Ballin' Outta Control
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (19 March, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
From New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and North Carolina, this follow-up to Ball Above All takes it to the streets to bring home more hard-core footage of rim-grabbing dunks and legerdemain ball-handling and passing. Fast-forward through brief segments hosted by rapper DJ Whoo Kid about "Hoop Honeys," Kobe Bryant, and various product placements to get to the main event: awesome clips from playground contests, invitational tournaments, and prep games. As with Ball Above All, this approximately 45-minute video pulsates to an authentic rap and hip-hop soundtrack (obscenities edited), and there is gratuitous, albeit fleeting, T&A (no nudity). What it lacks in slick packaging and marquee superstars, Ballin' Outta Control more than makes up for in street cred, with footage of local heroes such as Sebastian Telfair and LeBron James, who astound with their Matrix-like moves on the court. --Donald Liebenson

Peace Hotel

An interesting idea falls flat...
It is doubly sad that "Peace Hotel" fails not only because there was so much talent on board (Chow Yun-Fat starring AND working the story, with John Woo executive producing) but also because this was Chow's swansong to Hong Kong filmmaking. It could have been great. Or could it have? I honestly don't think this otherwise interesting idea (A Hong Kong western) could have worked, at least with this cast and writers. It's a shame that the filmmakers tried to make a straight-faced Western, because the Hong Kong filmmaking style just doesn't fit it. For one thing, I believe the female lead was rather uncompelling and unconvincing. I honestly couldn't believe that Chow would eventually fall for (almost like a fairy tale) for a two-timing, obnoxious woman like her. Also, the melodrama and quirky Asian humor that worked so well in films like "Mr. Vampire" and most of Woo's and Chow's collaborations is a grating clash. It just doesn't work as a western. Also, I found the film rather boring, despite its rather compact running time (only 84 minutes). Even though the film was not crafted as a nonstop HK action blowout per se, it could have used some more action between the lulls (which are far too plentiful). The main complaint I have with the film is that it throws all credibility to the winds far too often (like when Chow falls for this mysterious woman). Also, the melodrama seems forced and hokey. On the upside, though, the film does gain its two stars due to Chow's usually excellent performance (he is one of HK's most versatile actors, and will sadly be missed), and the above average cinematography (especially the admittedly great climactic battle). But the whole movie just doesn't gel the way it should. I was quite disappointed with "Peace Hotel."

PEACE HOTEL
THIS MOVIE IS DIFFERENT THAN ANY OF CHOW'S MOVIES, IT'S A PERIOD PIECE, AND ONCE YOU GET IN TO IT YOU WILL LIKE IT. IT HAS A FUNNY ROMANCE STORY THAT'S VERY UNUSUAL AND THE FEMALE LEAD WAS GREAT FOR CHOW'S CHARACTER! THE ENDING IS SOMETHING YOU REALLY CAN JUDGE FOR YOURSELF, HOWEVER YOU WANT TO INTEREPT IT!!

See it for the action, buy it for the acting.
I bought this movie without seeing it before hand (which is how I see a lot of Hong Kong movies), and thought it just another Chow Yun-Fat vehicle, which was, to be honest with you, fine by me. I thought it would just plain be interesting to see CYF in a western. Well listen, in this movie, it's the acting that shines, not so much the gunplay. Sure, we lead junkies get our fix with a gunfight (and an even cooler sword fight), but the story here is deep. Much deeper than I expected. For one thing, subtlety is at play here, and that's a new thing for me while watching Hong Kong movies. I mean, I suppose it was there before, in other movies, and maybe I didn't pick up on it (d'oh! I think this sentence is turning into an oxymoron...), but here they don't slap you in the face with plot points, and they leave you to your own devices to try to figure out what a character is thinking and feeling. Some people may not care for that, but it always impresses me when a film doesn't insult it's audience's intelligence and perceptiveness.

Peace Hotel is a visually impressive movie as well. The film appears to have been washed, giving everything a dusty brown tint to it, which lends itself to great atmosphere in a western. There are subtle little tricks that may or may not have been intended by the director, such as...well, I'm not going to ruin it for you. It's quite an interesting film, and anyone who wants to see Chow Yun-Fat's acting chops should give it a try.

A Waste of Time...and Money
What a disappointment. I expected a silly, low-budget corny flick, but this was stupid and could have been produced, directed and filmed by my 16-year-old son with my Sony minicam. It has no substance, no humor, the cartoon monster looks like the early renditions of Mickey Mouse (1930's)...and the sound is pitiful. The only reason I gave it one star was for the brief sequence when Monique Gabrielle undresses in front of her bedroom mirror. Granted, many of these types of films are known for casting buxom young girls, but Monique is beautiful. What disturbed me most was that every young girl in the film is depicted as being a total airhead. The blood and gore effects you can buy at K-Mart this Halloween...and the makeup artist is clearly not an "artist". Maybe I'm being too harsh, but I expected much more. Buy this film only if you enjoy stupidity, T & A, a horrendous script...and a closing line from busty Monique..."...but all of my friends are dead." This movie dies during the first 10 minutes...and so will you and YOUR friends if you invest a single dime.

