Stephen is GREAT!
Stephen is the ONLY person who made this film Great!
too bad they couldn't have made these into a "real" franchise series, with a Weak sequel that just stunk...the franchise mentality was destroyed! too bad, "Hoax" made a good villain!

976-EVIL, Great 80's horror fun
I just picked up a copy of this movie and I must say I was not disappointed. I think it was hilarious and it really did strike me hard as an 80's film, but it seemed to make fun of that too. I really must give Robert Englund a big shout out for not having anyone in the nude, not even the basic full frontal. He still got scenes, where other movies would have gone for nudity, across effectively and I know I greatly appreciate it. Ok, so you did see a little bit of the top of the girl, but over all no excessive t and a, it was done in a tasteful way. I also love hearing Robert as the preacher on the television program that you hear in the background. I was really blown away near the end by Robert Picardo(from Star Trek Voyager), he did an amazing job as he always does. Overall a fun movie, but don't expect to be terrified, just expect some fun and some surprises and to have some fun at 80's horror's expense. keep the faith, dEx

Away All Boats
Released in DVD by Goodtimes Home Video (18 May, 1999)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Joseph Pevney
Starring: Jeff Chandler and George Nader
Average review score:

DVD is less than average
I saw this DVD at a local retailer at a discounted price and couldn't resist the bargain. It's a total waste of money. The picture qaulity is pretty good, but it's a pan and scan transfer, the sound is mono and not that great, and there are no special features save the usual French + Spanish subtitles and scene index. Typical GoodTimes style disc.

Chandler gets my Vote any Day
AWAY ALL BOATS is a great WWII film set in the Pacific. Jeff Chandler gives one of his best performances ever as the Captain. He was the best choice for this role because it brought out his best qualities. He is a thinking man's Captain in the best tradition of the genre. There is also a lot of WWII jargon that has been lost from films for many years now. They don't make them this way now days. Our loss.

A Study in Naval Leadership
This is a story of a ship, its captain and crew, as they are melded into one. Chandler is great (I agree with other reviewers: we lost him way too young), but it is the story that is fascinating.

As the son of a WWII Chief Petty Officer, I was glad to see that the film captures the Chiefs as the "backbone of the Navy."

It is a must have for a WWII film library.

Big Bully

An Funny Comedy in the Spirit of the Grumpy Old Men Movies.
An Divorce Father (Rick Morains), who is a Professional Writer and Novelist has come to have back to his Child-Hood home for Teaching. But when he meets again his Much-Feared Childhood Bully (Tom Arnold), everything in the Past between Them are Back in a Whole New Way.

Directed by Steve Miner (House, Halloween:H20, Lake Placid) and Written by Mark Steven Johnson (Daredevil) made a clever, often Misfired Satire of his Earlier Written Film-Grumpy Old Men. Morains and Arnold are Big Time Fun in this Underrated Comedy. This film was a Flop in Theaters but It did better on Video. Grade:B+.

Funny Movie!!
This is a very funny movie. Rick Moranis is a great actor and is very funny in this movie. This is one of my favorite movies.

The Giant Gila Monster/The Wasp Woman
Released in DVD by Elite Entertainment (24 July, 2001)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director: Ray Kellogg
Average review score:

Great...unless you have the first Elite drive-in disc!
If this is the first drive-in disc from Elite that you've ever seen, you'll probably get a lot of enjoyment from it.

Unfortunately for me, I had already purchased and watched the first one in the series ("The Giant Leeches" and "The Screaming Skull"). It was fun, but the problem is that virtually all of the extra drive-in stuff was *exactly* the same on the second disc as it was on the first disc! The "Pic" mosquito coils, "Let's All Go to the Lobby" (not really a drive-in short anyway), Chilly Dilly pickles...the list goes on. For the price of these discs (they're up in Criterion territory, pricewise), I expected to at least get all-new material.

The other thing with both of the drive-in discs is that the film transfers are not so hot. That's all I'll say; if you want details about grain, scratches, splices, etc., look up more detailed reviews on, say, Google, and you'll get the scoop. The bottom line is that the source material and transfers are pretty cruddy. Again, if Elite wants to put a price tag on their DVDs that is approximately the same as many Criterion DVDs, they need to pony up with quality and all-new material. I'm going to proceed very carefully before I even consider purchasing a third drive-in disc, as I felt a bit rooked this time around.

