Innovators (Live in Concert)
Released in DVD by Pinnacle Music Group (22 August, 2000)
MPAA Rating:
Starring: Kurt Bestor and Sam Cardon

One of the Top 5 Music DVD's Available
Having first heard the music of the Innovators back in 1996 on a WordPerfect promo CD, I was pleased to find a DVD of this incredible music in concert. This DVD is much more than just concert footage of some beautiful music. There are so many extras on the DVD that you wonder why the big studios can't do the same. There is narration before each song, an audio commentary by the Bestor and Cardon, a "you be the director", and much more!
About the music... If you are not inspired by this music, you must be already dead. Each piece is unique. It has it's own musical style. Each has passion and energy. It is a mixure of jazz, new age, and classical. This CD has always been on my Top 10 list, and now I can add the DVD to that, as well. Highly Recommended!!

Magnificent Home Theater Concert
I received Innovators as a gift. I never realized my home theater could SOUND so amazing. They have really put all the channels to good use.

I'm also really enjoying the music. It is eclectic, international and covers a broad range of styles. It is something you can listen to over and over again.

The concert is extremely well produced with a cast of dozens, all kinds of instrumentalists and singers. Very impressive.

The added dimension is that each song is about a particular person who changed the world in some "innovative" way. The back stories are very interesting.

Most of the DVD's in my collection are movies and I find I don't tend to watch them more than once. With this kind of a concert video, I can enjoy it over and over again.

the "big name" studios should look to this as an example
Innovators has now made its way to DVD, from a recording of the show originally made for broadcast on public television. If the program itself were to have been transferred without additional material, this would still be a worthy purchase, but in keeping with the theme of the work, the release is worthy of the description "innovative." A complete multimedia experience, Innovators makes creative use of DVD technology, providing not only a wealth of educational supplemental material, but also a unique and interesting method for accessing that material.

If the eclectic, rhythmic, jazz/rock fusion stylings of the duo are to your taste, this is a disc that you will undoubtedly want to add to your collection. This disc, video quality aside, is a shining example of DVD technology used to its fullest potential, from the menu design to the powerful soundtrack, and stands as a point of reference for all future programs of this nature.

Love: The Forever Changes Concert

Arthur Lee ROCKS!!
It has been great to listen to his revitalized music!! Not much more to add, but wholeheartedly support, to what has already been said.

A treat for Love fans
I saw Arthur Lee and Love live twice in 2002 (once in San Francisco & once in LA) & despite the fact that Arthur was somewhat hoarse at one show & limping from a bathtub accident at the other, they were both outstanding, high-energy shows that left me very well-satisfied. The concert on this DVD was very different (though no less satisfying) than either of those shows - due to the addition of strings & horns, the fact that Arthur's voice was much stronger and purer, and that the band was much tighter and more in control.

In Dolby 5.1 surround (& yes, played LOUD), the sound quality is superb - crystal clear & very lush. As a matter of fact, except for the audience's very enthusiastic response, it sounds more like a fine studio recording than a live show. And while it's not a note for note replication of the classic Forever Changes album, it comes very, very close. Though "You Set The Scene" has always been my favorite song from the original album, I found "The Red Telephone" to be the most moving & spirited song on the DVD. It's remarkable that the tag lines - "They're locking him up today & throwing away the key, I wonder who it will be tomorrow, you or me?" are so chillingly resonant in light of the "Patriot" Act and the current anti-terrorist hysteria.

The visuals are fine - nothing flashy or especially innovative, just a document of the show done in a very straightforward way that complements the honesty of the music appropriately. As far as the bonus materials go, the extra tracks are mostly very good (though I found "7 & 7 is" to be a little too low energy, which is a shame for such a fierce, powerful song), the interview with Arthur (primarily about his youth & early days with the original Love lineup) provides some insights into a very unique & creative talent, & the tour documentary gives us a perspective from the other folks involved (the band, their manager, etc.). It would have been nice to have included some audience reaction too, but that's a very minor quibble.

