Great stuff.

Crime Story (Pilot Episode)
Released in DVD by Anchor Bay Entertainment (19 September, 2000)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director: Abel Ferrara
Though Hill Street Blues got all the awards and Miami Vice got all the attention, for some viewers it's the short-lived Crime Story (the second series produced by Vice's Michael Mann) that stands as tall as the great cop show of the 1980s. Set to a gritty rock & roll beat--with Del Shannon's "Runaway" providing the perfect theme song--the series chronicled the early '60s rise of gangster Ray Luca (Anthony John Dennison) and his hounding by hard-boiled policeman Michael Torrello (Denis Farina, who will never have another part this good). Save for the show's eventual relocation to Las Vegas, the Chicago-based pilot, expertly helmed by cult director Abel Ferrara, lines up all the elements that made Crime Story a classic: vivid performances, slick photography, brutal violence, and a genuine sense of the moral murk cops can be sucked into when they feel that any method is justified. Indeed, it's often Torrello, given to back-alley beatings and possessive stares at his wife (Darlanne Fleugel), who seems the scarier of the two leads; Luca kills without compunction, but with an assassin's dispassionate celerity. Such complexity, combined with the exciting action scenes, makes for wonderful viewing, however much it hurt with the Nielsen ratings. --Bruce Reid

gritty Ellroy-esque crime show
Crime Story is a a lean, mean cop show drama that features politically incorrect police officers battling it out with nasty criminals.

It's a testimony to Michael Mann's reputation at the time that Crime Story was even greenlighted. NBC would have never gone for the casting of Dennis Farina, with his pockmarked face and lack of acting experience, had Mann been a neophyte producer with no proven track record. The choice of cult film director Abel Ferrara (pre-Bad Lieutenant) must have also freaked out network execs. His previous films included a deranged psycho gruesomely killing people with a power tool and a rape survivor viciously killing the men who attacked her with a .45 pistol.

And yet, the final product proves that Mann's instincts were right on the money. Farina delivers the hard-boiled dialogue with the perfect amount of intensity (at one point Farina says menacingly to one goon, "you hurt anybody else, when this is all over I'm gonna find what you love the most and I'm gonna kill it. Your mother, your father, your dog. Don't matter what it is -- it's dead."). You can see it in his eyes and the way he barks out orders that this a no-nonsense guy who isn't going to let anything get in the way of his job.

Ferrara directs with the same proficient skill of crime auteur, Don Siegel. Crime Story depicts a harsh world where life is cheap and characters will do anything -- even if it means bending or breaking the law -- to achieve their goals.

One of the most striking aspects about Crime Story is that it feels like it was ripped right from the pages of a James Ellroy novel. It is even more surprising that this show was done before Ellroy had written his famous L.A. Quartet of books that features L.A. Confidential, which Crime Story most closely resembles. The author claims that he hadn't seen the show until after he wrote these novels but he does admit to being a fan since then. This, of course, begs the question, when is someone going to reunite Farina and Ferrara to do a proper Ellroy adaptation?

The DVD disappoints in the extras department. No audio commentaries from Ferrara or Mann (both of whom have done them before), or even the show's creator, Chuck Adamson. A retrospective featurette would have been nice but instead we are left with nothing.

If you are willing to overlook the appalling lack of extras and are a fan of Michael Mann or James Ellroy's fiction then this is definitely worth checking out. Hopefully, the folks at Anchor Bay will redeem themselves with the first season of Crime Story that their website says is due out in July of this year with the second season coming out in December.

Awsome TV series
I love Crime Story. I grew up watching it as a kid and I'am glad I finally found it at Amazon. This pilot movie rock and rolls. Really gets you in the mood to watch the series coming out November 4, 2003.

Before the Soprano's there was...CRIME STORY!!!
Crime Story. It was Miami Vice but for Italians. If you don't know what I'm saying then forgedboudit!!! The only reason the Soprano's is good is because Crime Story paved the way. Every Italian household should have a poster of Crime Story next to their framed pictures of the Pope and Elvis Presley.

the dice man
I purchased this movie because I am a Sheila E fan and I thought that I would hate it because I don't think that the dice man is very funny so I was surprised that it was an ok movie; good thing too, because if you blink you will sho nuff miss Sheila

Excellent for Dice fans!
This movie is just a fun movie to watch! Clay is amazing in his ability to be the "ELVIS" of the 90's and beyond. It is too bad he quit making movies. Also would love to see this in DVD??? Let's get it done people ok?! Badda bing baby!

