Advice From A Caterpillar
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (26 February, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Don Scardino
Average review score:

OK in an eclectic kind of way.
First of all, I'll rate it for you: "R". They use the "f" word a lot. There's also about 30 seconds of partial frontal nudity ... which gets a PG-13 rating now-a-days ... during a love scene (though, they're not it love). For some reason, Blockbuster has this listed as "Youth Restricted Product". I guess that's their new term for "R". I dunno. It could be that they have phobias regarding adult conversation.

The plot is OK. Each character has a weird nickname that distracts a little from what's going on. The writing is eclectic. The final scene seems to be written by another person altogether ... perhaps the screen writer was bi-polar ... but that just makes it fun, doesn't it?

Anyway, this is a story about a woman who is afraid to make a commitment to a real relationship because it'll make her feel. But guess what happens....

Good movie
Being a big Miranda Hobbes (Sex and the City) fan, I first rented this movie only because Cynthia Nixon is in it. I loved it so much that I had to buy it. It starts off a little zany, but once you get into it you don't want it to end. It is definitely worth checking out and it has a lot of good quotes in it.

Romantic
I liked this movie; sweetly romantic with a bit of a twist: two artist friends (straight woman, gay man) are trying to be sophisticated and avoid any hint of having real feelings in any of their relationships. But whoops! They really do want feelings and one of them ends up with them, despite trying to deny it. Personally, I think there's a hint that both of them end up with them, but the story stops before that can be developed unfortunately. The biggest problem is that this dvd is the worst dvd I've ever rented: no menus and it's got a &*^%&^%$^&*%^&%!!! intro with ads for other movies that you can't skip. Fortunately my DVD player would let me fast forward over it, but if this weren't such a good movie, I wouldn't buy it.

Andre Rieu - Dreaming
Released in DVD by Red Distribution, In (05 November, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Andre Rieu
Average review score:

Excruciatingly boring
I have been an Andre Rieu fan but not after Dreaming. It is nothing but a collection of out takes which should have been included on his other CDs.

One reason I have been a Rieu fan is that his DVDs feature lively concerts. The Dreaming DVD not only does not contain a live concert, the music is dull, poorly arranged and poorly played. And there is just too damn much of Rieu and too little of the orchestra.

"La vie est belle" is one of Rieu's better DVDs. It was a concert in Berlin. The biggest gripe I have with Rieu's DVDs is that they contain only a part of the concerts, concerts which go on for two hours but less than an hour is on the DVD. Not in Dreaming. There are no concerts, only two 42 minute segments and no interesting extra features. The first segment contains some of the later music in the "La vie est belle" concert. Viewers of that DVD will remember that Rieu mentions that it might rain. Well it did rain and portions are shown in Dreaming.

After watching this DVD I was so disgusted that I threw the DVD in the waste basket. Then I thought again. I pulled it out because I mmight give it to someone else. But then that would be such a dirty trick to do to anyone so I again threw it in the trash.

Maravilloso
Cada trabajo musical de André Rieu es simplemente maravilloso.

DVD version for "Musik zum Traumen"
I received this DVD with much surprise:this is actually the DVD version for Andre's last CD "Musik zum Traurmen" (also known as Aimer/Dromen/Dreaming) released in 2001, not for the new US version "Dreaming" CD though they share the same cover (only four tracks are the same). It seems that Andre does confuse his fans and Amazon's editor misled their customers. However, I love this DVD just the same because this is a great performance with very beautiful music and Andre presents each piece by himself. I won't regret to have it even I already have the video. Any Andre's fan should buy this.

Morgan's Ferry
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (27 November, 2001)
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Director: Sam Pillsbury
Average review score:

I spent how much on this? Damn.
If you want to admire Henry Rollins' bare behind, watch this movie. Everything else is a waste of time. "Morgan's Ferry" is painfully slow and dry, leaving its otherwise talented cast deficient of an engaging plot, believable character relationships or interesting dialogue. The dragging story makes the viewer wish for an explosion, or anything, to make it stop, instead of lumping along into the uneventful end.
Also, it is pointless to watch the DVD version, there are virtually no special features; there aren't even chapters, just one long run.

Jail Break
This was a surprisingly interesting film set in the 60's about 3 escapees, one of whom is dangerous (Rollins), one of whom is lovable (Zane) and the other who is annoying (guy from "Roseanne").

It's one of those gems that was overlooked by critics, but can easily be enjoyed by romance and drama fans.

Loved it!

A touching story
"Morgan's Ferry" - a touching story well told and well filmed. I enjoyed the film thoroughly and am going to buy the DVD. If you liked Fried Green Tomatoes and films about the American South, you will love "Morgan's Ferry". Kelly McGillis and Billy Zane have given good performances. When I've purchased the DVD, it's going to be in my collection of my all-time favorite movies.