Really dumb, but if you like Madison.....
It probabally goes without saying, but this movie is a very cheap,
very bad "horror" movie with cheesey bits o' comedy. The only reason to watch it(or buy it) is because of former porn star Madison. She's very hot and does a sexy strip dance;you get to see
her big breasts on a couple diffrent occasions.Only die hard Madison fans would buy this video;fortunatly or unfortunatly,I'm one of them!

Wonderful, hilarious trash.
I had first accidentally stumbled upon this movie several years ago late one night on cable t.v. Within an instint, I fell in love with the atrocious acting, worse dialog, and sleazy nudity. EVIL TOONS is truly, as far as I'm concerned, a modern classic in cult/trash cinema. Thus, it seemed only appropriate to own this title on DVD.

The disc contains a nice looking widescreen picture, however, the sound is mono. The DVD has some interesting bonuses such as a trailer, a 10 minute "behind-the-scenes" commentary with the film's director, Fred Olen Ray, and a funny intro to the movie with the director, his wife, and naked women chained to the wall.

I recommend this DVD to anyone who enjoys nudity, schlock, and a good laugh.

Free Tibet
Released in DVD by Ryko Distribution - Video (29 August, 2000)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: Sarah Pirozek
Midway through Sarah Pirozek's concert documentary, Free Tibet, about the 1997 two-day benefit show in San Francisco, Smashing Pumpkin guitarist James Iha clearly summarizes the proceedings. "It's hard to expect real serious intentions with a rock concert with millions of kids." Indeed. Most of the thousands in attendance over the weekend didn't know squat, much less care, about the situation in Tibet. As long as they got to see Rage Against the Machine hammer home their political fury or A Tribe Called Quest kick out the jams, everything would be fine. This documentary, which mixes concert footage with backstage and crowd interviews, political lectures, and archival footage of Tibet's downtrodden history, successfully captures both the good intentions of the festival organizers and the ignorant audience reception, i.e., kids more interested in moshing and partying than world peace. As one kids puts it, "I care, ya know, but short attention span." The same unfortunately can be said of Pirozek's approach to all of this. She directs the film like she has ants in her pants, and then cuts it together with a blender. If you want the film to catch live moments by your favorite bands, you'll be disappointed. Pirozek rarely keeps the camera onstage long enough to enjoy the bands. Only Bjork's mesmerizing performance of "Hyper-Ballad" and Sonic Youth's "Bull in the Heather" are played in their entirety; otherwise, bands are interrupted by interviews, speeches, and random bits of Tibetan history. While it's admirable for the documentary to teach its audience along with entertaining with music, its approach is halfhearted on both accounts. --Dave McCoy

It's So Sad
There is the potential for an important message to get across, however people are too selfish to realize it. The worlds most peaceful religion is threatened by a communist regime and people can only think about seeing some cool bands. Free Tibet now, and worry about the music later. It is cool that these peopls showed their support but it overshadowed the true cause.

Monks, music, and more...
Now, when I got this it was because I love concert videos of all types, but it also shows some information about Tibet and the Tibetan cause. Although this makes sense I did not think that the Tibetan cause would be so interwoven into the video of the concert. It was not dull and definitely put a different perspective into what would be thought of as just a good concert. For example, interviews with the monks about the concert, and interviews with the fans about the Tibetan cause diversified the concert video. Overall, it was just okay, with definitely a varied group of artists. From Bjork to the Foo Fighters to John Lee Hooker to Beck and more you will hear a wide range of styles. Most of them only sing one song, except for Beck who does two, so if you really want to hear a lot of songs from one artist sorry, that is not how they did it. So if you like seeing concert videos, and/or you are a free Tibet person than I recommend it, otherwise it's not the greatest, just average.

sounds of science
If you want to listen to great music and expand your knowledge about the situation in Tibet, This video is for you. I was somewhat disappointed that there was one song per band, But its still worth the purchase. The extra Root down video is Great too.
I also would like to say what a great job they done on the Presentation and camera work.

Girls Gone Wild: College Girls Exposed Vol. 1 & 2
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (15 January, 2002)
MPAA Rating:
Average review score:

Mildly Entertaining
Maybe we've all become numb after seeing so many of these girls gone wild videos. It just doesn't have the same guilty pleasure flavor it had before. The voyeur element is still there which is cool. In my opinon America's Wildest Bachelor Parties and World's Wildest College Parties blows this one away.

