Peter Tosh - Captured Live
Released in DVD by Emi Distribution (01 October, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Peter Tosh
Average review score:

Worthwhile purchase for Tosh/Reggae fans
Peter Tosh's "Captured Live" show at the Roxy in L.A. is one of the best performances in reggae, hands up.
Even though this DVD only has a handful of the songs he performed that night (check out the "Complete Captured Live" on CD for the whole show), Tosh and reggae are missing a lot if they surpass this DVD.
Tosh delivered one of his best shows. This performance and his "One Love Peace Concert" one (which is also on CD) stand as his best moments on stage.
On "Captured Live," his rendering of "Rastafari Is" is incredible. The CD has the full, 11-plus minute version (hopefully, the DVD will also have the full version). Words simply cannot describe. But Tosh almost never sounds better than he does here. He speaks with great authority, sings with passion and bangs on the congo drums as if he'll never stop. On some of Tosh's other concerts on CD, unfortunately, he surprisingly lacks some fire. "Equal Rights/Downpresser Man" always manages to move me. You just don't hear his words, you feel them sink into your very being.
I know I sound like some fan gushing about the latest Britney Spears album. But know this, there was a time when a writer, a fan, would go at length in praise of a concert or album, he/she was speaking the honest, heartfelt truth. Nowadays, it seems everyone gives his favorite artist 5 stars for whatever they put out without discerning between good, bad, mediocre and poor.
Buy this and you will see that it truly lives up to a 4-star. There have been very few, if any, artists with the passion and devotion that Tosh had. Don't miss out.

Pig

from Fringe Video Fanzine Issue #005
A black & white arthouse film in the style of the transgressionalists. Directors such as Nick Zedd [King of Sex (1986); Manhattan Love Suicides (1985)], or Richard Kern [Evil Cameraman (1990); Submit to Me Now (1987)] come to mind here. Disturbing and dark the film depicts the relationship between a sadistic killer [played by Rozz Williams] and his submissive victim [James Hollan]. The two slowly evolve into a world of body mutilation, nipple piercing, and homo-erotic fantasy until they finally become one. The subliminal's are very strong, and the dadist type Alejandro Jodorowsky [Holy Mountain (1973) / Santa Sangre (1989)] symbolism confused me as much as I was entertained. Very poetic and surreal the film captures a dismal mood and places the viewer too deep into the mind of madness. This underground short film by Nico B. filmed in Death Valley was the last project of "artistic genius" Rozz Williams, who was formerly known from the "gothic" rock group Christian Death. "...He was one of the pioneering artists in the musical sub-genre known as Death Rock, and he used that as a springboard to strike out in a multitude of directions: electronic music, spoken word, visual arts, and hard rock. An amazing collage artist. His book 'The Art of Rozz Williams' can keep your mind exploring for hours. Included in this limited edition DVD is a 40 page reproduction of a book used in the film... 'Why God Permits Evil'. Very Cool... , and shows that the company really cares about this film being re-released. Some Christian Death footage would have padded the disc out nicely, yet only releasing 1,334 copies was a great touch that TRUE fans will appreciate. Rozz called the film PIG (1998) "...a form of exorcism and transition of his personal demons..." Shortly after he took his own life by hanging.

Bruce Bruce
Now I have seen Bruce Bruce a ton of times on BET and I've heard him on radio being interviewed. He's a very funny guy. I saw this DVD earlier than the average public fan with my urbanworks hook up. It's pretty dope. He covers new ground and as always he's a classy guy on stage. I definetly dug it and I think you will too. It's a stomach holder fa sho.

Better than volume 1! 4/12 stars
I decided to check this out because I had seen the first "Starting Line Up",plus I love the Platinum Comedy Series.Cedric's performance on here is funnier than ever.I love his jokes about Snoop Dogg.I hate Snoop,so I was glad to hear someone make fun of him.The other comedians on here are funny also. The first comedian on here,Leon Rogers, makes fun of the music I like, but he is hilarious!I love his impression of DMX.The second comic,Nema Williams,is not funny at all.I am white,so I like white comics, but I hated the way he was telling all black jokes to get laughs. The third comedian on here,Rodney Perry, was funny, but he cussed WAY too much. The last comedian on here is Prescott. He was funny, but again, he cussed WAY too much. This is better than Volume 1,but not as good as "D.L. Hughley Live" or Dave Chappelle's "Killin Them Softly".

One for Jennifer O'Dell Fans
... When I saw that Jennifer O'Dell was not among the stars named on the cover, despite being pictured, I half expected this to be a token few seconds part like the one she did in Sometimes They Come Back For More.

Fortunately she is one of the main characters, with more screen time than Angie Everhart who does get a main billing. Although she, usually, wears more than her character in The Lost World she's still very sexy and provides possibly the only good reason to see the film.

In some ways, the plot could seem complicated but it plays as though it's very thin.

A biker steals drugs and money from his gang, killing several in the process. His girlfriend (O'Dell) runs off with a rich talent scout to escape his jealousy and abuse, accidentally taking the bag containing the stolen goods. To get back the drugs and kill her new boyfriend the biker kidnaps her epileptic sister (Everhart) and offers a trade. After a few chases and much violence the good guy wins and walks off in to the sunset with the girl.

An interesting piece of casting was Zach Galligan as the biker's sidekick. I can only recall him playing the good guy in Gremlins so it seemed strange to see him as a vicious thug.

I rated this 4 stars because it gives me what I wanted, a lot of Jennifer O'Dell, and will get partially rewatched a number of times. I couldn't really recommend it for anyone looking for quality in script or filming.

