Gone in 60 Seconds/Con Air

Gone in 60 Seconds and Con Air DVDs
Action films are difficult buisness. Audiences today expect ever impressive action, smooth one-liners and enough explosions to make John McClane jump off a 20-storey building. While these two films don't reach the excellent heights of THE ROCK and FACE OFF, they're still fun entertainment. The pairing of two of Nicholas Cage's most high-octane action-addrenalin films sits together well, with both GONE IN 60 SECONDS and CON AIR making a very satisfying action night. Produced by action maestro Jerry Bruckheimer, CON AIR is one of my favourite Nic Cage films (Second only to FACE OFF). Effortlessly cool, it's a must-have DVD. This has tons of action, smart one-liners, great actors (John Malcovich as "The Virus" and Steve Buscemi as Garland Greene) and the Bruckheimer M.O: awesome action and big things exploding. Great fun. Directed by Dominic Sena, GONE IN 60 SECONDS isn't as impressive, and although Cage is cool, Angelina Jolie doesn't do much. Director Sena (SWORDFISH) spends too much time on un-interesting sup-plots and not enough on fun action set-pieces. The last 20 minutes are very exciting though, with a montage of high-speed chases in trademark Bruckheimer style. Not as good as THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS, but if you want a fast car chase flick with incredible action, then this is a must.

The Best
Oh my Gosh
Nick is the best Actor ever!!
He always plays the best parts and seems to always be the hero!! Also he and all the actors in gone in 60 Sec. fit the part perfectly!! You go Guys!!

Two great movies one low price
I must say this is a fantastic pack! Nicholas Cage is a fantastic actor and these are two of his best films. Con-air is a movie that has it all! It would definetly in my all time top ten films. As for Gone in Sixy seconds a great car flick and the fact that it has Joey Jeramiah from Degrassi Junior high in it makes is all the more sweeter! For the small price it's well worth checking out!

Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!
Released in DVD by Anchor Bay Entertainment (16 January, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NC-17
Director: Pedro Almodóvar
Starring: Victoria Abril, Antonio Banderas, Loles León, Julieta Serrano, and María Barranco
Perhaps only Pedro Almodóvar could come up with a story about a mental patient who stalks and kidnaps an ex-porn star--and turn it into a tender love story. But that's exactly what happens in Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, a lively installment from the Spanish director's wacky middle period (after the scruffy early films, and before his mature melodramas). Two of Almodóvar's sexiest stars, Antonio Banderas and Victoria Abril, play the leads: a cracked young man with dreams of bourgeois domesticity, and an actress who used to specialize in porno and heroin. Despite that fact that he binds her limbs with cord when he leaves the house, he always returns with a cheerful "I'm home!" For all Almodóvar's outrageousness, there's a touch of classical Hollywood in his construction. And while this movie is not for the politically correct, it does play by its own warped rules. --Robert Horton

She really played hard to get
Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down is my favorite of the unusual but compelling Pedro Almodovar library. It's probably a terrible movie for stalkers to watch because it works out better than their best dreams. Then again most kidnappers lack the verve of Antonio Banderas. The object of his captivity is quite a girl and the consummation scene was well overdue. If you are anxious to see a kidnapping movie with a romantic ending, this is your picture.

After seeing this film it dawned on me why Almodovar's films have their own feel. I don't think I have seen a gum wrapper or faded paint in any of his films. Everyone seems to live in renovated apartments and work in offices with modern furniture. Both his cinematography and art direction are so crisp and clear that you can smell the wet paint and imagine the crew behind the camera wiping their hands in mineral spirits. I wince at the thought of his characters eating something, because it will get crumbs on the floor. Luckily the characters seem to think of this before me.

See it for Antonio Banderas
I bought this movie (went looking for it actually) because Antonio Banderas is in it. Most if not all of the reviews claimed it was the best one he was ever in. Well I don't know about that, but it was pretty interesting. First of all, unless you are fluent and can read spanish, know that this movie is sub-titled.