Recommendable, mostly for Volume 1
I bought this DVD basically because it contains two volumes. That way, if one sucks, the other might be pretty good. The first volume is well worth it. It not only has the usual topless flashing, but one girl/girl scene where they're in a dormroom engaging in some nice foreplay and an extended shower scene which makes you feel like you're right there with her, since she looks into the camera and blows kisses and all that neat stuff. The second volume has pretty much what you can expect. I just wish the GGW series could exercise truth in advertising. It's labeled as Sexy Sorority Sweethearts, so I was hoping to see some sexy dormroom scenes with girls in sororities, including some sexy initiations they might be required to do. But other than those two scenes in Volume One that I mentioned, it's mostly Mardi Gras footage. And I'm sure not all the girls in this edition are from sororities. But altogehter it's a pretty cool DVD.

Life Changing
Let me start off by saying that I was skeptical at first. But after viewing this powerful video I am a believer. What a life changing theme. I highly recommend this video.
This video definitely deserves an Oscar and I rank it Number 2 on my best list... with number 1 having the TV OFF.

Like fun?!
On a whim, I picked up this DVD from directors Wye Martin (who?) and Barry Polterman (who?). I haven't gotten that lucky since scoring a prom date with the head cheerleader! (I didn't actually score a prom date with her, I use that as an example of "luckiness".) Anyways, the movie is a good, old fashioned romp of the horror kind! Like many of the classics, you have extreme moodiness balanced against brief scenes of gore. Plus, vampires that eat unborn babies! What more could you want?! If you're in the mood for fresh horror fun, check out "Aswang". And then watch the documentary and extras - those directors were nutty, man! You get the feeling making the movie was quick and cheap, and that the group involved made friends and enemies. Quite a soap opera behind the scenes of a horror shoot. Somebody should make that into a reality show. (Don't use that, Hollywood big-wigs! It's mine.) Oh, and stellar performance from Tina (the lead whose last name I can't remember). Perfect pitch for horror heroine. Recommend!

Treasonous, incredible!
Couldn't get enough! Finally unrated! Uncut! (except by the editor)! This one is a real buying opportunity - the extras was like a low-budget film school. Thanks!

I'm appalled!!
I'm absolutely appalled by this so called "art film". Give it five stars.

Tokyo Fist
Released in DVD by Ryko Distribution - Video (29 June, 1999)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director: Shinya Tsukamoto
Shinya Tsukamoto is most famous for his two Tetsuo films, nightmarish tales of flesh fusing with metal in a hallucinatory metamorphosis that would give David Cronenberg pause. For Tokyo Fist, he leaves the technological transmutations for a bloody bout with flesh, muscle, and self-mutilation, a domestic melodrama gone schizophrenic and emerging as a cyberpunk boxing picture: Raging Bull meets Eraserhead in an all-out sensual assault. Insurance salesman Tsuda (played by Tsukamoto himself) is a social zombie numbed by his deadening job and in a static relationship with live-in fiancée Hizuru (Kahori Fujii), but he is jerked out of his stupor when a former schoolmate turned pro boxer blows into his life. Kojima (the director's real-life brother Kohji Tsukamoto) bullies Tsuda and puts the moves on Hizuru, like a repetition of a decades-old cycle of aggression, but this time Tsuda turns to the boxing club to beat his body into a match for his once and future rival. Tsukamoto's vision of modern Tokyo is an alienated world of disconnected citizens repressing raw emotion under a social veneer of manners and passivity. Uncork the emotions, and faces are pummeled into bloody pulp, boxers broken in the ring, bodies ritually pierced and tattooed... and then it gets weird. The film runs down before the conclusion, but until then it's an unbelievably visceral ride. --Sean Axmaker
Average review score:

IT AIN'T ROCKY!
Remember Fight Club with Brad Pitt? This is the Japanese version. A little grittier, less witty, and arguably more viceral, it evidently seeks to show what people are like behind the polite facade of everyday life. A small time salesmans' sterile life is interupted by the reunion of an old high school aquaintance who's now a professional boxer. When the boxer puts the moves on the salesmans fiancee, the salesman does an Edward Norton and becomes a pugilist. No doubt the arthouse crowd might like this film, but for those who live in the real world, don't expect a movie on fighting; it's about frustration and loosing control when emotions run amok. While not unwatchable, it's not exactly something you run out and buy afterwards, even if you like really abstract movies.

Make sure you know who the creator is!
Thinking this was "just" a Japanese movie, I found Tokyo Fist anything but. Its raw unsubtle imagery -- not to mention over-the-top boxing "makeup", made me quite happy that I was watching this on an empty stomach. Yet, despite the human imagery of violence and spiraling downward, the sterility and facelessness of Tokyo itself is quite powerful -- more frightening, since it's the only part of the movie that doesn't seem impossible. The film is primarily shot in alienating, washed out blues, with red the primary visual for contrasting, jarring, color scenes. Sensibility and plot take a firm back seat to evocation and statement. It's kinetic, low-budget, and relentless, yet not at all preachy or pretentious.