Seven More
Seven more episodes round up the latest DVD from the Johto League Champions TV season.

But when Brock, a beautiful nurse and Team Rocket get trapped in the maze beneath the castle, it can only mean trouble!
409 - Two Hits and a Miss - Ash comes across a young girl and her Hitmontop, who hopes to one day become shihan of her grandfather's dojo. However, her grandfather disappoves of her battling techniques. Can Ash help out?
410 - A Hot Water Battle - While the trainers spend the day at a hot spring, Totodile, Chikorita and Cyndaquil aren't getting along. But when Team Rocket tries to capture them, they'll need to forget their differences to escape!
411 - Hook, Line and Stinker - Misty faces off against a nasty water Pokemon trainer in a fishing contest!
412 - Beauty and the Breeder - Brock and Susie are reunited, but it seems like Susie has another man in her life! And does Brock have the courage to give Vulpix back?
413 - A Better Pill To Swallow - A sick Ash meets a medicine man who cures his stomach woes. Old Man Shuckle is his name, and Pokemon medicine is his game! But when Team Rocket steals a special Pokemon attraction potion and drinks it, in a twist similar to "Love Potion #9", they find Pokemon may be a bit TOO attracted to them!
414 - Power Play! - Team Rocket wreaks havoc on a small town and it's up to Ash to team up with Gary and is Umbreon to set things right.

Some great episodes here, though you can also get three of these episodes on the High Voltage collection VHS, but you will get a cleaner picture on DVD. "A Better Pill To Swallow" is one of the best episodes of the fourth season, and worth the purchasing price of the DVD.

Pokemon Johto League Champions Vol 4
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (26 August, 2003)
MPAA Rating: G (General Audience)

Seven More
Another entry into the Johto League Champions series of DVDs. This one features the following:

422 - The Apple Corps: Ash and company come across a woman trying to deal with a pack of Pichu stealing her apples!

423 - Houndoom's Special Delivery: Togepi is separated from Misty during a freak Teleport accident, but luckly a passing Houndoom takes care of the young Pokemon.

424 - The Tower Inferno!: Ash finally arrives at Ecrutek City, but finds it's Gym on fire!

425 - From Ghost to Ghost: Ash battles Morty for his fourth badge, but Morty's ghost Pokemon are almost unbeatable!

426 - Brewing Up Trouble: The kids attend an ancient tea ceremony, where Brock falls in love with four sisters and Team Rocket attempts to steal an Eevee.

427 - All That Glitters: A gang of Murkrow steals Ash's badges!

428 - The Light Fantastic: A mysterious light emerges over the desert.

These are some pretty interesting episodes and out of them, only one or two feel like fillers. The Apple Corps is a cute episodes, and Brock falling for four different sisters in the same episode in Brewing Up Trouble is hilarious. The two Gym episodes will more than satistfy hardcore battle fans.

Pokemon Johto League Champions Vol 5
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (28 October, 2003)
MPAA Rating: G (General Audience)
Average review score:

johto photo finish
vol 5 is probably the best of johto league episodes. It's got better storylines and more crunch in the battles. The reunion of friends gives vol 5 a more exciting punch to watch. The good thing is that it shows how hard a pokemon trainer has to work, especially for the gym badges.

Not ready for the nursing home
The editorial from the Back Cover sums up th basic plot for this well done movie. Although there are five eldery men in the nursing home, Bruno, played by Jorge Galvan is the main character. He is a sentimental sort who has a special place in his heart for Rosita. Rosita is an aged singer in the nursing home who sang with Bruno as he played the piano. Rosita dies and her death is the impetus for the story line to develop. It seems Rosita wanted her ashes delivered to Tijuana for a final resting place and Bruno wants to make her wish come true. He escapes on a stolen maintenance workers bike from the nursing home and the adventure begins. He goes looking for Margarita who is supposed to take the ashes. He hunts her down to her work which is a cabaret and more fun develops in the story. She dreams of Australia and following an old lover. The other gentlemen escape after seeing a most wanted image of Bruno on TV. They hook up with Bruno and then they really get involved with the wrong people. They are given new instrument cases which prove to have more than instruments inside. In the end all ends well and dreams are achieved and new ambitions realized. It is a good movie with a bit of the flavor of the American movies about old guys with Walter Mathau and Jack Lemmon. Incidently ,this movie was the vehicle for a Best Actor for Jorge Galvan(also featured in the "Fibra Optica" and "El Pais Donde Pasa Nada") and Leticia Huijara for Best Actress in the Mexican Oscar equivalent Ariel. Recommended for a light hearted look at aging and resisting societies barriers. The antics of these old guys will surely make you laugh and that alone is priceless.

Poster Children: Zero Stars - A DVD Tour Diary

Good for what it is...
If you want to get a feeling for a typical (does that exist?) life of an indie band on the road, this is a great one. For 70 minutes, the DVD alternates between a concert song (lots of angles, plenty of views of all the band members, and no annoying camera tricks or MTV-style frantic cutting - just a good "live vibe") and a "day in the life" home video-style footage of rest stops, trips to the mall, etc. in low-key, somewhat humorous style.

I've met this band in person (after a gig) and they are indeed the friendly, easygoing people you see in this DVD. Watching this, one wonders how a band is able to keep this up more than a year or two - the tedium! But clearly the joy of playing in front of an audience that's enjoying itself is the whole point. They know who they are and what they're about, and that's quite refreshing to see.
