The Clash - Westway to the World
Released in DVD by Sony Music (Video) (21 October, 2003)
MPAA Rating:
Director: Don Letts

What it is
First of all, I would recommend this dvd. It is not super long, in fact I would say its a perfect length. Mostly it contains dialogue between the band members and individual recounts and commentary, not too much concert footage. If you watch the dvd closely you will understand the title of the dvd. damn those guys were cool.

Great film about a great band
Like the great rock documentaries The Kids Are Alright and The Filth and the Fury, Westway to the World is th story of a band (the Clash) told by those who were in the band (Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Topper Headon, and Paul Siminon). The Clash probably stayed together two years too many (they hung up their spurs in 1985), but their peak years from 1977-1981 were well worth it. Westway captures the exuberance of the punk period into which the Clash thrust themselves in 1977, and documents their own journey up til the departure of Jones (the McCartney to Strummer's Lennon) in the early Eighties.

I picked this up in the days after Joe Strummer's passing in December 2002, and I can safely say this is a fine tribute (albeit released before his untimely death). Strummer was easily the most lucid of the original punks (only John Lydon rivals him for candor and interesting insights into the era), and his interview segments are worth the price of admission alone.
The other band members aren't forgotten, though, and each details his own musical background and evolution in the band. Once the film is over, you find it sad to know that 1.) the band can never truly reunite and 2.) there will never be a band that can match them for expanding the range of punk.

So let the kiddies have their Avrils and their Blink-182. The Clash were the real deal, and this film captures just how damn special they really were. RIP Joseph Mellors

very good!!!
I love the clash, so of course, i had to buy this. I am soooooo happy i did. Westway to the world was incredibly entertaining. If you like the clash, you have got to buy this!!!

Cats Don't Dance
Released in DVD by Warner Home Video (06 May, 2003)
MPAA Rating: G (General Audience)
Director: Mark Dindal
Starring: Scott Bakula, Jasmine Guy, and Natalie Cole
Actually, cats do dance, and there are a lot of little cat feet tapping all over this odd animated film. Complaints about originality can't be leveled here; the film works within the confines of the musical genre, but there's never really been anything like this. Danny the cat is from Kokomo, and he's got a short list of things he has to do to become a big star in Hollywood. Unfortunately, he's unaware that animals, even talented ones, aren't even considered for showy parts in films. They're considered window dressing for humans, especially big stars such as Darla Dimple, the unlikely antagonist here. The music is by Randy Newman, and it's not really his best, but toe tapping may occur. The animation is reminiscent of an upgraded Animaniacs, and there's a frenetic, jittery sense to the scenes (mostly dealing with slapstick humor). Older fans of animation or bygone Hollywood will have much more to appreciate here than small children, but that's refreshing in itself. --Keith Simanton

Cats Don't Dance: how ironic!
The cats in this film actually DO dance-quite well! Especially since all the "choregraphy" was done by Gene Kelly (who was totally for the idea). This may be one of those cartoons that has a lot of humor only adults would get. I thought it was great how the included 30's actors, like Mae West, Cary Grant and Clark Gable. The lines were great!
My favorite character was Sawyer, the cat who Danny showed her talents. "So much for preservin' the species," she says. The film's songs are overall great. My favorites are Tell me Lies, Hollwood, and Animal Jam. The only part of the latter one that I like is the dancing sequence performed by Danny and Sawyer.
Bottom line: SEE IT!!

Superb! A musical that would make Disney cry.
When this film released in 1997, nobody paid attention to it, because Disney's Hercules was the animated feature film everyone assumed to be better. Many animators would prefer Cats Don't Dance over Hercules, why? It is a tap dancing musical that really plays with the art of animation. The movie is directed by Mark Dindal (Emperor's New Groove) and the choreography is by the famous broadway dancing veteran Gene Kelley! It is also the last film involves Gene Kelley. Overall, the animation is wonderful, loveable characters, and unforgettable songs. This is a movie for all ages of animation or musical fan.

