Very,Very,Funny
I loved this movie. I thought it was so funny. I actually laughed out loud more than once. I didn't know what to expect when I started watching it. But, I am glad that I purchased it. It was worth buying. I am a huge Jason Priestly fan, that was one of the reasons why I bought the movie. I was not disappointed. It was great. I love the golf scene at the end. That was hysterical. I recommend this movie. It is light and airy. Not to serious. There are some touching scenes between the Father and Jason Priestly, that are nice. I like the guy who plays the Father. He was good. I like the whole cast, they all worked well together. I thought Peter Dobson was great. That guy says the funniest things. His facial expressions were great. Buy this movie, you won't be disappointed. I don't know why the guy at the bottom only gave it 1 star. It was better than that. I don't know what movie he was watching.

Classic guy film!
It's a good movie for the male gender or gals who enjoy guy type movies..By that, I mean if you enjoy the movie Friday, Swingers or Mall Rats odds are you will like this movie. The viewer who rated this only one star below evidently has a problem with people who gamble. If this is you, dont buy this movie!...lol..Enjoy

A PLEASANT SLEEPER
If you're expecting an action packed film, this movie is not for you. 95% of the scenes take place in a restaurant. This film runs more like an exceptional broadway play, then a movie. The story revolves around the lives of four young people who are trying to figure out what life is all about and what's in it for them. The dialogue is superbly written and beautifully acted by the four male leads. I also liked the father. The scene between him and his son, played by Jason Priestly, would bring tears to a glass eye. There are two other scenes; the Monday night date sequence and the scene in the men's room, that are worth the price of this DVD. If you're looking for a contemporary movie with snappy dialogue and endless one liners, this film is for you. Just be prepared to upgrade your expectations from the usual shallow and no brainer movies that Hollywood likes to churn out for a quick profit.

Night of the Blood Beast
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (24 September, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: John Baer

Drive in fare
This is a perfect example of a "B' 50's monster movie, comparable to "Attack of the Giant Leeches" or " The Giant Claw" The technical details of this movie aren't worth mentioning, acting's pretty bad too, and the monster looks like a giant paper mache' parrot made by a class of kindergarteners. Despite all that negativity I liked this movie for the same reason I like the two I mentioned above, it's fun to watch. And Bronson's cave makes an appearance, you'll recognize it from several other flicks

Okay Film, But Stereotypical
NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST

Is the Ventura release listed here the same as [another] version reviewed by everyone at this site?...

NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST is an enjoyable but cheap and somewhat predictable fare. The actors do the best they can with the material. Some elements are reminescent of other films. The Quatermass Xperiment, for instance, also features an astronaut who comes back to earth, a man who should be dead, but who is kept alive and consumed by an alien parasite. This film has the "momma" or "papa" alien aboard the rocket as well. It will become the protagonist of the film.

The body scan of the astronaut, Major John Corcoran (Michael Emmet) with the incubating alien parasites in his chest cavity is rather cool. Dr. Wyman (Tyler McVey) has his head bitten off but we are spared the gore. (Did it originslly show more?) We find out later that the alien has appropriated the dead doctor's knowledge and language. Didn't Corman already do this bisiness in ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS?

This film is hardly a Roger Corman classic. Esentially he assisted his brother who directed this film and the BEAST WITH A MILLION EYES. The script is poor and steals profusely from others. The monstrous alien is fashioned from a recycled costume used in TEENAGE CAVEMAN.

The sets are essentially Griffith Park (plenty of fences) and Bronson Caves (seen in lots of movies!).

... What became of the 35 mm original? Is it lost? It is sad if this is the best copy anyone could find. Many films have been lost through careless circulation.

The notes on the box are quoted from LAST GASPS: HORRIBLE HORRORS FROM HORROR HEROES by Thorn Sherman. However, I wish you luck trying to find it...!

The notes close with another peculiar statement, that the "lucky film fan ... finally has a chance to see it in the format in which it was meant to be seen in its COMPLETE, TRUNCATED form." Huh? Are they still pulling our chain? For anyone with poor vocabulary, "truncated" means edited or shortened. How can such a thing be complete? The notes are a bit insulting.

Even the trailer is abruptly cut off at the end. The picture quality is poor and the audio is fair.