A Guilty Pleasure! Ya Hear!
Ford Fairlane is one of those movies that is a guilty pleasure- The off color humor is the kind that you laugh and shake your head saying " I can't believe they said that"- but you are belly laughing while you say it. ... He lights up the screen and you can't take your eyes off of him. He is very funny in this movie. He has some classic one-liners and shows a lot of the "Dice" character in the Ford Fairlane character. - he also shows a side to Ford that has a heart of gold. The movie is very well made with a great soundtrack and it is full of all things "1990"- cameos by Popular music artists at the time, and some very funny jokes about the stars of that time. It is a fast paced film and it feels like you are watching a comic book- which is what this is all about. The story is basically Ford searching for a missing groupie and then discovers some shady things going on at a Record Company. Can't tell you anymore than that.
REMEMBER ONE THING- This film was released at the height of the controversy with DIce. ... Now I think a lot of critics and people in general see what a funny comedy this is- top notch entertainmaent. Rent it, buy it- enjoy it.

Casual Sex?
Released in DVD by Image Entertainment (17 October, 2000)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Geneviève Robert
Starring: Lea Thompson and Victoria Jackson
Never have the 1980s felt so painfully time-warped. This 1988 movie, which was directed by Geneviève Roberts and adapted by Wendy Goldman and Judy Toll from their stage play, is proof as to why we've rarely heard their names again. Casual Sex? is an oxymoron of a title that chronicles the plight of two best-friends-since-childhood who are suffering from celibacy in the AIDS-addled '80s. One, Stacy (Lea Thompson), misses the easy promiscuity of the past though she longs for a guy who is a true friend. Melissa (Victoria Jackson from Saturday Night Live) has only had sex with two men--the second of whom was her fiancé, and she longs for her first orgasm. When they decide to take a holiday to the Oasis Spa in order to find some nice guys, they have little notion that they're about to find the wrong Mr. Right(s). Combine the tired premise with some asides to the screen (that probably worked better on stage) and a couple of role-playing fantasies, and Casual Sex? is proof that a movie on this topic might be written by women, but it still might not have anything new or groundbreaking to reveal. Casual Sex? ultimately pairs one of its protagonists with comic Andrew Dice Clay, who plays a Jersey thug named "The Vin Man," and it's embarrassing to watch him mug his way through the film. With such lines as "You and I have more in common now that we're both afraid of sex" and "Not being attracted to anybody scares me more than AIDS," viewers will wonder if these two have a brain in their heads at all. They ultimately come across as less than enlightened about sex and love and seem--along with the movie itself--more than a little desperate. --Paula Nechak

Great Movie For A "Just The Girls" Night!
This movie makes me laugh everytime I watch it! Lea and Victoria have not been in any movies recently, but this movie will make you wish they were! If you are looking for a smile, good laugh, and romance---this is the movie you want to see! Every guy in the film reminds you of a guy you have met before; and every conversation in the film reminds you of one you have had with your friends before as well! As a DVD, it rates OK because there is no behind the scences information, etc. I wish there was because every so often it appears as if they cut out a small bit of a scene---and I am the type who want to know what it was! I rate this movie as an excellent one to see with your friends---it will bring up memories you will die laughing about!

Nice 80's Feel Good Comedy
i first watched this film back in college when it first came out and loved it then. Even now i have the dvd and yes, its dated, but so what? it's still a fun nice little film that raises a smile. Lea Thompson is believable and honest in a light yet human comedy so if you're looking for 90 mins or so of escapism then give it a view! You won't be disappointed!

Excellent Movie- Wrong Title. Dice is Wonderful !
This movie is funny, romantic, silly, intelligent.Too bad the title is so wrong for it as this movie is not about casual sex but the desire for a real relationship. Andrew Dice CLay is wonderful as the "Vin Man" who is really a loving man who just wants to meet the right woman. Hollywood overlooked Andrew Dice Clay's perfect performance & still has not put him in another excellent role that fit him so well & at this point his looks aren't what they were in this 1987 romantic comedy. Victoria Jackson & Lea Thompson are just right in their roles as love-seeking women in the latter 1980's of safe sex- not just to avoid STDS such as the Aids disease but to also avoid getting emotionally involved with the wrong guy- and to avoid getting hurt yet again. This is an excellent comedy on dvd although it has NO extra features so maybe in the future there will be a Special edition as this is already it's 2nd time on dvd.