I thought the story line was pretty weak but you know, as an Antonio fan, he really held the viewer's interest. Other reviewers said they thought the movie was kinky or slight S&M. I didn't think so. He tied her to the bed so that she wouldn't escape, not for erotic reasons. She, in the end, wanted to be tied because she was torn between wanting to leave him and loving him. I will not ruin the ending but know that this movie is not (to me anyway) of the erotic sort so don't buy it with that in mind.

DO buy it for Antonio Banderas. He's not as polished in his charm and expressions as he is, say, in Never Talk to Strangers or Original Sin but he is still handsome and captivating as ever.

Unless you like spanish movies or follow one of the actors careers, I don't see any real reason to see this movie. Nothing great, except again, for this one actor. You know this guy named Antonio.

THE BEST
One of the best Almodovar's and Bandera's films.

Voodoo/Werewolf
Released in DVD by Simitar Video (14 December, 1998)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Tony Zarindast
Starring: Jorge Rivero and Richard Lynch
Average review score:

Poor Corey Feldman
This Movie is typical of bad strait to video horror flicks. A college student, Andy, transfers to a new school, the "cool" kids don't like him, his girlfriend doesn't seem to either, and the result is that he falls in with the wrong crowd. And boy is it the wrong crowd. A bunch of bad actors playing a voodoo cult posing as a fraternity. Eventually Andy catches on that there is something unusual with this group of guys, but not before they make him do a seemingly endless string of bizarre antics.

The interesting, or perhaps the intriguing, event of this film is not any one scene in the movie, but the star, Corey Feldman. Feldman, at least to me, is kind of a cult icon. He had roles in some of the great coming of age/teen idol films of the 80's. As far as I can tell this was the last film he was in. Which I think is just too bad. I would love to see Corey get back in the movies, and back in roles where he can shine. I guess it probably won't happen, but hey, he is above this film.

WEREWOLF and VOODOO COMBO RULEZ!!! BUY IT NOW!!!!!!!!!
Werewolf has a great scene where a werewolf is chasing down a woman in in the middle of nowhere. Before she fell in a big pool of mud we see her white dress was already dirty and if that wasn`t enough she has about five different screams and none of them is coming out of her mouth! This was a such a cool scene! Another memorable scene is where Carrie comes in the house, puts her car keys in her jacket pocket and asks Paul if he is home and he responds being a werewolf and he throws her really hard over the railing and down the stairs and her keys still stays in her pocket and the camra shows the werewolf like he is the hero and she is the villian!Watch for the camra man`s shadow thru out the film and near the end look for grafitti on the desert rocks and watch Joe Estevez and Randall Oliver talk about their silver bullets when it was never explained how and when they got them!Watch for Jorge Rivero to have nearly a dozen differenr hair styles and Tony Zarindast as a werewolf driving a car!A excellent cast is in Werewolf including special appearances by Tony Zarindast,Tony Bova,Neena Belini,R.C.Bates as Sam "The Keeper"(he is such a cool dude)and the special makeup man Mark Williams!I just love lauging at this movie. It`s one heck of a werewolf flick! I love Werewolf!

Voodoo is ok but it is nothing compared to Werewolf! The best part in it is seeing Sara Douglas.Nuff said!

Wow,a real nail-biter..................
This is by far and away,Corey's greatest cinematic achievement to date.We must dismiss all of Corey's past works, because he was a mere child with overbearing parents with addictions.Corey was extremely convincing as a 27 year old college freshman trying to fit in with a covertly demonic fraternity......O.K.....I admit it,it was lame. But,I was an extra in the movie,so watch it and hope you all enjoy my performance.

Hackers
Released in DVD by Mgm/Ua Studios (24 April, 2001)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Iain Softley
Starring: Jonny Lee Miller and Angelina Jolie
As a depiction of the computer-hacker underground, this movie is bogus to the bone. As a thriller, it's cartoonish and conventional. The premise (computer-happy kids hack into the wrong system, and the Forces of Repression come after them) is recycled from John Badham's 1983 WarGames. And the corporate-creep bad guy, played by Fisher Stevens, steeples his fingers and growls mossy villainous clichés. ("By the time they realize the truth, we'll be long gone with all the money.") For all its postmodern trappings the movie is working with sub-prehistoric storytelling tools. But it does succeed on one level, as a movie about adolescent bonding and alienation. The director, Iain Softley, helmed the Beatles-in-Hamburg biopic Backbeat, and he seems to have an instinct for the emotions that pull kids together around common interests and the insecurities that drive them apart. The familiar crises of loyalty and betrayal have an ache of real loneliness. It doesn't hurt that the two stars, Jonny Lee Miller (Sick Boy Williamson in Trainspotting) and Angelina Jolie (Gia), are just about equally gorgeous and charismatic; their longing glances steam up the screen. --David Chute

