent and aggresive excersises, hula is graceful, alluring, and great for toning.

You will enjoy your new toned body and beautiful expressive dance from practcing Hula!

Tai Chi Fundamentals: For Mastering Tai Chi Basics
Released in DVD by 5 (19 February, 2003)
MPAA Rating:

Not enough instruction
Mostly you see the woman doing her Tai Chi, you don't receive much instruction. It is hard to see her feet while she is standing in the grass and in front of mirrors that cut her reflection off just below the knees.

Excellent instruction, great DVD
For anyone looking to learn the basics of tai chi form and movement, Tricia Yu's DVD is perfect ... her instruction is clear and beautifully demonstrated in the DVD. You get both a front and back view of all movements, which really assists in learning the form! This particular form (Fundamentals) is also great. It focuses on the basic movement patterns of tai chi and really helps beginners (and experienced tai chi practitioners) learn proper alignment and refine their form.

The Total-Body Yoga Workout: Lower Body, Abs, and Upper Body Yoga for Beginners
Released in DVD by Living Arts (26 September, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Living Yoga succeeds in re-creating its superb yoga programs for DVD with the three-in-one workout The Total-Body Yoga Workout, which combines the individual body part programs on one disc.

The first workout, Lower Body Yoga for Beginners, led by Suzanne Deason, is a fun, short routine that will help you to invigorate and stretch the lower body in a series of flowing postures, working to stretch, tone, and challenge one's muscles and balance. In the second segment, Rodney Yee leads Abs Yoga for Beginners, which is designed to firm and strengthen your abs while providing a soothing respite from your hectic lifestyle. The poses are, for the most part, simple to follow, although the beginner may need to ease into some of the positions. Finally, Yee leads us through Upper Body Yoga for Beginners, a workout that will stretch, strengthen, and energize the upper body. Yee flows through poses designed to develop an open, supported chest, which in turn promotes healthy circulation, breathing, digestion, and posture. For all of these programs, a firm blanket to sit upon is needed.

The extra features on this disc are the same as those on The All-Day Yoga Workout. Once again, the DVD format is ideal for a workout program--the chapter search makes it easy to skip the introduction and jump right into the body work. Or if you're short on time and just need to relax, you can move directly to the meditations. An extra feature, "Learning the Basics," has pictures of every pose with written instructions on how to do them, which is just the thing for beginners who feel befuddled when told to do a cow-face pose or gate pose. A section on props explains how to use straps, bricks, and mats in order to modify more difficult poses for less limber bodies. Finally, the interviews with Suzanne Deason, Patricia Walden, and Rodney Yee round out the DVD, making for a full program. This is the ultimate introduction to yoga; it's a workout regimen that's easy to incorporate into your daily life and fun enough to convince you to stick with it. --Jenny Brown

Yoga for beginners?
It may seem to some that I have rated this a little low; however, it is due to the fact that the dvd is presented as one for beginners. I am sure that these routines are a cakewalk for the more seasoned veteran, but they are certainly not for true beginners. I am a fairly flexible person, and I could not even get into a proper downward facing dog, much less the rest of the postures the lower body instructor zoomed through. I will stick with my beginner pilates routine for now and perhaps revisit this dvd in the future when I have gained more muscle tone and flexibility (I hope). Otherwise, I suggest it be retitled.

Be on your toes
I took a Yoga class at my gym for about a year and a half. My mom bought this DVD for me for christmas. They change the positions to quickly, it was not relaxing at all. You are supposed to hold your position for a least a minute. You really need to be on your toes for this video so don't expect to be relaxed when it's over. I found it to be very annoying and haven't watched it since.

An energizing yet relaxing sweat!
This DVD is filled with YOGA workouts for all aspects of the body. I have never done YOGA before and was able to easily follow instruction and was well on my way to health and wellness. YOGA is a low impact excersize but you sweat as if it were high impact, and the relaxing meditation at the end of the workouts are refreshing.

Love Can Seriously Damage Your Health

A Film that Touches Upon Life With Wit and Picardia
I enjoyed this film over the holidays. It stars an the Spanish actress Penelope Cruz who manages to steal my breath away with her refreshing non-hollywoodish beauty. In the beginning, there was the Beatles and there is scene where she almost touches them- a real image of the beatles is used (i'm assuming from the 1965 era)...she steals into John Lennon's suite and plans to give herself to him but ends up hiding under a bed with the bellboy who she will casually encounter over the rest of her life; even as she loses that refreshing charm to become increasingly borgoueis and very much likea hollywood has been...the film captures the change and then returns to that refreshing beauty once more for a brief surprise towards the end...the film is charming, ful of wit and picardia; and should provide refreshing viewing from those tired of thetypical blockbuster rental...