Wow!
"Cats Don't Dance" really took me by surprise. What a clever idea, flawlessly executed! If you enjoy musicals of the 40s and 50s, and if you enjoy bold, fast-paced animation, then this is the movie for you. Set in the 1940s, a naive but talented cat moves from the Mid-West to Hollywood, hoping to sing and dance his way to the top. His hopes are quickly obstructed by the Hollywood machine, which is dominated by Darla Dimple - a hilarious Shirley Temple parody. The villainous Dimple finally gets what she deserves, as does the hopeful Danny the cat. A true gift from Warner Brothers to animated film lovers and their children. The movie really clicks with my kids.

The Story of G.I. Joe
Released in DVD by Image Entertainment (23 May, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: William A. Wellman
Starring: Burgess Meredith, Robert Mitchum, and Freddie Steele
As they march into yet another devastated Italian town, one of the soldiers of Company C neatly sums up the average infantryman's experience of World War II: "When this war's over, I'm gonna buy me a map and find out where I've been." Released less than three months after the German surrender, The Story of G.I. Joe is a gritty portrayal of the reality of war: defeat as well as victory, blood and mud as well as glory.

William Wellman's film was based on the newspaper columns of war correspondent Ernie Pyle (played by Burgess Meredith), and through him we get to know a small group of ordinary infantrymen as he follows them from North Africa into Italy. They're led by Captain Bill Walker (Robert Mitchum), who claims he earned his rank by living longer than the other lieutenants, and Sergeant Warnicki (Freddie Steele), a tough, gruff career soldier who carries a carefully wrapped recording of his son's voice across Italy in search of a gramophone. The soldiers--many played by real veterans of the Italian campaign--mature as we get to know them, becoming battle-hardened but increasingly exhausted.

Meredith is effective as Pyle, who quickly becomes something of a company mascot. He earns the respect of the GIs by sticking around when the shells start to fly, and he becomes an even bigger hit when he brings them all turkey and cigars at Christmas. But if this quintessential ensemble piece belongs to anyone, it's Mitchum as the battle-weary C.O. Fiercely loyal to his men, he feels every death as a personal loss but refuses to flinch from his duty. Mitchum brings an extraordinary depth of emotion to his performance, and he received a well-deserved Oscar nomination.

Much of the film's strength lies in the contrast between the human side of war--bored men trying to stay sane in cramped dugouts--and the inhuman randomness of its destruction. After every battle, ambush, or artillery attack there's a terrible moment when we wait to see who is dead--"We lost three," says Sergeant Warnicki as a few men stagger in from a patrol. The nerve-shatteringly realistic battle sequences bring to mind Saving Private Ryan, and The Story of G.I. Joe is a strong competitor with Spielberg's acclaimed film for the title of greatest-ever war movie.

Several of the soldiers who appear in the film, along with Ernie Pyle himself, died in action before The Story of G.I. Joe was released. Fifty-five years later it still stands as a memorial to them and to all of the ordinary men and women who died in World War II. --Simon Leake

Ok film barely, Objective Burma better
I've been watching war movies obsessively since I was probably age six or seven (born 1971). Once in a while a war picture becomes available that I haven't seen, like The Story of G.I. Joe. So I added it to my collection. This movie is filled with great locations, nice filming, strong images, and a very solemn downbeat realism unique to war movies at the time (I usually love this kind of stuff, and think the Korean war movie Men In War is one of the best accomplishments of this style, as also the WWII movies, Hell Is For Heores and When Trumpets Fade). Based on true experiences of war correspondent Ernie Pyle, the movie focuses on Ernie Pyle (played very well by Burgess Meredith), as well as Captain Bill Walker (played by a young and awesome Robert Mitchum), and the unsung grunts in his company. When the movie came out in 1945, the real Ernie Pyle had already been killed in the Pacific war, having left the battlefields of Europe to report on the men in the Pacific.

The movie tries to take a very personal approach towards the men and their experience, focusing more on the men and their feelings then on the actual experiences they have. Very little action in fact actually appears in this war DRAMA. The movie was nominated in 1945 for Best Score, Best Song, Best Supporting actor (Robert Mitchum), and even Best Screenplay. How the times sure can influence some people.

