Mandela: Son of Africa, Father of a Nation
Released in DVD by Ryko Distribution - Video (19 May, 1998)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Directors: Angus Gibson and Jo Menell
Starring: Nelson Mandela and Winnie Mandela
A vibrantly presented and emotionally charged portrait of the dynamic African leader, this needed tighter narration to close informational gaps. For instance, there is very little mention of F.W. de Klerk, although as the corecipient of the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize (along with Nelson Mandela), he most certainly figured greatly in the peaceful passing of the political baton. It may leave you with a few questions but otherwise captures Mandela's remarkable spirit. It follows him from his early days and tribal education through his work with the African National Congress to his election as Africa's first black president. Produced by Jonathan Demme, this wisely includes poetry of Africa, as much a part of Mandela's story as his own inner strength. Nominated for 1997 Academy Award for Best Documentary. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Mandela: Son of Africa, Father of a Nation
Watched with my teenager and found this to be a very nice review of Nelson Mandela's life. Starts with how he was raised and educated to be the assistant to a village chief through his election as President of South Africa. The initial focus on how he was raised and interviews with his sister and others who know him gave good insight into his character that made him such a fighter for justice and great leader.

Marshall Crenshaw: Live From the Stone Pony
Released in DVD by Emi Distribution (22 July, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Marshall Crenshaw
Average review score:

Sounds great, looks so so
Anyone who has heard "I Suffered for My art. . . " knows that Marshall's acoustic shows at the Stone Poney were great. This DVD certainly maintains the sound quality, in fact, you feel even more like you are there. The visual however leaves a lot to be desired. Often Marshall's face seems washed out or over exposed. I really enjoyed this DVD, and I think anyone who gives it a chance will, but don't expect amazing visuals.

Mayhem: Street Trucks

Needs more lifted trucks
most of the trucks in this dvd were droped the trucks that were lifted they didnt do that much with them. But alot of action. They difenitly need more girls. I'm a 4x4 truck person I don't see the point of ruining a truck by lowering it. They need to come out with a 4x4 truck dvd with alot off-roading, girls and shows.

Great way to relax
I like this DVD for relaxing or using as background while I work at my computer. The music is very soothing for background and if I should relax in a lounge chair, the visuals are so soothing that I go to sleep easily.

This is my first DVD from Medwyn Goodall and I do plan to purchase another as a gift to a our daughter-in-law who just gave birth to her second son yesterday.

Mischief Destroy
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (15 July, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)

Great Cars, Great Girls
Unlike Gumball 3000, this one is not just super cars on the highway. The Players Run is undoubtedly Playa. In addition to the "Rally" they make stops along the way and do events such as the the Bondurant racing school, indy car racing and some cool parties. The cars are super sweet, and the hot german chick Simone is in it from gumball 3000. The extra features are pretty good too. Pictures, stupid stuff, german police reports are just as good and entertaining as the main feature. I would recommend this DVD to all import and super car enthusiasts. i have watched it multiple times in the first day i got it.

The Mystery of Mr. Wong
Released in DVD by Gotham Distribution (18 March, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: William Nigh

Mr. Wong saves the Eye of the Daughter of the Moon
"The Mystery of Mr. Wong" is the second in the series featuring Boris Karloff as the Chinese detective. This time around gem collector Brandon Edwards (Morgan Wallace) has acquired the "Eye of the Daughter of the Moon," the largest star sapphire in the world. Unfortunately, the gem has been stolen from China. While exhibiting the gem during a party at his home, Edwards tells Mr. Wong he is worried and the next thing we know Edwards is shot during a game of charades. The gem disappears, taken by Drina (Lotus Long) the maid, who intends to return it to its sacred resting place in China. But then Drina is murdered as well. This 1939 film, directed by William Nigh and based on the stories of Hugh Wiley, is a pretty good murder mystery until a key clue pretty much gives it all away. Nice to see Karloff playing the good guy for once, even if once again he is buried under a lot of makeup.