What's up with this movie?
This is a movie that tries to be cool but fails miserably. In case you can't tell from the title, it is about hackers. Teenage hackers, to be precise. It is extremely rediculous, but at the same time it is dull and formulaic. I caught this movie on television one night, thinking "Hey, it's got Angelina Jolie in it, so it can't be that bad," but I was wrong. The hackers in this movie are all wierdos who sound like they are speaking a foreign language when they talk about computers. Hackers, apparently, are a huge underground society and have their own restaurants and TV shows. Also, all male hackers seem to act and dress like homosexuals. That's odd. Anyway, beneath all the wierdness this is, in some ways, an average teen movie. Also, with its hacker heroes fighting the oppressive FBI and the greedy corporations, you don't have to look very hard to see that it is leftist, anti-government propaganda more than anything else. All of this might have been forgivable if it was more entertaining, but it wasn't, so I give it one star, plus one extra star because it has Angelina Jolie in it.

Hackers Some How Hacks Into ur Heart
This movie stars a young angelina jolie and mattew lilliard. The movie is about an kid who when younger gets caught hacking computers and is sentenced to not touch a computer till he is 18 the story picks up with him being but ofcourse 18 and getting right back into computer mischief but what could easily be a horrible flick is actually good its a fun movie and some how i find my self watching scarface the lord of the rings the professional and hackers over and over.its a good flick and penn or teller the big one is in it enuff said

outstanding kid flick
Films based on technology should become dated...fast. But this one doesn't. Teenie bopper hackers vs corporate techno-crooks while using all the lastest hacker techniques and technology circa too long ago. But since a lot of the filming makes fine use of visual metaphor to supplement actual techno-things, the film comes off as slightly timeless.

Miller's ex overacts, as usual, but the cast is very well chosen and succeeds as techno-weenies. Fisher Stevens is at his best as corporate techno-crook Mr. The Plague with Lorraine Bracco as his idiot sidekick. You'll probably want to invest in the techno-rock CDs that make up the soundtrack too, I don't know which was better, the film or the soundtrack.

Ghost
Released in DVD by Paramount Home Video (24 April, 2001)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Jerry Zucker
Starring: Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg
Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze are the passionate lovers whose romance is undone when the latter is murdered during a bungled hit arranged by a rival. The clever concept by screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin (director of My Life) extends outward into comedy (Swayze's character communicates through a sassy medium played by Whoopi Goldberg, who won an Oscar for this role), horror (the afterlife is populated by hell-bound demons and the like), and romantic complications (a handsome suitor, played by Tony Goldwyn, comes on to Moore while Swayze's spirit is still hanging around). Directed by Jerry Zucker, previously best known for codirecting Airplane! and similar broad comedies, Ghost is a careful balancing act of strong commercial elements, but at heart it is a timeless Hollywood tearjerker that easily gets under one's skin. --Tom Keogh
Average review score:

"The love inside, you take it with you."
There are good syrupy films and there are bad syrupy films. Jerry Zucker's "Ghost" is a good syrupy film. In the magical world of celluloid, the premise that true love transcends death can be given tangible form. And all you need to turn this premise into box office gold are two engaging leads, good direction and production values, a classic Righteous Brothers' tune, and Whoopi.

Investment banker Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) is killed by a mugger one night. His true love, Molly Jensen (Demi Moore) is devastated but unbeknownst to her; Sam is still lingering on this astral plane. He has information that will implicate his killer but he has no way to pass on this information until he hooks up with a psychic named Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg). Oda has the ability to channel Sam so she works with him to catch his killer and to give him the opportunity to say a proper good-bye to Molly.