Great concept, good (but not great) execution
I have both discs in this series and they are quite enjoyable.

The Wasp Woman benefits from a strong lead performance by Susan Cabot and The Giant Gila Monsterf benefits from... being unintentionally hilarious.

It's great to see the selection of Drive in clips for advertising and intermision and they are very well transferred (even better than the films).

The "distorto" sound is cute.

Here's where this series needs to improve:

More new (old) drive in clips, some are recycled from the previosu release.

Better transfers of the features. Although "Wasp Woman" shows a nice improvement over the other transfers of "Gila Monster", "Giant Leeches" and "Screaming Skull"

Encode it so it's all one program. When you select The "Night At The Drive In" all the segments are on "seperate tracks". In other words, when one segment ends, the player has to search out the next segment (causing a pause in sound, most noticible when you have the distorto sound on).

Encode it so the DVD player can show the time. At present, there is no time code and that bugs me.

Keep the content same era oriented. In this case, the movies are from 1960, the cartoons seem to be from the 30's or early 40's. Most of the ads seems to be late 50's, early 60's and the intermission film has to be early 70's (it shows pictures of the moon landing, which took place in 69). Make volumes that have 50's films and exclusivly 50's clips, then others that have 60's and 70's films and clips. establish a verisimilitude that will help you believe you are time tripping to a drive in at the time period of the movie.

That also goes for the "distorto sound". Sometimes we hear comments from people inside the "virtual car" we are in. The comments seem too ironic and modern in tone. They don't talk like people from the era the movies are in. It's fun in an MST3K sort of way though.

This is a good series that has the potential to be something great. A really special way to see these B movie charms.

While they are thinking of "concept discs" over at Elite. They might also consider making a TV chiller theater style series. With vintage hosts and ads. This is the way I discovered many of these films in the 70's and it would be cool if someday a DVD presentation could reflect that.

GREAT DOUBLE FEATURE
This great release from Elite's Drive-In Discs range couples two of my all-time favorite B-movies together in one irresistable package!

THE WASP WOMAN tells the story of ageing cosmetics empire magnate Janice Starling (Susan Cabot) and her desire to hold onto her fading looks. Enter a kooky scientist who has developed a youth serum from the queen wasps, and who has the power to drag her - and the company - back into youthful vitality. Neeedless to say, poor Janice gets hooked on the stuff and turns into a wasp creature that must kill. Also featuring Barboura Morris and Fred Eisley.

THE GIANT GILA MONSTER is a campy little gem starring teen singing sensation Don Sullivan. When a giant lizard begins wreaking terror over the town's teens (who mainly sit around in hotrods making out), the monster finds a great way to appease its burgeoning appetite. Featuring Lisa Simone as Sullivan's just plain-annoying French girlfriend, the movie is a laughable horror flick with a most irritating song ("Laugh Children Laugh") that was actually penned by Sullivan!

Of course, the highlight is the "Drive-In" feature which couples the two films together along with "Betty Boop" and "Popeye" cartoons as well as concesssion stand ads, trailers and intermission announcements. Featuring Elite's famous DISTORTO sound system!

Fantastic and well worth a look.

Marilyn Monroe - The Diamond Collection II (Don't Bother to Knock / Let's Make Love / Monkey Business / Niagara / River of No Return)
Released in DVD by Fox Home Entertainme (14 May, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Marilyn Monroe
Some essential examples of the Marilyn Monroe mystique make up this second collection of titles from MM's years at Twentieth Century Fox. After sparkling in small roles, she burst upon the public consciousness in 1952, thanks to five films and a certain nude calendar. Two of the 1952 pictures, showing very different sides of the new actress, are included here. One is Monkey Business, Howard Hawks's raucous comedy about a youth serum, in which top-lined stars Cary Grant and Ginger Rogers regress to a state of adolescent abandon, with Monroe doing spot-on supporting duty. Don't Bother to Knock gives Marilyn her first lead role, in a tense little film noir; she's a babysitter with an unstable streak, a fine performance hinting at depths rarely touched in her career.

