The Brainiac
Released in DVD by Gotham Distribution (30 July, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Abel Salazar
Average review score:

If you are into this genre, this is a MUST HAVE! (cheap too)
Well, it's cheap, cheesy, but a good laugh. I especially liked the
scene with the big bowl of brains -- the "good guy" slurps a spoonful. I assume that since this movie was made in Spain that they are real brains (calves brains?) and not Jello. Yuck.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR LAUGHS
There is nothing that has not gone wrong with this movie. Please do buy it, and from the opening credits to the most amazing ending there are lots of laughs. It's so badly written, acted, filmed and dubbed, that one finds it hard to belive it wasn't masterminded by at least someone who screwed it up intentionally. The transformation scenes and the final outcome (monster) must be the lousiest in the rich history of stinking bad cinema. A true masterpiece!!!

Bulldog Drummond Escapes
Released in DVD by Gotham Distribution (18 March, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Director: James P. Hogan

Dashing good fun
Yes, they are both B grade films with low production values, but both show the real strength of Hollywood, when even their second string efforts have something. I doubt if Hollywood could put out a film with such effortless ease now. Ray Milland plays a somewhat daffy Bulldog Drummond, while John Howard is lot sterner. Both films rattle along with dastardly and bearded villans. I liked them both.

Four Great Actors In One Package
BULLDOG DRUMMOND ESCAPES was one of four movies made in this series in 1937. It starred Ray Milland as Drummond and Reginald Denny as his pal Algy Longworth. The plot centered on an attempt to rescue a captive female (Heather Angel) from a band of international criminals. The film received some good reviews at the time for a "B" production.

BULLDOG DRUMMOND COMES BACK was also issued in 1937. John Howard had the role of Drummond and John Barrymore appeared as Colonel Neilson. Much of the focus was on Barrymore who wore many disguises while he was helping Drummond.

Cilantro Y Perejil

A tender little film
CILANTRO AND PARSLEY comes on quietly as one of the characters in the story is making a video about Couples. She happens to interview her sister and then her brother-in-law and we see a mariage fall apart on film. But just as "reality" is what videos of world events are supposed to be feeding us, quite the opposite occurs here. Through a series of attempts to adjust to the non-married world, seeking to overcome the loneliness that pairing can prevent, all the characters we see eventually find that being "coupled" is the only safe haven in a world that no longer makes sense. Sensitively directed and acted, this movie restores faith in partnerships that sadly seems out of vogue today. A feel good film.

a very well done comedy
its placed in mexico city, a young couple with a dougher start to have some problems and they decide to separate for a time, but love is always around.

Great fun!
Nigel Hawthorne's adapation of the classic Garrick-Colman play is a delight. Wonderful ensemble acting and period flair--including beautiful shots of eighteenth-century landscape that bring Pope's poem "On the Use of Riches" to mind. And there are wonderful touches such as the turnspit dog in the kitchen juxtaposed with Mrs. Heidelberg's lapdog--there's the century summed up for you!

IF YOU LIKE JANE AUSTIN...
you'll love this fun period movie!

Severely Hit-Or-Miss
The cover photo on this film prominently features Chris Rock and Tim Allen, two comics who went on to priminent stardom in the wake of this film. Are they typical of what you see in the film? Yes and no.

Yes, they're generally funny, with a strong bitter edge and a forthrightness that is refreshing in light of the tiresom self-censorship of most modern comedy. No, you mostly haven't heard of them.

Timm Allen and Chris Rock have both tamed their shows, moving into more social satire and less vulgarity. These early routines, as well as some rare footage of Bill Hicks, justify the cost of the film. However, many of the other performers haven't enjoyed their success. Stephanie Hodge, Monty Hoffman, and Thea Vidale have very limited acting credits, while Joey Gayno, Stephen Pearl, and Larry Scarano have no screen credits other than this one.

Some artistic decisions in this film are hard to understand. Why are only two women represented, when most of us have known a lot of raunchy women? Why are only two black people represented? And why did they end with Jackie "the Joke Man" Martling, whose routine consists of him laughing at his own jokes? Surely there was someone stronger they could end on.

The comics aren't equally funny. Otto Peterson and John Fox are downright feeble. But it's more funny than not, if you have the mindset for this kind of humor. Perhaps the highlight is the relentless pace and extreme mannerisms of Bill Hicks--fans of that artist should rush out and get this film right away just for his bit, as there is little enough film of his material to be found.

Obviously, this film isn't for everyone. But if you enjoy raucous humor or love any of the individual stars, this film is enjoyable, if hard to find. Find it if you can, you won't regret it.