"Ghost" certainly goes against the traditional perception of ghosts as apparitions who hang around dilapidated houses and take pleasure in spooking people. Sam's ghost is a tortured soul who continues to hang around the living in order to set matters right. His reunion with Molly is as schmaltzy as you can get but it is also very effective because of the strong conviction Swayze and Moore bring to their roles. They really immerse themselves in the sentimental spirit of the film and bring a charm and sweetness to their relationship. Goldberg is also wonderful in a part that could easily have been painful to watch. She brings just the right combination of restraint and eccentricity to her performance to make it a keeper. "Ghost" is one doozy of an unconventional love story but the bottom line is that it works and works well.

The Sleeper Hit Of 1990
Paramount Pictures must have considered GHOST to be a throwaway movie when it released it at the height of the summer move-going season. With such violent, testosterone-laden action films as DIE HARD 2 and TOTAL RECALL out, what chance did a film that combined comedy, romance, drama, and the supernatural have? As it turned out, GHOST was THE sleeper hit of 1990--in fact, it grossed even more than its far more violent competition that year.

Patrick Swayze is a Manhattan stockbroker who seems to have it all, including a girlfriend (Demi Moore) to whom he cannot say "I love you" but instead "ditto." But he is constantly afraid of losing what he has. Then, while walking home with Moore from a night on the town, a Puerto Rican mugger shoots and him. Moore manages to survive, but Swayze doesn't...exactly. He is now a ghost.

Having to learn about his new state of mind and body, Swayze comes into contact with a would-be African-American medium (Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg) whom he coerces into helping him find out why he was killed. Unfortunately, he finds out that the answer is a painful one; his own supposed friend Carl (Tony Goldwyn) betrayed him because of his involvement with drug and money laundering, and that the killing was the result of needing the bank codes that had been in Swayze's wallet.

Although this twist is a little bit predictable, GHOST still works quite well. The edgy comic chemistry between Swayze and Goldberg is developed quite well, but so too is the romance between Swayze and Moore. This last element is rather surprising, since the director is Jerry Zucker, one of the directors of such slapstick fare as AIRPLANE! The special effects of the film are rather quite good, though slightly more emphasized here than in Spielberg's similar 1989 film ALWAYS; and the supernatural elements of GHOST strongly recall films like THE SHINING and POLTERGEIST. Goldberg's performance as the caustic medium Oda Mae Brown was richly deserving of the Supporting Actress Oscar she received; and Bruce Joel Rubin won an Oscar for his own original screenplay, again a well-earned award.

Maurice Jarre's score is appropriately tense in the right places and romantic in others, famously incorporating the Righteous Brothers' classic 1965 recording of "Unchained Melody." All of this makes GHOST a really, really good film--maybe not great in the classic sense, but definitely way above average.

Classic movie
I am a big fan of this movie and Whoopi. I watch it everytime it comes on TV. I've seen just about every movie she's done. One of my favorites is this one, Ghost. Very good film. Whoopi was excellent in this movie. Funny too. If you have never seen this movie, you are really missing out. I do recommend this movie.

Girl, Interrupted
Released in DVD by Columbia Tri-Star (04 February, 2003)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: James Mangold
Starring: Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie
Based on Susanna Kaysen's acclaimed journal-memoir, Girl, Interrupted bears inevitable resemblance to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and pale comparison to that earlier classic is impossible to avoid. The mental institution settings of both films guarantee a certain degree of déjà vu and at least one Oscar winner (in this case, Angelina Jolie), since playing a loony is any actor's dream gig. Unfortunately, director James Mangold seems to have misplaced the depth and delicacy of his underrated debut, Heavy, despite a great deal of earnest effort by everyone involved. It's easy to see why Winona Ryder chose to star in (and executive-produce) this nearly worthy adaptation of Kaysen's book, since it's a strong vehicle for female casting and potent drama. Mangold certainly got the former; whether he succeeded with the latter is not so clear.

