The Calling comes to Smallville
I first heard a brief part of this song on the WB's hit show Smallville. I really like it. It took me about 3 weeks to track it down....I could not find the actual title of the song. The song is used in the first season, and used very well I might add, when Clark return a very special necklace to his secret love Lana Lang, then turns and walks away without her knowing it was he who returned the lost necklace. I highly recommend this album and I continue to listen for more from The Calling

Can I Go Now

MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Jennifer Love Hewitt

So much fun to watch!
The DVD single "Can I Go Now" is an absolute treat. It features the music videos for "Can I Go Now" and "Barenaked," both directed by Liz Friedlander. A photo gallery is also included, which features 9 great snapshots. The picture and sound quality is superb. This is a must-have for all Jennifer Love Hewitt fans.

Don't let her go before buying this DVD
I don't really write reviews but I thought I would for this one just because I think it is something people should take a look at. The DVD includes the first two music videos from Jennifer Love Hewitt's last album, "Barenaked". The first song "Can I Go Now?" is focused on questioning what the purpose is of continuing on in a troubled relationship, while "Barenaked" is about the insecurities everyone feels in life. Both are fun, hook-filled pop/rock songs, and Love's voice really goes well with these two tracks. The videos are both very high quality transfers, everything looks and sounds great, and I personally think "Can I Go Now?" really stands out as a video. There is also a bonus photo gallery included with the DVD with some promotional photos. If you are a fan of Jennifer, or her type of music, I think you will be very pleased with this item. On a side note, this is the first DVD single I've bought, and I hope record companies embrace them in the future, it could really help make buying singles worthwhile again. I think anybody else who buys this will see what I'm talking about.

Can I Go Now- Jennifer Love Hewitt
Jennifer Love Hewitt, one's of America's most talented and lovable women, has come so far and worked so hard on her videos for this DVD. The two music videos on this DVD are: Can I Go Now and Barenaked. She sings resplendently and her efforts to ameliorate life and the human beings around her are astonishing.
She has an ideal intellect to sing what's on her mind and act at the same time. What I mean is that she is an artist who speaks for herself, acting, dancing, and singing. She is unlike most music artists who try to change the way they look or appear. She is happy for who she is and doesn't care if she's wearing an old black T-shirt with some faded out pants, or a hot red mini skirt and a push-up bra. She has always wanted to have a music album of her own and this by far has been her most consequential project of her life. In these videos you she the real Jennifer Love Hewitt, the young Texas girl, who grew up to achieve her greatest dream. Jennifer, if you ever read this I want you to know that you are one of the most extraordinary, outstanding, conspicuous, and eminent person to have existed in my time, and you have been most invigorating and meaningful women to my life.

Go Paddle - Beginning to Intermediate Kayak and sit-on-top

Excellent resource for entry level kayakers!
I bought this DVD BEFORE I bought my kayak. After watching it, I was able to make an informed decision on the type of kayaking I wanted to do and the type of kayak I needed to meet my needs. In addition, it explains proper paddle and safety techniques. Once I bought the kayak and went paddling a few times, I found it helpful to watch the video again to review my paddle technique. I highly recommend you watch this video before you purchase a kayak if you are unsure of the type of kayak you want. Very informative!

Superbe. The best of its kind!
I was just able to watch this DVD and was very impressed. Firstly, I wanted to comment on the production which is really a step forward in this genre of film. The editing is slick and clean. The audio is concice and well mastered.

But what's important here is what the film covers. From a complete beginner, to someone with limited experience looking to improve the paddling experience, increase safety and basically have more fun, this video touches on all the little bits of information that are necessary, but that could take a lifetime to learn on ones own. If you're even just a weekend worrior, and paddle 2 or three times a year, this video is well worth watching for its wealth of information.

Great instructional for those who want a quick-start
If you want to get into kayaking and experience the outdoors, I recommend this video.

Key sections covered in this Video include a brief but thought provoking discussion of kayak design characteristics and how they affect its performance, safety and personal equipment, launching in a variety of situations, paddle strokes, bracing to prevent capsizing, and exiting and re-entry into your boat if it does happen.