In my opinion, the fine acting talents of Robert Mitchum, Burgess Meredith, and a few others scattered through the picture are the main strength of this movie and carry it along, but just barely. The movie suffers in many places. Several people sound stiff and wooden, as if they are giving out memorized lines instead of experiencing them. This plagues the movie. Many scenes that attempt to portray group exhaustion and disgruntlement end up drug out, in need of better acting, and perhaps editing. Morale is portrayed as low even when it probably would not be low. The movie meanders on and on in many places with a loose script that neglects the rich subject matter available. The script went through several hands in the process of being made and it shows. The need for rehearsal also shows.

On a final note, one thing that I found awful was something contained in the notes inside the DVD box itself. Pyle is solely credited with creating the portrait of the G.I. as the common man gone to war, the suffering servant of democracy who triumphs over death through perseverance. While Pyle may in fact have been the most reverend correspondent of WWII as they also claim, and while the DVD notes may also be true in the claim that Hollywood embraced "his portrait" of the common G.I. in scores of films down to Saving Private Ryan, it's a far stretch to claim as they do that this image started solely with this movie and with Pyle. A far better movie in IMHO is Objective Burma staring Errol Flynn (a rousing action/drama), which actually accomplishes many of the things that The Story of G.I. Joe tried to do. According to the IMDB, Objective Burma was released on FEB 17, 1945 and The Story of G.I. Joe premiered on June 18, 1945 and released on July 13, 1945. But if you like meandering character studies like the WWII movie Walk in the Sun (which the Story of G.I. Joe outdoes by a long shot IMHO), then who knows, you might like this as well. For a better WWII movie with Robert Mitchum, try The Enemy Below!

A WWII classic.
Burgess Meredith is perhaps a little too beatific in his portrayal of war correspondent Ernie Pyle, the much-beloved Pulitzer Prize winning war correspondent who brought the stories of everyday American soldiers home to readers back in the States. The Army infantrymen revered Pyle the way they loved cartoonist Bill Mauldin, who also had the guts and humility to slog it out in the mud with them, and let the folks back home know how they met the war with an all-American mix of grit, fatalism and good humor. The production values of this movie, with distracting backdrops and obviously artificial studio sets, don't hold up that well in comparison to the hyper-real war flicks that came in its wake, yet few movies have captured just how grubby, desolate and miserable the day-to-day lives of the ground soldiers could be. Also, an extended battle sequence filmed in the real-life rubble of a recently "liberated" Italian town is remarkable for showing just how extensive the war damage was -- it was total warfare, and it's amazing that Europe ever recovered from the devastation. A surprisingly bleak, if somewhat episodic, story, framing an iconic, groundbreaking war movie against which all others have to be measured. (One note of complaint: the DVD version has shamefully little in the way of special features, just one brief clip of the real Ernie Pyle taping a news reel interview with a couple of G.I.s saying "hi" to the folks back home, and a series of illegible reproductions of old newspaper columns under his byline... It's really inexcusable that a full-length documentary about Pyle and his reporting was not also included... Oh, well. It's still a good film.)

Best World War II movie ever made
"G.I. Joe" can only be compared to "Saving Private Ryan," and it manages to be even more effective even though it doesn't have all of the cinematic license for violence and raw language. It makes all other WWII pale in comparison because it doesn't wave the flag. It only tells the true, gut-level story of men in battle. They are brave, self sacrificing and dedicated without the airs of phony patriotism, safely indulged in by those not fighting. They are honest in expressing their fears and questions, and when one of their brothers goes down, their sadness and regret knows no limit. Wellman's masterpiece and Robert Mitchum's best performance.