Tool Time, the Born Suspect and the Joke Man
Fair warning: this movie, featuring twelve standup comedians (like duh, right?), was made in 1988. Quite a bit of the comedy covers the last days of the Reagan administration, Iran-Contra, further paranoia concerning AIDS, Bruce Springsteen, and other late-eighties concerns that would date this movie. So if you're not too familiar with the era, much of the stuff contained within might not be as entertaining to you. But it does showcase a few talents prior to their breakouts into superstardom, with Chris Rock and Tim Allen being the most recognizable of the bunch, as well as the tragically unrealized potential of Bill Hicks.

Out of the twelve standups that performed in this movie, there are four that I found the most notable.

- Chris Rock doing part of his "Born Suspect" act, just prior to joining 'Saturday Night Live'. His sexual fantasy about Aunt Jemima is one of his most twisted standup moments ever. His performance here is one of the first ever recorded, and displays the spark of genius that would become a bit less mean-spirited, and more focused socially and politically in later years with "Bring The Pain" and "Bigger and Blacker".

- Tim Allen and his "Men Are Pigs" riff, his most notable standup performance, telling all what it "truly" means to be a man, as well as manly. I found it to be the movie's best performance. This is the act that launched him to superstardom, and helped inspire the "Home Improvement" sitcom.

- The late Bill Hicks revealing which celebrity and/or politician is the true Anti-Christ. Although I didn't always find his act to be laugh-out-loud funny, he was fun to watch and listen to. His act was basically social critiques in the spirit of George Carlin, but less focused and quite a bit more mean spirited. And anyone who can beat out Carlin in the mean-spirited comedy department is someone to admire in my book. This film was my first exposure to Hicks, and since then I've taken a listen to his other works, all of which I found both profane and wonderful. I'm still surprised that I never knew about him before this, and somewhat saddened that he's no longer with us.

- Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling, firing off the filthiest jokes & riddles I've ever heard. Although he had a small share of infamy as the Howard Stern Radio Show's head writer at the time (a position he still holds today), this is one of his first performances to reach a big audience. I both love and hate watching him perform... it's like a train wreck. Not only does he throw the jokes at an almost incomprehensible speed, he has a hell of a time trying not to laugh while telling his sick little stories. In some cases he's barely able to get the punch line out before guffawing. To summarize, he's got too much show to do, and not enough time to do it. It's both riotously funny and depressingly pathetic at the same time.

'Late!

Def Comedy Jam, Vol. 1
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (29 May, 2001)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Def Comedy Jam and Martin Lawrence
Average review score:

The greatest stand up TV Show!
I decided to check this out because I had heard good things about it,and D.L. Hughley is one of my favorite comedians.(This is the exact same reason why I checked out the Original Kings Of Comedy.)I was satisfied. This DVD contains 3 episodes of HBO's groundbreaking comedy series,"Def Comedy Jam".They each contain 4 comedians. They are all hosted by Martin Lawrence. This is one of the reasons why I didn't give this 5 stars. The first two shows on here are very funny, and the third one is OK.Two comedians on the third show aren't funny. One of them was Laura Hayes, from the Queens of Comedy. The other one was one of Russell Simmons' favorites. His name was Gi George. My favorites on here are D.L. Hughley,Ricky Harris, and the very first comedian on here. His name was AJ Jamal. There is A LOT of cussin' and swearin'.Every comedian also tells at least one sex joke.So if you have young children,DO NOT let them come CLOSE to the ENTIRE SERIES.Otherwise, sit back and enjoy the greatest stand up TV show ever recorded.I'm signing off for now.In the mean time check out the rest of the series,I guarantee you will like it.

25 Year-old Comedy Fan
Well, I actually just got this in the mail the other day. I had forgotten that I ordered it. The version I received from Time Life has the "2 Raw 4 TV" extras, and they are definitely worth it. The first two shows are very funny and the third one is OK. Two of the comedians on the third show were not very funny. Each show has four (4) comedians, for twelve acts total. The "2 Raw" segment has about five or six comedians and they are very raunchy but still funny.

There is a whole lot of cussin' and swearin', so if you're faint of heart with regards to profanity, you're going to want to avoid this whole series. Definitely, this DVD is worth the money. I had several friends who used to tape every episode when it used to come on HBO. This saves us a lot of trouble. The picture quality is good considering it was ten years ago and the sound is great. If you like good African American comedy, pick up this DVD. I'm going to check out the rest of the series.

Not as good as volume 1
This is a good DVD,but not as good as volume one. This DVD contains 3 episodes of HBO's groundbreaking comedy series Def Comedy Jam.The first one is hosted by Martin Lawrence, the second by Chris Rock, and the third by Cedric The Entertainer. The first show is hilarious!Every comedian is funny.Chris Tucker starts off this show.He gives a very funny performance.Kevin Anthony is next. His whole routine is about sex,but he is SOOO funny.Alonzo "Hamburger" Jones is next.I like the way he says "Hamburger" instead of a cuss word.Last, but not least,is the one and only Bernie Mac.Like Kevin Anthony, his whole routine is about sex,but he is SOO funny. In the second show,Chris Rock gave a terrible performance. He sounded like he didn't want to be there. The second comedian in this show,Dominique,is terrible also. The only famous comedian in this show is Rudy Rush.He gives a funny performance.Cedric's performance in the third show is great.Him and Mike Bonner are the only funny comedians in the show.