I wish I had this video before I got my first touring boat last season, since I am now considering a much different style and size for my needs. If you are just getting into kayaking, I suggest you consider this video even before you get your first boat. The discussion on kayaks will definitely help you decide what kind of boat you would like to paddle, and make the smartest purchase decision for your needs.

The material covered is so general, if you are planning on getting into creek running, touring or even weekend cottage fishing, this video will definitely send you onto the water with ideas about the skills you need to develop to make your paddling experience more fun, and more safe!

The only missing information from this video is thorough coverage of roll techniques. I expect this is deliberate though, as you should learn this from a certified or experienced instructor. (Immediately when you get your boat.)

Happy paddling!

Kings Go Forth
Released in DVD by MGM/UA Video (05 February, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Delmer Daves
It comes from Hollywood's era of grown-up "topic" movies, but Kings Go Forth has not left much of a trail. Two GIs, stationed near the French Riviera toward the end of World War II, compete for the love of a local girl (Natalie Wood). Her secret: Her father was black. The guys are Frank Sinatra, in his lost and lonely key, and Tony Curtis, as a spoiled kid breezing by on his looks (this was the same year Curtis did The Defiant Ones, also on race). Director Delmer Daves was very good at this kind of melancholy melodrama (see also A Summer Place), but this movie's non-reputation is easy to understand; it's mild and sentimental at its core. The only character that doesn't seem to be Representing Something is Sinatra's tender portrait of a soldier at loose ends, a far cry from his nervy Maggio in From Here to Eternity. --Robert Horton

Kings Go Forth
I have always loved this movie. It is a wonderful drama and the cast is over the top with talent. One other, very important reason I love this movie, is that my dad is in this movie. He plays a German officer. He helped authenticate the military uniforms warn by the actors. For helping do this, the director offered him a bit part....my dad is a decorated veteran of 2 campaigns. WWll, and Korea! So it has always been a family joke that dad defected during the war...
Sincerely,
D.L.

Superb acting by non-actor Sinatra
Put ol' Blue Eyes in a vehicle where he never sang and usually you got a rather forgettable performance. In such cases, it was best to put him in a role where, as the old country song went, all he had to do was "ack natcher'ly". You'd never know that from this effort, though--where he played an Army officer competing for the love of a beautiful French girl (Natalie Wood) with his dreamboat sergeant (Tony Curtis). Curtis' looks and charm sweep the girl off her feet, but it's clear that Sinatra has more to offer her in what really matters. But the balloon really goes up when Wood's mother reveals to both men that her late husband was African-American, making their daughter a mulatto. This causes Sinatra to do some soul searching centered on the fact that his upbringing had a certain amount of racism in it that he'd never really questioned until now. As for Curtis' reaction, I don't want to give too much away. Except for the fact that this film shows Sinatra--a man whose main talents were in another branch of entertainment, holding his own with two of the American screen's best talents.

One of the finest movies ever!
I had been wanting to see this movie for a long time. I rented it the other day, and I'm so glad I did. This is Frank Sinatra at his best. He is wonderful as the loving, tender Sam. He's so sweet to the beautiful, yet fragile Monique, the girl he deeply loves. This movie is one of honor, character, integrity, and true love- traits all seen in Sam. This is also a very bold movie, especially for the 1950s. Sam's undying love for Monique is lovely, even after she tells him her father was a Negro. He ponders this, but his love for Monique stands strong. This has become one of my favorite movies. It's a touching story about true love, and I highly recommend it.