Who would have thought that Arthur Lee could come back after more than 30 years, find the perfect band and treat his longtime fans to such an incredible recreation of his masterpiece? Forever Changes was one of the most beautiful, honest & creative works to come out of the psychedelic era and this DVD gives it fresh new life. A must-have for any fan & a great opportunity to discover a unique talent for those unfortunate enough to never have experienced Love before.

You Gotta love LOVE
Forever Changes is forever in our hearts. Yes, us LOVE fans are still out there and thank Arthur for his making this all possible. And, my heart goes out to Bryan MacLean and Johnny Echols and DC and all the musicians lost to us in time ....... this one's for you.
Arthurlly yours, A LOVE FAN FOREVER

Marc Anthony - The Concert from Madison Square Garden
Released in DVD by Sony/Columbia (01 January, 2010)
MPAA Rating:
Starring: Marc Anthony
Average review score:

Release it already!!!
(...). It may be the best salsa concert of all time and I have been wanting to own it for two years!! With cameo appearances by Ruben Blades and Tito Puente, failing to release this dvd is clearly hurting Anthony's chances of being the dominant salsero of thsi generation. It is precisely this kind of failure to address public demand that causes us to rush to (...) instead of to empty music stores.

The Latin Frank Sinatra!
Simply one of the most gifted singers of our modern era, Puerto Rican singer Marc Anthony has become the bonafide star he rightfully deserves to be. Every artist's dream is to play an arena as big and famous as New York City's Madison Square Garden, and just like a wish granted, this New York bred singer got his wish.

The former RMM recording star (now signed with Sony Discos) is amazing as he captivates his audience in this special that was televised live on HBO in 2000. Singing some of his classics in Spanish and new hits in English, Marc truly is a glowing presence on stage as his fans, both male and female, are energized and moved by his gift of song.

This DVD captures the intensity that Marc Anthony can only provide onstage. Whether you're a fan or an avid listener to salsa music and/or Spanish ballads, "Marc Anthony - The Concert from Madison Square Garden" is a must see. Gifted, blessed, and talented are the words I can use to describe this artist and this performance.

Ohne Filter - Musik Pur: Robben Ford & The Blue Line in Concert

This is Unbelievable!!!
I bought this for my husband who is a musician and he cannot say enough about this DVD. The way it's put together, Top Quality & with Robben Ford & The Blueline, Hey what more is there to say.
Thank you so much for this. Keep up the Superb Work. We Love It!
Can't wait to get some more of them. For any other fans out there. This is what you call MUSIC!

Want to watch the best blues guitarist alive?
Then buy this DVD!

Robben Ford is in top form on this April 7th, 1993 Germany performance, captured here in impeccable DVD quality. The fantastic trio of Robben on guitar and vocals (his vocals are NOT a weakness - as so many "critics" might mislead you; instead, it is strong, soulful, emotional...), Roscoe Beck TEARING IT UP on either his Fender 4-string, or his 6-string bass (on which he breaks a string during a solo!), and Tom Brechtlein grinning away as he masterfully backs up this tour de force on the drums.

This is the only complete live performance of Robben Ford available for sale on a video format, and luckily for us it is available on the DVD format with its sonic and visual superiority.

I promise that anyone who appreciates good guitar, and/or good blues will greatly enjoy this concert, as it showcases Robben Ford and The Blue Line at the pinnacle of its sound.

Great musician, guitarist
I just received the Robben Ford DVD yesterday. I've been a fan of Robben's for over twenty years. He's done stints as a guitarist with Jimmy Witherspoon, Charlie Musselwhite, Joni Mitchell, the Yellowjackets and the great Miles Davis, to name a few. As a guitarist myself, I am awed by his talent and musicality. He is often labeled as a fusion guitarist, which is somewhat of a misnomer. While quite fluent in the jazz medium he is at heart a bluesman. Once again this DVD is taken from the Ohne Filter German Televison show. The mixing and sound quality is great. Robben uses his band The Blue Line here. It is a trio consisting of Roscoe Beck on bass and Tom Brecchtlein on drums. Both are superb musicians. The show is from 93.Robbens playing is incredible and incedniary. His voice while not quite on a par with his playing is pleasant and easy to listen to. My only complaint is It's a bit short, just eight songs but still well worth the price of the DVD. If you are a fan of postmodern urban blues, this DVD is a must have.