In Niagara, Monroe is a full-fledged sex goddess, a scheming wife tormenting husband Joseph Cotten in their cabin by the falls. This Technicolor slice of pseudo-Hitchcock is a fun location picture with a genuinely exciting climax. Otto Preminger's River of No Return has Marilyn livened up by the presence of costar Robert Mitchum, in a strong outdoorsy Western that catches the two stars in appealing form. By the time of 1960's Let's Make Love, MM looks tired. This backstage musical is more interesting as a time capsule than as a romance, although one number shines: "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." Less urgent for Monroe fans than the first Diamond Collection, this set is still a good one for the die-hards. --Robert Horton

Average review score:

" Bonus Features" disappointing
Although I give 5 stars for the quality and presentation of the main features, I was very disappointed in the Bonus Features (or lack of). Unlike the Diamond Collection 1, this collection has no Movietone newsreels (there's an excellent one on the Marilyn Collection VHS of "Let's Make Love"), there are no documentaries or deleted scenes like on the "Seven Year Itch" DVD, and a black and white(!!!) copy of the theatrical trailer to "Niagra" (even though there is an excellent colour copy on the VHS-Marilyn Collection. I get the feeling this collection was put together in a rush and not much time put into research to come up with some interesting things hidden in the vaults (also, where is the soundtrack to this collection like the excellent one that was put together for the last collection?). All and all, I still really enjoy seeing this collection, especially the wide screen versions of some of the movies ("River of No Return" was a treat as this was the first time I could see some scenes where Marilyn had been completly cut out with the "pan/scan" technique used on previous VHS tapes. An exciting joy to watch and see a great screen presence.

Worth the price of admission
Another beautifully restored tribute to one of the biggest stars of all time. (If you don't own the first diamond collection, get it.)

The best film of this package is "Don't bother to knock." It shows a different side to Marilyn, the one rarely seen. Usually typecast as the "chipper, dumb blonde," Marilyn shows off her dramatic talent in this dark film. She's more than a pretty face. She showcases her acting ability to the point where she is completely unrecognizable from her other films.

She'll blow you away with her comedic performance in "let's make love," and leave you mystified in the beautifully filmed "Niagara." I'm not a big western fan, but still found "River of no return" to be quite entertaining. "Monkey business" was my least favorite of the package, but that had more to do with the casting error of Cary Grant. He didn't suit his character, at least not to me.

Overall, a very entertaining movie set, much like the first. But "Don't bother to knock," offers the biggest bang for your buck. She'll mesmerize you with the best things about her: her talent and her mind.

After all, it takes more than a pretty face for a girl to coin the phrase, "I'm like this entire superstructure with absolutely no foundation. But I'm working on the foundation."

the most enigaging of af all movie series ever made
marilyn monroe is without a dought the most exlilerting star of the silver screen . heres may ratings for ech movie individualy

Mary and Joe
Released in DVD by (12 November, 2002)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: John R. Hamilton (II)
Average review score:

So bad, its blasphemous
This film is ... awful. One of the worst videos I have ever been forced to watch. The only redeeming quality of the movie was that it provided plenty of fodder for my friends and I to laugh about.

The movie claims to be a thought provoking something or other. Its not. The movie, full of plot holes large enough to drive a Buick into, was poorly done and definitely reflects its shoestring budget. Compared to this, an after-school special would come across as an ingenous work of art.

There are numerous inconsistencies. For example, the movie supposedly takes place before the birth of Christ. However, many of the characters refer to the Old Testament (there was no Old Testament before the birth of Christ). Couple that with the numerous mentions of "Bible" (Torah! Torah! They called it the Torah! There was no Bible, then!) and you've got one large piece of awfulness in your hands.

There's two things you can do now.
1. Don't buy the movie.
or
2. Buy the movie, but don't watch it alone. You'll want to take an orange peeler to your eye. If you buy it, make sure you watch it at every party you ever throw.

An Amazing thoughtful movie
This is an incredible re-telling of a familar story. This movie asks the question "what if we were still waiting for the messiah?"

