Robbie Williams - Live at the Albert
Released in DVD by Emi Distribution (23 April, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Robbie Williams
Recorded before the U.K. release of Swing While You're Winning, Robbie Williams's renditions of pop standards on Live at the Albert are at once delightful and disorienting. It's long been known that Williams is enamored of the Rat Pack, and here he lives out an illusion of being one of them. Clearly the jaunty singer is having a ball. The production is impeccable, the chorus girls are beautiful, his voice is in fine form--even his sweat-soaked, cuff-linked shirt hangs on him perfectly. But often Williams's trademark sarcasm and well-documented insecurities overshadow his love of the music. The strangest moment of the show occurs during an intermission, when MC Rupert Everett quizzes the audience on how much they love Robbie Williams. Although delivered with a wink, the stunt is most un-Rat Pack-like. The show as a whole seems like a surreal dream in which Robbie is at once working out his self-doubt and living his fantasy. And on a very conscious level, that is exactly what he is doing. --Beth Massa

Simply the BEST
I simply have to say that this is oen of THE best DVDs that I own. Whenever I am in a blue/down/depressed mood, this is what I will put on to bring a smile to my face. I find myself dancing around the living room every time! I knew of his song "i will talk hollywood will listen" and thought it was just ok, but after watching his performance on this dvd, it is my new favorite song. To go along with this dvd, I would DEFINITELY say that his "swing when you're winning" cd is THE BEST cd I own. I am a total Robbie fan. You will NOT be disappointed if you buy this dvd.

Wonderful !!!!
I was surprised and delighted when I saw his show.He sings with heart and swings in a very special way !!! I recommend that DVD , everything is perfect, the orchestra , the songs , his voice , his talent ... his interpretation for "My Way" brought tears in my eyes . But he is too charming singing "Beyond the Sea" and "Things ". It is always a pleasure to see that show again. Buy !!!!

The Greatest Entertainer of All Time, Bar None!
Sure he has musical talent, a soothing voice, great looks, sexy body and charisma but Robbie Williams is something more. He's the real thing folks and this DVD proves it. There were thousands in black tie and ball gowns in the Albert Hall that night and some paid thousands of pounds for their tickets, but I would bet that each person felt they were in a room alone with Robbie. That's his gift. This homage to Dean, Frank and Sammy is genuine, but also listen to "I Will Speak and Hollywood Will Listen," a song Williams wrote with Guy Chambers. It will break your heart.

I was a sophomore in college when the Beatles sang "I Want to Hold Your Hand" on Ed Sullivan's show. Cute, I thought, but then they recorded "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" a few years later and changed popular music forever. I am utterly convinced that Robbie Williams is next in line to change music in the same way the Beatles did.

Fellow Americans, listen to his voice, hear his lyrics, and you will understand, even if it is one person at-a-time.

7 Worlds Collide - Live At The St. James - Neil Finn & Friends
Released in DVD by Emi Distribution (26 February, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Paul Casserley

The next best thing to being there
I purchased a copy of this dvd from a local store, and every time i watch it i wish i could have seen it live. Over 2 hours of live music in 6 channel surround make for a concert in your own home. Highly recommended, definately consider this before the cd edition.

7 Worlds, 5 Stars.
Experiencing Neil Finn's recent, sold-out show at the Gothic Theater in Denver inspired me to purchase this DVD along with the companion CD. Drawn from five shows at The St. James in Aukland, New Zealand in April, 2001, this DVD captures all the energy and musical genius of Neil Finn live. With Lisa Germano, Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Johnny Marr (The Smiths), Sebastian Steinberg (Soul Coughing), and Phil Selway and Ed O'Brien (Radiohead) backing him, Neil's set list includes songs from his days fronting both Split Enz and Crowded House, as well as from his solo career. While Neil covers The Smith's "There is a Light that Never Goes Out" with a Morrissey-like vocal, it is ultimately Smith's guitarist, Johnny Marr, who steals the show with his song, "Down on the Corner" (which Neil covered in Denver). The DVD offers an amazing version of the Crowded House song, "Four Seasons in One Day," unfortunately missing from the companion CD.

