Beautiful and Easy to Follow
I had been practicing the Yang short form from Tricia Yu's video for the last 6 months. I'm very excited to have it on DVD format because I can jump to the exact section I want to work on. It's easy to follow and the scenery is so beautiful that it's hard not to be inspired. Also, the music is lovely and Tricia's voice is very calming and encouraging.

Finally a documentary that tackles this issue, that can affect all of us, with a common sense approach. The film was packed with industry experts from many disciplines. A true must see for anyone who owns, rents, or works in an indoor environment.

This is some good advice!
This DVD, which I got after seeing the PBS special, had good, simple advice that made sense and definitely helps. It didn't recommended bizarre pills, foods, or exercises, which I liked. Try it.

Aromatherapy With Valerie Ann Worwood
Released in DVD by Wellspring Media (26 December, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Valerie Ann Worwood
While this video may be titled Aromatherapy, it's as much about self-massage as it is about treating yourself with essential oils. Valerie Ann Worwood is an excellent guide to the benefits of aromatherapy--using scents to soothe and heal--for the whole family, and the sections on how to give yourself a massage are alone worth the price of this tape.

Worwood begins with the mixing of oils. The video sleeve contains a guide to which oils work for specific desired results (for instance, lemon oil is good for the body and soul, for use as a sedative, and for increasing concentration), and she mixes a few concoctions to illustrate. She then moves on to first aid, healing cuts and burns, stimulating aching feet, and helping a young child fall asleep. Next is aromatherapy in beauty regimes. The face massage is soothing, and she claims it will help release tension, increase circulation, improve texture, and revitalize the face. Scents in baths and showers follow, and then the section on stress, tension, and self-massage. The self-massage is demonstrated slowly enough that it's easy to follow. Who needs a masseuse? With Worwood as a guide, you can calm the aching muscles of your shoulders, neck, arm, breasts, hip, back, and bottom all by your lonesome (note: there is a bit of nudity in the demonstration). She finishes the video with environmental perfuming--scenting your living space. Warning: after viewing this video you may go overboard on purchasing the oils. But at least you and your home will be pleasingly aromatized. --Jenny Brown

Great Introduction
This video provides enough information to begin working with essential oils. Several blends are suggested so that anyone can use the tips in the video. The sections include mixing and blending (very weak section), first aid (good, but very basic), beauty (mostly massage), baths and showers (basic), stress (lots and lots of massage), and aromatherapy in the home (no real information here).

There is a lot of information about self-massage that takes up a great deal of time in the video. I didn't really need to watch a woman give herself a complete body massage.

The small chart that is supposed to "give all the information you need" is small and hard to read and says very little about blends of oils.

This video is only and introduction, and it is very general.

Aromatherapy For Life.
Ms. Worwood outdoes herself in this creative video. Being one of my favorite authors on the subject: "The Complete Book Of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy," and "The Fragrant Mind, Aromatherapy for Personality, Mind, Mood, and Emotions," she brings her knowledge, wisdom, and years of experience onto the video screen in this wonderful and informative production. This video is a must for beginners, and experienced alike. It is great to read about various techniques, but even more so to actually see it being demonstrated before your eyes. It would be an excellent teaching aid for the classroom, and small group preasentations.

The sections of her preasentation are at the right length that they don't overload the viewer with too much information, and allow one to watch the video in increments if desired. I especially enjoyed the sections on "First Aid," "Beauty," and "Self Massage." I was not at all offended by the brief nudity in this last section of the video, as my feeling is that it is a natural fact of life (not shameful in any respect), especially in light that this is a healing arts preasentation with techniques demonstrated in a mature, sober, but yet very enjoyable format.

Being one who uses aromatherapy in every facet of life (as a spiritual discipline) and in my profession, I value a video like this very highly, and would recomend it to anyone interested in this fun and exciting art.