In this movie..Our adorable couple Mary and Joe (who are totally devoted to "waiting for marriage") find themselves in the most amazing storyline. God has heard the prayers of His people and has sent "the Messiah" to a young NY woman from the house of David. She must somehow tell the man she loves that God has told her - she is pregnant with the Messiah.

From the first minute you can not help but love "Mary and Joe". Mary is so fresh, young, full of life... Joe is so in love with her.. The casting of the two lovebirds is what makes this film so great and the story is so powerful. It makes you consider - how did the real "Mary and Joe" feel going thought everything leading up to that awesome night.

More than anything this movie really makes you think.. which is what I consider the ear mark of a great film.

So good, it would be a shame to miss!
I'm Jewish, and I loved this film! "Mary and Joe" shows the Jewish roots of Jesus, and made me think ... perhaps this IS our long-awaited Messiah. Hats off to the filmmaker, who didn't put this story in the old robes. Contemporary, fresh, very professionally done. Give it a chance!

Mom, Can I Keep Her?
Released in DVD by New Concorde Home Video (24 April, 2001)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Fred Olen Ray
Average review score:

One star is too kind for this tripe!
The basic premise behind this drivel is simple. Kid's Mom has died, has new Step-mom, makes friends with gorilla, gorilla gets shot, gorilla gets better, everything works out just fine.
Except that is, for the film itself. Fan's of this genre of film would do better to avoid this and go for the far superior "Born to be Wild".
Even Malcolm in the Middle's Justin Berfield (Reece), who is usually pretty good, can't hold this dreadful film together.
He manages to pull off a couple of nice emotive scenes, but that's about it.
The gorilla is about as convincing as a trash can in a dress, the music is lousy, the direction is tired and dull, and the less said about the script the better. Not even worth catching on TV.

Innocent Humor What the world needs!
What ever happened to good movies like this? Justin Berfield age 12 is followed home by a 500lb gorilla, So what does any 12 year old do? Mom Can I Keep Her? You will Love this and Remember that time passes too fast not to spend more Quality Time with your Children!

A Masterpiece
No words can describe this film! I laughed, I cried, I farted. OH! That poor boy who has to take care of gorilla. Then it dies! It makes me cry now, because I know that that boy will never be the same again! I only wish it had lived and he had it until he got old and his bones were so weak so when it jumped on him his guts flew out of his stomach.

Buck Privates Come Home
Released in DVD by Image Entertainment (17 October, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Charles Barton
Starring: Bud Abbott and Lou Costello
In this sequel to 1941's Buck Privates, Bud and Lou are on their way home from the war in Europe (having joined the Army by mistake in the first film). Lou is smuggling home Evey, an adorable French orphan. When Evey is discovered and scheduled for deportation, the only way Bud and Lou can keep her is to get real jobs, a real home, and a real wife. They seek out Evey's "Aunt" Sylvia for help, but first her fiancée needs some quick cash to get his midget-car racer ready for the big race. Of course, the whole thing ends with Lou in the car, leading the cops on a hilarious chase. And don't worry--Evey finds a real home with Sylvia. Buck Privates Come Home is one of those rare sequels that may be better than the original. It's got plenty of routines, sight gags, and action--and only one of those musical interludes that frustrate dyed-in-the-wool A&C fans. The following year, Bud and Lou would team up with the same director and writers to make the classic Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein. --Geof Miller
Average review score:

Funny and Touching Film.
Bud and Lou return to the States and want to keep a young girl named Evie they adopted while in France, thus they enter world racing championship race to win a lot of money and become foster uncles to Evie. As expected things go wrong and Lou ends up in the race car, but in the end, things turn out all right. The useual laughs are also under-lined by some tender moments as Bud, Lou, and Evie slowly start to become a family.

Abbott & Costello in top form
Another rare case of a sequel topping the original. There is some effective sentiment to go along with the clowning. Along with 'The Time of Their Lives' and 'Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein', this one ranks as one of the boys' best.

This sequel is better
Buck Privates was very good but i think you will find this movie even better because its faster paced, good action, plenty of funny moments, and i believe it has better direction. I highly recommend this one. This is another Abbott and Costello film well worth watching. Not all of thier films are great but this one is so just enjoy it.