G. Merritt

this is so great!
OK, first I see the annotated version of this DVD on Direct TV, I tape it and practically play it into the ground. Then I see neil in DC playing live. I get home and order this thing on Amazon right away. I love it even more, mostly because of Neil's delivery of "There is a light that never goes out" and J Marr's "Down on the Corner."

I think we sell neil short if we say we hear a bit of Lennon in his muse and in his voice. But the same spirit that comes through in lennon's "Julia" and "Across the Universe" is undeniable.

I love Neil's modesty and openness to his fans. Next time he's in my town, I'm going to be first in line to get on stage with him. Can't wait for more and more and more........

CKY2K
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (22 May, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Action Sports
If you like your humor down and dirty--or just plain juvenile and scatological--then you'll want to see CKY2K, which served in part as inspiration for MTV's Jackass. The title stands for "Camp Kill Yourself 2000," and ringleaders Bam Margera and Brandon DiCamillo prove there's nothing they won't do for a laugh, whether it means destroying a rental car, riding furniture tied behind moving vehicles, or performing Candid Camera-style practical jokes. For good measure, you get lots of footage of Bam and buddies doing skateboard tricks as well as their bizarre trip to Iceland (where, at one point, they heckle the house of rock star Bjork). Extra features include raunchy bits that just as easily could have been part of the main menu and a pair of thrash-metal music videos with the CKY2K sensibility. --Marshall Fine

The Best CKY DVD
This DVD is awsome! It has hilarious skits like the CKY Baseball, really good skating, and tons of crazy things that you wouldn't want to try at home...like getting hit by cars and jumping of really high things and landing on piles of dirt. It also has really good music from CKY and HIM. I recomend this to any fan of Jackass! So go by this along with CKY, CKY3, CKY4 Latest And Greatest, Steve-O, and Jackass The Movie. You won't be sorry.

Ultraviolet
Released in DVD by Ryko Distribution - Video (26 June, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Joe Ahearne
In a new twist on an old theme, the coolly stylish British miniseries Ultraviolet brings vampires into the 21st century, though the word vampire is never uttered in this mix of The X-Files and somber British TV mysteries like Touching Evil. Jack Davenport is a police detective who stumbles into an elite government agency when his partner and best friend suddenly becomes a nocturnal thug and bites him on the neck. Davenport reluctantly cuts off his old friends and lovers to join the team, which includes Idris Elba as a merciless ex-soldier and Susannah Harker as a medical researcher, and investigate a web of counterfeiting operations, banking scams, and experimental labs featuring human guinea pigs. "What they're researching is pollution: contamination of their blood supply," offers team leader and former priest Philip Quast, but the question remains: are they soulless monsters out to conquer mankind, or a persecuted minority who just want to live in peace with the humans?

Writer-director-creator Joe Ahearne brings all the traditional vampire tropes up to date; not only do they lack reflections in a mirror, but they don't show up on video and their voices don't carry over phone lines or record on audio tapes ("which makes surveillance a bitch"). Sunlight burns like an acid, and when they die they go up like a flare, leaving a pile of ash in their wake. But it's the sharp character writing, moral quandaries, and ingenious twists of this smart, stylish conspiracy thriller that make this series gripping down to the final episode.

The two-disc DVD set features an audio interview with Ahearne along with episode synopses and character notes. --Sean Axmaker

The Undead meet CSI...
This is originally, stylish, intelligent, suspenseful, and overall GREAT ENTERTAINMENT! I LOVE this series! I am devastated that there were only 6 episodes. There is some great spin and orginality to the vampire story here...sort of CSI meets the Undead...One of the team who is working to vanquish the vampires (the word "vampire" is never mentioned...only Code "V", roman numberal being "V"...you figure it out!) is a physicial who uses Ultraviolet light to ascertain vampire blood...and to heal some of the vampire bites. The microscope, lab, and morgue (where the Code "V's" are held after they are destroyed) all provide a new interest to an old story. I highly recommend this--it is intelligent and satisfying viewing. The only downside is--there were only 6 episodes.