The Mysterious Mr. Wong
Released in DVD by Gotham Distribution (22 October, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: William Nigh
Average review score:

Bela Lugosi is the wrong Mr. Wong
I halfway enjoyed the series of Mr. Wong Chinese detective films made starring Boris Karloff, so when I stumbled on this film, boy, was I surprised. Especially since this 1935 film, which is only an hour-long, is directed by William Nigh, the same director as Karloff's Mr. Wong films. Go figure. Anyhow, the story is certainly interesting as the title character is a mysterious figure who stops at nothing to obtain the twelve coins of Confucius, which have all managed to end up in New York City's Chinatown. But I just cannot get past the idea of Bela Lugosi playing a Chinese villain replete with Hungarian accent. Still, the man does know what to do with instruments of torture. Certainly worth a look and if it inspires you to check out the "other" Mr. Wong, so much the better.

The OTHER Mr. Wong
The last film I ever expected to be re-released on DVD, yet it's enjoyable. For those of us who have seen Bela Lugosi as a bad guy (in most of his films) and a good guy (in a few others) here's your chance to see him in a dual role. One, an obsessed mandarin trying to acquire coins which will give him power. The other, a knowledgable collector who hopes for his (the bad guy's downfall). Not a 5 star film but good. I also recommend the Boris Karloff Mr. Wong set.

One of the Best of the "Bad" films.
This is one of the best of the cheap "Chinatown" mysteries. A real classic. The more you watch it, the more it grows on you.
DVD picture quality is pretty good, the sound is OK, but what can your expect from Monogram pictures. Buy it!

Red Hot Chili Peppers - What Hits?
Released in DVD by Emi Distribution (01 October, 2002)
MPAA Rating:
Average review score:

Not as good as the cd
If you must buy a Red Hot Chili peppers DVD, I recommend their "off the Map" This is a collection of video, its not live (that's not a complaint though). I own the "what hits" cd and I think there is a lot of good songs on their that are not on this dvd. Probably they didn't make the videos for all the songs, which is understandable. The songs are not their better work, and you will find yourself snoring to this, or annoyed. I don't even know the name of the first song at the moment, its either under the sun, or return to the sea, or something like that, if you know the song Im referring to, then this is basically what a lot of the songs on here sound like, not a lot of the peppers aggression here. Best video is higher ground

Great if you're a fan.
This is a pretty cool DVD, but doesn't contain enough videos or live footage. If you're a fan, go ahead and buy it, but otherwise, just check out all ten of these videos at redhotchilipeppers.com, as repeated viewings won't be necessary for you, anyway. The live performances are pretty cool too, even though "Stone Cold Bush" is taken from more than one performance. The best video on here is "Fight Like A Brave." It's pretty cool and stylish. "Taste The Pain" and "True Men Don't Kill Coyotes" are also pretty cool, but the rest are pretty boring or cheesy.

What Hits videos Rocks
Hey! I totlay love these videos! they are really amazing! Just look att Fight like a brave, that's the best video ever! all the songs kicks! i love this so much that I can't belive that I could live without it for 13 years!

Suck It and See
Released in DVD by Ryko Distribution - Video (26 October, 1999)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Starring: Suck It & See
Average review score:

Good ambiance for a classy party?
I heard about this project long ago and was happy to see it emerge. It is basicly a series of soft porn story/videos set to some great music. The actors and actresses are atractive for the most part and it is done tastfully for its genre. Something that would entertain ppl at the end of a good party. But it is what it is, and doesnt have the content to deserve more stars.

Witchouse 3: Demon Fire
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (22 January, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: J.R. Bookwalter
Average review score:

Better than part 1 & 2, but not enough.
I bought the movie because of the enticing story synopsis but was left flat due to the cheap look of the movie. Wasn't horrible, but wasn't professional looking either. Not a waste of time though, I would recommend checking it out, just don't expect a mainstream film.

from Fringe Video Fanzine Issue #005
A well shot, character driven film with a good story and great cast from J.R. Bookwalter, the director of the underground zombie classic The Dead Next Door (1988). A true fan of independent cinema who waved any fee to co-write, produce, direct and edit this movie, only to reinvested the money into this DVD. Annie [played by Tanya Dempsey / Hell Asylum (2002); Shrieker (1997)] fleeing an abusive relationship decides to stay with a couple of old friends Stevie [played by Debbie Rochon / Bog People (2002); Dry Rot (2002)], and Rose [played by Tina Krause / Titanic 2000 (1999); Vampire Seduction (1998)], who happen to be in the middle of shooting a documentary about real life witches and covens. After discussing the film, the three girls under the influence of alcohol decide to take part in a fake ritual. Probably not a good thing to do as they accidentally awake the spirit of Lilith [Brinke Stevens / Sideshow (2000); Slumber Party Massacre (1982)] A witch with a bad attitude, and great make-up. She begins to haunt the three girls turning them against each other, or perhaps its the abusive boyfriend "...just seeking his own personal revenge...?" This mostly female driven piece has a great twist at the end as victims and opressors switch roles. The occasional nudity shots pad out the dialogue, however are not exploitive. This special edition disc is filled with extras such as behind the scenes home movies, three commentary tracks, an interview with the very intelligent and down to earth Debbie Rochon, bloopers & outtakes, and a early J.R. Bookwalter home movie from 1979.