Pretty in Pink
Released in DVD by Paramount Home Video (13 May, 2003)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Howard Deutch
Starring: Molly Ringwald and Jon Cryer
The era of Molly Ringwald's profitable collaboration with writer-producer-director John Hughes (Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club) was at its peak with this 1986 film (directed by Howard Deutch but in every sense part of the developing Hughes empire). Ringwald plays a high school girl on the budget side of the tracks, living with her warm and loving father (Harry Dean Stanton) and usually accompanied by her insecure best friend (Jon Cryer). When a wealthy but well-meaning boy (Andrew McCarthy) asks her out, her perspective is overturned and Cryer's character is threatened. As was the case in the mid-'80s, Hughes (who wrote the script and produced the film) brought his special feel for the cross-currents of adolescent life to this story. In its very commercial way, it is an honest, entertaining piece about growing pains. The attractive supporting cast (many of whom are much better known now) does a terrific job, and Ringwald and Cryer have excellent chemistry. --Tom Keogh
Average review score:

PRETTY in 2003 too
John Hughes and his Brat Pack pumped out some very worthy films and this is no exception. It is a shame that Hollywood pestered the group until they disbanded and by and large none of them work now. It's a real shame b/c you watch these films and you can see they had serious talent.

A throughouly enjoyable love story. Not too heavy, but some teen angst all the same.

True-to-life teen angst
I liked the main character, Andie (Molly Ringwald) a lot & I was rooting for her throughout the entire film . Maybe it's because she reminded me a lot of myself when I was in high school. She has her own unique style, which she gets flack for by the popular girls. "Where'd you get that - the 5 & dime store?" the snooty Benny asks her. And that hellish scene in gym class made my stomach churn as I recalled my own teen angst ridden days in gym class. One of Andie's best friends, Jenna (Alexa Kenin, who, sadly, died shortly after the film was released) brings humor to the awful situation by flicking Benny off & saying she hopes her breasts shrivel up and fall off. It's one of the many hilarious & memorable scenes of the film.

Ringwald is backed up by a strong supporting cast, including Jon Cryer, who plays her best guy friend, Duckie, who is just side-splittingly funny. In one of the funniest scenes of the film, he gets thrown in the girls bathroom by a group of nauseatingly preppy guys for trying to defend himself. "Wait a minute. We don't got none of this stuff in the boys room. You got doors on the stalls & a candy machine (He points to the tampon dispenser).
Harry Dean Stanton has never been more adorable & endearing as Andie's father. Annie Potts is wonderful as Andie's eccentric mother figure & co-worker. James Spader is Steff, the totally creepy slimeball & best friend of Blaine (Andrew McCarthy). I dismiss the fact that he looked way too old to be in high school because he just plays the part so damn well. He hates Andie & makes fun of her in front of his crowd. Secretly though, he has had a crush on her for years & it kills him that she won't give him the time of day. Ugh, I remember creeps like that in high school.

What I like is that all of the characters we're cheering for change for the better. Iona stops dating losers & gets herself a classy new image. Andie's father starts to get out of his rut that he's been in since Andie's mother left them years before & looks for a job for real this time. Duckie learns to stop making unfair generalizations about the popular people once he finds out Blaine is actually a very nice guy. Blaine learns to do what he wants to do & tells Steff off & makes things right with Andie. Andie refuses to let the popular kids break her. The only thing I didn't like was the unresolved ending that doesn't really leave things on a completely positive, realistic note. Andie & Blaine still have his parents to deal with & if they're as awful as Steff desribed, Blaine just might encounter the two unpleasant words that can pop up in difficult families: disown & estrangement.

Wish the DVD had some special features, but the soundtrack is great & essential to building the perfect CD collection.

Another Brat Pack Classic
Pretty in Pink deals with teen and social problems at their worst. It shows that no matter how far you've come there is always somebody somewhere who will not like or accept you.

Pretty in Pink is watchable and fairly entertaining. It doesn't have the cool scenery and hot dialogue as St. Elmo's Fire. It's not nearly as funny or fast paced as Sixteen Candles and it comes nowhere close to being as incredibly fabulous as The Breakfast Club ( which is the best Brat Pack film hands down!).