Pilates On The Go
Released in DVD by Image Entertainment (01 January, 2010)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
There's no fancy set, no drumbeats, and no modeling of the latest workout fashions in Pilates on the Go. It's just instructor Maria Leone, a mat, a band, and tubing--and 52 minutes of Pilates instruction. After a few minutes of explanation of the principles and goals of this German exercise system, Leone warms up and gets down to business with 100s, rollups, rowing, scissors, criss-cross--the works. She doesn't blend with yoga, dance, or Tai Chi; instead she takes viewers through most of the mat-based Pilates catalog (corkscrew, swan, seal, you name it), focusing on stretching the spine, breathing correctly, and using "core strength." (Translated: Get those abs in shape!) The camera work is inconsistent and thus noticeable when it shouldn't be, but otherwise this is about as straightforward and useful a Pilates instruction as you're likely to find. Some experience or at least determination to learn would be helpful. --Kimberly Heinrichs

You mean I've had "abs" under there all along???
If you've never "experienced" Pilates (pronounced 'pi-la-tays'; don't make the embarassing mistake I did by saying "pilots"), get ready to have your butt whooped. Joseph Pilates and his wife, a registered nurse, developed this routine under the realization that the abdomnial area is the "core" of wellness- it supports your upper body, back, posture, etc. In the past few years, Pilates has really come into the mainstream, and there are many classes and videos to choose from. I happen to like "Pilates On the Go", because it is mellow, very gentle and yet VERY effective. The DVD comes with an exercise band that will help you with some of the more difficult postions (such as the classic "roll-up", where you literally come of off the floor one vertabrae at a time from a lying down postion)and also helps you with stretching. After my first session, which I must confess did not last the duration of the DVD, my abs were sore for DAYS- that's how powerful this routine is (not just my abs, come to think of it- my legs, sides, back and butt were all "work-out sore). If you remember not to get too frustrated, work at YOUR OWN PACE, don't expect miracles from yourself right away, and keep at it diligently, you'll surprise yourself at how strong you will become in a matter of weeks. A great investment for your overall well-being.

Quite Impressed
This workout is a full-body workout with an emphasis on posture and core strength. You will be rolling up and down and learning to breathe deeply. No shoes needed and you can do this routine almost anywhere.

"Pilates On the Go" offers a full-body workout and includes every imaginable Pilates exercise. There were many new moves I had not seen in other videos, including the "swan dive" which was quite amusing. Imagine yourself as the base of a rocking horse. Yes.

IDEA master trainer Maria Leone has been teaching Pilates since 1989 and first encountered the exercises while studying dance at New York University. She has been certified to teach "The Method" and owns Bodyline Fitness Studio in Beverly Hills.

I love the way Maria Leone teaches because she is not interested in a fancy routine, just the basics. Her pleasant voice is calming and she places an emphasis on stretching and uses pace effectively to warm the body.

She also has the exercises set up in a logical and effective progression. You never feel uncomfortable moving from one exercise to the next. It is a slow floor dance to fitness. You are mostly on your back, side or stomach. There are a few exercises done while standing.

The Exercises Include: A warm-up, Pilates Hundred, Roll-Up, Roll-Up with Band, Rowing, Bow and Arrow, Rollover, Leg Circles, Rolling, Single Leg Stretch, Modified Double Leg Stretch, Scissors, Criss-Cross, Spine Stretch, Open Leg Rocker, Modified Corkscrew, Saw with Band, Saw, Basic Swan, Leg Lifts, Intermediate Swan, Swan Dive, Modified Double Leg Stretch, Double Leg Kick, Spine Twist, Side Kick Series, Teaser, Preparations, Swimming, Plank, Leg Pull Front, Reverse Plank, Leg Pull Back, Side Lift, Seal, Push-Ups and Upper Body exercises with resistance tubing (or you can use weights and a resistance band).

What I really appreciated was the "modified" exercises. When an exercise is new to you, you won't want to dive into the exercise immediately and Maria shows you the modified exercise and then asks you to repeat it if you are new to the exercise or continues with the regular exercise. There is no time lapse. You do the modified version and the regular version if you are doing this routine on a regular basis. So, no waiting. The modified version becomes a warm-up for the next exercise. If you are new to the exercise, you just do it twice while she continues with the advanced exercise.

The Benefits of Pilates are very encouraging:

Improves your Posture
Strengthens your Back
Strengthens your Stomach
Increases your Flexibility
Tones your Entire Body
Sharpens Your Mind
Gives you Confidence - the exercises are not too difficult to master and "no fancy footwork."
Encourages a healing of the mind, body, spirit
Improves your Life because it calms the mind

This exercise routine is normally purchased in a set and as far as I can tell from the site I went to, they do not sell the resistance tubing or Dyna-Band separately. The entire set is around fifty-five dollars. So, if you can improvise with items you already have, that seems to be a frugal way to go.