Informative and enjoyable
This is a great video, especially for those just beginning an interest in aromatherapy. Ms. Wormwood's voice is very pleasant to the ear and she begins by demonstrating how to blend a few esential oils. She goes on to demonstrate and discuss the various uses of essential oils - medicinal, relaxation, massage, etc. A very interesting and instructive segment is a model demonstrating a self massage using essential oils. (I never thought about giving myself a massage, so I tried it and found it to be a soothing experience). This video is educational as well as relaxing to watch. You may find yourself wanting to experiment with essential oils right away.

Massage Therapy for Professionals

For Beginner's Only!
I was very disappointed with the DVD. I purchased it relying on the previous customer reviews. This is extremely rudimentary! If you have any sort of formal training - even as little as 100 hrs - this will seem like a Kindergarden class. For those of you who have attended school, please do not waste your money on this video/dvd. The technique shown is very basic Swedish (and very little of that!) with a couple of Shiatsu/acupressure points. The medical terminology and anatomy sections cover about what I learned my first two days in massage school. There is a short section about aromatherapy which gives so little information I wondered why it was even included.
For Professionals? Maybe - but only if you've never had any training or if you haven't read any books on the subject.

A Professional Who Appreciates A Professional Approach!
I'm a professional who, due to my own illness has had to step back out of the business for a few years. This DVD brought me up to speed to where I can comfortably step back into the business with confidence. The instructor showed me several new techniques and strokes and reviewed the anatomy which I had forgotten.

I am able to watch this in the comfort of my home and have given several massages since receiving and watching it.

I'm back up to speed - thanks to you. It's a great DVD and I highly recommend it to both professionals and those just wanting to know how to give good, healthful massages - which are good for EVERYONE!!!

Dr Phil says Tell It Like It Is....
This is a great DVD and I think that I benefited immensely . The instructor in the DVD obviously has the experience of years of teaching and has prepared many students to take state certifications tests. He helped "refresh" me with anatomy along with muscle and bone structure. As a certified massage therapist, I found this DVD useful as I've watched it over and over and feel that I'm a better massage therapist because of it.

Even if you're not a professional, you'll benefit and be able to give a darn good massage by knowing "the points" where clients carry their stress and know how to eliminate that stress.

Medical science shows us that there are multiple benefits to massage therapy. Everyone can and should benefit from this massage DVD.... no matter what your level of expertise.

Thanks for this DVD. I highly recommend it!

Live Long, Live Well with Robert Pritikin
Released in DVD by Wellspring Media (08 May, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Nathan Pritikin's son--and director of the famed institute launched by Dad--begins this lecture by claiming to love pizza and high-fat ice cream. But the viewer quickly learns that Robert Pritikin hasn't strayed too far from his family's low-fat roots when it comes to how he actually eats. His calorie-focused program concentrates on ways to fill up without filling out (eat smaller meals more often, eat fruit and vegetables alongside carbohydrates, and such). He recommends daily exercise and offers opinions on high-protein diets (thumbs down) and the absence of heart disease in France (a myth). This 78-minute talk before a (mostly svelte) audience also includes some intense medical information. Pritikin takes the trouble to explain how salt affects organ function and the medical difference between good and bad cholesterol. He also expounds upon heart disease and adult-onset diabetes, citing the most recent medical studies and throwing in a little anthropology as well. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Interesting and Informative
I saw this video and immediately thought that it would make a good gift for some of my family members who stuggle with their weight. The video is really well done and Dr. Robert Pritikin presents well. Pritikin covers a lot of interesting information in the video. The topics that registered the most with me were the ones on how the human body reacts to surgar, and the tips on how best to develop an exercise routine. The video confirmed a lot of the advice that I have received over the years from other people.

excellent information
Robert Pritikin talks about the benefits of a low fat, whole foods diet and regular excercise.

My mom loves her massages!
My mom has rhumatoid arthritis and she's in pain most of the time. I hate to see her suffer so I bought this DVD and I give her the gift of love. I give her soft, gentle, loving massages.