Tucker, Mac slaughtered it!!! Rock was lacklustre
From the outset Martin Lawrence starts one of the funniest comedies to date. The wide range of comedians from the unknown Chris Tucker (not anymore) to the brilliances of Bernie Mac, Cedric make this a classic. I do not have one bad thing to say about this video other than Chris Rock provided a very wack show, like he did not want to be there at all.

A great buy!!!

The Devil's Messenger
Released in DVD by Gotham Distribution (15 April, 2003)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Lon Jr. Chaney
Average review score:

Two Outta Three Ain't Good
Lon Chaney jr. plays the devil in this 3 part horror anthology. He gives one of his female lost souls a chance to be his assistant on earth. Her name is "Satanya" and she delivers various key items to the main characters in each story. The first one involves a psycho photographer, who takes a picture of a strange girl before murdering her. Let's just say that she is not happy! She haunts the man in a unique way. In the second story (the weakest of the three), a girl is found underground, frozen in ice. An anthropologist falls in love with her and kills one of his colleagues for trying to study her. He then defrosts his "girlfriend" and a strange surprise awaits him. The final story is about a man who dreams of being on a dark street and entering a door. His psychologist convinces him to actually visit the place. When he does, he runs into a fortune teller who tells him that she will kill him by midnight. This is the best of the trilogy, and has a cool twist ending. All in all a fair production. Lon is wasted in my opinion. He defintely had better days...

Finally, Alpha Video improves quality
It is hard to resist the Alpha Video titles with their great cover art and low prices even after buying some of their early releases that were of such poor quality. However, the quality of their recent releases is improving dramatically. The Devil's Messenger fits into that category.

The Devil's Messenger is actually just 3 episodes of an unreleased TV series filmed in Sweden called "13 Demon Street." Curt Siodmak wrote and directed the series but was unable to find a US distributer. No company ever wants to see their celluloid go to waste, so 3 of the best episodes of the series were linked together using Lon Chaney as the Devil to form the Devil's Messenger.

A woman has committed suicide and meets up with the Devil (Chaney) at the gates of Hades. He offers her a deal if she will deliver 3 messages to the surface. This is how the three episodes are introduced. I won't spoil the stories. While this is no classic, it is nice to see Chaney and the transfer is quite good. Plus, you just can't beat the price and DVD cover art. I hope Alpha continues to release these obscure titles for genre fans.

Doro Pesch and Warlock: Live
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (24 September, 2002)
MPAA Rating: NR (Not Rated)
Starring: Doro Pesh and Warlock
Average review score:

Finally, I get to SEE Warlock!
I'd never seen a full non-bootleg Warlock show. So this was a great treat. It's pro-shot in a club-sized venue in Europe. Nice camera work, not too fast so you can actually see what is going on...unlike an MTV video. My only complaint is the packaging is sparse, no insert of any kind! Would have been nice to put a little booklet in with the DVD since there is no other video available for Warlock. Also, not really any extras included on the DVD. They might have thrown in a studio track or something. I think the company that did this release was really just trying to milk it. Anyhoo, a must-have for Warlock or Doro fans.

All Night, All Right!
Warlock was a hard rock band from Germany. The female vocalist Doro Pesch has a very good hard rock voice. She has done about 20 albums in her courier. This is a live concert filmed at the Camden Palace in London in September 1985. They had done just two albums: "Burning the Witches" and "Hellbound", so there was not so much material to choose. This DVD lasts 63:14 and it has also discography and biography about Doro. The Hellbound tour doesn't leave you cold if you like good hard rock. This is a club concert, so the audience is quite near the band.

1. The beginning/ 2. Out of Control - this is quite a fast track, so it is good track to start. There's good guitar solos during the song. True hard rock stuff! Doro, she's really caught in a mosh! The Real hard rock woman! 4.25/5

3. Earthshaker Rock - more stuff from "Hellbound" album. Very good lyrics, very good drums, very fast song, good vocals. This is defintely a great live track! 4.5/5

4. Metal Racer - a song from their first album "Burning the Witches", quite fast song, there's a real hard rock attitude! 4.5/5

5. Wrathchild - better live than studio, good track from "Hellbound" 4.5/5

6. Hellbound - very fast track, Doro sings very good, there's good guitars and good lyrics. 4.5/5

7. Holding Me - a sad track from "Burning the Witches" album, musically, maybe not so sad lyrically. There's also very good guitar solo. 4.5/5