>NO NUDITY
>NO GRAPHIC VIOLENCE AND/OR GORE
>NO BAD LANGUAGE

Actually a 3 and a half ....
Great example of classic 50's American drive-in monster movies, of which I am a huge fan. Nobody expected realism, fine plot points or continuity then. People expected fun and still had the ability to suspend their disbelief. Standard wooden but serviceable acting. A couple of actually suspenseful and starling scenes, but pretty lightweight amusement overall. Glad this one came on the market as it had been considered basically lost for years. Get it while you can. It is not the finest example of this genre and era, but is better than a lot, and at just around an hour, it goes down like a candy bar. Hilarious non-ending.

The disc looks as good as one can expect, one of the better looking discs from Retromedia, and no annoying intro. There are a couple of scenes that seem to jump as if some footage is missing, but we can't blame the company for that. At 45 years old, this is as good as it's going to get, and for what it is, what more do you want? A double disc pristine Criterion treatment? Roll out the popcorn and soda and forget your troubles.

terrible transfer to DVD
I agree with the first reviewer. I was looking forward to watching this serial but the transfer to DVD is so poor that I gave up after the 2nd chapter.

great serial lousy copy
Yes, I too have fond memories of this serial, but this is a poor quality transfer, inferior even to vhs copies I have come across in the past. 'Nuff said.

Gene Autry sings to defeat evil!
I mistakenly purchased this DVD (PHANTOM EMPIRE: Part 2) thinking I'd get the entire serial, but all in all, this is a pretty fun viewing. Gene Autry falls into a subterranian city named Murania, and must fight to stay alive against the wicked queen that rules there. Very silly robots about in this story, with short-brimmed cowboy hats on top of their box-like features. A rebellion is being planned, as on the surface of the earth evil scientists plot to steal radium from the Radio Ranch. On top of all this, Radio Ranch is endangered by Gene Autry's inability to make it to perform on his radio show!
Complete with horse chases, sword fights, and deadly technology, this is a fun serial to watch. The print isn't great, but it is watchable and costs little for the entire collection. A very rare entry into the science fiction/western genre and a lot of fun!

Salute to Reagan - A President's Greatest Moments
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (11 June, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Ronald Reagan
Average review score:

good but could be better
I was sold on this DVD from the TV advertisement. I was glad I got it but a little disappointed in what it actually contained. It is basically snapshots of Reagan's finer moments - particular pieces of speeches or footage. Practically no background or context, and it can be debated whether it actually covers "the best of Reagan" or not. What it does have is great, but I was hoping that a Salute to Reagan would be a little more comprehensive.

Best Out There
I found this DVD a joy almost simply because it is one of a kind. For those like myself who missed many of Ronnie's greatest moments (and you care), this is a gem.

Best Reagan video!!
I think some of the other reviewers did not actually watch this DVD! It has ALL the great moments of Reagan's presidency (Inauguration, Evil Empire, Challenger, D-Day, along with lots of great jokes, including the age joke in the debate against Mondale, etc... etc..., including virtually all that another reviewer claimed was missing). The only speeches of import that are missing are from BEFORE his Presidency, which is implied by the subtitle: A President's Greatest Moments. It even has the entire tribute film that celebrated his great Presidency at the '96 convention. For anyone looking for an inspiring and uplifting compilation of all the highlights - and one that moved my staunch Democrat mom to tears - this is it!

Arthur's Quest
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (08 February, 2000)
MPAA Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Neil Mandt

Medieval Drivel
Can't anyone think of NEW ideas these days? Another take on a story that has been done and re-done, this was the worst bit of writing I was forced to painfully endure, and I felt it was completely inappropriate for young children. Instead of "straight to video", this movie should have gone straight to the shelf. Absolute torture to watch, and a terrible script!

Parents beware
I am a curator at a local science museum and picked this up to see if it may be good to go along with our Medievil summer camp childrens program. I was very concerned when there were scenes of adult content, one which has women jumping around in pretty much S&M type scantilly clad leather outfits. There were some questionable scenes, but this is all I needed to rule this out as being suitable for a group of children.

Wow! Where was this movie hiding?
What fun! Gather the kids and enjoy a fun take on the Arthurian legend. All the actors are great with special kudos to Kevin Elston. That guy just rocks!