Great stuff
Wonderful take on the "Code 5" story.

I've watched it twice already and while I haven't seen all the extras mentioned here, all I can say is GIMME MORE! Let's see a second series of this instead of one more reality-tv show.

Perfect
This series is what X-Files should have been. It is presented as a perfect mystery, but reasonable answers are available in the end. The acting is outstanding. I was astonished to see the stuffy Commodore Norrington from Pirates of the Caribbean as the sympathetic protagonist here. Jack Davenport is a fine actor. And all the other performances are lovely jobs. My only disappointment is that there are no more episodes!!!

Toto - 25th Anniversary (Live in Amsterdam)
Released in DVD by Red Distribution, In (23 September, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Toto may be past its prime as a multi-platinum recording band, but Live in Amsterdam offers abundant proof that their performances are as electrifying as ever. Recorded in Amsterdam's Heineken Music Hall on February 17, 2003, near the end of Toto's 25th anniversary world tour, this dynamic concert serves as a cheerful reminder that Toto have been alive and well and recording steadily since 1978. The band's 2002 release Through the Looking Glass was an album of covers, two of which are welcomed here: "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is a prime showcase for guitarist Steve Lukather, and "Bodhisattva" is a tight, meticulous tribute to Toto's original drummer, the late Jeff Porcaro, and his classic sessions with Steely Dan. The mega-hits "Africa," "Rosanna," and "Hold the Line" are perfectly executed, and in a band full of talented singers, lead vocalist Bobby Kimball sounds better than ever. Two impressive medleys show the band in full gear as a comfortable unit of seasoned professionals, highlighted by impeccable work from keyboardist David Paich, bassist Mike Poracaro, and ace drummer Simon Phillips (who also produced and mixed this recording for DVD). And while 35 minutes of Porcaro's backstage home-video might seem frivolous, it shows a band that's still having fun, as reflected in the beaming smiles of their appreciative Amsterdam audience. --Jeff Shannon

TOTO - LIVE IN AMSTERDAM DVD
I have seen at least one show of every Toto tour since 1986, and for me this captures one of their best. Whilst the hits were necessarily included to appeal to a wider fan base, there is ample album material and new arrangements for musicians and discerning music fans. Toto fanatics and cynics alike can get a flavour of the humour of this band on their own backstage video footage. Even if Toto don't achieve the recognition they deserve in their lifetime's, this DVD will be an excellent testimony to what Eddie Van Halen described as "collectively the best musicians on the planet". Fantastic post-production on both visual and especially the surround sound audio mixes.

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME MUSICIANSHIP!
I have quite a few live music DVDs and from start to finish, this is one of the best. The musicianship is outstanding on all accounts. Vocals are in the zone. Lukather's guitar work is fantastic, but his bandmates shine as well. The finale of "White Sister" really rocks. The arrangement of "Africa" is excellent. If you like Toto and have a DVD player, especially one with Dolby Digital surround sound, crank it up. This one is well worth it.

TOTO at their best !!!
I have been an avid fan of TOTO since TOTO 4 and I have seen many live concert DVDs over the years, but this one beats them all easily. It's hard to find anything flawed about this DVD. The band's performance, especially Steve on the guitar, Simon on the drums and Bobby's singing, to the sound and picture quality, is simply superb and hard to beat. TOTO is seen in their absolute top form here.

Let's face it, some of the best musicians in the business happen to be playing together in this band and that speaks for itself. How many other bands are there of this calibre ? This is pure talent and outstanding musicianship through and through. It's all from the heart and soul !

There really should be more people appreciating TOTO and I call on all TOTO fans out there, you have this DVD already no doubt, to order another copy or several copies to give to your friends as a gift. Think about it, it's a perfect Christmas gift. I'm sure that those who get to watch this DVD will be hooked onto TOTO from now on. It's the least we could do to show our support to TOTO and the continued existence of true music.

