The Wind
Released in DVD by Simitar Video (29 June, 1999)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Nico Mastorakis
Average review score:

terrorizing, creepy and dark.
Meg Foster is terrorized by Hauger relentlesly. A woman alone, writing a novel and a man outside her door, stalking her makes for a good thriller. I am excited to find this video again. I couldn't remember the name of it, but I remember the woman with haunting eyes. I traced her back to Rutger Hauer, and bingo! The Wind. Watch it, rent it, buy it. It is a great chiller thriller. But one word of caution for women: DON'T WATCH IT ALONE...ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT!

Good movie, worth seeing
I haven't seen the DVD, but I have seen the VHS of this, and it is a pretty creepy movie. What I really wanted to comment on was how great the cover art for this DVD is! Wow, a real improvement of the old cover art, and really, just a great image! I love the little picture of the guy chasing the girl along the bloody blade. Pretty much fits with the creepy movie, about an author who struggles to survive a night of unrelenting terror at the hands of a mad stalker, all set in an isolated castle in Greece. Great movie, a definite recommendation.

Worth 'the wind' in action in this suspense/horror thriller.
Had seen this movie way back in 1987, when it was just released. Although, never accessible again, its worth viewing for its story line, in particular 'the wind' in action. The suspense/horror is gripping. Hope that its VHS price reduces, as its a collectable.

The First Power
Released in DVD by Mgm/Ua Studios (28 August, 2001)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Robert Resnikoff
Starring: Lou Diamond Phillips and Tracy Griffith
Average review score:

The perfect killer is one who cannot be stopped
Writer director Robert Resnikoff's action thriller is about the battle between Lou Diamond Phillips as a LA cop and a serial killer who's mark is the inverted pentagram, which he knives into the flesh of his victims. LDP thinks he has the upper hand when the killer is captured and executed in the gas chamber, not knowing that he will return as an entity with "the first power" ie the ability to inhabit the body of others. Therefore the problem arises - how do you stop something that is techically dead? The killer feels a personal connection between LDP and himself and chooses his future victims as people associated with LDP, that is when others with a "lesser sense of reality" like the homeless, junkies and drunks, aren't available. Resnikoff gets his biggest laughs when a baglady is possessed and taunts LDP with "Give us a kiss" and "It's not nice to hit a lady". Resnikoff makes good use of the atmospheric Stewart Copeland music score (nearly as effective as the one he did for Frances Coppola's Rumble Fish) and moves things along pleasingly, taking great satisfaction in the stuntwork, since the killer is remarkeably agile, and adding more of the supernatural in the form of LDP's helper Tracy Griffith as a smarmy red-headed psychic, with partly overcomes the general silliness of the concept. Resnikoff also scores laughs from the killer's grandmother, with Julianna McCarthy giving lines like "He was not illegitimate" and "You're that cop" a comic hiss. There is also much hissing of cats, optical and aural hallucinations, a demonstration of Griffith's predictive vision and then the playing out of it, an unsafe abandoned water sewer with an available waterslide, and a nun brought in to explain the differences between the first and subsequent powers which hold the key to the destruction of the demon. One might question the logic of running from a being that is able to transport itself to your destination before you can get there, a kind of anti-chase joke, and also firing into a fan when the bullets ricochet off the spinning blades, and Resnikoff overplays the animosity with matching eye closeups. LDP is said to be "surrounded by a shell", cynical and nihilistic after the death of his father and perhaps rather burnt out from his third serial killer. However that still doesn't excuse LDP's pugnacious attitude or flat acting. He's the kind of protagonist that you enjoy seeing hurt, and I was grateful that Resnikoff cut his romanctic scene short. However the ending is left unresolved, as if a setup for the sequel.

Unforgettable
This film is one that I'd never forget. The story is very intriguing and really gives you the creeps. The idea of having these kinds of powers is really creepy. A classic must have DVD for horror and suspense lovers!

Girls of Radio Talk Rock & Sho
Released in DVD by Image Entertainment (15 June, 1999)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director: Vicangelo Bulluck
Average review score:

Enjoyable DVD that has some memorable scenes
This is a slightly older Playboy DVD that came out back in 1995. There are 13 video segments here, each around 4 minutes each. A couple of Playmates appear on this DVD, such as Julie Cialini and Jessica Lee, along with Penthouse Pet Amy Lynn Baxter and Newsstand Special model Kim Egler (her only video appearance I've seen so far).

All of the segments here are new, no rehashed footage. There are quite a few good scenes here. Amy Lynn appears with pornstar Tempest in a girl-girl bathtub scene. There is one other really hot bathtub scene worthy of being in a Wet & Wild DVD, by a blonde named Lizz Cufari, as she oils herself up after getting out of the bathtub.