A Fight that lasts for days
I love this Dvd and the other when Goku and Fieza starts fighting. This is the one time Goku trains to fight a powerful fighter. Every other villain fighter is like impossible to beat with ridiculous power levels and moves that are WAAAAAAAAY better than the moves of the super sayin's. Majin buu can turn them into food and take their power and moves from them by eating them and become stronger. Baby or as some people say Babie out does Majin Buu a 1000 to 1 in the dragon ball gt version. he can jump into people bodys and possess them and then jump outside them while leaving eggs or seeds in them which turns them in his slaves. and baby does that to some of he Z fighters and he takes over vegeta's body. but is then beatin when goku of givin power by all the people in the universe or somethin like that. and then he does a power move like the kamahamah wave and then baby leaves the body of vegeta and is then destoryed.and then back in the DBZ version Galic jr. is invincible and can't be beatin and the only way he is beatin is when he is sucked into the dead zone where you can't get out. butsome how he gets out and then gets sucked back in and also Cooler who later on became a machine become impossible to beat because he can clone himself into the 1000s and the only reason why he is beatin is because he trys to take the power from Vegeta and Goku while they are super sayins and then the big Gete star overlaods and brakes because they had to much power. They Cooler fights them in his real form and then geats destoryed. and then cell who could suck peopl up through his tail and take their power from them. kinda like majin buu. All these villians could be cut in half , blown up into 1000s peices and killed all types of ways and still come back to life. But Frieza is like the only normal villain that can't come back when he i destoryed like that. him and super 17 , broly , androids and the of the dragons of the black dragon balls. frieza and goku fight for what it seems like for days and that is why i like this dvd so much.

Awesome!
The Last Wish - Guru and the people of Namek have been brought back to life, and the dragon Porunga has reappeared to grant the last of three wishes. While a newly enraged Goku resumes his onslaught against the evil Frieza, Dende races to make the final wish of King Kai's plan. But Frieza has his own wish in mind, and he too speeds toward the dragon! Can anything stand in the way of Frieza finally being granted immortality?

Duel on a Vanishing Planet - With all of his friends evacuated to the safety of Earth, Goku has chosen to remain on the doomed planet of Namek to finish Frieza once and for all. But Frieza refuses to go down quietly, and it looks as though the mighty Saiyan still has the fight of his life on his hands. And with Namek about to explode, there seems no way for Goku to defeat Frieza and escape from the planet in time! Has Goku made the greatest - and final - mistake of his life?

Pathos of Frieza - Time is growing short for Goku, as each passing second brings Namek closer to it's ultimate destruction. But the Super Saiyan's powers seem to know no limits, and it looks as though the once unstoppable Frieza has final been outmatched! As Goku's strength continues to increase with every blow, it appears that the battle has at last reached its conclusion! ...or has it?

Frieza Defeated!! - As his desperation grows, Frieza's attempts to destroy Goku become more and more reckless. Goku's power proves to be far superior, however, and he easily counters the evil tyrant's attacks. It seems that Frieza's greatest fear has been realized - defeat at the hands of a Super Saiyan! But the clock is ticking! Can Goku escape Namek before it explodes?

SIC SEMPER TYRRANIS
"And Thus to Tyrants." This DVD features the episodes in which Super Saiya-jin Goku unleashes his inexorable fury on Frieza. Against the backdrop of a dying planet, these two great warriors exhange blows, determining the fate of the universe. But the proud, evil tyrant is no match for the legendary warrior, the first in 1,000 years.

Shen Long revives the victims of Frieza's malice on Earth, leaving only Son Goku and Frieza battling; only minutes before Namek's destruction. As the Super Saiya-jin continues his onslaught Frieza becomes desperate and hurls ultra-sharp Destructo disks, becoming ever more reckless.

Ultimately, the Evil Lord Frieza must taste his own medicine. Will Goku finish him off and escape in time? If Goku can't do it, no one can! Find out, in DRAGONBALL Z.

Sometimes They Come Back
Released in DVD by Vidmark/Trimark (24 September, 1999)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Tom McLoughlin
Starring: Tim Matheson and Brooke Adams
And sometimes they come back... for the franchise! Aaaaaaaaargh! Though a TV movie franchise is a somewhat subliminal thing. This double-feature DVD contains one movie based on a story by Stephen King, and another movie based loosely on the first movie. More of a variations on a theme than a continuance. In Sometimes They Come Back, Tim Matheson is made to relive a boyhood tragedy that claimed the life of his brother when the group of bullies who waylaid him in a train tunnel way back when come back from the dead to settle an old score. Convincingly scary as this is, side B is even better, having upped the ante from the demonic bullies of the first movie to the satanic worshippers of the second. This time it's Michael Gross who needs to learn that you can't escape your past, having as a kid thwarted the satanists who claimed the life of his sister, and who lately have returned to kill his mother and are now after his daughter. The effects are great here, with a standout being the formation of a demon from a pool of blood. One of the Arquette clan, Alexis Arquette, as head of the satanic ritualists (Vinnie Barbarino meets Marilyn Manson), is a kind of special effect all by himself, grinning and mugging with uncontained glee at the most splatter-heavy moments. Followed by a sequel, Sometimes They Come Back... for More. --Jim Gay