Highly recommended also is the audio CD of this show in Amsterdam and then there's The Essential TOTO cd just released by Sony. The sound is great as the selected tracks from their debut album all the way up to Mindfields have been digitally remastered once again.

But just going back to this DVD for now, don't leave this page yet, order it now ! You'll be extremely happy you did.

The Beatles Anthology
Released in DVD by EMI Music Distribution (Pre-Release) (01 April, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Initially broadcast as a TV miniseries to go with the series of three Anthology double-CD albums, this set of eight documentary tapes has the heft and scope of one of Ken Burns's expansive projects. Still, unless you are either a historian or a truly committed fan, you'll find yourself with way more material--particularly about the Beatles' early lives as lads in Liverpool--than you'll want to watch. The documentary material is copious, including early performance films and tapes, at the point before they found their true voices. The actual Beatlemania years--beginning in 1963 and concluding in 1970--feature extensive performance films, as well as home movies and archival material. The best parts, of course, are the interviews with the Beatles themselves, who produced the entire thing. Along with reworking two previously unreleased John Lennon tracks as "new Beatles songs," the Anthology includes some unseen Lennon interview tapes so that his acerbic voice can be heard as well. This stands as a comprehensive document of that heady period, the second coming of rock & roll, as the Beatles took what Elvis had started and expanded upon it exponentially. The tapes give a solid sense of the historical context and the way these four musicians changed the world around them in the 1960s. --Marshall Fine

Pretty good
I liked this series, especially the various live footage, but I also have a few complaints.

"The Beatles Anthology" is a VERY nice, almost fawning, portrayal of the Beatles, and their bitter and sometimes even hate-filled breakup is made to look like a friendly mutual decision where everybody loooooves each other and just want to move on in their lives, yadayadayada.

The fact that comments from the three surviving Beatles (anno 1996-97) and their various associates are never commented upon or questioned or analyzed makes "The Beatles Anthology" a bit of a bland experience at times...some sort of unbiased commentary (other than various newscasters in old 60s TV clips) would have been nice.
As it is, "Anthology" just rolls along, a bit monotously, offering a pleasant, often entertaining look at the career of the Beatles, but never analyzing or seeing things in a larger context, and that's really a shame. But I suppose that was the price the BBC had to pay to get George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney to take part.

Awesome!
This is a must have for any Beatles fans out there. It's about the Beatles, by the Beatles. Can't get any more exact information than that... I've watched it so many times I don't think I can even count that high! It's really awesome. It has interviews, music videos, movie clips... You name it, it's in there.
The last few chapters were very sad; I was in tears!

Comprehensive
This can answer the question, "what was the hoopla all about?". For the price of the softcover "Anthology" book and the DVD AND the CD sets, that comes to how much the original VHS tapes cost.
The DVD set sounded and looked great, the extra disc is worth having, esp. since George passed away.

It is sad that John wasn't around to take part in it, but he's very much there throughout the documentary. I'm not sure if "Imagine" (the movie on his life)is on DVD yet, but would also be a great addition to this one. "Lennon Legend" will be out soon as of this writing, so will the "Ed Sullivan" DVD.

But I hope that they will wind up putting out a DVD collection of their songs. Between existing video footage, animation, clever editing, rare photos and home movies, and footage of the times, I think it's possible.

Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society - Boozed Broozed & Broken-Boned
Released in DVD by Red Distribution, In (12 August, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Average review score:

An absolute must-have!!!!!!
I'm a big fan of Zakk Wylde and his music. I have three of his cds and enjoy them very much, and plan on getting them all. I was really excited to learn he finally has a concert dvd out, and eagerly rushed out to the stores to buy it after reading all the Amazon reviews. My expectations were totally met and was i not one bit disappointed. This is a must-have for anyone into Zakk and his music. The concert is well-filmed and sounds amazing. The dvd is two-hours long and is packed with extras such as a guitar lesson that teaches you how to play three of Zakk's complex-sounding solos (i can't play guitar, but was fascinated by watching the lesson because he breaks the solo down in parts and does it slowly), a home movie of him playing one of his ballads while his little daugher sings along with him, interviews where he talks about the band and Ozzie and other stuff, Zakk playing the national anthem on his guitar at a hockey game, a music video directed by Rob Zombie from Zakk's new cd The Blessed Hellride (excellent cd!), some other concert footage, and some backstage goofing around and drunkenness that is funny to watch - you'll hear Zakk fart, and in one other scene he also sniffs his armpit and screws up his face. The man is very uninhibited and not shy on camera at all. He's hilarious! The whole dvd is well worth the money and highly recommended. It's full of good music, the guitar lesson should please the fans who play guitar, the interviews are interesting , and the silly stuff is funny. Zakk obviously put alot into this dvd and it shows. He's a true showman and he wanted to give his fans a ton of stuff to watch on the dvd. The concert is the highlight on the disc and you'll love watching it. It sounds great if you have surround sound. Hands down this is one of the best concert dvds out this year.

Black Label Society: Boozed, Broozed and Broken Boned
This is one of the finest music DVD's that I have ever seen. And ive seen many, from such artists like AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica,Queen and many many more. It may not be the biggest arena in the country like MSG but the fans and atmosphere help make the DVD even better to watch!!!!

We want more from the Society. Maybe in the New York Chapter!!!!!

Zakk is God
This is by far the best music DVD i have ever seen, or owned. Zakk Wylde, picked at the ripe age of 18 to play for the Prince of Darkness, none other than the Ozzman himself, in this DVD proves to the world that he no longer has to live in Ozzy's shadow, for he is the man. This is the heaviest, modern day heavy metal there is right now, and probably ever will be. From a guitarists point of view, there is no one better than him around today. From a fan's point of view or anyone who has even seen BLS live, you know that there is more energy from this band than any other band around today. From his patented guitar solo half way through the set, included his always enjoyable, slightly amped up National Anthem, to his blistering solos, some doubled by Nick "Evil Twin" Catanese, this is a must own for the HARDCORE metal fan. This is not to be taken lightly. If you have any complaints, remember, the COMPLAINT DEPT. IS CLOSED. Hope anyone who gets this DVD enjoys it as much i do. Hell, i watch it once a day, and it still amazes me.
As far as vocals, we'll we know that Zakk is a studio singer, but the reason you love this guy is not for his vocals, but his guitar wizardry. He makes playin look so easy, it's great.

Well, Long Live the Mother F(%^in Black Label Society. Only the true HARDCORE can even think of enjoying the most HARDCORE of them all. So Long from the ATLANTA CHAPTER. Oh, the BREWTALITY.

P.S. It does say something when u play a venue and u empty the establishment of it's last drop of BEER, LIQUOR, WINE, etc.

Dave Matthews Band - Listener Supported
Released in DVD by BMG Distribution (08 February, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Dave Matthews Band
The turn of the millennium may have been marked by a confluence of over-the-top white rap-rockers, teeny pop pinups, and other musical cartoons, but the Dave Matthews Band continues to buck such trends while drawing a fiercely loyal audience. This first-rate concert, produced for public television, works both as concert souvenir for the faithful and a useful introduction to the DMB's formidable musicianship. Whether or not you relish the songs and singing of the eponymous, transplanted South African at center stage, it's hard to knock the collective power of this supple troupe, which effectively swirls jazz, folk, and world music through Matthews's bluesy pop songs.

The 2-hour show features 18 songs, spanning both familiar Matthews originals ("Crash Into Me," "Too Much") and a few choice covers ("Long Black Veil," "All Along the Watchtower"). With reeds and electric violin to spice up the instrumental attack, and a strong backing chorus to sweeten Matthews's own craggy voice, the DMB doesn't need to rely on theatricality; their sense of drama lies more in extended jams that can expose the material's limitations but stoke ardent fans' cheers. The direction and editing are smooth and fluid, and excellent audio recording and mixing are consistent with the group's growing shelf of live albums. Clearly, for the Matthews Band and its fans, the playing's the thing, and they play generously and well throughout. --Sam Sutherland

Average review score:

Good concert, poor sound
I bought this DVD becouse of 5 stars. Of course i like DMB, so i buy it from Amazon. When i start to watch this DVD i was disappointed. DMB did a great job on the stage, but sound quality on this DVD is AWFUL. DD5.1 have no clarity and details. It lacks of power. The vocals also doesn't sounds clean. The man who mixed DD on this product, have to learn a lot. He spoiled this otherwise great concert. He must see Eric Claptons-One More Car One More Rider DVD. The picture quality is not bad, but the camera work have not enough dynamic for that kind of music. I rate this DVD 5 stars to DMB and 1 star to quality of this DVD.

dave live is the best
Dave live is simply the best. It's how they got famous in the first place, they are one of the hardest working live tour bands out there and this dvd is just great. It really shows what they are like live. Also if you are a fan of older songs rather than the newer stuff will you love the song selections on here as well...listener supported cd/dvd either way you go its great

This Rocks
I am ofcourse a big Dave fan, and I have been to their concerts as well. I can say that this dvd is as close to being at the concert. It has most of the popular songs on it and you can choose the angles at which you want to view. If I had to pick just one Dave Matthews dvd to buy I would pick this one. It is really worth it.

I Am Trying to Break Your Heart - A Film About Wilco
Released in DVD by Ryko Distribution (Video) (01 April, 2003)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director: Sam Jones (IV)
This splendid documentary captures the band Wilco's struggles (both with their record company and within the band itself) while recording their album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. I Am Trying to Break Your Heart is completely engrossing, whether or not you are familiar with the band. As they work on the album, there's some tension between singer-songwriter Jeff Tweedy and bandmate Jay Bennett, but overall the band members are happy and enjoying exploring their music. But when they turn in the finished songs, their record label drops them, leaving them adrift with the album that promises to be a huge artistic leap. For fans of Wilco, this gorgeously photographed movie will be a thrilling look at the life of the band and Tweedy's creative process; but even novices will be drawn into the contrasts between art and commerce brought out by the conflict. --Bret Fetzer
Average review score:

Star-Studded Spectacle
Personally, I think Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is the best album of the new millenium. When I heard of this documentary being released I immediatly pre-ordered it. It was well worth my cash. The documentary in itself is pretty entertaining from any music fans standpoint. You not only get a peak on the making of a great record, but you see how a band communicates with eachother, and how the record industry reacts to such an ''unlistenable'' album. If the antics of Jay wont win your heart, then Jeff Tweedys solo concert will. Oh, and if your one for extras, then the second disc is full of them. If you bought Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and enjoyed it, be sure and pick this up. Its an interesting companion to a superb record.

see this film
this is one of the best documentaries ever made. even if you don't like wilco you will be a fan of this film. see this one then own it.

Amazing Documentary
Probably one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Not only does it give you an in-depth look into Wilco on the road, but they also captured one of the best recording industry stories on film. If you are a fan of Wilco there is no question that you will enjoy this film. The live tracks are outstanding and the 40 or so minutes of bonus footage is worth the price alone.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Rust Never Sleeps - The Concert Film
Released in DVD by Bmg Distribution (VI (24 September, 2002)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Neil Young
Neil Young's 1978 concert tour, documented in this acclaimed two-hour film that was directed by Young himself (using the pseudonym Bernard Shakey), is a treat for the singer-songwriter's fans. The concept of the show is high (for Young, anyway), if rather odd: roadies (here called "Road Eyes") decked out like the Tusken Raiders from Star Wars, stage announcements from the original Woodstock during set changes, and giant amps, microphones, and so on for an "Incredible Shrinking Man" effect. Of course, it's the music that counts, and there's plenty of that, what with nearly 20 songs (including two versions of "Hey Hey, My My," his nod to the punk movement), acoustic and electric (with longtime companions Crazy Horse), dating back to his Buffalo Springfield days ("I Am a Child") and continuing through popular solo numbers like "Cinnamon Girl" and the extended "Like a Hurricane." DVD bonus material includes photos and song lyrics. --Sam Graham