The other scenes were pretty much typical scenes with mostly posing for the camera, a lingerie party, radio DJs undressing while on the air. One nice scene was an air traffic reporter lying in the buff on the wing of an airplane.

This DVD is worth a rental if you can find it, and it's worth buying if you prefer non-Playmates on your DVDs.

A Surprising Video!
I never knew the girls sitting behind those microphones were so sexy. This video is quite a surprise for anyone who listens to the radio. Playboy creatively shows us what really goes on in the studio and the true beauty of various radio personalities. The sets, music, women, and acting are all excellent. This is a must have video for anyone interested in radio and women.

Men Seeking Women
Released in DVD by Artisan (Fox Video) (23 September, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)

Men behaving badly
Men Seeking Women is a comedy about three guys, not having much luck with women, engaging in a bet where the winner must obtain a girlfriend and live with her for three months. Whoever accomplishes this first wins the pot.

Grant Shaud plays Les, the instigator of the bet, while Will Ferrell and Anthony Palermo play Al and Nick, respectively. All three are close friends, and, on their 33rd birthday (all three were born on the same day) Les talks them into putting up 2 grand apiece for the bet, money none of them can really afford to lose.

On answering personal ads, all three men have various degrees of success. The funniest being Al (Will Farrell) getting cold feet when meeting his blind date in a restaurant, and trying to skip out on her through a bathroom window.

As the movie progresses, Les becomes entangled in a particularly sticky situation, Nick employs a bit of chicanery to try and win the bet, while Al goes through a series of very funny situations in his quest.

While this may seem like a romantic comedy of sorts, it's more of an episode of Men Behaving Badly. As we get to know the men, we develop an understanding as to why none of them are involved in a committed, meaningful relationships with women. They claim to want what most of us want, but their actions seem to say otherwise.

Will Ferrell steals the movie, providing quite a bit of comic relief, but with a hint of underlying desperation that fleshes out his character nicely. While there are sometimes darker undertones that appear within the movie, I wouldn't call this a black comedy. The superficialities that most people have seem to lie closer to the surface with these three men, especially Nick, and ultimately ruin their chances at succeeding with their relationships with women. There was a line in the movie, when Al and Les are talking about Nick where one of them says, "Nick's world is a great place to live...if you're Nick." I think this can be said of all of them, and really works to illustrate their overall problem.

Soon we see negative effects on their lives, to which the men attribute to the bet, but it appears that the bet only served to amplify negative aspects already present within the men themselves. None of the men appear to be very likable from the start, garnering little sympathy from the audience as their misfortunes pile up, but the ending suggests maybe something was learned as each is forced to deal with the consequences of their actions.

In my opinion this movie is not a romantic comedy, so if that's what you are looking for, look elsewhere. If you are looking for a fairly funny comedy with semi-serious undertones, then rent this movie before buying, see if it fits your tastes.

Ferrell is funny!
Three guys bet each other to see who can get a girlfriend and live with her for three months. Grant Shaud (of Murphy Brown fame) is the instigator of the bet.

Will Ferrell is a photographer who has some of the worst dates imaginable. Basically, Will steals every scene he's in -- but be prepared, it's totally different than anything else I've seen him do. It's a very understated but hilarious performance.

There's also a very funny scene when one of the guys relates a near-death sex experience.
This is obviously a very low budget movie and it's rough in spots, but it's still pretty funny. My girlfriend actually liked it better than I did.

Excellent restoration
All the movies (and serial) in this 3 DVD set have been digitally restored and it shows. The movies fare the best, with beautifully pristine prints free of scratches, reel changes and the usual other problems one encounters with films from this era. They really have been cleaned up superbly. The original 15 episode serial is also very clean, although the white levels are a little too high, but this is a fairly minor quibble. Only the Boris Karloff movie "Dick Tracy Versus Gruesome" is a little less clean than the others, exhibiting slightly more grain. But overall it's a very fine job. Audio is clear and free of hiss.

Simple Days
This is a simple good and bad guy movie. John Wayne is the only one on a white horse. He fights evil and wins the heart of the pretty girl. His friends are of the best caliber and stick by him no matter what. I liked it because it reminds me when good always won and life was simple.

I'm Going to Remake this...
Well, being a HUGE Kinks fan I bought this as a X'mas present for myself. I owned the soundtrack first and loved all of the music on it, so I was a bit surprised to find out that most of the music was written for porn scenes in the movie! Still, the music is EXCELLENT and the movie is a funny cult classic also. They don't make movies like this anymore.....I can see why. Rent it before you buy it. If you're a Kinks fan, just go ahead and buy it. Ray Davies has said that it's his favorite film of all time!