Yolanda Adams Live in Concert - An Unforgettable Evening
Released in DVD by Bmg Distribution (VI (11 June, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Yolanda Adams
Lordy lordy, there is some serious testifying going on here. What's more, the titles ("Let Us Worship Him," "Just a Prayer Away," "The Battle Is the Lord's"), the setting (a Washington, D.C. church), and the febrile audience response leave no doubt that Yolanda Adams is a gospel singer. But this two-hour program (including interviews that can be viewed separately) has a decidedly contemporary feel. The music has the sound of commercial R&B or smooth jazz; the influence of artists like Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway is readily apparent; there are costume changes and a light show; there's even a video (for "Gotta Have Love") that can only be described as hip-hop. That's not to say that Adams plans to go the route traveled by Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and others who made the transition from the pew to the pop charts. But one thing is certain: this ain't your grandmother's church music. Glory hallelujah! --Sam Graham

New Year's Concert in Vienna
Released in DVD by Uni/Deutsche Grammophon (20 November, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Carlos Kleiber
The television broadcast from Vienna of the New Year's Day concert has attracted to the podium across the past 40 years or so a number of starry conductors, but none more so than Carlos Kleiber. In this 1989 concert, he brings to life the music of the Strauss family in an extraordinarily vital manner. The program blends favorites like the waltzes--"Accelerations," "The Blue Danube," and "Artist's Life"--with less common pieces like "The Dragonfly" polka in which Kleiber's arm at one moment seems to be drawing the insect's flight path! There's one break from tradition in that there is no dancing in this film. Director Brian Large knows the music inside out, providing close-ups at key moments such as the lovingly shaped introduction to the "Artist's Life" waltz, which begins with a breathtakingly played account of the opening tune on oboe. Play this at the end of a weary day and be transported to another world of unadulterated musical luxury. --Adrian Edwards
Average review score:

Class of its own.
Truly inspirational playing. A match made in heaven. The VPO and Kleiber.
This concert oozes élan and consummate artistry on a level hard to imagine. Must be seen to be believed.

95 Minutes Of Straussfest
Listening to the CD of this concert was my intro to the New Year's Concerts of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, so this particular one has special meaning. Not surprisingly, it is also my favorite. Now that the DVD has been released, one can see and experience it! Both the sound and picture are crisp and beautiful - the only way you could improve them would be to have the DVD in DTS format, but the DVD looks and sounds excellent!
The selections presented in this concert include some of the Strauss family's best-known pieces along with some that you may not know. Still, no better orchestra to perform them than the Vienna Philharmonic. Their playing is spectacular, and as conductor, Carlos Kleiber enjoys one of his finest hours here (a feat he would later repeat in the 1992 concert.)
These New Year's Concerts performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra are works of art in themselves! Of course, there's no substitute for seeing one live in person, but sitting back and experiencing this DVD in your home theater comes very close!
I highly recommend this DVD to anyone who is either fond of the music of the Strauss family or of good classical music, period. Now, in closing, I have just one question: when will the rest of the New Year's Concerts be released and made available on DVD?

The best DVD of a VPO New Year Day concert.
Stunning playing by one of the greatest orchestras in the world. This notoriously 'difficult' band gives it all and more to the only conductor they truly have any respect for after Furtwangler.

Ohne Filter - Musik Pur: Phoebe Snow in Concert
Released in DVD by Music Video Distribu (18 June, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Phoebe Snow
Average review score:

Phoebe-Often copied/Never equalled
I have been a fan since the first lines of "Poetry Man' graced the airwaves in 1974 - Wow what a voice. I saw Phoebe in London in 1979 promoting her then new release "Against The Grain" and her rendition of "Keep a Watch On The Shoreline" which I hadn't heard at the time, left me floored the energy and conviction that she harnesses in her live performances are second to none.
As for this DVD it is as good if not better, she is ten years older and her voice just gets better. Her versions of "I'm Your Girl" and If I Can Just Get Through The Night" are spine chilling she hits notes that only Phoebe can, if my time was now to shuffle off - I would go a happy man, they are that good.
She is amazing!! All fans must buy it, everyone else should buy it.. I await her new release "Natural Wonder" which is what she is to me and popular musics best kept secret- Experience Phoebe now..