Put Pretty in Pink deals with a teen's look at how being poor can damage your love life and your reputation.

Molly Ringwald is Andie. The red-head 80's teen queen Ringwald plays Andie similar to the role of Sam in Sixteen Candles. Andie lives with her father who hasn't been able to deal with the fact that his wife/Andie's mother left them with no explanation. Andie is a teen with a lot on her shoulders. She goes to school, works, studies and takes care of her father. Without her friend Duckie she wouldn't have made it through the harder moments in life. He keeps her laughing when everyone else is laughing at her. Duckie ( Jon Cryer ) is head over heels in love with Andie. The audience can't sense that Andie knows this. When Duckie starts the lovey duvey talk Andie always brushes it off as another one of jokes. It's not until Blane ( Andrew McCarthy ) steps in the picture that Duckie gets the nerve to tell her how he really feels. Duckie reluctantly steps aside to let Blane and Andie embark on a stressed relationship. While Andie believes the relationship is hardest for her to deal with because Blane is rich and part of the in-crowd, she has no idea how hard it is for him to be with her. It turns out that Blane's snotty friends are giving him a hard time. James Spader is Steff ( probably in one of his most memorable roles ). Steff is the richest and the cruelist kid in the entire school. He's Blane's nasty best friend who tries to persuade Blane to stay away from Andie. On the other hand Steff has a secret motive. He doesn't resent Blane and Andie's relationship because of their social differences, but because he has been in love with Andie and can't take no for an answer. After constantly bullying her to date him and getting nowhere, Steff pulls out all the stops to make Blane give up on his true love.

This film is described as a " Cinderella " type but I thought it was more on the lines of " Sleeping Beauty ". It is indeed a modern fairytale. This film was made seventeen years ago ( when I was eight ) and I never paid it much attention although I'm a brat pack fan to the end. This is not the best brat pack movie in the world but is and will always be a classic to us 80's kids. Once again Molly Ringwald was on top of the world.

One for Jennifer O'Dell Fans
... When I saw that Jennifer O'Dell was not among the stars named on the cover, despite being pictured, I half expected this to be a token few seconds part like the one she did in Sometimes They Come Back For More.

Fortunately she is one of the main characters, with more screen time than Angie Everhart who does get a main billing. Although she, usually, wears more than her character in The Lost World she's still very sexy and provides possibly the only good reason to see the film.

In some ways, the plot could seem complicated but it plays as though it's very thin.

A biker steals drugs and money from his gang, killing several in the process. His girlfriend (O'Dell) runs off with a rich talent scout to escape his jealousy and abuse, accidentally taking the bag containing the stolen goods. To get back the drugs and kill her new boyfriend the biker kidnaps her epileptic sister (Everhart) and offers a trade. After a few chases and much violence the good guy wins and walks off in to the sunset with the girl.

An interesting piece of casting was Zach Galligan as the biker's sidekick. I can only recall him playing the good guy in Gremlins so it seemed strange to see him as a vicious thug.

I rated this 4 stars because it gives me what I wanted, a lot of Jennifer O'Dell, and will get partially rewatched a number of times. I couldn't really recommend it for anyone looking for quality in script or filming.

My 5 Wives
Released in DVD by Artisan Entertainment (22 May, 2001)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Sidney J. Furie
Starring: Rodney Dangerfield
Average review score:

underwhelming and forgettable
I have been a fan of Rodney's for twenty years. However, I can't defend him here. The movie is a dud. High school production methods, looks like it was shot with a cam-corder in one day.
No wonder it never made it to the theaters, they couldn't get distribution, no one would handle it.
If you're a die-hard RD fan, then here are the films you want to see, in descending order of quality:

1. Back To School
2. Caddyshack
3. Easy Money

That's it. He's still great live, though. Saw him at Radio City Music Hall in May, 2001 and he lit the place up.

Falls flat
Rodney Dangerfield's MY FIVE WIVES falls flat about halfway into the film. Until that point, Rodney keeps it moving with his ever-sharp one-liners. Despite looking and sounding his 78 years of age when he made MY FIVE WIVES, time had not robbed the great funnyman of his gift.