THE WAY WE WERE
Written and directed by Manuel Gómez Pereira in 1996, LOVE CAN SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR HEALTH is a spanish comedy presented by Vanguard in its original widescreen version with english subtitles. Only a trailer as bonus feature.

Santi and Diana first met under John Lennon's bed in Madrid while the Beatles were giving a press conference in a 5 star hotel. Over the years, the couple will meet again a number of times but their life together will not exceed a full week in a 30 years period. Santi and Diana are madly in love but who knows whether their love would have lasted so long if they had the opportunity to live together.

Four actors playing two characters, a couple of eccentric secondary parts and a few really hilarious scenes could persuade you to buy or rent this DVD. I've liked very much the first part of the movie that gives to Penélope Cruz the opportunity to create the character of a young hysterical Beatles fan. The director perfectly recreates the 60's with tricks that could have appeared in Robert Zemeckis' FORREST GUMP or Woody Allen's ZELIG.

The second part of the movie lacks of the energy distillated by Penélope and Gabino Diego. In my opinion, with 30 minutes less, the movie would have been a perfect romantic comedy. But LOVE CAN SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR HEALTH still is a very good surprise for the curious movie lover lost in the wide choice of the available DVD's.

A DVD zone Penélope reserved shelf.

Cute and Romantic...........

Intimate Loving: Massage For Lovers
Released in DVD by Koch Vision Video (22 January, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Intimate Loving and Lonnie Barbach
Average review score:

Not the best
Slow moving. Poor quality video. Not complete technique on either male and female. There must be something better!

Poorly done
Cheap production and vague script. Soft core scenario doesn't help or produce any sparks. I sent it back and will look further for a good massage DVD. Disappointing.

A lot of fun
I got this DVD as a surprise for my fiance. I did a lot of research before hand on different videos. I wanted one that was sexy, but tasteful and informative. This video definitely fits the bill. All the subjects are fully nude but it is still informative and instructional. My only criticism would be that it moves a little fast. And it seems to detract from the overall experience a little when you or your lover have to keep hitting pause to keep up with them. You will, however, learn a lot of great massage techniques and the lucky recipient will receive a relaxing full-body massage. You are first walked thru a complete back and leg massage. Then you are taught a very thorough frontal massage that literally ranges from head to toe. This was a lot of fun for both me, as the giver, and him as the receiver. I can't wait until it's my turn to be the receiver!

Don't look here if you want the Adam Sandler-Jack Nicholson theatrical feature. This "Anger Management" is a 21-minute instructional DVD. Perhaps Sandler could have used this before he had to see Jack...

Mindfulness & Meditation - Stress Reduction / Mindful Parenting
Released in DVD by Wellspring Media (05 December, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
The tranquility that comes from moment-to-moment awareness is the theme of this double-program DVD from the author of the bestselling book, Wherever You Go There You Are. In "Mindful Parenting," author Jon Kabat-Zinn interviews three families, who discuss their relationships, play violin, work jigsaw puzzles, and breastfeed in clips that elaborate on his points. Kabat-Zinn's insights may not be any more earth-shattering than such common-sense wisdom as: treat family members with the same patience you would use at the office. Still, he offers a welcome nudge to many an overtaxed parent. As he says at the end of the program, we all know how to do this, we just don't remember to do it. In "Stress Reduction," he takes viewers to his Massachusetts Stress Reduction Clinic for demonstrations of sitting, prone, and standing meditation, as well as testimonials from stressed-out patients who found some peace through his program. He also takes viewers on a hike through the woods, discusses Henry David Thoreau's Walden Pond, and quotes James Joyce. He gets a little more down to earth with a study the clinic conducted augmenting ultraviolet light therapy with meditation for psoriasis patients. Kabat-Zinn's manner is soothing, his attitude is one of gentle prodding, and the visuals are beautifully produced--making for two 51-minute chunks of serenity in a hectic world. --Kimberly Heinrichs

meditation
This dvd was informative from Jon kabat zinn and he explains why we go through the stresses of everyday life.
The only disdvantage of this cassette is that you are expecting a full meditation class. It shows you a few brief techniques but is more focused on the interview with him and a meditation class he runs at the institute he runs.
However it is interesting to listen to the points he makes.