The Phantom Creeps

Good Serial, Bad DVD
The Phantom Creeps, Bela Lugosi's final movie serial, holds a special place in my memories for being the first complete chapterplay I had seen. I had seen portions of others but never a complete one before this. Lugosi steals the serial as Doctor Alex Zorka, a brilliant scientist who has made a series of inventions from a meteorite he found in Africa--via footage from "The Invisible Ray" for the Africa sequence. He wants to sell his secrets to the highest bidder, but the US Government wants to stop him. What is unusual for this serial is that I feel that Zorka was initially the good guy of the story before the US and a spyring start looking for his secrets and thus hounding him into insanity. The DVD for this is painful. The print used retains the Commonwealth (TV?) logo instead of the normal Filmcraft or Universal logo. Sound is muddy at quite a few places. Picture will be dark in a few places--sometimes in a daytime scene. They use only one set of opening credits for the 12 chapters. Normally, Universal would use a opening which showed the main cast for its first 3 episodes while the remaining episodes would use an opening that merely lists who the actors were. It is this second opening that is on the DVD and is only used once for all 12 chapters. There are no extras on this disc, such as a trailer, although you can choose to play it all at once or select an individual chapter. There is an insert with information on Lugosi. There are better VHS copies out there and in my own collection at one time I had an actual film print which had the Universal logo. I can't really recommend this DVD unless you don't have a copy of this serial at all. I wouldn't buy another disc from Whirlwind Media, the releasers of the disc, unless it was an extremely rare serial that probably would not be released any other way. Now if only Universal would get off its duff and start releasing their own serials instead of letting people with Public Domain prints do it, I might be a little bit more happy.

wacky editing mania
This tape is nuts. When it arriaved at my house I was very dissapointed to find that it was only 80minutes long. The other version said that all the twelve episodes fill about 200 minutes. So i was bummed that i only got volume one out of 3 or something. But It turns out that this tape is a compilation of the best moments throughout the serial. This procedure of turning 200 and something minutes into 80 minutes a fun and wacky ride. There are so many jambled up plot lines, people running into scenes then back out in a cut, and then peopleliving through speeding plane wrecks and car explosions (With no explination). Over all the tape is rockin and I highly recommend it. A Cheasy Good Time!

Creepy Bela
The Phantom Creeps was Bela Lugosi's last serial. Lugosi is Dr. Zorka another mad scientist looking to take over and control the world. He tries to achieve this World domination with a number of gadgets. He has built an 8-foot robot, a belt that makes him invisible, and a gas that suspends animation, which he delivers with mechanical spiders. Through the 12 episodes an Army intelligence officer and a newspaperwoman chase him.

The 12 episodes are:

1) The menacing Power
2) Death Stalks the Highway
3) Crashing Timbers
4) Invisible Terror
5) Thundering Rails
6) The Iron Monster
7) The Menacing Mist
8) Trapped in the Flames
9) Speeding Doom
10) Phantom Footprints
11) The Blast
12) To Destroy the World

I purchased this DVD because Bela Lugosi was in it. I was not disappointed - I have really enjoyed it. The quality is not bad. There are options to play each episode or play all 12 continuously.

Andrew Dice Clay: Over Here Now
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (05 September, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Andrew Dice Clay

Not that Good
I really liked The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, but this wasn't that good.

Consider just this one joke: Big fat wives are the best kind, and their husbands don't treat them right. If a man goes out to play golf when he could be doing his big fat wife, then his big fat wife should be doing every one of his friends. That was about the funniest thing he said.

It was Dice - but it wasn't. Don't get me wrong, it was as dirty and disgusting as ever, but politically correct jokes aren't funny.

Remeber how he used to be public enemy number one according to the National Organization for Women? It was as if he had lost a legal battle and had to start doing 100% politically correct acts if he ever wanted to perform again. He did in fact seem really tired and beaten down in both the performance and some footage before the performance.