Just One Night
Released in DVD by Image Entertainment (05 June, 2001)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Alan Jacobs
Average review score:

A real gem among romantic comedies
Despite being a romantic comedy, this is not your average chick flick. It is free of the saccharin sentimentality that makes many such movies unpalatable to most men (and to me.) Quirky and surprising, this movie will make you cackle with laughter if you are willing to immerse yourself, even momentarily, in its magic fate-driven atmosphere. This has a beautiful, old-fashioned feel to it, in the vein of "Breakfast at Tiffany's"--sweet but edgy. Though the characters are somewhat lacking in depth, they are not in charm. Timothy Hutton is quite yummy as the brainy and ironic professor, and Maria Grazia is both charismatic and unfairly sexy. Skip the big-budget Hollywood dross and indulge in this understated and memorable treat.

Totally cool!!
This is a great off-beat comedy. Very well done... albiet just a tad strange. But hey different can be good... and in this case it's very good. Excellent love story, starts off slow and then speeds up to a blur of events that really keep things interesting. I would have to say it's a bit like "2000 Cigarettes" in it's style... everything happens in one night and it leaves you going "wow" at the end.

A romantic movie for everyone
Guys always seem to face a relationship hurdle, the movie to watch with the girlfriend(boyfriend). There aren't many movies out there that a couple can always enjoy together. Some women just can't take another viewing of Ronin or Get Carter (please find me one who can). This movie makes being a boyfriend movie viewer easy. Its witty, its funny, its well done, and at times it makes that single soap-opera tear very real. As you watch the series of events unfold, you just can't help but feel like you were Isaac, or Aurora. You feel for the characters and you feel for some reason, you start to feel for yourself. A must for any romantic at heart. A must for anyone who's a fan of good movies. A must for anyone who can't find a good DVD to watch in the dark as you cry over a lost soul. In general, a must.

Gator
Released in DVD by M G M, Inc (15 July, 2003)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Directors: James Best and Burt Reynolds
Starring: Burt Reynolds and Jack Weston
Average review score:

Gator
This was one of those movies I enjoyed watching, and would watch over again and again, it's quick paced, full of action, and light comedy, I would suggest this to anyone. I would have bought this along with White lightning, which came out before Gator. But Alas the Studio's blew it again, by only releasing this and White Lightning in full screen format.
So out of my basket they went. My message to the powers to be at the studio's if your going to release DVD's such as these good fun movies, release them in both widescreen and fullscreen, you might sell more copies. But what do I know I am only a consumer.

Enjoy the movie, not the format
I have always enjoyed Burt Reynolds movies and "Gator" is no exception. Oh sure, don't expect any of Burt's offerings to be placed in nomination for any awards, but they are extremely entertaining and always action oriented.

I'm however saddened that the powers-to-be have again chosen to put yet another Burt Reynolds DVD movie out in that dreaded "full screen" format. I just don't understand the rational for some of his best movies like "Sharky's Machine" and "Hooper" and now "Gator" to be released like this. To me, it is akin to buying a "Rolls Royce" with a VW engine.

You will thoroughly enjoy the movie if don't have any preference as to it's format, but I will never again knowingly purchase a DVD in full screen format when it should be in it's theatrically released format, because for me, that is one of the important reasons I am buying DVD's in the first place.

This review is for Floridians only.
Once upon a time, "Buddy" Reynolds, star footballer for Florida State was recuperating from an injury at home in Riviera Beach and attending Palm Beach Junior College to keep up with his studies. The head of the English department, Watson B. Duncan III, saw him one day on campus and asked him to read for a role in a play that P.B.J.C. was doing. According to Duncan, this was the beginning of Burt Reynolds' acting career. Years later, Burt honored his beloved teacher (Duncan was beloved by all who knew him) by having him play the press secretary to the Governor in his movie "Gator." The movie is a fun movie. All are having a great time. The cast is a hoot. Easy going Jerry Reed plays the heavy, Burt, the hero (of course), and the rest of the ensemble is a delight. This is light fair with a moral and it is a lot of fun to view.