Items you will need to have if you only buy the DVD or Video:

A mat or you can just use a towel on a carpet
Resistance Tubing or you can use a Dyna-Band/Resistance Band effectively in places and alternate with a set of three-pound weights.
A Dyna-Band or you can use any "Resistance Bands."

If you have tried just about every other way to lose weight, give Pilates a try. I have been quite impressed with the results from these exercises. I started doing Pilates in college and in a summer I remember changing my body. Unfortunately life got in the way of exercise and I have recently gone back to these exercises because I remembered how fast they worked.

Honestly, I have tried everything from diet to walking to yoga and nothing works as well as Pilates. The bonus of this workout is the almost immediate results you start to see. That keeps you highly motivated. You can literally sculpt your body. While I'm still far from perfect, Pilates is working and I finally feel I will one day reach my goals.

If you are discouraged with other workouts and want to see fast results, try this routine. You may also love the Winsor Pilates workouts or anything by Karen Voight or The Method videos. What is nice about workout videos/DVDs is that once you have some of the fitness equipment, you can use it with many other workouts. So, buying the equipment is really an investment and when one instructor starts a trend, the rest seem
to follow.

What you will notice with Maria Leone is her leadership qualities. Her exercises have unique twists that are indications of originality. Originality prevents boredom. These are simple exercises, but never boring. I look forward to more workouts by this talented instructor.

How about "Stretching On the Go?"

Go Tigers!
Released in DVD by New Video Group (24 September, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Kenneth A. Carlson
High school football rules in Massillon, Ohio. In this blue-collar community, dubbed "Touchdown Town" in a 1951 newsreel, the Washington High Tigers are a cradle-to-grave passion. Team boosters visit maternity wards and bestow footballs to newborn "little Tigers." A mortician offers customers Tiger theme caskets. This winning documentary, ranked by ESPN.com as among the six best sports documentaries of all time, chronicles the Tigers' pivotal 1999 season--its 106th!--in which the team's success or failure on the field could impact an upcoming tax levy to save the town's beleaguered schools. Filmmaker and Massillon native Kenneth Carlson is no mere cheerleader. He tackles the touchy issue of priorities (some parents hold promising eighth graders back so they will be bigger and stronger) and the town's Stepfordian devotion to the team that put it on the map ("Conform or be destroyed," states one disaffected youth). More inspiring are the profiles of the team's three captains, in whom one can see the positive role football plays in their lives. --Donald Liebenson
Average review score:

Excellent analysis of sports and society
Go Tigers! features the town of Massillon, Ohio, its citizens and the near cult-like obsession with high school football. What really makes this documentary come to life is how in-depth the producers go to portray local events as critical to the well-being of the town itself. What is also telling is how the camera crews follow the players and other citizens around to official (and not so official) functions, giving the film more creditability in its research pursuits.

On a different level, the story itself has great entertainment value, emulating the common "David vs. Goliath" or in a different sense, the theme of "Rudy." Regardless of the reason for viewing the film, Go Tigers! is a story that is not to be missed; if not for its intrinsic value, then just for its feel-good value and triumph of the community spirit.

A surprisingly well-done and interesting documentary.
I live in a town that I considered to be big on high school sports. I was wrong. This film portrays a town controlled by football so incredibly well. It shows harsh and brutal reality, as well as unpredictability and compassion. This film follows the people of Massilon, Ohio, a town where the Massilon High School Tigers football team rules everything. It wonderfully portrays the people and the lifestyles of the town. The film follows the three team captain, the coach and lots of random other towns people. This documentary brings up big questions about whether sports are more important than education, social and ecemonical classes, high school "recruiting" and tax payers views on levy's to save the school. This team is so popular in this town that all the money from the school system is pumped into the football program. You play football or care about football or become an outcast. There are pep rallies every week, stores devoted completely to the team and they even have an actual tiger for their mascot. But with this football program being so big, the school is beginning to fail. A levy is proposed to help fix them, but with the tigers coming off of a 4-6 losing season, it seems impossible to pass a levy without having an awesome season. This documentarian has entered into this project not knowing the outcome and has made a brilliant film otu of it. This is a must see for nearly anyone. It is highly enjoyable, funny, suspenseful and dramatic. I loved it.