He seemed to be saying that he could become politically correct and still be funny. I'm assuming that's what he meant when he explained that he is "over here now", and when he said that he was able to move over here because he is a professional.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen...
There was a time that the diceman was a cutting edge comedian. The Diceman was good for shock value, often stepping over the line, but within a realm of cleverness and entertainment. If THIS dvd is any indictation, then that time is over. A fair amount of the material was recycled from a long time ago. All of his material appeared to be laboriously dwelled upon. (His put-down of midgets for example absorbed a large part of the dvd). Worse, the Diceman appeared to be bitter, even angry, and he seemed to lose the capacity to have fun with his material. Once; a master at audience participation, the Diceman has degraded to losing all focus, and ruthlessly insulting his guests. A good example is when a woman gets into the spirit of things and takes off her top, and then the Diceman engages her in his usual smut-conversation and then gets angry that she is getting more attention than he is, so he ruthlessly tells her that this is his time, and yells at her... not funny... to anyone. Too, At first I thought the sound was off in this dvd. I thought that the Diceman's mic was so powerful that you couldn't hear the applause or laughter by the audience. Then later on, I realized there was very little laughter to be had, but there was an abundance of boos... If you enjoy the Diceman of old, then this dvd will only make you sad. If you have never seen the Diceman before, then this dvd will have you wonder why anyone would even produce and sell such a product. Save your time and money, and forget about this one. If you don't...and you end up buying it.... well, don't say that you weren't warned....OHHHHHHHHHH!

Dice Man is still the undisputed comedy king
(...). I've loved the Dicemans comedy over the years and yes, some of his jokes are repeats. But his style and bravado is equal to none. I laughed throughout this entire show. His only better performance was the Day the Laughter Died. That was hilarious, but is only available on audio. I liked this even better than Madison Square garden. He's very focal with the crowd which is what i liked best.

Concrete Blonde: Still in Hollywood - The Videos
Released in DVD by Emi Distribution (27 August, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)

What a bummer
I've been waiting for years for the DVD version of the concrete blonde songs and when I saw it, I went right on and bought it. My complaint: this is the worst transfer DVD I'vd ever viewed - my VHS version is quite a bit more sharper. On the bright side, i was happy to see the "Someday" video (not on the VHS copy). I guess I'll resolve this by creating my on DVD off the VHS copy I have. Now go read my review on their latest album.....

No Effort
Take a bunch of video clips out of storage, toss on a simple DVD menu, and that's what you get with this. Don't expect anything more, because there isn't anything. This DVD is nothing beyond EMI (who doesn't have a current contract with Concrete Blonde) trying to profit by rereleasing old material while the blonde is back on the scene.

Great stuff!
I have loads of live Concrete Blonde videos, and it is so
nice to have some on DVD! The behind the scenes footage was not really behind the scenes, as touted. It's included on other videos as just them talking and stuff. Behind the scenes for me is making of the videos and such. Still, great stuff, so happy to have it.

Damned: Final Damnation

MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Average review score:

I'd give it a lower rating........ but I love the Damned!
I agree with the other reviews in that this had so much potental... and it was squandered by letting outside influences deside what the fans want (or need). Speaking for all Damned fans out there, it is simple..... WE JUST WANT TO SEE THE ... SHOW!! No narrative was needed (especially from the [person] they used). Noticed that he remained anonymous and not listed on the credits to avoid being hunted down by the fans. My recommendation is that you buy the audio CD of this performance and forget this ...

Totally Ruined!!! A Damn Shame!! Find the VHS ! Version!!
Two of my friends bought the vhs in '88. So I know this very well. It's such a great concert, funny interviews-totally Damned. W/ the dvd, however, they added recently shot narration. You see a guy, edited in, actually reading before and during every song!!!! I CANNOT begin to tell you how ANNOYING THIS IS!!! As if the viewer is such an idiot and can't catch all the quick, jibes and moves The Damned do on stage. ie) when Dave winks at a girl during New Rose. I caught that 15 years ago!! He mentions this as the first Damned DVD- cheesy!!!! But I guess Sanctuary or whoever thought they better explain the concert to us!! Idiots! The consistency is ruined!! Also, the guys' voice is very annoying. I ended up trading it for one of the above mentioned friend's VHS version. I tell you, hunt this VHS down it will save you complete frustration!! In addition, the added features are not worth buying this for either. The Bryan James interview is good, but not THAT good.
Truly a tragedy!!! I can only hope for a career retro DVD- may never happen!!

Anything Damned is WONDERFUL
I love anything DAMNED and I don't believe they have ever put out a substandard product. A must get for any TRUE Damned Fan. Wonderful footage of the most talented band on earth!