A Great Movie For Horror Lovers
This Movie Is Great! Both Of Them. I Like Both Of Them. I Thing The People Who Like "Sometimes They Come Back" And "Sometimes They Come Back Again" Should Try "Sometimes They Come Back For More"

A perfect 10!
This movie was extrememly fun and exciting. Although it's considered horror, to me it was just pure action and entertainment from start to finish! I love the way 3 cool greasers from the '60s come back in the '90s and are exactly the same as when they died in '63. How cool those greasers were and the way all the other kids marveled at their charisma in the classroom was cool! It was also cool how that kid Jimmy became a man and then stood up to them. Those greasers and their hotrod were so cool. This movie is an A plus! Rock on Stphen King!

I love this thriller
Sometimes They Come Back, a thriller tim matheson plays Jimmy Norman plays a teacher from Chicago , returns to his old town after 20 years ,where his brother Wayne was murdered by a gang of hooligans in a spooky train tunnel the hooligans get killed by the train in the car and they want revenge, now 27 years later Richard Lawson, North , and Vincent all come back one by one to his classroom after the murders of innocent Hs students. and then attack his house and go after his son with the ghostly black hotrod and want to replay the whole thing over again i liked this movie i bought it .really cool movie , highly recommended and really good.

Foul Play
Released in DVD by (14 July, 1978)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Colin Higgins
Starring: Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase
Not short on murder, mayhem, or any other screwball '70s conventions, Foul Play is a wonderful vehicle for Goldie Hawn. She plays Gloria, a librarian "ready to take a chance again," who ends up the target of an assassination ring. Chevy Chase, fresh off of Saturday Night Live, does the closest thing to real acting he would ever achieve (okay, maybe Fletch) as Tony, the cop assigned to protect Gloria. Dudley Moore made an indelible impression on American audiences as Stanley Tibbets, a surprisingly kinky symphony conductor. But it's the quirky things that make this film: the grandmothers playing Scrabble with expletives, Burgess Meredith's snake Esme, the old Japanese couple in the back of the careening limo. From the opening credits with Barry Manilow crooning the title song, this is a fond trip down memory lane. --Keith Simanton

Forgotten Goldie/Chevy/Dudley Classic
Dashing Chevy, kookie Goldie and Dudleys performance in his 'pad'. Add a dash of intrigue (which by todays standards will appear dull) and you have a mixture of laughs and mayhem. Its a great early vehicle for all actors and so sad that its been missing from the shelves for such a long time. Maybe dull by todays standards, but well worth the laughs that it still brings. Dudley steals scenes with his performance and I forgot how good Chevy Chase is/was and Goldie as usual with super humour timing. Scenes not to be missed, Dudleys disco pad!!! Keep an ear out for some of the lines. I think its time they brought this forgotten classic back.

Great movie.
This movie is very funny, clean humor and suspenseful. I have yet to see a movie with a balance of comedy, suspense and drama. Plus it has great actors like Chevy Chase, Goldie Hawn, Dudley Moore, and the loveable, Burgess Meredith. I would say Chevy Chase's and Goldie Hawn's best movie, although, very few people know about this movie. Excellent!!!

Goldie & Chevy's laugh in!
ANOTHER Hilarious film from the makers of silver streak.
This film is one of my favourites
Iam patiently awaiting its arrival on dvd
Hopefully they might get chevy chase &
Goldie Hawn to do a commentry track
Now that would be something.

Theirs so many funny scenes in this film
The two old ladies playing scrabble laden with
expletives.
My favourite being dudley moore's
Bachelor Pad!!