Go Tigers! En excellent Documentary
People talk about the over-hype of football in this town, but they don't understand. I have been to this town, seen the pre-game festivities, witnessed first hand the way this town all come together on a friday night, everyone, to cheer on their team. It's the real life Varsity Blues, and it is amazing to see. Everywhere you go in Massilion there are paw prints, murals, signs, and fans. The movie does an excellent job of accurately portraying the feelings and emotions of this town and they way they view life. If you ever get the opportunity, I recommend you experience it for yourself, that is If you can get tickets to a game!

Battle Athletes 2: Ready, Set, Go
Released in DVD by Pioneer Video (12 January, 1999)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Kazuhiro Ozawa
Training continues for 16-year-old Akari Kanzaki, who hopes to win the "Cosmic Beauty" competition. With her teammates Kris and Anna, she must complete a 40-kilometer obstacle course run through a 1,000-year-old abandoned satellite in "Screaming Advance." They're off to a record-breaking start when the evil Mylandah sabotages the school's computer system, threatening not only the success of Akari's team, but their lives. The trio manages to escape through a combination of pluck, daring, and athletic prowess, although the girls still require the aid of Grant Oldman, the sky-surfing headmaster. The enormous satellite used as a test course crashes to Earth but causes no damage aside from the splash it makes when it hits the ocean. To recuperate, the girls go to a hot spring in the satellite that serves as their training camp/dorm, where they make a shocking discovery about Anna. "Match Unexpected" centers on the annual boys' school vs. girls' school competition, with Akari, Tanya, and Mylandah representing their alma mater in a game of Acro Spike, a cross between soccer and volleyball. The sexual undercurrents move into the open as Headmaster Oldman dresses his players in skimpy outfits and encourages them to pose provocatively to distract the boys. (The strategy backfires when the boys' school sends gay athletes to the contest.) Anna appears with a new identity and Kris, who continues to run around naked, gives Akari a full-body massage. --Charles Solomon

Wierd little anime... But oh, so cute!
I had heard of Battle Athletes Toshoyden before, (Original Japanese name) way back in 1996,but have never seen it.

I have to say it was well worth the wait, although I found it a bit wierd for them to be using a Saturn IV launch vehicle in the 50th century.

My only disapointment was that the discs only contain a meazly 2 episodes per disc. This could have been a much better series if they had crammed all 6 episodes onto one disc. This would have been a little more {money}, but far less of a waste.

If nothing else, I reccomend these discs for the beauty of the anime alone.

I found a lot of Star Trek , The Outer Limits, and a whole lot of Tenchi in here. All and all, a great little anime!

great anime, however....
I've already seen all of Battle Athletes Victory. It's very good. In my title when I say "however" I am saying that because if you're looking to buy this DVD, I think you should be aware that this specific DVD isn't the first in the series. Actually, im not completely sure, but all the info about this DVD leads me to conclude that this contains episodes from later on in the series. It starts where Akari has ALREADY entered the University Sattellite. The beginning of the entire series however, starts off at a training school in Antarctica. So... I recommend this series yes, but I also strongly recommend that you watch it from the beginning...