To be sure, Ryder conveys the confusion and chaos that signified Kaysen's life during nearly 18 months of voluntary institutionalization beginning in 1967. But the film seems too eager to embrace the cliché that the "crazies" of the Claymoore women's ward are saner than the war-torn world outside, and lack of narrative focus gives way to semipredictable character study. Susanna (Ryder) is labeled with "borderline personality disorder," a diagnosis as ambiguous as her own emotions, and while Jolie chews the scenery as the resident bad-girl sociopath, Ryder effectively conveys an odyssey from vulnerable fear to self-awareness and, finally, to healing. The ensemble cast is uniformly superb, making this drama well worthwhile, even as it treads familiar territory. If it ultimately lacks dramatic impact, Girl, Interrupted makes it painfully clear that the boundaries of dysfunction are hazy in a world where everyone's crazy once in a while. --Jeff Shannon

Average review score:

Very good movie, but disturbing
Disturbing look at mental illness, what passes as mental illness, a lack of hope for long term recovery and how human these people really are. Sad, touching, honest, comic moments, and thought-provoking.

Dark and Deep "Interrupted" Had This Girl Raving...
"Girl, Interrupted", one of the best dramatic films in 2000, brings a darker side of life to the screen, not only referring to the time period, but also to the subject matter. Set in the turbulent late 1960s, a time of drugs, politics, and war, it follows the life of Susanna Kaysen, more specifically her two year stay at the famed McLean Psychiatric Hospital. Diagnosed with a "borderline personality disorder", she chooses not to conform to the wishes of the head nurse (Whoopi Goldberg) and psychiatrist (Vanessa Redgrave), but to instead befriend the resident women around her. Among them, a girl who will only eat her father's chicken, a woman who loves "Alice In Wonderland", and a charmingly charismatic sociopath Lisa (Angelina Jolie), the self proclaimed ringleader of the group. But confronted with the reality of it all and the looming need to be "fixed" Susanna soon realizes that to truly escape and taste her freedom, she will need to confront her biggest fear: herself. Winona Ryder, with an air of innocense and a tremendously realistic range of emotions and talents, has one of the best performances in her career as Susanna, and Angelina Jolie delivers a jaw-dropping (and well-earned Oscar- winning) performance as the troubled Lisa. Although this film is not for the weak at heart (it has disturbing self-mutilation/suicide scenes), it is wonderful in the sense it paints a realistic picture free of inhabitions and boundaries to create a truly remarkable film achievement.

It's time to give credit where credit is due.
Yes, Jolie won well deserved awards for her remarkable performance. However, this film belongs to the brilliant Winona Ryder. Who did more than provide an outstanding performance. She fought for years to get this film off the ground, ..getting the right script, the right director and co-producing the movie. So without everything Ms. Ryder did to bring "Girl, Interrupted" to the screen, there might have never been an award to win. Lets give one of the worlds most underrated actress' the credit that is way past due. It's sad that Ryder is well known for her legal issues more so than her filmography that reaches nearly 30 films. "Girl, Interrupted" is an excellent film.

Life or Something Like It
Released in DVD by Fox Home Entertainme (20 May, 2003)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Stephen Herek
Starring: Angelina Jolie and Edward Burns
Angelina Jolie proves her box-office versatility in Life or Something Like It, a romantic comedy (Jolie's first) that succeeds on the strength of Jolie's appealing performance. As Seattle TV news reporter Lanie Kerrigan, Jolie craves celebrity (i.e., she's insecure and seeks approval), but her disapproving cameraman (Edward Burns) detects an admirable woman beneath Lanie's bleached-blond coif and pancake makeup. When a homeless street prophet (Tony Shalhoub) predicts that Lanie will soon be dead, she gradually juggles her priorities, connecting with Burns, appearing drunk on camera (a mistake that ultimately works in her favor), and finding new confidence in her professional and romantic potential. It's generic fluff, but director Stephen Herek (Rock Star, Mr. Holland's Opus) approaches the material with his reliably good-natured sincerity, and Jolie's bubbly charm mixes well with Burns's casual sensibility. And while Herek can't compare to George Cukor or Billy Wilder, he knows just how to handle the inevitable loopholes in the prophet's not-so-gloomy premonition. --Jeff Shannon

SOMEWHAT FLAKY, BUT JOLIE'S CAMEO MAKES IT WATCHABLE...
Angelina Jolie first caught my eye in the bubble-gum action of "Tomb Raider". I passed her off as a pop actress.