Wow, I was surprised!
The original Witchouse was good Full Moon fun...I didn't care for Witchouse 2...and after reading about Witchouse 3: Demon Fire, I wasn't too sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised.

This film, shot for a surprisingly paltry $26,000 is a great little horror flick.

Debbie Rochon, Tanya Dempsey, and Tina Krause play three friends who are being haunted by an unseen figure after doing a mock witchcraft ritual for a documentary. There's quite the little mystery that ensues and some very eerie and interesting things happen to them. Turns out it's that sassy Lilith, the wacky witch from the first two movies, back with a vengeance. The movie does throw a lot of surprises at you...you never really are sure what's going to happen next. The story holds together cohesively, the acting is superb (it really feels like the three leads have been best buds for years, and they are all very fleshed out characters with their own personalities), and everything snaps along at a very nice pace.

I highly recommend this movie to anyone who like witch movies (this is MUCH better than "The Craft"), or just horror in general. The gore is kind of light in this one, but everything else in the movie more than makes up for that.

The DVD offers a few nice extras too (including widescreen and Dolby 5.1 surround sound)...it's a very good deal! Enjoy!

André Rieu: La Vie Est Belle
Released in DVD by Red Distribution, In (28 January, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Andre Rieu
Average review score:

La Vie Est Belle
Bought this recently. Thought I was buying full concert but it contains only selections from concert. It's only 59 minutes long and the selection of music is awful. CD version has a much better selection of music.

What you get is splendid but too much is missing.
This concert is in Berlin and Andre Rieu speaks in German which then is shown in English sub-titles. This annoying because the viewer does not catch the humor of Rieu's remarks which often depends on the pitch of his voice.

The concert is great but typically of Rieu the viewer only gets part of the concert and for this reason I did not rate the DVD as highly as I might have other wise. If the viewer wants to see how the rest of the concert went, the viewer will have to purchase "Dreaming", which I do not recommend because it is an incredibly boring DVD. But that DVD contains segments of the remainder of the Berlin concert. Viewers of "La vie est belle" will note that Rieu tells the audience that it looks like rain. However, why Rieu made that remark is never apparent. It is in "Dreaming" where segments of the latter part of the concert are shown and it is pouring rain and even the members of the orchestra have to put on coats. What the viewer also sees is that all the good music was played in this DVD where in "Dreaming" the music that was played later was not only boring, poorly arranged, and poorly played so maybe it is a good thing that the remainder of the concert was omitted in the DVD.

Nevertheless, it one of my favorites.

La Vie Est Belle indeed!
A most beautiful program containing a marvelous selection of orchestral pieces, both classical and popular; reminds one of Boston Pops. The musicians are outstanding and produce a large, warm sound full of vigor and depth - and their costumes are marvelous too.

To say that Maestro Rieu is passionate about his music is an understatement. You can see, hear and feel his emotion over every piece. Pure love and respect, for the music and his audience. He is also charming and graceful on stage. He surely is a talented and inspiring conductor and musician. A rare breed indeed.

The production quality is first rate, visually and as a listening experience. Even Nature becomes part of the show with a sudden, unexpected lightening flash, as if to express Her approval.

La Vie Est Belle achieves what art is meant to do - enrich our lives. I have watched this video countless times and always leave the experience feeling joyful...and grateful, too. Bravo Maestro Rieu!

Atom Age Vampire
Released in DVD by Gotham Distribution (24 September, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Anton Giulio Majano
Average review score:

Alpha's Atom Age Vampire
The Alpha Video Copy of Atom Age Vampire is a short version and runs 68.8 min on my DVD player (running time on cover lists 87 min), so the storyline is sometimes a little bit confusing due to some cuts. Picture quality is not very crisp, the audiotrack has a sort of overlay, a tone in the background, not very loud but permanent. For me it's okay for 8 bucks, it's fun to watch, but don't expect a quality better than a rather bad video tape.

CHEESY CAMP HORROR WITH GREAT ITALIAN SCORE
If your idea of a good time is watching badly dubbed actors run around and scream "Pierre!" and "Jeanette!!" in nighties and trenchcoats, or ogling the mad scientist's assistant who looks like a lesbian Betty Paige in cat-eye glasses, or reveling in dialogue like "I know this project means the world to you, Professor!", then "Atom Age Vampire" may be your cup of tea. The Grade Z Franco-Italian import does contain a lovely score by Armando Travioli that was, unfortunately, never released. Also has a wonderful title sequence where a bat turns into a "V".

You say half BAD, I say half GOOD
For the record, this flick has a little of the visual flavor of a Twilight Zone episode, Way Out, or even Alfred Hitchcock Presents, if that turns you on. The sets are spare, and the photography intermittently "choice" & rather pedestrian black & white. All in all, it is about as atmospheric as the budget allowed. (It may help put you in the proper mood to imagine yourself making a horror feature in a few days, on sets you can only use at night, after the real owners have gone home. Under such circumstances, the fact that the makers had any kind of product at all to show is amazing.) Work with it.