It's not "Tetsuo", but good on its own merits
Truthfully, I'm not sure what the other reviews are complaining about: "Tokyo Fist" is arguably more coherent than "Tetsuo", although it's hardly a finely tuned plot. Nor are the goings-on more extreme than in "Tetsuo." The tattoos and piercings are not "ritual"; in fact, they're pretty direct self-mutilation and alteration. I really don't understand why this is slapped with "Warning: Adult Content" labels, because frankly, the American cinema has seen much worse.
The "Fight Club" paralells people draw are also very misleading; first of all, the plots are nothing alike. This is more similar to "Tetsuo" than anything else. Second, this is in terms of direction simply a better film. It's obvious Tsukamoto sat down and thought hard about how exactly he wanted each shot to be presented, whereas David Fincher tried to assault the senses by NOT thinking. It's not as digestible to American audiences, but them's the breaks.
Tsukamoto's distinct directorial style (there's even a little stop-motion here) is better defined here, especially his use of color. His "video game" style is very much present here, and while it's not for everyone, if you're interested in being challenged, it's probably for you. It's also a good lead-in to "Tetsuo", although the same warning there applies here: if you haven't sampled of David Cronenberg, David Lynch and a few other "perverse" filmmakers, I'd step carefully.

And 1 Mixtape, Vol. 6 (Street Basketball)
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (16 September, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)

AND 1 Vol 6
I rated this a 4 because it is "And 1" afterall. But i was not too impressed. Dont get me wrong there was some sick moves, and tight beats, but it was to short and alls they showed was ali and sauce. What im sayin is, u put everyone else in the video and it makes it 20-30 minutes longer. Make me wait another month, and put some more effort in it. but what the hell, It is "And 1" so you gotsta pick it up.

Going Back To The Good...But Going A Little Short
After the disappointment that was Volume 5, AND1, purveyors of the nasty, borderline-illegal, ankle-breaking streetball moves, went back to what they were best at: true streetball footage against people actually trying to defend against being put to shame.
Longtime streetball fanatics will love the new addition of an old favorite: Alimoe a.k.a. the Black Widow, a Harlem native with an already established rep at legendary Rucker Park (you can catch him in the Entertainer's Basketball Classic Season 1 DVD). Ali-baba is the consumnate streetballer: great handles and tricks, solid defense, a jumpshot and enough ups to make highlights--Hot Sauce, 50 and Skip all rolled into one. Jaws will drop for newer fans of the Mixtape series as Alimoe takes his smooth-but-tough NYC style around the country. Nearly a third of the DVD and the first 10 minutes are pure Black Widow.
Noticeably absent are finishers Main Event and 50, whose appear sparingly with Vol. 5 debutante High Octane throwing a majority of the sick oops down. Hot Sauce, Shane, Headache, AO and Sik Wit It put up most of the highlights, but the producers give a pretty big chunk of the video to local ballers holding their own.
Don't worry about hitting the rewind button to watch someone's ankle's break again; there is no shortage of instant replays, even up to five or six times per play. However, they get a little too creative with the video work sometimes, making some plays difficult to enjoy.
Now for the money...you wanna know about the tricks. There's a fair share of old familiars--the ball through the opponent's legs, the ball on the head, the big cross--but Vol. 6 does bring some new hash to the pipe. You'll see new spins on old tricks, and sick new variations to the good ol' spin move, courtesy of Alimoe.
Watch the video all the way through for the "Hidden Track" featuring grainy tournament to high school to college footage of NBA stars Shawn "The Matrix" Marion, Stephon "Starbury" Marbury" and Rafer "Skip To My Lou" Alston, as well as Alimoe. The "Sauce's Crosses" section is merely a short, short, short montage of maybe one or two broken ankles, and a ton of just big crossovers. The "Garage Battles" is a fair warning to AND1 wannabes to NOT, I repeat, NOT send in tapes of yourself when your skill level is AND None.
Way too short of a video...it seems as though too much emphasis was placed on interviewing players and fans, wasting five to 10 precious minutes that could've been streetball.
Those who decided not to buy the ESPN Streetball DVD and instead wait for this to come out may want to go back and buy that package. It'll be a nice complement to this DVD and has tons of stuff that never even shows up in Vol. 6.
A cool, old school return to the grainy, tournament footage-style of mixtapes that put AND1 on the map. If only they played it 10 minutes more.

This DVD was CRAZZZZY!!!!!!!!!!!!
I must say that this dvd was off da hook. I guess it could have been a tiny bit longer, but the dunks were tite, Sauces Crosses was cool, and the mess ups were hilarious!!!!!
