Smokey and the Bandit
Released in DVD by Universal Studios (04 March, 2003)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Hal Needham
Starring: Burt Reynolds and Sally Field
It's easy to assume this is just another dumb redneck comedy from Burt Reynolds's years of underachievement. But it's not bad as a dumb redneck comedy at all. Directed by career stuntman Hal Needham, Smokey and the Bandit is just a goofy chase starring a bunch of Reynolds's Hollywood cronies. New to the job as film boss, Needham brings a silly but energized sensibility to the production and an action man's need to see things moving. But he also has a distinctive feeling for relationships, and he's good with a joke. Put all that together, and Smokey is, at the very least (and unlike its sequels), a simple and original pleasure. --Tom Keogh

3.6 out of 5
SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT is a classic. Watching it now, it's just as easy to see why it ranked up with STAR WARS at the box-office as when it was first released in 1977. Burt Reynolds stars in one of his greatest (and definitely his most popular) roles as the Bandit, who teams up with his pal Cledus (Jerry Reed) to bring back a case of beer in 28 hours; if they can do it, there's $80,000 for them. Along the way Bandit also picks up a woman running from her wedding (Sally Field) and pesky sheriff (Jackie Gleason) who'll hunt Bandit to the death. If you've dismissed this as something like THE CANNONBALL RUN, no matter; you're forgiven, just watch it as soon as possible! SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT, along with it's cool soundtrack by co-star Jerry Reed, will remain a classic for years to come.

Fast Car chases
This movie was exciting. It was a high speed chase across several states. It all begin with a bet to see of they could get to Texakana, Tx and back in a certain time limit. The pontiac firebird was a great car to use when this movie was made.

I'm 10-10 and boogie'n on the side!
I wish every movie was this much fun! I mean, so much fun it makes me want to run beer through the smokies! I forgot how much fun this movie was. I was born the year it came out, so I obviously didn't see it on original release, but I did see it when I was a kid. Now I saw the tail end on the movie channel one night and just had to buy the disc. I tell you what..... I grew up on Dukes of Hazzard, and still love to see repeats. This is the movie that started it all. There is not one boring minute. Sure, it's no Oscar contender, but it wasn't meant to be. Just pure, good old American fun. Now, I have heard that the original was too vulgar to get the PG rating, so I understood some of the rather bad overdubs on the cussing, especially when you can read lips and it ain't even close. So it would be fabulous if the original, uncut, and unedited version can one day be released to DVD. Other than that, if you like to drive fast or like fast cars, cool chicks (yeah, Sally Field was a little hottie in her day), and just having fun, Smokey is a can't go wrong pick.

King of Bandit Jing (Vol. 1)
Released in DVD by A.D. Vision (22 July, 2003)
MPAA Rating:
Based on Yuchi Kumakura's popular manga character Odorobou Jing, the self-proclaimed King of the Bandits is a sort of pubescent Robin Hood. He wanders from place to place, picking up treasure and nonchalantly aiding people in distress. He breaks the bank when he breaks up an illegal gambling ring aboard a ghost ship, and rescues a lovely girl condemned to death for the crime of tardiness in Adonis, a city ruled by the "Demon of Time." When the inevitable fight begins, Jing relies on his lightning-fast moves and the sword blade concealed in the sleeve of his outsized coat. Kir, his parrot-like sidekick, transforms into the formidable monster Kir Royale when bad guys need blasting. The tone remains firmly tongue-in-cheek, with Kir trying to romance every girl in sight. (Rated 13 and older, but suitable for viewers 2-3 years younger: violence, brief nudity) --Charles Solomon

Wasted Potential
I picked up Jing out of desperation for something to watch while I was searching for a copy of FLCL. My only motivation was that the character design looked great, and frankly it and the animation are quite good, but that's the only redeeming thing about this DVD.

This movie is like the kid you knew in school who tried to be hilarious and always failed horribly. In almost everything the series does it fails, from badly timed jokes that often times make no sense, to action that goes literally nowhere. Jing solves all his problems by sticking his parrot on his arm and shooting stuff out the parrot's mouth. Rarely does he use his sword which might create some cool scenes, but no the bird is the solution for everything.

Poor action, poor comedy, a plot that never gives Jing any personality, (where he came from, why he's the king of bandits, etc.) all these combine to really make something that could have been good fall flat on it's face. I can understand how people could like the show, but the plot just doesn't add up for me. Even Cowboy Bebop which was random episodes like this had 6 episodes dedicated to a story, Jing doesn't seem to have any. All in all, it's produced well, but just not my cup of tea.

One of the greatest shows ever!
This is one of the best shows I have ever seen! Jing the Bandit King and his trusty bird sidekick Kir set off on journeys to find the best treasure. With awsome action, weird comedy, and even some girls this is a great anime and I suggest that you look in to geeting it!..............Ben Lankford

One of the most moving films
This is a great movie. A story of vengaince set against the savage backdrop of rural india, where little has changed since the dark ages. Like Islam, rural indians have little respect for women, who are often raped and forced into arranged marriages. This film was controversial and banned in India because it showed sex and rape. But the truth must be told. This woman was raped, not just once but many times over many years by powerful people and savage laymen.