I love my mom. She's done so much for me and this is just something I can do for her to make her feel better.

Sometimes, I just massage her hands, sometimes just her feet or shoulders. It isn't always an all over massage, but the few minutes I can give her and slip in a mini massage here and there is worth it. She knows I care!

This DVD showed me how to do it. It's great. Thanks for doing it in laymans language. It was well worth the money and I appreciate your prompt delivery.

Absolutely the Best Basic Massage Video
This takes you step by step through the basics of learning massage therapy - just as if you were in the class room. I sat through the actual class back in 1996 and I would have loved to have had this tape. I bought this tape so I could use it as a refresher course because I love to give massages to my honey and he loves it so much - it comes back to me in many other ways. (he does dishes almost every night and I don't even have to ask him to grocery shop).... He is VERY appreciative!!!!

I urge you to make this small investment in your relationship and you will reap unbelievable rewards.

It's a very good production and a very good price!

Two are better than one!
The Basic DVD is one everyone should have as a part of their library whether their just begininning or an experienced professional.

I use it as a refresher course from time to time, but I have clients that want to give their significant other a nice treat for their birthday or just a nice gift from time to time at home and are a little shy about getting started.

I loan them this DVD and they feel that I'm giving them a wonderful gift. So I have a couple of these on hand. This simple gift of lending brings my clients back to me time and time again.

Thank you for this DVD. It's great!

Inspiring Moments for soothing stress relief / WAVES: Spiritual Journeys

The ocean scenes and sounds are fine. However there too many breaks in the tape with words slowly scrolling across a black screen. What is worst is that during the tape they give their website! Not my idea of relaxation. Waste of $.

"Full of Inspiring Moments" Video Librarian-Nov/Dec 2000
"Greg Voevodsky's shots of waves and wildlife on California and Hawaii beaches and headlands were - as advertised - full of inspiring moments. Comprised of six 11 minutee segments (faith, courage, hope, commitment, peace and love) distinguishable not only by the quality of the water in each segment, but rather by the secular and spiritual quotes from classic text and authors, ranging from the Biblic to Einstein, the 5th Volume of the Waves series offers pristine shots of crashing waves, swaying palms, and glorious sunsets... The crisply recorded natural sounds and super sharp soothing images presented here should have wide appeal (especially to those in land locked middle America). Other titles in the series (without quotes) include: Hawaiian Dreams, Hawaiian Zen, Californian Dreams and Californian Zen. RECOMMENDED." - Reviewed by R. Pitman, Video Librarian Magazine, Nov/Dex 2000

Naturally Peaceful Beauty and inspiring wisdom
I love to lay back in my favorite chair with a good book, play my favorite Enya CDs and have "Inspiring Moments" play on my DVD. Suddenly, I am transported to my own private Hawaiian beach. The soothing rhythm of the surf blends nicely with my CDs drowning out the traffic and children outside. It's nice to glance up turning a pageand enjoy a lovely sunset and the shimering golden waves on my TV.
There are six 11 minute Day segments ending in sunsets and well themed. Starting with Faith, Courage, Hope, Commitment, Peace and ending in Love, the waves change from large California waves to lapping Hawaiian waves. If you don't like quotes try the original series: Hawaiian Dreams, Hawaiian Zen, Californian Dreams, Californian Zen. They're all wonderful and make great gifts for people- especially anyone who is hospitalized, sick, grieving or in emotional pain. It's a sure way to cheer them up and help them relax naturally.

The All-Day Yoga Workout - A.M., Stress Relief, and P.M. Yoga for Beginners
Released in DVD by Living Arts (16 November, 1999)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Rodney Yee and Patricia Walden
Living Yoga has created an exceptional yoga DVD with their three-in-one All-Day Yoga Workout, which combines three of their most popular programs. The first workout is A.M. Yoga for Beginners, a 15-minute morning set led by Rodney Yee. In the morning, Yee tells us, "the body is rested but stiff from inactivity." The stretches he demonstrates are designed to increase circulation, improve mobility, and bring clarity to your mind. The movements are easy to follow (they include a conscious relaxation, the a.m. workout, and a guided meditation), and the set is short enough that it can be squeezed into the most hectic of morning schedules.