A must for Phoebe fans
Pre-ordered just on name alone. Have been waiting forever to see Phoebe live and this actually helps. Although an old, old performance (and from German TV to boot), it is one of the best preserved and best sounding performances I've seen. Phoebe's voice is flawless throughout the set and amazingly powerful. She seems to possess a voice like the old-time barrelhouse singers - no microphone needed to raise her voice above others. This is a highly recommended live recording that was best suited for release on DVD. Now my only wish is too still see Phoebe in concert.

Phoebe can break glass with those octaves!
Phoebe Snow has long been one of the most under-appreciated artists of the rock era. What is a shame is artists like Janet Jackson and Britney Spears sell millions of recordings and have a tenth of Phoebe's vocal ability. This lady delivers the goods during this ten song live concert in which she mixes rock, blues, jazz and soul to perfection. Her signature song "Poetry Man" is an acoustic gem that shows off that incredible voice and soon after her band shifts into high gear with great takes on the rockin "Cardiac Arrest" and "Let The Good Times Roll". Her interaction with the audience shows the viewer she truly appreciates her fans who have been always dedicated to her music. The picture quality and sound is flawless making the viewer feel as though they are in the front row. Phoebe may not sell millions of records anymore but her voice is a national rock n roll treasure for sure. Buy this DVD and enjoy one of the most overlooked female vocalists of our generation.

Ray Charles - In Concert
Released in DVD by Image Entertainment (20 March, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Ray Charles
At the age of 71, Ray Charles hasn't lost a step musically. If anything, his performance has been honed even further to what can only be described as the distillation of musical soul. Taped at a benefit concert in Miami, Florida, this set documents Charles with a massive orchestra that he manipulates like a trio, with a solid sense of dynamics and fun. He mixes everything from country to city, from pop to blues, from Hank Williams to George Gershwin, and renders it all with that purringly gritty voice and economical keyboard work. For good measure, he works out on saxophone for one number as well. He also sings a pair of duets with Diane Schuur, "It Had to Be You" and "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To." --Marshall Fine
Average review score:

A crown jewel!
What can I say? Ray Charles is a jewel in the crown of American music. I saw him do a similar show in Kansas City with their symphony. Seventy-three and performing circles around artists one-third his age. An excellent performance and excellent sound. Do yourself a favor - BUY IT!!

Ray Converts a New Fan!
I have never been much of a Ray Charles fan...just not my era. But given Ray's classic rendition of "America the Beautiful" I decided to check this DVD out. Boy, I found out what I have been missing! I was mesmorized! The DVD quality is great, the song selection is excellent, the orchestra is superb, and even my three year old daughter loves Ray's rendition of America! It is truly awe inspiring and definitely worth having in a DVD collection.

Instant Classic!
You love music? You love rhythm and blues? You love Jazz? You love Gospel? Ray Charles - Mr. Music - created an instant classic with this great performance. You will love this concert! This DVD is also great without the TV. Wonderful background for you next dinner with your spouse....

Whitney Houston: Live in Concert

Whitney At Her Best
Whitney Houston Welcome Home The Heroes is one of the best concerts she has ever done. This concerts had great arrangements that met her vocals head to head. The absolute favorite songs on this video is " All the Man that I Need" because she brings a little slow remix to the arrangement that was already beautiful. The other song is " A Song For You" which is a Donny Hathaway song that she made into her own. She really did those two songs some justice. The video is great. It will be a perfect addition to your concert collections. If you're a true fan, this video should be with the South Africa Concert and The Classic Whitney Concert that came on HBO, that you should have taped when it aired.

Incredible.
I got this dvd about half a year ago, this is truly one of the best performances that I've seen by a female singer. This concert also goes by the title of Welcome Home Heroes.