Two Moon Junction
Released in DVD by Columbia/Tristar Studios (18 April, 2000)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Zalman King
Starring: Sherilyn Fenn and Richard Tyson
This camp spectacle stars Sherilyn Fenn (Boxing Helena) as an upper-crust Southern belle who abandons the posh life for sex on the road with a carny worker. Naturally, the older folk (Burl Ives, Louise Fletcher) take exception. Typically silly, soft-porn stuff from director Zalman King (Wild Orchid), this erotic joke of a movie is good for putting one's busy brain on hold for awhile. Colorful support from Kristy McNichol as a cowgirl, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and the late Hervé Villechaiz (Fantasy Island). --Tom Keogh
Average review score:

Kristy McNichol in all her glory!
April (Sherilyn Fenn, [Twin Peaks] has just completed college. She has a boyfirend played by Martin Hewitt (Endless Love [1981]), but she still fantasies about marrying a most handsome man. She meets a carnival worker, well tanned with his shirt off and blues jeans on. His name is Perry (played by Richard Tyson). While her boyfriend is away on a trip, April goes to the carnival again to see Perry, but keeps her distance. The next day, she finds Perry in the shower in her house. And so the tug-o-war begins. Dabbs Greer (Little House on the Prarie, The Green Mile [1999]) and Herve Villechaize (Fantasy Island) play carnival workers. Louise Fletcher (Brainstorm [1983]), Burl Ives (Cat on A Hot Tin Roof [1958]) have roles. Kristy McNichol is hilarious in her role as a bisexual cowgirl who can drive a diesel truck.

Incredible!
This is one of my favorite movies - has been for years. I own this one and have watched it 1000 times. It is hauntingly erotic - with an ending that leaves you wondering. Sherilyn and Richard are a beautiful pair..I LOVE THIS MOVIE!

This Movie Rocks,,,
The more I watch it..the more it rocks! I keep thinking why can't all movies be more like this one. Here's the deal, every true guy out there would kill to be like Tyson, I used to work with a guy years ago who looked exactly like this character, chicks would throw themselves at him (now he works for a railroad, has three kids and weighs 250 pds,) but besides the point I was always enveyous of this guy. Fenn is just too great in this movie, she did a great acting job and regardless what some of the critics thought (Ebert, like he could EVER understand a movie like this, even in his wildest dreams) it had a good plot, it had great sex, it had mystery, but it was done extremely tasteful. This is far far from porn, some say soft-porn, I think it's a masterpiece, it could never be mainstream (for the sex) but it made me think how valuable and exciting life was at that time in life when you had everything ahead of you and could afford the risks and didn't worry about the outcomes.

Zoids - The Battle Begins (Vol. 1)
Released in DVD by Geneon Entertainment (09 April, 2002)
MPAA Rating: G (General Audience)
Inspired by a classic video game, the animated Zoids comes with a ready-made and uniquely appealing story line and characters. Set on the desert planet Zi, where mechanized robot beasts known as Zoids are piloted by humans in fierce battles against one another, this episodic anime adventure series centers on a 16-year-old junk dealer named Bit Cloud. The unlikely choice of a catlike Zoid hero named Liger Zero to be the latter's intuitive pilot, Bit becomes a champion fighter for the warrior group Team Blitz. The four tales on this program explore Bit and Liger's feats of derring-do, as well as Bit's struggle for acceptance by his teammates. The fights are fun, the romantic conflicts are juicy, and Liger's courageous heart is a thing to behold. The show plays regularly on the Cartoon Network. --Tom Keogh

DISCRACEFUL ANIME!
This is quite possibly the WORST anime I have ever seen in years. The battles are boring, the characters are stupid and act like they've been smoking marajuana and Leena is 100% skank! THE BLITZ TEAM WINS ALL THE TIME! I WISH THEY'D ...LOSE FOR ONCE!!!!!!!

Good, but lacking something...
This DVD is not one of the best made. It doesn't have Subtitles and it isn't even in any other language. Not even the animation is up to par. I watched the show on TV and even the animation on it was better. At times it seem that the producers had skipped over scenes to save money[in the 2nd episode the liger does strike laser claw and all it shows is it hitting the red comet an than magically flying in the air and landing on the ground]. Some people[like me] are strict otaku fans who can only have the original, un-messed-up-with version. For all you people who want a good quality DVD, search somewhere else. And for all the other Otakus you better look somewhere for the subbed version. All in all don't buy it unless your a fool who wants to know the story by wasting your money rather than reading it for free off the internet.