Then I happened to see "Playing by heart" and was utterly surprised by her acting caliber. And now in this otherwise strangely conceptual film, she creates another magical web in a near-Oscar performance as newswoman Lanie Kerigan. During the course of the movie, Lanie goes through the entire spectrum of emotions from joy, to fear, to anger, to sadness, to optimism, to anxiety...and Angelina captures them immaculately proving once again for me her fabulous versatility.

Theme-wise the movie is simplistic, it could easily have gone down a "Wonderful Life" kind of a touchy-feely drain, but it doesn't. The narrative develops engrossingly, and intelligently. I can't figure out why the "general audience" can't get into these movies more, movies that make you feel and think.

There are even humorous moments, supported well by Edward Burns who plays a cameraman-cum-friend, plus the somewhat doozy but never boring Tony Shalhoub as "Prophet Jack."

What could perhaps have made the movie a bit more clever and inspiring would be to have ended it about 10 minutes before it actually does. Most of its sweet, witty moments are lost in a pathetic denouement that moralizes that it is only heterosexual love and marriage (which includes taking your husband's name -- even though you have built a career, stock portfolio and life with yours) that can ultimately save a woman from herself. I can think of at least ten other ways to have ended the movie without messing up the smartness of the rest of the plot.

Yet, definitely a watchable movie. If you're like me it may even provoke some introspection. Recommended for a weekend rental.

I loved it
This has got to be one of the best movies Angelina Jolie has ever done. I held off on seeing this movie for a long time because I heard a lot of bad things about it but I have nothing negative to say. I thought the film was funny, charming and delightful. Angelina Jolie is wonderful in this film and really any film she's in. She can play dangerous Lady Croft or the Sandra Bullock type role in 'Life or Something Like It.' Fantastic movie. A+

Charming Film With An Unexpected Role From Angeline Jolie
Angeline Jolie takes on the role of a news reporter who seems to have it all, until a homeless prophet played by Tony Shalhoub tells her that she will die within one week. She was very skeptical about his prediction -- until quite a few of his other predictions became true.

From the minute Jolie's character is delivered the gruesome news about her "death," to the scene where she discovers the seer's earthquake prediction come true, we witness a vulnerability and frailty that is rarely seen in Angeline Jolie. It comes as something of a revelation, especially when seeing many of her other films.

From that moment, and on, she begins to undergo an evaluation of her life, and as a result, we see a vital transformation in her character throughout the rest of the movie. She also develops a poignant love connection with Edward Burns' character, which possibly may have been foreseen, as the two exhibited considerable sexual tension, along with the hilarious bickering swapped between them in the earlier parts of the film.

So, did Angeline Jolie's character die? Was the seer's prediction accurate? You'll just have to watch the film, as I refuse to give any of that away.

All in all, a light, poignant romantic comedy with considerable dramatic attributes. Once again, Angeline Jolie gives a rare performance, as there are many traces of vulnerability that are seldom seen in her other performances. Guest appearance from actress Stockard Channing.

A short but sweet history lesson.
I watched this movie because I am becoming a fan of the strikingly handsome Vicent Perez. I not only tremendously enjoyed Vicent Perez in this movie but I actually enjoyed the story it told. Being an American with an hispanic background and a history buff, I often wondered what Spain's role was in the World Wars. This little story not only let me see a little of what my ancestors stance might have been during this period, but by the way the Spanish people where portrayed in this movie I also caught an insight on their way of life and made me proud of the scence of pride, strength, and intelligence they seemed to have possesed and passed on to future generations. The chemistry between Vicent Perez and Polly Walker had a little to be desired though. I am sure this could have been improved if the charactors had been able to explore each other a little more instead of trying to cram their story into 1 dance and one afternoon. All in all the story was meaningful, enjoyable and encompusses the whole families views and emotions during these trying times.