Night of the Blood Beast
Released in DVD by Gotham Distribution (22 July, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Ed Nelson

Very Little Blood Here...
Roger Corman does it again! Night Of The Blood Beast is a gooey cheese classic! An astronaut returns to earth, only to crash and burn. Scientists find him dead, yet still warm and without rigor mortis. They take him back to a research station, where a strange beast appears and kills one of them. The dead astronaut "wakes up" and starts acting weird. He is somehow linked to the monster and tells everyone that it means no harm (even though it's already murdered one of 'em). The astronaut decides he needs an x-ray and everyone sees that his body is plum full of alien embryos! The good news is that we do get to see the blood beast itself quite a bit. The bad news is that it looks pretty stupid. The beast tries to tell everyone that it is only here to help us by killing us all and melding our minds with it's own. So, the scientists burn it up in a cave. Will more blood beasts attack in the future? We are left to ponder this deep question. Still, as B movies go, this is at the top of the heap! The musical score is the same as in "Attack Of The Giant Leeches" and "Beast From Haunted Cave". Corman was a good recycler! Best when viewed after 2 am...

Oklahoma Cyclone
Released in DVD by Gotham Distribution (19 November, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Bob Steele
Average review score:

Good Bob Steele western
The Alpha Video release looks like it was mastered from an old 16mm filmprint. Possible a dupe copy from another print. Don't let the slight amount of scratches or the graininess of the picture bother you (nor the slight loss of highs in the sound) as this is a terrific B western.

Operation Delta Force 4 - Deep Fault
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (21 May, 2002)
MPAA Rating: R (Restricted)
Director: Mark Roper
Starring: Mark Roper and Greg Collins (II)
Average review score:

Above average for DTV action
You have to remember that this film isn't competing with the latest John Woo or James Cameron big budget spectacular. It's competing with the loads of shoddy or indifferent direct-to-video movies that come out each year. Among this crowd, Operation Delta Force 4: Deep Fault stands far above them. There is one main reason for this: ENTHUSIASM. The director really seems to be enjoying himself. He keeps the pace up and puts together quite exciting action scenes with rather stylish and varied visuals (lots of low angles, slow mo, tracking shots, etc). And there are a LOT of action scenes in this movie. It runs 96 minutes or so and close to 60 minutes of it is action! One particular scene runs for close to 25 minutes, going from a chalet gunfight to a ski chase to a busy city street explosion and finally to a tank battle! As you might guess, the production values on this one seem a tad higher than most direct-to-video fare. Lots of location shooting, good lighting, and plenty of vehicles. It's not at the level of a big studio of course.

Cons are the uneven acting and the weak, illogical story. I consider the latter to be a bonus in this case, as it makes room for the extreme amount of well-executed action during the film. One final note: The action scenes here are not especially realistic and the tactics they use aren't made too obvious. Go see Proof of Life if you want a highly-convincing depiction of a military-style action. Operation Delta Force 5 actually shows the tactics better than 4, but the action scenes are less entertaining (different director).

Bottomline, if you like action and don't mind slightly lower-budget pictures, then you could do a lot worse than this film.

The DVD is full screen and Dolby 2.0. Picture is very clear and sharp. Colours are reasonably bright. Sound is very loud and active. Not bad at all for a budget disc.

Paul Carrack: In Concert
Released in DVD by Red Distribution, In (15 July, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Paul Carrack
Average review score:

A solid product
The sound quality is great. Paul's voice is smooth as silk. The video image is good but at times amateurish. The song selection is good. Not too up-tempo, which should satisfy those like me who enjoy having concert DVDs as background but not the centerpiece of their living room. It does not compare to a Diana Krall Live in Paris in meeting that requirement, however.
I like when concert DVDs offer subtitles to follow the words, but this DVD does not offer them. But this is definitely a worthwhile purchase.