1) I Wanna Dance With Somebody - The crowd is into it, Whitney is very cute in that yellow outfit, very fun performance.
2) Saving All My Love For You - Very slowed down and extended rendition, Whitney is flirting with the troops, great vocals.
3) How Will I Know - See 1)
4) Love Medley(Didn't We Almost Have It All/A House Is Not A Home/Where Do Broken Hearts Go) - Whitney comesback with a stunning red gown. This is where it kinda "starts" for me, the previous 3 were kinda cute, but now Whitney's voice starts soaring and she really impresses.
5) All The Man That I Need - WOW. Just WOW. In the final chorus, Whitney simply outclasses the original version. The crowd is going wild.
6) My Name Is Not Susan - She now switches to a green outfit. Fun performance
7) Anymore - GREAT. Very fun dancing and simply a very cute performance. It's amazing to see her hit those notes while dancing like crazy, very impressive.
8) A Song For You - At on point, she belts so hard and long, you'll be amazed at the power.
9) Revelation - At the end, everyone was going nuts. She really brought down the house, words cannot describe!
10) Who Do You Love - Fun performance, I really like the live arrangements, much better then on the Cd.
11) I'm Your Baby Tonight - Great performance
12) Greatest Love Of All - Perfect performance. She's now wearing a blue gown. There are so many funny moments in this performance, you'll love it. Let's say it envolves a little kid. Those 2 last notes, probably 15 seconds each.

Some of the dance numbers are a little outdated in terms of style because this was from 1991, but the VOICE is what matters. And the ballads are truly amazing, YOU GOT TO SEE All The Man That I Need.

Also, the dvd has great sound & picture quality. All in all, this is a MUST-HAVE for any Whitney fan or anyone who likes great singing.

Excellent Whitney !
I own this concert in LVD(Laser Video Disc)version (1991). Indeed, a very "interesting" concert in many respects :

1)Whitney Houston sings for the American troops coming back from the first war against Irak : this concert is produced "with the cooperation of the Department of the Navy and the Department of Defense". I might be wrong but, Whitney Houston is the first Black singer to be hired to sing for the American troops.
Let me tell you that she has unanimous backing from all these KIDS!

2)The Director is David Mallet : he also directed some of Tina Turner's concerts : good "prises de vue" and so emotional...

3)Whitney Houston's performance in this concert is so excellent that you'll need to play it over and over again...

4)I like ALL the songs performed in this unforgettable concert but "All the Man that I Need","Greatest Love of All" & "A Song for You" are my favourite : Whitney is at her best !

"WELCOME HOME HEROES WITH WHITNEY HOUSTON", Live in Concert, is just a moment of pure emotion : she's talented, she's beautiful and above all, the soldiers seem so terribly relieved to be home.
THIS CONCERT IS ALSO A HISTORICAL MOMENT !
It will also probably make you think about what's happening NOW.

Bryn Terfel Live in Concert
Released in DVD by Universal Music & VI (11 February, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Bryn Terfel
Average review score:

Great Concert by Terfel and Orchestra
I've seen Terfel several times and he always blows me away in person. He does so in this concert as well! The orchestra and conducting along with his singing just couldn't be improved upon. A perfectly wonderful concert. The Wagner was beautifully sung and Terfel makes it seem much easier than it is! However, his secret weapon is his ability to communicate, phrase and sing the Broadway show tunes. Each time he performs a selection he makes it new, fresh and his! I loved this DVD and highly recommend it to anyone who loves great music performed by highly trained musicians in a beautiful concert hall. This one is truly special!

Fantastic Live Performance DVD!!
A common problem with opera and performing arts dvds is that the audio and video is not taken with the dvd format in mind. Recently, Deutsche Grammophon has began reissuing dvds from older performances, remixed in DTS and DD 5.1. However, this concert of Bryn Terfel is the first performance video done with the digital format in mind. The sound and video are superb and there are loads of additional features, including XFI which allows you to jump to interviews in between arias to get indepth answers about why Bryn chose that piece for the concert. Kudos to DG!

On to the actual concert: Bryn is simply at his best. I have seen him perform live three times and was impressed by his energy and ability to communicate with the audience. It is so amazing to see him perform some difficult pieces such as Wotan's Farewell and Falstaff's Honor monologue with such intensity and beautiful line. He sounds incredible and seems to keep getting better and better. The musical theater pieces for the second half of the program are well chosen and makes one wish he would take to Broadway in the near future. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone- from the casual opera fan to keen enthusiasts.