MY FIVE WIVES loses steam as it stumbles to a conclusion. Instead of keeping Dangerfield and his jokes the center of attention, the film concentrates on its "plot," which concerns a land swindle and organized crime. Despite a supporting cast including comedians John Byner and Andrew Dice Clay, there's not enough funny stuff going on when Rodney's not on screen.

In one MY FIVE WIVES scene, Dangerfield and the five young women he's married wear thong bathing suits. I'll give Rodney credit for doing a semi-nude scene at his age. Come to think of it, two of his wives don't look so hot from behind in those swimsuits, either, and they can't blame age.

No Oscar material here but one heck of a funny movie
No Oscar material here but one heck of a funny movie.
Rodney Dangerfield has never been funnier! The plot is silly but very entertaining and captures to hold audience. Hey, when we want to see a comedy we want to see a comedy and this movie does it pretty well.

One Night at McCool's
Released in DVD by Usa Films (05 February, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Harald Zwart
Starring: Matt Dillon and Liv Tyler
A giddy attempt to combine a standard film noir plot and a contemporary sex farce about men who (to quote John Hiatt's song) let their little heads do the thinking, One Night at McCool's is a promising comedy that never hits full speed, coasting along amiably enough before spiraling into violence that clashes with its trashy sensibility. It's not as polished as Grosse Pointe Blank, but it's fun enough to recommend, especially for those who drool at the sight of Liv Tyler. The movie begins by suggesting that Liv is sexy, then proceeds to prove it, and then continually insists upon it until you're left with no choice but to wholeheartedly agree. It's an easy choice, but pity the movie's wretched guys for making it.

As bombshell Jewell Valentine, Tyler lures three guys into her criminal scheme of happy homemaking. Bartender Matt Dillon's the first to take the bait; as Dillon's lawyer cousin, Paul Reiser can't resist; and when murder complicates everything, detective John Goodman employs his own love-struck brand of chivalry. Sporting a tacky pompadour, Michael Douglas steals the show as a hit man hired to whack the scheming sexpot--and Andrew Dice Clay is surprisingly funny in a dangerous dual role--but of course Liv can hold her own. It's all quite amusing, but rarely is McCool's as funny as you hope it will be; the dialogue by Stan Seidel (who sadly died before filming completed) is zesty enough but lacks the Coenesque punch that would kick it over the top. It hardly matters, though; with a femme fatale like Liv in control, the movie's faults will be easily forgiven. --Jeff Shannon

Situation comedy with laughs and there are plenty where it came from. Michael Douglas is hilarious at his role here! I've never seen Michael Douglas in such an uproareously, yet sutle, comedic role in his long serious acting career! And John Goodman..O Dear John! You gotta see him in this role... Liz Tyler gives her best comedic performance and it works just fine in this role.

FOXY LADY IS ON THE JOB !
It was one of the cutest flicks I've seen lately. They should shoot a sequel to this.
Our big-time seductive lady(Liv Tyler) has all the ability to turn on any man she wants. But at the same time she's a coldblooded killer beauty queen-floozy indeed-a real murderer and can be ruthless on many occasions. And the rest is damn jolly good-and odd !
Her charm makes The Detective (John Goodmann) don bikers cop uniform in which he looks enormously funny. And no need the mention that Liv's waayyy tooo hot in this movie-beware! she can also seduce the male viewers!

Delightful
Ralph Fiennes was tormented by his love for her in Onegin.Italian men were completely captivated by her in Stealing Beauty, even Kate Hudson walked out on her husband to be on her wedding day for her in Dr T and The Women, Liv Tyler is one of the most beautiful women ever.
In One Night At McCools, she plays the most charming femme fatale to grace the silver screen for a long while, in a delightful first English language feature by Norwegian director Harald Zwart.
No man can resist her heavenly beauty and her devilish charms..Not the gullible Matt Dillon, the chivalrous and religious John Goodman, the kinky and pretentious Paul Reiser, nor the cold and professional killer Michael Douglas..They are all consumed by this beauty and pay dearly for it, in what in my opinion is one the freshest and funniest film I have seen in a while.
The script is witty and the acting top class: John Goodman for once not going over the top,Matt Dillon showing great comic potential again after There is Something About Mary, and Richard Jenkins playing the priest and Goodmans's confessor is a great surprise and his scenes though short are great
There are very funny moments in this film, especially the very last scene, which although I will not spoil it, comes unexpected and is hilarious.
I highly recommend this film !!