8. Shout It Out - from "Hellbound", Doro puts her fist in the air and sings very good! This is not my favourite track, but better live than studio 3.5/5

9. Drum Solo/ Evil - quite good solo, "Evil" is a fast track with good lyrics but it's still basic stuff. This hasn't been released in any album. 3.5/5

10. Without You - a peaceful track from "Burning the Witches", very touching lyrics!! 5/5

11. Hateful Guy - from the "Burning the Witches", a great heavy track with good heavy lyrics! There's good camera angels. The band is together and shows its strengeth. 4.5/5

12. All Night - fists in the air again, this is a track from "Hellbound". Good bass guitars. This track isn't so good live as it is in studio album. 4/5

13. Burning the Witches - the title track of their first album, very heavy, my favourite from this live DVD. The audience is with them truly. They sing "Burning...burning...the witches...the witches" 5/5

14. Time to Die - a great track! Very fast one, a good guitar solo. The only bad thing is that there's a break when the picture is still (about 32 seconds). 4/5

The Erotic Mirror
Released in DVD by Ventura Distribution (26 March, 2002)
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Director: Pete Jacelone
Average review score:

from Fringe Video Fanzine Issue #005
When the movie started with two young lovers (Amy & Bill) on a vacation groping each other in hopes of hurrying home for a session of love making, I was happy to see that Seduction Cinema has finally gotten away from the tame soft-core lesbian formula and has produced something couples can watch together. Not the case... Before heading home Amy buys a strange mirror from an antique dealer, only to "...immediately be overcome by a deep inner desire to caress and explore her luscious body in ways she never thought possible..." Upon reaching her climax, a strange woman appears in the mirror, who Amy later finds out is a former whorehouse madame [played by: Darian Caine / Mistress Frankenstein (2000); Gladiator Eroticvs (2001)] trapped in the old mirror. Amy later figures out that the more friends that gather for girl on girl adventures in front of the mirror the stronger the image of the madame appears. Meanwhile poor Bill gets in on none of this action, and gets very drunk. I don't blame him... Ending in a orgy of lesbian ecstasy, the love making urges help the madame escape only to trap others inside the mirror in a Twilight Zone ending. Besides the well lit sets and the horror ending the film is nothing different than the other Seduction Cinema product. Soft-core naked groppings, with lovely lesbians. They are a company that make their actress feel comfortable, however I think its time for some originality, and new directions in product. The highlight of the disc is the short appearance of Mistress Rhiannon. She is nothing short of a freakshow, with extra, extra, extra large breasts, and Mick Jager lips to match. Her videos consist of Karate, Pantyhose, Smoking, Bug Crushing, and foot fetish. She is very weird and out of place in a movie like this.

Good Times!
The Erotic Mirror is one of the best Seduction Cinema movies so far. It's got a big cast, a good, original plot, and it's well-fleshed out (it's like 2 hours long!!).

Laurie Wallace plays Amy, a young woman who takes a vacation with her boyfriend Bill (Major Dodge) to her hometown to get away from "the city" for a while. While visiting a quaint antique shop, she finds a strange mirror and goads her man into buying it for her. Once she gets it home she discovers Darian Caine is trapped inside it and makes whoever looks into the mirror do "naughty" things. Being the inquisitive gal that she is, she takes it to her old friend (A.J. Khan) who just happens to be a doctor (see, cuz she wants the mirror examined). After discovering what happens when looking into the mirror, the doctor lady decides that since she's a "professional" she should keep the mirror for further examination (frankly, I think she needs to examine her nurse, played by the odd Mistress Rhiannon, who looks like a melted piece of plastic with HUGE...uh..."dirty pillows"). Amy nixes the doctor's "mirror exam,", and hauls the mirror back out to her car. Lots of other mysterious things happen in the movie, but to reveal them would be to spoil the fun. Misty Mundae, Jade DuBoir, and Ruby LaRocca are all featured in the film, and Debbie Rochon even makes a cameo appearance.

This movie is directed by Pete Jacelone, who also directed the wild and crazy Psycho Sisters, a much different film. Interestingly, viewers of both films may notice the the building used as the Sperm Bank in Psycho Sisters is the same one used in the Erotic Mirror as A.J. Khan's Immediate Care Clinic. Both films also feature an impatient guy with both hands wrapped up being annoying in the waiting room. Just a useless tidbit of information.

The DVD of THE EROTIC MIRROR features THREE sets of behind-the-scenes hijinks, a "Talent Rehearsal Session" which basically is just Laurie Wallace and Major Dodge with the director, rehearsing the scene where the couple finds the mirror. Also included are trailers of other Seduction Cinema films available on DVD.

**HIGHLY RECOMMENDED**