The next set is Stress Relief Yoga for Beginners, led by Suzanne Deason. This 20-minute practice, during a sunset on the beach at Maui, will help relax your mind and muscles--especially those of the neck, shoulders, and lower back, where tension accumulates--and let stress drift away. The yoga practice includes 4 minutes of gentle stretch, a 13-minute stress-relief workout that increases circulation and flexibility, and 3 minutes of deep relaxation to leave you calmed and balanced.

The final workout is P.M. Yoga for Beginners, filmed at Death Valley and led by Patricia Walden. This 20-minute evening routine is designed to quiet the mind after the stress of the day and to help you make the transition from active to quiet. She uses a combination of a centering series, standing poses, forward bends, and restorative poses to help you ease into night. These workouts are perfect for the harried and the beginner, and you will need some props (a yoga strap, a brick, a mat, and some firm blankets).

The DVD format is ideal for a workout program--the chapter search makes it easy to skip the introduction and jump right into the body work. Or if you're short on time and just need to relax, you can move directly to the meditations. An extra feature, "Learning the Basics," has pictures of every pose with written instructions on how to do them, which is just the thing for beginners who feel befuddled when told to do a cow-face pose or gate pose. A section on props explains how to use straps, bricks, and mats in order to modify more difficult poses for less limber bodies. Finally, the interviews with Suzanne Deason, Patricia Walden, and Rodney Yee round out the DVD, making for a full program. This is the ultimate introduction to yoga; it's a workout regimen that's easy to incorporate into your daily life and fun enough to convince you to stick with it. --Jenny Brown

Average review score:

Not that great ...
I recently rented this DVD. Thought I would try before I would buy. I enjoy Rodney Yee's AM section. His voice is calming and it's very relaxing but he doesn't hold the poses very long. Suzanne Deason's voice is annoying and she is like "Speedy Gonzalez" ... waaay too fast to relieve any stress. Did nothing for me. Patricia Walden's PM was too difficult. Again, too fast! She doesn't tell you how to change the positions. I didn't find it very relaxing. I'm happy I only rented this.

I love Rodney
Rodney's am Yoga warm-up is the best thing about this video. He has such a calm, soothing voice, and this yoga stretch is a great way to start your morning. It's not particularly challenging, but I don't think that's the point--it's just a great way to get loosened up and ready to start the day. The other two work-outs are fine--I find the evening one a bit too strenuous for a before-bed workout--it gets me too energized, but I think it would make another good morning work-out. It's just too bad Rodney doesn't feature in all three segments--then I would give this five stars.

Great to use for your home yoga practice!
I have studied yoga for 2 years and use this DVD to supplement for my home practice. It is a great value these 3 workouts for this price. They are each 20 minutes long with a warm-up and relaxation. The AM works on you gently getting you energized for the day. The stress-relief works the shoulders to relieve the daily stress you carry there. The PM is slightly more vigorous and tires you out a bit. The only one I have difficulty watching is the PM because Patricia is in the desert and the wind is blowing and it looks HOT! My favorite is the stress relief, so I disagree with the other reviewers. I find Suzanne to be an excellent instructor. The workouts are very quick and just perfect for before or after work. The section on props is great for beginners. If you are a beginner most likely you will need props because you can't reach as far and they help you get deeper into the pose. For this tape you need one brick, a belt and a mat.