A Great Film for Romantics
The scenery and the story are beautiful as our the lovers Polly Walker and Vincent Perez. Candace Serviss

Excellent.
This wonderfully acted tale takes place in the mist of the Fascist's rise to power in Spain. The movie tells the story of an Irish nanny, how she contends with her peers and the family she works for. She falls in love with the married son of the family--but while a theme in the movie, it is not the major one. Instead, the movie focuses in on the family dynamic and how different members of the family contend with the social and political strife around them, told through the eyes (to use a cliche) of the nanny.

Sadly, because this movie doesn't rely on nude scenes, things blowing up every five minutes are cursing every other word, few have heard of this movie. My recommendation would be that you get a copy of this movie ASAP.

Love Is All Thereis

Hilarious!
When I first saw this movie, it was at midnight on a random cable channel because I couldn't sleep. Never have I been so grateful for my insomnia! This movie was funny and rang true from begining to end. As a native New Yorker I couldn't stop laughing at every typecast Renee Taylor hit right on the nose, and the witchcraft backdrop reminded me of my grandmother. And who doesn't love the story of Romeo and Juliet? The only thing that annoyed me is I missed the ending, but I'm going to buy myself a copy!

Now that's Italian!!
Being a NY Italian, I loved this movie! Even though it was a bit campy, it still depicted a warped view of Italian culture and it really wasn't far from the truth. I also loved it because I've been to both places used in this film...on City Island and in New Rochelle. I also loved the cast!! Even though Lainie and Renee aren't Italian, they certainly played their roles perfectly. I recommend this movie to anyone, although if you are Italian, you will enjoy it even more.

Sweet and absolutely hilarious!
How can anyone fault this movie? It's sweet, with a wonderful cast. I think Joseph Bologna and Renee Taylor wrote one of the funniest scripts, and they're performances are just fabulous! Paul Sorvino and Barbara Carrera went right over the top, with their pretentious "Count & Contessa" characters. I'm buying this movie, and I don't often do that, because it's theme of love and soul searching, combined with some of the funniest deliveries is too good not to watch whenever I need a pick-me-up. By the way, I'm not Italian, nor a New Yorker, but a Californian who appreciates talent and humor. Some of the cynical reviewers of this film could learn something from Lainie Kazan!

The Princess and the Barrio Boy
Released in DVD by Showtime Entertainme (09 April, 2002)
MPAA Rating: G (General Audience)
Director: Tony Plana
Sirena (Marisol Nichols) is a wealthy 15-year-old who lives in Los Angeles with her widowed father, Nestor (Edward James Olmos), and brother, Joseph. Sol (Nicholas Gonzalez) lives in East L.A. with his extended family. He's a scholarship student at her private school, and they’re both on the swim team. They're attracted to each other, but Sirena can't imagine dating Sol (despite his good looks)--and nor can her shopping-obsessed friends. Meanwhile, Nestor is planning to marry the gold-digging Minerva (Maria Conchita Alonzo). The kids can't stand her, but their father is too blinded by love to see the truth. Produced for Showtime by Jon Voight, The Princess and the Barrio Boy is about people who lose touch with their roots when they leave the old neighborhood behind. Sol serves to remind Sirena and Nestor that it will always be a part of them. For ages 10 and up. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Better than I expected...
My wife rented this, but unlike some of her other choices, I actually watched to the end. The broad outlines of the story are a typical girl meets boy-from-wrong-side-of-the-tracks love story, but there are a few surprises and a few laughs along the way. Other than a few absurdly over-the-top performances (Sirena's friends, and Pauly Shore) the cast is competent and enjoyable to watch. So if you're thinking of renting, it's worth seeing once. Cute story.

If you're thinking of buying the DVD, though, note that it's probably overpriced. There's no main title screen. The DVD starts with ads for other films that you can fast forward through but can't skip entirely, and there's no main title screen at all; the movie just starts right in after the ads are done. In addition, while the movie is full-frame, fitting for a made-for-TV movie, there's an annoying line of artifacts at the top of the screen through the whole thing.

To sum up: A decent rent, but a terrible buy.

This was such a feel-good and heartwarming film. It was so nice to finally view a movie with strong emphasis on family values. I highly recommend this movie for every member of the family.