Phoolan Devi fought back though. Unlike all those Burkahized women in Afghanistan who happily were raped and beaten by their husbands(islam is a religion of 'peace' remmember), Ms. Devi rounded up a whole village upper castes and murdered them all. This was not a savage act, this was revenge. It was in this village where she had been gang raped by the local leaders and forced into humiliation. These savage rural people got what they deserved and this movie shows this great awful tragic tale.

The film is the story of heroism, and of a womans struggle, one that is played out in many backwards third world countries. The film is very realistic and does not cut corners in portraying the rape scenes. Many will be turned away because they 'cant handle watching rape'. Well wake up and watch because to understand revenge you must watch!

Grasping
A biographical movie which shows the resilience of a low-caste women who takes up a gun to avenge the injustice done to her.
Based on Mala Sen's biography of Phoolan Devi, it shows the caste bifurcation that exist in some rural areas.
The realistic sets and excellant costume makes the movie real-like. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan has given his one-of-the-best score with a special mention of the song "Chhoti Si".
A MUST SEE.

THE EVIL THAT MEN DO!
POOLAN DEVI - PERSEVERANCE, When we stand before god, there is no caste system we are all equal. Poolan - a rape survivor, proved to herself after many traumatic events she was able to retain her honor and gain the respect of her people and people from around the world. Keep your eyes on the road you travel. That is the only one you have the power to change. That is the only one you will be walking today...

Smokey and the Bandit II
Released in DVD by Universal Studios (03 June, 2003)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Hal Needham
Starring: Burt Reynolds and Jackie Gleason

From Beer To Elephants
Any fan expecting the same excitement from the first S&TB movie may be disappointed with this installment. Part II is a much slower paced movie without the 'outlaw bootlegger' twist. The estranged love-affair between Bo & Carrie drags the movie down to a crawl that not even the turbo-charged TA can help speed up.

As you may remember, the first movie left off with Bandit betting on a clam chowder run from Boston to Atlanta. They should have continued on with that premise.

The movie reeks of 'Cannonball Run' antics with Dom Deluse sidekicking for Reynolds through the second half the movie. The backwoods feel is gone this time, along with the cleaverness.

Absent from the DVD are extras like deleted scenes (there must be some out there, they found enough extra footage from the first S&TB for TBS to broadcast), which is one of the main reasons people buy/rent DVDs.

However, if you like Gleason in the first one, there's plenty more of 'Beautiful Buford' in part II...and even more in part III where he becomes the main player (not literally, but S&TB 3 was almost released as 'Smokey IS the bandit' with Gleason playing the bandit and Buford...but that's a whole other review.)

Smokey and the Bandit II? A rental, but don't expect this DVD at Blockbuster anytime soon...

Why would anyone not like this movie if they liked the first
So this movie was different than the first Smokey and The Bandit. Was it really? If it's fast cars wanted, this has just the same as the first. If it's chase scene spectacular, this is just as much. If it's "bubble gum machines" getting wasted in a pile of heep by semis, this movie has just as much if not more so than the first as well. The same Burt Reynolds style, the same Jackie Gleason style, pretty much the same movie with a twist. Instead of hauling bootlegged beer, it's a pregnant elephant headed toward the Republican convention in Texas. Dom Deluise is hilarious in this second installment, making an added character for additional humor. Jerry Reed continues being the sensible one of the cast, always being the mediater in solving a problem as usual. If a person truly liked and is a real fan of Smokey and The Bandit original film, they would like this just the same. True, not the same as the first but equally as good even with the slight differences.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE! Daddy, look at that big ugly alligator...
"Daddy, look at that big ugly alligator.", "That reminds me, I gotta call your moma tonight." THIS MOVIE IS FUNNY!!!
The first thing I noticed about SMOKEY and the BANDIT 2 was the quality of the digital transfer to DVD. It is done so well, I felt like I was watching a movie made a year ago(aside the old cars and clothes).
I'm 36 and this movie brought back tons of memories. "Son, why isn't your gun loaded?", "It's too heavy when I put bullets in it, Daddy." This movie is full of hilarious one liners. I found myself to be in a great mood after watching this movie. There's a semi-sentimental tone that is, at times alittle cheesy but still, touching and not too overboard.
Everyone is fantastic in this movie. Even the gas station attendant is brilliantly funny. I really can't think of one negative thing to say about SB2.
It's as good, if not better than, the first BANDIT. I give it 2 thumbs up and a MUST SEE for anyone who loves to laugh.

*none*
Now this is one good anime. I love the animation and the music. I gave it 4 stars because the dub is kind of off and not timed correctly. Now down to the details.

The animation is good, as I said above. Music is too. But it's the fight scenes that are odd. Instead of using any "real" weapons, Kir always transforms and Jing calls out "Kir Royale!" and a blast comes out of Kir's throat. Another odd scene is where Kir Royale fails so Jing takes Vermouth's(?) "umbrella" and rams it down Kir's throad and uses Kir Royale and it blasts the umbrella out with the blast.

Overall, this os a wonderful anime. Probably suitable for ages 10 and up for language(one word in the first ep. but the subs say the "H" word alot).