Power Yoga the Complete Workout - Stamina, Strength, Flexibility with Rodney Yee
Released in DVD by Living Arts (29 August, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Meditating on a white sand beach as the clear blue water rolls toward your peaceful body is what Power Yoga is about. Yoga master Rodney Yee leads this three-part workout against the backdrop of grassy fields, deserts, and beaches. Each of the three segments focuses on the mind-body connection while increasing flexibility and learning the basic (and the difficult) postures of yoga. These 25-minute segments can be done in sequence for an overall body challenge or (if time is a factor) divided into individual workouts. The first session concentrates on stamina and introduces the sun salutation with attention to breathing and body awareness. This portion is less physically demanding than the two that follow and would be ideal for beginners or participants who crave relaxation. The second segment makes strength the focal point through a series of cross-legged lunges and more strenuous postures. Yee challenges the upper body here by incorporating a variety of arm balances and more difficult poses within the sun salutation. The third and final workout centers on power movements that utilize major muscle groups. This is a great format for advanced participants because the poses are more physically demanding and require greater flexibility to hold. Yee gradually increases the difficulty, which allows for optimum form and range of motion. Each of the three sessions concludes with meditation that is both calming and restorative. The variation of intensity makes this collection perfect for beginning and experienced yoga students alike. Overall this total body workout is designed for those who want to strengthen both mind and body. --Olivia Voigts
Average review score:

NOT a "complete workout"
I have been practicing yoga (primarily astanga/power yoga style) for a little over a year, and while I think that the individual segments are fairly good, do not buy this DVD expecting to replicate a traditional 1.5 hour power/astanga yoga practice session. The "complete workout" is merely the linking together of the 3 half-hour workouts, so you will have to fast-forward through the intermediate cool-downs and warm-ups if you want to maintain a regular pace and the internal heat that is key to this style of yoga. And even if you didn't have to fast-forward, you would still have the problem of the poses not being in the proper order--you go through the beginning sun-salutation poses with each segment. It's overall very annoying and NOT a good substitute for going to a proper power yoga class.

I will say that each segment on its own is quite good, and it is of course convenient that you can do a 30-minute practice at home when you are pressed for time. But, in case it isn't clear, my main complaint with this DVD is that it's billed as being four programs in one--the three short, and one long--but I don't think that there is a true "complete workout" option as advertised. Because I think the title of the DVD is very misleading (I bought the DVD because I wanted the 1.5 hour session), I gave this DVD a lower rating than I would have otherwise. Depending on your needs, however, this feature of the DVD may not be problematic for you.

Beginner's Use Caution - Overall Great Tape
If you are truly a beginner to Yoga, you may want to start with another tape. With other tapes, you might find 3-4 people demonstrating poses for different levels of flexibility and strength. This tape has a very quick pace and offers no suggestions for levels other than what Rodney Yee uses. There was little or no mention of how much one should feel. As a result I overstretched my hip flexor the first time out (stretching too fast, and too much). At that point I re-approached this tape, doing it in segments until I found what worked both safe and comfortably for me. It also helps to familiarize yourself with the tape and listen rather than watch. At times his actions differed from his direction. With all that said, I LOVE this tape now, but approach with caution if you are a total novice. "Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss" with Suzanne Deason is good for showing how you can do particular poses at your level of expertise, they use 4 women each doing the routine with different supports (blocks, towels, ropes etc).

Great for intermediate to beginner practioners
This DVD is broken up into 3 workouts, stamina, strength, and flexibility. The majority of the poses are beginner level (especially the stamina workout),each workout ranges from 20-30 minutes long. For a total workout do all 3 consecutively. I have been practicing yoga for 2+ years at least 5-6 days a week, and this DVD still gets plenty of usage. I think this DVD is challenging enough for intermediate level yoga students (check out some of the arm balances Yee demonstrates in the strength workout) yet easy enough for a beginner to try. However, Yee's workout is not for the faint of heart, the pace is fast (especially the second and third workouts), and you will sweat. Also, watch the DVD before you follow along with the routines, because they are fairly fast paced. So, if you want a good sweat, definitely give this DVD a try.