Why did I buy this?
It was cheep & looked cute. I thought at least I would enjoy the animation if nothing else, but it was really a lot better than I was expecting! It looks so much like Tenchi (hair, clothes, setting, etc.) that that's what I thought I'd get. (I love Tenchi, too, of course) But the atmosphere is totaly different. Hmmmmm... can't really think of a series it reminds me of right off. It just has a really realistic, inspirational feel...It's really easy to get into how Akari feels about getting to University Satilite. She's excited & determined, even when she gets a bit of a shock, learning she's not as great as she thought, at the beginning. All the charicters are cool & original. For the most part they are too cute & awesome to hate. (because that happens too much! Poor Amelia... Poor Usagi... Poor Mia... weeeeell, Miaka's pushing it, but I like her, too.) None of them are the wimpy kind, anyway (they get bashed most) but they can't be, not if they got into US. Sorry, I just had to emphisize how well designed the characters are. They make the story great. The only one I don't liek is the B!tchy second year she meets in the first ep. XP but it's good to have bad guys, or how do you have heros. Oh, & another thing is, I didn't get bored. Not at all. I get bored easily, too. Still wavering? Get this anime. I'm telling you, you'll love it...

Battle Athletes, Vol. 3: Go!
Released in DVD by Pioneer Video (15 September, 1998)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Kazuhiro Ozawa
The adventures of teenage girl athletes have been standard fare in manga since the late '60s, with anime following. Battle Athletes is based on a video game set in the year 4999. Promising girls are sent to a special satellite to train to compete for the coveted title of "Cosmic Beauty," a contest that grew out of the settlement of an interplanetary war 1,000 years earlier. The daughter of a former winner, 16-year-old Akari Kanzaki arrives at the satellite hoping to match her mother's performance. "Chronicle Beginning" sets up Akari and the major supporting characters. Akari is assigned to a team with Kris, a confident, spiritual girl from a back-to-nature commune on the moon, and the terminally shy and whiny Anna. Tanya, an ebullient, food-obsessed African girl, lends comic relief and the icy Mylandah supplies heavy-handed villainy. Training begins in earnest in "Oath Entrant," as the girls compete in zero gravity lacrosse matches: Kris plays skillfully, Mylandah cheats, Tanya hollers, Anna snivels. Akari, who's new to the game, is frustrated by her poor showing but eventually learns the importance of teamwork, patience, and friendship. These lessons mix rah-rah innocence with cutthroat competitiveness and suggestions of lesbianism. Despite the presence of genial headmaster Grant Oldman, the girls get very little formal training. They compete against each other and the high-tech machinery, but the animation is too limited to convey running and the other athletic feats convincingly. --Charles Solomon

Go for Broke!
Released in DVD by Vci/Ffi (29 January, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Robert Pirosh
Average review score:

Go For Broke
The story of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team in WWII is a great story. The unit certainly deserved to have a film made about them. Nice film.

From a Sansei's Point of View
Being a third generation Japanese-American (Sansei), and having my parents interned in the camps, this movie has a special place in my heart. Robert Pirosh did an incredible job in getting so much information about the Japanese- American situation: the camps, the differences between the Hawaiian and State- side Japanese (Kotonks and Kanakas), the different views of the war and even using a Japanese curse word as a password! I was so impressed and pleased with the results.

The movie follows the exploits of the 442, the first all-Nisei (Japanese- American) Regimental combat team in WWII. In early 1942, all the Japanese- Americans in California, Seattle, Oregon and Hawaii were uprooted from their homes and put into camps. All the volunteers were from the 10 internment camps throughout the western states. They felt that this was the only way to prove to the U. S. that they were as patriotic as anybody else, in fact most of them were American Citizens! Since they had nothing to lose, but their lives, their motto was "GO FOR BROKE!" and that's what they did. They are today the most decorated battalion in the history of the U.S. military and proved something that they shouldn't have to be proved, that they were Americans!

Van Johnson is used as the "white man" foil, to show how the rest of the country looked at the Japanese-American, and he does a great job. He starts off as a bigot, but as he begins to understand and respect his troops, he becomes one of them. There's a funny scene where one of his men call him "BAKATARE", which is a curse word close to "Damn, stupid...." and tells him that the soldier is being very polite, he's bowing as he says this. This film has everything: humor, action, great characters and... truth!

Go For Broke!
This is one of the only films to focus in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. It shows the courage of the Japanese-Americans who fought against the Germans during World War II while their families were still imprisoned in the United States. A favorite of my grandfather, a member of the 442nd.