Good but it gets better
The first few episodes are good and inform you of the characters, but the last few episodes are by far the best. It's not as thought provoking as titles like Gundam Wing but it's still fun to watch. This is wonderful for children and people who just enjoy anime, especially if you like more comedic anime with a bit of action.

Knightriders
Released in DVD by Anchor Bay Entertainment (19 August, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: George A. Romero
Starring: Ed Harris and Gary Lahti
After years of dominating the midnight circuit with the likes of Night of the Living Dead, Martin, and Dawn of the Dead, George A. Romero took a departure from bona fide horror films to make this naturalistic tale of a traveling troupe of motorcycle-riding jousters. (Think Hell's Angels on Wheels goes to the Renaissance Faire.) While this may sound ludicrous on the surface, the film emerges as a powerful character study. When the success of their jousting tournaments--in which armor-clad bikers go at each other with real lances for the entertainment of county fair crowds--attracts the attention of bigtime promoters, creeping commercialism threatens to spoil their delicately constructed Camelot. The troupe is a mirror of King Arthur's court, complete with its King (Ed Harris), Merlin (Brother Blue), and Morgan le Fay (Tom Savini). Only they ride motorcycles, and try to knock each other off with maces. Ed Harris turns in a topnotch performance as Billy, the focus of the film, who goes progressively nuts as it becomes apparent he's losing his grip on the troupe (unconsciously playing out the final days of Camelot). Knightriders is thoroughly engrossing during the jousting tournaments and whenever Ed Harris is onscreen, but is less successful in-between, when toeing the line of the Arthurian Legend makes the film too mannered. And at 145 minutes, the film could have been trimmed a bit. But why cavil when presented with the spectacle of Ed Harris spinning slowly out of control? Watch for a cameo by Stephen King himself, playing a spectator debunking the jousting tournaments as "all fake," through ample mouthfuls of his hoagie. --Jim Gay
Average review score:

One of Romero`s Best Work as a Director.
When a Troupe of Motorcyclists, who are members of a Traveling Renaissance Faire. They move Town to Town with Great Audiences Each Time from Oridinary People. They used Amor, Wielding Lances, Battle-Axes, Maces and Boardwoods. They are the Perfect Medieval Jousting Tournament Group. The rule of the Game, if Someone of the another Gang lead by Arthur (Tom Savini), if they win, He will become the new King of Camelot, if he doesn`t win. Billy (Ed Harris) will always stay King of Camelot. But Billy almost believes too real about the real world of today society of Camelot is being Renewed. While they get national attention much to the dismay of the Current King of This Camelot and the Crew asked themselves, Why they are There doing, What they Loved in the First Place.

Never heard of George Romero!
I never heard of George Romero, and vaguely know of his day or dawn of dead series.

I loved this movie because it was a great movie...the story, the characters, the music, especially the beautiful song during Ed Harris's (King Billy) funeral.

I was just browsing in the Video Store and came across this gem. (am a fan of Ed Harris).

Truly a great movie, it you love movies.

Sometimes you get lucky.
Sometimes you get lucky, and are a fan of a great filmaker, and on the hunch that anything they make will be gold, you go out and get a film and are treated to a gem like this.

No this film is not for everyone. Yet perhaps it is? I know all about where the movie came from and what inspired it. I belong to the SCA. This film captured, at least for me, exactly what I joined the SCA for. A kind of escape from reality, without being totaly delusional and dysfunctional.

It's a joyride into many peoples ideals of getting away from it all, and doing your own thing. At the same time the ideals of Arthurian legends are lived, not just imagined.

As movies go it is quite possibly the best example I have ever seen of what a truly gifted writer/director can do with the least amount of money and hype. Nothing else I could say would do justice to this film. It's now one of my favorites of all time, and I don't need to justify why. Simply pick up this movie, give it a good sturdy chance at winning your heart, and you will find something about this movie that will really pull you in. Nuff said, what are you waiting for go get this movie :)
